Re: [CODE4LIB] Whatever Happened to the Northeast Code4Lib?

2014-12-05 Thread Jennifer
The first 2 or maybe the first one was at the BLC with Michael Klein who's now
on the west coast. Last year, there was the Northeast Metadata Specialists
unconference (NEMS U). Perhaps this group and code4lib NE can get together. I
don't mind sending out a small survey to see how many people are interested. I
also know of 2 or 3 people who wanted to help with organizing NEMS U and I can
see if we can do it together. The NEMS U people were thinking of either having
it in Boston at Northeastern or in Western Mass. This unconference is free and
bring your own lunch. I also don't mind helping reviving code4lib NE on its
own. How about I send out a small survey to get a sense of how many people are
interested, how far they're willing to travel, when and all that jazz?

[CODE4LIB] Certificate in XML and RDF-Based Systems

2014-12-05 Thread Rory Litwin
Certificate in XML and RDF-Based Systems

http://libraryjuiceacademy.com/certificate-xml-rdf.php

In this 6-course certificate program, you will gain competency as a coder in
XML and RDF-based systems that create, transform, manage, and disseminate
content and metadata. Typically, these are the structures at the heart of
content management systems, repositories, and digital libraries, as well as the
upcoming Bibframe format. Topics covered include XML fundamentals, XPath, DTDs
and Schemas, standard markup languages, XSLT and Xquery, the semantic web, RDFa
and RDFa Lite, RSS, ontologies and linked data, and the SPARQL semantic query
language and protocol.

The series is currently underway, and will start again February 2015. The
listings below are for the sequence restarting then.

Courses in the series:

Introduction to XML

Transforming and Querying XML with XSLT and Xquery

Introduction to the Semantic Web

RDFa1.1 (RDFa and RDFa Lite) and RSS

Ontologies and Linked Data

The SPARQL semantic query language and protocol - the Semantic Web in action

We are offering an optional 7th class, SPARQL, Part 2: writing effective
SPARQL queries and building a Linked Data data store.

These courses work best if taken in sequence, as the sequence builds on
knowledge gained, but we have no formal prerequisites in place. If you need to
take them out of sequence, feel free to contact us about your situation.

You can register for all six courses in the certificate program, at a 10%
discount. The Register button on the web page for the series will register
you for the sequence of classes that starts in February 2015.

[CODE4LIB] Functional Archival Resource Keys

2014-12-05 Thread Ethan Gruber
I was recently reading the wikipedia article for Archival Resource Keys
(ARKs, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Archival_Resource_Key), and there was a
bit of functionality that a resource is supposed to deliver that we don't
in our system, nor do any other systems that I've seen that implement ARK
URIs.

From the article:

An ARK contains the label *ark:* after the URL's hostname, which sets the
expectation that, when submitted to a web browser, the URL terminated by
'?' returns a brief metadata record, and the URL terminated by '??' returns
metadata that includes a commitment statement from the current service
provider.

Looking at the official documentation (
https://confluence.ucop.edu/display/Curation/ARK), they provided an example
of http://ark.cdlib.org/ark:/13030/tf5p30086k? which is supposed to return
something called an Electronic Resource Citation, but it doesn't work.
Probably because, and correct me if I'm wrong, using question marks in a
URL in this way doesn't really work in HTTP.

So, has anyone successfully implemented this? Is it even worth it? I'm not
sure I can even implement this in my own architecture.

Maybe it would be better to recommend a standard set of request parameters
that actually work in REST?

Hi Ethan,

I'm hoping Mark Phillips or one of his colleagues from UNT will respond,
but they have implemented ARK inflections. For example, compare:

http://texashistory.unt.edu/ark:/67531/metapth5828/?
http://texashistory.unt.edu/ark:/67531/metapth5828/??

In particular, the challenges posed by inflections are described in this

BNF and John A. Kunze from CDL.

I'll update the conference page to include all of the below:

  1. The block rate for the conference hotel is $129/night for a single
 or
double. That rate is available Sunday through Thursday nights, and the
link/info for the hotel rate will be included in the registration form.

  2. The registration will be under $200; hopefully substantially under.
  We're busy finalizing this.

  3. TriMet's MAX Red Line runs between the airport and a few blocks from
  the
hotel every 15 minutes from 5 am to 11:30 pm. There is also a downtown
shuttle that can be booked for extended hours right to the Hilton for
 $14
  one-way or $24 round trip
  http://www.bluestarbus.com/downtown-shuttle-schedule.php.

  4. Registration is planned to open Dec. 8th (next Monday). I will
  include
a time in what I post to the conference page.

  5. Beyond the vote link posted previously, the program committee is
scheduled to meet later this week to finalize the schedule and
 presenter
list. The local committee will work with them to get a final
 presentation
  list up before the 8th.

We are capping the registration numbers higher than in previous years
(450-500), and our hope is not to sell out (or rather, to sell out
  exactly
and turn not a soul away).

Thanks for prodding us to get this information out!

Also not on the committee, but I can help with #3: getting to the

  costs
  $2.50 each way.

  1. Hotel price
  2. Estimated registration (I know you don't know for sure yet!)

  This would be immensely helpful.
