[clug-talk] Wireless Internet

2019-05-21 Thread Joe Shuttleworth
I will be staying at the Peter Lougheed hospital for the time being. The only
connection I have is Healthspot. It is a pain to hook up to. I have to try
various browsers and still a lot of muking around. Does anyone have any
suggestions to get this working. Not a lot of experience, so need a simple
solution.

Thanks,

[clug-talk] Trouble with backups

2019-05-21 Thread Joe Shuttleworth
I decided to use rsync to do a backup. I the most familiar with.
I got most of my backups done, but tried making a directory in
/media/joe/rbackup/backup.00. Couldn't do it. It said there was already a file
there, but couldn't see one. I was trying to make: /usr/local in there. I tried
rebooting the laptop, no help.

Re: [clug-talk] lenovo thinkpad

2019-05-15 Thread Joe Shuttleworth
Do know anything about the Lenovo Thinkpad T40S. Are they good for a laptop?
the age of this machine?
Is it a 64 bit? I don't know much about bios, so I need to know if this is good
for modern distros. Also concerned about removing the operating system and not
being able to return if I can't get Linux to work. I would like to stick with
Busnsenlabs. I know it and don't have the time to learn something else. I think
the hard drive is solid state, 500 G. I can't remember what else. I don't have
my receipt handy, so will have to contact Memory Express.

Thanks for help

My Lenovo Thinkpad T430 (~7 years old) boots up fine in Mint 19.1 based on
Ubuntu 18.04 with Linux kernel 4.15. Make sure secure boot is turned off (or
legacy boot is on). Mine is set to boot "both" and I am able to interrupt
default boot and select a USB with ISO image. I did have to start in
"compatibility mode" which has slower video rendering, but I suspect that I
could resolve video driver issues after installation and boot normally
thereafter. I am leaving it running Win10 right now for various reasons.

Good luck.

You'll need to figure out where the claws configuration files were kept on your
old system. I think the default is $HOME/.claws-mail/. If you copy this folder
to your new system you should be good. Your mail itself may be in a different
place, but the configuration files probably say where.

If you copied your entire home directory from the old system, you may find that
claws is already set up with the previous configuration. However, if you backed
up only the files and directories you can see, ie the ones that don't begin
with '.', you'll be missing a lot of important stuff.

Re: [clug-talk] Computer not booting

2013-09-30 Thread Joe Shuttleworth
I was able to boot up CrunchBang today with the System Rescue CD, but not
Windows. CrunchBang seems to be working ok now.Is it alright to run the 32 bit
version on a 64 bit Intel laptop?

I tried to reinstall grub in the MBR:
root@sysresccd /root % grub-install --root-directory=/mnt/custom /dev/sda

and got this message

root@sysresccd /root % /dev/sda does not have any corresponding BIOS drive

I was hoping to do a clean install, from what I've read Windows will only let
me shrink the partition to half and I don't want to leave it with 300 G.

Hi Joe,

Sorry you're having problems with your dual boot setup. I've never
tried crunchbang in a dual boot set up. I wonder how well it plays with
windows, especially with an EFI drive. I can tell you Ubuntu works well
with Windows 7. In theory, crunchbang should work fine. If I were in
your shoes I'd do the following:

1) Clean install windows 7. Allow windows to partition the drive the
way it wants. This usually means 3 partitions, including a 300MB boot
partition and a 20 GB or so recovery partition in addition to the main.

2)Shrink main windows partition (not the boot or recovery) from within
windows.

3)make windows recovery CD (just in case)

3)Install Crunchbang on free space. Allow Crunchbang to auto partition
the drive (making sure not to touch the windows stuff). Don't do manual
partitioning here.

You shouldn't really need to do anything else.

Good luck.

Chris

Re: [clug-talk] Dual Install

2013-09-24 Thread Joe Shuttleworth
How do I need to partition the hard drive: how many partitions do I need to
make primary for Windows 7 and Linux? If I install Windows 7 in one partition
will it partition itself? Would I need a Recovery partition if I have an
installation DVD? I'm not sure what that is used for.

Running the Windows 7 on a virtual machine sounds interesting, I just don't
know if my computer would be up to that and whether I have the time to study
and set that up.

I did something similar with a laptop I bought a year or so ago. Using
Windows 7 Kubuntu. I don't believe I touched the recovery partitions
or anything like that. Everything went pretty smoothly actually until I
tried to view my partitions in Windows they disappeared. I did lose
some data but it gave me a chance to re-visit re-structure things.

I set it up again it was only recently (truthfully no sure when) that
I lost access to my Windows 7 partition am not 100% on in the Kubuntu
side. It could have been an update or something else. Not sure why
because I am not sure when it happened.

I did try to set-up a shared partition between the two with the hope of
using the same Thunderbird (and others) profile information from both.
I think I also set-up the partitions as fairly minimal at first (i.e.
100 GB or so) then when re -did it split things a bit more equitably
based on my usage...so about 250 GB for Windows the rest Linux.

