The article is intersting, but must be seen in the context of the day. The
article below is not written by a christian but shows the recurring theme of
expansion , contraction and threat leads groups of people to adopt extremist
philosophies.

I'm afraid history hasnt ended.

I have gone through a period of self doubt about 'islamphobia' and taken
seriously the possibility the western view of Islam is a caricature. My
conclusion is that it is -- for bending over backwards to give in an equal
treatment and respect that any level playing evaluation of its human right
record would deny.

Here are excerpts from my correspondence with several reporters in 1996,
when
I and my writings were targeted by Islamic groups as part of a broader
pressure campaign. They tend to more than back up John's suspicions.
--
In essence what seems to be happening is the following. A cluster of
American Islamic pressure groups, some allegedly associated with Hamas and
Hezbollah, have apparently been approaching publishers, film companies, and
television enterprises for at least six years demanding that works be
altered, removed from circulation, and, in many cases, that manuscripts in
press not be published. Because publishers are literally afraid of being
bombed, they immediately silence all publicity surrounding the
intimidation.
Then, behind closed doors, they not only accede to Arab demands, but become
their own self-censors. As one Islamic victim, author Paul Fregosi (a man
with many respected historical works to his name) put it, his publisher
killed his book saying, "We've got to play the game according to Moslem
rules."

The silence of intimidated publishers, from Bob Guccione, Sr. to the
editorial staff at my own publishing house, Atlantic Monthly Press, is
absolute. They will not honestly answer a question on this issue from the
press. In fact, their silence has remained so complete that even John
Blesso, head of the anti-censorship group for the Author's Guild, was
unaware
of this ongoing campaign when we spoke in August, 1996. So was Orin
Teicher
of the American Bookseller's Association, with whom I'd worked on
censorship
issues (I founded and headed a national anti?censorship group from 1986
until
1989) for several years.

However Steven Emerson, perhaps the preeminent reporter on Arab terrorism's
American links, was fully cognizant of this campaign and had been tracking
it
for years when we spoke, which we have been doing since 1991. In fact, it
was he who pointed out that it is not limited to the publishing industry,
but
has targeted electronic media as well. Steven has done hour-long specials
on
the subject of Islamic extremism for CBS-tv, PBS-tv, and has written on the
topic for well over a decade, appearing in Newsweek, US News and World
Report
(where he was a staffer for several years), the American Journalism Review,
the Columbia Journalism Review, and many other outlets of similar or
greater
prestige.

You are likely to have some trouble getting through to Steven, since he has
received many death threats and is justifiably wary of calls from people he
does not know. However I copied him with our correspondence of last night.
Hopefully this will get you through.

Frankly, I was steamed because the head of the (Jewish) Anti Defamation
League had personally refused my request for aid, explaining that with the
lawsuits mounted against his organization by the American Arab
Anti-Discrimination Committee he was "already in more trouble than we can
handle." Even an allegedly aggressive organization like the ADL has thus
been silenced.

By the way, you'll notice that in the Agence France Presse story I sent as
part of my original letter, there was an interesting sentence. "The paper
quoted one Islamic expert who warned the publisher, Roger Boase, as saying
the book was 'offensive to anyone who cares about the truth.'" My guess is
that the "Islamic expert" is one of the pressure group representatives the
American Arab Anti-Discrimination Committee has been offering to publishers
to pre-censor their manuscripts. The rhetoric quoted has the ADC style.
This could mean that Little-Brown, a part of Time/Warner, Inc., is one of
th
companies which has secretively caved in to Arab intimidation and is
allowing
its books to be vetted in advance.

The subject matter of the work which was cancelled on the "expert's"
recommendation is the Islamic Crusade against Europe, which lasted from
roughly 730 AD (when Moslem conquerors took Spain and were on the verge of
seizing France) to 1540 AD (the last time Vienna was besieged by the
Turks).
Whereas the West's Crusades against Islam, which were brutal and rapacious,
lasted less than 200 years, the Islamic Holy War against Europe continued
for
800 years--four times as long. In that battle,

Address
William J. Clinton
President of the United States

THE PRESIDENT: Thank you very much. President Schwab, I think that it is an
indication of the importance of the topic and the importance of the World
Economic Forum that you have so many leaders from around the world here
today. I see, just scanning the audience, the President of Colombia, the
President of South Africa, Chairman Arafat, the Prime Ministers of Spain and
Turkey and a number of other leaders.

We have here with me today the Secretary of State, the Secretary of the
Treasury, the Secretary of Commerce, the Secretary of Energy and our Trade
Ambassador. There's no one home in Washington to take care of things. We
have a large delegation from the United States
Congress here; leaders from all over the world and business; public life;
the leader of the American Union Movement, John Sweeney, whom I know has
spoken to you.

So I think that maybe the presence of all these distinguished people in the
crowd is evidence of the importance of our being here and shows, in my mind,
one of the things we need to determine to do as a people.

The World Economic Forum has been at it, as you pointed out, for 30 years
now. The thing that I have appreciated most about your deliberations is your
consistent focus on the future. For example, you spotted the networking of
society before the Internet was out of its infancy. Both Vice President Gore
and my wife, Hillary, have spoken here; and I am glad, even though I am
late, to finally get in on the act.

Your theme, "New Beginnings, Making a Difference," it seems to me, is the
right theme. What I want to ask all of you to think about today is,
what does making a difference and new beginnings mean in an era of
globalization? What are the opportunities? What are the obligations? What
are the hazards? What new beginnings will make a positive difference? And,
perhaps the most difficult question of all: do we have the institutional and
organized mechanisms to make them?

As we know, in many ways the global economy was almost as integrated as it
is today 100 years ago. But after World War I, leaders in the United States
and Europe made what all now recognize were false and shortsighted choices.
Instead of partnership, they chose protectionism and isolationism. And for
decades, globalization went in reverse -- with utterly disastrous
consequences.

After the second war, the leaders were given a second chance. This time it
was clear that what was at stake was not simply the return of
prosperity, but the defense of freedom. They chose the path of economic and
political partnership, and set the stage for 50 years of growth across the
globe. No one can seriously argue that the world would be a better place
today if they had reverted to the old isolationism.

So today, at the start of a new century, the entire world, not simply Europe
and the United States, and the wealthiest nations of Asia, the
entire world finds itself at a crossroads. Globalization is revolutionizing
the way we work, the way we live and, perhaps most important, the way we
relate to each other across national boundaries. It is tearing down doors
and building up networks between nations and individuals, between economies
and cultures.

The obvious consequence is that we are growing ever more interdependent,
driven to be part of every vital network, understanding we cannot build our
own future without helping others to build theirs. Today, we know that
because of scientific and technological advance, we can change the equation
between energy use and economic growth. We can shatter the limits that time
and space pose to doing business and getting an education.

But, the openness and mobility, the flexible networking and sophisticated
communications technologies that have made globalization what it is -- so
totally consuming, all these factors have also made us more vulnerable to
some of our oldest problems.

Terrorism, narco-traffickers and organized criminals, they can use all this
new technology, too, and take advantage of the openness of societies and
borders. They present all of us with new security challenges in the new
century. The spread of disease; ethnic, racial, tribal, religious conflicts,
rooted in the fear of others who are different -- they seem to find ways to
spread in this globalized era. And the grinding poverty of more than a
billion people who live on less than a dollar a

[CTRL] AFP:China 'ready to fight US over Taiwan

2000-02-21 Thread DIG alfred webre

-Caveat Lector- A HREF="http://www.ctrl.org/"
/A -Cui Bono?-

China is already preparing electromagnetic pulse emp weapons for use against
US aircraft carriers in this war.

 China 'ready to fight US
 over Taiwan'

BERLIN -- China is ready to engage in war and even
nuclear conflict with the United States should fighting
break out over Taiwan, Der Spiegel magazine reports
on the basis of a supposedly-secret Chinese file.

"Document No. 65", allegedly produced by the
military sub-committee of the Chinese Community
Party's central committee, discussed the possible
course of a war over the disputed island claimed by
 China.

"We would have to make a military intervention as
early as possible, before the American troops are fully
operational," according to the document cited by the
 German magazine.

Faced with US bombardment of key sites and military
installations, the document stressed that China has
roughly the same level of conventional forces and
would benefit from a fight close to its own territory.

While arguing that the US would have little interest in
starting a nuclear war over the island, the file said that
Beijing would be ready to turn to its nuclear arsenal
 should circumstances demand.

"We are ready to defend every square centimetre of
 our country," said the document.

Dated August last year, the analysis would appear to
have been drafted during a low point in relations
between Beijing and Taipei caused by Taiwanese
President Lee Teng-hui's insistence that his country
should enjoy "state-to-state" ties with China.

