The call from Friends of the Earth came after a leaked European Union draft document warned that the chemical gly-phosate, a key ingredient of Monsanto's glyphosate-based herbicide Roundup, could harm insects which act as a natural check on crop pests. The American multi-national also produces genetically engineered glyphosate immune seed crops designed to be used in conjunction with the weedkiller. Yesterday it was revealed that the confidential EU report concluded that glyphosate should not be approved for use in Europe, warning "harmful effects" on insects and spiders "cannot be excluded". Unrelated research in Sweden has also linked the chemical herbicide with the cancer known as non-Hodgkins lymphoma. A spokesman for Monsanto said the company "refutes absolutely" both claims about glyphosate, which he labelled the most benign herbicide in the world. = Guardian (London)Wednesday October 13, 1999 Biotech industry attacked Jane Martinson in New York International consumer activists accused the American biotechnology industry and US government of "bio-colonialism" yesterday and vowed to step up their campaign against genetically modified foods in the United States. In their first joint meeting, six international organisations accused the US government of backing big businesses such as Monsanto and Du Pont through its trade policy. The organisations made a pledge to campaign intensively against the biotechnology industry and the American government in the weeks leading up to the November meeting of the World Trade Organisation in Seattle. Sylvia Ribeiro, a campaigner for Rural Advancement Foundation International, said that a handful of companies were forcing farmers in poor countries to adopt their products. "We see this technology as a new bio-colonialism," she said at the meeting in New York yesterday. "A group of companies are imposing it and its consequences on many billions of people." Benedikt Haerlin, global co-ordinator on biotechnology for Greenpeace, said: "Monsanto is an ambassador for this technology, basically force feeding Europeans and not giving them the choice." Share prices for big biotechnology companies have fallen sharply in the past few months as European lobbies have led consumers to reject GM foods. Companies are terrified about the possible impact of the American consumer following the European example. Transplanted seeds are used in half of the soybean and a third of the corn crop in the US. These seeds are used in the manufacture of some of the country's best-known foodstuffs - from Heinz ketchup and the syrup in cola drinks to McDonalds' hamburger buns. In recent weeks Monsanto, one of the companies most affected by the European revolt, has called for those on both sides of the argument to attempt to reach some "common ground" on the use of the technology, which it claims has beneficial side-effects. Mr Haerlin indicated that such accommodation is some way off, however. He said that Greenpeace needed much more scientific evidence about the effects on the environment of injecting genes into crops - as well as on health - before it could agree to its use. "You should never say never," he said. However, he added that there was unlikely to be enough research "within the next five or 10 years". The organisations' strategy group includes Britain's Intermediate Technology Development Group as well as campaigners from South Africa and Asia. Patrick Mulvany, the food security policy adviser for the ITDG, said the campaigners would also reject the Amnerican government "dumping" any unwanted crop on the developing world. "It would be irresponsible and immoral simply to dump this stuff as food aid," he said. The ITDG is a member of the genetic engineering alliance, which is proposing that there should be a five-year freeze on the use of organisms which are genetically modified. The joint strategy group is planning a multi-pronged assault on the US consumer through a combination of press events and legal action. However, with a limited budget at its desposal it is unlikely to be able to launch a large advertising campaign. -Caveat Lector- Privacy advocates warn about Internet proposal Serial number of each PC would go with every parcel of data By Ted Bridis ASSOCIATED PRESS October 12, 1999 WASHINGTON -- Engineers designing a new way to send information across the Internet want to include a unique serial number from each personal computer within every parcel of data, an idea that privacy advocates fear could lead to tracing of senders' identities. Critics warn that, if adopted, the move could strip away a measure of anonymity and security enjoyed by tens of millions of home computer users who dial into America Online Inc. and other Internet providers over traditional telephone lines. The issue also illustrates the danger of the unintended consequences from arcane design decisions aimed at ensuring the Internet's stability into the 21st century. The proposal by the Internet Engineering Task Force, an international standards body, would include the serial number for each computer's network connection hardware as part of its expanded new Internet protocol address. These "IP" addresses, planted within e-mails and all other information flowing across the Internet, must be unique to distinguish each computer on the global network and to guide the billions of bits and bytes flowing among them. The task force's top engineers acknowledge some implications for online privacy, but, "I think the privacy concerns are overrated," said Fred Baker, the task force's chairman. But some privacy experts said they were appalled that engineers would consider the idea. The new address proposal, called "IPv6," would not become widely used for years but ultimately would affect every Internet user. Critics warned that commercial Internet sites, which already routinely record IP addresses, could begin to correlate these embedded serial numbers against a consumer's name, address and other personal details, from clothing size to political affiliation. The task force itself will ultimately decide whether to include the identifying numbers in the new IP addresses. The timing on that decision is unclear. Baker said the task force is also envisioning ways to configure Internet devices manually so addresses won't contain the sensitive numbers. "Those folks concerned about the privacy issue could use this (alternate) technique," said Thomas Narten, an IBM software engineer working with the task force. Most home computer users are assigned a different IP address each time they connect to the Internet through a telephone line, which affords some extra security and anonymity. It's akin to a person using a different phone number every day to shield his identity and avoid prank phone calls. But under the task force's proposal, a portion of even those somewhat randomly assigned addresses could include the consumer's unique serial number -- and that information would be stamped on every piece of information sent from his computer. "I'm just winding the tape forward here five years, when we all say, 'Oh, my God!' " said Richard L. Smith of Brookline, Mass., a security expert who was among the first to question the plan. The danger worsens, critics warn, as Internet sites begin to share information about their customers: A consumer visiting a Web site for the first time could be identified by his computer's serial number that had been recorded at another site. Habibie yesterday announced that it was dropping an investigation of possible corruption by former President Suharto, defying public sentiment days before an assembly is to choose the next president. In a statement that drew an angry response, Attorney General Ismudjoko said that a yearlong investigation had failed to find enough evidence to proceed with a case against Suharto, 78. Ismudjoko's inquiry centered on what had seemed the most accessible area of investigation, a complex of seven charitable foundations. Critics said Suharto had laundered huge payoffs through those foundations as part of a corrupt regime that earned him many billions of dollars. Habibie did not comment Monday. But the announcement appears to reflect his continuing allegiance to his longtime mentor. Habibie succeeded Suharto when he was forced to resign in May 1998. Some analysts said the move also reflected worries among Habibie and other veterans of Suharto's government that they could be tarred by a genuine and wide-ranging investigation into corruption. "We expected this," said Tenten Masduki, who heads Indonesian Corruption Watch. "No one in this country is brave enough to put Suharto on trial." But the announcement also sharpened what will be one of Habibie's crucial liabilities as an electoral assembly makes its endorsement next week for the next president -- his closeness to Suharto. Most assembly members were elected in a nationwide vote in June. Habibie's party came in second to the party of Megawati Sukarnoputri. But both candidates remain strong contenders for the presidency, which the 700-member assembly is to decide Oct. 20. A deputy chairman of Megawati's party, Kwik Kian Gie, criticized the announcement and the entire investigation. "It is very clear that all of this is just a mockery," he said. He promised that Megawati would reopen the inquiry if she won the presidency. A number of assembly members also voiced criticism, including the parliamentary representative of the powerful military bloc. Even the party that Habibie inherited from Suharto, Golkar, saw a backlash on the day before it is to announce whether it will continue to back Habibie as its candidate. "Politically, this is a major factor," said Marzuki Darusman, who heads an anti-Habibie faction in Golkar. "It could damage Habibie's candidacy." Meanwhile, in Dili, East Timor, the U.N.