Jerry Falwell's outing of Tinky Winky, the purple Teletubby, was widespread scorn and hilarity. Comedians and column writers mercilessly ridiculed Falwell for his paranoia in seeing gays under the crib. Three comments in defense of Falwell: First, he didn't write the article in question, which appeared unsigned in National Liberty Journal, a magazine he publishes. When asked about the charge, Falwell said he had never seen Teletubbies and didn't know whether Tinky Winky was homosexual or not. The notion of Falwell attacking a cartoon character is too appealing to liberal prejudices to be easily abandoned. Picture: Second, if you've ever watched Teletubbies, you might well suspect some kind of subliminal messaging. The four tubbies have aerials coming out of their spacesuit hoods, which receive programming that's broadcast on TV screens in their tummies. As they prance out of their bunker and around the strange, apocalyptic landscape where they live, periscope speakers pop out of the ground and feed them orders. It's both cute and creepy. Third, the folks at Liberty College apparently got their idea about Tinky Winky not from watching the program but from reading such publications as the Washington Post and People. On Jan. 1, the Post included "TINKY WINKY, THE GAY TELETUBBY" in its annual list of what's "in" for the New Year. No one got excited. The press, including the Post, then mocked Falwell as a reactionary hick obsessed with the sexuality of puppets. Seems like a bit of a trap. Picture: Is Tinky Winky gay? He is not the first cartoon character to be outed. More often than not it is homosexuals who claim a character as one of their own--which also puts the Falwell fuss in perspective. At the level of the creators' stated intentions, the Teletubbies have no sexual orientation. The program tries to recreate the world of toddlers, which does not involve any level of sexual understanding. But TV programs are group products, and it's not impossible that references--Tinky Winky's handbag, his purple triangle antenna, and the tutu he sometimes wears--are bits of code included for the benefit of adults. If Tinky Winky has a bit more spring in his step than Dipsy, the other male tubby, it may be because the actor who originally inhabited his costume added that dimension. Picture: Batman RobinPicture Batman RobinSexual signals can be received without being consciously sent. The first cartoon characters to be accused of aberrant sexual practices were Batman and Robin. In a 1954 book titled Seduction of the Innocent, a psychologist named Fred Wertham attacked the sadistic violence and sexual deviance portrayed in comic books. Batman and Robin, he noted, were two men living together who liked to wear capes and tights. Back home at stately Wayne Manor, they lounged about in dressing gowns. Wertham was a student of Freud who discovered a message that Bob Kane, Batman's creator, probably never consciously intended. But that doesn't mean it wasn't there. Picture: Wertham's book led to the adoption of a code of standards by the comic book industry, which included, among other things, an admonition that "sex perversion or any inference to same is strictly forbidden." After this history, the Batman TV series, which was made in the mid-to-late 1960s, couldn't plead the same innocence. Post-Wertham, the producers were well aware of the gay take on Batman and Robin. Rather than resist it, they gave a camp tenor to the whole series. In the 1960s, even most adult viewers interpreted the program as broad parody. But once the idea of a gay subtext has been planted, Louie the Lilac (as played by Milton Berle) isn't just a villain who likes to wear purple. In a curious way, gays, their friends, and their enemies have all collaborated in destroying the sexual innocence of cartoon characters by making an issue out of it. When trying to elude Elmer Fudd or Yosemite Sam, Bugs Bunny is liable to dress up as a woman, vamp around, or imitate Katharine Hepburn. Is this meant to indicate that he likes other boy bunnies? Many of these antics were borrowed from vaudeville comedy, where a man dressing up as a woman didn't necessarily imply homosexuality (although the same questions arise in retrospect). The Warner Bros. studio, where these cartoons were created in the 1940s and '50s, was an aggressively heterosexual milieu. Chuck Jones and other illustrators were mocking stereotyped homosexual behavior, not winking at homosexuals in a friendly way. But while a man dressing up as a woman may not have "meant" anything in the 1940s, it does mean something in

By yesterday, it had achieved a ranking of 49 out of 10,000 top titles on Amazon.com, based on advance orders. The publication of the book is expected to be preceded by an interview with ABC's Barbara Walters. Lewinsky's lawyers and independent counsel Kenneth Starr's office have reached a deal, legal sources told the Associated Press and the New York Times, that will allow the interview to air at the end of the February ratings ``sweeps'' period, most likely on March 3. The agreement struck yesterday permits Lewinsky to talk about several aspects of her relationship with Clinton, but she will not be able to provide details beyond what she has revealed in grand jury testimony or interviews with Starr's office. As part of her immunity deal, Lewinsky must clear any interview requests or book book projects with Starr's office. No one has seen advance galleys of the manuscript. However, promotional text on the forthcoming book's jacket suggests Morton has taken a sympathetic view of his subject, painting her as a latter-day Hester Prynne. ``This book exists because the Monica I came to know has no relation to the image projected by the Starr report and the mass media,'' Morton writes. ``The Monica I discovered is a bright, lively and witty young woman who bears the scars of her continuing public shaming but remains undefeated.'' NBC correspondent Lisa Myers got the first on-the-record interview with the woman last month, but NBC News President Andrew Lack and his top deputies have yet to run the story, maintaining that the network lacks sufficient corroboration of the woman's allegations. Yesterday, the accusations exploded into public view when Dorothy Rabinowitz, a Wall Street Journal editorial board member, published her own account of a lengthy interview she had with the woman, Juanita Broaddrick. But NBC is still holding back its taped interview. "There are moments in your life when you know . . . you know this is not a story that should be suppressed," Rabinowitz said yesterday. Broaddrick, she said, "is wealthy. There's no motive to lie. She's done nothing but hide from the press." The differing approaches reflect the struggle of a number of news organizations, including The Washington Post, to deal with a delicate, long-ago allegation that could have affected the president's impeachment trial had it been carried in the mainstream press. What made this period extraordinary was that millions of people knew, largely through the Internet, the general outlines of Broaddrick's allegation. Several NBC sources said Myers and her Washington bureau chief, Tim Russert, were frustrated by their inability to get the story on the air. They and other advocates believe that each time they came up with further corroboration, NBC management raises the evidentiary bar a little higher. They also feel badly about winning Broaddrick's trust, combing through her records and disrupting her life, only to keep holding the story, these sources said. Myers, who has pursued Broaddrick for a year, would say only that the story "remains a work in progress. We learn something new every day." An NBC executive said that "there are some serious aspects of it that are still unable to be confirmed." But Broaddrick eventually grew frustrated and agreed to talk to the Journal. "I feel so betrayed by NBC," Broaddrick said yesterday. Her son, Kevin Hickey, said Myers had assured them after the taping that there was no chance the interview would not run as scheduled on Jan. 29. -Caveat Lector- From Associated Press Friday February 19 11:48 AM ET Syrian Paper Decries Israel Action DAMASCUS, Syria (AP) - Israel's seizure of a village in southern Lebanon was ``an aggressive step'' that could raise tension in the Middle East, a Syrian government newspaper said Friday. Israel seized the village of Arnoun late Wednesday on the edge of the border strip it occupies in southern Lebanon, claiming that it wanted to expand its self-styled ``security zone.'' Israeli soldiers and allied Lebanese militiamen - escorted by bulldozers, trucks and jeeps - set up a barbed-wire fence around the village to prevent people from coming or going without permission. Israel has said Arnoun was used by Lebanese guerrillas as a launching pad for attacks on the Israeli outposts. The Syrian newspaper Al-Thawra, which reflects official government thinking, criticized the seizure of Arnoun. ``Israel has pushed tension in south Lebanon to a climax and left the door open to aggravating tension to the point of an explosion,'' the newspaper said. The seizure ``will put an end to any talk about a just and comprehensive peace process,'' it said in the editorial. Syria, which maintains 30,000 troops in Lebanon, considers the country its strategic preserve. Arnoun once had a population of about 2,000. But most residents fled after repeated artillery attacks by Israeli gunners aimed at avenging guerrilla assaults on their Beaufort Castle outpost. Last month, Israeli troops demolished 14 houses in Arnoun after an Israeli soldier was wounded nearby. Most of the attacks on the Israelis are launched by Hezbollah, a Shiite Muslim group that has led a guerrilla war for more than a decade to dislodge the Israeli troops from the zone. Meanwhile, the Israeli occupation forces positioned in al-Shaqelf castle opened fire on several press correspondents who tried to enter Arnoun city. For their part, Lebanese government representatives joint the people of Arnoun on Friday in protest against the Israeli sealing off of their town a day earlier. Israel and its proxy SLA Militia effectively annexed Arnoun to their occupation Zone in South Lebanon