During the snowstorm a few weeks ago we had a leak in our bedroom.? Now that
the weather is finally better we aim to investigate to see if it's something
that can be foxed with a patch.? However, if the roof needs
repair/re-coating, does anyone have any recommendations for a local roofer?

A lot of my clients have used Tim Bittner of Precision Roofing. His office #
 is 410-235-5753.

Another roofer doing a fair amount of work in the neighborhood is Ricky
LaRicci who advertises in The Charles Villager.

Also, I thought that I would point out that several people I know thought
they had a leaky roof when in fact water was entering through deteriorated
mortar joints on exterior brick walls.

sell it to me for half off.  I thought he was lying as I don't think my

company name and they operate in several states and are known scam artists who
prey on the elderly when in fact the meat is outdated.  I called the police to
report him.  Name of the company is Butcher's Choice of Baltimore, 410.553.6092
was listed on the truck but I've heard that those calls get forwarded to an
out-of-state office.

Maya,

Kathleen likes Standard Cleaners on 31st St.
(just east of Donna's) and has her alterations
done there.  I think they're a good price.

I use Mr. Nifty's on Greenmount.
They're probably not cheaper, but they've
got the best service (and longest opening
hours) in the neighborhood.
Also, their tailor Mr. Ott is good at
fitting suits and jackets.

Re: [Chat] Fwd: Fwd: Another break-in

2012-03-21 Thread Greg Alexander
It is good to remind homeowners about windows, etc., during the warmer months. My comment relates to the fact that every meeting I go to, when crime comes up, it seems like the police and others are implying that somehow the victim is at fault. At our recent meeting at the CVCBD all I heard was that our block is too dark, people leave their windows open, etc. All valid points, but at some point, law enforcement and the CVCBD must be held accountable as well. I always hear about "increased patrolling" but never see it. I work from home so believe me, I notice these things.-gregGreg AlexanderExecutive Editor, STONE HOUSE PUBLICATIONSMason-Dixon ARRIVE | I95 BUSINESS | ARRIVING

What Diana said.

Also, let's keep our eyes open for anyone prowling around and looking suspicious and call it in to 911 if you see ANYTHING SUSPICIOUS.- Forwarded Message - Thanks for sharing this with me. Yesterday there was a string of burglaries throughout the later part of the evening into the early part of the morning. CVCBD tomorrow and Friday will be flyering a few blocks as notice to residents of the recent rash of break ins as well as some helpful preventative tips. On another note, please do not take it as an “excuse” in terms of windows and doors being left un-lock. Many break ins listed on the past 3 months of crime alerts the suspect have gained entry to properties through open windows or unlocked doors. We simply like to remind residents to double check every window and door in their household especially before they leave or in the evenings before winding down. Unfortunately we see more and more of this as the
weather gets warmer. Northern District and CVCBD do offer the opportunity for residents to engrave their personal items with an engraver for a faster return of stolen items if they have been found. As well as walk throughs to suggest additional security measures in the home. Also our Wednesday NWOP walk (Neighborhood Walkers On Patrol) have been leaving additional flyers for preventative measures and notating broken street lights so we can continue to help increase safety measures here in the district. If you have additional questions or concerns please feel free to contact me directly in the office at 410-235-4411 ext 16. If an arrest is made, Deputy Major Worley will let us know.Deputy Major Worley stated at a recent meeting that year to date crime in charles village is up about 15% simply due to an increase in burglaries. Robberies and larceny from auto are both down. He stated that the crime stats are lower above 28th Street where JHU Security Patrols. He stated that he has worked on segway patrols in the past in Mt Vernon and finds them a great tool for that area and would be a great tool for Charles Village. The CVCBD proposes to raise the surtax in order to, among other things, provide an off-duty police patrol of targeted areas and is holding a public meeting to discuss the FY 2013 Budget
plan on Tuesday, March 27, 6:30 – 8:00 pm at Lovely Lane Church, 22nd and Saint Paul St. There will be a presentation of the budget and program services recommended by the CVCBDMA Board that asks for a surtax rate increase from the current 12 cents per $100 of assessed property value to 12.5 cents per $100. This equates to an approx average tax increase to residential property homeowners of approximately $5/year. To view the CVCBD's current supplemental Programs/Services, please go to http://charlesvillage.org/bylaws.html and click on Baseline Agreement with the Community 2012. This coming fiscal year, the CVCBD is looking to provide even more services/programs. Please encourage your neighbors who may not have received this announcement to attend, listen, and
voice their thoughts. The CVCBD would like a good turnout and wants to hear your thoughts. The CVCBD will be posting information with respect to the proposed plans on its website in the coming days. [Chat] Another break-in

2012-03-20 Thread Greg Alexander
Our rash of break-ins around the 2600 block of Guilford continues. Yesterday
afternoon around 3:00, someone broke into 300 E. Lorraine, the rehabbed house
that was bought a few months ago by a young woman who lives there with her son.
They broke in through the basement (like most of the other ones that occurred
on the 2600 block of Guilford) and stole a laptop, children's clothes and
attempted to steal the flat screen TV but was unable to carry it (thankfully).
She has an alarm but they got away before police arrived.

