I got this message from our friends next door. Regina Note: forwarded message attached. - Building a website is a piece of cake. Yahoo! Small Business gives you all the tools to get online.---BeginMessage--- Just wanted you to pass the word on to everyone in the house. A young girl (early 20s) was riding her bike on the side walk across the street from the Schnapp Shop when a group of young boys (9-12 year olds) punched her in the face. This was last Friday. Then today we ran into Rory and JW (they live on the corner of 28th and Calvert St) - they informed us yesterday at 10:50PM right next to Matt and Jules (the house with the large elevated back deck right behind you) house on St. Paul their neighbor was assaulted by a group of young men aged 16-18 no reason. He was working on his front yard when they approached him. Please be careful - it appears that the gang initiation has started for both the young and older groups of boys in the neighborhood. Also time of day does not appear to be only during the night or evening for these assaults - several people have reported being harassed early in the morning on the way to their parked cars to go to work. Also it is not only females with this most lastest attack on St. Paul. The nice man at the Schnapp Shop that the police had informed him to tell everyone to be aware of their surrounds and not to walk alone (male or female) or with headphones on. Oh, what a lovely hot summer - I can't wait for a good cold winter. Sorry for the downer news but just want to keep you informed and aware - better to be safe than sorry. Re: [Chat] Fwd: hood thugs
these kids have been ar'd a long time. the older ones get to be teenagers and then their brother's moved up the obnoxious ladder. what time friday. it is recommended that people in trouble scream FIRE. it gets more attention. With the older ones, sometimes i look at them and just say hi. with the young ones, bluff them, tell them you work with their mother. she will be pissed. if they give you the third degree don't answer. i'v never had to use it but i would if i had to. of course my dogs are always with me. judy On Jul 17, 2007, at 2:14 PM, regina ARMENTA wrote: I got this message from our friends next door. Re: [Chat] Fwd: hood thugs
I'm sorry to hear about the recent assaults but also quite sorry that the police are giving people such advice as not to walk alone! Are citizens all supposed to stay cowering inside their homes or offices and to desert our sidewalks and yards, leaving them only to thugs? How does an empty community make life better for anyone? Better advice would be for all of us to come outside our houses, sit on our porches, walk in the neighborhood, be a presence, get to know our neighbors, and watch out for one another. I agree! I love living here and the greatest part about it, is that we can walk around. I saw these kids that day walking on both side of the street on 27th Calvert. I would say about 15 or 20 of them. They were loud enough for me to stop and look out the window. I guess when this beating happen there were people at the bus stop and did nothing. Two friends of ours came out with their dog and tried to scare them away. I feel scared, but I don't want to stay in the house. Maybe a block party/meeting so we could get to know each other. I just moved in the area in Nov. I know my neighbors next door and behind and a few here and there. I would love to be more connected. I thought there was a message posted here a few weeks ago-I believe it was from a police person. The message was to contact the police whenever a large group of youth is wandering through the neighborhood, the implication being-or perhaps stated-that such groups are usually not up to any good. Does anyone else remember such a message here? Re: [Chat] Fwd: hood thugs
Christine, Here is what was posted on the discussion list on 6/18 (None of it was from a police person): Christine, It they are carrying a baseball bat but no baseball gloves, then it probably would be worth a call to 911. At least the police can talk to them and will know who they are. If you have not done so already, get a crime watch number. Then, when you call 911, to identify yourself you simply give your crime watch number, and the officer who responds will not have your name and address. The following is from the Northern District web site: *How do I get a Crime Watch Number?* To get a Crime Watch number contact the Community Relations Unit at the Northern District at 410-367-8491. You should receive your number in the mail in about a week. Steve. Christine Gray wrote: Steve, That's the second violent incident/crime in that area in two weeks or less. When I work on the computer in my second-floor front, I often see groups of five to eight boys, 10 to 16 years old, wandering my block at night. Is that cause for concern? Christine -Original Message- From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] On Behalf Of Rob Carlson Sent: Monday, June 18, 2007 12:01 AM To: chat@charlesvillage.info Subject: [Chat] Gang robbery in front of Margaret Brent/2640 Sunday night Tonight at 9:45pm a gang of 12 teenagers beat and robbed a man in front of Margaret Brent Elementary school for his cell phone. The kids were searching for someone to rob in front of the side entrance of 2640 on 27th Street but gave up and moved down St. Paul because I kept circling the block and following them with my headlights to make sure the group meeting in the church would be safe coming out. Ten of them were on foot and two were on bikes. The officer on the scene told me that the man was beaten with a baseball bat one carried. If you see anything like this group, call it in immediately to 911. -- Rob Carlson [EMAIL PROTECTED] http://vees.net/ I do not know if there was any more said about whether to call 911. But if kids appear to be up to no good and if the police arrive as the kids are assaulting someone, you will have helped the police to stop a crime in progress. We have a serious crime problem in Charles Village; we can see whether Thursday's meeting sponsored by CVCBD and JHU will do any good. And I will repeat my advice that everyone get a crime watch number. I would guess that forms for getting a crime watch number will be available at the meeting. And you can ask when seeing a large group of kids justifies calling 911. Steve. here is a meeting we are having soon.. Also, I remember a chat message about becoming a registered crime spotter, someone is sending this again. CVCBD and JHU are sponsoring a safety seminar Thursday, July 19 from 7 to 9 p.m. at University Baptist Church, 3501 N. Charles. Refreshments are promised. For more info, call Katie Beltz at 410-235=4411 x 16. Attending will be representatives of the police, the city council, community organizations and more. It will be a community discussion of steps to be taken against crime and violence in our neighborhoods. I can forward the original email that I received from Katie Beltz, but it is too big to put on the discussion and chat lists. However, you have all the information above. I notice that this meeting comes just 2 weeks after the attempted abduction of a JHU grad student from Wyman Park Drive and Art Museum Drive. Unfortunately, we have a serious crime problem here in Charles Village.
