Obviously not.

The policy was not against same-sex sex, but against being a homosexual and
actually being ATTRACTED to the other party during the proceedings.

If he had of asked "do you LIKE men", then that would have been a violation.

Just asking about the sex would not be.

if you want to go with something sexier, that is visible but has style, you
could instead go with some j-hooks meant as curtain or drape tie backs.

something sexy like these

or something simple like:

(I've hung panels on walls using these before)

Do you truly not see any qualitative difference between this and most of

wikileaks:

Re: Irony, hypocracy, or just plain funny? Lawyers for Julian Assange cry foul over leak of sex-case papers

2010-12-19 Thread Jerry Johnson

Actually, it has _nothing_ to do with the Freedom of Information Act.

FOIA was never meant for ALL work product or documents produced by the
government. Never.

It does not cover things like the Valerie Plame incident, nor the more
recent outing of the lead intel officer in Pakistan.

And doesn't affect corporations at all. Especially not details like the home
phone and address of corporate officers, nor the preschool and classroom
assignments for corporate worker's children.

Should corporate officers (possibly our society's second estate) be held to
a different standard than members of the fourth estate? I personally don't
think so.

Working for the government DOES carry with it different rules than working
for the private sector. But it does not remove all protections.

As others pointed out, the "it's different" defense is almost ALWAYS a key
statement made excusing hypocrisy.

It cannot be called terrorism because it was not an attack against a
civilian population with the intent of inciting terror above and beyond the
fear the incident itself caused.

It was an attack against a military target, with no loss of life, who's
purpose was to delay the acquisition of nuclear weapons (of mass
destruction)

It _was_ definitely cyber warfare. It was most likely a sneak attack. But it
certainly wasn't terrorism.

Re: Well, wikileaks finally lost me

2010-12-06 Thread Jerry Johnson

According to the top media houses, they told wikileaks not to publish those,
which they did anyway.

Don't care if no one has been injured yet. It was still a dickish move.

The release of the video, although controversial, is exactly the kinds of
things wikileaks SHOULD be spending their time on.

The list of vital targets is not.

They moved me from "cool" to "don't care" to "those guys are dicks".

It really is like they are 10 year olds with the teacher's diary.

List of facilities 'vital to US security' leaked

A long list of key facilities around the world that the US describes as
vital to its national security has been released by Wikileaks.

In February 2009 the State Department asked all US missions abroad to list
all installations whose loss could critically affect US national security.

The list includes pipelines, communication and transport hubs.

Several UK sites are listed, including cable locations, satellite sites and
BAE Systems plants.

BBC diplomatic correspondent Jonathan Marcus says this is probably the most
controversial document yet from the Wikileaks organisation.

Re: Please keep my wife in your thoughts/prayers/whatever....

2010-12-02 Thread Jerry Johnson

Scott, my hopes and prayers are with you.

Please take some comfort in knowing that you and she are blessed to be here
and now, with the best doctors and health care in the history of mankind.

It may not seem like it at times, but we as a species are better off in most
ways than ever before.

And if possible, take to heart the words of Jim Valvano, which I was
reminded of last night:

“To me, there are three things we all should do every day. We should do this
every day of our lives. Number one is laugh. You should laugh every day.
Number two is think. You should spend some time in thought. And number three
is, you should have your emotions moved to tears, could be happiness or joy.
But think about it. If you laugh, you think, and you cry, that's a full day.
That's a heck of a day. You do that seven days a week, you're going to have
something special.” - Jim Valvano

That is indeed a heck of a day.

has persisted over time."

Re: I just finished my 50,000th word of my "novel" this month

2010-12-01 Thread Jerry Johnson

I started on a Western/Historical Novel following the same path my
gfather followed to get to America in the 1860s.

But ran out of ideas and facts.

So I fell back on an old idea I had for a fantasy/swords and sorcery story,
centered around the founding of "The Adventurers Inn".

The basic idea being that there are Adventuring Parties (like
those immortalized in every book and story in the sci/fi-fantasy section of
the bookstore). And that people in those times and places would follow those
parties like we follow celebrity gossip and sports teams.

All centered around the Adventurers Inn, like a local sports bar.

(merchandise "the sword that X used to kill the dragon", trades between
parties, substitutions, farm system for new talent, team logos, etc)

Dumb idea, but fun to riff on, and lots of room for follow on short stories.

Sometime in Jan I will throw it up online. I will _not_ suggest anyone else
read it, partake at your own risk.

Writing is not easy for me. Writing to a deadline is near impossible.

Ah, yeah, didn't notice the "dust free" requirement.

If dust-free is the goal, then sealed containers are important, so
custom-made acrylic boxes are probably your best bet.

another group that is great for custom acrylic work is salt-water aquarium
shops. they often have the ability to custom craft acrylic boxes, and yours
should be cheaper since you dont need water-tight nor water-thick
construction.

do you want them behind glass?

I was thinking more of like a set of stacked shelved on a wall, slanted like
a shoe rack but up high, black felt lined (with that non-reflective felt).
with a small halo spot shining from the shelf above onto each hat. with each
hat MAYBE on a peg to rise it slightly off the actual shelf and float it.

Re: How to screw up an interview

2010-11-18 Thread Jerry Johnson

As a former interviewER, I can say that a not-perfect interview is not a
deal breaker.

I would truly get more nervous at a perfect interview. Either they had too
much practice in interviews (which may not be a good sign), they are great
people-people and had completely charmed me out of my objectivity, or they
really were perfect for the job.

I also know that often the person giving the interview is as nervous, and
may be sitting at home thinking "I lost total control of that interview: it
went on way too long. I hope he will still consider the job, and not judge
our project management and development by that interview!".

