Re: Windows 2003 + CF8 = 401.3 Error

2008-04-24 Thread Jeremy Denegar
 Hi all,

I am hoping someone can help me out here. I have been trying to
install CF8 on my new Windows 2003 virtual dedicated server. I use the
Standalone Server configuration, installed on all IIS websites. After
the install I am getting 401.3 errors when I try to access the CF
 Administrator or Plesk login.

I recently reprovisioned the server, so everything is back to the
original state, before the CF install.

Here is the IP address of my server: http://208.109.83.61/
An example site hosted on my server: http://www.modologies.com/

It is a GoDaddy server, and it seems like it has to do with user
permissions. Unfortunately, user permissions in Server 2003 is not my
 strong suit.

There are some documented cases I found in a google search but none of
them really provided any results. I am hoping someone can point me in
the right direction. I think it is in regards to this problem:
 http://support.microsoft.com/kb/321390/en-us. It could also be
something in regards to this as well: http://kb.adobe.
 com/selfservice/viewContent.do?externalId=a9eb1badsliceId=1

Plesk and the one website I have setup in Plesk continue to work,
until the CF8 install reaches this point: Installing Web Server
 Connectors

EDIT: I should note, if someone has experience installing CF8 in
Windows 2003 Server, I will give you the details to Remote Desktop to
my server. If you describe the problem and how you fixed it i'll
PayPal you some cash (like $50 or something)...

 Thanks,
 -Erik

First, uninstall any ColdFussion installation from your server. Next, open the
System Properties (i.e. right-click and choose Properties of the My Computer
icon) of the server, open the Advanced tab, click the Performance Settings
button, click the Data Execution Prevention tab, and change the setting to
Turn on DEP for essential windows programs and services only, click OK until
you're back to the desktop and restart the operating system.

This should be all you need to make it work, though the following tips are a
good idea anyway...

Make sure you have cleared everything you can out of the Windows Temp folder
(e.g. C:\WINDOWS\Temp) and your own temp folder (e.g. C:\Documents and
Settings\Your_Account_Name\Local Settins\Temp).

Run the installation at the console of the server, either physically or via
Remote Desktop (i.e. mstsc.exe /console), from the original CD or from a
folder on the server that does not have any spaces in its name (e.g.
C:\CFMX7CD) -- not from a folder with spaces in the name, and not from a UNC
path.

I hope this helps.

8.0.1 FCKEditor file upload issue

2008-04-24 Thread Kay Smoljak
I was surprised and happy to discover in the CF 8.0.1 release notes
that the file upload ability in FCKEditor can now be enabled with a
couple of flags in the js config file. I tried it out (by modifying
the global fckconfig.js in the CFIDE folder) and it works great. Yay
for reading the release notes :)

However, if I copy the entire CFIDE/scripts/ajax/fckeditor folder to a
location under my local web root (in my example, /jscripts/fckeditor/)
and use the basepath attribute of the CFTEXTAREA tag to specify my
local version, launching the file browser brings up an error:
XML request error: Not Found (404)
Requested URL:
http://localhost/jscripts/fckeditor/editor/filemanager/browser/default/../../connectors/cfm/connector.cfm?Command=GetFoldersAndFilesType=ImageCurrentFolder=%2Fuuid=1209024604473
// usual error formatting snipped
Response text:
File not found: /jscripts/fckeditor/editor/filemanager/connectors/cfm/index.cfm

This file does not exist in that location, and there is no equivalent
file in the CFIDE folder, nor in the standalone FCKEditor package that
I downloaded to double-check. The referrer is listed as
http://localhost/jscripts/fckeditor/editor/filemanager/browser/default/browser.html?Type=ImageConnector=../../connectors/cfm/connector.cfm

I tried leaving off leading and trailing slashes in the basepath
attribute and even specifying the full http address in there, but no
dice. In order to use this, I need to get it working with a local
version of the FCKEditor files as I will be deploying to shared
hosting.

Anyone got any ideas? I think I'm going to try decrypting
connector.cfm next to see what it's doing...

Cheers,
K.

