Overlooking your slightly incorrect link, called the
DC gummit about another matter today, and learned that
they know nothing about the 22nd (Earth Day), although
that is clearly listed on the website, instead promote
a Saturday 21st dropoff at Carter Barron, 9am to 3pm.
Caveat emtor, this of course is also subject to
change, all is heisenberg uncertainty in our Capital.

Very easy. Very sweet people.

Yesterday's TV news reported long lines at the Carter Barron recycling
site sponsored by DC. So we got to Freedom Plaza 45 minutes before the
start. There was no line. We were immediately directed to pull over to
the curb and they helped us unload directly to the curb and they sent us
on our way. It is now just past 10:30 and I'm back here at my computer.
It could not have been easier. YMMV.

The woman who pullled over right after us was discarding an original Mac.
A guy who was helping me unload reminisced that he had paid $2500 for his
and I said I had too. P.S. I'm keeping my original Mac, but my 1st PC
was gleefully discarded years ago.

This Sunday 11 AM to 3 PM at Freedom Plaza (13 E St NW in DC).

2007-04-22 Thread Michael Lewis
Art Clemons sez:

Jeff Wright:
Do you actually think Gore had the faintest idea of what was yet to come in
1989? His bill was for a top-down researcher's network using
supercomputers, something that is the exact opposite of the Internet
today. It was an appropriation that was eventually in the right place and
the right time. He got lucky. So did Nostrodamus

I wonder if the internet as we know it would exist if Gore hadn't been
lucky as you put it. Gore has flaws, but dislike for him doesn't mean
that he shouldn't get more acclaim for what he did.

Exactly. I choose to listen to Vint Cerf, undisputed as one of the
Founding Fathers of the Internet who said of Al Gore while defending him
from that false I invented the Internet meme:

VP Gore was the first or surely among the first of the members of
Congress to become a strong supporter of advanced networking while he
served as Senator. As far back as 1986, he was holding hearings on this
subject (supercomputing, fiber networks...) and asking about their
promise and what could be done to realize them. Bob Kahn, with whom I
worked to develop the Internet design in 1973, participated in several
hearings held by then-Senator Gore and I recall that Bob introduced the
term 'information infrastructure' in one hearing in 1986. It was clear
that as a Senator and now as Vice President, Gore has made it a point to
be as well-informed as possible on technology and issues that surround it.
Source: Internet archive of mids.org: http://web.archive.org/web/
2125065813/http://www.mids.org/mn/904/vcerf.html

Gore had much to do with legislation that did, according to Cerf, build
the Internet.

It is true, though, that Gore was popularizing the term 'information
superhighway' in the early 1990s (although he did not, as is often
claimed by others, coin the phrase himself) when few people outside
academia or the computer/defense industries had heard of the Internet,
and he sponsored the 1988 National High-Performance Computer Act (which
established a national computing plan and helped link universities and
libraries via a shared network) and cosponsored the Information
Infrastructure and Technology Act of 1992 (which opened the Internet to
commercial traffic).

In May 2005, the organizers of the Webby Awards for online achievements
honored Al Gore with a lifetime achievement award for three decades of
contributions to the Internet. 'He is indeed due some thanks and
consideration for his early contributions,' said Vint Cerf.

Re: [CGUYS] Savvy Senator? [Was: Email Security Contradictions

2007-04-22 Thread Tom Piwowar
Blinded by ideology, Jeff ranted...
No one is denying that Gore put through funding that, in retrospect, was
well timed, but Gore saying the I took the initiative in creating the
Internet is like George Westinghouse saying that he took the initiative in
creating Emiril Lagasse.

Al Gore and the Internet
By Robert Kahn and Vinton Cerf

(Before Jeff demands to know who are these jerks?... Robert Kahn,
invented the TCP protocol, and along with Vinton Cerf created the IP
protocol. So the following is an account from people who were deeply
involved with the Internet at the time these events happened.)

Al Gore was the first political leader to recognize the importance of
the Internet and to promote and support its development.

As far back as the 1970s Congressman Gore promoted the idea of high
speed telecommunications as an engine for both economic growth and the
improvement of our educational system. He was the first elected official
to grasp the potential of computer communications to have a broader
impact than just improving the conduct of science and scholarship. Though
easily forgotten now, at the time this was an unproven and controversial
concept.