on Thursday by installing barbed wire and land-mines to prevent access from the rest of Lebanon. Lebanese Minister of Public works and Transport Najib Meqati led a group to the edge Arnoun and talked to the few old people waiting beyond the barbed wire. Miqati said I came here on behalf of the Lebanese President and government. We are doing our best to free Arnoun from the Israeli jail." Old women and children behind the wires wept, demanding the restoration of access to their village. One Lebanese woman from the village said members of the International Red Cross Committee had entered earlier on Friday to bring bread and medicine. Lebanese state officials and representatives of political parties joined the protest in the village of Kafer Tabneet, which overlook Arnoun on the edge of the Israeli-occupied 15-km deep occupation strip of Lebanon. The action by Israeli and SLA militia had forced residents of the largely depopulated village to enter and exit through a checkpoint Kafer Tabneet, one of the handful of places where one is allowed to move between the occupied area and the rest of Lebanon. Furthermore, the head of the Foreign affairs committee at the Lebanese parliament A]Khalil, called for convening an emergency session on Saturday (Today) to discuss Israel's annexation of Arnoun town to the occupied Zone of South Lebanon seized by Israel. In a statement on Friday, the Lebanese parliament member stressed the need of lodging an urgent complaint to the UN Security Council in order to debate Israel's new aggression which he described as a very grave event. Another Lebanese Parliament member Butrous Harb condemned the new Israeli crime which "unveiled the bellicose intentions of rulers of Tel Aviv and their false allegations about peace." Meantime, the chief of the Supreme Islamic Shiite Council I Sheikh Muhammad Mahdi Shams Eddine called for " repelling the new Israeli aggression by escalating acts of resistance against the occupation troops." He called on the Lebanese government to lodge a complaint to the UN Security council in this regard. Sam Smith's online newspaper the Progressive Review has some disturbing news for those now lionizing one of the House trial managers whose star shone so brightly during the impeachment trial debacle. It's a little background on Arkansas Rep. Asa Hutchinson. And it comes on the heels of Saturday's St. Petersburg Times report, which noted that, "Hutchinson beat back attempts by (Lindsey) Graham and (James) Rogan to expand the investigation into charges of intimidation against women who had come forward with stories damaging to Clinton." The women in question were alleged Clinton assault victims Juanita Broaddrick and Kathleen Willey. Smith reports: Among the 13 House impeachment trial managers was a Republican from Arkansas: Asa Hutchinson. This is not the first time that Hutchinson has showed up in W.J. Clinton's life. As mentioned here last month, he was the prosecutor who let Roger Clinton cop a plea on drug charges despite Roger's ties to the Dixie Mafia and the Medillin cartel. Roger Clinton was 'one tentacle of cocaine distribution in Arkansas,' said US attorney Hutchinson at the time, but thanks to the deal, the case fell apart. "We had a lot more than Roger . . .' one officer told Clinton biographer Roger Morris. 'But Roger [Clinton] cops out, our narcs get taken out, and the case stops there." Morris also noted that Hutchinson was on the scene when people began to get too nosy about what was going on at Mena: "Though the Reagan-appointed US attorneys for the region at the time, Asa Hutchinson and J. Michael Fitzhugh, repeatedly denied, as Fitzhugh put it, 'any pressure in any investigation,' [key investigators] Duncan and Welch watched the Mena inquiry systematically quashed and their own careers destroyed as the IRS and state police effectively dissolved their investigations and turned on them. 'Somebody outside ordered it shut down,' one would say, 'and the walls went up.'" Now comes Arkansas Times columnist Mara Leveritt with another memoir of the ubiquitous Mr. Hutchinson: "Having listened to Hutchinson expound repeatedly on his desire only to get at 'the truth' of the Clinton-Lewinsky affair, I am struck by how remarkably unaggressive he was -- in fact, how surprisingly hands-off he was -- back in the 1980s when, as the U.S. attorney for western Arkansas, Hutchinson had the chance to prosecute [Barry] Seal, the smuggler. " Former IRS agent William Duncan has testified that Hutchinson, who was among the first to know of Seal's arrival in Arkansas, called a meeting in early 1983, at which Duncan was assigned to investigate Seal's suspected money laundering. Duncan did, and he tried to have members of Seal's gang indicted. But when the IRS investigator asked Hutchinson to subpoena 20 witnesses who were prepared to testify about the alleged drug-trafficking at Mena, Hutchinson balked. Only three of the 20 were called, and of those, two later complained that they had not been allowed to present their evidence to the federal grand jury. The grand jury never indicted Seal or anyone else involved with him at Mena. "Since then, I have spoken with Paul Whitmore, a former Chief of Criminal Investigation for the IRS, who was Duncan's superior. He oversaw the Seal investigation and concurs with Duncan's assessment that presentation of Duncan's evidence was blocked by Hutchinson's office. At the time, and to this day, however, Hutchinson has cast himself as an anti-drug crusader." -Caveat Lector- A more official representation of the Turkish point of view of the Kurdish situation From www.turkey.org (Policy Politics) Human Rights in Turkey Terrorism As A Violation of Human Rights A widely agreed definition of terrorism states that: "terrorism is the use or the threat of the use of violence, a method of combat, or a strategy to achieve certain targets, that it aims to induce a state of fear in the victim, that it is ruthless and does not conform with humanitarian rules, and that publicity is an essential factor in the terrorist strategy". Within the framework of existing human rights law, the understanding of this subject adopted by the international community in general, and by some human rights circles (such as NGOs) in particular, resulted-unfortunately, until a few years ago- in exclusively monitoring human rights violations allegedly committed by the state in their combat against terrorists. Neglecting to monitor the terrorist combat methods employed by those terrorists responsible for killing thousands of innocent civilians as well as their terrorist acts presented perverted picture of the states. Such a picture portrays the states, though they are combating terrorism in all its forms, as committing unilaterally and almost without reason or provocation, all sorts of violations in breach of the rule of law. Obviously, this picture certainly served the purposes of the terrorists to influence world public opinion. The international community felt the ever increasing urgency to prevent and combat terrorism. Turkey, as a country suffering from the deplorable effects of terrorism, greatly has contributed to this effort. Article 30 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights treats states, groups and persons on an equal footing when their acts or activities aim at destroying the rights set forth in the Declaration. Following a reinterpretation of this article, terrorism was considered and admitted within the realm of human rights violations in the Vienna Declaration, adopted at the World Conference on Human Rights. This understanding has been reiterated in several other resolutions adopted by UN bodies and other international organizations. Finally, the resolutions on "Human Rights and Terrorism" adopted by the UN General Assembly on December 23, 1994 (49/185) and on December 22, 1995 (50/186) reiterated grave concern over the gross violations of human rights perpetrated by terrorist groups and the increasing number of innocent and maimed by terrorists in indiscriminate and random acts of violence and terror. Thus, it called upon the states to take all necessary and effective measures, in accordance with the international standards of human rights, to prevent, combat and eliminate all acts of terrorism wherever and by whomever committed. A SPECIFIC CASE: PKK TERRORISM IN TURKEY The most notorious terror organization that Turkey has to deal with is the PKK, the Kurdistan Workers Party. It has declared its objectives on numerous occasions. These objectives can be summarized as a quest for an independent Kurdish state built on Marxist-Leninist principles. The territory of such a state would be gained bys the secession of southeastern and eastern Anatolia from Turkey. The method adopted by the PKK in order to impose its views and aspirations is based on murder and destruction. The PKK kills civilians. It kills civilians because they don't belong to their group. It kills Kurds because they have to be intimidated and subjugated into acceptance of the PKK's views and demands. Not only does it kill people, but it also attacks civilian targets in order to make the region unlivable for those who remain alive. The PKK also destroys schools, sets forests on fire, blows up railways and bridges, plants mines on roads, burns construction machinery and demolishes health centers. Obviously, such an enterprise requires colossal financial resources. The PKK obtains this financing mainly through drug trafficking, the extortion of money inside and outside Turkey, and other illegal ways and means. Economic Development: The Best Tool Against Terrorism The Turkish Government has always believed that the best tool in the efforts against terrorism is economic development. It is no coincidence that the region in which the PKK operates is also the most economically underdeveloped part of Turkey. Whatever support the PKK has is a result of the lack of economic opportunities there; the Government is determined to reverse that. In 1994, the Government allocated TL 5.6 trillion (approximately $186 million) economic aid and development program for ten southeast provinces that includes agricultural and housing projects. The agricultural programme will encourage farmers to shift to more suitable crops and will develop intensive farming projects. In 1995, the Government allocated TL 2.8 trillion (approximately $47 million) for infrastructure projects and TL 288 billion (approximately $4.8 million)

