-BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE- Hash: SHA1 Hi list, this is a problem I've had since November 2008, passing through OM2008.08, OM2008.09 OM2008.12, Debian, SHR-unstable, SHR-testing, so I could assume that it depends from uboot. If I power up the neo pressing for (more or less) 8 seconds the power button, the Openmoko orange black screen appears, and here it remains. To start _any_ distribution I have to power it up in NAND and select boot, and it makes difficult to power up the Neo in some situations where I could use only one hand, for example while I'm driving car. So, is there a way to configure Neo to start automatically SHR with power button pression? SHR is flashed normally in the phone, and I use uSD only for TangoGPS maps storage. [SHR-testing] Problems with battery

[SHR-testing] GSM restart, how?
-BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE- Hash: SHA1 Hi list, I'm a *very* happy user of SHR-testing. But, in my home's area, GSM covering for my operator (Wind, Italy) is low, and sometimes during call i lost my girlfriend. And, here, all OK. The bad with SHR-testing is that after the line went dead, the Call application sometimes remains open and if I close it manually with the X Illume button, I notice that GSM is lost definitively. If I go to Settings - Phone, it doesn't load the modules or simply says: Could not connect to dbus, but no button is shown to restart dbus. I don't know if this is a dbus problem, but with OM 2008.12 all worked fine also in my home. I need now to restart the Neo to get it work again. I've an observation: I'm also very interested in OpenMoko software for mapping on OpenStreetMap: your idea is really great. Voicenote developer is working (I suppose) on a GPS-correlation support for his software, to use georeferred notes on OSM mapping sessions. Mattias Felsche is working to turn the Neo into a dictaphone, with a python script. In future, we'll probably have - - a software which records audio only on speaking - - a software which records geo-referred audio files - - a software which act as a dictaphone Now, I respect everyone's work, I respect the *great* idea of Free Software as freedom to develop, but could all these ideas be merged into one? Thanks :) I understood voicenote was a shell script. I could not extend it since I needed to use C for doing the voice detection. I did search freshmeat, google, apt-cache search for a dictaphone but could not find anything that'd simply record when I speak. This could be avoided. Today, voicenote needs a good GUI. If we want to integrate voicenote ad monologue without rewriting anything, we have just one possibility: to use a GUI. I was thinking to an interface written simply in PyGtk which handles both the softwares, showing to user 2 options: 1) normal georeferred recording: possible with voicenote; GPS chip is ON 2) recording only on speak: we could start monologue through GUI; GPS chip is OFF 3) georeferred recording on speak: we start monologue; python talks with GPSD, catch coordinates, and insert them in recorded file's metadata. GPS chip is ON So, if we can't merge the code, we could create one GUI to use all the recording software, givin to user the possibility to choose the option according to battery state (if the battery is low, user could turn off GPS and use option 2). I think to have such PyGtk skills, but I'm busy for university until April :( - -- Francesco de Virgilio *Ubuntu-it Member and Wiki Editor* mailto:frad...@ubuntu-it.org http://wiki.ubuntu-it.org/FrancescoDeVirgilio *Wikimedia Italia Member* http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/User:Fradeve11 *OpenStreetMap Mapper* http://www.openstreetmap.org/user/Fradeve11 *Blog* http://fradeve.netsons.org Love - Peace - Freedom - Free Software GPG 0x6482E056 (FP B996 A12C BD52 2A9B CDD3 812D 462D 93B0 6482 E056) -BEGIN PGP SIGNATURE- Version: GnuPG v1.4.9 (GNU/Linux) iEYEARECAAYFAkmlZ4YACgkQRi2TsGSC4Fa5dgCgj3AXMRLwAeNTQOcaGASHbnBx Bu4An01sqfEWf3iv0ragCOgUHbo8vJfo =z7Ju -END PGP SIGNATURE- ___ Openmoko community mailing list community@lists.openmoko.org http://lists.openmoko.org/mailman/listinfo/community