-backed peacekeeping force in East Timor accused the Indonesian army of providing support to an anti-independence militia that fired on peacekeepers over the weekend, raising fears that the army has decided to try to sabotage the peacekeeping operation. Australian Maj. Gen. Peter Cosgrove expressed suspicions that Indonesian soldiers and police officers joined the militia members in firing on the Australian peacekeepers with assault rifles Sunday. General signals analysis would also be carried about -- to determine nominal levels of different signals -- pattern analysis of signals deviations would be monitored and categorised as well as pattern analysis of communication content. Targets might be monitored for changes in signals patterns, which give valuable intelligence in its own right quite apart from the value of the actual content. To illustrate, if a person suddenly starts sending many encrypted messages one day to highly unusual addresses [Baghdad?], this might be important information which can be acted upon immediately, before the contents of the messages are decrypted. As much as sending nonsense messages with keywords attached, people could do as the following: completely disrupt your usual online habits/patterns, if possible. open a hotmail account. on the day, suddenly send it dozens of small, encyrpted messages. find email addresses, telephone numbers, inside defence establishments and government departments. send a mixture of clear text and encrypted (don't use your own key) information. EXAMPLE "to: [EMAIL PROTECTED] from: george b. boring subject: i am the unassuming little man in the funny cardigan with the bow tie. we spoke last week at the bar after your disappointment. attached is the information about our products that you seek. we assure you complete satisfaction in all our operations." Attach an encrypted picture of an atom bomb plan, or something like that. In fact, attach an triply encrypted copy of another encryption key. Send another message some hours later, with the instruction "use the key I sent you to encode our futher communications". Make up fake plans to seize executive power in Jakarta by military coup and install a junta. Email it to every single Indonesian military email address you can lay your hands on. Encypt sensitive commerical information from your workplace and email it to your friends. (if you don't wish to damage your employer you can always use a totally bogus key, you coward). Ring your friends and talk about the type of security responses you expect from the authorities for the different operations and your agreed responses (when to escalate, when to back down, and so forth). Mention the healthy profit you derived from the whitegoods supplied thru "our contact in Mexico City", and remind your leiutenants that they will have an excellent selection of arms available because of it. Detail some. Write love letters that purport to be from the CMDR US SEVENTH FLEET to his bondage mistress in Honululu. Use freemail accounts for that one; include a plausible explanation. Try phoning known government extension numbers and make indiscrete inquiries about things they might be interested in. The one-meter resolution black-and-white image of Washington, D.C., collected by Space Imaging 's IKONOS satellite, has unprecedented clarity and detail for commercial space imagery. The image showcases part of the Mall area in the heart of Washington D.C., and is downloadable from the Space Imaging Web site (see details below). The image caption is also available on the Web. "The clarity and detail of this first IKONOS image is validation of the leadership position of Lockheed Martin and Raytheon in optical imaging systems," said John Copple, Space Imaging's chief executive officer. "The launch was perfect and was itself a major milestone. Just three days after launch we were able to activate systems and start testing the collection capabilities of IKONOS - bringing us even closer to providing this new source of information to our customers. This is a remarkable achievement that would only have been possible with the heritage technology of Lockheed Martin and Raytheon." Copple continued, "The CARTERRAT image of Washington, D.C., taken September 30, was validation that the satellite was in perfect working order. Although we still have to calibrate the system to further improve and characterize the imagery, we are very pleased of the results so far. I want to thank all of our customers, vendors, and investors for the support that has made this possible." Jeff Harris, Space Imaging's president, added, "Space Imaging employees huddled together and watched the image come up on a large projected screen. Their awe-inspired reaction will no doubt be echoed by our customers and the industry. We are all so excited about this momentous event - the result of several years of hard work, dedication and commitment of our employees, and the patience and faith of our customers." The Washington, D.C. image is an example of the IKONOS satellite's collection capabilities. The image has not been processed to have a map-accuracy quality. The IKONOS satellite also has a sensor that collects four-meter multispectral (color) imagery. As satellite calibrations and check-out continue, imagery from the multispectral sensor will be released. IKONOS imagery and products, marketed under Space Imaging's CARTERRAT brand name, will be available for sale to customers by the end of this year. Initial product orders are being taken by Space Imaging's Customer Service Center (+301-552-0537 or 800-232-9037). The IKONOS satellite orbits the Earth in a sun-synchronous orbit - meaning it simply follows the sun as it travels around the globe - and its Eastman Kodak-built camera is an optical imaging device. The near-perfect optical sharpness of Kodak's telescope has never been achieved in any commercial space camera. The satellite circles the globe 14 times per day, or once every 98 minutes. The imagery is stored in Space Imaging's digital CARTERRAT archive and can be made available to customers very quickly - in as little as a few hours or days. Images from the IKONOS satellite will have unlimited utility in a number of markets including state and local government, mapping, agriculture, forestry, emergency response, utilities, telecommunications, real estate, environment, national security, transportation, and insurance and risk management. Highly detailed maps of entire countries can be made for the first time. Farmers can more precisely monitor the health of crops and estimate yields. Scientists can look at environmentally sensitive areas and predict trends. Government officials can monitor and plan enlightened land use policies. City planners can further the development of new housing communities. New and emerging uses include measuring and mapping damage to properties after natural disasters, planning for emergency response, mapping transportation networks, developing in-vehicle navigation systems, and planning and developing real estate. Edgar Hoover, to endorse the book. According to Orwell's FBI file, released under the U.S. Freedom of Information Act, Hoover declined. Instead, Hoover filed the request in a dossier he created on Orwell. FBI files show that in April 1949, Eugene Reynal, vice president of Harcourt, Brace and Co., wrote Hoover, arguably the incarnation of Orwell's authoritarian bureaucracy, for his thumbs up on the book. Related Document: George Orwell's FBI File "We hope you might be interested in helping to call this book to the attention of the American public, and thus perhaps helping to halt totalitarianism," Reynal wrote. Did Hoover read the book? While it isn't clear what Hoover thought of the book, or even if he read Orwell's fictionalized account of an out-of-control totalitarian government, the file shows that Hoover's opinion was beside the point. Endorsements were against bureau policy. Thus, fans of the English novelist may never know whether Hoover objected to Orwell's placement of the Thought Police under the jurisdiction of the Ministry of Love. But Hoover, in a very un-Orwellian move, said 'No' politely. "While I am looking forward to reading the book at the earliest opportunity, you are advised that in accordance with a long-standing policy I have refrained from lending my endorsement to commercial publications, and I am sure you will understand my inability to make an exception in this instance," Hoover replied. The copy of the book Reynal sent to Hoover wound up in the FBI library. Nevertheless, the bureau stayed on top of the situation. Another internal memo in the file with the subject heading "Smear Campaign/Committee for a return to the homeland internal security," discussed an article in a Russian-language newspaper arguing that 1984 was a portrayal of life in the United States. "Let us give what is due