Iridium Upstages the Stars by Joanna Glasner 3:00 a.m. 19.Feb.99.PST -- More than 40 years ago, Americans squinted into the night sky to watch the faint glimmer of Sputnik track slowly overhead. Today's amateur astronomers don't need to look quite so hard to spot this year's model. "They can be bright enough that, for a moment, you can think that you're looking at a landing light head on," said Brian Hunter, an amateur astronomer and chemistry professor at Queens University in Kingston, Ontario. The brilliant flares -- which can last up to 20 seconds -- are caused by sunlight reflecting off one or more of the three flat-panel antennae attached to each of the 66 Iridium satellites. When the sun hits an antennae at just the right angle, the flares can brighten to an intensity that outshines everything else in the night sky. Hunter may have been the first to identify one of the flashes as an Iridium satellite in August 1997. He had actually been trying to pinpoint an Iridium bird when he saw a very bright object in the sky and traced it back to the star grouping where the satellite was supposed to be. "I made the connection very quickly," he said. News spread, and soon sky watchers were swapping email accounts of their sightings. A few satellite watchers created programs and set up Web sites to predict the flares. Jeff Hunt has a few photographs of orbiting Iridiums casting a vaguely UFO- like flash across sky on pages he updates for the Visual Satellite Observers Home Page. When sunlight hitting the main antenna on a satellite bounces directly to an observer on Earth, Hunt says, the reflection can be 30 times brighter than Venus. Without the flare effect, Iridium satellites look like faint dots moving quickly across a backdrop of stars and planets. Occasionally other orbiting craft, such as the Hubble Space Telescope, the Mir space station, and the Compton Gamma-Ray Observatory also give off flares, said Ed Cannon, who runs a Web page for satellite observers from the University of Texas. It's rare, however, for anything up there to shine as brightly as the brightest Iridium flares, he said. But not everyone is tickled by Iridium's light show. Some astronomers say the flares can mar their ability to see other objects in space, particularly in time-exposure photographs. They see the lights as a kind of "space pollution." But the greater concern in the scientific community has nothing to do with the flares, said Travis Rector, a staff scientist as Kitt Peak National Observatory in Tucson, Arizona. Radio astronomers who use telescopes that track radio waves of objects in space have been more affected by interference from satellites, he said. Iridium has been working with a number of observatories and has reached agreements with some for minimizing interference. But with the number of orbiting networks on the rise, radio astronomers' troubles could worsen. Iridium is the first of several planned global satellite-communications networks. The system relies on a network of satellites that belt the planet 485 miles above the Earth. The networks will provide phone and other high- speed communications services. In the meantime, a number of other satellite networks, such as GlobalStar and Tachyon, are getting off the ground. And while satellite observers can look forward to a wealth of new floating objects, some astronomers are concerned about the threat of celestial pollution. "As space becomes more crowded, these satellites can just get in the way," Rector said. We figure that about 2 percent of the mail we get is now carrying the Happy99.exe worm and we'd like to get that figure back to zero percent. If you have recently run a program that displays fireworks in a small window that says "Happy New Year 1999", most likely your computer has this worm. First, let's get rid of that program and then we'll tell you more about it. NOTE: As far as we know, this worm ONLY affects Windows 95/98/NT users. Windows 3.1, Macintosh and other operating systems are apparently not affected. INSTRUCTIONS 1. Print out these instructions. 2. Click Start | Shut Down | "Restart Computer in MS-DOS mode" 3. -Caveat Lector- This is not me - I am forwarded something from another list. Laura aka The Pied Piper I live about 20-25 miles from where the explosion was. My husband was home and I was out. I came home only a few minutes after it happened to find him on the front porch with the dog. I thought he locked himself out. He said he was outside trying to see what hit the house! He said he was sure something had to have hit the house because the house shook and the shockwave went right through him. We went inside and a short while later we heard about it on the news. I did not notice any smells in the air today, so I am hoping there was no large chemical release to the surrounding area. I looked up the chemicals that were mentioned in the article, and both are hazardous. So why did TPTB say they were *harmless*? Gray Davis to ban the gasoline additive that has caused the closure of dozens of drinking water supply systems throughout the state. Methyl tertiary butyl ether (MTBE) was first introduced into Californians' gas tanks in the early and mid-1990s in an effort to lower car emissions and reduce air pollution. But since its introduction in the state, more than 10,000 wells, lakes and reservoirs have been polluted with the substance. Sen. Tim Leslie, R-Tahoe City, along with his colleagues, Sen. Dick Mountjoy, R-Arcadia, Sen. Don Perata, D-East Bay, and others will be meeting on the south steps of the state Capitol next Tuesday to rally for an immediate ban of MTBE. All three senators are currently carrying legislation to make MTBE use unlawful in California. Leslie's legislation, Senate Bill 272, says, in part, it would "make it a misdemeanor for any person to sell gasoline containing MTBE." It also makes the following statements about MTBE: MTBE is highly soluble in water and will transfer readily to groundwater. MTBE is capable of contaminating water resources faster than any other gasoline component and has been detected in California's drinking water wells, groundwater, and surface water. It is clear that California is placing its limited water resources at risk by using MTBE in gasoline. MTBE is an animal carcinogen with the potential to cause cancer in humans. MTBE jeopardizes the safety and availability of California's water supply and is clearly a public health threat. The cost of treating MTBE-contaminated drinking water sources in California could have a severe impact on state funds. Leslie's bill also states that studies have shown that no significant air quality benefit has been found in the use of MTBE. "A recent University of California study concluded that MTBE provides no significant benefit to air quality yet has the potential to cause great harm to our state's water supply," said Leslie. "Common sense dictates that we take immediate and necessary measures to protect the quality of our state's drinking water and the health of Californians. MTBE must go." The study being referred to is one the University of California was directed to conduct after former California Gov. Pete Wilson signed into law Mountjoy's Senate Bill 521 Oct. 8, 1997. This bill enacted the MTBE Public Health and Environmental Protection Act of 1997. Leslie said that next week's rally will also coincide with a public hearing at the Sacramento Convention Center where the California Environmental Protection Agency will hear testimony pertaining to MTBE. The state's governor must decide whether or not to prohibit MTBE use in California within 10 days of the public hearing. Currently, the governor has no official position on the issue. It is Leslie's hope that the rally and the public hearing will encourage the governor to ban, or phase out, MTBE. If he doesn't, Leslie and others plan to move forward with their bills to ban the substance. "Kick MTBE out of California, and do it now!" exclaimed Leslie. Besides California, other states -- including Connecticut, Maine, New Hampshire and New York -- have proposed legislation that would ban MTBE. In Alaska and part of Montana, MTBE has already been banned due to motorists' complaints of health problems including sore throats, nausea and trouble with breathing. North Carolina also banned MTBE, but the state's action was due to the additive's classification as a probable carcinogen in people. Besides being detected in the California water supply, MTBE has also been found in 137 water supplies across New Hampshire, dozens of wells in Connecticut and various other water supplies across the U.S. In Texas, for example, some state and local officials are concerned that MTBE pollution in their state's water supply may force them to shut down some of the water wells in their state. BY MICHAEL DORGAN Mercury News Staff Writer WASHINGTON -- A classified congressional report detailing Chinese espionage in the United States has put the nation's computer industry on a collision course with Congress. Release of the report, scheduled for next month, appears certain to trigger a high-stakes showdown over export controls involving billions of dollars in potential corporate earnings as well as allegations that high-technology executives have sacrificed the nation's security in pursuit of profits. ``I believe we are in for a very, very difficult time,'' Rep. Tom Campbell, R-Campbell, said of his Silicon Valley district, the world's leading source of high technology. ``I'm saying this is the most difficult time in my 11 years in public life regarding the export of high technology to China in specific and to other countries considered unreliable.'' Campbell, a strong supporter of his district's high-tech industry, says the mood of his congressional colleagues is such that current regulations controlling technology exports are likely to be tightened in coming months. That would be devastating news to computer companies, some of which export half of their