Re: Republican loser changes name to Cesar Chavez to run as Democrat

2014-06-03 Thread Larry C. Lyons

Conservatives you mean, as one study (of about 5 I've found so far) concluded:
...political conservatism may be a process consequence of low-effort
thought; when effortful, deliberate thought is disengaged, endorsement
of conservative ideology increases.

from:
Low-Effort Thought Promotes Political Conservatism
Scott Eidelman, Christian S. Crandall, Jeffrey A. Goodman and John C.
Blanchar Personality and Social Psychology Bulletin, June 2012 vol. 38
no. 6 808-820
http://psp.sagepub.com/content/38/6/808
Abstract

The authors test the hypothesis that low-effort thought promotes
political conservatism. In Study 1, alcohol intoxication was measured
among bar patrons; as blood alcohol level increased, so did political
conservatism (controlling for sex, education, and political
identification). In Study 2, participants under cognitive load
reported more conservative attitudes than their no-load counterparts.
In Study 3, time pressure increased participants’ endorsement of
conservative terms. In Study 4, participants considering political
terms in a cursory manner endorsed conservative terms more than those
asked to cogitate; an indicator of effortful thought (recognition
memory) partially mediated the relationship between processing effort
and conservatism. Together these data suggest that political
conservatism may be a process consequence of low-effort thought; when
effortful, deliberate thought is disengaged, endorsement of
conservative ideology increases.

Re: So this is why the GOP is backing off healthcare reform as a platform...

2014-06-01 Thread Larry C. Lyons

my bad I didn't read enough I did mention Shrubbery.

That said, think of it genius, what happens when

1) your guys are shot at more don't a few get hit?
2) with more people getting wounded don't you think that would result
in greater demands on the system Just a wild guess on my part however.
3) Facing IED's and similar forms of attack, that means more leg and
arm injuries. Also the pressure wave does a number on the brain - As
someone a bit familiar with neuroanatomy I think I can guess the
effect of a blast wave on the brain would not be good. Ergo increased
use.
4) Congress has widened coverage eligibility quite a lot in the last
10 years for VA care. Don't you think that would increase demand.
5) The VA has opened only ONE new hospital in the last 25 years.

So yes there has been a massive demand on the VA medical system much
due to George W. Bush's wars. And your republican party has blocked
increases in VA funding multiple times over the last 5 years. So if
anything the blame is on the Republicans.

AS much as I personally dislike Sam's ideology, his ideology simply
does not fit within the definitions of fascism as noted here:
http://www.rense.com/general37/char.htm

At his worse, its simply on the extreme end of the Republican
spectrum. When I was younger and in London I remember kicking a few
fascists to the curb. He's nothing like that. I could even have a beer
with Sam. Provided it was something decent that is.

The Oregon exchange is certainly an abject failure. It was a large
failure on the part of the vendor (Oracle) and on management that did
a crappy job of monitoring the vendor and auditing their work (the
Oregon Health Authority). Plenty of blame to go around with a doubt.

But how does one flawed implementation point to a problem with the
law? You say most failed. That is bullshit. Oregon's failed. And now
we are moving things along to piggy back on the national exchange.
This is not the first IT project that has ever failed, nor the
largest. We need to learn from it, without a doubt, but a failure of
the IT project does indicate that the law behind it is a failure. As
noted by others, plenty of exchanges have worked very well.

IT projects fail. Demand accountability (high level people have been
fired and Oracle is getting sued), learn from mistakes, recover the
best you can, and move forward.

You could also look at the Kentucky system which is very successful.

As for the Oregon exchange, blame Oracle. They over promised, and
under delivered.

FWIW however the GOP does appear to be backing away from their anti-ACA stance.

Re: So this is why the GOP is backing off healthcare reform as a platform...

2014-05-31 Thread Larry C. Lyons

AS for the VA scandal, its more of a problem of facilities and access.
Because of cuts and increased demands from 12 years of war (courtesy
of your hero G. W. Bush) and over promising they don't have the space
simply put. In the last 25 years the VA has built only one, that is
ONE, new care facility. Compare that to the number built by for profit
health care companies. If the VA had the same level of investment the
scheduling scandal never would have happened. That said, its a
systemic problem with the VA system, brought on by years of increasing
demands on the system and trying to make increasingly fewer resources
stretch to cover more and more. And still surveys show that the
majority of vets are very satisfied with their VA care. Now imagine
how well the VA could have done if the system had the right funding.
At times its seems that this country is all for getting its soldiers
wounded and messed up but isn't really concerned about afterwards.
After all what's a few vets in comparison to the shiny new hangar
queen F-35 LIghtning II that costs $142.6 million a piece.