Gore secured the passage of the High Performance Computing and
Communications Act in 1991. This Gore Act supported the National
Research and Education Network (NREN) initiative that became one of the
major vehicles for the spread of the Internet beyond the field of
computer science.

As Vice President Gore promoted building the Internet both up and out,
as well as releasing the Internet from the control of the government
agencies that spawned it.

Gore provided much-needed political support for the speedy privatization
of the Internet when the time arrived for it to become a
commercially-driven operation.

No one in public life has been more intellectually engaged in helping to
create the climate for a thriving Internet than the Vice President. Gore
has been a clear champion of this effort, both in the councils of
government and with the public at large.

Big deal if he gives money to a political party. Lots of people do. That

Re: [CGUYS] How do I compress MPG files

2007-04-22 Thread Tom Piwowar
First thing to do is to frame the video to the size YouTube wants (320 x
240). If you have not already done this, it will make the file a lot
smaller.

Software, called a CODEC (COder-DECoder) does the compression. There are
many different CODECs with different properties. The two basic types of
CODEC produce eiter smaller files or better quality files. A transfer
CODEC is used to make files that you use for editing (high quality). A
delivery CODEC is used for making smaller files. Some CODECs are best
for specific types of images (like animations). The H.264 (QuickTime Pro
$29) and Sorenson (expensive) CODECs are good for making small video
files.

Other things you could do are reduce the frame rate or the data rate; or
ask for fewer key frames; or reduce the color depth; or lower the
quality setting (similar to making a smaller jpeg).

Large files at YouTube are commonly posted in sets so you may want to
break up the performance into several smaller units.

[CGUYS] Need advice on buying new desktop PC

2007-04-22 Thread GMiller
Hi ...

I have a neighbor who wants to buy a new desktop computer. He now has a laptop
but suddenly he can't get online with it. Comcast came today and checked out
everything, finally concluding that it must be the computer (not the modem, the
cables, etc.).

I have a Dell E510 (a year old) that I'm very happy with. Dell's E520 seems to
be a direct update of mine and I believe it has everything he wants (big HDD,
lots of RAM, built-in networking card, CD/DVD-RW, [duo-core processing -- I
recommended that because it's what I have] and a 19 flat panel monitor). His
previous computer (before the laptop) was a Gateway so he asked me to check
them -- and it seems Gateway has essentially the same machine (DX 430) as the
Dell E520 -- but for $699 instead of $819.

I wonder if you'd offer opinions on which of the two computers you think is
best -- OR -- if neither, maybe what you WOULD recommend in about that same
price range (including the flat-panel monitor).

Please don't waste your energy recommending a Mac because it's just not going
to happen. He has PC software; he's an older man who barely knows how to
download his bank statements. So the thought of going to a whole new system is
too much for him.

Thanks in advance for your always wonderful advice,
Gail Miller

Re: [CGUYS] Need advice on buying new desktop PC

2007-04-22 Thread Howard Wall
Without knowing what the computer will be used for I recommend the
cheapest computer you can find. For somebody who isn't going to be
doing anything more complicated than web browsing, e-mail, Quicken and
MS Office almost any computer built in the last 5 years will be adequate
to the task.

You don't say how/why Comcast concluded the problem was with your
neighbor's computer not their hardware but I assume they hooked up test
equipment to the cable modem and got a good signal. Once they got a
good signal at the terminus of their equipment their job was done
because the problem wasn't with their equipment and they could blame
that evil OTHER device.

Your neighbor could likely save himself money by taking the laptop to a
decent repair shop and tell them he can't connect to the web. A good
shop will be able to connect his laptop to a test network and see if
there is a problem with his network adapter or with his network
configuration. If it is an adapter problem a new PC Card network
adapter costs less than $100 dollars and probably less than $150
installed and configured. If it is a problem with his configuration it
will probably cost less than $200 dollars for a technician to fix the
problem.

In either case the cost will be less than the $700-800 for a new
computer and he won't have to deal with the problems of moving data and
applications from the old computer to the new computer.

Thanks Howard.

I suggested that at the outset but I think he really wants a new computer.
As you noted, he mainly uses the computer for email, Quicken, some photo
manipulation (moving from camera to computer to Snapfish) and he does like
to watch DVDs on his computer. So he needs something fast enough to
accommodate that but not a gaming machine or anything near that.

All suggestions sinceraly appreciated.