And, no, her windows were not open or any of the other excuses the Northern
Police District likes to give. Her house was secure with an alarm in broad
daylight.

[Chat] Clothes donation

2012-01-10 Thread Greg Alexander
Does anyone have any recommendations of how to donate clothes? Tried the
shelter on St Paul and they are not interested. Tried Purple Heart and they
never came today after we drug out all the boxes last night.  Called and they
said if they cannot see it from the street they don't stop.  As you all know in
Charles Village our built-up porches make it impossible to see something from
the street unless I put it on the steps where inevitably people would rummage
through it.  So need an organization that actually knows what they are doing.

Subject: [Chat] Stabbing on 3000-block of Guilford

Hello, neighbors,

There was a serious stabbing attack on our block.
The story we heard is that a man returned home to
find an intruder who attacked and stabbed him multiple
times.  Police arrived about 10 minutes after the 911
call.  I saw them wheel the man away on a stretcher.
He was conscious and lifted his head.  I could see
blood on his legs.  Somebody heard him joke that he
thinks he won't be going to work tomorrow.

Guilford at 31st is taped off as a crime scene and
the police just asked everyone to go inside.
Nobody we talked to saw the attacker.

We have a friend who moved next door just a week
ago.  She came to Charles Village to find a safer
neighborhood.  What a welcome.

Thought I'd share this article on Stokes' recent odd comments.  Seems like he's

[Chat] Police frustration

2011-05-25 Thread Greg Alexander
OK, just had a scare and frustrating experience with the police.  While
relaxing on our back porch saw a guy climbing our back fence.  I yelled at him
and he said he was there to get his dope.  He apologized  and said he'd never
come back.  He grabbed his bag and left quietly.  I went out there and found
another bag of pot.  Called the police.  Guy returned, tried to scale our fence
looking for what he left behind.  Paul yelled at him and he asked to speak to
Paul, who obviously refused.  Called 911 again.  Cops finally came 20 min.
later.  Officer could care less.  Gave him the pot, he took my name and DOB.  I
asked if he wanted to see the back and told him that the druggie was here 5
minutes ago and he could care less and left.  Extremely rude and uncaring.

If anyone has the name of the No. District contact, please forward.  This is
unacceptable.

 A little before 6 p.m. this evening,
my doorbell rang.  I opened the inner door but not the
outer security door which can only be opened with a
key.  On my porch were a couple, a black male and a
white female, college age or more likely a little bit
older.  They said that they had the wrong person.

A few minutes later, I opened the inner door again.
The couple were still there, and the man asked me to open
the outer security door.  I refused.  He then
tried to sell me on saving money by switching to a
guaranteed fixed electric rate instead of paying BGE.
I told him that I was not interested, even though he
persisted until I ended the conversation.  He was
carrying a notebook.  The woman basically was silent.

Something did not add up.  How can they have the wrong
person and then try to sell me something?  And why were
they still there?  Anyway, I reported it to 911, to a
JHU cop who was parked across the street a few minutes
later, and to Northern District police who came moments
later in response to my 911 call.  They said that
they would be looking for the couple.  I do not know
whether, if I had opened my security door, the couple would
have rushed in to grab something in my house or worse.
I have seen a report that in a nearby neighborhood, people
have rung doorbells and asked for someone who does not exist
on that block.  When they have found a house where
nobody is home, they have broken in.

I write all this to urge that everyone be very careful
about opening a door to a stranger.  And if things
really do not add up but look suspicious, call 911.
What I encountered this evening may be legitimate, but my
guess is that it is not.  And if it is part of a knock,
run in and grab something, and run scheme or some other
scheme, the police will definitely appreciate your giving
them a heads up on what is happening.  After all, the
cops cannot be everywhere, so we have to be additional eyes
 and ears for them.

Northern District does an excellent job, but we need to
give them all the help we can.

