Re: [CGUYS] Washington Checkbook sez...
And if someone goes in and purposefully changes important settings, it can take days for someone else to find them. Heck, I'd as often recommend just reinstalling the OS (a couple hours) as I would spend hours and hours trying to figure out how they screwed it up. Even in a professional environment it is a hard call deciding to fix or format. In a consumer environment you must consider that once you charge for a fixed machine you are giving a guarantee that it is fixed. If it ain't you are on the hook to fix it even if the problem is something else. The best course may be to replace everything on the drive. * == QUICK LIST-COMMAND REFERENCE - Put the following commands in == * == the body of an email send 'em to: [EMAIL PROTECTED] == * Join the list: SUBSCRIBE COMPUTERGUYS-L Your Name * Too much mail? [CGUYS] Internet but no mail server
John, I think you got it, pretty much. Although I could swear that previously I wasn't getting incoming mail -- I could see it sitting in my Verizon account when I signed in on line but it wasn't downloading -- I somehow advanced to the point you, and others, have described: getting incoming, but not able to send. And I see I can only send using a bellsouth email address (when signed onto the bellsouth account I set up at my mother's place (for my visits, not for her)). But what's the deal with the various wireless networks one runs into at hospitals, coffee shops, etc.? Some that I hop onto I can send and receive using my Verizon e-mail. Others I can't use email on at all. -- Forwarded Message From: John DeCarlo [EMAIL PROTECTED] Date: Wed, 11 Apr 2007 23:34:32 -0400 Subject: Re: Internet but no mail server On 4/11/07, Harvey Simon [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: I hope I didn't say I can send, but not receive email. If so I apologize. I can do neither. On some networks. On others I can do both. So, all or nothing. Many ISPs will not let you send email (on port 25) to any outgoing mail server except their own. Some may prevent you from downloading via POP, but I haven't seen that. So typically you should be able to download your email from anywhere, but not be able to send any from most places. If you want to send via the Verizon outgoing mail server (something like mail.verizon.net, for example), you will need to be using the Verizon ISP. If your neighbor's wireless is using a cable provider for an ISP, sending won't work. There can be other reasons as well. Did you post your configuration? For example, do you have the incoming mail server set to pop.verizon.net and the outgoing to mail.verizon.net? (I don't know if those are the right ones, but if you post what you have, that will be instructive.) -- John DeCarlo, My Views Are My Own * == QUICK LIST-COMMAND REFERENCE - Put the following commands in == * == the body of an email send 'em to: [EMAIL PROTECTED] == * Join the list: SUBSCRIBE COMPUTERGUYS-L Your Name * Too much mail? [CGUYS] LED bulbs
With recent breakthroughs, the first economic LED bulbs should be hitting stores this summer (so they say). They're more efficient even than fluorescent, so as soon as prices fall they'll be ubiquitous. On 4/12/07, b_s-wilk [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: New Jersey was one of the first states to encourage its residents to switch from incandescent to fluorescent lighting by giving away fluorescent bulbs, then offering additional ones below cost. Any indication that New Jersey or other states will have incentives to switch to LEDs? $35 at C. Crane is prohibitive for a light bulb--I see they have one on sale for $15. I've been working on LED lights for outdoors, using small solar panels with rechargeable batteries. They're fairly easy to make, especially since they're being used for viral graffiti and instructions are online. I haven't seen instructions for making wired LED lights for indoors yet, but expect to see that soon in Make Magazine. * == QUICK LIST-COMMAND REFERENCE - Put the following commands in == * == the body of an email send 'em to: [EMAIL PROTECTED] == * Join the list: SUBSCRIBE COMPUTERGUYS-L Your Name * Too much mail? [CGUYS] fixing Palm DB corruption?
My Palm Calendar (TX PDA Desktop application) database seems to have surreptitiously developed some corruption. Palm's solution is to reload the basic database giving up all the metatags/ categories and then I would need retag/ recatogorize them all And the idiots are not kidding!! ... they have no DB scan and fixit software other than the useless built in tool. I understand there are a couple of 3rd party database repair apps such as dbscan and Kernel *Palm* PDB. Does anyone make any recommendations? My database is critically important. db * == QUICK LIST-COMMAND REFERENCE - Put the following commands in == * == the body of an email send 'em to: [EMAIL PROTECTED] == * Join the list: SUBSCRIBE COMPUTERGUYS-L Your Name * Too much mail? Re: [CGUYS] Light Bulb Life (Stewart)
I found a 1.3 watt bulb for $15.38. That might be worth it in electrical savings alone. They didn't specify a life span but ccranes 60,000 hours translates to 6.8 years of continuous use. I like these things for places that are just too much of a pain to change frequently. Nobody seems to provide a lumens rating. http://www.saveateagle.com/18-led-clr-v04.html?ovchn=OTHERovcpn=Froogleovcrn=18-LED-CLR-V04ovtac=CMP Whoops here is a cheaper one. $12.95 for 0.5 watt bulb. This one is rated at 100,000hours or 11.4 years. http://store.advancedmart.com/11acsc18whle.html On 4/12/07, b_s-wilk [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: New Jersey was one of the first states to encourage its residents to switch from incandescent to fluorescent lighting by giving away fluorescent bulbs, then offering additional ones below cost. Betty The state of NJ changed over every traffic light under their control to LEDs. As you suggested, the cost savings in power and not having to constantly change bulbs paid for the conversion in a year. It was one of the very few intelligent things the state has ever done. As the cost of LED's comes down, we are going to see more and more use of them, where it is appropriate. * == QUICK LIST-COMMAND REFERENCE - Put the following commands in == * == the body of an email send 'em to: [EMAIL PROTECTED] == * Join the list: SUBSCRIBE COMPUTERGUYS-L Your Name * Too much mail?