China considers Taiwan a breakaway province and
has repeatedly warned that it would use force if
necessary to ensure its return to the mainland. -- AFP

[CTRL] Bush wins S.C. by outspending McCain

2000-02-21 Thread Nurev Ind Research

-Caveat Lector- A HREF="http://www.ctrl.org/"
/A -Cui Bono?-

Bush's big bucks firewall saved him in South
Carolina

February 21, 2000

By DON VAN NATTA Jr. and JOHN M. BRODER

In the South Carolina primary, Gov. George W.
Bush reaped the enormous benefits of his
overstuffed campaign treasury, which allowed
him
to refuse federal matching funds and spend as
much as he needed to win.

And while his heavy spending in South
Carolina
and elsewhere has depleted that treasury, he
is
still in a position to significantly outspend
the
McCain campaign for the next few weeks, even
as
he launches a new round of fund raising.

According to the estimates of several senior
Republican fund-raisers, Bush's campaign
spent
roughly $5 million in South Carolina on an
aggressive campaign that flooded the airwaves
with attacks against Sen. John McCain and the
winning message that the Texas governor is
``a
reformer with results.''

Because McCain has no choice but to accept
federal matching funds, his campaign was
forced
to abide by the state's spending cap. Sunday,
McCain blamed his defeat on being outspent.
``One
of the reasons why we had a little trouble
getting our message out in South Carolina
because
we were outspent 5-, 6-, 10-to-1,'' McCain
said
Sunday on NBC's ``Meet the Press.''

The margin might not have been that great,
and it
may be months before each campaign's spending
totals in South Carolina are revealed.

Most of all, the emphatic Bush victory in
South
Carolina illustrates the overarching
importance
of money in this year's presidential
campaign.

``If there is a Bush firewall in this
presidential election, it turns out to be
money,
not South Carolina or any other individual
state,'' said Fred Wertheimer, a campaign
finance
expert and the president of Democracy 21, a
nonpartisan public policy group here.
``Bush's
financial flooding of South Carolina is the
first
on-the-ground, concrete example of just what
his
huge money advantage really means in this
election.''

Despite the pace of his spending, Bush still
holds a strong financial edge over McCain. In
Michigan, the Bush campaign intends to
outspend
McCain by more than 25 percent; the Bush
campaign
expects to spend $2.6 million on
advertisements
compared with the $2 million that the McCain
campaign said it planned to spend.

And that spending difference could widen in
some
of the 13 states that have Republican
contests on
March 7, such as New York, California,
Massachusetts and Missouri.

Scott McClellan, a Bush spokesman, declined
Sunday to disclose how much money the Bush
campaign had in the bank.

McCain has about $8 million remaining,
including
more than $6 million in matching funds the
campaign says it has qualified for but has
not
yet received.

Me, Charlie Trie and Beijing's Mystery Woman: The White House Visitor Now
Sentenced to Death Johnny Chung
February 14, 2000

The Los Angeles Times reported last week that former Clinton fund-raiser
Charlie "Yah Lin" Trie admitted to the FBI that his involvement in the 1996
Clinton-Gore campaign finance scandal went much deeper than was previously
known, according to FBI documents recently obtained by the paper.

It turns out that Trie confessed to investigators that the notorious
Buddhist Temple fund raiser attended by Vice President Gore that April was
actually Trie’s idea. Only later, at the request of Chinagate figure John
Huang, did he turn the project over to longtime Gore fund-raiser Maria Hsia.

Hsia went on trial last week for election fraud based on charges arising
from that event.

Charlie Trie also told the FBI that he had a friendly relationship with
first lady Hillary Clinton. Not only did Mrs. Clinton accept gifts from him,
she personally conducted tours through the White House for Trie's friends.
If and when it all comes out, his testimony could spell trouble for Mrs.
Clinton's bid to be the next U.S. Senator from New York.

But it was something else Trie admitted that most caught my eye. The onetime
Little Rock restaurateur also acknowledged that he had a business
relationship with an officer in China's Army, Col. Lin Ruoquing.

The Times reported that Col. Lin supplied Trie with license plates
registered to the People's Liberation Logistics Department when he was in
Beijing. In turn, Trie invited her to become a member of the Democratic
National Committee's Business Leadership Forum.

I, too, knew Lin Ruoquing. But in all our dealings she kept her position in
the Chinese military completely secret from me. To me she was Chairwoman
Lin, a simple businesswoman, who headed up China's Three Best Pharmaceutical
company. Only later would I learn of Lin's true importance.

It turns out Chairwoman Lin was no mere Chinese army colonel who controlled
a drug company. In reality, as I would later find out, she was one of the
most powerful military officers in all of the People's Liberation Army.

Lin Ruoquing was the person in charge of China's one-child policy for the
entire millions-strong People's Liberation Army. As such, it was she who
determined how big the families of China's military class could be. Anyone
in the armed forces who wanted a second child had to secure permission from
her office. That meant she and her underlings had the power to enforce the
one-child rule with forced abortions when necessary.

But now, five years after I terminated my relationship with Chairwoman Lin,
she sits in a Beijing jail – sentenced to death, according to reports from
Hong Kong, after being found guilty on charges of massive corruption.

What the Los Angeles Times reported about Chairwoman Lin barely scratched
the surface. My part of her story is another key puzzle piece in the
Clinton-Gore campaign finance scandal. I have shared this information with
the Justice Department as part of my agreement to cooperate fully with their
investigation. Now, for the first time, I can share it with the public.

In the spring of 1995 Chinese businessman Yi-Qiou Chen came to the United
States with several fellow entrepreneurs. He was part of a delegation headed
up by the president of the Chinese Entrepreneur Association in Beijing.

The group included approximately 25 businessmen who had come to the U.S. in
search of trade opportunities. That's how Chen came to visit the office of
my fax broadcasting business in Los Angeles. During that meeting Yi-Qiou
Chen took me aside and told me, "Next time you visit China I would like you
to come to see my company." I agreed.

As fate would have it, I was scheduled to travel to China just weeks later.
It was on this trip to Beijing that Chen introduced me to Chairwoman Lin,
whom he identified as chief of Three Best Pharmaceutical. His own company
was a subsidiary of Chairwoman Lin's operation.

Having no idea that Lin was a colonel in the People's Liberation Army, I
thought I was just dealing with Chinese business people. Just like in
Washington, I was the new kid in town in Beijing, too. This was only my
second or third visit to the People's Republic.

Looking back on this episode, I see now there were clues that Yi-Qiou Chen
and Chairwoman Lin were no mere Chinese business executives.

For instance, my hosts were able to put me up in Beijing's state house, the
Diaoyutai – in building number two, which offered

[CTRL] Fwd: McCain: Arizona Republic Investigation

2000-02-21 Thread DIG alfred webre

McCain Watch www.mccainwatch.com is now in operation...

"After three months of investigation by some of its best reporters, The
Arizona Republic published a whopping two-page exposé in last Sunday's
paper proving that, as far as anybody knew, U.S. Senator John McCain had
absolutely nothing -- as in nada, zilch, diddly-squat -- to do with the
murder of one-time newspaper writer Ron Bianchi.
Not only that, but the Republic reported that its three months of digging,
probing, seeking out clues, analyzing, tracking down leads and generally
leaving no stone unturned provided "no evidence sustaining Bianchi's
claim" that McCain had an affair with performer Connie Stevens

"With that in mind, I would like to report that after three intense . . .
hours of exhaustive investigation (two of which may have looked like lunch
but actually involved the grillings of "sources") I'm prepared to state
with complete confidence that Sen. McCain was in no way involved with the
disappearance of Teamster boss Jimmy Hoffa, the collapse of the Arizona
Cardinals and the mysterious success of Who Wants to Be a

"However, after three months of investigation, the Republic reported that
"Gila County Attorney Jerry DeRose and sheriff's detectives would find no
evidence whatsoever of an affair between McCain and Stevens or of any mob
ties."
Also, in a taped interview with McCain, Gila County Deputy Byron Mills
told the senator, "I will put it in writing that we have absolutely zero
evidence to prove that you had anything, or any knowledge even, about this
man's death. . . ."
Fine, but what about JonBenet Ramsey and Vince Foster?...

"I've done some checking. McCain is not mentioned in any of these reports
I've read concerning the death of President Clinton's late friend and
lawyer, and, so far as I know, he has yet to be questioned by police in
Boulder, Colo.
I've been unable to find out if O.J. Simpson -- on a nationwide tour of
golf courses in search of the "real" killer -- has removed McCain from his
list of potential suspects.
However, "sources" tell me it's unlikely McCain had anything to do with
the kidnapping of heiress Patty Hearst. That is, unless he concocted the
plot while locked up in Hanoi.
I've also been assured that McCain's name has not surfaced in court
proceedings related to a triangle UFO, big as a football field, reported
over Phoenix three years ago.
Nor has a credible witness come forward with any proof of a McCain-Elvis
connection."

