For those interested on the CLUG-talk list let me know if you find this
confusing as I all ready got a comment from a new comer who was not
really sure at first which club meeting he was attending?

Thanks

Re: [clug-talk] CUUG February 28, 2016 General Meeting - Raspberry Pi

2017-02-26 Thread Melvin Walters

Topic: about CLUG-TALK LIST

Why be confused? Amount of time these emails have been sent has little
to do with the issue really.

I approved it as a collaborative effort to see how it would work out.
Sounded like a good idea at the time.

You and I are not confused because we know all about it being members of
both clubs.

My question is not about people like us, but relating to those looking
to join or get involved with the Calgary Linux Users Group. This is a
signal to noise ratio problem.

CUUG events news emails could be better served by creating a new
CLUG-LIST for those that want to sign up. Something like
clug-at-cuug-events or similar may work?

This is my point of view at the moment looking at if from the point of C
L U G talk and events moderator.

When some one walks in to the meeting and tells me "I'm new and showed
up but was unsure of what club this meeting is for when he read the
clug-talk list? Yes he wanted GNU/Linux.

It is not his fault because an intelligent, articulate person showed up.
So that leave's the question of how we are using the media.
For everyone who speaks up there is a much greater number who leave and
*hopefully* do not pass on their experience. (Part of Customer Service 101)

I see no other way to resolve this. If you can not see this it would
seem this is a Calgary Linux Users Group problem and not your problem.

I would both like to keep up the communication between the two clubs and
also keep mail list topics very pertinent and useful to our
subscribers/members.

Comments from clug-talk subscribers are welcome on or off list.

Thanks in advance.

[clug-talk] Monthly Meeting -- June 7, 2017 (Calgary Linux Users Group)

2017-06-02 Thread Melvin Walters
Calgary Linux Users' Group
Monthly Meeting -- June 7, 2017

What is in it for you?

Learn more about membership benefits
More control over how you use your computer

Trust, Privacy and ease of use are being brought up or help
requested. It use to be somewhat manual to set up but I have only
started to look into this for more polished and modern applications.
Anyone still interested in help with installation or planning
lets talk. The main kind of install, would require the least risk is
a one blank hard drive install. (backups done or not needed) We can
not call it anything like an install fest yet.
Some possibilities: Linux Mint (3 flavors), Linux flavored
Solydxk rolling Debian LTS based on Stable, Debian Stretch for those up
to it. My virtualbox got to kernel v 4.9.0 with aptitude safe-upgrade
without seeming to break.
And three versions of Solus Linux including Gnome, others?

How easy has the Linux workstation/laptop become for personal and
networking use?

Last month, if you remeber, I showed something NOT to do for those
that noticed the kernel panic from booting an incompatible Multi-boot
Live-usb-boot.

Until you try it out in real life I do not see how to answer this. So
I plan to bring along a small example of my improved experience to
the meeting to show. Your mileage may very.

On top of this I will try out an advanced game demo that used to be
overly complicated to set up.

With so many hardware installs to play with I found ways to break
and fix booting up. Legacy mbr boots and GPT uEFI
To get there (OS and setup) I found I had to chose my path very
carefully to save on time.

My demonstration is using lesser hardware in the way of an older
laptop with only 4GB RAM but it is lighter to carry and does the job
ok ish :)

Flightgear has been around for quit a while and is becoming more
capable and polished. But in the past it was a bear to setup at all.
A demonstration will have to be a small subset of the possibilities
in the interest of time. But even difficult tasks are far easier to
accomplish now. My demo is based on one of the two modern
distributions that seem capable
The point is to show how much it has improved along with Linux
but I will not say ir is any easier to learn how to fly. For that you
will want to get qualified instruction unless all you are concerned
with is where do I reset the simulator?.

Welcome back and thanks for your interest.

Topics:

Item 0)
Basics course. Have you noticed no one has yet offered to do it all for
us? No judgement here.

It will much more fun to pick our own interest points. And who knows
what we may find just trying things out for our selves?

Item 1A)
HUGO static web server. I see many interesting blogs on this and am
attracted to it for a number of reasons. Take note of it’s license.
Over a month ago I tried out HUGO the static website generator. I am
revisiting this topic because of the extra work and security concerns
with our WordPress setup. But mostly I want to have some fun.

