Is it possible.............?
*Sigh* I've been asked if it is possible to run two different versions of CF on a server. I said no but I would ask. Background is they ran into troubles with 4.5 apps not working in 5.0 (not sure what past cfgrid probs, but...) They want to run 4.5 and 5.0 on the same server AND in a pool (cluster) of servers. Win2k, IIS5.CF4.5 5.0(?) Is this possible? Is it a sheer nightmare? Should I bother to hit this send button? Bonnie E. Re: ArcIMS and Cold Fusion
I've been looking at the ESRI site and can't seem to find where they discuss using ColdFusion with ArcIMS. I would be grateful if you could point me as I've got several projects coming up and I would LUV to switch them from ASP to CF. Does anyone on this list have experience with ArcIMS and Cold Fusion? I am have several intranet sites deployed w/cf5 2 w/cfmx. curious about how nicely the product plays with CF, and whether or not it cf is supposed to be ESRI's web language of choice for arcIMS deployments can be used on Web apps 'out-of-the-box'. Do the 'connectors' require a lot of customization? yes, you can just let it rip with the html/js viewer you're done. the connectors don't require much customization but if you're serious you have to learn use AXL. __ Structure your ColdFusion code with Fusebox. Re: programmer vs. developer
So if you have two people... equally qualified, equal personalities, equal in every way except one goes fishing and one likes to program in his spare time... who would you choose. The short and simple answer to that question is the guy at home... if for no reason other than he doesn't have to dock the boat before logging into the server to fix the problem code that only rears it's head on the weekends. ;-) I would put up for consideration that maybe the one that is coding on weeknights and weekends might not have softskills that I need or might be(come) a disgruntled employee. A person who programs days, nights and weekends might indicate negative things such as they don't have people skills or they're unable to perform in non-coding functions or they're neglecting personal goals, needs and relationships. If you don't need the people you hire to work in a team environment or wear more than one hat, maybe that's ok for you. Although I would again say that hiring people and expecting them to NOT have a balanced life is asking for dissastisfied employees and low morale and high turnover. BUT .. I say alla that and I code days, nights and weekends G. (GAWD I need a life!) Bonnie __ This list and all House of Fusion resources hosted by CFHosting.com. Did you ever get this working? I had a rotten time of it with my Win98 and the singleserver CF5.0. NO one at the CFUN02 including Macromedia people could help me and no one had heard of such a situation. I'll admit I'm pretty much a brain washed MM Partner, but I'd say they're pushing Flash for a number of reasons. 1) You can build a full web application with it now via Flash Remoting. VERY easily I might add. 2) It isn't just for movies and intros, BUT the public still thinks it is, we as developers are ahead of the public in what we see coming out on the web. The more MM educates people that Flash isn't just movies, the better. That's what I see them doing now. Have you ever seen an post on Slashdot about Flash. All those guys says is skip intro this, skip intro that. They don't even know what's possible since MX came out, and it's been four months. 3) Server load, if you build an application with Flash, the amount of data that needs to be pushed back and forth between a client and server can be greatly reduced, which can mean MAJOR bandwidth/transfer cost reductions to your client. 4) It's a universal component. People can view your application on windows, mac or the right phone without worrying about CSS and JS issues, etc... I'll end it at that, but I'd say number two is the most important reason. t ** Tyler M. Re: Does Macromedia have some current strong Flash agenda?