 Steve

[Chat] Appliance repair

2011-03-02 Thread Greg Alexander
We have a very old refrigerator and recently bought an automatic ice maker for
it (from an appliance store in Pennsylvania who specializes in Amana and had
the part to fit our model number). A water line was already hooked up for it,
so we suppose the previous owners of our house took it with them for some
reason. Problem is (we think) is that the water regulator is malfunctioning as
it brings in water but won't stop (we since shut off the water line to prevent
a flooding).

We need an appliance repair person. Does anyone know of a good one?

Thanks,
Greg

SunPlus is supposed to be delivered to non-subscribers only. This way, they
can offer TMC (Total Market Coverage) to advertisers, especially grocery
stores. Hence, run your circular in the Sun and SunPlus and you get

We still get ours even though we
cancelled our Sun subscription months ago.  I think
that the Sun makes money off of it by telling advertisers
Sun Plus has X many subscribers so it's not exactly in
their interest to cancel these deliveries.

[Chat] CV Retail

2010-06-18 Thread Greg Alexander
So despite Ledo's having an awning over the entire former Rocky Run space, I
noticed for the first time today that there are retail for lease signs
plastered on all the windows and door for the left half of the space - are they
sub-leasing this space?

Also, had a haircut at the new hair place, Moxie. Second time there; two bad
haircuts and the inability to take you on time despite an appointment.
Terrible.

Also, why is it so hard to find a place to grab a late brunch/early lunch in CV
on Sundays? Paul and I walked for 30 minutes on Sunday around 1: Terra Cafe
opens at 3 for some reason, MJs Soul Food is closed, Wyman Park restaurant is
closed, iBar opens at 5 and Pete's closes at 1. We finally ended up driving to
The Dizz in Remington, despite just being there the night before. What's up
with all these places being closed on Sundays? Are we in Alabama? I left the
South 13 years ago for many reasons, one of which being having religion mandate
business hours. Give me a break.

Giant is so overpriced. I actually shop at Safeway as its Club Card is by far
the best. I've shopped around and I save the most there by a long shot.

I know about giant.  I shop
there as little as possible. I find their sales insulting. I
like the sales at Super Fresh, even tho their prices r
higher. The sales make up for the higher prices.
Last week Thomas's bagels were 1.99.

  Judy,

If you believe that we should not shop at foreign

Giant was founded by a kosher butcher named Isidore
Cohen who lived somewhere in the DC/Baltimore area, but
before he died, he sold Giant to Royal Ahold which is a
Dutch Company.  After that, in my opinion, Giant went
downhill.  I have been told that Stop Shop, a
chain in Massachusetts also acquired by Royal Ahold and now
part of the same division of Royal Ahold as Giant, has also
gone downhill in quality of service to customers.

A few years ago, Royal Ahold was caught cooking its
books i.e. pretending to be more profitable than it
was.  That involved stores in South America, not in the
 U.S.

Personally, I will continue to shop at Giant for the
things that I cannot readily get at the farmers'
market.  But I tend to buy a lot at Whole Foods
(expensive often, I know, but worth it to me for the quality
and for products that cannot be found at Giant or Eddie's,
and Whole Foods is an American company), and I often go 3
blocks to Eddie's rather than 6 blocks to Giant.

Safeway pulled completely out of Baltimore City some
years ago, then moved back into the City when it opened its
store in Charles Village.  My impression is that its
prices are higher than those at Giant.  As much as I
hate Walmart, I expect it to have a good effect on prices at
Safeway.  Giant reportedly lowered its prices because
too many of its customers were driving to a Walmart.

  Hello, all,
Being a chain of German supermarkets implies
foreign ownership. No offense to Aldi, I'm sure they are as
good as people say they are, but i think I'll stay with
American owned Markets ande keep my money stateside.

Aldi is a chain of German supermarkets that
 several years
ago opened here.  We'd never been in one
 until Kathleen
went to the Aldi in Highlandtown.  I
 heard that they are owned
by the same family that owns Trader
 Joe's.  Aldi has
an everyday low price scheme, without a lot
 of sales
and promotions.  Some examples (not on
 sale):

2 lbs long grain brown rice  $1.29
  cone coffee filters #4
 size   $1.59
  German pumpernickel bread $1.49
  tub of butter substitute $0.99
  bran flakes $1.49

I think it's worth going back if you're down
 that way.