RE: My query is returning nothing and/or erroring out

2008-04-24 Thread Adrian Lynch
About your first point, for what you say to happen, you'd also need quotes
around the variable on the left:

cfset someVar = myVar
cfset #someVar# = something

cfoutput
#myVar#
/cfoutput

Without the quotes it'll error.

 cfset #cookiemainline# = 'X'
WTH? maybe you mean
 cfset cookiemainline = 'X'

you're assigning the value to what CF translates cookiemainline into..
Most of the time, you don't need #'s in CF functions

so, you dont need cfif #myValue#..
just do a cfif myValue

to test the query results.. dump the query..
cfdump var=#lookup# /

After that.. try placing some cfoutput's in there to test.. E.G.

CFCOOKIE NAME=mainline VALUE=#FORM.mainline#

cfif COOKIE.mainline NEQ
   cfset cookiemainline = COOKIE.mainline
cfelse
   cfset cookiemainline = 'X'
/cfif

cfoutput#cookiemainline#/cfoutput

See if it's what it's suppose to be

This is a common problem. It sounds like having a single table with all of
the fields plus an extra field for the property 'type' may be a good idea -
or, in you Union query, select the property type for each row and pass that
in the Url, so:

select sa.street_number as prop_street_number...etc
  'acr' as propertyType
from smlc_acr

union all

 select sa.street_number as prop_street_number...etc
  'com' as propertyType
from smlc_com

I have a php site with them, the mail can take awhile but it is
dependant on the mail server load? Haven't noticed too many problems
lately, the only problem was one site was down for a few days because
it wasn't renewed otherwise it isn't too bad.

But hey, like people are saying you do get what you pay for.

With my php site they have been very good, but on some issues they
have taken a long time... I guess it depends on what they consider a
priority...

2008-04-24 Thread Dale Fraser
Those email problems are happening right now for a user I setup on this
service, he companied just days ago that it takes hours for mail to get
delivered and he wants out.

About 6 months ago I had CF server down for 2 days, no explanation as to why
or how long it would take, then it was fixed and no explanation of what the
problem was. The service I found to be very slow also, servers in the US
somewhere, probably in a garage on the end of a cable connection.

I can get better quality than that putting a server at the end of my home
ADSL.

RE: Need some advice on speeding up query...

2008-04-24 Thread Rick Faircloth
Azadi, Dominic...

One thing I did notice is that the db vendor didn't put a field for the
property type in the commercial properties table. When I transfer the data
from my temp table (created when I import the vendor's data from their text
file)
I would need to add a property_type field for the permanent table,
along with the property_id field I've already added.

If I did that for the commercial properties table, then I'd have a
property_type
field in each property table that I could add to the url link and pass to the
property details page to specify which table to search for the property.

Thanks for the input!

This is a common problem. It sounds like having a single table with all of
the fields plus an extra field for the property 'type' may be a good idea -
or, in you Union query, select the property type for each row and pass that
 in the Url, so:

 select sa.street_number as prop_street_number...etc
   'acr' as propertyType
 from smlc_acr

 union all

  select sa.street_number as prop_street_number...etc
   'com' as propertyType
 from smlc_com

I don't think you would need to add the property type field. The table
is the property type right? So, when you select from a given table,
you can just select a string to represent the property type:

SELECT sa.*,
   'acr' as propertyType
FROM smlc_acr sa

UNION ALL

SELECT sc.*,
  'com' as propertyType
FROMsmlc_com sc

etc

(I only put the select * for readability in this example).

Re: Is this Application.cfm abuse?

2008-04-24 Thread Brian Kotek
Very true, I missed the dump part.

As far as things in the application scope, 500k is not a lot. For the 25,000
variables, that does seem like a lot, but it probably depends on what that
means. Are there CFCs in the application scope? Is the app using a framework
like Fusebox? Is it using ColdSpring? All of those things will put data and
CFC instances into the application scope, so if that is the case and it is a
large app, I could easily see 500k of data in the application scope.

I have some documents that should not allow copying of any part of the

Is there a way to totaly disable copying w/ the format set to PDF?

Like this no, but this should work:

select sap.photo_filename as prop_photo_filename_01,
sap.photo_filename as prop_photo_filename_02,
sap.photo_filename as prop_photo_filename_03
  from smlc_acr_photos sap
 where sap.photo_mls_number = sa.mls_number limit 3

You can't do this directly with CFDOCUMENT. With CF8, you can do that with
the new PDF functionality. You might be able to do this with iText.