O'Keefe didn't get stung. Josh Fox just didn't take the bait.

That doesn't constitute O'Keefe getting caught trying to do anything except
expose hypocrisy of those who are willing to prostitute themselves for
 personal gain at America's expense.

Begley's excuse that he's hard of hearing is laughable. Only an gullible
idiot would sit in on such an important meeting and nod in agreement at

Liberals just can't stand it that the right has someone bringing down their

BTW lately I've been getting into how ideologies tend to effect low

there according to this one journal article, ideology, and the
magnitude of those beliefs significantly affects what we pay attention

It's one thing to see it on TV, but when you can hear and feel the cars

pass, do it. You get up close to the cars and pit boxes. And if you can
score a hot pass, you get to go into the garage area and really see some
cool stuff. And of course there's the Richard Petty experience. Doing some
laps in an actual NASCAR (that is modified with a passenger seat). that was
 a serious hoot!

What I want to see in person now is MOTOGP. I watch it on TV, but I want to
 see these bikes in person.

You could start with John Jost's concept of Motivated Reasoning.
Here's a good summary paper of this work:

Some actual studies into the issue. I found the self-affirmation counter
strategy to be interesting. There is one thing that the studies seem to
show, and years of watching CF Community posts would certainly back this
upthat you simply cannot persuade a believer by pummeling them with
 facts.

But make them feel good about themselves..? And now you've got a shot.

Also Chris Mooney's book on

A couple of suggestions, first off ignore the anti-republican bs in
the book. Look at the science itself. What he's discussing is a model
that works very well for climate change deniers, anti-vaxxers and the
extreme end of the anti-GMO movement. It does offer an interesting
explanation as to why people do such.

So run a few large scale studies using a Quasi-Experimental approach.
Take a set of schools that are statistically equivalent on the
dependent measures. Then randomly assign them to either the current
approaches or the CCC. Then see what happens over a 5 or 10 year

Most other standards work the same way. You still have standard parts

Kids generally learn in similar ways regardless of geography. National

Aside from the extreme example you mention, I do no see how sexual
attraction should have an impact on the job in the first place. If the
person's co workers can keep their libido in check, why shouldn't the

Unfortunately many straight people haven't realized that they're just

bad. I'd say that the person in question could not reasonably do that job
in a way where their homosexuality was neutral to their work performance
 and ought to go.

Given the same set of requirements, could a gay CF developer do the same
level of work as a straight CF programmer? Does their sexual orientation
have any reasonable negative impact on the job they need to do? That's the
whole notion of rational basis for discrimination that you'll see if

Re: Marriage equality in Oregon

2014-05-19 Thread Larry C. Lyons

Excellent! These judges who've been writing these decisions have been
very erudite on the rights.

Lets see now, that's 17 and 0 so for.

On Mon, May 19, 2014 at 4:53 PM, Judah McAuley ju...@wiredotter.com wrote:

Ruling finally came down 2 hours ago and I am incredibly happy to know that
all of my friends now have the same right to marry that I do.

The best part, however, was the wording in the decision from Judge McShane.
 Some truly beautiful words:

My decision will not be the final word on this subject, but on this issue
of marriage I am struck more by our similarities than our differences. I
believe that if we can look for a moment past gender and sexuality, we can
see in these plaintiffs nothing more or less than our own families.
Families who we would expect our Constitution to protect, if not exalt, in
 equal measure.

With discernment we see not shadows lurking in closets or the stereotypes
of what was once believed; rather, we see families committed to the common
purpose of love, devotion, and service to the greater community.

Where will this all lead? I know that many suggest we are going down a
slippery slope that will have no moral boundaries. To those who truly
harbor such fears, I can only say this: Let us look less to the sky to see
what might fall; rather, let us look to each other ... and rise.

 Brilliant.

The last thing the woman from Northeast Portland probably expected when she
got up Tuesday morning was that she would be attacked by a sword-wielding
 elf.

But that's what happened around 7 a.m. as she drove her red BMW by the
intersection of Southeast 7th and Morrison.

A man dressed in chain-mail with a helmet, shield and carrying a sword and
staff ran into traffic and started attacking her car.

She called 911, reporting that a pirate was attacking her car.

When police got there, they detained Konrad Bass of Glendale, Oregon.

Bass told officers that he wasn't a pirate but a high-elf engaged in
 battle with the evil Morgoth.

Morgoth is a character created by JRR Tolkien in a prequel to the Lord of
the Rings stories. In the stories, he is the character from which all evil
 grew.

Bass, who was cited for criminal mischief and transported to Providence
Hospital, also told officers he had taken LSD.

The woman's car had several puncture marks.
