[Cooker] [Bug 5917] [Hardware] Mandrake does not load on Machines without floppy drive

Good to know that kernel-2.4.22-12.tmb.1mdk works, anyway if you want to keep
with the original kernel (or let's say you want to use kernel-multimedia), here
are two quick fixes that do the job (choose the one you prefer):

1) rm /lib/modules/2.4.22-10mdk/kernel/drivers/block/floppy.o.gz ; depmod -a
2) recompile your kernel specifying CONFIG_BLK_DEV_FD=n (normal floppy disk
support)

Mandrake Control Center now works flawlessly (see comment #13).
NB: I still have commented floppy entries in /etc/modules.devfs, don't know if
with original /etc/modules.devfs still works (even if I suppose it does).

Hello,

Following bug 4945 and 5877 and thanks to the help of ricksafe.casablanca, it
appears that Mandrake Linux does not load on machines with no parellel port when
acpi=on.
On such machines harddrake always crashes during boot and if harddrake is
disabled, the user cannot log on.
The fix that was proposed is to remove the lines concerning the parallel port in
/etc/modules.devfs. This allows to log in. However, the harddrake service still
fails (and hangs the computer).
I have tested this on two machines (laptop with no floppy and desktop computer
with LS-120). On these machines, neither lspcidrake, not cat /pro/pci hang the
computer (with the fix above).

I confirm the same problem on my Toshiba 5200-902 (European version of the
5205-S703). I solved by disabling harddrake service and commenting floppy
entries in /etc/modules.devfs.

UPDATE: I thought the problem was solved (see comment #12), but my Toshiba keeps
freezing when I launch Mandrake Control Center from KDE or Gnome. NB: When it
freezes even the magic SysReq key doesn't work.

Ok, I posted the original bug. People with the same problem could you try
kernel-2.4.22-12.tmb.1mdk (I think it's in Contrib or Cooker contrib). It seems
to have fixed all problems with me (ACPI update??).

I can confirm this acpi behaviour on a toshiba satellite 5200-903. I don't
know if it really is the floppy thing that is the problem. I tried various
combinations of acpi and pci and noapic statements in the boot line. For this
laptop acpi must be used (=no acpi statement in boot line) otherwise various
modules will not load (no such device). But then, if acpi is used, one cannot
log in as a normal user, only as root. I hosed the system three times and
always did clean re-installs on different filesystems.

I discovered that floppy (pseudo-)fix on this laptop. It was late, I was tired
and had a deadline for that laptop install. So I went into some guerilla
testing. I first tried to su to a normal user: worked. I then tried to startx
from there: complained about missing console ownership. I then tried to turn
over various stuff in /dev over to the user: didn't work. Then I thought:
devices get turned over to the user at login, maybe there's a problem there.
The toshiba doesn't have a bios screen, so there's no disabling certain
hardware from there. I thought that the bios maybe reports hardware present
that actually isn't there. So I started to comment out hardware for devfs and
started with floppy and, IIRC, the parport. I restarted devfsd and could log
in as user.

Otherwise I have no idea what the true problem could be. All I know is that
commenting out the floppy for devfs fixes the problem. I did another clean
install after I had discovered this. Did the commenting right after install
and sure it worked. The owner of that laptop hasn't reported any problems yet,
I take that as a sign that the laptop works pretty well now.

Anyway, this could be a generic toshiba problem.

(MS-6380 XP1600+) that does not have a floppy drive but an LS-20 drive

Oh man, it must have been late in the evening. What I meant was: Mandrake does
not load on machines with no floppy drives... so please change parallel port
in my first statement to floppy dive :-D Very sorry about that

I have no floppy drive in my laptop (Compal ACL-10). I don't know if I have
a parallel port (I think not), I don't think I ever checked. But Mandrake,
although not without problems, loads fine on that machine!

Are you sure it's the floppy drive, or is it a kernel bug for a specific
piece of hardware on your machine(s)?

Cheers

Simon

Could you check that acpi is enabled on the kernel you're booting (i.e.
acpi=on not acpi=ht) cause that's when the problems arise. It would be
interesting to see if this is the case or not.

P.S: could you post the next message on

I can't confirm this. My machine doesn't have a floppy drive and I've disabled
the floppy controller interrupt in the bios. I can boot with acpi without a
crash, but the machine is much slower than with disabled acpi, so I keep it off.
I have an ASUS P4PE with the i845pe chip set.

Hi Gotz,

When you boot with acpi enabled, do you mean acpi=on or acpi=ht?? I haven't
tried booting with the floppy controller - might be worth a shot.