Are you named Web Exp for Web Expert?
Regexp are good at checking strings, not integer values.
Your javascript validation script that can take a regex is just not
the good tool.
You would need just a couple of lines in Javascript to do the job. IE
(not tested):

function checkValue()
{
var myValue = document.myFormul.myfield.value;
var intValue = parseInt(myValue.10);
if (myValue.match(/^[0-9]+$/)) return  (intValue = 1  intValue =
1400);
if (myValue.match(/^[0-9]+%$/)) return  (intValue = 1  intValue
= 100);
return false;
}

Re: 8.0.1 FCKEditor file upload issue

2008-04-24 Thread Cutter (CFRelated)
Kay,

Just curious, but if you needed the fckeditor directory somewhere else
then why didn't you just download it?

I imagine that your paths are slightly different, now that you've move
the directory, so you'll probably need to adjust that config again.
There's some fairly good documentation on the CF integration on the
FCKEditor Wiki.

I was surprised and happy to discover in the CF 8.0.1 release notes
that the file upload ability in FCKEditor can now be enabled with a
couple of flags in the js config file. I tried it out (by modifying
the global fckconfig.js in the CFIDE folder) and it works great. Yay
for reading the release notes :)

However, if I copy the entire CFIDE/scripts/ajax/fckeditor folder to a
location under my local web root (in my example, /jscripts/fckeditor/)
and use the basepath attribute of the CFTEXTAREA tag to specify my
local version, launching the file browser brings up an error:
XML request error: Not Found (404)
 Requested URL:
 http://localhost/jscripts/fckeditor/editor/filemanager/browser/default/../../connectors/cfm/connector.cfm?Command=GetFoldersAndFilesType=ImageCurrentFolder=%2Fuuid=1209024604473
 // usual error formatting snipped
 Response text:
 File not found:
 /jscripts/fckeditor/editor/filemanager/connectors/cfm/index.cfm

This file does not exist in that location, and there is no equivalent
file in the CFIDE folder, nor in the standalone FCKEditor package that
I downloaded to double-check. The referrer is listed as
 http://localhost/jscripts/fckeditor/editor/filemanager/browser/default/browser.html?Type=ImageConnector=../../connectors/cfm/connector.cfm

I tried leaving off leading and trailing slashes in the basepath
attribute and even specifying the full http address in there, but no
dice. In order to use this, I need to get it working with a local
version of the FCKEditor files as I will be deploying to shared
 hosting.

Anyone got any ideas? I think I'm going to try decrypting
connector.cfm next to see what it's doing...

 Cheers,
 K.

If I did that for the commercial properties table, then I'd have a
  property_type
field in each property table that I could add to the url link and pass to
  the
property details page to specify which table to search for the property.

I don't think you would need to add the property type field. The table
is the property type right? So, when you select from a given table,
you can just select a string to represent the property type:

 SELECT sa.*,
'acr' as propertyType
 FROM smlc_acr sa

 UNION ALL

 SELECT sc.*,
   'com' as propertyType
 FROMsmlc_com sc

 etc

(I only put the select * for readability in this example).

It's just a string, it doesn't *refer* to anything and it could be set
to anything you want - I set it to 'acr' because the table was called
smlc_acr.

So what I am doing there is selecting a 'propertyType' based on the
table that I am selecting from.

Make sense?

Re: New to colocation

2008-04-24 Thread J.J. Merrick
Jason,

I have co-located in the past and currently do in 2 different
datacenters here in town and I also lease a couple of servers at The
Planet.

Depending on your budget it might be best to get something local but
you become the support guy 90% of the time which may or may not be a
good thing.

I don't know if I would co-locate in another city unless I had a large
support package and servers that they could work on.

The servers I have at The Planet I lease and it is like $250 a month
per server. I get full access to it and can do whatever with it. THe
nice part is that if anything goes wrong they are on it and are really
good about anything hardware related. It takes a huge weight off my
shoulders not to have to worry about all that.

As far as the colocation at SunGard in Nashville we pay like $2000 a
month for a full cabinet and various add-ons.