I installed HUGO on a ubuntu based Solydxk 9 install using apt-get
install hugo. It worked.

For the demo I will be using a Solus Linux 3 install.

I can see why developers say they have fun with this on their
workstation/laptop.

Item 1)
Is modern GNU/Linux becoming cool yet? How has the World been changing
and does it relate to Linux? Clubs? (might have to defer this for now?)

Item 2)
What ever happened to CLUG Reboot?

Things that have not been fully addressed yet: a) making individual
contributions easier to do on our own schedule and less time consuming.
b) redefining club not discussed or documented. c) change starts with
members willing to talk about this.

Item 3)
George Chase – Instructor, Information and Communications Technologies
Dept. has deferred his talk to the new year or later.

George proposed a demo mini-lab showing us how to set up your own

Re: [clug-talk] Need driver for Sound

2017-11-07 Thread Melvin Walters
Hi Joe,
After searching online a while for your problems solution I could so
far only find reference to getting into BIOS by F1 or DEL buttons on
boot. Multiple references to this fan speed sound card issues (for your
M/B) did not say anything about Linux settings even though settings
solved most all of my Linux sound problems in the past.
Some one else stated it worked perfect in Ubuntu after install.
So my point is I am not yet convinced it will end up being a Linux
settings issue but I would need to see the BIOS settings to see if that
would seem worth considering.
That's my hunch anyway. Questions:- What distribution/version are you
using?- Was a Linux Live boot able to run sound?
These are some tools I would consider trying. My personal observation is
any really Modern Distribution that is worth while gets it right most
of the time. Even so, weird things can trip us up.That looks like a
interesting mother board and I not had problems with Asus and Linux, so
this IS puzzling.

[clug-talk] Annual General Meeting -- June 20, 2018

2018-06-14 Thread Melvin Walters

Calgary Linux User Group
Connecting Linux and Open Source Enthusiasts

Annual General Meeting (AGM) June 20, 2018
May 21st, 2018
Important Annual General Meeting scheduled!

June 13… It is only one week away from the AGM and there were minimal
comments about elections so far.

Those new new to and revisiting GNU/Linux seem the fastest growing part
of our group.

I would like to see information for computer fundamentals, followed by
things specific to GNU/Linux.
What ever I contribute will likely be GPLv3 licensed and epub or other
open formats to share freely.
The very nature of collaborative Linux is inclusive by nature so all are
welcome.

We have seating for 40 people and we hope to end up with much more than
a quorum.

===
Please note:

Additions to the club bank account signatory should happen as soon as
the bank completes their paper

work from our May 31 Letter of direction.

In an effort to be thorough in research I find I have to back off
somewhat for now. Other technical
volunteers stepping forward will be greatly appreciated. Otherwise
things may take longer…. Interested

in GNU/Linux?

Do you only see the possibilities and not the limitations?

Now is a good time to get involved.

Re: [clug-talk] Regarding Beginner Classes

2018-05-26 Thread Melvin Walters

Hi Jose,

Thank you from starting this topic up again. It's come up many times before.
People are making very good suggestions and a general training or review
of basics is in order.
If we are able to pass on the basic and very fundamental computer
concepts that will put give everyone a big advantage.

A good foundation of fundamentals puts us in a better position for more
advanced topics too.
Next meeting is June 20, but some may even chose to get involved before
hand.
I am busy too but will see what I can do and when. Been teaching some on
an individual basis.

When I get back to my computer later today I will expand on what our
venue at the Central Library is doing for us and welcome entertaining
new ideas.

I have run into a good resource that I will be tutoring and mentoring
with for these topics.

Sorry got to go for now.

