[CITTERN] Re: Photographs

2008-01-15 Thread Kevin Lawton
That thing looks very much like an English Gittar to me !
I was wondering - with instruments like this which use a Preston-style 'watch
key' tuning mechanism: getting hold of ready ready-made double-loop-ended
strings of the right length is not exactly easy unless you are very fortunate.
Is there any simple way anyone knows of for putting the loop ends onto the
strings yourself ?

Sure, but the general construction appears similar.
Anyway, the question about the string ends still stands.

but it has 12 strings and it looks like a four-course instrument.

These gears are made in Portugal and Brazil of varying quality the
best are as good as geared tuners I find and are turned with the
fingers not a watch key.. You use a special string winder with a
crank and a hook that makes a loop for the watch key tuning
mechanism: it takes a while to learn how to measure the string for
the loop; the strings for these usually come with a machine made
loop on one end.you attach it with the ready made loop behind the
bridge stretch it flat across the bridge and neck and measure where
the string will be bent for the hook on the loop winder, The hook
for the tuners is usually kept an 1/8 of an inch or less from the
nut to compensate. Too much slack when bending the string for the
loop turner and the string won't tune up too little and it won't
reach the tuning mechanism hook, it takes a practiced eye; The
address for the maker of the guitarra is a central Lisbon location.