STABILIZER CHECK ON ALASKA AIRLINES PLANE FOUND EQUIPMENT WELL WITHIN
REQUIRED WEAR LIMITS

Contrary to misleading reports in the media, the horizontal stabilizer
mechanism of the Alaska Airlines MD-83 involved in the Flight 261
accident was found to be well within wear limit tolerances in a 1997
heavy maintenance check.

A C-5 check was performed on the aircraft (tail number N963AS) on
September 29, 1997 at the Alaska Airlines maintenance facility in
Oakland. The initial examination of the jackscrew and gimbal nut
assembly of the horizontal stabilizer indicated that the endplay of the
jackscrew was .040 inch, within allowable limits prescribed by Boeing,
the plane's manufacturer who sets those limits.

Boeing's instructions for mechanics performing this check state: "Check
that endplay limits are between .003 and .040 inch. Readings in excess
of above are cause for replacement of acme jackscrew and nut."

The instructions also state that the measurements should be repeated
"several times to ensure consistent results."

The assembly was re-examined on September 30, 1997, indicating that the
endplay was .033 -- well within standards. This test was rechecked five
additional times to ensure consistency of results and each time the
results indicated the endplay was well within standards.

Under the maintenance schedule approved by the FAA and recommended by
Boeing, the endplay of the aircraft's jackscrew and gimbal nut assembly
is conducted every other C-check and was scheduled to be reexamined on
this aircraft in June 2000. The tolerances provided by the manufacturer
are designed so that the aircraft can fly safely until its next
scheduled inspection.

The instructions for this check are included in Boeing's maintenance
manual, and their step-by-step instructions for mechanics. Alaska
Airlines used those instructions in its maintenance task card.

This test is one that is routinely signed off on by both a mechanic and
an inspector to provide an extra level of scrutiny.

Since the multiple rechecks of the jackscrew and gimbal nut assembly
found it to be within specifications, no action was necessary under
Boeing's maintenance manual which is approved by the FAA.

FACTS REGARDING OAKLAND MAINTENANCE INVESTIGATIONS

In recent days, a number of questions have been asked regarding the FAA
and U.S. Attorney's Office investigations into maintenance practices in
Oakland, Calif.

The following information is meant to clarify Alaska's position on these
investigations and reiterate that they have not involved the Alaska
Airlines' aircraft involved with Flight 261 on Jan. 31, 2000.

OVERVIEW

The Oakland Maintenance Base is the primary location where Alaska
performs heavy checks on its Boeing MD-80 fleet. Heavy checks on its
Boeing 737 fleet are primarily performed in Seattle. There are two
parallel investigations into maintenance practices at Oakland. One was
conducted by the Federal Aviation Administration and another is
continuing by the U.S. Attorney's Office.
Alaska has fully cooperated with both the FAA and the U.S. Attorney's
Office in their investigations and has provided all maintenance records
either agency has requested during their investigations.
When these investigations began, Alaska asked the FAA specifically if
any of its aircraft should be grounded and was told by the FAA that it
was not necessary.

THE SOURCE OF THE ALLEGATIONS

The source of the allegations leveled at the airline is John Liotine, a
lead AP mechanic (Airframe and Powerplant) for Alaska in Oakland. Mr.
Liotine is currently on administrative leave, receiving full pay and
benefits. He was placed on leave because his presence in the workplace
has been disruptive to operations.
Mr. Liotine served briefly as president of the Aircraft Mechanics
Fraternal Association local in Oakland until he was removed from office
by mechanics. Mr. Liotine was passed over for promotion by two of the
supervisors he has accused, one of whom started work for Alaska on the
same day Mr. Liotine began his employment with the company. Mr.
Liotine's allegations generally focus on a final check known as the Post
Maintenance Final Run Checklist (PMFRC). This check was developed
specifically by Alaska and is above and beyond the manufacturer's
required maintenance program. Mr. Liotine did complain to Alaska that
the PMRFC should be performed later in the heavy check process. Alaska
Airlines was investigating his complaint when the government
investigations began. Contrary to Mr. Liotine's assertions, he did not
report alleged falsification of documents to the company before going to
the FAA.
Mr. Liotine contends that Alaska employs too few mechanics and that they
are under-compensated. Those claims are untrue.

THE FAA INVESTIGATION

Based on Mr. Liotine's allegations, the FAA in Los Angeles has conducted
an administrative investigation and proposed a

2000-02-21 Thread Kris Millegan

consortiumnews.com - http://www.consortiumnews.com

One of America's most troubling historical chapters is the case of slain
civil rights leader Martin Luther King Jr. The Nobel Peace Prize laureate,
who led the battle against racial segregation, was assassinated in
Memphis, Tennessee, on April 4, 1968.

The authorities remain convinced that his assassin was a career criminal
named James Earl Ray. But the story was never that simple. For years, J.
Edgar Hoover's FBI had treated King as an enemy of the state, with that
alarm growing when King opposed the Vietnam War and called for a poor
people's march on Washington.

Last December, after a civil trial brought by King's family, a 12-member
jury challenged the conventional wisdom of a lone gunman. But the major
media attacked the trial as bizarre and ridiculed the King family as
conspiracy theorists.

A new investigative article at Consortiumnews.com reexamines that case and
sorts through what the case may have contributed to the historical record.

Everyone into the Battle!

We are closing in on 300 subscribers to this e-wire list after a little
over a month of operation. I am trying to learn more about how to change
the website so we can update it regularly.

I believe we will grow to over 1000 members by early summer. Maybe more.
This is enough to decisively impact the entire nation on this issue.

Here is what we need to be done, in no particular order:

1. Hopefully find Citizen for a Fair Vote Count representatives who are
willing to go public in each state, and in every one of the 3075
counties in the United States. We already have representatives in New
Hampshire, Indiana, Ohio, California and Iowa. And I really haven’t put
out a call yet. But let me do so now. If you are willing to be a
contact, either publicly known, or not publicly known, please let me
know by e-mail or by writing to Citizens for a Fair Vote Count, PO Box
11339, Cincinnati, Ohio 45211.

2. In each state we need to get something in writing from each county on
what vote tabulating system they use, and also get answers, or refusal
to give answers, to a few key questions. On our website at
www.networkamerica.org we have the button for the key questions to ask
and the buttom for the report for each county and each state. This whole
system needs to be activated, and we will definitely do that soon.

3. We then need to find, county by county, the person or persons who
will network with others in the state to progressively inform all the
“common people” and “average citizens” about the meeting held in each
county by each Party recognized in that state every two years, usually
around May of the even years, at which the party leaderships are chosen.
This meeting produces the individuals who have the power to reinstate
honest elections.

4. During THIS election, we need to e-mail a message with particular
points about a return to honest elections to every Congressman, every
state legislator, every city councilman, every newspaper editor, and
reporter, every talk show host, and every TV personality, among others —
including opinion molders in each area. We will provide a message that
can be used verbatim – and “talking points” which can be used to produce
one’s own letter.

5. Then we will post on the website all the people who have been
notified by a citizen of the problem. Plus any response they give. And
if they are willing to endorse the legislation we will recommend to
restore honest, verifiable elections.

6. We will also post on the website what system is used in each county
and who has the power to change the system to paper ballots, and what
are the dynamics in each county as citizens begin to demand change to
honest, verifiable elections.

7. The Constitution Party under Howard Phillips has already put the need
for change to a verifiable paper ballot system in its platform. It would
be good if the Reform Party would do the same, and the Libertarian
Party, and the Green Party, for which Ralph Nader is about to announce
for President. Now, readers of this list can probably guess that I am a
Pat Buchanan / Howard Phillips supporter, broadly speaking. However, my
position is that left – right coalitions are possible and beneficial
here. I worked successfully with Jim Collier off and on until Jim's
death in 1998. Any way we can get back to honest elections will begin to
break the power of those who want to regiment mankind in a financial
straight-jacket.

This is going to be a fun year. I hope that all of you will consider
joining the fun that can be generated by “taking this issue to the
powers that be.” The emperor both has no clothes and is “naked to our
sword” if I can mix and abuse analogies here. It’s 1776 all over again –
but this time you are there. Everyone into the Battle!

Hello,

On searching using Deja.com I found your interest in infrasound. Could you
tell me if a beat frequency of about 12 hertz derived from two higher
frequencies in the audio spectrum would have the debilitating effects of the
pure tone at that frequency? I am thinking of constructing a device, as a
burglar deterrent, using two large diameter pipes of slightly different
length to generate two tones 12 hertz (or so) apart. I would be most
grateful for your comments.