to the Hoovers," the memo states. "The mechanization of police surveillance of average Americans has assumed imposing proportions, especially in the technique of listening in on telephone conversations. This art has reached fabulous heights in the United States." The article concludes that "there is one field in the American life that never yet has suffered a decline, but is flourishing year after year. It is police surveillance and investigation. Indeed, in this field, America has surpassed the world and has no equals." Though the bureau might have looked on the Russian article as part of a smear campaign -- as its FBI categorization suggests -- there was more than a grain of truth to its assertions. According to The FBI Comprehensive Reference Guide, Congress banned wiretapping in 1934. But President Franklin D. Roosevelt gave a secret directive that allowed the bureau to tap phone lines with the attorney general's permission. The "Black Bag Jobs" described in the guide required FBI operatives to illegally break into residences and offices targeted for surveillance. Other Orwellian advancements in government monitoring of citizenry have kept up with the times. According to press reports, the National Security Agency operates a global spy system code-named ECHELON, which coordinates intelligence-gathering by spy agencies in Canada, New Zealand, Australia and Great Britain. Under the program, the agencies share intelligence-gathering duties and some of the intercepted information. In general, each country limits spying on its own citizens. However, a former Canadian intelligence official has claimed the British government once got around the rules by using Canada's Communications Security Establishment to collect intelligence on British citizens. Orwell's offspring If not for the original appearance of Big Brother, Orwell's prophetic book might now seem cliche. Movies today, such as Enemy of the State or The Truman Show, continue to delve into the issue of government invasion of privacy. "Nothing will be your own, private, exclusive, except a few cubic centimeters inside your cranium," Orwell wrote. Orwell's earlier novel Animal Farm also caught the FBI director's eye. The Orwell file includes several pages of Hoover's press clippings and memos on the radical left's denouncements of the book. Ramirez a former Marine Corps sergeant based in Miami, was told to fly immediately to San Antonio along with three other members of SID-a unit, known as founder and chairman George Wackenhut's "private FBI," that provided executive protection and conducted undercover investigations and sting operations. Once they arrived, they rented two gray Ford Tauruses and drove four hours to a desolate town on the Mexican border called Eagle Pass. There, just after dark, they met two truck drivers who had been flown in from Houston. Inside a nearby warehouse was an 18 -wheel tractor-trailer, which the two truck drivers and the four Wackenhut agents in their rented cars were supposed to transport to Chicago. "My instructions were very clear," Ramirez recalls. "Do not look into the trailer, secure it, and make sure it safely gets to Chicago." It went without saying that no one else was supposed to look in the trailer, either, which is why the Wackenhut men were armed with fully loaded Remington 870 pump-action shotguns. The convoy drove for 30 hours straight, stopping only for gas and food. Even then, one of the Wackenhut agents had to stay with the truck, standing by one of the cars, its trunk open, shotgun within easy reach. "Whenever we stopped, I bought a shot glass with the name of the town on it," Ramirez recalls. "I have glasses from Oklahoma City, Kansas City, St. Louis." A little before 5:00 on the morning of the third day, they delivered the trailer to a practically empty warehouse outside Chicago. A burly man who had been waiting for them on the loading dock told them to take off the locks and go home, and that was that. They were on a plane back to Miami that afternoon. Later Ramirez's superiors told him-as they told other SID agents about similar midnight runs-that the trucks contained $40 million worth of food stamps. After considering the secrecy, the way the team was assembled and the orders not to stop or open the truck, Ramirez decided he didn't believe that explanation. Neither do we. One reason is simple: A Department of Agriculture official simply denies that food stamps are shipped that way. "Someone is blowing smoke," he says. Another reason is that after a six-month investigation, in the course of which we spoke to more than 300 people, we believe we know what the truck did contain-equipment necessary for the manufacture of chemical weapons-and where it was headed: to Saddam Hussein's Iraq. And the Wackenhut Corporation-a publicly traded company with strong ties to the CIA and federal contracts worth $200 million a year-was making sure Saddam would be geting his equipment intact. The question is why. In 1954, George Wackenhut, then a 34-year old former FBI agent, joined up with three other former FBI agents to open a company in Miami called Special Agent Investigators Inc. The transcripts fill in major gaps in Kissinger's memoir version of his triangular diplomacy with Beijing and Moscow, revealing his previously secret attempt to create a "tacit alliance" with China while deceiving the Soviets about the relationship. According to the transcripts, Kissinger repeatedly offered satellite intelligence to the Chinese from 1971 to 1973, high speed computers in 1975, and even a hot line for early warning on Soviet troop movements. These never-before-published near-verbatim transcripts, most of which were previously classified "Top Secret/Sensitive/Exclusively Eyes Only," provide scintillating detail on the personalities of world leaders like Mao, Brezhnev, Nixon and Kissinger himself, such as Mao's query to Kissinger (and then-Ambassador George Bush) about Jewish ownership of American newspapers. Although Nixon and Kissinger realized, when meeting Mao, that his health was poor, it was a state secret that heart and lung problems had almost caused Mao's death in the previous weeks. Both Nixon and Kissinger gave detailed accounts of this meeting in their memoirs but they failed to mention that Mao may have found Nixon a little tedious. After Nixon tried to justify his pro-Pakistani, anti-Indian stance during the South Asian War, Mao asked Nixon to "do a little less briefing." Nor did they mention Nixon's references to Japan's "doubts" about the U.S. opening to China. Then as now, the Japanese must have wondered whether Washington would develop relations with Beijing at Tokyo's expensive. Item 2 (pp. 45, 50-51) Months before Nixons visit but a few weeks after Henry Kissingers secret trip to Beijing in July 1971, Soviet ambassador asked Kissinger on 17 August 1971 whether he had provided the Chinese with intelligence information on Soviet military dispositions. Kissinger denied that he had, but various secondary accounts (e.g., Raymond Garthoff, Detente and Confrontation, 1994, p. 262) suggest, however, that he soon provided intelligence data to the Chinese as as early as his October 1971 visit to Beijing. The relevant documents from October 1971 remain classified but new evidence shows that Kissinger was more than willing to provide sensitive intelligence information to the Chinese. The transcript of a meeting on 13 December, during the Indian-Pakistan war, shows Kissinger offering Ambassador to the UN Huang Hua highly sensitive information, derived from reconnaissance satellite photography, on Soviet military deployments. Bogus Leaflets, Pamphlets, and Other Publications: COINTELPRO documents show that the FBI routinely put out phony leaflets, posters, pamphlets, newspapers, and other publications in the name of movement groups. The purpose was to discredit the groups and turn them against one another. FBI cartoon leaflets were used to divide and disrupt the main national anti-war coalition of the late 1960s. Similar fliers were circulated in 1968 and 1969 in the name of the Black Panthers and the United Slaves (US), a rival Black nationalist group based in Southern California. The phony Panther/US leaflets, together with other covert operations, were credited with subverting a fragile truce between the two groups and igniting an explosion of internecine violence that left four Panthers dead, many more wounded, and a once-flourishing regional Black movement decimated. Another major COINTELPRO operation involved a children's coloring book which the Black Panther Party had rejected as anti-white and gratuitously violent. The FBI revised the coloring book to make it even more offensive. Its field offices then distributed thousands of copies anonymously or under phony organizational letterheads. Many backers of the Party's program of free breakfasts for children withdrew their support after the FBI conned them into believing that the bogus coloring book was being used in the program. Forged Correspondence: Former employees have confirmed that the FBI has the capacity to produce state-of-the-art forgery. This capacity was used under COINTELPRO to create snitch jackets and bogus communications that exacerbated differences among activists and disrupted their work. One such forgery intimidated civil rights worker Muhammed