OK. I just talked to one of my friends who lives at 2602 N. Calvert and she
said that the shooting happened in the back alley behind their house and didn't
involve them. Police suspect it was drug related. One of her housemates had
just walked in from the back alley and had seen 2 men with hoods and then as
she went inside she heard shots and went back outside and one of the men was
dead. She spent hours with the police telling them what she saw and heard. She
is freaked out, but the rest of them are doing alright.

was able to ID the house and the police are going to talk to the owner now.
Baltimore City Animal Control has also been in touch thanks to the Animal

I think Vaughn Greene (several locales in Balt) is a good choice. I don't know

 Hello all-

Carolyn Goodwin is our cleans our house for us and I know
does other homes in CV.  Her father passed away
yesterday and she asked me if I knew of any reasonably
priced Baltimore funeral homes.  I don't, but I thought
maybe someone on this list might.  Anyone who does,
 please let me know.  Thanks.

we'll sign it for you. Since I am not a morning person, look for the guy with

Affordable rates for both pet sitting and dog walking, and I will service
households in Charles Village, Hampden, Oakenshawe, Remington and Wyman Park.

[Chat] Beware dog owners or walkers in general

2009-05-03 Thread Greg Alexander

As I was walking my dog tonight at 27th and Guilford, I encountered a lady with
two medium-sized dogs. As I crossed their path, one of her dogs (it was a
black mid-sized dog) chased after my elderly greyhound, who fell in the street
and hurt his hip again (he's still limping hours later). This is not the first
time we've encountered this unfriendly and irresponsible dog owner, who
shrugged off my complaint to her to please control her dogs. I reminded her
that she needs to have her dogs on a leash (she puts them on leash only when
encountering other dogs).

I'm not sure if her aggressive dog is only so with dogs or also with humans,
but be careful out there if you see her.

[Chat] 28th and Calvert

2009-04-29 Thread Greg Alexander

Just now while walking my dog, I saw about six cop cars and an ambulance at the
northwest corner of 28th and Calvert (I guess that would be 2802 Calvert?).
There seemed to be about six uniformed cops on the porch. Anyone hear anything?

I find that hard to believe. The majority of our items were from $0.25 to $1,

reported that they sold almost everything, I'd say you were in the minority.
Also, it was a great community building exercise for our block and all unsold

Re: [Chat] 2600 Block Guilford Sidewalk Sale

2009-04-26 Thread Greg Alexander

Jusy,

Glad to hear it about the positive interaction. I was not trying to equate the
two variables; rather, stating that we had a good time and it was a good
exercise for us, especially considering that those of us in lower CV receive
little support and feel on our own most times, so we must band together. BTW,
men's clothes were a small fraction of the items. I sold Fiestaware dishes,
for example, for $0.25/each that retail for $9 for a small plate online today.

[Chat] Donating goods

2009-04-23 Thread Greg Alexander

Our block (2600 Guilford) is having a block yard sale this Saturday,
8:30-12:30. Our block leader came up with the idea to have everyone donate
some of the unsold goods from the sale to a local non-profit. We would
designate one home to consolidate all the household goods, furniture, etc.
Does anyone know of a non-profit that we can call to arrange for a Monday
pick-up?

[Chat] CV Book Launch Party at Village Learning Place, March 14

2009-03-10 Thread Greg Alexander

Paul and I are pleased to invite everyone to the Book Launch Party at Village
Learning Place, 2521 St. Paul Street, on Saturday, March 14 at 2 p.m. for our
book A Brief History of Charles Village. The 128-page book explores Charles
Village's transformation from its inception as a country retreat for downtown
residents to a diverse neighborhood today composed of longtime residents,
recent transplants, apartment renters and university students.

Paul and I will be providing wine, soft drinks and will have some snacks on
hand, too. We will also be selling signed copies of the book ($21.99 for the
book, as well as a special CV gift set for $25). We'll accept cash, checks as
well as credit/debit cards.

While Barnes and Noble, as well as Greetings and Readings, are having book
signings later this month, we wanted to launch the book at a local institution
such as the Village Learning Place. The publisher has also generously agreed to
make a contribution to the Village Learning Place.

Hope to see you there!

Hey, did anyone hear about Miss Sue's getting robbed
yesterday? (27th and Guilford) I heard that they
did...but haven't been over to ask. Apparently there
was quite a scene of police cars, detectives and a
helicopter patting people down and scouring the area.

Yes, Susie's fine. The door now has a buzzer.

I asked her if the thief was from the neighborhood; she

Re: [Chat] Just some thoughts

2008-11-21 Thread Greg Alexander
Sonja,

I love the sweeping idea and Front Porch Fridays. My partner meets with police
regularly in DC with his job and having eyes on the street is the No. 1 thing
the police recommend to fight crime. As you say, if there are people outside
(especially in cold weather), crooks will go elsewhere. We have been sitting
outside more and more on our front porch on Fri and Sat nights (with a bottle
of wine) to keep an eye on neighbors. I hate cold weather, but I can put on a
bulky jacket, right?