production and almost all of which complain that current controls already are unreasonably restrictive. ``Our biggest concern is what happens to us later this year and next year and beyond with the existing set of controls, forget about any rollbacks,'' said Dan Hoydysh, chairman of the Computer Coalition for Responsible Exports, a lobbying group representing some of the nation's leading computer companies, including Compaq, Dell, Hewlett-Packard, IBM, Intel and Unisys. ``Even if rollbacks are not enacted, the existing system will bring us into crisis for getting approvals (for exports).'' Under current regulations, he noted, any computer with merely a pair of the new Intel Pentium III chips would be powerful enough to require a license if sold to such ``tier 3'' countries as India, Israel, Pakistan, Russia or to the world's fastest-growing computer market, China. Computer executives, and some U.S. government officials, say a denial of easy access to those emerging markets would cripple the global competitiveness of U.S. companies while boosting the growth of foreign companies. The result, they say, would be a weakened national security because the U.S. defense industry depends on this country's leading-edge technology companies to keep America's weapons systems more advanced than any potential enemy's. ``Exports equal healthy high-tech companies equal a strong defense,'' Undersecretary of Commerce William Reinsch, head of the department's export bureau, told a group of Mercury News editors and reporters during a recent visit to Silicon Valley to warn high-tech officials that the future growth of their companies could be sharply curtailed. Reinsch's equation may sound like basic math to the high-tech community, but it increasingly has been challenged by some within Congress and the Defense Department. They say making advanced technology easily accessible to potential adversaries diminishes the margin of technical superiority needed to deter conflict or win a decisive victory. Export restrictions Controls relaxed after the end of Cold War During the Cold War, even computers puny by today's standards were strictly banned for export to countries deemed unfriendly. But following the collapse of the Soviet Union, the multinational commission that regulated technology exports was scrapped. Then, under former Defense Secretary William Perry, a Stanford University engineering professor and defense technology specialist, export controls were greatly loosened to allow U.S. high technology to flow freely into foreign markets. Peter Leitner, a senior official in the Defense Department's Threat Reduction Agency, says many high-tech companies have shown ``reckless disregard'' for national security in their pursuit of those markets. He says high-tech executives are often blindered by greed and ambition, and can be dangerously naive when it comes to assessing threats posed by their technology. ``They have a self-serving and distorted view,'' he said in an interview. Campaign Kashiwa Shobo Publishing Co. was to release the Japanese translation of "The Rape of Nanjing" by Chinese-American author Iris Chang in late February but "decided to put off the plan," the official said. She declined to give any reason. News reports said the publisher postponed the release indefinitely because talks with the author on how to issue the Japanese version amid a backlash from right-wingers had become bogged down. The book, which sold 500,000 copies in the United States, has inflamed revisionists here who say they can find no evidence of a massacre of Chinese civilians by Japanese troops in December 1937 in Nanjing. China says 300,000 civilians were massacred when Japanese troops embarked on an orgy of destruction, pillage, rape and murder after taking Nanjing. Allied trials of Japanese war criminals documented 140,000 victims. Some Japanese publications questioned the validity of more than 10 pictures used in the book last year and the publisher received threatening telephone calls and letters, the Asahi Shimbun said. The publisher early this month received a letter from a man who claimed to be a rightist saying: "I will take some action if you publish the book." Chang agreed to correct some 10 mistakes in the book, including wrong names, but turned down Kashiwa Shobo's proposal for the Japanese version to include notes and comments, the newspaper said. The firm also sought simultaneously to issue a separate book compiled from Japanese studies on the incident and monthly magazine articles critical of Chang's work. It also wanted to translate the critique into English. Miss Lewinsky was believed to be giving her first television interview on her affair with Mr Clinton to the reporter Barbara Walters yesterday. It is to be broadcast shortly to coincide with the publication of Miss Lewinsky's biography, written with the British writer Andrew Morton. Miss Walters is understood to be negotiating with Juanita Broaddrick, 55, who is behind the most serious sexual allegation levelled at Mr Clinton in the past year. Tiggre These days, you can hardly log on to the Internet without getting some alert or call to action forwarded by a friend, warning you of some dastardly plot by the Bad Guys. Often these are chain letters that are nothing more than scams created to waste the time of the gullible. Even more often they are genuine, but all the efforts of the well-intentioned come to naught, and the new regulation, tax, rights violationwhatevergoes into effect anyway. However, with Big Brothers latest attempts to seize yet more power through unabashed snooping on everyones bank records, we may be seeing a change in the tide of futility. It started on December 7 (Pearl Harbor Day), 1998, when the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation (FDIC) "joined other federal banking agencies in issuing for public comment proposals that would require banks and savings institutions to have policies and procedures in place for screening transactions that may be tied to money laundering, drug trafficking or other criminal activities." Word of the proposed regulation, called "Know Your Customer", was immediately flashed around the Internet, causing great dismay, even among people not normally politically inclined. The Know Your Customer rule (12 CFR 326) basically would turn all banks in the United States into unpaid informants for the IRS and a whole slate of federal and state law enforcement agencies. The banks would have to create, at their own expense, systems for monitoring all transactions of all of their customers, and report anomalous transactions to authorities. The given reason for the regulation are laws aimed at preventing the laundering of money earned through illegal enterprises. The upshot is that Joe Blow Taxpayer, who deposits his paycheck regularly and tries hard not to break any laws, can receive a modest inheritance and find himself at the center of an automated investigation. Or Josephine Blow, who takes a vacation in Vegas and deposits a modest amount of cash winnings in her bank account upon her return, can find herself being questioned by the FBI. Or kindly old Mrs. Goodneighbor, who withdraws a large amount of cash from her bank to pay a contractor to fix the corner of her house where a tree fell on it during the last storm, may get a call from her friendly neighborhood IRS agent. It wouldnt even take a human to start the investigation, and it could happen to absolutely anyone. According to the FDIC, "The proposed regulation is intended to help protect the integrity and reputation of the financial services industry and assist the government in its efforts to combat money laundering and other illegal activities that may be occurring through financial institutions. It is intended to detect patterns of illegal activity often characterized by large cash deposits and withdrawals that are outside the normal and expected activity." Somehow, it just doesnt seem that bankers have been having trouble sleeping night, worrying about what their customers might think if a drug dealer "laundered" his or her money in their banks. Declan McCullagh, of Wired and other magazines, reports that banks would send their reports to "the Suspicious Activity Reporting System [see FinCEN Advisory, Issue 8], a mammoth searchable database jointly administered by the IRS and FinCEN that went online in April 1996. Over a dozen agenciesincluding the FBI, IRS, Secret Service, bank regulators, and state law enforcementshare access to the data." It makes a lot more sense to suspect that overzealous law enforcement officers, the friendly kind who want to read everyones e-mail and put TV cameras at every traffic intersection, are just trying to bring the United States one step closer to the Orwellian nightmare that is their wet dream, than to think that bankers want their reputations protected. It is not much comfort when the FDIC says: "It should not affect, in any way, the vast majority of individual customers whose accounts are funded by payroll or other similar types of recurring deposits. Financial institutions are cautioned to avoid invading the privacy of customers by safeguarding and handling their financial information responsibly." Yeah. Right. Its not the bankers people are worried about (though nobody likes having nosy bankers sniff through their every transaction either). No wonder a huge number of bankers have objected to the new regulations; they get to take the heat for snooping on their customers, and have to foot the bill for the privilege. Supposedly, we were all capitalists now. But this is clearly not the case. The world's political leaders show no signs of a commitment to capitalism, if by that term we mean truly free markets and individual liberty. On the contrary, President Clinton and his colleagues are embarked on a course of global economic intervention such as has never before been attempted. The economic woes in Asia and Latin America are the pretext for this power grab. But make no mistake about it: the control of our economic activities contemplated by the bureaucrats has long been on the political agenda. These folks have never been comfortable with free markets and have yearned for the elusive "third way" between capitalism and full socialism. The current global downturn gives them the opportunity to realize their long-held ambition -- egged on by the usual gang of anticapitalist intellectuals who absurdly blame today's economic problems on "market worship." (Such as recent newspaper blather from Robert Kuttner and William Greider.) Let's take a moment to consider this concept, "the third way." It is not widely recalled that the third way had another name in the 1920s and 1930s: fascism. Its exemplar was Benito Mussolini's Italy. Before this word became merely an all-purpose insult, it functioned as a label for what was seen as a legitimate middle course between revolutionary Marxian socialism, which promised violent upheaval of the established social order, and laissez-faire capitalism, which was believed to be intrinsically unstable and biased against labor. The Marxists and their sympathizers portrayed the liberal defenders of private property, such as Ludwig von Mises, as fascists, but that was laughable. The fascists had their roots in a variation of socialism known in Bismarck's Germany as state socialism. This conservative variation of collectivism maintained a façade of private property in the means of production. But it was just that, a façade. In many respects, government set the terms of use of that property so that it would serve the state's rather than the individual's purposes. That principle underlay the program of Mussolini, who, it should be born in mind, had been a Marxian socialist before World War I. State socialism, or fascism, was long in the air when an obscure Austrian artist formed a small political party in Germany and devised a program to govern that outcast nation. Unsurprisingly, Adolf Hitler called his program National Socialism, of which the word "Nazi" is a shortened form. Hitler set forth his position on private property clearly in 1931: What matters is to emphasize the fundamental idea in my party's economic program clearly -- the idea of authority. I want the authority; I want everyone to keep the property he has acquired for himself according to the principle: benefit to the community precedes benefit to the individual. But the state should retain supervision and each property owner should consider himself appointed by the state. It is his duty not to use his property against the interests of others among his own people. This is the crucial matter. The Third Reich will always retain its right to control the owners of property. Does this not describe the economic position of Bill Clinton and virtually any other political leader worldwide you can name? They may not put it in quite such terms. But it is exactly on point. They act as though the owners of property are appointed by the state and serve at its pleasure. Is Bill Clinton not acting as though Bill Gates was appointed by the state to run Microsoft? Restrictions on Capital Movements If you want to see this Hitlerian doctrine in action, observe: In early October 1998, President Clinton led 20 other countries in endorsing new restrictions on the international movement of capital. This is a typical case of blaming the thermometer for the fever. The premise of the new restrictions is that the sudden withdrawal of capital from a particular country's stock or bond market wreaks economic havoc in that country. But this reasoning reverses cause and effect. Capital flees a country to avoid real or impending havoc, which occurs when government pursues irrational economic policies, such as monetary inflation, credit expansion, confiscation, regulation, and subsidy. The policies, not the capital exodus, are to blame. Why would investors take money out of a country that had a sound economy? A free worldwide capital market is a vital check on a governments ability to enact bad policies. The agreement to

While it can be argued that freedom was limited among certain classes of people at this countrys inception, most individuals agree that in recent years our freedoms have been greatly encroached upon, and with increasing speed. Also, many have lamented the "lack of heroes" for todays youth, which presumably stems in part from the rarity of courage and character. Or, as its expressed today, it is unusual to find someone who "walks the walk". Unfortunately, this "hero" problem exists among those who fancy themselves "freedom fighters" as well. Consider the number of web sites which have all kinds of information and ideas related to freedom; then consider the number of sitesand individualswho are actively doing something to promote freedom. Many talk the talk, but few, it seems, walk the walk. Dont misunderstand meeducating people is a very important aspect of disseminating our ideas. Still, its much easier for the majority of individuals to talk about freedom than it is to do freedom. Peter McWilliams is not one of those individuals. You may recognize his name; hes the author of Aint Nobodys Business If You Do: The Absurdity of Consensual Crimes in a Free Society (Prelude Press, 1992), as well as many other books. This book is perhaps the most thorough extant exploration of the history and cost of consensual crime, and has opened many minds to the ideas of libertarianism. That in and of itself is doing freedom, but McWilliams has gone far beyond writing about these ideas. Peter McWilliams is engaged in a fight for his life. Because of that fight, hes been drawn into battle with the DEA and IRS. Its ironic that hes being harassed in much the same way as he described in Aint Nobodys Business If You Do. In March of 1996, McWilliams was diagnosed with cancer and AIDS. Frequent side effects of treatment for each are nausea and loss of appetite. Prior to his illnesses, McWilliams had been a supporter of ones right to put whatever substance one desired into ones own body on principle. Only after no other antinausea medications proved effective for him, he tried medicinal marijuana on his doctors recommendation. Once McWilliams experienced firsthand the dramatic difference it could make, he became an ardent supporter of the medicinal marijuana movement. For that support, McWilliams drew the interest of various federal government agencies. He placed a paid advertisement in the December 1, 1997 issue of Daily Variety, in which he discussed what he calls the "Hollywood anti-drug blacklist." He criticized the DEAs abuse of power, including its threat to investigate the creative staff of Murphy Brown for an episode in which Murphy smokes marijuana for relief of chemotherapy-induced nausea. (Yes, writing fiction is now sufficient to make one a target, if it has a realistic drug message!) On December 17, 1997, DEA and IRS agents executed a search warrant on McWilliams home, another residence he owns, and his business. He was told only that the search was part of an "ongoing investigation". They found marijuanaan amount within the legal limit in Californiabut still seized the computer he was using to research and store a book manuscript on medicinal marijuana. Undeterred, McWilliams continued his activism. Realizing that hed become a target for the Feds, he had his lawyer send a letter to the DEA stating that McWilliams expected to be arrested again, and all they needed to do was tell him when and where to appear for his arraignment. Despite this, DEA agents showed up at dawn, and arrested and jailed Peter McWilliams on July 23, 1998, indicting him and eight others on "federal medical marijuana violations". His bond was originally set at a ridiculous $250,000 property bond, later changed so that cash was accepted against it as well. While he was jailedover a monthhe did not receive his prescribed "medical cocktail" for his AIDS and cancer regularly, nor did he receive medicinal marijuana for his nausea. A condition of McWilliams release is drug testing, which means that he cannot use marijuana to relieve his nausea. Other medications arent effective for him, and his health has suffered as a result. In a recent communication, McWilliams summed up his situation: "It has been lonely these past six months since my release. My illness prevents me from creating, which is my true passion. What little productive time I have each day is spent preparing for my defense or fending off creditors. I cannot have visitors. I do not go out. (Germs, you know. A flu could kill me.) The panelists derided Aldrichs claims that security had broken down in the Clinton White House. After the show, ABC and other networks canceled their remaining interviews with Aldrich. Elizabeth Vargas rounded out the media attack, stating on "Good Morning America" that Aldrich was under fire for "what appears to be sloppy reporting." [1] George Stephanopoulos, a senior adviser to the President, had attempted before the program to convince ABC to cancel its invitation to Aldrich. He accused Aldrich of being a "tool" in a right-wing plot "to destroy" the President. He said that Bob Dole, Clintons opponent in the 1996 presidential election, had "a responsibility to repudiate him or he is complicit in this campaign of character assassination". Aldrichs claims, according to Stephanopoulos, were "vicious", "totally preposterous", "absurd" and "outrageous". [2] Now, two-and-a-half years later, any reasonably informed person knows who is guilty of "sloppy reporting" and who is "vicious", "totally preposterous", "absurd", and "outrageous". On January 12 of this year Ms. Vargas interviewed Larry Flynt on "Good Morning America." She allowed him to air charges against Congressman Bob Barr, pausing only momentarily to note that it "might be a stretch" to imagine that Flynt was a White House tool. [3] Stephanopoulos, for his part, has been sanctioned by a federal judge for not telling the truth in a deposition to Judicial Watch. [4] Vindication is sweet. On February 16, one day after Linda Tripp corroborated his allegations on a nationwide broadcast of Larry King Live, Aldrich spoke to a packed house at Eureka College, Ronald Reagans alma mater. Before his presentation, Aldrich granted the following exclusive interview to The Laissez Faire City Times. In your book you say that William Kennedy was in charge of dismantling the White House security system. What