Hi Aditya,

We’re searching for unique people that are passionate and ready to step up
to make change in our world – to help us tackle global poverty at scale by
building not-for-profit social businesses that impact the lives of millions
around the world.

engageSPARK is a groundbreaking platform that empowers organizations to
dramatically extend the reach and effectiveness of their pro-poor programs.
engageSPARK is the *EASIEST* to use engagement platform that empowers
non-IT staff at organizations of any size to build interactive Automated
Call (IVR) & 2-Way SMS programs to engage their beneficiaries at scale,
quickly, and affordably. Unlike all other tools that require training or IT
people, have implementation or monthly subscription fees, and lack global
telco integration, engageSPARK is used to build programs in minutes,
cheaper, and in any of the 200+ countries.

engageSPARK’s global customers include UN’s World Food Programme, Asian
Development Bank, Mercy Corps, Intel, and a global top 5 Internet company
(we can’t name them). These organizations and many others have used
engageSPARK in 90+ countries to make social change in the areas of
Agriculture, Health, Finance, Elections, Refugee Services, Disaster
Planning & Response, and even increasing access to jobs for people living
in remote areas with very limited opportunities. We’re a not-for-profit
social enterprise.

We’ve made quite a bit of progress since our launch a year ago: the GSBI
Social Enterprise Accelerator
 accepted us
as one of the top 17 social enterprises globally for its program. The
Mulago Foundation awarded us its Rainer
Fellowship for 2016. DBS-NUS named us a top 12 Social Venture in Asia
. And
Forbes Magazine recognized engageSPARK as a “Leading Startup.”

The positions are based in beautiful Cebu City, Philippines – which was
ranked #4 in 6 Global Alternative Cities to Silicon Valley to Start Your
Company !

[change] Talk by Nimmi Rangaswamy (IIIT Hyderabad) on 5/19

2017-05-18 Thread Aditya Vashistha
Hi all,

Nimmi Rangawamy is visiting UW on May 19th. Nimmi has done
fascinating
work in examining digital practices of low-income, low-literate youth in
urban India. She will give a talk (details below) at 2:30 in CSE 503.
Please consider attending it. Also, please sign-up here

if you would like to meet with her.

*Title:* The Surplus Self at the Digital Margins: Case Studies of Digital
Life from Urban India
*Date:* May 19 (Friday) 2:30pm
*Place:* CSE 503, Paul G Allen Center

*Abstract:*
In this talk, I will briefly outline my journey as a social anthropologist
in the field of HCI and ICTD and working beside software Industry
specialists , techies and currently among AI scientists. Through my
research projects, I will trace the evolution of the anthropological lens
in understanding and broadening technology adoption in the context of
developing nations. Having spent the last decade doing ethnographic
fieldwork on the use of new information technologies in emerging markets,
I’ve encountered time and again a host of media practices that flagrantly
defied stereotypical understanding and framing of ICT use in the global
south displaying rich, informed and focused use of mobile and internet
technologies
Some of the questions I try to unpack in this talk are the following: As
even the less-privileged in developing countries become ambient
broadcasters to stay connected, how will these digital broadcasting
behaviors seep through to impact other lived spheres of life, lifestyles
and opportunities? Will the social dimension of the surplus digital self
play out, how and where? Is it an artifice to draw boundaries between the
digital and other dimensions of the social when we discuss impact,
outcomes, empowerment and social mobility?

*Short Bio:*
Nimmi Rangaswamy works at the interface of Digital HCI and Anthropology.
She recently joined as Professor at the the Kohli Centre on Intelligent
Systems, Indian Institute of Information Technology, IIIT, Hyderabad.

Formerly, she was a Senior Researcher and Area Manager of Human
Interactions research at the Xerox Research Centre India, Bangalore. Nimmi
is also currently Adjunct Professor at the Indian institute of Technology,
Hyderabad teaching several courses on HCI and the Social Sciences.

[change] ICTD2022: Call for Open Sessions

2022-03-03 Thread Aditya Vashistha
Hi all,

Please find below the call for submissions for open sessions at ICTD 2022.
Apologies for cross posting. I'd appreciate it if you can forward it in
your networks.

Call for Submissions for Open Sessions

12th International Conference on Information & Communication Technologies
and Development (ICTD 2022) <https://ictd.org/>, June 27-29, 2022

University of Washington in Seattle, USA

--

The 12th International Conference on Information and Communication
Technologies and Development (ICTD) invites you to submit two-page
proposals for open sessions by April 1, 2022. ICTD 2022 will be hosted at
the University of Washington in Seattle, USA on June 27-29 2022. ICTD as a
field aims for inclusivity and ICTD 2022 as a conference aims to include
perspectives and participation from industry, policymakers, civil society,
practitioners, academia, and government. The Open Sessions provide this
opportunity to ensure the representation of projects, experiences, and
viewpoints that will benefit the ICTD community, especially where they do
not fit the full papers or notes formats.

Open sessions
<https://ictd.org/ictd2022/participate/call-for-open-sessions/> typically
include multiple presenters convening around important, cross-cutting
themes. They may take the form of panels, workshops, “ignite” talks,
debates, participatory activities, or other types of communication and
exchange. Successful proposals will work towards inclusiveness, relevance,
and excellence, and examples from some previous conferences can be found
here: ICTD 2016 <https://ictd2016.info/schedule/> and ICTD 2012
<http://ictd2012.org/open-sessions/>. Session organizers may extend
invitations to particular participants to attend, or present based on
emerging themes in ICTD; likewise, participation is open to any conference
attendee who wishes to join in on the day of the session.

To propose an open session, please fill out this Google form
<https://forms.gle/XWC2kj6rr84TrkQDA>, providing a 75-word summary and an
additional 2-page description detailing your goals for the session and how
you plan to achieve them. The deadline for submission is April 1, 2022, at
11.59 pm Anywhere on Earth (AoE).
Guidelines

Open Sessions welcome a variety of submissions and formats. We invite
extended abstracts that include proposals for panels, workshops, doctoral
colloquium submissions, young researchers meet-ups, and more.

Open sessions will be 90 minutes in length by default. They can also be 180
minutes long, but only if there is sufficient justification. Although
sessions (and session proposals) will be held in English, we are also open
to proposals for sessions in other languages. In such cases, please note
the proposed language and indicate why it is important to the session
topic. Given the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, we also expect some attendees
to be joining the open sessions remotely. So, please describe an
appropriate plan to make open sessions inviting and accessible to both
remote and in-person attendees.

Proposals for sessions will be reviewed and assessed according to the
criteria below.

   -

They should be accessible to a highly interdisciplinary ICTD audience.
   -

They should be lively, inclusive, and participatory in style and content.
   -

They should be on topics relevant to the ICTD community.
   -

They should demonstrate careful planning and a clear agenda.

Examples of sessions and formats, based on prior years are indicated below.

   -

A panel of researchers and practitioners to discuss and brainstorm
   post-PhD opportunities for ICTD researchers.
   -

A workshop organized by 2-3 researchers to discuss in small breakout
sessions the role of gender (what it is and what it should be) in ICTD
   projects.
   -

A short course on co-design in research areas pertaining to global
   health.
   -

A workshop to set an agenda for future research on digital financial
   services.
   -

An ice-breaker session for ICTD researchers and practitioners to learn
about and from each other and their work.
   -

A series of short, lightning talks followed by an open discussion, where
each talk represents an extended abstract on a common, chosen topic such as
   caste-related inequities in ICTD contexts.

Dates

April 1, 2022: Deadline for submission of Open Sessions (using this form