[CTRL] Fwd: INFOTERRA: Ecofascism

2000-02-21 Thread DIG alfred webre

Hello,
The following is an excerpt from a new Green Web Bulletin (#68), entitled
"Ecofascism: What is It? A Left Biocentric Analysis". The complete bulletin
(about 36k or 5,400 words) is available from the Green Web
[EMAIL PROTECTED]. The material below gives some flavour of the
bulletin.

Best,
David Orton
* * * * * * * * * * * * * * * *

This bulletin is an examination of the term and concept of "ecofascism."
It is a strange term/concept to really have any conceptual validity. While
there have been in the past forms of government which were widely considered
to be fascist - Hitler's Germany, Mussolini's Italy and Franco's Spain, or
Pinochet's Chile, there has never yet been a country that has had an
"eco-fascist" government or, to my knowledge, a political organization which
has declared itself publicly as organized on an ecofascist basis.

Fascism comes in many forms. Contemporary fascist-type movements (often
an alliance of conservative and fascist forces), like the National Front
(France), the Republicans (Germany), the Freedom Movement (Austria), the
Flemish Block (Belgium), etc., may have ecological concerns, but these are
not at the center of the various philosophies and are but one of a number of
issues used to mobilize support - for example crime-fighting, globalization
and economic competition, alleged loss of cultural identity because of large
scale immigration, etc. For any organization which seeks some kind of popular
support, even a fascist organization, it would be hard to ignore the
environment. But these would be considered "shallow" not defining or "deep"
concerns for deep ecology supporters. None of these or similar organizations
call themselves ecofascists. While for fascists, the term "fascist" will have
positive connotations (of course not for the rest of us), "ecofascist" as
used around t!
 he!
environmental and green movements, has no recognizable past or present
political embodiment, and has only negative connotations. So the use of the
term "ecofascism" in Canada or the United States is meant to convey an insult!

Many supporters of the deep ecology movement have been uncomfortable and
on the defensive concerning the question of ecofascism, because of criticism
levelled against them, such as for example from some supporters of social
ecology, who present themselves as more knowledgable on social matters. (The
term "social ecology" implies this.) This bulletin is meant to change this
situation. I will try to show why I have arrived at the conclusion, after
investigation, that "ecofascism" has come to be used mainly as an attack
term, with social ecology roots, against the deep ecology movement and its
supporters plus, more generally, the environmental movement. Thus,
"ecofascist" and "ecofascism", are used not to enlighten but to smear.

Deep ecology has as a major and important focus the insight that the
ecological crisis demands a basic change of values, the shift from
human-centered anthropocentrism to ecocentrism and respect for the natural
world. But critics from within the deep ecology movement (see for example the
1985 publication by the late Australian deep ecologist Richard Sylvan, _A
Critique of Deep Ecology_ and his subsequent writings like the 1994 book _The
Greening of Ethics_ , and the work by myself in various Green Web
publications concerned with helping to outline the left biocentric
theoretical tendency and the inherent radicalism within deep ecology), have
pointed out that to create a mass movement informed by deep ecology, there
must be an alternative cultural, social, and economic vision to that of
industrial capitalist society, and a political theory for the mobilization
of human society and to show the way forward. These are urgent and exciting
tasks facing the deep ecology movement,!
  a!
nd extend beyond what is often the focus for promoting change as mainly
occurring through individual consciousness raising, important as this is, the
concern of much mainstream deep ecology.

The purpose of this essay is to try and enlighten; to examine how the
ecofascist term/concept has been used, and whether "ecofascism" has any
conceptual validity within the radical environmental movement. I will argue
that to be valid, this term has to be put in very specific contexts - such as
anti-Nature activities as carried out by the "Wise Use" movement, logging and
the killing of seals, and possibly in what may be called "intrusive research"
into wildlife populations by restoration ecologists. Deep ecology supporters
also need to be on guard against negative political tendencies, such as
ecofascism, within this world view.

I will also argue that the social ecology-derived use of "ecofascist"
against deep ecology should be criticized and discarded as sectarian,
human-centered, self-serving dogmatism, and moreover, even from an anarchist
perspective, totally in opposition to the open-minded spirit say of anarchist
Emma Goldman. (See her

(Please forward this on to your friends!)

I urge all of you to boycott "The Beach", starring Leonardo DiCaprio and
produced by 20th Century Fox, because filming the movie destroyed the
habitat of a pristine beach (in a national park!) in Thailand.

To get better shots, the moviemakers bulldozed the beach to make it wider
and flatter. They also bulldozed and removed native vegetation, and
planted non-native vegetation. Additionally, the extensive erosion caused
by the bulldozing and native plant removal is expected to damage the
ecosystem of the surrounding coral reefs and inundate them with loose
sand.

20th Century Fox is being sued by environmental activists, but I expect
any amount awarded will pale in comparison to the profits Fox will make
from the movie.

Tell 20th Century Fox that bulldozing national parks and destroying
ecosystems will hurt them at the box office.

Please boycott "The Beach."

Below is an Associated Press article printed in The Register Guard
on Feb. 10, 2000, page 11 A.

FILM CREW ACCUSED OF RUINING THAI BEACH

* Environment: Movie makers' efforts to improve the view were
destructive, activists say.

By Thaksina Khaikaew
The Associated Press

MAYA BAY, Thailand -- "The Beach," which opened in London on Wednesday
starring Leonardo DiCaprio, tells the story of an amoral backpacker whose
quest for the perfect tropcial beach leads him to a secret commune on a
remote Thai island.

But utopia isn't quite what it seems and paradise turns into bloody
savagery. Likewise, the image of sunny, sandy perfection achieved in
making the 20th Centruy Fox film has destroyed the once-pristine beach
where it was shot, environmentalists say.

Maya Bay, a strip of sand and vegetation backed by dramatic cliffs, is
located on Phi Leh island, part of a national park about 350 miles south
of Bangkok.

Many of its islands have been blighted by developers who bribed corrupt
officials to look the other way while bungalows and hotels sprang up in
theoretically protected areas. Phi Leh and the beach at Maya Bay were
largely spared, providing a setting worthy of Alex Garland's best-selling
novel.

But for filmmakers, led by director Danny Boyle and producer Andrew
Macdonald, who earned fame with "Shallow Grave" and "Trainspotting," it
wasn't quite perfect enough.

After obtaining permits from the Forestry Department and paying a $110,000
damage depost, the filmmakers brought in bulldozers to widen and flatten
the beach and strip away native grasses, scrub and other vegetation. They
also removed a lot of garbage that had washed ashore.

Seizing on the film's high profile, activists who had for years
unsuccessfully campaigned against the environmental damage to Thailand's
parks joined with local residents in a series of demonstrations.

They suceeded in getting the number of coconut trees--a nonindigenous
species--planted by the filmmakers reduced from about 100 to 60, but they
lost court challenges to impose a restraining order on filming.

The filmmakers pledged to restore the beach to its original state and set
stakes in the sand to prevent erosion.

But by the time the monsoon season ended in November, it became clear the
stakes didn't work nearly as well as native vegetation. More sand than
anyone could remember was washed away by the annual storms.

Nevertheless, Thai tourism officials, eager to cash in on publicity from
the film, have offered travel agents free trips to Thailand for so-called
"DiCaprio Tours"--further angering activists, who have brought a $2.6
million lawsuit against Fox, the Forestry Department and the Agriculture
Ministry for damage to Maya Bay.

"Their campaign is about greed, not reality," said Prasertpongse Sornuwat,
a local council member. "There is no beautiful beach anymore. They just
want to cash in on the movie, with no concern about the environmental
impact."

Some tourists agree.

"The beach looks awful," said Alastair Short, 40, a tourist from
Worcester, England, visiting the island with friends. "We decided to come
by and see with our own eyes what had happened. It's just a shame."

"I've gotten close to 30 signatures a day from tourists who promise they
won't patronzie the movie, because it was made by damaging the environment
of the island," Prasertpongse said.

Still, Thai theater owners say they are not worried and have plastered
cinemas with posters of DiCaprio emerging from the sea. The film will be
released in Thailand next month. It opens Friday in U.S. theaters.

A lawyer for 20th Century Fox defended the filmmakers, saying they took
every precaution and the erosion was caused by unusually severe storms,
not the filmmakers' actions.