Kenyatta (Donald Jackson), causing him to abandon promising projects in Jackson, Mississippi. Kenyatta had foundation grants to form Black economic cooperatives and open a "Black and Proud School" for dropouts. He was also a student organizer at nearby Tougaloo College. In the winter of 1969, after an extended campaign of FBI and police harassment, Kenyatta received a letter, purportedly from the Tougaloo College Defense Committee, which "directed" that he cease his political activities immediately. If he did not "heed our diplomatic and well-thought-out warning," the committee would consider taking measures "which would have a more direct effect and which would not be as cordial as this note." Make possession of a beer a felony, or if that is deemed too severe, just tax alcohol until a sixpack costs consumers $29.99 ... As a matter of fact, it's been proven that alcohol in and of itself isn't bad and could actually be good for the liver if not abused... But who doesn't abuse it right? I don't believe smoking any kind of tobacco has this attribute. Smoke a little and it's good for you... Nope. All smoking of tobacco is bad. So you see, it's not the alcohol that's bad it's the person with a lack of responsibility who abuses it. We all know the ramifications of drinking to much... It's not like a drunk driver can say, "Well golly gee! I didn't know that would happen!" Back to smoking in public... It shouldn't be done where it can affect others. And about this second hand smoke stuff... If smoking through a cigarette with a filter is detrimental to your health then why would smoke not passing through the filter not be detrimental? It's common sense that second hand smoke is just as bad, if not worse. We all have rights in this country, and one of those rights is to not have our rights infringed upon. You know, like good health. I agree my first statement was rather blunt. But this email came after I had to walking through a wall of smoke **outside**... It was my frustration talking at that point. A very good book which covers suppressed cancer treatments (amongst other things) and documents the appalling harrassment and persecution handed out to some doctors/researchers/philanthropists who try to make these treatments available to the people suffering from cancer. Disappearing Inc. claims that once the key is destroyed the message can never be read again, and thus the message has effectively self-destructed like a Mission:Impossible assignment. While it is possible (although sadly, unlikely) that Disappearing Inc. has implemented this system using an appropriate mix of good authentication scheme, strong encryption algorithm, secure key generation, high level of site security, and secure key transmission it doesn't really matter. It is hardly surprising, therefore, that the recent election success of Haider's far-Right Freedom Party - known more disparagingly as the Fuhrer Party - has left the world fearing that the spectre of Nazism has returned to haunt and torture it once more. For Jewish professor Alexander Roifer, the recent emergence of Haider as a power broker in Austrian politics has revived the ghosts of his family's troubled past. While the designer-clad, Porsche-driving Haider, the son of a Nazi can justifiably claim to be one of Austria's richest men, the professor who lives on a modest university salary in Jerusalem, can equally claim to have been robbed of his birthright - the vast and lucrative estate which is the basis of Haider's fortune. The story of Haider and Roifer, uncovered by The Mail on Sunday, is a tale of two very different men: one with former Nazi links who has benefited from the evils of the past; the other, one of countless Jewish victims of that evil dispossessed after being forced to flee Europe in fear of their lives. On Wednesday, 49-year-old Haider will visit London as part of a whistlestop tour of European capitals aimed at restoring his tarnished reputation. He will announce that he has been misunderstood, misquoted and maligned. Afterwards he will return to his home in the Right-wing stronghold of Carinthia in southern Austria. For the perma-tanned Haider, home is a magnificent 3,700-acre property called Barental - Bear Valley - a hunting, shooting, fishing and wood-logging estate worth a conservative £10 million. Signed over to him in 1986, in a generous deed of gift from his great-uncle, Wilhelm Webhofer, it is Barental which funds Haider's extravagant image. But while there is no question that he is the legal owner of the estate, his family's acquisition of the property is still a matter of moral debate and takes us into the darkest corners of Austria's past. Before the war, Barental belonged to Professor Roifer's father, Giorgio, a Jewish merchant born in Russia who studied law in Vienna before moving into the timber industry. Settling in Pisa, Italy, in the Twenties he founded a wood importing business with a friend and ten years later pur chased the forest area known as Barental near the Austrian border with Slovenia. Roifer was always careful with his money, but his family lived well, with servants, horses and cars, and counted themselves among Italy's comfortably well-off. Roifer's business plan, however, had not accounted for the Anschluss - Nazi Germany's annexation of Austria - in March 1938. According to Hitler, not a single life was lost in the conquest of Austria. In fact, it led to the murder, suicide and dispossession of thousands of Jews in a wave of brutal anti-Semitism and the spontaneous 'Aryanisation' of the country - the removal of property and assets from their Jewish owners. It was only a few weeks after the Anschluss that Roifer found a sign on the entrance of the Moser Hotel in the town of Klagenfurt, where he liked to stay when visiting his estate. 'Dogs and Jews are not welcome,' it read. Shortly afterwards Roifer, just 38, died of cancer. But on his deathbed, anticipating the terrible persecution that was to come, he urged his wife, Mathilde, to flee to Palestine with their children daughter Noemi, aged 10, Josef, eight, and Alexander, then just six. A year later Mathilde Roifer left Italy, entrusting the family's property, including Barental, to her brother-in-law, who shortly afterwards was forced to sign over responsibility for the family's assets to an Austrian lawyer. At the beginning of 1941 Barental was sold to Josef Webhofer - Wilhelm's father- a rich businessman and Nazi activist, who sealed the deal after he was recommended as a good party member to Heinrich Himmler, who was head of Hitler's secret police, the Gestapo. The sale, recorded as an ' Entjudungsangelegenheit' - a matte r of taking something from a Jew - was, according to documents, transacted between Webhofer, 'a full Aryan', and Mathilde Roifer, 'a Jewess'. The purchase price was 300,000 Reichsmarks - around £750,000 at today's prices - and about one tenth of its real value. Of the sale price, 92,000 Reichsmarks were deducted to pay off a bank loan, while the remaining 208,000 Reichsmarks were ordered to be paid into a 'blocked' bank account. Im not at liberty to discuss some of the other security measures to keep intruders away, but I assure you that the dogs are safer. At least you can attempt to reason with a dog. Inside Laissez Faire City, one begins to wonder why the whole world isnt organized this way. No one explained "the rules" to me, because there apparently arent any, aside from the common sense prohibition of reckless contact with outsiders. LFC Headquarters is a walled, high-security laboratory designed for prodigies and Third Wave kids of all ages. It hums like a 24-hour beehive. I believe if they wanted to turn the earth physically upside down to inspect its undercarriage, they could do it. Laissez Faire City has an impressive array of brains and brawn and technical facilities, and Ill bet that I only got the 25-cent tour of half of it. Around the corner from Headquarters, theres a four-star restaurant for LFC residents and diplomats, a hotel for LFC guests, and the sedate tree-lined campus of Rand University. A short hop by private plane or helicopter and you arrive at my house, so to speak. I dont actually own the place. Its unlikely that anyone other than Bill Gates or Donald Trump could own such a place -- a mansion on a hilltop overlooking the ocean. It requires a staff of three to keep the gardens in shape, clean the kidney-shaped swimming pool, and run the kitchen. The land is indescribably beautiful, with every spectacular form of wildlife imaginable, including big cats. The ocean is full of marlin, sailfish, tuna, lobster, you name it. Amazingly, there are no mosquitos up here -- only huge, royal blue butterflies, fuzzy gray raccoons, incredible stick insects about the size of a Parker pen, and big brown monkeys howling in the trees on the other side of my driveway. After a night or two in a clean, comfortable room in paradise, you might be invited to visit the LFC Mountain Fortress, currently under construction. Its literally half a mountain, with enough room to rebuild Bel Air. I think theyre getting close to completing the bank vaults and trading rooms. All the structural work is done, anyway -- thick, reinforced concrete walls rising in tiers on the highest point for a couple hundred miles. The view is unlike anything Ive ever seen