I bought it in that year, and for me it was a high calibre eye opener. It is very smooth to read, and contains a lot of interesting stuff, even for those people who are not especially engaged in computer Scrabble. The core part is Chapter 10, on simulations (called Monte Carlo runs in other fields). I like especially Section 10.5 on the historical development (hand simulations by Ron Tiekert in the 1980's). Don, How did you order? I just clicked on the paper and was sent through a maze of crappy PayPal screens. The description and payment amounts were blank. And when I tried to fill them out, it wants to charge me US $20.00. I am not sure what I am doing wrong. I typed: Towards perfect play of Scrabble Sheppard (with quotes as above) in Google scholar Followed the links from the first URL until http://arno.unimaas.nl/show.cgi?did=10724 then file 2, which is: http://arno.unimaas.nl/show.cgi?fid=7134 and was able to download a .pdf To my surprise a scanned (not very normal for a 2002 document) 16.7 Mb with the complete 281 pages. I did not find the time to read it yet, but it is in my to do list. Jacques. ___ Computer-go mailing list Computer-go@dvandva.org http://dvandva.org/cgi-bin/mailman/listinfo/computer-go
Re: [Computer-go] Special Offer: Towards perfect play of Scrabble
I don't remember except that it was from the ICGA web site. I am pretty interested in this because I have written scrabble programs for fun. I wrote one in perl just to prove to someone that perl was fast enough (this was more than a decade ago) and it would find the best play in about 5 seconds on a laptop. I also know that modern high performance scabble programs use some kind of monte carlo algorithm.