MILEVA MARIC EINSTEIN
From High Hopes to Tragedy
By Olga B. Markovich
Albert Einstein has been chosen TIMEs Person of
the Century as a pre-eminent scientist in a century dominated by
science. In 1905 he produced three papers that changed science
forever. He would be awarded the 1921 Nobel Prize in Physics.
Einsteins story is well known, but little is known about his soulmate
- the forgotten Einstein, the Serbian physics student
Mileva Maric. In the 1900s, after years of resistance by Einsteins
executors determined to protect his image, letters and papers have come to light
which have brought the name of Mileva Maric into the halls of academia and modem
media. Described as Einsteins companion, colleague and confidant, her influence on his most
creative years has given rise to much speculation. Einstein went on to great
success and fame, but Marics high academic hopes and dreams ended in
despair.
In the book Einsteins Wife, Andrea Gabor
would describe her in these words: she possessed an unmistakable spark of
genius, a dedication to mathematics and science that was unusual for anyone at
that age (16), and in that time and place, extraordinary for a girl. She
would go on to become one of the first women ever to study physics at a
university.

The Forgotten
Einstein
Milos Maric
was born in Kac in 1846, a descendant from one of the Serbian families who fled
Turkish rule to Vojvodina in the Great Migration of 1690. He attended military
school at Novi Sad and his 13-year army career brought him to Titel, a town on
the Tisa River. There he met Marija Ruzic, daughter of a wealthy land-owning
family who were devout Catholic benefactors. They were named in 1867 by the Rev.
Tanasije Popovic in the Crkva Uspenja Presvete Bogorodice. The marriage was
blessed with three children: Mileva born on December 19, 1875 and christened by
the same priest who officiated at her parents marriage, Zorka in 1883 and
Milos in 1885. The family celebrated their Krsna Slava on January 9th
- St. Stefan the Martyr.
After his army discharge, Milos Maric became an official
at district courts in Ruma and Vukovar; he was also an official in Novi
Sads Serbian Reading Room. In 1877 he bought property in Kac, three farms
in Banja Luka and built substantial homes in Titel, Novi Sad and Kac. (The home
in Kac was destroyed by the partisans during World War II as they ravaged the
homes of wealthy landowners who were unable or refused to give provisions to the
army.)
Mileva (ca1led Mitza by her family), who was born with a
congenital hip displacement, was Milos favourite child and he taught her
many things so that by the age of seven she was reading, doing simple arithmetic
and was fluent in Serbian and German. She also read music and played her
fathers favourite songs on the tamburitza.

Brilliant Student
Trailblazer
Seeing the potential in his daughter, Milos pushed her
to strive for excellence. She attended elementary school in Ruma and in 1866 she
began the first form of the Serbian girls high school in Novi Sad.
From 1888 to 1890 she attended school in Sremska Mitrovica when, according
to Highfield and Carter in their book The Private Lives of Albert Einstein,
her father sent her across the border into Serbia. Milos wanted his
daughter educated at a gymnasium, but those in Austro-Hungary were for boys
only. The same barriers no longer existed in Serbia, and Mileva entered the
fifth form of the gymnasium at Sabac. She excelled in mathematics and
physics, German and French, and produced detailed sketches of local village
scenes. Here she met Ruzica Drazic with whom she would later share student
lodgings in Zurich.
In May 1892 Milos was appointed to the High Court in
Zagreb (Agram) and Mileva, by special dispensation, was enrolled as a private
pupil at the citys all-male Royal Classical High School which, write
Highfield and Carter, made her one of the first young women in the
Austro-Hungarian Empire to sit alongside boys in a high-school
classroom.
She was admitted to the girls high school in
Zurich on November 14, 1894. She passed her matriculation exam in the spring of
1896 and began medical studies at Zurich University. She studied medicine for
one summer term and in October switched to Section VIA of the Swiss Federal
Polytechnical School (ETII) reading for a diploma that would qualify her to
teach mathematics and physics at secondary schools. At close to 2l, she was the
only woman to join Section VIA that year and was only the fifth woman to be
accepted at the school.
She also audited courses for one semester at the
University of Heidelburg. Returning to Zurich, she studied math and physics and
worked on her dissertation on the topic of thermoconduction in the hope of
completing her

The Search
for Lieserl
Michele
Zackheims book Einsteins. Daughter: The Search for
Lieserl is an excellent book which can be read
on several levels: a mystery describing the search for the first child of Albert
Einstein and Mileva Maric Einstein; as a biography of Mileva Maric; as the story
of her family and how her relatives remember her; as a depiction of life in
Vojvodina and Serbia both at the beginning and the end of the 20th
century.
Zackheim realized that in order to find the child, she
would have to know Mileva and in order to know her she would have to understand
the cultural heart of Serbia. The book is based on more than one
hundred interviews and vast research through Serbian archives, history and
literature so that Zackheim could tell the story iz prve
ruke.
It is also the story of descendants, of Milevas
relatives today -
second cousin Dragisa Maric, first cousin
Ljubica Maric, second cousin Jovan Ruzic, first cousin Sofija Galic Golubovic
- and descendants of Milevas best friends
- Helene Savics grandson Dr. Milan Popovic and
Milana Bota Stefanovics grandchild Ivana Stefanovic. Previously unknown
letters and photographs were shown to Zackheim so she could tell Marics
story.
Marics biographer was a Serbian mathematician and
physicist, Desanka Djuric-Trbuhovic, whose U Senci Alberta Ajnstajna
was first published in 1969 and has since been
published in German and translated into English. This is the most complete and
definitive biography written about Maric and is the primary source about her
life consulted by writers and researchers. Zackheim consulted her son, Professor
Ljubomir Trbuhovic, in the writing of her book.
Einsteins
Daughter is a book of memories which brings
the Maric era to new light. There is a description of her maternal
great-grandfather Ruzic who ordered two enormous brass bells from
Vienna for Titels newly built church. The bells traveled by train
through Central Europe, connecting in Budapest, then passing through the
bountiful plains that surrounded Novi Sad and on to Kac, Budisava, Sajkas,
Vilovo, Lok, finally stopping at Titel. Since the church was three kilometres
from the train depot, a team of six oxen, their horns
adorned with apples, and a wagon were brought from Ruzics ranch. The
bells were loaded onto the wagon in silence. Ruzic walked alongside as the small
procession commenced its journey to the church. People from the village and
countryside lined the dirt road and tossed brightly colored pieces of fabric at
them. Ruzic and the oxen were covered in color. At the church, the priest gave a
blagoslov, a blessing, and sprinkled the bells with holy water. The bells were
then hoisted up into the tower with ropes and installed by local carpenters. In
two hours, they rang out over the village. During his lifetime Ruzic
never acknowledged his gift. Bragging was considered as impolite as speaking
about family disgraces.
There are also memories of Albert Einstein in Novi Sad
while visiting the Marics on Kisacka Street. He liked to spend time at the Queen Elizabeth Cafe which formed
part of the hotel owned by Lazar Dundjerski one of the wealthiest men in
Vojvodina. Sitting on the back patio, Einstein would read and visit. Even
today Novi Sad residents tell stories about Alberts loquacity and
laughter. It was on this patio that Albert was remembered to have said he was
not against moderate alcohol consumption.
Voila, he exclaimed, the
Serb drinks from birth until death. When he is born, as he matures, when he
travels, when he gets married, when he gets buried - and yet Serbs are a nation of geniuses. That is how I
perceive them, based on my wife.
Zackheim also describes the church where the
Einstein sons were
christened. Nikolajevska, St. Nicholas, the oldest church in Novi Sad,
was constructed in the baroque style around 1730. Inside, the walls are
decorated with gold filigree that catches the light coming through the stained
glass windows and from the hundreds of flickering candles. The patriarch of the
church, Father Teodor Milic, was a famous singer, preacher, political radical,
and a personal friend of Milos Marics (Milevas
father).
The author also touches on the Jews in
Vojvodina.
Jews were a distinct minority in the villages of
Vojvodina. ...Although an unspoken separation existed, anti-Semitism was not
prevalent among the Serbs. Wherever there was a Catholic majority, especially in
German and Hungarian neighborhoods, there were incidents of anti-Semitism, but
the Orthodox Church was tolerant and not openly prejudiced against
Jews.
Zackheim must be
commended for the vast amount of research she did in the archives of Vojvodina
and Serbia. It is heartbreaking to read that great chunks of the past have
been destroyed in the chaos of war. She tells the tale of how even today
the

Lyndon LaRouche is right?!!? Well only Homer could say that.

But that article is as detached from reality as the propaganda one can read
at the websites for the Korean Central News Agency or David Icke! Take the
following statement at the start of the article:

"Lyndon LaRouche, who is seeking the Democratic presidential nomination,
detonated a bombshell during an address at a Detroit town meeting last night,
that veteran political observers say could result in completely derailing
Vice President Al Gore's drive for the Democratic Party's top spot."

Top marks to the author of the article for contributing to the LaRouche
personality cult, which permeates the EIR website. Pity nothing new is
contributed...