Hoping for you.

Again, here I don't see bias. I see sensationalism.

There is a big difference.

Do you truly believe the headline would have been different if it had been a

I could image them changing the headline if it was a major advertiser, or a
member of their board, or their boss' wife, but not because the person is a
Republican or Democrat.

Re: full body scanners at airports

This is all a simple matter of marketing.

Instead of an "intrusive patdown" in front of everyone, you get slipped a
little black "players" card, that lets you into the "champagne room" for a
lapdance and patdown from a hot dancer-type girl. (or guy - your
preference).

You walk away happy. College girls get jobs with great benefits, and the
economy is improved by the sharp uptick in airline travel.

Why is this so hard?

Re: Glenn Beck fantasizes about muslims beheading Obama for leaving Islam

2010-11-06 Thread Jerry Johnson

I would disagree.

I think most people are born into a religion (usually the religion of their
parents)

And are raised as part of that religion.

Only in later years are they likely to _leave_ a religion they were
bequeathed at birth, and reinforced during childhood.

What you are describing below is _faith_, not religion.

Or so I think.

Re: US Economy gained jobs last month

2010-11-05 Thread Jerry Johnson

Well, one of the fundamental tenets of the new political scene is "reducing
the size of government".

With this reduction, there are going to HAVE to be massive job loss in the
public sector.

If the money is cut and the jobs are cut, then obviously the JOBS ARE CUT!

And although the mantra is "smaller government means more money for
businesses, which means more jobs" is spouted often, I think we are going to
see there is little correlation between those thoughts.

So, I don't expect the private sector to instantly create the jobs to
replace those public sector jobs lost.

Not in anything like the near term.

Immigration hawk Pearce elected president of Arizona Senate

Sen. Russell Pearce will lead the Arizona Senate next year after colleagues
elected him to be president of the chamber during a closed-door meeting Nov.

Pearce defeated Sen. Steve Pierce and Senators-elect Steve Yarbrough and
John McComish. All four had been rounding up votes for months in
anticipation of the leadership elections. Until now, it wasn’t clear which
candidate had the edge, although many sources were saying Yarbrough appeared
to have the most support prior to the Nov. 2 elections.

Digital revenge on Craigslist is prosecutable

Revenge apparently has its limits.

Woman may be prosecuted for Craigslist
postingNovember

A defendant who allegedly entered another woman’s apartment, accessed her
computer and posted two ads containing her phone number on Craigslist’s
Casual Encounters section stating that the woman was willing to engage in
sex can be prosecuted for criminal harassment.

Quincy District Court Judge Mark S. Coven issued the ruling.

The first Craigslist posting informed the reader that the alleged victim was
looking to perform oral sex, while the second expanded the proposed sexual
conduct to include intercourse.

As a result of the ads, the alleged victim received approximately 70 phone
calls and five text messages between 9 p.m. and 6 a.m.

Re: Who got punished? Re: Punitive Politics

2010-11-03 Thread Jerry Johnson

I don;t see that at all.

What I saw was that _exceptionally huge_ money affected a lot of races. Not
normal money, not even big money, but ridiculous money.

Like tequila shots at the end of a night, money gave people like a 20% bump
they otherwise wouldn't have had.

In races that should not have been close at all, money made them close.
In races that should have tilted slightly to the incumbent (going be past
races), the races tilted instead to the money, by a couple of points.
In races that normally would have been close, money made it seem like a
runaway.

I also saw the actually emergence of some real, contested, 3 way races,
where instead of the normal "loon on the edge" independent, instead the
independents were MODERATES of either party who didn't want to swing to the
poles. We aren't used to seeing it, so people didn't trust it yet, but I
think the signs are starting to shift.

Re: Punitive Politics

Heck, if they really wanted to try, I bet any 5th grade class could help
them make smart cuts that are not hurtful.

The problem is "not in my backyard" (or not from my pocketbook).

Every politician has people that own them, and have money that they are
getting that they are not willing to give up. And they make deals with
others that have different needs, so no one touches either pie.

and unfortunately, there is no incentive in the way our gov works (from a
gov employee/department perspective) to ever lower a budget item. because
you lose that money forever more. they are only ever rewarded for always
growing their budgets.

Heck, I cannot believe there is money to be saved just in shipping costs for
medicare paperwork and mailorder prescriptions.
Or inflating the tires of all government vehicles and getting them a tuneup
to save gas.

Re: "Straight Ticket" Voting

2010-11-03 Thread Jerry Johnson

So, a straight party vote.

(You went by the labels, not by the people.)

For shame!

Re: Non-Political Picture Thread

Spectacular!

I cannot compete with that, but do love this view out my office window:
http://picasaweb.google.com/jmiloj/MyDailyCommute#5489730493939406450

(That
is the Old South Meetinghouse, where the rabble gathered in a meeting before
marching to the harbor and wetting some tea.)

The building past it on the left is the location (but not the building)
where Ben Franklin's family lived, and where he was born.

Apparently we cannot already!

No, not a fan in the past, but a "Congrats", and "Heck of a job, Brownie" to
the whole team.

Very nice! Love those goats.

Here is an interesting little corner of the world. Are you familiar with the
trend called "tiny houses"?
Here is one pretty cool one:

Re: What is a voter to do?

2010-11-01 Thread Jerry Johnson

That is funny. I just ran mine, and the LOWEST I got was a 55% (out of 5
candidates). The highest was 76%. And both the R and the D were withing 5
points of each other and me.

So, Jerry, just to be clear:

You maintain and believe that the guy who put his foot on the downed woman
was in the right, and used no more force than he needed to, and had the
right intentions in mind, and did ABSOLUTELY NOTHING WRONG?