before, and Ive seen most of North America and Europe. There is a deeply profound sense of serenity and rightness, standing on a plinth overlooking the emerald forest and endless ocean, perceiving the curvature of the earth. So, if were talking about the actual differences between Laissez Faire City and Galts Gulch, the most important discrepancy is an existential one. LFC is real -- not fictional. Its on a mountaintop, not tucked away in some pokey valley. The Big Difference Theres another set of differences, largely historical in nature. We have internet clout coming out of our ears and the ability to make markets. I can only guess how much dough is being moved and traded daily in cyberspace. What I do know is that Laissez Faire City, despite all of its plush real estate, exists mainly as a "virtual" city that spans the globe. Two-thirds of our full-time residents live somewhere else in the world, working on screens wired to LFC and a growing population of cyber-entrepreneurs. Sorry, Dagny, no diesel railroads in this version of Atlantis. Youll have to go to Philly or Boston to visit Amtrak (if any of their trains happen to be running, instead of derailing that day). Theres an old commuter line that thumps through Silicon Valley and an occasional freight train or two in Colorado -- but thats about the extent of locomotion on steel in the post-industrial world. LFC uses 757 jets and Cessna turboprops for fast, friendly carriage of passengers and cargo to our neck of the woods. Maybe that implies another structural difference between LFC and Ayn Rands 1957 sketch of utopia. Bluntly, other people's smoke makes me cough, and enough of it can make it difficult for me to breathe. Orwell was coming at the subject from the standpoint of a disillusioned leftist who was not about to go over to the Right. The book was designed as a wakeup call for Western progressives who still, as late as 1948, tended to idealize the Soviet Union. Colt has long wanted to move out of their antiquated factory in West Hartford, which has been plagued with union problems since the early '90s. CMI (Colt Manufacturing, Inc.) is owned by New York banker, Donald Zilkha, who still maintains his Iraqi citizenship. Unfortunately, while Mr. Zilkha owns CMI, he *does not* own the name "Colt". That belongs to the State of Connecticut. The State gained ownership of the name when the companies previous owners went bankrupt in 1994 owing the State of Connecticut pension fund $11,000,000. Zilkha's arrangement with the State required him to keep the ailing company in Connecticut for ten years, which included the manufacturing of any gun that had ever been produced in that factoryor pay the State $11,000,000 they lost in the previous bankruptcy. Apparently Zilkha has come up with an exit strategy that will allow him to both move the company's manufacturing to friendlier, non-union, ground and leave the companies creditors sucking wind. Zilkha is now negotiating with the State to finally buy the name "Colt". The plan calls for a breakup of the existing company into four separate legal entities. The majority of the Colt pistol line will be eliminated and the remaining models, including their popular single action revolvers, Pocket 9, Pony, Defender and the new Officer's carry will be moved to a new company, "Colt Classics", in Springfield, Mass. This will serve as their "custom shop", as well as handling consumer gun sales. No need to run out panic buying a Colt product one of these products listed above is what you're interested in. Colt's military weapons, the M4 carbine and the M16, will be moved to another Colt Holdings owned company, SACO Defense in Maine. They will undoubtedly continue the production of the AR15 as well, but it will most likely be sold through the "Custom Shop"...no doubt at a higher price. CMI, the current corporation, with all it's outstanding debts to vendors, along with it's many lawsuits, and union contracts will file for protection under Federal Bankruptcy statutes and the factory in West Hartford will be closed, leaving the many creditors and the 780 employees out in the cold. Colt headquarters and it's executives, under yet another corporate veil (iColt), will move to a location near Washington D.C. to focus on their lobbying efforts which include more sweetheart military contracts and government grants for developing their much touted but non-existent "Smart Gun". Zilkha has been lobbying Democratic lawmakers to *give* the company $100,000,000 in development money for this white elephant. Unfortunately for Mr. Zilkha, another company has recently shown an NIJ panel, who previously gave Colt $500,000 for Smart Gun development, that they are at least two years ahead of Colt in the development of Smart Gun technology. Colt is unlikely to land their government windfall for Smart Gun development. Colt president, Steve Sliwa, speaking about the Smart Gun, has publicly stated that Colt has "bet the future of the company on it". Even Zilkha political crony, Sen. Chuck Schumer, won't be able to get this money out of Congress for Colt's non-existent pipe-dream. Numerous firings over the last few months, which included several long-time Colt executives and department heads, indicate that this move is not far off. Colt will continue negotiating with the cities regarding a settlement of the numerous lawsuits, but once Zilkha has secured the rights to "Colt" name from the State of Connecticut, and they complete their plans to divide up the profitable areas of the company, safe from creditors, the cities will find that Mr. Zilkha has left them holding an empty bag. The other gun companies being sued will surely be the loser in this battle. The ultimate loser will be the American gun owner. There is everything in this story for a good novel. A rich Iraqi oilman/banker, from the richest Jewish family in America (I only include this as a point of interest...I'm hardly an anti- Semite as Aaron Zellman will attest to), attempting to control 85% of the world's arms market! ISLAMABAD, Pakistan - Pakistani Army troops took over state-run television and radio stations throughout the country Tuesday, closed major airports and announced that the prime minister and his government had been removed. The move followed Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif's surprise dismissal, hours earlier, of the powerful army chief of staff, General Pervez Musharraf. The general was on a visit to Sri Lanka at the time. In a swift reaction, army troops cordoned off the prime minister in his residence in Islamabad, took over the houses of several other top ministers and seized other government buildings. A senior police official said that troops had told Mr. Sharif not to leave his home and that police there had been disarmed. A military source said that Mr. Sharif's brother, Shahbaz Sharif, who had been chief minister in Punjab Province, was also in ''protective custody'' at the prime minister's home. General Musharraf flew back to Pakistan later Tuesday and was met by a large contingent of soldiers at the airport in the southern city of Karachi. He then went to Karachi's television station, where he was preparing to deliver a speech to the nation, the army information office said. The new command, established Oct. 7 in Norfolk, Va., will be called the U.S. Joint Forces Command, and replaces the former U.S. Atlantic Command. At a ceremony commemorating the new unit, Defense Secretary William Cohen told participants the American people shouldn't fear the potential of seeing U.S. military forces on the streets of U.S. cities. The military must "deal with the threats we are most likely to face," Cohen told reporters, downplaying concerns about troops operating on home soil. "The American people should not be concerned about it. They should welcome it." In opposing the measure, critics cite the 1878 Posse Comitatus Act, which prohibits federal troops from participating in domestic law enforcement activities under most circumstances. Last week's feature summarized a Dutch study of recovered memory in abuse survivors. In the same issue of Dissociation Elizabeth Bowman, M.D. has written an excellent two-part article summarizing the current state of the research literature concerning delayed memories of child abuse. Bowman notes that cognitive psychologists who have not studied traumatized individuals have contributed much of the research literature on memory. Her contribution is to pull together the well-designed studies which have used trauma survivors in order to study traumatic memory. In this week's feature I will summarize the Bowman's first article entitled "Delayed Memories of Child Abuse: Part I: An Overview of Research Findings on Forgetting, Remembering, and Corroborating Trauma." Her first article goes about attempting to answer several questions. I will summarize her questions and the conclusions which she draws from the research literature: 1. Does amnesia exist for traumas other than child abuse? She concludes that amnesia in response to extreme emotional arousal has been documented as far back as 1904, when Janet reported amnesia in response to bereavement. Amnesia has also been reported in combat, for crimes, and for concentration camp experiences and torture. 