RE: AS400 Admin ODBC Setup

2003-02-20 Thread Chris White
I have used Client Access Express V4R4 and V5R1. It works really good
with ColdFusion 4.51. Setup your connection to the AS/400 and choose to
use this id every time and prompt as needed. Create your datasource and
put in your lib that your application will need to have access to within
the ODBC setup. When you go in CF Admin you should see your ODBC data
datasource. Select it and put in your id and password that you will use
for the AS/400, save it. From there you should be able to verify the
datasource within CF Admin.

As a word of caution - If you are running CFMX I have been having the
AS/400 turn away connections under a heavy load then it gets so bad that
the connection just stops working. Restarting the ODBC services clears
up the connection until a heavy load hits it again. The definition of a
heavy load is 40 to 80 concurrent users. I am looking into using JDBC
to the AS/400.

I'm working in a new environment that uses the Clinet Access ODBC driver
that creates a connection with an AS/400. The driver is installed on the
Web/ColdFusion server and I know it works because Microsoft Access can
connect to it. A system DSN is set up in data sources control panel and
the server is NT 4.

How do I set up the ODBC data source in the ColdFusion Administrator. I
hacked in a few things and it's throwing this error:

see if you get a response?

cfhttp url=https://www.ups.com/ups.app/xml/Rate; method=POST
cfhttpparam type=formfield name=xml value='?xml version=1.0?

AccessLicenseNumber/AccessLicenseNumber

I get Connection Failure from a CrystalTech MX server, but unless I'm
losing my mind I was able to connect a couple days ago.

Thanks.

RE: MM Pricing Problem on CFMX for J2EE

2003-02-03 Thread Chris White
Interesting - I have been running a few ColdFusion Ent. servers since 4.5 and we had
purchased a 2 year support agreement. The support runs out this year.

I would like to move to a J2EE version but based on what you were told makes a person
wonder what to do. I have paid enough for the Ent. versions.

I don't see any value in the Ent. version any more. It does not share sessions across
multiple servers like the versions before ColdFusionMX. I would like to move to Java
Sessions but I need a Java Application server like JRUN or Websphere to manage the
sessions. Wish that if I go to J2EE and started with JRUN that if down the road I
moved to Websphere I could do that without another cost. What is a person to do?

Subject: MM Pricing Problem on CFMX for J2EE

There are so many questions about license issues and what is Macromedia going to do to
entise me to move to a J2EE version.

When CFMX came out we immediately upgraded on internal servers...we would have like to
purchase the J2EE version (for WebLogic) but it wasn't out yet...so we purchased the
Enterprise standalone version for use until J2EE was out

I was just told it will cost $2800+ to transfer each license to the J2EE version
There must be some mistake...can someone form MM please comment? Can u not transfer
licenses?

Many thanks,

RE: AS400 Integration

2003-01-23 Thread Chris White
You are correct DB2 is an add-on. We are doing ODBC calls and calling stored
procedures that are RPG programs on the AS/400. We are using Client Access Express
V5R1. We have been doing this for around 3 years. I would install the most current
version of Client Access Express with the service packs on your web server that is
supported by the version of the AS/400 operating system. There are like 4 TCP ports
that you will have to open up on your firewall to be able to access the Database part
of Client Access. Send me a note off list if you have any detailed questions.

Chris White
[EMAIL PROTECTED]

I haven't touched an AS400 system in years, but I have a client with a legacy AS400
system that runs their entire business. One of the requirements for some of the new
systems they want is that they have to integrate with this AS400 system.

Is it true that most if not all AS400 business systems have an underlying DB2 Database
for storing the data itself..?

Thanks,
Drew Harris

RE: Apostrophes become boxes and other odd characters in CFMX?

2003-01-13 Thread Chris White
I had the same issue and it was a character set issue. Here is the code that
I used to fix my application:

cfprocessingdirective pageencoding=iso-8859-1
cfset setEncoding(form,iso-8859-1)
cfset setEncoding(URL,iso-8859-1)
cfcontent type=text/html; charset=iso-8859-1

Another discussion about character sets:
http://webforums.macromedia.com/coldfusion/messageview.cfm?catid=3threadid=403175highlight_key=ykeyword1=MXkeyword2=character

Chris White

Unfortunately, This was a straight upgrade from CF5 to CFMX and I haven't
changed anything about the way it handles char encoding. I am playing with it
some now, but do you have an example of the things I might need to change,
tags/etc to get this to work?

 Quoting Cameron Childress [EMAIL PROTECTED]:

After upgrading an application from CF5 to CFMX, I have run into a
situation where some apostrophes and quote marks are being
transformed into weird boxes and other strange characters. This
  only seems to happen
 when users
cut/paste text from word, and not when they type it directly
 into the text
form fields. I have a feeling that this has something to do
 with the JDBC
drivers, but wanted to ask the list first in case anyone else
 has run into
  this problem.

I have a feeling it has to do with charsets. Are you explicitly
specifying the charset everywhere? Have you taken advantage of the
 upgrade and switched to
 unicode in the process?

