It's Automatic Updates. For some reason, I'm seeing this a lot on our
laptops this month, but I don't know why. I've turned off AU, and
 it's
notification that you may be at risk!, off.

 So, that's not a bug that's a feature!

Sadly, yes. You can't say MS is without a sense of irony.

Re: [CGUYS] Help! Debugging svchost.exe

2007-05-16 Thread Jeff Wright
Thanks John--I hadn't had time to look into the cause yet.

 -Original Message-
The Patch Watch section of the latest Windows Secrets newsletter had
 this
to say about the svchost.exe bug:

 * Finally, a real 'svchost.exe' fix *

For those of you who've suffered from *svchost.exe*, which is used by
Microsoft Update, going wild and taking 100% of your workstation's CPU
 resources, help is at hand.

Redmond plans to offer up some long-awaited patches to updaters in the
foreseeable future. But you can get the needed fixes to solve this
 problem
and get your computer back *now* - without having to disable Microsoft
Update and reverting back to Windows Update, or disabling Automatic
 Updates
 altogether.

The fix is two-fold. Both of the following patches are needed to fix
 the
 issue:

. *Step 1: KB 927891.* Download the fix from Knowledge Base article
 927891http://windowssecrets.com/links/ro6hca8gvq3fd/44296ch/?url=www.m
 icrosoft.com%2Fdownloads%2Fdetails.aspx%3Ffamilyid%3D7A81B0CD-A0B9-
 497E-8A89-404327772E5A%26displaylang%3Den(this
link is for Windows XP machines) and install it first.

. *Step 2: WSUS 3.0 client.* Next, install the WSUS 3.0 client update.
 An MSDN
 articlehttp://windowssecrets.com/links/ro6hca8gvq3fd/de91f0h/?url=msdn
 2.microsoft.com%2Fen-us%2Flibrary%2Faa387285.aspxon
this update is available in Microsoft's MSDN library. A link to the
executable is contained near the very bottom of that article, or you
 can
 download the executable using this
 linkhttp://windowssecrets.com/links/ro6hca8gvq3fd/d9dbe0h/?url=downloa
 d.windowsupdate.com%2Fv7%2Fwindowsupdate%2Fredist%2Fstandalone%2FWindow
 sUpdateAgent30-x86.exe.
(There is no easy download page at Microsoft yet, because this fix has
 just
 come out.)

You need this download to install the new Automatic Updates program,
 which
is technically the new WSUS 3.0 client. Even though you may not be
 using
Windows Software Update Services, this download provides you with the
 new
engine that's used by workstations that run Microsoft Update.

You may still see your system spike up to 100% CPU usage every now and
 then.
But we should soon get from Microsoft the much needed, permanent fix to
 this
*very* vexing issue, which many of us have been fighting for months.
 The
promised patches will be deployed to all customers in the coming
 months, as
 discussed in the official WSUS
 bloghttp://windowssecrets.com/links/ro6hca8gvq3fd/d2fd4dh/?url=blogs.t
 echnet.com%2Fwsus%2Farchive%2F2007%2F04%2F28%2Fupdate-on.aspx

Re: [CGUYS] recommendations for Mac compatible printer

I also gave up on HP long ago. Among other problems, buying cartridges
was painful. I thought an Epson I got was a step in the right direction,
but as others have said, it became fussy after a year or so, and would
spend a few minutes cleaning before it would do anything.
I've had a Canon Pixma IP6600d for a couple years now and am pretty
happy with it. I'm not a heavy user, so the cost is not painful and it's
quiet and quick with good quality.

When I worked in a grocery store we had a small contingent of elderly

only service first but that these customers were our base. Often he would
sell one egg to a woman who couldn't understand for the life of her who

I wanted to get a couple of DVD-RWs so that I could do a bit of
experimenting from time-to-time without a screw-up costing me a disk.
The other day as I was perusing the display of DVD-RWs in the computer
store, another customer was doing the same. We both lamented the fact
that there was not a 2-pack or even a 3-pack available, and were both in
agreement that no one would ever need a 10 pack, which was the smallest
 quantity available.

We have a DVD recorder that's connected to our satellite receiver, and
to a VCR. It records anything we want to view later. If it's worth
keeping, we

transfer to DVD-R. There's usually 5 or 6 disks in use at a time,
meaning that they're on the shelf waiting for viewing. I'd rather use
the DVD-RW instead of a DVR. It's much easier to save to disk. They're
very reliable.

Most disks have been reused over 20 times so far with no glitches.
Brand is Maxell, made in Japan. Success and reliability of DVD-RW depends
on the quality of the disks you use.

Re: [CGUYS] DVD-RW

2007-05-16 Thread Robert
I don't know the answer to your question -- it seems today that only a
few DVD-RWs are needed. I've almost quit using them.

But, several years ago the DVD write once was very expensive, and the
success rate of writing to them was not too good. I adopted the
practice of always writing to a rewritable DVD first (sometimes two or
three tries were needed to make a success) then copying it to the
non-rewritable in order to save the cost of throwing away a bad disk.
Once made, I tended to save the RW disks because I might want to make a
second DVD. Now, I have an archive of perhaps 30 rewritable DVDs all
in full-sized jewel boxes.

Perhaps the answer to your question is simply inertia -- it once was
this way and so it continues.

Re: [CGUYS] how to get sound from tape into the computer

2007-05-16 Thread Eric S. Sande
I'd like to get the sound from an audio cassette tape into my
computer, preferably into an MP3 file.

You should be able to do this with what you have.

I have a stereo cassette deck, and a cable that goes from the audio
out (red and white connectors) on the tape player to the line in on
the computer sound card.

Good so far.

When you hear the sound on the headphones, are the 'phones
plugged into the computer or the deck?

In all probability your sound card has an input volume level control,
in software, is this set as appropriate?

If JetAudio has level meters (I've only used Audacity) do they show
signal?

Basically what you are doing is using the analog to digital (ADC)
converter of your sound card to digitize the tape. The software
format is specified by the JetAudio program. You should end up
with a file in a format that you name or specify to be saved to a
location of your choice.

I don't have any idea where to look for it.

No, I don't think they do.

I've used JetAudio a lot, and I'm sure if it was hearing a sound, it
could record it with no problem. The sound is fine when I listen
with earphones to the cassette deck, and the sound isn't reaching JetAudio.

OK, we're making progress. If you are using Windows there
should be an icon in the system tray that says sound or volume or
mixer or something. Do you have that?

Can you connect the headphones to the computer and do you