OT - looking for mac developer

2008-04-24 Thread Gonzo Rock
Hey all,

I am searching for a mac application developer, that can take a custom
app built with Microsoft Visual C++ and covert it over to a mac (X-code
proficient). This project has the source available and involves
manipulating Quick Time movies and integration of the movies with tunes from
iTunes libraries... finally burning both a DVD and a video iPod compatable
file.

I would appreciate any ideas on how to proceed with finding a competent
developer to take on this project.

Thanks,
Gonzo

RE: New to colocation - more info added

2008-04-24 Thread Jason Durham
I plan to use a local telecom hotel that is within easy driving
distance. My company is a Microsoft partner so we're going to tackle
the management and maintenance of the box. (Thank you for the
suggestions none-the-less)

I was looking for information about the different ways I'm getting
quotes. Some have structured their plans based upon data transfer and
some just bill on a mbps basis (both using 95th percentile
calculations).

For example...

Host #1: $75 per U with a 1Mbps pipe bursting to 100Mbps. Each
additional 1Mbps is $75 (95th percentile).
Host #2: $150 per U with 1MB pipe and 25GB of data transfer. Each
additional GB of transfer over our block is $4 (95th percentile).

The server will have relatively low utilization for the first 6 months
or so. I'm not sure which billing method is going to work best for our
needs. Host #1 gets our box up and functioning for a fraction of the
cost. It seems too good to be true. I'm new to this arena and I've
been tasked with doing all of the homework. A poor decision would come
back solely on my shoulders. That's why I've come to you fine folks for
guidance. :)

update, it messed up a few of my CFMENUs (the thick upper menu bar, the active
underline text, and messed up submenus). I think the YUI.CSS modification
should fix some issues but...

How did you solve the problem of the submenu indicator being rendered below the
menu item? (in my case it was render ON the menu text)

This kind of sucks because now I need to go through an almost released product
to fix up changes caused by this update.

Re: Need some advice on speeding up query...

2008-04-24 Thread Mary Jo Sminkey
Up till now, my db's have been relatively small
and fairly quick when being queried. I've never had to bother
with indexes or other methods of optimizing queries.

However, I've now got a db of about 6400 real estate properties.

In addition to the indexing, have you considering just caching this query?
Since you say it's typically much heavier on the read versus write side, that's
an ideal situation to cache the data. You can certainly do this in the
database, or easily in ColdFusion as well using the cachedwithin parameter.
All you have to do is add some code that will refresh the cache after any
writes (which is pretty easy to do just by calling the same query with the
cachedwithin set to 0). With complex queries like this that are retrieving
entire sets of data, the performance benefit simply from caching it can be
quite significant, and certainly faster than using LIMIT.

Examining the yui.css file it looks like there are lots of new features added
and the CSS is actually trimmed down from the original yui.css on CF 8.0
release. I wonder if that could be a cause of all these problems.

Re: CF 8 Shared hosting w/o Java 6 Class Loader bug

2008-04-24 Thread Matthew Levine
Ok, I think I found a reasonable solution.

First I set used cfsetting to set the requestTimout to a high number so it
won't timout on start up.

Second, I set up a scheduled task to ping the site every 5 minutes. This seems
to prevent or decrease the number of random slowdowns.

Now my problem is finding a host that allows to do this. Crystaltech does not
allow cfshedule and their task scheduling tool only allows hourly tasks.
HostMySite allows cfschedule but uses SeeFusion to kill any thread at 50
seconds regardless.

Does anyone know of a good shared CF 8 host that offers

cfobject/createObject
cffile
cfschedule

and that allows long running threads when specifically set by the application?

Thanks,
Matt

cfobject and components best practices

2008-04-24 Thread John Ahlen
Hello All,

I've gotten into the habit of beginning a page by creating an object:

cfobject component=#application.cfcpath#reviews name=reviews

Below that, I use any number of cfinvokes thusly:
cfinvoke component=#reviews#
  method=getTopTenTitle
  campus = #URL.Campus#
  returnvariable=qGetTopTenTitle

In the component I'll have functions that are not called by the page. They are
used by other pages. When I turn a component into an object am I needlessly
calling all the functions inside that component and is this not a good idea?