made you believe that? Aldrich: Well, that was the conclusion we drew after the many times we brought significant problems with security to him, and each time he found a reason not to do anything about them. By we I mean the FBI, the Secret Service and permanent staff members who had an interest in security. The next question would be why he did this. The answer is the administration wanted the security system dismantled because otherwise their friends and associates, and the people they were choosing to work for them, would not have been able to gain access to the White House. One of the most under-reported aspects of your book concerns breaches of national security that took place in the White House. Do you have any information that White House employees took classified materials from the White House? Aldrich: No, I dont. If I did, I would feel obligated to see to it that those documents were promptly returned, and I would not rest until that happened. That is not to say that White House employees did not compromise national security on a daily basis. They did, and they probably still do. One way they did that is by allowing access to people who would never qualify for clearance under any reasonable security system. They also used ordinary analog cell phones to have conversations with outsiders, both from the White House and from Air Force One. These conversations were not on scrambled phones, and the conversations touched on classified information. There are secure phones available for that very purpose. Even the President had conversations over ordinary phones with Monica Lewinsky, and he talked with Dick Morris about serious national security issues. Personnel also left documents on desktops in unlocked offices, with no regard for the security of that material. What is the likelihood that some foreign intelligence agency either attempted to or successfully recorded those conversations? Aldrich: High or higher. It is virtually certain that hostile intelligence agencies recorded all the insecure conversations. In Washington D.C. there is a nonstop attempt to grab and analyze all calls that are not made from scrambled telephones. Everybody in town knows this. You state in your book that Vince Foster did not want the Secret Service to have access to his FBI background check. How do you know that? Aldrich: It was the pattern of conduct on the part of Foster and others. Foster had some conversations with staff members, which have been reported to the oversight committees, in which he indicated that. He asked me questions about the distribution of

A "legend" is a cover story concocted by the CIA to cover-up US state-sanctioned criminality. During the Korean War, CIA operative Colonel Edward Hunter created the "legend" that US airmen were "brainwashed" by the Red Chinese to make false confessions about engaging in germ warfare. "The popularization of the idea that the flyers were brainwashed grew out of a widely read book of the time by Edward Hunter titled Brainwashing in Red China (1951)," write Torontos York University historians Stephen Endicott and Edward Hagerman in their fascinating book, The United States and Biological Warfare. "A few years later, after the results of a mammoth US Army study were known, the US Defense Department concluded that US POWs had not been subject to brainwashing, merely hardship, stress and duress," they continue. The CIAs disinformation campaign, however, took on a life of its own. This "legend" has become a myth of 20th century history, further enshrined in movies like The Manchurian Candidate. The CIA promoted the idea that American soldiers were coerced through mind control to confess to imaginary crimes. And the fact that they had actually engaged in "germ" warfare during the Korean War was effectively covered-up. Roosevelts Biological Warfare Program And how did US biowarfare get started? Under Roosevelt, during World War Two. "Begun with an inital grant of $250,000, modest by wartime standards, the biological warfare program quickly grew to be one of the largest wartime scientific projects in American history, second only to the Manhattan Project, which created the atomic bomb," write Endicott and Hagerman. "Granted top priority status, the program employed approximately four thousand people by the end of the war. The center of activity was the Special Projects division of the Chemical Warfare Service and its new research and development center located in Camp Detrick, Maryland," they continue. The Pentagon and its devils workshop was a busy place. "The Detrick scientists cast a wide experimental net. They studied anthrax, brucellosis (undulant fever), botulinus toxin, plague, ricin, southern blight of grains, potatoes and sugar beets (Sclerotium rolfoil), late blight, late blast, brownspot of rice, plant growth inhibitors, rinderpest, glanders and melioidosis..., tularemia (Rabbit fever), mussel poisoning, coccidioidomycosis, rickettsia, psittacosis, neurotropic encephalitis, Newcastle disease and fowl plague," write the authors. "The first to receive concentrated attention were anthrax and botulinus toxin... It also was Detricks mission to mass produce agents for operational use." Meanwhile the Detrick scientists, among them George Merck, head of the pharmaceutical giant Merck Co., was recruited by the FDR administration to head the War Research Service (WRS) Committee. However, because of internal ethical arguments by Admiral William D. Leahy and others, "there remained certain constraints in the use of biological and chemical weapons. One was the lingering fear that US and world opinion would morally condemn this extension of the limits of war. The burden of using chemical weapons was politically great because the United States had ratified the 1925 Geneva Protocol against chemical weapons. Its failure, along with Japan, to ratify the protocol banning biological weapons relieved the US from arms-limitation obligations in that direction, but it raised nagging questions about US intentions before the international community." The Lucky Accident It wasnt until 1980 that American journalist John William Powell discovered the "smoking gun" of US biological warfare. -Caveat Lector- FILM -- "WILD, WILD EAST" -- PLANNED (CNNS, 02/21/99) -- Many films have been made showing a sort of history of the U.S. between about 1865 through 1900. In fact a whole video category exists: the "Western" genre. There is, unfortunately, no similar genre for the eastern U.S. circa 1865 through 1900. The "Western" gives a sort of U.S. history, 1865-1900, for the area west of the Mississippi. Not much happened, according to these mythological history films. It all boiled down to who was fastest on the draw. As the "Western" genre of film has "developed" over the years, the astounding gunfighting expertise of certain mysterious strangers has been fetishized beyond belief. A blueprint for an "Eastern" genre of film is intuited in a short book by Murray N. Rothbard, "Wall Street, Banks, and American Foreign Policy" (Center for Libertarian Studies, 1995). Here is a sketch for a movie, based on some of the material in Rothbard's book; the movie could be titled The Wild, Wild East In Philadelphia, around 1870, lives Jay Cooke. Instead of at saloons, he hangs out at banks. Out west, desperados rob the banks. But in the wild, wild east, the banks rob the desperate. But into Philadelphia one day rides a mysterious stranger. He is a more cunning banker than even Jay Cooke. We learn that the mysterious stranger had begun his rise by selling defective rifles to the Union army during the Civil War. The mysterious stranger is "quick on the draw" in financial matters; through the lightning-fast cunning of his monetary mind, the mysterious stranger helps bankrupt Jay Cooke in the Panic of 1874. The mysterious stranger gathers a gang of financial sharp-shooters around him. He infiltrates members of his gang into the administration of U.S. president Grover Cleveland. But the mysterious stranger has a rival economic wheeler dealer who also wants control over the Cleveland administration: August Belmont, who is the "fast draw" man for the European banking house of the Rothschilds. The denouement is reached after extremely complex financial shoot-outs have occurred, shoot-outs which, unlike in the West, occur where few can witness them, at "High Midnight." It is learned that the name of the mysterious stranger is J.P. Morgan. By the 1890s, several rival gangs are on the scene, all of which have gained tremendous control over the U.S. government. A new young gunhand, John D. Rockefeller, has launched his own gang. In the final scene, we see that the situation is unsettled. He was never promoted to colonel (O6). Now, I know that a lieutenant colonel is referred to as "colonel" -- that's why a Pentagon term for lieutenant colonels is "telephone colonels." When you talk to a guy over the phone, you don't know if he is a half-colonel or a full colonel. There is a difference. James Gritz retired from the Army in 1978 after 22 years of service with the rank of lieutenant colonel. Why Is He So Well-Known Gritz's notoriety comes from four sources: His wartime exploits. Or, more accurately, his telling of his wartime exploits.His "POW rescue operations": Velvet HammerGrand Eagle, also called BOHICA (Bend Over, Here It Comes Again)LazarusLazarus OmegaOperation BrokenwingHis visit to drug warlord Kuhn Sa.His involvement in right-wing lunatic fringe politics. This article will address each of these items with most attention paid to the "POW rescue operations." What Did You Do In the War, Bo? The Medals Question Gritz's wartime exploits are near-legendary. He wears a chest full of medals. If you visit his web site (named, what else, www.bogritz.com), you will be treated to a photograph of Bo in uniform with medals dangling all over him. One would think -- and everything that Bo does encourages this belief -- that he is the most decorated soldier to come out of Vietnam. In fact, it appears that Bo may not have earned all the awards that he received. There is strong evidence that he worked the rather loosely-administered awards and decorations system to award himself most of the medals