Actually I use my Neo to call my girlfriend and to track with GPS for OpenStreetMap, but I move around with my Neo with the terror of an empty battery after a long call or a tracking session. The development is getting big steps quickly, I've read Paroli is now working, the first killer apps are on the road, but I think we need a decent WiFi support and a less hungry kernel... how near are we? Are there stable and not draining-down kernels avaiable today? The real problem is that for my complicated day 15h life with a normal use of the phone is too few. My last mail was finalized to find a pretty way to improve the life of my FR. This is the way. I think that SHR unstable + the Rechargeable USB Emergency Power Backup Pack suggested by Timo Juhani Lindfors You can buy extra batteries. The USB battery http://www.dealextreme.com/details.dx/sku.3060 is only $14.43. I don't think this lets you use it for 3 days but it will at least make it 12 instead of 6 hours. should work for me. I think that implementing this the Neo FreeRunner will be the first phone for mappers (I'm referring to OpenStreetMap). Georeferred voice notes could be a coolest feature in a completely open phone to produce completely open maps. Actually, the audio mapping[1] is supported by the main OSM editor, JOSM[2], and is the smartest way to collect streets names for bikers. An important note: it is not necessary for a mapper to have the recordings georeferred with latitude and longitude, the audio metadata could contain simply the time catched by GPS, and in this way the file will be georeferred on a GPX. In both the cases, again, after TangoGPS (with OSM support) this could be the big step to create a phone for mappers. Sometimes it freezes while I'm in my car, crunching km and tracking for OpenStreetMap[1]. Is it related with CPU overload or something similar? Re: Workaround for using speech-dispatcher without blocking /dev/dsp for other apps
Interesting workaround ;) Pratically, the only modules to cheange from alsa to oss (for me) are: - espeak.conf - festival.conf - flite.conf - ibmtts.conf But, for a n00b like me, it is not clear how the /etc/init.d/speech-dispatcher file should be adapted. Could you provide directly the adapted file? Regards, Korbinian Rosenegger wrote: Hi Many of you had problems with openmoocow not mooing or lightsaber not starting and complaining about No available audio device. This is often (always?) caused by speech-dispatcher blocking /dev/dsp. So here's a workaround for using speech-dispatcher without blocking the sound device for applications that use OSS. It's using the OSS output of speech-dispatcher and starting it with the alsa-oss wrapper for using ALSA. The reason for this is because the OSS output opens the sound device only when needed for speech output while the ALSA output keeps it open all the time (which wouldn't be a problem when using ALSA only since then the drivers can do mixing, but the OSS compability layer in the kernel does not support mixing (as fas as i understood it, has to be done in userspace with dmix)). I tried it with dmix on my freerunner, but it sounds rather bad, so I found this workaround. Steps to do: - Install alsa-oss and add a missing link: opkg install alsa-oss ln -s /usr/lib/libaoss.so.0 /usr/lib/libaoss.so - Change the output method of all used modules in /etc/speech-dispatcher/modules/*.conf from alsa to oss - Use the aoss wrapper in /etc/init.d/speech-dispatcher. Do this twice there (once for start in line 18, once for restart in line 31). Change the second line from --exec $DAEMON to --exec aoss -- $DAEMON: start-stop-daemon --start --quiet --pidfile $PIDFILE \ --exec aoss -- $DAEMON - Restart speech-dispatcher - Enjoy openmoocow or ko-lightsaber while speech-dispatcher is running I hope I haven't forgot a step here. If any of you has a better solution please let us know. (Of course you also can run lightsaber or openmoocow with the aoss wrapper without touching speech-dispatcher. Maybe this is the better solution, but then you have to touch every app that uses OSS, and maybe you'll get similar bad quality as with dmix like I did.) Maybe someone knows if it is possible to let speech-dispatcher behave the same with the alsa output method to open the sound device only when it's needed? [2008.12] python-pygps unusable
Hi all, first of all, thanks again for bring us 2008.12, I think it's the best image of all times for my FR. Today I've tried to set up a little script in python using the GPS and installed from opkg the package python-pygps. After that, opening a python console, tried to import the gps module, and received an error message (something about a calendar module not present or similar). Now, I spet a _lot_ of time searching for solution, and googling I got my answer: bug #2083[1]. This makes the gps bindings for python complete unusable on OM 2008.12, until you install from opkg the package python-datetime. Re: www.opkg.org - Relaunch!