I am looking to re-install things on the laptop but this time I will
likely make a full Linux partition likely with Windows 7 as a virtual
machine. I still want to try to be able to share information between
the two though so will need to look into how to do that more effectively
then I have in the past.

Also if an onboard video is good, I might look at getting a barebones

agpgart42696 2 nvidia,intel_agp

If the driver is installed, why is Kubuntu not using it?

Thanks.

[clug-talk] Kubuntu: KDE , xorg.conf

2009-07-26 Thread Joe Shuttleworth
I installed Kubuntu 9.04
I have some issues with KDE:
When I first installed Kubuntu the resolution and refresh rate was set
to: 1600x1200. I was having thin white lines flickering through the
desktop. This is the same for other distros, but was fixed when I
lowered the resolution to 1280x1024.

I set the resolution and refresh rate for the monitor to 1280x1024 which
usually fixes this, but am still having problems

Is Kubuntu buggy as far as KDE is concerned; I read an article on the
internet that says Kubuntu 9.04 uses KDE from the unstable repsoitory?
Would there be less problems installing Ubutu instead or can I fix this?

I also have a copy of the xorg.conf file:
I got this from running: sudo dpkg-reconfigure -phigh xserver-xorg
There doesn't seem to be much information showing: drivers, video card,
etc. Can I get another xorg.conf file that would show more?
I want to install a nvidia driver:
01:00.0 VGA compatible controller: nVidia Corporation NV6 [Vanta/Vanta LT]
(rev 15)
and I will need to edit the xorg.conf file. I would also like to see
about how it is configured.

I was wondering what the issue is with RPMs. I heard wome negativity
about these in the past, but don't know what it is about?

[clug-talk] difference between Debian and Ubuntu?

2009-07-20 Thread Joe Shuttleworth
Thanks to those who gave me advice on distros. I think I might try a
few. I want something for a desktop. One that I want to try is either
Debian or Ubuntu, but I would like to hear more about what the differences are
between these.

Do they have support for Nvidia?

Is Ubuntu stable?

I know Ubuntu is based on Debian, but are there some important differences?

Thanks.

 maintenance was an issue)

What were the problems as far as using Slackware: maintenance, etc. Can
you elaborate.

I'm curious because I have been using Slackware for a couple of years
(Maybe because I wanted to learn Linux, and curious because I heard about
Slackware). I like Slackware, but I wish it would have a way to
resolve dependencies. Some say that a Package manager that resolves
dependencies can be a problem (any comments?) I would also like to try out
some other distros. What other distros would you recommend. What are the
similarities and differences to Slackware?

Thanks

Re: [clug-talk] Distro choice, besides *buntu?

2009-07-19 Thread Joe Shuttleworth
Fedora, Cent, RHEL, *Ubuntu, possibly Mandriva (never personally tried
it), and not in that order (I am pretty much a Ubuntu and Debian guy
100% of the time now, with the exception of OpenWRT that I put on my
NSLU2s, my routers run voyage linux a Debian derivative).

How do these distros work as far as compiling packages. I'm just wondering
incase I need to install a package in the future that isn't in the repository?

[clug-talk] Question about programs for IPtables

2009-07-14 Thread Joe Shuttleworth
I want to use a program as a firewall for Iptables.
Is it OK to run a program as a GUI as root to do this, or would there be
problems with this?

I was using Guarddog to do this as a normal user and it gave me this message:

Since you do not have superuser privileges, Guarddog is running with
reduced functionality. Firewall scripts may be Imported/Exported, but
the system's firewall settings may not be changed.Since you do not have
superuser privileges, Guarddog is running with
reduced functionality. Firewall scripts may be Imported/Exported, but

Some other ones I was looking at are fwbuilder, firehol. Are these better
choices?

Thanks for any help.

[clug-talk] Faxing

2009-06-19 Thread Joe Shuttleworth
I would appreciate advice on sending faxes.
Can you recommend devices(models) for sending faxes: fax machine or modem?
Which is a good way to go. I want to use this with Linux.
Can I get a fax machine that I can load a file into to send?

Thanks.

I am a big fan of openwrt. You can even run openwrt on X86 hardware,

Of course I am now right back where I started, a vanilla Linux box where
the routing, netfilter, DNS, etc is all configured by hand.

Thanks for the posts.

I took a look at http://openwrt.org/
I'm not familiar with networks and routers, so I'm still not sure of what to
do with this. Is there some more help I can find?

Can you recommend a router that I could get?

I was also wondering what openwrt would add to the router?

Thanks

[clug-talk] IPCop

2009-06-12 Thread Joe Shuttleworth
Thanks for the input. It looks like installing IPCop is best on a separate
computer.
I have a P3 I could use. I was just wondering how much power it would use to
have another computer running ?

Would using a router give enough protection or would I need a firewall?

Thanks

I would like to add IPCcp as a firewall. Does IPCop have to be installed to
