Do know anything about the Lenovo Thinkpad T40S. Are they good for a laptop? the age of this machine? Is it a 64 bit? I've never tried crunchbang in a dual boot set up. I wonder how well it plays with windows, especially with an EFI drive. I can tell you Ubuntu works well with Windows 7. In theory, crunchbang should work fine. If I were in your shoes I'd do the following: 1) Clean install windows 7. Allow windows to partition the drive the way it wants. This usually means 3 partitions, including a 300MB boot partition and a 20 GB or so recovery partition in addition to the main. 2)Shrink main windows partition (not the boot or recovery) from within windows. 3)make windows recovery CD (just in case) 3)Install Crunchbang on free space. Allow Crunchbang to auto partition the drive (making sure not to touch the windows stuff). Don't do manual partitioning here. You shouldn't really need to do anything else. Good luck. Not sure why because I am not sure when it happened. I did try to set-up a shared partition between the two with the hope of using the same Thunderbird (and others) profile information from both. I think I also set-up the partitions as fairly minimal at first (i.e. 100 GB or so) then when re -did it split things a bit more equitably based on my usage...so about 250 GB for Windows the rest Linux. I am looking to re-install things on the laptop but this time I will likely make a full Linux partition likely with Windows 7 as a virtual machine. Re: [clug-talk] Distro choice, besides *buntu?
Fedora, Cent, RHEL, *Ubuntu, possibly Mandriva (never personally tried it), and not in that order (I am pretty much a Ubuntu and Debian guy 100% of the time now, with the exception of OpenWRT that I put on my NSLU2s, my routers run voyage linux a Debian derivative). How do these distros work as far as compiling packages. I'm just wondering incase I need to install a package in the future that isn't in the repository? ___ clug-talk mailing list clug-talk@clug.ca http://clug.ca/mailman/listinfo/clug-talk_clug.ca Mailing List Guidelines (http://clug.ca/ml_guidelines.php) **Please remove these lines when replying
[clug-talk] Question about programs for IPtables
I want to use a program as a firewall for Iptables. Is it OK to run a program as a GUI as root to do this, or would there be problems with this? I was using Guarddog to do this as a normal user and it gave me this message: Since you do not have superuser privileges, Guarddog is running with reduced functionality. Firewall scripts may be Imported/Exported, but the system's firewall settings may not be changed.Since you do not have superuser privileges, Guarddog is running with reduced functionality. Firewall scripts may be Imported/Exported, but the system's firewall settings may not be changed. Some other ones I was looking at are fwbuilder, firehol. Are these better choices? [clug-talk] Faxing
I would appreciate advice on sending faxes. Can you recommend devices(models) for sending faxes: fax machine or modem? Which is a good way to go. I want to use this with Linux. Can I get a fax machine that I can load a file into to send? Thanks. ___ clug-talk mailing list clug-talk@clug.ca http://clug.ca/mailman/listinfo/clug-talk_clug.ca Mailing List Guidelines (http://clug.ca/ml_guidelines.php) **Please remove these lines when replying
Re: [clug-talk] IPCop
On June 12, 2009 04:05:10 pm Gustin Johnson wrote: I am a big fan of openwrt. You can even run openwrt on X86 hardware, giving you the best of both worlds IMO. Of course I am now right back where I started, a vanilla Linux box where the routing, netfilter, DNS, etc is all configured by hand. Thanks for the posts. I took a look at http://openwrt.org/ I'm not familiar with networks and routers, so I'm still not sure of what to do with this. Is there some more help I can find? Can you recommend a router that I could get? I was also wondering what openwrt would add to the router? [clug-talk] IPCop
Thanks for the input. It looks like installing IPCop is best on a separate computer. I have a P3 I could use. I was just wondering how much power it would use to have another computer running ? Would using a router give enough protection or would I need a firewall? [clug-talk] IPCop
I would like to add IPCcp as a firewall. Does IPCop have to be installed to it's own computer? Can I install it to the same computer (that I'm running Linux on) to another hard drive?
