[CommunityEngine] Re: Facebook Connect plugin for CE

2009-03-31 Thread Barry Paul

Great idea Bruno, I will be checking this out as Facebook Connect is
next on my list of things to do for our site.

The price seems very reasonable, it would cost us a lot more to do
this in-house. I hope the plugins idea works out as way for you to get
something back from all the hard work you have put into CE.

Thanks,

 Hi everyone!
Thanks to everyone who expressed interest in this plugin. I've finally
packaged it up and put it up for sale (selling a digital download is not as
simple as I would have expected). Anyway, there's a new plugins page on the
 CE site:

 http://www.communityengine.org/plugins.html

And you can buy the CE_Facebooker plugin from there. Please note that it
needs the latest version of CE to work (although it *should* work with
 anything greater than 0.10.8).

What a great integration! What price point are you thinking when you
talk about charging for this plugin?

Very new to RoR, Ruby, programming, and Community Engine. I can speak
for most when I say we love what you're doing, and hope you can keep
the innovation going!

lets users sign in using their Facebook profiles, and also publishes stories
to their news feeds when they perform certain actions on the CE site (like
posting a blog, or commenting). The idea here is to make these sites more
viral, and make it easier for people to join. If you have a Facebook
account, feel free to try it out!

The plugin I've developed is called CommunityEngineFacebooker, and it just
plugs into CE with a few migrations and (10) lines of integration code. I'm
still polishing it up, but I plan to make it available to the community as a
*commercial *offering (meaning I'd charge a per-site license fee for using
it), if there's any interest out there. Why charge for it? Well, it
represents a fair bit of work on my part, and I don't want to make it part
of CE's core. At the same time, I'm looking for ways to monetize CE to
support continued development, and charging for added-value plugins like
CE_Facebooker, while keeping the core open source, seems like a good model.

Show of hands; anyone in the CE community interested in this kind of thing?
It basically would allow you to add Facebook Connect support to your CE site

Me, too!!! Plus, IMspirit needs the by invitation functionality you
have now on curbly.com. Is there any way we can get/buy that from you,
as well? Feels good to be back in the saddle, so to speak. I have a
couple of new CE projects looming and can hardly wait!!! ~ Alexis