Great ideas - keep them coming and let's take back our neighborhood!

 Hi again,

I was up a lot last night thinking about some things we
could do to really send a message that this is a
neighborhood that is extremely community oriented and more
importantly, watchful. I am certain that this string of
crimes has come after a lot of observation. If criminals
know that there are too many people milling around, they
wont commit crimes here, period. To that end, I've
come up with three suggestions that I hope will encourage us
to be more proactive and give us something concrete we can
do to immediately make a difference. The first is pretty
straight forward. Here is a link to some very inexpensive
 signage (between $10 - $20) on eBay:
 http://shop.ebay.com/?_from=R40_trksid=m38.l1313_nkw=neighborhood+watch+signs_sacat=See-All-Categories
I am purchasing at least one for my back garage/fence and
perhaps another for the front. Having a simple sign that
reads, NEIGHBORHOOD WATCH AREA is one of the
simplest ways to do something now. Police studies
consistently show that crime is decreased in Watch areas.
Whether we actually do set up an official neighborhood watch
program or not, the signs will at the very least give a
 criminal pause.

My second suggestion came about 3am...so bear with me!
How about we start a clean sweep program? Yes,
I'm actually suggesting fighting crime with a broom!
How can one do this, pray tell? Well...first we establish
 a standard schedule. Monday -8am Tues-9am, Wed 10am,
Thursday 3pm Friday 4pm. Okay...so everyone who is
available on those days...those times...takes to the steps
and...er...sweeps! Hear me out! What we need more than
anything is a neighborhood with lots of visible NEIGHBORS!
Criminals will NOT stop and carjack/rob/assault when there
are lots of people on the street. We can't be parked
outside our homes all day, but we can do what we can,
right? Besides, it could be a lot of fun in an old school,
throw back sort of way. It's 9am...you head out
front...turn to your neighbor, give a wave and start your
day...not bad. There are many things we can do out
front...sweep the stairs, sweep our dusty porches...clean
 those
doors...whatever. The point is to make it a regular
thing and our grandmother's would be proud. Will you
join me for the Clean Sweep challenge?
Weekends aren't a biggie. These criminals like the
weekdays. For those of us that work 9-5...I didn't
leave you out! This brings me to my third suggestion:
Charles Village, FRONT PORCH FRIDAYS! I thought about
suggesting this closer to the Spring, but heck...why not?
Basically the idea would be that on Friday's anytime
between say, 6pm-8, we (this time of year) bundle
up...take our cup of coffee/cocoa and adjourn to the front
porch. I live on the 2700 block of Guilford...maybe
perhaps we invite our neighbors on the 2600 and 2800 blocks
to walk over and visit. That's the idea. Then the
next week...maybe we take a walk and visit someone else.
It could be a fun way to get to know everyone and the
presence of people on the street would be terrific for
 crime-fighting...So there it
is...broom combat and porch hopping...Are we interested in
trying them out? Tomorrow is Friday...and I can sweep at
4...hope you'll join me or you can just drive by and
laugh:) Either way, we're out there and doing
 something. Thanks for your time,
 Sonja Kinzer

The fact that you were observant of your surroundings while
 you were moving
may have also acted as a deterrent. I have often heard the
 police say that the
criminal will only go after the easy mark, i.e., someone
 who is not paying
attention and who they can catch off guard. You have
 demonstrated a good
 example for all your neighbors.

The only other thing you could have done that would have
 been helpful would
be to get the license plate number of the suspicious
 vehicle and call 911 to
report the incident. Officers on duty would pick up that
 911 call which might
constitute probable cause for them to stop the vehicle for
 questioning. That
would send a signal to the criminals that we have a tight
 network in Charles
Village and that the chances of getting caught are too
risky to continue it as a
 target area for them.

I am passing this information on to David Hill at CVCBD at
 410-235-4411 so
that their safety patrols can contact Northern District
 police to alert them and
to look out for the vehicle you have described. That is
 something you can
also do in the future after calling 911.