Re: [clug-talk] Linux Sucks

2018-12-31 Thread Melvin Walters
I agree with Robin's point but if I may add some:
1/ I was never under the illusion our problems will be solved once so
we will be all done. It will takecontinued focus and effort by all
those involved. And awareness by us as to what is really going on.
2/ Whether a Company or individual; Only Integrity is Going to
Count.[A]
Shedding light for people to know what is going on is needed, and
public opinion will do the work. Notus. Stay positive, negativity will
not help our cause.
3/ Two examples of non or lesser bloatware. How about openBSD OS or
Solus Linux?De Raadt's openBSD is lean with the cruft thrown out for
security and 10 years ahead of the rest.I want to try it out more when
I can make time:)
I enjoy taking the boot fast and efficient Budgie Solus Linux Desktop
for a spin - stable-current 4.19.12-106that has been shared with other
open projects.
Also have enjoyed trying out Ubuntu-Budgie
So I try to stay balanced and keep smiling at least some of the time in
technology.
Well that's my less than a nickles worth. So I will hit send before
more proof reading.

[clug-talk] restic and borg backup both worth a careful look

2018-12-15 Thread Melvin Walters
Thanks Blair for being interested in these BSD licensed - block level
deduplicating backup programs. I later found the documentation on Restic
and noticed how similar it ran to Borg.
I just loved how fast and efficient Borg backup performed when I last
tried it out few months ago.

Both have free(freedom) and commercial supported versions.
Did not see any GUI for free versions yet.

I found some links to the documentation.
Also a comparison a company made for themselves. Well worth a read.

Nov 12, 2017 - Borg and Restic are both deduplicating backup programs.
... In other words, backups made with Borg or Restic are incremental in
nature, but each archive/snapshot can be restored as if it

were a standalone, full backup.

[clug-talk] February Calgary Linux Users Group Meeting -- Cloud

2018-12-25 Thread Melvin Walters

Calgary Linux Users Group Meeting

Date: February 6, 2019 — 5:45 to 7:30 PM
Place: Central Library 4-20F Meeting Room. (seating for 8)
Address: 800 3 Street SE, Calgary, AB T2G 2E7

Talk by Raymond Burkholder:
Build a mini open source cloud to monitor/manage a larger vmware based cloud

I have been thinking of doing a presentation on some work I've done:

Using SaltStack to build personal private clouds on bare metal.
Through the presentation I can sprinkle sn$

* debian pxe boot files
* how I use Saltstack to custom build pxe boot files
* using iproute2 for kernel based network configurations
* using Open vSwitch for layer 2 switching
* using Free Range Routing for layer 3 route distribution with BGP,
EVPN, anycast

* using LXC for containers (rather than docker)
* maybe some nftables configurations for basic security
* how redundancy and resiliency is built into the solution

This configuration was used to build a mini open source cloud to
monitor/manage a larger vmware based cloud.

[clug-talk] Dec 5, 2018 -- Calgary Linux Users Group Meeting

2018-12-02 Thread Melvin Walters
Who would like to meetup Downtown and try out the New Modern Main
Calgary Public Library facilities?
They have 30 meeting rooms of various sizes so in future it could be
feasible to have multiple channels of interest going on at the same
time if desired?
Rooms have to be booked by Calgary Public Library members who agree to
the CPLibrary and CLUG rules
Date: Dec 5, 2018 -- booked from 4:30 PM to 7:30 PM
Place: Central Library 3-19C Meeting Room. (seating for 12 and wall
mount TV -HDMI cable)
Address: 800 3 Street SE, Calgary, AB T2G 2E7 just across 3rd street
SE, East & south of City Hall train station.
See Map below! zoom in for detail.
Getting there:
Calgary Transit seems the best way to get there.
Unless you have your own parking spot you may find may find the Parking
Authorities costs high in the downtown core. There is a drop off point
[map pin] and special needs elevator on the south east side via 8 Ave
SE, across from a small pay for lot. Also another larger parking lot
starting a block more to the east.
Read any parking instructions carefully and be prepared to pay. I
might be walking from outside the downtown area. Good exercise for me:)

He has to drive in from out of town so Raymond would like to make it
worth while.
My also want to look at a bigger room depending on your response?

What do you think?

Using SaltStack to build personal private clouds on bare metal.Through
the presentation I can sprinkle snippets of code from:
* debian pxe boot files* how I use Saltstack to custom build pxe boot
files* using iproute2 for kernel based network configurations* using
Open vSwitch for layer 2 switching* using Free Range Routing for layer
3 route distribution with BGP, EVPN, anycast* using LXC for containers
(rather than docker)* maybe some nftables configurations for basic
security* how redundancy and resiliency is built into the solution
This configuration was used to build a mini open source cloud to
monitor/manage a larger vmware based cloud.