Thanks in advance,

Re: CF 8 Shared hosting w/o Java 6 Class Loader bug

2008-04-24 Thread Tom McNeer
Matthew,

Just to give you the benefit of my painful journey into similar problems --

First, hosting services generally have limitations on long-running requests
that you won't be able to override with cfsetting.

You haven't mentioned exactly what you're doing that involves the
classLoader bug, but I'll assume that you may be using some of the CF
frameworks.

In my case, I have been using a combination of Model-Glue, ColdSpring and
Transfer.

Here's what I've found: pretty much all of these frameworks can be affected
by use in shared hosting, not just by the classLoader bug. Because they all
rely on keeping the framework code cached in the application scope, they can
be affected by the hosting service's application timeout limits, if they're
not in frequent use. Almost all hosting services use pretty short
application and session timeout values on shared servers to avoid memory
problems.

The application timeout issue can be worked around with a scheduled task, as
you have suggested. For the purposes of keeping the application alive, the
task doesn't need to run too often - once an hour should be fine.

None of that has anything to do with the classLoader bug specifically.

The instance in which I have run into classLoader issues on shared hosts is
in the use of Transfer (as Mark and I have discussed on the Transfer list).
Even when I tickled the application with a shared task, my Transfer
objects (which are typically cached) would get dropped out of the machine's
memory as other folks on the same box used it up. And creating the Transfer
objects is where the classLoader bug hits big time.

I have discussed these issues with several hosting services. None of them
are willing to change their policies, and that's not surprising. The
limitations on request time, application timeout and session timeout are all
necessary in an environment where there are many sites sharing a box.

And the services are not willing to downgrade to a previous Java version,
because they say that Adobe has told them that Java 6 is necessary for some
of the speed gain claimed in CF8.

My current strategy is this: I feel okay about using frameworks like
Model-Glue, Mach-II and ColdSpring on a shared host, using a scheduled task
to keep things going. But right now, I haven't found Transfer to be safely
usable on a shared host, because of the classLoader problem. I hate that,
because Transfer is a wonderful tool. But I don't feel I can safely use it
on shared sites for my clients until Sun fixes the bug.

If the problem you're running into is definitely the classLoader bug, then
there's likely no solution for now.

As I say, I don't know much about your particular situation. But I hope some
of this may be useful.

Re: cfobject and components best practices

2008-04-24 Thread Sonny Savage
Only the functions you explicitly call are executed. Creating an object is
copying and instance of that component to memory. This is useful for
maintaining the object's state. When I write CFCs that are actually
intended for use as objects and aren't simply collections of functions, I
create an init() function and call that when creating an object. Using
CreateObject() instead of cfobject makes it easy to call the init in one
line. To extend your example, I'd do it this way:
cfset reviews = CreateObject(component,
#application.cfcpath#reviews).init()
cfset qGetTopTenTitle = reviews.getTopTenTitle(url.Campus)

Re: cfobject and components best practices

2008-04-24 Thread Adrian Moreno
Currently, you're creating an instance on every page that needs it, right? So
let's say you have 1 CFC that's used across 20 pages. It doesn't matter how
many functions are in the CFC and whether or not you use them all. The overhead
comes from creating an instance of the object at least 20 times.

Now let's say that you have 100 users and they each call those 20 pages at
least once. Now you've created an instance of that CFC 2,000 times. This will
increase as you get more users.

Instead, create one instance of the CFC and place it in the application scope
when the application starts. You can do this with onApplicationStart() in
Application.cfc.

You can then reference the CFC from memory like this:

cfinvoke component=#application.reviews#
   method=getTopTenTitle
   campus = #URL.Campus#
   returnvariable=qGetTopTenTitle

You can see a bit more here under Reducing calls to createObject():

Two things I left out:

   1. The init() function needs to have cfreturn this at the end.
   2. When calling functions, you can used named arguments. The last line
could be rewritten as: cfset qGetTopTenTitle =
   reviews.getTopTenTitle(campus=url.Campus) or cfset qGetTopTenTitle =
   reviews.getTopTenTitle(campus:url.Campus)

 Would that be correct?