  Good morning everyone,

 Because of everything going on
in the area I scanned before parking...trying to be
 cautious because I'm
often slow getting in the house because I have to get
my 8 month old out of her
car seat. There wasn't anyone on the street
 except on of our neighbors
leaving. So as I'm getting out of my car, I
notice a red/burgandy car coming from
Whitridge and turning right, stopping at the light on
 28th and Guilford. To
my surprise, the car, full of men then put their car
 in reverse. ( I am
already on the other side, getting ready to get my
baby out of her seat). They
went in reverse all the way to Whitridge and then
 turned toward me, slowing
down. It was very intentional and then they covered
 their faces and sped off.
I don't know if they had mal intent or what, but
I thought I'd pass it on
for whatever it's worth. My gut feeling was that
 they were doing this because
they either saw me or my neighbor. I think when they
 realized there was
more than one person on the street, they took off.
 The fact that they were
covering their faces before they left tells me they
weren't up to any good. The
car was a four door, red/burgandy smll sedan. There
were 5 men in the car, a
  couple with baseball caps...

That is truly an uncool thing that happened.
As stated before, you should try to contact the day/main
manager or perhaps the district manager and district head
 quarters.

On the occasions when My family orders pizza we usually use
Domino's since we can track them online. Or we go to the
Family run Pizza place near the corner of St. Pauls and
25th street. (of course where we order from is strickly
decided by what coupons we have at the time)

We have learned over the years when we want pizza, to order
it about 45min to an hour before actual eating time. And
during Football , Baseball and Hockey game nights... we
just pop in the red baron into the oven and dont even bother
 with ordering or take out.

My fiancée Janet and I ordered a pizza to be delivered
 from the Papa
Johns on 33rd St. It took over an hour to arrive (when we
 called to ask
where our pizza was, they said it was on its way and was
 late because
they were really busy on the night of a football game).
 Finally, it did
arrive, and a slice was missing. It looked as though
 someone had eaten
a slice of our pizza. Also, one slice was upside down on
 top of the
 other slices.

It was really creepy, and we threw out the pizza. Janet
 called, and
first was on hold until she gave up. She called again a
 few minutes
later, and spoke to the manager. He was apologetic and
 offered to send
another pizza, but at that point we had no appetite for
 pizza.

In fact, if we had known how long it would take for the
 pizza to arrive,
we would have cooked something ourselves, but we had
 decided that that
would take too long. It would have been faster.

And as much as we would like to support a local business,
 Papa Johns
will no longer get our business. In an era when some food
 is tainted, I
do not want to wonder whether the food I get is safe to
 eat.

 Steve.

[Chat] 2625 Guilford

2008-05-29 Thread Greg Alexander
Great news! Renovation has begun at 2625 Guilford! The house was purchased by
St. Ambrose from the City and has been abandoned for 10 years and has always
been the eye-sore of the block, not to mention a common place for people to
dump trash and for juveniles to hang out and smoke pot. They have already
made tremendous progress (I peaked in a window). And, with the recent
renovation next door at 2623 (which really needed it) this is very exciting
news in what has been a rough spring with all the crime on our block and
surrounding blocks.

See ya'll at the Festival!

 Hello!

I'm selling several small to medium size items on eBay
this week, and Greg and I have exhausted our supply of
boxes!? If you have any good boxes lying around that you
would like to get rid of, let me know! ? I'll gladly
pick them up evenings this week.?

[Chat] Crime wave continues in lower CV

2008-04-26 Thread Greg Alexander
For the second time in three weeks, we just heard 5-6 gunshots within a block
of our house on Guilford (at 9 p.m. on a gorgeous evening). About seven cop
cars responded, which is good. Meanwhile, the house at 2622 Guilford has become
a full-time drug house with a constant stream of cars coming to the house,
double parking and going in for drugs as I smell the daily smell of marijuana
smoke as I walk the dog. Also, a group of four 12-year-olds harassed me as I
walked the dog, one of them carrying a metal baton (I later saw him duck in the
bushes, undoubtedly to assault a future passer-by). I call the cops but nothing
happens.

Ahhh, life in the Village. Isn't it grand?!

[Chat] Rental house in CV

2008-04-15 Thread Greg Alexander
Our housesitter/petsitter is looking to move to Charles Village (she has fallen
in love with CV
after housitting for us several times). She just graduated from Loyola and she
and three other
friends are looking to rent in CV. They need three bedrooms (one is a couple)
and are looking to
move in July. Their budget is $1,500/month. I told her I'd look out for her in
the neighborhood
but thought I'd ask around for her to see if anyone knew of any rentals coming
open this summer.

Thanks,
Greg

[Chat] Power company rep

2008-04-15 Thread Greg Alexander
Has anyone else had a guy come around today in a yellow embroided company shirt
saying he was with
the company who supplies power to BGE? I cannot remember the name of the
company he said he was
with (I'm on Claritin for allergies and out of it). He said I may be eligible
for an eight
percent discount off my bill and he needed to see a copy of my latest BGE bill.
 I told him that
we opted out of all paper bills and pay online and he said OK and walked off.
Kind of weird...