And so, the relationship between all the posts and Kosovaria and No Ireland
is revealed. And the lounge duo Bill Jeff and "Poodles" Tony is at the centre
of them both. Odds? AER

From www.cato.org/dailys/02-18-00.html

{{Begin}}
February 18, 2000
Belfast in the Balkans
by Gary Dempsey

Gary Dempsey is a foreign policy analyst at the Cato Institute.

This month has been the bloodiest in Kosovo since June, 1999, when NATO troops
arrived after 78 days of punishing air strikes against Yugoslavia. What is
different about this latest eruption of violence is that NATO peacekeepers and
ethnic Albanians were openly shooting at one another for the first time. During
the clash, which took place in the polarized town of Kosovska Mitrovica, ethnic
Albanian snipers shot and wounded two French soldiers. The French responded by
killing one rooftop sniper and wounding at least four others. NATO says that it
has since arrested more than 40 people suspected of involvement in the
bloodletting.

The clash between NATO troops and ethnic Albanians is not surprising. As a
candid intelligence officer with the UN Mission in Kosovo (UNMIK) explained to
me in November, the separatist Kosovo Liberation Army (KLA) has not disarmed
and disbanded as the White House claims, but instead maintains an underground
network that has "more than enough weapons to start another war." The
relationship between NATO's peacekeepers and the underground KLA, he added, can
be summarized in the following way: "We are their tool, and when we stop being
useful to them, they will turn against us."

With the recent violence in Kosovo, NATO and UNMIK officials seem to be
catching on, noting in a recent joint statement, "What is clear . . . is that
two young French soldiers, who came here as peacekeepers, are lying in hospital
beds suffering from gunshot wounds inflicted on them by the very people that
they came here to protect." And Gen. Pierre de Saqui de Sannes, a French
commander in Kosovska Mitrovica, has acknowledged: "I will have great
difficulty in preventing someone from throwing a grenade or firing a rocket. If
this strategy continues I confess I'm not very optimistic."

State Department spokesman James Rubin, however, doesn't seem to get it. He
blames Yugoslav president Slobodan Milosevic for ethnic Albanians' shooting at
NATO peacekeepers. "When things go bad," explains Rubin, Milosevic "feels like
he had a good day."

Meanwhile, a NATO official in Belgium has admitted that "the KLA is certainly
trying to precipitate events politically and get rid of some people, both Serbs
and moderate ethnic Albanians." Even more worrisome, independent newspapers in
Macedonia are reporting the existence of KLA-like formations in Macedonia. The
papers say the units are waiting for an opportune time to link up with units
from Kosovo and Albania following violence planned for the coming spring. There
are also reports now coming from Western and independent media inside
Yugoslavia telling of KLA infiltration into Serbia proper, specifically into
the municipalities of Kursumlija and Leskovac along the border with Kosovo. So
far, two policemen have reportedly been killed and six people wounded, and
there is fear that the number of incidents will increase at winter's end.

Nevertheless, in a move that suggests that Kosovo is becoming the Belfast of
the Balkans, French troops stationed in Kosovska Mitrovica have been replaced
by about 150 soldiers from the British Royal Green Jackets. According to the
New York Times, "The Green Jackets . . . have extensive experience in urban
patrolling and civil unrest from serving in Northern Ireland," and,
accordingly, have achieved some of the "best results" of all the peacekeepers
in Kosovo. "I think it is widely understood that the British have experience of
patrolling urban areas and in dealing with civil unrest," explains a British
spokesman, and "when it comes to infantry units, most of our men have been in
Northern Ireland in the not too distant past."

The analogy of Northern Ireland and Kosovo is fitting. The British army went to
Northern Ireland to keep the warring sides apart and prevent another bloodbath.
But instead of ending the violence, both sides continued for decades to launch
sporadic attacks on one another as well as on the peacekeepers who were
ostensibly there to help.

What then can we expect in Kosovo? Perhaps much the same. American hopes for
peace in Northern Ireland, for instance, were recently set back by the Irish
Republican Army's refusal to disarm. In Kosovo, similarly, NATO leaders who
touted promises by the KLA to disarm must now explain why peacekeepers are

Vol. 6, No. 1271 - The American Reporter - February 21, 2000

ARTICLE ON McCAIN IS 'SLEAZE,' SAFIRE CHARGES
by James De Pietro
American Reporter Correspondent
Washington, D.C.
WASHINGTON -- Early this week, every member of Congress and 130 members of
the media received free copies of World magazine, a product of God's World
Publications and its corporate parent, a South Carolina college that forbids
interracial dating and is closely associated with Texas Gov. George W. Bush.

On the cover was an unflattering photo of U.S. Sen. John McCain and a
headline that called the McCain movement, "A campaign platform that should
give Republicans pause." Thursday, the New York Times' Pulitzer Prize-winning
journalist and former Republican speechwriter William Safire called the
article inside "religio-political sleaze in action."

Safire, a spokesman for conservatives throughout the world and a former
speechwriter for President Richard Nixon, charged Thursday that the article
unfairly assaults McCain on issues ranging from his tax policy to his
marriage and traces its origins to the relationship between the magazine's
editor, longtime Bush strategist Marvin Olansky, and Bob Jones, the president
of the South Carolina college that owns and publishes God's World
Publications. The article was written by Bob Jones IV, the son of the
president of Bob Jones University.

What troubled Safire was that both the university and the magazine enjoy
tax-exempt status, as religious organizations. Under U.S. tax laws, such
organizations are not allowed to engage in partisan political activity or to
actively support any political candidate.

At 3 a.m in the morning on Feb. 2, just a few hours after Gov. Bush was
unexpectedly battered by Sen. McCain in the New Hampshire primary, the
college's campus was the site of a huge Bush rally by 1,800 students. And
Thursday, Safire's Op-Ed page column called the article a "repugnant
anti-McCain campaign document."

Referring to McCain's tax policy, Safire notes that Jones wrote, "He makes
his case with liberal, even Marxist, terminology." On McCain's crusade for
campaign finance reform, Jones wrote, "McCain would essentially suspend the
First Amendment for 60 days prior to any federal election."

Then Jones gets personal.

"Yet for all his dependence on his wife's money, Mr. McCain doesn't appear to
be a particularly attentive husband," says Jones, referring to McCain not
knowing of his wife Cindy's dependence on pain relievers after an illness.

Safire says the article is a product of "backdoor backing of Bush."

The editor of World magazine is Marvin Olasky, an advisor to Bush and also an
author of Bush's "compassionate conservatism" campaign strategy. Ironically,
one of 12 books Olasky has authored is "Telling the Truth: How to revitalize
Christian Journalism." Olasky also teaches an undergraduate class entitled
"Media Law and Ethics" at the University of Texas at Austin, among others.

"William Safire messed up," Olasky said when contacted by the American
Reporter about the Safire article.

"Journalists should be the eyes and ears of voters," he continued. "If they
fall in love with a candidate and adopt a policy of see, hear, and speak no
evil, we will recognize tell-tale scratching only when it is too late."

Bob Jones IV has no formal connection to the Bush campaign. However, his
father's university offered its facilities to Bush to launch his campaign in
South Carolina, a gesture not extended to McCain.

Yet, says the publisher of World, Joel Belz, "We cannot endorse candidates or
legislation. In 58 years, we have never backed any candidate."

Neither the Bush nor the McCain camp returned several phone calls requesting
comment. But after former GOP hopeful Gary Bauer endorsed McCain in South
Carolina, both candidates can probably find a use for the World's coverage --
Bush to make inroads with South Carolina's religious conservatives, and
McCain to prove his charges about the Bush campaign's negative approach to
the voters.

Safire's message appears to be that using partisan journalism to trash the
policy and character of McCain under the pretext of being neutral, and
distributing the article to Congress and the media while maintaining a
tax-exempt status, calls into question the credibility of journalists, the
secualr nature of the political process, and the independence of religious
institutions.

Jones' article in the current edition of World is dated today, Feb. 19, when
South Carolina voters can cast their votes for one of the three remaining GOP
candidates to select delegates for the Republican convention. The race is
said to be a dead heat.

AUTHOR: Submitted to the Illinois House of Representatives
DATE: Monday, 21 February 2000, at 3:26 p.m.

6) Request a permit from the DEA for Illinois to pursue research on
industrial hemp on test plots at universities in Illinois. University
research on industrial hemp should be undertaken quickly so that Illinois
is in the position to capitalize on the market for hemp.

Pubdate: January 26, 2000 Recommendations

Based upon the review of literature and testimony presented before
the Illinois State Task Force, the members find that industrial hemp
is a versatile crop. There is potential for industrial hemp to be
an important alternative crop in Illinois. Underlying any recommendations
to investigate, permit or promote the production of industrial hemp.
So that Illinois does not lose an opportunity to enhance its agricultural
leadership in the United States, the Task Force believes the General
Assembly should act upon the following recommendations:

1) Redefine Cannabis Sativa L. 740 ILCS 20/, the Cannabis and Controlled
Substances Tort Claim Act, to differentiate between industrial hemp
and marijuana. Industrial hemp should be distinguished as having a
level of 0.3 percent or less tetrahydrocannabinol (THC).