Yes, exactly. You can for instance, put your query into a CFC and just set the
cachewithin to a variable that defaults to some reasonable time for your
application (say, 2 hours). In your normal read operations you can just call
the method to get your dataset leaving the cache time to the default and it
will just pull it from memory. After a write operation you would call the same
method, passing in a setting that will refresh the cache, but you won't
actually do anything with the dataset that is returned.

You basically can do the same thing by saving the query into an application
variable that you overwrite only after a write to the table(s).

Re: CF 8.0.1 Update and CFMENU

2008-04-24 Thread Andy Chen
This sucks. I would expect that they would have tested these new YUI updates
before releasing it as an official CF update. There was a decent amount of
changes done to the YUI.CSS (it is actually SMALLER then in the original
release) and I think someone at Adobe didn't fully test it.

For the mystery underline (even after modifying YUI.CSS.

This is the normal reference
link rel=stylesheet type=text/css
href=/CFIDE/scripts/ajax/resources/yui/yui.css /

I found it that it is the CFMENU's SELECTEDITEMCOLOR parameter which triggers
the extra CSS tag.

It will add this:
style#hmenu .yuimenuitem a.selected
{background-color:#ff;text-decoration:underline;color:#fff;}
/style

Too bad there is no parameter for text formating (the background color is based
on the selected item color). Add in MENUSTYLE = text-decoration:none; doesn't
do anything.

I am using IE6.

I think CFGRID also got modified (since EXT seems to be updated). Some of the
tutorials on the web on extending the CFGRID function won't work properly
anymore (e.g. drop down list).

GRRR. :(

Re: CF 8 Shared hosting w/o Java 6 Class Loader bug

Tom,

Thanks for the history. I realize that I'm pretty much running a fools errand,
but I do have a tiny amount of hope that a host out there will realize that
there is a market for CF 8 on java 5.

However, Crystaltech shared hosting does in fact allow you to use cfsetting to
extend the request timeout past it's CF admins limit of 30 seconds. They may
also be running seeFusion/fusionReactor to kill long running threads at some
threshhold, but I have not run into it.

Anyway, thank everyone for the valuable input.

Thanks,
Matt

BTW - since you don't actually *use* the dataset that is returned, this is a

You can just throw that particular refresh function into a separate thread so
your user doesn't have to wait for it to complete.

Actually this group is pretty deep and has a lot of breadth too so I wanted
to put it out there... this group usually has MUCH better feedback on all
sorts of programming issues but yes of course I turn to it for ColdFusion
primarily too.

Not being hooked into C++ or other groups I wanted to see if there were a
few brilliant posts that would go a long way in helping... as opposed to
tossing it into a group list of unknowns. Here at least I kinda know the
level of expertiese of the author from reading all these posts... which have
helped me tremendously across the years by the way.

Heh, actually because I assumed that the CF8 integration code was
somehow modified, and this is partly an exercise in getting CFTEXTAREA
going for a presentation I'm working on :)

I downloaded fckeditor 2.5, and tried two things:
1. pointed CFTEXTAREA to the downloaded fckeditor directory using the
basepath parameter
2. used a regular call to fckeditor (i.e. CFMODULE syntax)

Result: exact same error message.

However, digging around in the connector scripts, I see there's a
server path config variable. Seeing as in my dev setup, the files are
in virtual directories pointing to another machine on the network, I'm
guessing that's where my problem lies. The simple obvious setting
didn't work, so I'm gonna mess around a bit more and see if that's the
issue.

Make Verity search skip folders

2008-04-24 Thread Jason Crider
I'm currently hosting with Hostmysite.
Since it's shared hosting they say there's no way to get into the settings to
use the exclude on certain folders.
They've created the collection and said I'd need to use cfindex to do what I
needed and they could turn off the recursive feature.

I'm guessing the best way is to initially leave it as recursive to grab
everything and then turn off recursive and use cfindex to remove the _admin,
_images or whatever other folders I want removed.

Am I thinking along the right lines?

Also, can someone point me to a good source for having that same collection hit
a certain SQL table (some fields). I have all 3 of the new CF8 books and I
don't find it. I could just be missing it though.

I'm using SmarterMail, which does not have that capability. The only delivery

In the mean time, I guess I'll tinker with SQL statements and see what I can
come up with.

Configure your mailserver to do this for you. Most mailservers allow you