Well another problem is that Flash is associated as a tool for graphics artists. The IT departments I've been dealing with are full to the hilt with programmers and no creatives. And the prejudice is you need to be a graphics person to create any decent Flash. Bonnie E. My only issue with the Rich Client thing is... well... there's only one branden hall in the world and Mr. Watts, I'm sure you're doing a good job keeping him busy. Seriously, to truly be a good developer into Flash Remoting, I think we'd have to have that much knowledge, because as it stands... getting Data into Flash is easy, but I have a feeling a lot of CF developers (like myself) are going to scratch their heads and go, Now what? Ideally, this would be great if your business was split equally between CF / Flash MX people and you had a great team of both that could learn from each other. My problem is, that... at the company I work for, only the partners get to play with Flash and even then, they're hacks and... don't even know that Flash MX is out yet (nor the power they can do with it). Sigh... did I mention I'm looking for a new job? ;) ~Todd At 07:30 PM 8/1/2002 -0400, you wrote: Is it me, or has anyone else noticed there's a REALLY strong push for Flash lately at all the CFUGs and conferences?? Is there any particular reason for this? Sure. MM sells CF, MM sells Flash, MM would like more money! On a more serious note, though, I think that MM's strategy is to push developers into what you might call rich client applications. There are a lot of limitations in what you can do with an HTML GUI. Flash goes far beyond those limitations, allowing you to build applications that provide significantly more functionality. The reason that web applications are popular isn't because of the great HTML interface - it's probably close to as bad an interface as possible. So, the logical next step is to provide web-based applications with better interfaces. This was the original promise of Java, if you remember back a few years. Flash is a tool which can fulfill that promise. I like Flash - don't get me wrong. But I view it as a GUI frill that I doubt I can sell to my clients who want a functional business application. Anyone here can tell me why/how I could sell them Flash which would be over and above CF development? It's a common programmers' mistake to think about interfaces as a frill. For an end-user, the interface is ALL THERE IS. Good interface design is necessary for a good application. HTML interfaces may be passable, but I wouldn't consider them good - you'd really hate to use every function on your computer through such an interface, wouldn't you? So, to counteract this misunderstanding, you might show functional business applications written in Flash to your clients. In such an application, you'll see things that would be impractical or impossible in HTML - using Flash to add functionality, instead of skip intro glitter. These applications are out there. Re: Does Macromedia have some current strong Flash agenda?
Yeah no kidding! I sure can't convince them it's cheaper to hire two different developers! And I sure would hate to think of the old days when programmers designed the GUI :(. At least now, a GUI is created and design templates formed. And then the programmers can build functionality till the cows come home. VERY cheap that way compared to needing a Flash guru for each app built. Bonnie E. That's my point... Flash developers. I'm talking about the need for Flash / CFMX developers to be _1_ person. It will take time for this to happen, it's not going to happen overnight. I still think it's important to have people that are GREAT in CFMX and then other people that are GREAT in Flash MX.. but, those that will be GREAT in both apps will be rare, but ... within 2-3 years, won't be that rare. We'll see. ~Todd At 04:50 PM 8/1/2002 -0700, you wrote: I solved the Flash MX problem by hiring one of the guys who wrote the Flash MX certification test and is writing the accompanying book. Re: slightly OT: PHP links for CF programmers
Not that I'm an expert PHP developer (yet), but it doesn't seem too hard. I've only built 2 apps in it so far, but it's similar to JSP or ASP. I bought a Wrox book I really like called Beginning PHP4. I highly recommend it. Bonnie E. So I'm looking for any PHP resources that CF programmers may have found useful. I've dabbled in PHP in the past but it looks like I'm going to have to jump in all the way this time - which should be fun actually!! problem with studio 5 single server wrecking IE browser
I am having a terrible problem with the single server that came with CFStudio 5. My IE browser is wrecked when the server is loaded in startup or if it's loaded before IE is loaded. The browser opens, but many pages won't show styles or javascript or images. I called Macromedia and they said they would help me for $250 by phone or I can email. I used their email, and that tech refused to help me! I've searched for a patch but can't find one. I'm appalled at Macromedia's disgraceful treatment, but I supposed that's a story for another day. I've rigged things to work by putting IE into startup and removing CF from startup and load that manually. My computer is win98, browser is IE6, using PWS from the NT pack. I used to have CF 4.5 on this machine and everything worked fine then. CF 4.5 was uninstalled before installing 5. Any help on this would be appreciated. Bonnie E. Re: problem with studio 5 single server wrecking IE browser
It's any site in IE6 (local and public sites) but it only happens if I've loaded the CFServer first before opening IE. It's not all sites, but it seems to be all sites that run script like bankofamerica.com or my site. Straight HTML sites appear with images though. Have you ever heard of something like this or any ideas what might be causing this seeming conflict with the server and the browser? Bonnie E. Well, honestly, I can see why Macromedia may be unhelpful in this case, not that this excuses anyone's bad behavior. The CF server is a relatively simple application, with no GUI components, and there's no reason that it should interact with your browser install at all. When you say that IE won't open images or use styles or JavaScript, does this only apply to files on your server, or to files on other people's servers? That is, if you go to a public URL that uses images, styles and JavaScript, those things won't work then?