2) Redefine Cannabis sativa L. in 720 ILCS 550, the Cannabis Control
Act, as above.

3) Distinguish between marijuana and industrial hemp and remove industrial
hemp as a noxious weed in 505 ILCS/100, the Illinois Noxious Weed
Law.

4) Encourage Congress to make the necessary changes in the United
States Codes: 21 U.S.C.812 (10), 21 U.S.C.841 to distinguish between
marijuana and industrial hemp as they relate to production, possession
and delivery.

5) Recommend the Drug Enforcement Agency (DEA) and the National Office
of Drug Control Policy adopt a new definition of industrial hemp and
recognize a 0.3 percent THC level as the standard for industrial hemp.
Recommend DEA issue permits and make it legal to produce, possess,
and deliver industrial hemp in the United States and internationally.

6) Request a permit from the DEA for Illinois to pursue research on
industrial hemp on test plots at universities in Illinois. University
research on industrial hemp should be undertaken quickly so that Illinois
is in the position to capitalize on the market for hemp.

7) Utilizing the research capabilities at Illinois universities and
the National Research Lab in Peoria, Illinois, allocate funding to:
conduct market analyses; perform agronomic research that identifies
the best growing conditions of hemp; study methods of adapting of
machinery needed for harvesting hemp; establish viable seed stocks
and germ plasm collections; evaluate the incorporation of hemp in
conjunction or rotation with current crops; develop economic modeling

UFO over Mexico City

From: Newspaper 'El Universal', 2-15-2000

For one hour, 16 police officers could not believe what they
where seeing. In front of them at only three meters from the
ground a UFO, 10 meter in diameter with two strong lights of
different colors; red, green and blue, hovered for 30
seconds.

The first sighting started at 2:13 (08.20 GMT) the morning of
Valentine's Day. Officers Juan Carlos Duenas and Israel
Gutierrez, Police Unit 16147, spotted the UFO next to the
Vocational 8 Building. "Our watches stop at exactly 2:20 AM,
when the UFO disappeared in the night" said.

Twenty-five minutes later, at 2:38 AM, Police Unit 01127,
reported, by radio, seeing the UFO flying over Colonia
Palmititla, next to the Chiquihuite Hill.

Police Units 16079 and 1616 reported seeing the UFO in
Azcapotzalco and the Units: 01899, 01875, 13843 reported seeing
it in Gustavo A. Madero. The last report was received at 3:13 AM
(09.13 GMT).

"El Universal" photographer, Saul Navarro, took two pictures of
the UFO and his report coincides those of the police. "I watched
the UFO hover, close to the ground. It could not have been an
airplane. Suddenly, it started moving and stopped over a house.
It stayed there for 10 or 15 seconds, and then disappeared behind
some trees" said. Mr. Navarro agrees with the police on the
colors of the lights.

By PHILIP BRASHER

WASHINGTON (February 21, 2000 6:39 p.m. EST
http://www.nandotimes.com) - Ground beef that's been irradiated to kill
deadly bacteria could start showing up in supermarkets next month. New
rules that allow the irradiation of raw beef, pork and lamb take effect
Tuesday.

To its advocates, irradiation could be one of the biggest advancements in
food safety since the pasteurization of milk.

"Most people are ready," said Christine Bruhn, director of the Center for
Consumer Research at the University of California-Davis. "They are sick
and tired of hearing of cases of food-borne outbreaks."

Most meatpackers intend to start small, testing irradiated ground beef in
select markets to see how it sells. Colorado Boxed Beef Co., a Florida
processer, is expected to be the first to test the market by distributing
through grocery chains in the Southeast.

The company had to recall 359,000 pounds beef products in November
1998 because of possible contamination with the deadly E. coli bacteria,
and Florida officials have been promoting irradiation heavily.

Initially, irradiated meat is likely to be most popular with hospitals and
nursing homes because of the danger E. coli poses to patients with
weakened immune systems. But its use there could generate interest from
consumers, said Tim Willard, a spokesman for the National Food
Processors Association.

The meat is expected to cost an extra three to five cents per pound but the
price is likely to drop as it becomes more widely available.

"We view this as a consumer choice issue. The consumer will ultimately
determine the success," said Gary Mickelson, a spokesman for the
nation's biggest beef processor, IBP Inc. He said the company has not yet
set a startup date for test maketing the irradiated patties but expects to
start sometime this year.

Excel Corp., the industry's No. 2 firm, plans to start shipping treated beef to
its food service customers the first week of March.

Irradiation has long been allowed for poultry, as well as fruits, vegetables
and spices. But it is seldom used on poultry, partly because the primary
poultry pathogens aren't as dangerous as E. coli and chicken processors
haven't thought it was worth the expense, say industry experts.

One big recall for E. coli, by contrast, can devastate a meatpacker
financially.

The irradiation is done by three methods - gamma rays, X-rays, or electron
beams. In addition to eliminating E. coli, the treatment can significantly
reduce levels of other pathogens, including listeria, salmonella and
campylobacter. The food isn't radioactive, and while there is a slight loss of
nutrients, the food is largely unchanged, according to the Food and Drug
Administration.

FDA also is considering allowing irradiation for hot dogs, luncheon meats
and other ready-to-eat products.

Special labels are required, carrying the international symbol of irradiation,
known as a "radura," and a statement that they were treated. The symbol,
colored green on a white background, depicts two leaves resting in a
semicircle, with a green dot above it beneath a broken-lined semicircle.

E. coli can cause serious illness and sometimes death, especially in
children and the elderly. An estimated 73,480 people are infected every
year, and about 600 cases are fatal, according to the federal Centers for
Disease Control and Prevention.

"This is an extra layer of food safety," said Mark Klein, a spokesman for
Excel, which blasts beef carcasses with steam to kill E. coli. "We definitely
view it as an additional tool and not a replacement for other technologies or
food safety programs."

Irradiation had to be approved by both USDA, which is responsible for
ensuring the safety of meat, and the Food and Drug Administration, which
has authority over food additives. The FDA approved irradiation for red
meat in 1997, and the USDA followed last
December.

 Although Medical Privacy Regulations an
Important First Step, ACLU Also Criticizes Loopholes

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Thursday, February 17, 2000

Contact: DC Media Relations Office
 [EMAIL PROTECTED]

WASHINGTON -- The Clinton Administration's proposed medical privacy
regulations include several loopholes that threaten the Administration's
laudable premise that medical information is private and may not be
disclosed to third parties without prior consent, the American Civil
Liberties Union said today.

"The Administration's proposed regulations are an important first step
toward comprehensive federal privacy protections," said Ronald Weich, an
ACLU Legislative Consultant. "But there are so many loopholes to the
Administration's overall rule that medical records are private that the
exceptions threaten to become the rule."

While the proposed regulations do a good job of shielding medical
information from disclosure for commercial reasons, the ACLU said that they
provide a series of exceptions for government access to data, including for
law enforcement agencies and public health agencies.

"For many patients," the ACLU said, "the fear of government access to
private medical information is as chilling as the fear of commercial
access. In fact, many Americans regard the government as more of a threat
to liberty than the private sector."

The ACLU took particularly harsh aim at the Administration's plans to allow
law enforcement agencies virtually unlimited access to medical records.
This loophole is so large, the ACLU said, that it "permits computerized
medical records to become a vast centralized police database."

"Medical records of ordinary law-abiding Americans must not be treated like
mug shots, fingerprints or other current databases compiled from convicted
criminals," the ACLU said.

The ACLU's other primary concerns with the regulations include the broad
privacy exceptions for medical information collected by the government
itself and what the ACLU called a significant omission to the
Administration's proposal: there is no requirement that a doctor obtain a
patient's authorization before using the patient's medical records for
treatment, payment or health care operations.

"The ACLU believes that patients own their medical records," the ACLU said.
"It follows that those records cannot be used for any purpose without the
patient's consent."

The ACLU's formal comments came on the last day of the comments period. In
addition to filing its own suggested changes, the ACLU said that more than
11,000 people had visited its special medical records web site, filing
approximately 10,000 comments with the Administration.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

CHICAGO -- Seeking to assure that all persons in Illinois have access to
the public documents and records to which they are entitled, the American
Civil Liberties Union of Illinois today announced its full support for
House Bill 4341.

The measure, sponsored by House Majority Leader Barbara Flynn Currie (D -

to enforce requirements of Illinois' Freedom of Information Act and levies
a penalty on those governmental agencies and individuals that purposefully
violate the law.