2. How often, if at all, do people report forgetting child abuse? Studies vary in frequency. Between 31 and 64 percent of abuse survivors in six major studies reported that they forgot "some of the abuse." Numbers reporting severe amnesia ranged from under 12% to 59%. 3. Are there any factors associated with forgetting child abuse? The factors positively associated with forgetting abuse include: Children abused at a younger age were more likely to have forgotten the abuse. Persons reporting more than one type of abuse were more likely to report forgetting the abuse. Abuse which included threats to safety and intense emotions was more likely to be forgotten. Other factors emerged in some studies but not in other studies. 4. Is the return of delayed abuse memories solely due to psychotherapy? Studies often mention psychotherapy as one factor which can trigger delayed memories to emerge. Bowman concludes that "the majority of memories are recovered outside of therapy sessions and occur in response to a variety of triggers that do not involve intervention by a therapist." 5. Is there corroboration for returned memories of abuse? Studies report 50-75% of abuse survivors corroborating the facts of their abuse through an outside source. Corroboration of ritual abuse was lower. One study of ritual abuse found 3% corroboration in delayed memory patients and 20% corroboration in patients with continuous memories of ritual abuse. Another study put the numbers between 14% and 37%. 6. Do trauma or emotional arousal affect the availability and accuracy of memory? This is a more difficult area to study. Laboratory researchers are limited by ethical concerns. They cannot ethically traumatize a subject in a way which duplicates the impact of severe child abuse. Laboratory research on mild trauma is only partially applicable to abuse survivors. The discussion in this section of the paper is complex. Some research suggests that later recall is most impaired for both emotionless events and events evoking extreme levels of emotions. Violent crimes are remembered in more detail than non-violent crimes. Some events seem to be burned-into memory with a "flashbulb effect." Extreme trauma has also been proven to disturb memory. Albach, Moorman, Bermond from The Netherlands studied 97 adult victims of extreme sexual abuse who ranged in age from 18 to 55. 90% of the subjects had been abused for one year or longer. A control group of 65 women, matched for age and education, was studied as well. The control group reported on their memories of "ordinary unpleasant childhood experiences." The abuse survivors were broken into two groups. One group had participated in psychotherapy while the other group had not. This clever design allowed the authors to look carefully at whether psychotherapy had influenced the memory recovery process. 34% of the abuse survivors who had been in therapy reported an inability to recall the abuse at some point, while 33% of survivors who had not been in therapy reported such amnesia. Only 1% of the control group reported an inability to recall the unpleasant event. Similar patterns were found on other questions asked. The authors noted that Dutch therapists tend to focus much less on the importance of memory recovery than therapists in some other countries. They then studied what events seemed to be responsible for triggering the later recall of abuse. Subjects reported recovering memories after they discovered their own daughter had been abused, after another trauma occurred, and when confronted with specific sensory triggers during a time when they were "physically and emotionally exhausted." ... They reported that verbal cues were not as significant as olfactory, sensorimotor, auditory, and visual cues. The authors concluded that therapy was not a significant contributor to the recall of abuse in a majority of their Dutch patients. They found no significant differences in amnesia, memory recovery, or other memory phenomena between the survivors who participated in psychotherapy and those who did not. Their study supports earlier studies which have found that some amount of amnesia and later "recovered memory" often accompanies severe child abuse. The error occurred when visa approval numbers from the four INS service centers that process H-1B applications didn't get into the agency's main computer system in Washington that tracks totals, she said. "They can blame system errors or the computer. They can blame anything they want, but ultimately this is an agency that cannot count," Smith spokesman Allen Kay said. INS officials declined to discuss options for dealing with the problem. But agency spokeswoman Elaine Komis said, "We're trying to find a resolution that first of all is permissible by law and second of all that will cause the least possible inconvenience to both current and future H-1B employers and beneficiaries." Congressional aides said INS managers have floated several ideas, including reducing this year's allotment by the amount of the 1999 overage or revoking visas issued after the 115,000 cap was reached. A spokesman for Sen. Slade Gorton, R-Wash., said Gorton hoped the agency's mistake would not be used to penalize high-technology companies and their workers. Microsoft Corp. was among the major proponents of easing visa limitations on high-tech workers. The cap was lifted from 65,000 workers last year. Revocation would be "unfair and inhumane," said Sen. Phil Gramm, R-Texas, who has introduced legislation to increase the high-tech visa allotment to 200,000 annually over the next three years. "There has to be a better way," he said. The Information Technology Association of America, a Virginia-based industry group that is pressing to increase the H-1B cap, agreed. "You can't cut off that pipeline," said ITAA Vice President Renee Winsky, citing Labor Department projections that the industry will need 140,000 new workers a year over the next decade. Sen. Spencer Abraham, R-Mich., chairman of the Senate Judiciary Committee's immigration panel, suggested to INS Commissioner Doris Meissner that the overage be applied to previous years in which the entire visa allotment was not used. Reducing this year's allocation "would cause me grave concerns," Abraham wrote to Meissner. This suggests the start of a new wave of actions against paint companies. o The Rhode Island suit seeks to recover public costs of providing health care and special education to children supposedly harmed by lead poisoning -- as well as requiring the industry to strip all lead paint from public and private buildings accessible to children in the state. o The law firm is financing Rhode Island's suit in return for a 17 percent share of any recovery it wins for the state. o The suit alleges that eight companies that either made lead paint, or acquired companies that did, conspired to promote their products while failing to disclose the danger it posed to children. o Yet paint makers stopped using lead in interior paints in the 1950s -- while the federal government banned lead in paint in 1978. When they finished with the eight or so "reasons" for, they went ahead and showed them over, and indeed, over again. The senators were not watching, so it was not an attempt to influence them. All it could do would be to give not well informed viewers a poor opinion of the senators who voted against the Treaty, and a positive view of those who voted for it. This is political partisanship, and another black mark in CPSAN's book. Every bit of it is the Truth.* Where do you start if you wanting total control of the minds, bodies and souls of a country? You start with the children. How do you perform this systematic brainwashing of the children? You first have to start by getting full control of the schools. You have to be able to force the use of your materials, your methods and your value system. Teachers must be indoctrinated in college and enrolled into a strong socialist organization to keep them straight. The teachers are convinced that top educators and the centralized government know what's best for your children. To handle teachers not indoctrinated, you need to punish those who would rebel, first by controlling their funding and then by passing laws which force them to use your "system". Next, you make sure that the parents are happy with what you are doing. HOW? What do you tell the parents? You announce a revolutionary new approach to teaching. You tell the parents that you are going to make dramatic improvements. You use positive, flowery words to put the proper "spin" on what you are doing. You then tell the parents that this approach will help the children be more tolerant and understanding of others. The chidren will be taught social skills such as conflict resolution, self esteem, etc.. What does that REALLY mean? You teach the children that people have different values and that no set of values is superior, just a different way of looking at things. Christians are no better than Buddhists who are no better than Satanic Cults. It's all just a "different way of viewing the world". You know that to control people, you have to get them to stop thinking for themselves but to think for the collective good. How do you do that? You teach the children in groups. You teach only at the level of the least intelligent. The goal is to "dumb down" the children and get them used to working only for the good