Thanks, Rob. He seemed like he was on the up and up (not a scammer) but I was
still not
interested. Thanks for the info!

They're a wholesaler. Their whole schtick is to sell you a electricity
package that's more analogous to a fixed rate with overages cell phone
plan than a pay-as-you-use like your current BGE service. They come out
because under deregulation, if you buy their package they can force BGE
to buy a bigger share of their wholesale power generation.

Not to be overly cynical, but I assume these guys have done a ton more
math than the average consumer and you're not likely to actually turn
any savings in the end on the complicated plans they sell no matter
 what you pick.

[Chat] Incident on Guilford Avenue

2008-03-31 Thread Greg Alexander
Just a reminder of the threat of violence here in CV. My neighbor here in the
2600 block of
Guilford Avenue just informed me that a renter on our block was held up at
gunpoint at 2 a.m. this
morning as he was unloading his car. Two African-American males held a gun to
his face and
demanded his cash. Luckily they did not take his car or harm him in any way.

Be careful out there!

Thanks, Steve. Elizabeth Large included it in her Best of 2007 article today
in The Sun and
applauded the owner for opening it where he did.

--- Stephen J Gewirtz [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote:

My girlfriend Janet and I just had the weekend brunch at Darker Than
Blue Cafe on the west side of the 3000 block of Greenmount Avenue
(between Vineyard Lane and E. 31st). We thoroughly enjoyed the meal.

When we came in, we were asked if we wanted omelets; the omelets were
excellent. Also available in unlimited quantity from the buffet were
fried and barbecued chicken, pepper steak, rice, corn, grits, French
toast, pancakes, and a lot of other goodies. We enjoyed everything we
 tried.

The meal was $18 for each of us, plus tax and tip. For what we got, it
 was a very good value.

We also looked at the lunch and dinner menus, and both appeared to be
 very good.

In short, we have a great asset in our community. We need to support it.

It is unfortunate that there are check cashing establishments and other
businesses nearby that do not add to the ambiance of the neighborhood.
But that will not change unless it becomes clear that the really good
businesses that we want in our neighborhood can thrive.

 Steve.

[Chat] Books for kids

2007-04-04 Thread Greg Alexander
CV neighbors,

Full disclosure: I am a fan of the Oprah show and TiVo it every day.
Yesterday's show was about
this former Microsoft senior executive making millions and millions of dollars
each year, who one
year visited Nepal and learned that there were kids in Nepal - and all over the
world - who were
dying to learn and read but simply had no books (they fought over Dr. Seuss'
books when he brought
them). He quit his job and founded a nonprofit to deliver books and to build
libraries and
schools all over the world. So far, he has collected 3 million books, started
287 schools,
established 3,600 libraries and funded more than 2,000 long-term scholarships
for girls in
third-world countries. His big thing is that there are 770 million illiterate
adults in the
world, two-thirds of whom are women and girls, so the circle will continue as
illiterate women are
unable to teach their children.

He and Oprah have partnered where $1 donation buys a book. As a bibliophile,
the show spoke to
me. I made a donation to his charity (Room to Read). A friend of mine
contacted me about the
show. She lives in Barre Circle (near Camden Yards). She started a localized
version of this
idea months ago as her neighbor is a City schoolteacher in a low-income
neighborhood. She and I
meeting this week to discuss growing her grassroots program, as the show spoke
to her, too. Of
course, I want my efforts to support CV-area schools. Does anyone have any
insight on how to do
this at Margaret Brent and Barclay? Shall I contact the VLP?

Any information would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
Greg

It's great that Two Sisters has great food. However, we tried to go there
twice now and they are
always closed. We tried Sunday lunch and Thursday dinner, and, although their
hours say that they
are open, we have struck out.

[Chat] Crime update

2007-01-10 Thread Greg Alexander
I wanted to share a couple of incidents that have occurred here in the 2600
block of Guilford, as
I feel the more we all know what's going on with each other's areas, a stronger
community we can
be. So, what that in mind:

My neighbor's house was broken into on New Year's Eve around 6 p.m. He was
home and found someone
in his office who stole his cell phone. He struggled with the man but he got
away. No weapon on
him and my neighbor said the guy smelled like alcohol.

Also, last night, some neighborhood kids (3-4 of them, mid teens) shot a BB gun
at my partner and
I on our back porch (which is luckily screened). We called the police but not
sure what - if
anything - happened.