You can always make the parts visible by saving the entire email message

as a .uue and opening it in your favourite archiver. The talk about
attachments is merely because attachments are the vector for Yaha.

Good thing it had no effect on this end... which makes me wonder if
others on the CF list got it with an attachment?

The HoF list code turns it into an inline message.

What I'm interested in is comments and ideas on balancing Security

RE: Getting Username/Password Challenge (CF5)

2002-11-02 Thread Chris White
I had one server that I could not get it to prompt for an id and
password after setting the permissions. I referred to:

http://www.macromedia.com/v1/Handlers/index.cfm?ID=1533Method=Full

In IIS Administrator go to properties on the directory and under
Application Settings it said Default Application and it was grayed out.
I choose create new application and I let it use the folder name for the
name of the application. Then it started working. I had to do this on
each directory that I wanted to prompt for id and password after setting
the permissions. Go figure... I did not have days to try to figure out
what is different with that server. I tried to duplicate the problem
but I have not been successful. I don't know if this will help you or
not

Did you get a copy of the cd with your book? I did not get a cd. The
publisher said that the description was a misprint and there was not a cd.
Ben said a couple of weeks ago that he was going to put the code on
www.forta.com, it is not there yet. The book is interesting but would be a
lot better with the code.

Just received my copy today. At a glance, it looks like exactly what I needed

RE: BigIP

To use or not to use Sticky Sessions should not be the decision of the

Dave,

It was several months ago that I delt with this exact same situation.
It was URLScan and CF5 and I also got the additional header info
appearing in the page itself. The reason for this is due to an
additional line feed being placed in the header. This causes your
browser to prematurely think the headers are finished.

I trouble ticket with Microsoft and Macromedia was opened but each
company blamed the other for the problem. Microsoft said that it was
Macromedia's problem because they don't do headers correctly. Their
proof of this was the fact that .ASP pages don't exhibit the same
behavior. You'll notice that .ASP pages put their headers up higher
and so they actually appear in the header section, not after the double
line feed.

Macromedia claimed that the problem was Microsoft's fault. Their
proof was that everything worked fine if you uninstalled URLScan.

While both companies have a point, my personal judgment is that it's
Macromedia's fault. My reasoning is simple... the problem does NOT
exist in ASP, PHP, or PERL. This tells me that whatever/however
ColdFusion is doing their headers it doesn't seem to be right. But my
testing seems to indicate that it's the URLScan utility that's adding
the additional linefeed and causing the problem. So, both parties are
right and wrong at the same time. If either one would change
something it would work fine.

I also want to point out that this was with IIS5, URLScan, and CF5. I
do not know if a new version of URLScan has come out and I have not
tested this with CFMX.

In the end, my solution was to simply uninstall URLScan.

If not, they should be tireless with your questions. This would be

This is blatant advertising, I admit it, but ... :-)

Two new CF books are out and shipping (despite Amazon.com still stating
not yet published and showing the wrong screenshot):

ColdFusion MX Web Application Construction Kit is the new revision of
the original and best-selling CF title. Besides lots of updates and
enhancements, new to this edition is coverage of CFC's, writing UDF's,
Flash Remoting basics (more coverage in the title below), use of
Dreamweaver MX, and more. Oh, and by popular demand (or complaint) the
reference appendixes are all back in actual print. The book is now 1500
pages, and was co-authored by Nate Weiss with additional content by Leon
Chalnick and Angela Buraglia. Book page is at
http://www.forta.com/books/0321125169/, and the direct link to
Amazon.com is
http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ISBN=0321125169/benfortascoldfusA/.

Reality ColdFusion: Flash MX Integration is the first title in my new
Reality ColdFusion series - a set of higher-end case-study based books
that walk through complete development efforts, from concept and
requirements to development and delivery. This title covers ColdFusion /
Flash integration and is authored by Dennis Baldwin, Randy Drisgill,
Derek Lu, and Matt Tatum. Applications created are a jukebox, an expense
reporting app, a mail client, and a chat system. Book page is at
http://www.forta.com/books/0321125150/, and the Amazon.com link is
http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ISBN=0321125150/benfortascoldfusA/.
(The next two books in this series will be on Intranets and Content
Management and J2EE Integration - stay tuned).

Enjoy!

RE: Installing CFMX on a drive other than C:

I second Dave's suggestion. I have always installed Windows NT or 2000 on the
C drive and D is the CD and E is where software and Inetpub is placed. I have
not had any problems with that configuration.

Chris White

Has anyone installed ColdFusion MX (Pro or Ent) on a drive
other than C? Something like D or F?

We are setting up a new webserver and are currently planning
the partitions. The idea was submitted to me to put the CFMX
installation on D instead of C. Pros or cons to doing this?
Does it wreak havoc on the Java (JRE) implementation?

Yes, you can install CF MX to any drive you like. I'd strongly recommend that
you install it to a partition other than your system partition, which is
usually C. I'd recommend that for all software you install on a server. It
doesn't affect the JRE at all.