of "the group". You stop teaching the traditional subjects in a traditional way. You tell parents that you want their children to learn a "higher order of thinking". This higher order of thinking translates into having the teachers implant the "right value system" into the children. What you want the students to learn is to focus on their emotions and to downplay values and opinions as relative. What about the parents and their values? The teachers are taught to watch for signs that the parents are resisting or impeding the brainwashing effort. Since you are teaching the children "how to think", they can not pass until they think the way you have taught them. Whenever actual subjects are taught, it must be taught the "politically correct" way. History books must be rewritten to reflect the view of history you want to implant into the children. You then use the children as spies for the State against the parents. You develop surveys (and homework assignments) to ask questions concerning the parents like "Do your parents own guns?" "Do they drink too much?" "What do they think about politics?" "What views do they hold which are politically incorrect?" You then announce a new health screening program which will help guard the children against both physical and mental disease. Why? So you can have professionals "examine" the children in a way which is degrading and embarrasing. You "screen" the children with questions like "Have you ever forced sex on someone?" "Do you ever torture animals?" "Have you ever shot a gun?" "Have you ever started a fire?" All the while you reassure the Parents telling them that you must get their permission even to give their child an aspirin. Parents assume the schools are "overly protective" and that their children's minds and bodies are safe. This is the basics of how dictatorships brainwash children. Its a good thing it could NEVER happen here. Or could it? Or even worse, has it already started? CONSIDER THESE FACTS: 1. The federal government of the united States (that's not a typo!) has used force, intimidation, lies, deceit and other methods to get you to pay federal income tax. The fact is that 95% of the people who pay are not even subject to the tax. (Its all in the Code once you find out how to read it and what it means. And it can easily be documented and confirmed.) 2. So the federal government STEALS your money through fraud, deception and threat of force. Then, they offer to give the States money for education, no strings attached. The proposed agenda of the Seattle Round leaves no room for doubt that the economics of the developing countries face a new attack in the new millennium. The Experience So Far: We the Losers The WTO with super sovereign judicial power has been a decisive step in the globalisation of capitalist economy. The experience of the Indian people as regards WTO over the past five year is not particularly pleasant. It had promised to raise standards of living and ensure full employment, to ensure steady growth in real income and effective demand; optimal utilisation of world resources; guarantee of a share for the developing and the least developed countries in international trade. None of these promises have so far been fulfilled, nor are there any indications that any progress has been towards these goals. On the contrary the trend is that the progress towards this goal has been thwarted by the discriminatory policies followed by several developed countries to block exports from the developing countries through anti-dumping and other related measures. Despite the ballads sung by the bards of globalisation it is seen that the imports of India have increased far more than the exports between 1994-95 to 1997-98 and the balance of payments position has worsened. The ratio of exports to imports has deteriorated. There has been no increase in the countrys share of world exports; compared to 1980 the percentage has, in fact, declined. The foreign investment flows (FDIs) have increased but mainly in the portfolio (shares and stocks) sectors. The outflows towards fees for technical know-how, royalties and dividends have also registered marked increase. The net in-flow of capital is not spectacular Agriculture is perhaps the worst sufferer. The only gain has been in the export of rice. All other commodities have suffered. The link with global market has, in fact, introduced an unprecedented vulnerability in Indian agriculture. Farmers chasing the mirage of cash crops and (direct or indirect) exports have faced ruination; a number of them committed suicide last year. The component of imports has increased and with it dependence on multinational corporations. I understand that U.S. Customs, (at your agencys insistence), is demanding Kenex recall earlier shipments sent to its U.S. customers or face punitive fines. To ensure her free- dom, she agreed to falsify her story. But 14 years later, she came clean with the truth. Yet now Judge Albert Sabo, who presided over Abu-Jamal's original legal railroading, has just ruled that her new testimony must be barred as a factor of consideration in the appeal for a new trial. The judge said that this time the testimony of Veronica has suddenly become ``worthy of little or no belief,'' i.e., it's become unreliable. Here in what is often called the most trade-dependent region of the nation, they said the conference would be a chance to showcase Seattle as a world-class center of high-tech innovation and a friend to global trade. All that may still happen when 5,000 delegates and dignitaries from 134 nations -- including President Clinton -- gather to start a new round of global trade negotiations here in November. Those negotiations will encompass some of the most politically sensitive issues facing the world's trading nations, including rules on agriculture and new technologies. But it is increasingly clear that the largest free-trade meeting ever held in this country has also become a giant protest magnet for a broad array of environmental, labor and other groups that say the trade body is a handmaid to corporate interests whose authority should be sharply curtailed. Three hundred groups are vowing to bring 50,000 people or more to downtown Seattle to picket, demonstrate, hold teach-ins and cause general disruption during the Nov. 30-Dec. 3 meeting that could turn the city's streets into a carnival of protest and, perhaps, a morass of gridlock. It is a sign of how crucial trade issues have become to average people that a meeting once might have excited only policy experts now has drawn the attention of a cross-section of America that includes farmers, fishermen and assembly-line workers. The W.T.O. has already been entangled in spats over items that include Caribbean-grown bananas, hormone-fed beef from the United States, gas refined in Venezuela and Japanese imported liquor. Even more contentious issues loom: over loss of price supports for American farmers and over rulings about what kinds of genetically modified foods countries can offer to consumers on supermarket shelves. Underlying all the individual issues is a fundamental disagreement about the proper role of the trade organization. Proponents say it serves a crucial role in bolstering the world economy by tearing down trade barriers all over the globe. But opponents believe that the W.T.O. is using its power as an arbiter in trade disputes to systematically undermine laws passed by various countries to promote health, food safety, environmental protection and better working conditions. It is from those diverse concerns that a vigorous protest movement has emerged. Just how extensive or disruptive any protests will be is difficult to gauge, partly because even the groups themselves, more than 300 at latest count, are not exactly of one mind. "It demands an adventurous spirit, a forceful personality, superior intellectual ability, toughness of mind, and a high degree of personal integrity, courage and love of country." Give that copywriter a raise. With outrageous lies like these, Gen-Xers could sign up for the Gambino family with a clear conscience. Then there's the close -- "You will need to deal with fast-moving, ambiguous and unstructured situations that will test your resourcefulness to the utmost." "Patriotic" CIA Drug Smuggling Ambiguous? Ask CIA operative Oliver North, aka John Cathey. He could lie to Congress with a straight face. When veteran FBI Special Agent Richard M. Taus uncovered and reported evidence of CIA drug trafficking by a group called the "K-Team," he was set-up and sent to prison on phony charges. "The K-Team had a front operation with the patriotic sounding name National Freedom Institute and called its operation the 'Enterprise,' the same that repeatedly surfaced in the Iran Contra congressional hearings," writes Rodney Stich in his ground-breaking book Defrauding America. Taus discovered that that K-Team was a CIA operation, engaged in drug trafficking, the looting of savings and loans, and other activities related to what later became known as Irangate and Iraqgate. Another of Stich's sources, Gene "Chip" Tatum confirmed these allegations. I'd like to begin with a joke I heard recently -- or perhaps it's a truism... It is said that in the U.S. Congress the jokes there become laws, while the laws the members of Congress make are a