[Chat] Windows?

2016-12-12 Thread Eric A. Perlman
Since there seems to be some life on this list again...

I need to replace either a large pane of (broken) glass or (more likely)
two complete windows.

Any suggestions of contractors would be appreciated,

Re: [Chat] [Discussion] taxes

2012-02-02 Thread Eric A. Perlman
One suggestion on Maryland taxes (and to save $19.99 on the state E-File
fee): The Maryland form 502 is straight forward, and can be filled out
directly on the Comptroller of Maryland's web page.

The trick is to use your tax software to print out the 502 for free,
go to the web site, and type in the values. It takes no more than 5
minutes, you will still get quick turn around time, and save $20.

That includes sales tax. And last year and the year before, I paid
$19.95 to e-file Maryland income tax, and I would guess it will cost me
the same again this year.. So I paid about what you paid.

Re: [Chat] insulating tin box bumpouts?

2012-01-05 Thread Eric A. Perlman
Many of us have closets which extens roughly half a foot outside of the house.
All the seperates the inside of the closet and the outside world is a very
thin layer of metal.

Think of nice, cold, clothing in the morning all winter long...

I think most have since been filled in with brick, which is totally reasonable,
but I'd bemoan the loss of the closet.

Re: [Chat] [Discussion] Power company rep

2008-04-15 Thread Eric A. Perlman
This is most likely a semi-legit scam. Yes, they are most likely
are a company which can supply you power, but they are hardly the
company. The 8% savings is also likely true, perhaps only for a year,
but you'll be stuck with a multi-year contract after which point the
rates will go sky high.

The reason they want to see your bill is to get your account number.
This is necessary for them to tell BGE to switch you over to them as
your supplier. The only other thing they need is your signature,
which they usually get when they say sign here to save money!.

I heard of a company going door-to-door like this elsewhere in the north
east. Google for IDT Energy to read thousands of horror stories of
people suckered into switching...

I am not trying to suggest that it makes sense to stick with BGE as
your energy supplier. Just don't do it at the door. These guys
prey on the fact we all dislike these ever increasing energy bills.

[Chat] found black cat on 2600 blk N. Hunter

2007-05-25 Thread Eric A. Perlman
For the past two evenings we've had a visotor... a nice,
starving, small black female cat with a distinctive light
spot near the tail. She is or was someone's pet --
she has a collar (with no information) on, and loves to
approach people and be pet. She has had her claws removed
-- a sure sign she was never meant to be outside.

You can see a picture of her here:
http://hssl.cs.jhu.edu/~eric/foundcat.jpg

If any of you know anything about this cat, please let me know.

In the mean time, we'll feed her once or twice between now
and Tuesday when I suspect we'll have to call animal comtrol
or the SPCA. Does anyone have any experience with this?

Re: [Chat] [Discussion] Jones Fall Sewer project

2006-12-06 Thread Eric A. Perlman
We were given initial notice of this, through a number of fliers
and people knocking on our door, over 6 months ago. The initial
estimate of work was early October ... two months behind schedule
is nothing, apparently, for a project like this.

Thankfully we haven't found things to be too bad, probably because
I am across the street. Having walked by the big dig at 27th
Calvert I predict the worst will come as they start to bang lots
of large metal supports into the ground (is that what they started
doing today?)

Re: [Chat] stolen chair from backyard on the 2600 block of guilford

2005-08-23 Thread Eric A. Perlman
I certainly agree, I would like to see increased patrolling on
*every* alley in the CVBD -- not just the ones where the crimes of,
any given week have occured, or those who are the most vocal.
The two time periods that also seem the most important are the
afternoon and late at night, when few people are around.

I wish I did not need to learn my lesson the hard way about
leaving cheap things in a yard with a locked fence... *sigh*

That looks like a possible good idea, but I'm sure that the problem is more

It would be nice if the Safety Team snaked their way through the entire CVCBD
taxed alley areas at some reasonable interval.

This rash of burglaries is depressing, especially since they seem to be
taking place while people are at work and can't do anything about them. I'm
thinking we need to take some action immediately and have two proposals.

First, the CVCBD has a safety team. Much as I support the CVCBD, the Safety
Team has never seemed to me to do much good. However, I'm proposing that we
call Wes Tolbert, who is in charge, and ask him to make sure that the team
patrols Hunter Alley between 25th and 28th regularly--like every half hour.
There's absolutely no reason why they can't do this for two or three weeks.

I'll call Wes tomorrow, but other people should call him as well at
410-235-4411 (not sure what his extension is). It might also be a good idea
to call Janet Levine, the CVCBD director, at the same numbder and tell her
we need daylight security in the alley to stop these thefts.

If our efforts to get the security patrol out don't work (and I'm just
hoping, not holding my breath), I'm wondering if other people would be
willing to pool resources to hire a private security guard for the 2600 and
2700 blocks of Guilford for a while. I've no idea how much it would cost,
but there are a lot of us along the alley. I know people are going to
immediately say that the police and the CVCBD and Hopkins patrols should be
doing this work, but obviously they aren't, and if we can't get them to I
opt for doing whatever we can to show these miscreants that we mean
 business.
I may be the lone voice shouting in the wilderness, but it seems like we
 have to do something.

 Emily
