The Computer Room.

Well, not a laptop, but a '6-core desktop' can still be quite fast... E.g.,
the 48-core amd machine I often use is typically only around 2.5 times
faster than a stock i7 3930k (and then I haven't even considered the i7's
overclocking potential). IIRC Remi usually uses a 24-core amd machine, so I
doubt the difference would be huge.

Perhaps Remi can say what exactly was under the hood?

Thanks Detlef, that makes sense. the 5960 is an 8-core (and ridiculously
over-priced IMO).

I actually got an 5820k this week. It should only be slightly slower than
the 5930k, but it is still a bit faster than that 3930k I mentioned before.

Re: [Computer-go] Interviews on codecentric Challenge

2014-10-05 Thread Rémi Coulom
Thanks. It was not a laptop, but a big desktop. i7-5930K, 3.5 GHz, 6
cores, 12 threads. I left the university one month ago, so I don't have
access to the 24-core server any more.

Those 6 cores are really fast. About 3.3 k playouts/s on one core,
compared to about 2k playouts/s on one core of the 24-core AMD (only
playout, no tree search). And Hyperthreading is rather efficient. With
tree search, I get about 15.3k playouts per second with 6 threads, and
25.5k playouts per second with 12 threads. All those numbers are from
the empty starting position.

P.S. Anyone in the group know TCL? I'm not bad at learning new
languages (tend to be the same) but could use some TCL help.

Perhaps my #1 request is someone with a Mac. I can rebuild the
Linux/Windows packages, but could really appreciate someone w/ a Mac
and could download the TCL/build let me email them source (or
download) and build it for distribution. If you need help perhaps I
can walk you thru it. Will definitely note your contribution!

P.S.S. Anyone recommend some FREE 19x19 engines. I've post once or
twice, but still didn't see a link or find info for them. A year or
so back both 9x9 and 19x19 was available on the wiki. I have the 9x9
now and fusing into the server while trying to respect the original
rating for anchor. Still need some 19x19s to run since that seems the
2nd (tie w/ 1st) most used. Kinda giving up on 13x13 till the others
 are smooth.