joke. I wear two hats at this convention: Public Affairs/Media consultant to the AANP and independent investigative journalist. Today, I'll be wearing the second hat and speaking for myself. Some of you may disagree with me, but I hope that by proposing a point of view based on my research, I'll help to encourage a much-needed dialogue about the role of natural healing in the future of medicine in this country. For many years, in articles, lectures, and media appearances, I have provided people -- many of them seriously ill -- with information about the context of modern medicine. After years of reporting from the front lines of alternative medicine, it's my view that choosing an alternative or nontoxic course of treatment cannot be done properly without first understanding the context that has made finding clinical alternatives and employing them so daunting in our times. To illustrate how quickly events can move and change, six months ago -- when I drafted the abstract of this presentation for the convention program -- I wrote: ...problems in the medical care system appear to be simmering on the back burner. Yet, the American public's interest in natural healing continues to grow. I still stand very much by the second half of that statement. But the first part of the statement -- the back burner part -- has obviously changed. Six or eight months ago, in the wake of the Republican electoral victory in November, 1994, other concerns had moved to the forefront, ahead of health care. Many people in the country appeared to be breathing a sigh of relief, after the period from late 1993 through 1994, when conventional medicine and its role in our lives received probably the most intense, sustained, and hyped focus in history. The Clinton Administration had pushed an unprecented national health care reform plan which would have completely transformed and federalized the practice of medicine in this country. As the media reported in September., 1994, however, the Clintons' health care reform was finally pronounced dead somewhat after arrival. As we know now, by looking at the newspaper or by watching television, the problems with medicine -- specifically, with paying for it -- that were briefly dormant a half year ago have moved to the front burner once again. Since just before the Labor Day (1995) congressional recess, the issue of Medicare -- the federal system of medical welfare and entitlement -- has become the primary domestic political topic...AND a principal issue in the opening shots of the 1996 Presidential campaigns. It's about time that we look closely at Medicare -- and at the whole system of conventional medicine that remains the biggest single economic aspect of our society -- costing $1 trillion this year. The federal expenditure on medical care is exceeded only by the interest on the national debt and national defense. If change doesn't come, according to independent analysts, Medicare will run out of money very early in the next decade. Some of you may have seen coverage on TV newscasts last September 20 from the corridors of Congress where members shouted at each other about the Republicans' plans to reform Medicare, and the disagreement seemed like it might actually come to blows. To me that's a graphic image of the quickening breakdown of the orthodox medical edifice. But there's an even starker image that's emerged recently -- something new and disturbing that's a part of the evolution of this story, taking place in Southern California. Los Angeles County California, which is the second or first in the nation depending on what criteria you use, has been wrestling with a financial situation that is increasingly in critical condition, to reach for a medical metaphor. Largely contributing to that state is the out-of-control costs of the county's public medical care, in clinics and county hospitals. But despite written statements from FBI agents and technicians that recordings were made, no videotape from the surveillance cameras has ever been made public by the federal government. Critics of the government's actions in Waco say their efforts to obtain such videos have been blocked for years by the FBI and the Department of Justice. Congressional investigators who recently reopened investigations of the Waco tragedy said Wednesday that they cannot comment on how much information may have been disclosed to Congress about the FBI's use of closed-circuit cameras at Waco because the matter involves government secrets. "Until that information is declassified, we cannot discuss it," said Mark Corallo, spokesman for the House Government reform committee. An FBI spokesman said he would need to look into the matter further before commenting. A Justice Department spokesman did not return calls Wednesday night. Lawyers for surviving sect members who have filed a massive wrongful-death lawsuit against the federal government say they are outraged because they have been told repeatedly by government lawyers that the only FBI cameras in use on April 19 were infrared cameras deployed in airplanes high above the sect's compound. "We have asked for every possible form of recording known to man that could have been utilized at Mount Carmel," said the lead lawyer for the group, Michael Caddell of Houston. "We have been told that the only thing that exists are the [infrared] tapes and the surveillance tapes from FBI bugs inside the compound." But formal written statements, known as FBI 302s, obtained by The Dallas Morning News show that at least five FBI agents were sent to Waco to maintain closed-circuit cameras. "CCTV [closed-circuit TV] monitoring sites . . . were all around the compound," one FBI technical expert stated in a June 1993 interview detailed in a three-page FBI 302. "This enabled observers to see everything that was going on at the compound without showing themselves." One agent reported watching from the closed-circuit TV system as FBI tanks began firing tear gas into the compound on April 19, the documents state. A supervisor from the FBI's Quantico, Va., training academy said that the FBI's cameras were also running as the compound caught fire with sect leader David Koresh and more than 80 followers inside, according to a second FBI 302. The supervisor's June 1993 statement said that recordings were routinely made from the closed-circuit cameras that ringed the compund to help document FBI actions during the 51-day standoff. Mr. Caddell said he believes that FBI officials may have withheld information about the cameras because of the images that they captured on April 19. He noted that references to the closed-circuit television cameras were blacked out on the formal statements or FBI 302s that the Justice Department has so far disclosed in the civil wrongful-death lawsuit. Two retired Defense Department experts hired by Mr. Caddell's law firm and a third expert retained by congressional investigators have said that the FBI's infrared airborne videocameras recorded thermal flashes from the compound and from government positions on April 19 that could only have come from gunfire. FBI officials have insisted that FBI agents did not fire a single shot that day or at any other time during the 51-day siege. The compound fire erupted six hours into the FBI's tank and tear-gas assault, and government investigators ruled that it was deliberately set by the Branch Davidians. Government officials have said the repeated bursts of white flashes recorded on the infrared were caused by sunlight reflecting on mud puddles or shiny debris around the compound. "We remain confident that it was not gunfire," FBI spokesman John Collingwood said Wednesday. But outside experts, including a retired satellite imagry analyst who spent months studying the Waco infrared tape, said the rhythmic flashes could not have been caused by anything found in nature. Recently released copies of the FBI's infrared tapes show that many of the flashes emanating from the Branch Davidian compound and all of the flashes that come from areas near FBI tanks and other government positions occur on the back side of the compound. They were neighbored in southeast Turkey by a colony from Judah known as "Yadi." At one stage the Danites conquered much of present-day Turkey and parts of ancient Greece. They influenced the traditions and culture of those regions but did not settle there in great numbers. Some Danites settled in Ireland where they were known as Tuatha de Danaan or "Tribe of Dana." They also settled in Celtic Britain and in Welsh tradition are known as the people of Don. Danites were also in Scythia and from Scythia they moved to Denmark and many Danes are descended from Dan. On the one hand I do not agree with all of it, on the other it has points that suplement what I wrote concerning Dan and the Dananu (of southeast Turkey in ancient times) in my book "Lost Israelite Identity." I have a personal difficulty in accepting the Israelite origin of the Spartans. Something does not mesh. But I may be wrong. English historians tended to identify with the Athenians, German historians favored Sparta. Relatively speaking Athens was democratic and open minded, Sparta was military-minded, regimented, disciplined, deliberately oppressive to its subject population, and glorified cruel harshness. They were also brave and militarily proficient.