[Chat] Jones Fall Sewer project

2006-12-06 Thread Greg Alexander
So, is anyone else going crazy with this sewer project? It goes down 27th
Street and this week
they are tearing up 27th at Guilford by my house. It's absolutely horrible! I
work from home and
at several times during the day, the whole house shakes. We were given no
notice about this by
the city (only those located within 100 feet of 27th Street were according to
the Peabody Heights
Assoc.), and luckily we were both home when they started yesterday, as when
they are drilling, the
house shakes and things started to fall off walls and move on shelves, some of
which were family
antiques. Luckily we were home so that we could grab these things and put them
away. Not to
mention that the shaking of the house will cause damage to the foundation, I'm
sure. I see that
the Community Law Center has offered to help but I wonder if our being more
than 100 feet away
(just barely) matters.

Is there anything about Sam's Belly in your compiling of neighborhood
history. This was a cooperative food store located on 31st, maybe where
Normal's is now? It was a wonderful place to get fresh produce and
 especially grains and granolas.

Also does anyone remember the pickup games - softball and football staged
by the New Democratic club members. They were coed with Joe Clark (Mary
Pat's husband), Frank Heinz, and many others participating. The pick up
games were at the Hopkins campus in front of the Wyman Park Hospital area
which was soon (10 years later) to be paved over into a parking lot and they
are still building away. At the end of the sports era, most of the
politicos were gone and another group continued to play ball. There was a
time when Johnny Unitas, having retired from the Colts scrimaged with the
group. I guess he was just looking for something to do, especially if it
involved a football. He also played a few games of softball in which he
witness my last game. After a long run I caught up to the ball but put my
hand into the glove prematurely, thus a broken finger. The appearances by
Johnny U. are hard to believe for some people but I will swear to the fact.
Maybe someone else remembers them too.

Re: [Chat] Attempted break in

2006-10-13 Thread Greg Alexander
I'm sorry to hear that Kathleen. I know that is quite scary. We got a call on
at 9 on Saturday
night from our alarm company (we were at PJs enjoying a pizza and beer) that
our alarm was going
off. My partner and a friend came home to check on it as we assumed that it
was a false alarm.
No, in fact, as someone threw a rock through the front window breaking the
storm and main window
(luckily we have glass break sensors on the windows). The cops were great
(they actually got here
the same time as Paul who was only seven blocks away). They searched the
entire house but they
believe that it was probably just vandalism as it would not make sense for a
break-in attempt to
break a front window at 9 on a Saturday and only use a small rock. I did not
sleep on Saturday
but have adjusted now. It has been more of an inconvenience that anything else
having to replace
the glass in both windows.

Stay safe!

We chalked it up to noise from next door or out in the alley.

The next day when I pulled up the blinds in the bedroom, a small
flower pot on our outside bedroom windowsill had been moved.
Then I noticed that the screen was pushed up and a plastic
chair on the balcony was moved to be in front of the window
(so someone could stand on it presumably). We did call 311
and they send a couple of officers to come and look. They
were very nice but didn't take a report. They said they'd
make a note to put our house on some sort of special watch
list for a couple of nights.

We don't have stairs from our back 1st floor deck to the second
floor one but the house next door is 3 apartment so they have
connecting steps (required by fire law to have a back exit from every
apartment). I assume the person came up there stairs and climbed
over the rail separating our two decks but was then scared
away when Emil called to me. Very scary. So, be aware and watchful.

2006-10-12 Thread Greg Alexander
Excellent! Thanks!

The Trinidad Gourmet just opened today at 418 E. 31st St., where Nancy
Smith's antique shop was. It is a carryout shop, but it has a small
area where you can eat if you choose to. I walked past it about 9 a.m.
and saw that a sign said Open.

Since I love Caribbean food and especially goat meat, I went there for
lunch. I took home their curried goat and a bottle of ginger beer
(total cost including tax: $9.98; there is no jar for tips, so that was
 the total cost).

The curried goat comes wrapped in a type of bread (thicker, larger and
fluffier than a tortilla), and it comes with chick peas. I am happy to
report that I found it very tasty. It had a mild curry.

Their menu lists quite a variety of foods including chicken, beef, goat,
fish, shrimp and vegetables. They are open for breakfast (and I am not
at all familiar with their breakfast dishes, but look forward to trying
them). Their hours are not yet posted, but the menu refers to
 breakfast, lunch and dinner.

The food, like much of Caribbean food, can be described as Indian with a
 Caribbean accent.

The portion of goat curry was large, so if I want to lose weight, I
cannot eat there too often. One reason I eat in as much as I do is that
I can control how much I eat that way.

To sum up, we have an excellent new eatery in the neighborhood. Let's
 support it.

 Steve.