Re: [clug-talk] next meeting?

2019-03-05 Thread Melvin Walters

Welcome Steven,
Would you find it easy enough to meet at the Central Library?

I could see about booking a small room for 13/03/2019 6:15 till 7:30 PM
that could hold up to 10 newly interested GNU/Linux.

We could talk and if I have time I could prepare a quick demonstration
of an example OEM type install like POP!_OS.

The idea is just a look and play introduction for the fun of it.

If not, the following Wednesday might work too?

[clug-talk] June 5 CalgaryLUG Meeting -- AI from a beginner talk

2019-06-02 Thread Melvin Walters
June 5 CalgaryLUG Meeting
CLUG Meeting June 5 – 6:15 to 8:30 PM – Nicholls Family Library

Tomas Florian has previously done a couple talks at Calgary Linux Users
Group (VoIP and Ceph). This should prove to be an enjoyable evening.
Thanks again Tomas for giving this talk! Note: seating limited to 40.

Last scheduled meeting before Summer break!

Date: June 5, 2019 — 6:15 to 8:30 PM
Location:

Nicholls Family Library
Nicholls Family Library Program Room — (on second floor) seating – 40
1421 33 Street SW

Calgary AB T3C 1P2

The Nicholls Family Library is located in Westbrook CTrain Station.
There is parking near the building and drop off area near NNW side.

This Library’s web site seems able to give directions:

https://calgarylibrary.ca/locations/NICHOLLS/
Topic: AI for beginners from a beginner – Open Source AI for
Generalists

Recently I saw a demo of AI technology that could count the number of
people in a security camera video feed. I thought it was pretty cool
and started Googling “how did they do that?”. First I came across
scientific papers that require you to have an advanced math degree to
understand, but soon I stumbled across a whole other class of open
source projects that are pre-packaged and ready to go with zero
math. If you can handle the level of complexity roughly equivalent to
compiling a Linux program from source, you can also start using
powerful AI today.

I’m sure it will be interesting to many of your members.

By design, setup and use is goaled to be easy to set up similar to a

This Pure Debian project has matured with a thriving forum.
Besides buying the commercial version you can also try out a similar
image of the OS on your own repurposed hardware.

My talk will strive to give you a feel for what starting out as
FreedomBox Pioneer could look like.

We will need to brush up on GnuGPG to create our own dynamic

Re: [clug-talk] file transfer

2019-05-17 Thread Melvin Walters
3. Another method
Using the GUI program Grsync may make the transfers easier if you want
whole directories in your home like:Documents Desktop Downloa
ds ... etc.
This GUI has some built in ? help to show you how to get desired
results in source dir ( trailing / OR no trialing /
Probably not advisable to do the home directory itself because then the
hidden directories of the fresh installed home would get
clobbered on the laptop hdd fresh install.
As far as hardware you may own would vary how many steps of grsync it
may take. Or just use USB stick to shuttle them in two steps (copy on,
copy off of usb stick)
Tip: try it first on a small amount of data directory first. (and did
it do what you wanted)

2019-05-08 Thread Melvin Walters
Thanks for the interesting heads up on this topic.
At our last CLUG meeting, by popular vote I ended up looking into an
own servers project to see how far they have got.
I was encouraged by what I've found so far.
It is a neat design and pure Debian poject.Because of the timeliness of
this I will show how to drop a FreedomBox Image on your own repurposed
hardware at our next meeting.

https://freedombox.org/
Pioneer edition box is the store bought version. (Sales Launched April
22) sold by Olimex

Our up coming meeting is May 15 -- 6:15 to 8:30 PM at the Nicholls

[clug-talk] clug-talk short on memory

2021-12-11 Thread Melvin Walters
Just to let you know. I discovered the CLUG mail list and web site have
memory usage alarms that may have been causing issues.

When I can I will be seeking help from our provider but am dealing with
higher priority items at this time.

Mel