he wears. For the details of this matter, read this article: ". . . medals rained from the heavens." Recovering the Black Box One of the exploits for which Gritz is most often cited is his recovery of the black box. In 1966, while assigned to the 5th Special Forces Group, Bo led a team into Cambodia to recover a piece of sensitive material -- a "black box" -- from a crashed U-2. Gritz claims that he found the crash site but the black box was missing. He claims that the followed sandal tracks to a PAVN camp, assaulted the camp, and recovered the black box. Other members of the team say that they found the box at the crash site, picked it up and came out. No firefight. No sandal tracks. Bo's version of the story appears in General William Westmoreland's book on Vietnam, A Soldier Reports. Problem is, the book was ghost written for Westmoreland and the author stated in an interview that the version of the story in Westmoreland's book was told to him by -- you guessed it -- Gritz himself. The Mission He Never Was On Bo's fabrications caught up with him after the war. I do not recall the names but there is an incident that is well-known in the Special Forces community involving a sergeant team leader and his team. They were inserted into PAVN-controlled territory and soon found themselves surrounded, in a fight for their lives. The team leader directed his team to evacuate while he stayed behind to cover their withdrawal. He was killed covering them. Some time after the end of the war, Gritz began to tell the story with himself in it. Some of the members of the mission learned of Bo's fabrication and called his hand. I am not certain of all the details but he was tossed out of the Special Forces Association and

So, please get a few facts lined up for those of us skeptical of your reporting. Who "exactly" is this Alex Jones? Where can he be contacted? What are his credentials? What radio/TV stations or print media does he now work for, and who has he worked for in the past? Are there any quotes from Mr.Jones, or are we supposed to strictly rely on your second hand account. Again, I don't necessarily doubt that "something" happened, I just question your interpretations. Next, were there any witnesses? Was he "arrested" by MP's or local police? Exactly when did this happen? Date and time please! Where was he located at the time this happened? Inside a police barricade line? On a public street? Inside a private building? Data, please! Was he told why his tape was confiscated? Did the "MP's" have on name tags or other insignia of rank or of unit affiliation? If not, how were they identified as MP's? If there were tourists and clean-up crew in the same area, were they also harassed in any way? The reason that I am so insistent on verifiable facts is simple. If the incident actually happened as reported, we have a huge legal mess here. MP's have NO right to arrest or hold civilians for any behavior that does not occur on a military reservation, is imminently a threat to life or limb, or interferes with a specific military operation. During the last two mentioned situations, their only legal recourse is to detain the people responsible until they can be turned over to the appropriate civilian authorities. So, if Mr. Jones was stopped by Military Police for filming on public property and his tapes were confiscated, there are two possible options that could/should have happened. If legally arrested, he should have been turned over to the Corpus Christi Police department and his tapes been held by the PD as evidence of his crime. You did not state in your notice that anything like this happened. That being the case, we have a second possibility. Mr. Jones was illegally detained (kidnapping?), manhandled (assault and battery?), his equipment damaged (vandalism?), his tapes confiscated (theft?) all under color of law (impersonating a police officer?). Plus, he might have a good case for federal civil rights charges (1st Amendment free press clause). In addition, if the local PD was present and failed to intervene then we have misprision (failure to perform official duties) charges against the Police officers present. If Mr. Jones WAS arrested by Police, there will be an arrest report on file. We need to see a copy of that please. The ball is in your court, Koleshak. Provide some corroboration, evidence, or at least some suggestive facts. Or else admit the third possibility, the fact that nothing like this happened at all. House had strong connections to Wall Street, as well as to politicians and international bankers in Europe. In 1916 Wilson charged a group of specially chosen intellectuals including the Dulles brothers, and Walter Lippmann ( the "dean" of US journalism ) with the tasks of creating the peace terms for a defeated Germany, and creating a framework for a new world order, as stated in the League of Nations Covenant. Both of these endeavors were abject failures eventually resulting in the slaughter-fest known as WWII. John Foster Dulles, Allen Dulles, Christian A. Herter, were also invited by Colonel House to Paris in 1919 to meet with a group of like minded Englishmen to form organizations in their respective countries that will study international affairs. The Americans incorporated The Council On Foreign Relations in 1921. The stated purpose was to create a "positive US foreign policy" to counteract the " negative foreign policy " which was isolationism. Isolationism restricted international business and kept the US military out of very lucrative wars. THE COUNCIL -- Excerpts from - Who Rules America Now by G. By Environment Correspondent Alex Kirby Science is generally a better guide than superstition, and the message from many - though not all - scientists in the debate over genetically modified food is that they could be an enormous benefit to humanity. The Biotechnology and Biological Sciences Research Council, for instance, "rejects the arguments of those calling for a blanket moratorium". And while English Nature, the government's wildlife adviser, wants a moratorium for at least three years on certain sorts of GM crops, it also rejects any suggestion of a blanket ban. What does unite many scientists is a belief that there should be more research, and that that will take time. MINISTERIAL DIFFERENCES So why does the government insist on pushing ahead with GM foods without conceding that a pause of a few years could help everyone? The government is not in fact united. Environment Minister Michael Meacher is noticeably more cautious than some of his colleagues. One of the most combative is the Cabinet Office Minister, Dr Jack Cunningham. But he is involved in a dialogue with organic groups like the Soil Association. He has not so far changed his mind. But it would probably make little difference if he did. The driving force for pushing ahead with GM technology straight away is the Prime Minister, Tony Blair. Last year Mr Blair is reported to have had a telephone conversation with President Clinton about GMOs. [But an official source] "absolutely and categorically denies that Bill Clinton has ever raised the subject of GMOs with Tony Blair". But two [other]sources have told BBC News Online that they believe such a conversation did take place and that it led to the prime minister changing his mind on GMOs. He is now resolute in arguing that there is no need for a moratorium, or for any other policy change. And the government welcomes Monsanto and the other biotechnology firms. SAFER NOT TO YIELD But there may be another reason for it refusing to change its line. It is estimated that 60% of products on supermarket shelves already contain GM crop products. They may well be as safe as their supporters say they are, although the BSE scandal should have taught politicians that "absolutely safe" is a phrase they should never, ever use. But if the government now conceded that a moratorium was necessary, it would in effect be admitting that its confidence had been dented. Politicians say the science supports them. To an extent, it does. But the scientists are not unanimous. That is no way to restore public confidence. And a question mark remains over the government's independence of pressure from Washington. ON JULY 9, 1938, Vladimir Kositzan, one of the most active Nazi propagandists
in the United States, wrote the following code letter to Ernst Goerner of
Milwaukee, another active Nazi agent: "The seeds are on way to you. More of
the Italian and English available yet. Polish will follow later, from my
Erfurt nursery. I want to get rid of my supplies before my probable
departure."
The "Erfurt nursery" is the press in Erfurt, Germany, where World Service, a
Nazi propaganda organ, is published in various languages for distribution
throughout the world. Nazi ships smuggle this material into the United States
where secret German agents distribute it to groups, organizations and
individual propagandists. The "seeds," of course., were copies of World
Service, printed in the languages Kositzan listed. It was part of Kositzan's
work to keep Goerner supplied with propaganda material and informed of likely
prospects who would help distribute the smuggled literature. Kosit zan was a
sort of wholesaler, while Goerner was one of the numerous agents handling the
retail end.
At the top of his letter to Goerner, Kositzan typed this name and address:
"Miss B. R. Burchett, 3411 Race St., Philadelphia, Pa." and scrawled in
pencil: "Needs material. Mention me. Very active."
July, 1938, was also the period when the Reverend Charles E. Coughlin, who had
already begun disseminating Nazi propaganda issued by the Ministry of
Propaganda in Berlin, launched his extreme anti-Semitic campaign. His efforts
to arouse racial and religious hatred in this country brought immediate
protests, not only from Jews but from high dignitaries of the Catholic church
and prominent Catholic laymen. Several radio stations announced they would not
sell time to the priest unless he submitted his script for advance reading to
see if he was "bearing false witness" as former Governor 'Alfred E. Smith had
publicly charged. When Coughlin would not agree to this "censorship," the
radio stations refused to let him go on the air.