Woow! Probably the greatest Christmas gift for this year! Tobias Kündig ha scritto: Dear Community, After hours of coding I can present you my little christmas gift for Openmoko and the whole community: The relaunch of www.opkg.org. The whole site was recoded. There is a new system and a shiny new design. These are the changes I made: New Design --- The old design wasn't very pretty. The new one is more professional and hopefully user friendlier than the old one. The best results you'll get on a resolution of 1280x1024 pixels. I'm sure there are some displaying bugs in other browsers than firefox or in other resolutions. If you find one, please drop me a line and I'll fix it ASAP. There are also some small goodies. For example all new packages since your last visit are highlighted in the overview. One note: Please remember that I don't speak English as first language. So I'm sure there are a lot of grammatically mistakes in the text. Please let me know that, so I can correct them. Improved member area --- If you are logged in, the member area are now appears on the homepage. You'll find a list of all your packages with useful links like «Edit» or «Restore older version». By the way, you now can delete your packages yourself. The API remains the same --- The API wasn't changed at all. So if you began to write an application using it, you don't have to change anything. It simply was ported to the new system - but the results it gives you, are the same than the old one. What you should change --- The URLs for the RSS-Feeds have changed. So please update the URL in your RSS-Reader. Furthermore I'm sure that not all updates since last Friday are correctly imported into the database. So please check the packages you updated since last Friday. What's next? --- There are some features I'd like to include in the future. First of all there's a repository I'd like to create. And maybe I'll include a feature where you can give the visitor information about the compatibility of your package. So you can say, yes, it works on OM2008.12 but not on FSO, for example. Maybe I'll have to change the category names too because there is some conversation on the mailing list about it. We'll see... Of course I'd like to implement your ideas as well. So please write me if you have a revolutionary idea. Please let me know http://www.opkg.org/contact.html what you think of the new site. No new feeds in openmoko-feedreader2?
I've opened openmoko-feedreader2 and I've noticed that there isn't any way to insert a new feed among the default feeds. When clicking on the new feed icon in the 3th tab, nothing happens, and the command line messages do not help to understand where's the problem. Has anyone noticed this? -- Francesco de Virgilio *Ubuntu-it Member and Wiki Editor* mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] http://wiki.ubuntu-it.org/FrancescoDeVirgilio *Wikimedia Italia Member* http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/User:Fradeve11 *OpenStreetMap Mapper* http://www.openstreetmap.org/user/Fradeve11 *Blog* http://fradeve.altervista.org Love - Peace - Freedom - Free Software ___ Openmoko community mailing list community@lists.openmoko.org http://lists.openmoko.org/mailman/listinfo/community
WxPython and OpenMoko
Hi all, simple dirty question: does OpenMoko support WxPython? Or developers *must* use only PyGtk? If don't, will be any possibility to have WxPython supported in future on OM? -- Francesco de Virgilio *Ubuntu-it Member and Wiki Editor* mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] http://wiki.ubuntu-it.org/FrancescoDeVirgilio *Wikimedia Italia Member* http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/User:Fradeve11 *OpenStreetMap Mapper* http://www.openstreetmap.org/user/Fradeve11 *Blog* http://fradeve.altervista.org Love - Peace - Freedom - Free Software ___ Openmoko community mailing list community@lists.openmoko.org http://lists.openmoko.org/mailman/listinfo/community