RE: MX inSite Magazine

2002-07-23 Thread Chris White

That was exactly my point, no ColdFusion, no rich content with Flash. I
was referring to MX not only being ColdFusion but also the other MX
products.

Do you *really* care? At the end of the day, all these serverside
technologies do the EXACT same thing. I'm more dissappointed there's no
'rich' content delivery/capture. They could've at least used flash for
the forms.

It's difficult to make a judgement yet since they've only come out with

one issue so far and they've yet to come out with a print issue. I
believe the first issue is available for free on their website in pdf
format. They sent an e-mail out last week saying that the first print
issue will be available in early August. It looks promising, but it
does seem like a lot of ground to cover in one magazine.

RE: CFMX Administrator error

2002-07-21 Thread Chris White

I ran into this very same problem also and I could not find anything on
it at www.macromedia.com/support. I uninstalled and reinstalled and
that fixed the problem. I hated to do that but I did not know of
anything else to do.

One of my co-workers has actually run into this a few times, or at least
I think it was this error. What she found was that the neo-query.xml
file was missing, for unknown reasons. The neo-query.bak file still
existed, so she copied that to neo-query.xml and it worked fine again.
She's still working on figuring out what caused the problem in the first
place.

I can check with her tomorrow to see if it was this exact error or not.

RE: Learning Management System (LMS)

2002-07-17 Thread Chris White

I have used Pathlore On-line Learning System. It is not the full LMS
with the registrar. They are wanting to get the users of their lite
version Pathlore OLS to the full LMS. We purchased their OLS right
after it was developed and we have had a lot of problems that over time
we have worked thru. We have an extranet area where users sign in and I
did not want them to have to sign in again to have access to an LMS
system so we automated the login and the ColdFusion page automatically
logs them in.

You may find a demo and more information at http://www.pathlore.com

I was wondering if anyone knew of an LMS system that was available
either for sale (cheap) or opensource.

I know that some places have been using the viewlets and such to demo
ideas and ways of doing things, but I need something more
comprehensive...but cannot afford or want to use the services of someone
like SABA or IBM, even though they are alot larger than I would be
interested in right now.

Any direction would be great.

RE: Capturing an e-mail address

2002-07-11 Thread Chris White

Take what Dave has suggested and also have an id for link and have all
of the links in your newsletter go the same ColdFusion page and you will
know the user and the article/link they were after. In that same page
write a record transaction table along with the article that they want
to see then redirect the user to the correct page on your site.

Subject: Re: Capturing an e-mail address

Each email that you send out goes to a person in a DB, right? So each
person has an ID, right? So if you put a link of
http://www.site.com/index.cfm?userid=2577 then the index.cfm can take
the
userid and translate it into the person, right? Is that what you want?

Well, yes and no. I see what you're saying, but it's not that simple for
me.
As I said, the e-mail is one HTML template that is sent through our mass

e-mailer provider to the list of subscribed addresses. It's essentially
the
same thing as writing only one e-mail, but CC'ing a boatload of people.
Using your approach, we'd have to generate a unique HTML file for each
user
we send the e-mail to in order to append the proper userID to the links.

Remember, I don't have access to CF or any other scripting languages to
loop
over a record set of userIDs. So what I send has to be generic.

For example, to blindly log usage without regard to who it is, a simple
a
href=filename.cfm?logMe=1Filename/a will do the trick. Then, on my
site, I just look for the logMe flag and increment the usage. That's not

hard. But now the trick to is say, log this person's e-mail
address(assuming they've clicked the link via their e-mail), somehow
figuring out how to identify a user through one static HTML file.
That's
what I don't quite know how to do.

Generating a separate HTML file for each user in the database is too
much
and unreasonable. That's why I was hoping there might be a smarter way
of
doing this.

Thanks,
Dave.

I don't see how this script could possibly verify that an email address exists
without sending an email to the person for verification. You could easily do
this in CF without paying $50.

cfx_spell on ColdFusionMX

Has anyone got the custom tag cfx_spell to run on ColdFusionMX? The install

seems to register ok but when I run a page and call the custom tag I get the
following:

RE: CFMX and .NET on the same computer?

2002-06-06 Thread Chris White

I have installed .net and ColdFusionMX on 5 different Windows2000
Servers. If .net is on first either ColdFusion has problems installing
or .net breaks. I have uninstalled .net and IIS and then did the
following:

1. Installed IIS
2. Applied IIS Security fix.
3. Installed ColdFusionMX
4. Installed .net framework.

Every problem that I have had with .net has been a security issue.

Thanks for the heads up. I'll be installing on Win2K Pro, but will
likely see similar problems. Maybe .Net needs to be installed first? or
Last? I've seen the order apps are installed affect performance
before. we'll see. But to be on the safe side, I'll be Ghosting my

CLR and CFMX to cooperate. I installed Apache and it runs fine no. No
conflicts with CF or with .NET - IIS seems to have been the big issue.