Suddenly groups to defend Coughlin popped up. They called meetings to demand
that he be given his "constitutional rights of free speech." What these groups
were and the leaders' strange tie-ups will be dealt with in this chapter. At
the moment I am interested in Bessie Burchett, formerly head of the department
of foreign languages in the South Philadelphia High School for Girls, the lady
whose name Kositzan had sent to Goerner.
Within a few weeks after the Nazi agent in Milwaukee received Kositzan's
letter, Miss Burchett was on the public platform with Nazi and Silver Shirt
leaders, demanding that Coughlin be returned to the air. Most of her talks,
delivered in an atmosphere of Hitler salutes, were vicious anti-Semitic
diatribes. At no time did she mention how she became involved in Coughlin
defense efforts or that she had received material from Nazi agents.
At about this same period a young man named Edwin Westphall, hungry-looking, a
bit shabby, and down at the heels, 'Managed to eke out an existence by
peddling razor blades to the dinner and theater crowds on Times Square in New
York. Sometimes he made a couple of dollars, but it was hard sledding. Like
most Broadway peddlers, the seedy Mr. Westphall had something quick and alert
about him and he had that gift of gab so necessary if you're going to work the
Broadway population.
Times Square, where Westphall roamed with the coming of night, was being made
a concentration point by distributors of Social Justice. Frequently a Social
Justice peddler and the hawker of razor blades found themselves side by side.
Then one day Westphall disappeared, only to pop up again in the Bronx with new
shoes and new suit, cleanshaven, spick and span--and an authority on the
Constitution and the Bill of Rights. He was indignant about the radio stations
which would not permit Father Coughlin to go on the air. The same glib tongue
that sold razor blades now sold the need of "saving America"--and Coughlin-
through the "Crusaders for Americanism," which was headed by one George A. Van
Nosdall with offices at 126 East 123rd Street, New York City.
From now on we get into a group of closely cooperating men, most of them
native Americans, some of them phonies and others just hopeful of becoming
spies for foreign governments under cover of ultrapatriotic rackets. All of
them, I found, were galvanized into action to defend Coughlin's ("right of
free speech," and the unison in which these apparently separated individuals
and leaders of groups raised the same rallying cry seems to point to one

Your cars are the most polluting in the universe, and you don't give a shit about it according to studies. You won't have energy saving environmental taxes on the gas, or you would revolt. The same taxes that have caused massive savings in the Europe and produced energy saving cars. The Council on Foreign Relations and Royal Institute of International Affairs members employ the same techniques to control people -- including their fellow countrymen. The Council on Foreign Relations is using peacekeeping operations as a rationalization for the continuation of the largest military industrial complex in peace-time history.The decision by President Clinton to deploy U.S. forces in Kosovo represents a further deepening of peacekeeping operations as suitable missions for U.S. armed forces. "COLLECTIVE SECURITY" is the doctrine used to rationalize war as peacekeeping. The first part of the doctrine addresses systemic threats to peace -- it is in everyone's individual national interest to treat an attack on one nation as an attack on all. This part of the doctrine is completely compatible with traditional notions of warfare and even of the national interest. The second part of the doctrine opens a Pandora's box resulting in a state of perpetual warfare. In this notion, the international community has an interest in preventing sub-critical threats to peace, both between nations and within nations. Under this doctrine, should a conflict break out between two very minor countries, the international community has an interest in intervening to stop it. Moreover, according to this reasoning, should a conflict occur within a country, an insurrection, a civil war, a breakdown in authority, the international community has an interest in ending it. This was easily extended to the idea that should famine occur in a country, some natural disaster or other humanitarian problem, the international community had an interest in dealing with it. A series of logical steps that began with the assumption that collective security required a combined response to Nazi Germany or the Soviet Union, turned into a doctrine that held that hunger in Somalia was a challenge to the national interest of every nation. COLLECTIVE SECURITY is an end-run around the right of Congress to declare war. The purpose of a military force is to destroy other military forces. The use of military forces in peacekeeping has less to do with peace than it has to do with with creating an enemy the American people will willingly go to war against. While posturing for peace Council on Foreign Relations member George Kennan and his coconspirators turned the Soviet Union into an aggressor nation whose power would be used to justify the establishment of the largest military buildup in the history of the world. A military buildup that continues today -- even after the cold-war has ended -- fueled by $270 billion dollar peace time defense budgets -- ostensibly to be used for UN "peacekeeping" operations wherein US servicemen and servicewomen are put into military service wearing non-American uniforms, under the command of Non-Americans -- while their country is drowning in a $4. 7 trillion dollar debt. Until 1992 the enemy created by the Council on Foreign Relations was the Russians. The new enemy is "THE TERRORIST", and war has become peacekeeping. For example, congressional testimony has revealed that C.I.A. Director William Casey supervised Ollie North's contra operations in Nicaragua. Casey also worked undercover with Pope John Paul II and with the Pope's secretive worldwide organizations, the Knights of Malta, the Jesuits, and Opus Dei, as well as with the insiders of the Pope's Vatican Chancery. Casey not only convinced President Reagan to take the historic step of appointing a U.S. ambassador (the first ever) to the Vatican, but he made sure that the new diplomat selected for the job was a Knights of Malta brother to boot! William Casey: the head of the C.I.A and ABC Capital Cities. The history of the man, and as a further reflection upon the present cast of characters that were hired during his term as head of ABC Capital Cities and the long time Secret Society Brotherhood infrastructure that still operates and controls ABC Capital Cities. In reality William Casey was a Brotherhood mole, a special undercover agent inside the Reagan campaign organization. It was William Casey who would later see to it that the Reagan Administration was packed with appointees from the internationalist Council on Foreign Relations and the Trilateral Commission. But first, to make sure that his man, Ronald Reagan, then leading in the polls, would not be defeated in November by incumbent Jimmy Carter, it was necessary that William Casey and his good friend, George Bush, carry out the "October Surprise" plot in which Casey and Bush negotiated with the ayatollahs of Tehran, Iran. The objective: to guarantee the release of the U.S. hostages being held by Iranian revolutionaries who had seized the U.S. Embassy some nine months prior. Flying to Paris in 1987 during the height of the Presidential Campaign, Casey and Bush offered a secret deal to the Iranian emissaries: millions of dollars in military arms to the Iranians (then engaged in a bitter and bloody in military arms with madman Saddam Hussein of neighboring Iraq) in exchange for the American hostages. But only under one condition - that the hostages not be released until after the election and Ronald Reagan's inauguration. The essence of the October Surprise plot, therefore, was the strategy that to insure a Reagan victory in November, Jimmy Carter must be prevented from pulling a "surprise" - winning the release of the hostages just prior to the election. That, Casey reasoned, could result in a rapid upturn in Carter's election chances, as an overjoyed and gratified American electorate might well reward the incumbent President who had gotten our hostages out of the evil grip of Iran's Ayatollah Khomeini. Such an outcome had to be preserved at all costs. So, using their international centers and agents of influence, Casey and the Brotherhood dispatched word to Tehran: they were willing to "make a deal". The October Surprise predated and set a precedent for the Iran Contra scandal plot of Lt. Colonel Oliver North, John Poindexter, Casper Weinberger, and associates that was to come later in the Reagan era. This embarrassing "arms for hostages" arrangement was covered up for almost a decade until a few courageous people decided to step forth and tell the whole story. Red hair, Blonde hair, blue eyes they may have been of great stature as recent excavations of the 8 foot tall Firbolg Knights in Eire suggest. Then, the Reptilian species - who have according to Giza plain mathematics have come from the Serpens star cluster [serpens caput and serpens cauda both of 7 stars] arrived in 2000BC and as record would have it - infiltrated the Human race and its social structure and began the hybridisation experimentation. Various MK-slaves are there, some get eaten some get 'orgied' - flesh and blood is devoured especially that of the sacrifice - a female whose combination of blood; preferred menstrual [thats why satanic/druidic ritual goes with the full moon] - and with the secretion from the pineal gland stimulated by intense fear, the sacrifice drives the Reptiles wild with carnage. The pineal gland or third eye in human terms is an alien piece of biochemistry in the human race - as any biochemistry text book will tell of its reptilian biochemistry - so it leads us to wonder whether or not the Aryan Race was a phase 2 hybrid created by the Shape Changing reptiles so that they could colonise this sector of the '3' dimensional cosmos.