"This is an important step toward strengthening accountability from
governmental agencies at all levels and in all communities," said Edwin C.

to fight for their rights, to seek redress in courts and to hold government
officials responsible for their actions."

A 1999 study directed by the Associated Press and fourteen Illinois daily
newspapers revealed a poor record of compliance with requirements of the
existing FOIA statute. Across the state, less than one-third of the "tests"

FINDERS AND THE CIA CONNECTION? ARE THE CIA INVOLVED IN CHILD ABDUCTION?

--

*The Washington Post*
Saturday February 7, 1987
*Officials Describe 'Cult Rituals' in Child Abuse Case Photos of Youngsters
Seized At D.C. Warehouse, Probers Say

Authorities investigating the alleged abuse of six children found with two
men in a Tallahassee, Fla., park discovered material yesterday in the
Washington area that they say points to a 1960's style commune called the
Finders, described in a court document as a "cult" that allegedly conducted
"brainwashing" and used children "in rituals."

D. C. police, who searched a Northeast Washington warehouse linked to the
group removed large plastic bags filled with color slides, photographs and
photographic contact sheets. Some photos visible through a bag carried from
the warehouse at 1307 Fourth St. NE were wallet-sized pictures of children,
similar to school photos, and some were of naked children.

D.C. police sources said some of the items seized yesterday showed pictures
of children engaged in what appeared to be "cult rituals." Officials of the
U.S. Customs Service, called in to aid in the investigation, said that the
material seized yesterday includes photos showing children involved in
bloodletting ceremonies of animals and one photograph of a child in chains.

Customs officials said they were looking into whether a child pornography
operation was being conducted.

According to court documents, computers and software were seized from the
warehouse, from a Glover Park apartment building and from a van that was
recovered in Tallahassee along with the children.

Yesterday's disclosures about the mysterious group grew out of an
investigation that was set in motion Wednesday by an anonymous call to
Tallahassee police about two "well-dressed men" who were "supervising" six
dishevelled children in a neighborhood park. The men were arrested and
charged with child abuse, according to Tallahassee police.

Their links to the D.C. area have led authorities into a far-reaching
investigation that includes the Finders - a group of about 40 people that
court documents allege is led by a man named Marion Pettie - and their
various homes, including the duplex apartment building in Glover Park, the
Northeast Washington warehouse and a 90 acre farm in rural Madison County,
Va.

Tallahassee police, who arrested and charged men identified as Douglas E.
Ammerman and Michael Houlihan with child abuse, contacted D.C. police
Thursday in an attempt to establish the identities of the children. They
learned that D.C. police had heard of the Finders group, according to
Tallahassee police spokesman Scott Hunt. No other member of the group had
been located last night, police sources said.

According to U.S. District Court records in Washington, a confidential police
source had previously told authorities that the Finders were "a cult" that
conducted "brainwashing" techniques at the warehouse and the Glover Park
duplex at 3918 20W. St. NW. This source told of being recruited by the
Finders with promises of "financial reward and sexual gratification" and of
being invited by one member to "explore" satanism with them, according to the
documents.

According to the affidavit the source told authorities that children were
used in "rituals" by the members, and though the source had never witnessed
abuse of the children, the source said the children's grandparents feared for
their safety.

On Dec. 15, a D.C. police detective observed a clearing in the area of the
3900 block W. St. NW where "several round stones had been gathered" near a
circle, as well as evidence that people had gathered there, according to the
document, which stated that "this practice is sometimes used in satanic
rituals."

Armed with that information and the report from Talahassee police of the
allegedly abused children, D.C. police sought search warrants for the Glover
Park residence and the warehouse.

Meanwhile, authorities in Florida attempted to learn more about the six small
children, described by a police spokesman as "hungry and..pretty pathetic"
who had set the investigation in motion.

The children, identified in a court document only by the first names of
Honeybee, John Franklin, Bee Bee, Max and Mary, were described as "dirty
unkept, hungry, disturbed and agitated". They had been living in the rear of
the van for some time, the document said. Yesterday, police spokesman Hunt
said one of the children, a 6 yr. old girl "showed signs of sexual abuse" but
that an examination by a local doctor showed none of the children as being
ill.

Five of the children were uncommunicative, according to police, and none
seemed to recognize objects such as typewriters and staplers. However, the
oldest was able to give investigators some information. She said that the two
men "were their teachers,"

TONY'S CRONIES LIE
AND LIE AGAIN
TO ADVANCE NEW WORLD ORDER

ILLUMINATI PUPPET BLAIR HEADS
THE MOST CORRUPT UK
GOVERNMENT OF ALL TIME

by David Icke
The Tony Blair political mafia have been exposed again for blatant lies and
misrepresentation in their efforts to ensnare the UK even further into the
European fascist state.

The expansion of the European Union is one of the major planks of the New
World Order and the centralisation of global power - and so is the constant
erosion of national decision-making in favour of pan-European political,
financial and military institutions.

Again and again the populations of Europe have been frightened and
manipulated into supporting their country's membership of the European
Union.. They are told there will be economic disaster, mass unemployment, and
the nation will be open season for the financial predators like the currency
assassin, George Soros (Bilderberg Group, Rothschild yes-man).

They do not mention Norway where the population resisted this pressure and
have boomed and prospered outside the European Union. And where is their
biggest export market? Yes, the European Union!!

Tony Blair came to power on May Ist 1997 as a major front man for the
Illuminati. One of his jobs is to abolish the pound sterling and replace it
with the European currency, the Euro. During his election campaign he could
not admit this because it would not have been good for votes. Instead he
promised a "referendum".

What this means is that the "pro" side attracts the major political names and
all the publicity while the "no" campaign is left to get by on a fraction of
the funds and exposure. As a result, the "yes" case wins and Blair can claim
that "the people have spoken". It is an old, old, Illuminati scam.

Blair, his Chancellor of the Exchequer, Gordon Brown, and Northern Ireland
Secretary, the so called "Prince of Darkness", Peter Mandelson (all
Bilderberg Group) have joined forces with their Conservative "opposition"
members like Kenneth Clarke and Ted Heath (both Bilderberg Group) to press
for the UK to join the European single currency. This is the one -party state
in action. Heath, a Satanist and child sexual abuser, torturer, and murderer,
was the UK Prime Minister who signed the country into the European Community,
now Union.

Tony Blair is a deeply, deeply, untrustworthy piece of the work and he has
surrounded himself with similar people.

This cynical, manipulating clique has been exposed for misrepresenting
figures this week so blatantly that Martin Weale, the director of the
National Institute for Economic and Social Research, (NIESR) said was worthy
of Hitler's propaganda chief, Dr. Goebbels.

They claimed that EIGHT MILLION jobs would be lost in the UK if Britain left
the European Union. They leaked extracts of an independent study by NIESR,
but they did it so selectively to frighten the public that they totally
misrepresented the reports actual findings.

In fact, the report makes it clear that only 175,000 jobs would be lost
"TEMPORARILY" over three years, if membership of the EU was ended, and that
was only if the government took none of the obvious measures to ease these
effects.

Even then, the 175,000 jobs would be restored within a few years. As Norway
has shown, your economy can do better outside the EU than inside.

The report, which the Blair camp has used to create the fear of mass
unemployment should Britain leave the European Union, actually says:

"As the experience of the 1960s indicates, there is no reason why being
outside the EU should necessarily involve mass unemployment."

Martin Weale said that the way the Blair camp had presented the findings of
the report was "absurd" and had taken one part "out of context."

This comes after the embarrassment the Blair and pro-Europe group experienced
last November when they claimed, quite wrongly, that the car firms, Rover,
Ford, and Fiat, had threatened to leave Britain if the country did not join
the new European currency.

This is the gutter level at which Illuminati yes men seek to frighten the
British people into doing what they want.

Sleaze
British Prime minister, Tony Blair,
lies about his 1993 Bilderberg
attendance at question time

Bilderberg Conferences
Secret lobbying by western Power Elite

--
--

If Bilderberg is just a 'talking shop', and if you are a Christian, then why
lie to the House of Commons Mr Blair?
Blair asked about Bilderberg trips at question time 16Mar98 - replies: "none"
Was Blair at the 1993 Bilderberg Conference in Athens? Evidence clearly Yes.

Chronology of Blair's rise to power following Bilderberg attendance

Further parliamentary Bilderberg questions

Letter from a worried MP, Christopher Gill
Blair replies to parliamentary question on Bilderberg participation - From
Commons written answers March 1998:
"Mr. Christopher Gill MP: To ask the Prime Minister which members of his
Government have attended meetings of the Bilderberg Group. [34298]

The Prime Minister [holding answer 16 March 1998]: None. "

Might the PM have forgotten the trip? This reply is a lie. Blair attended the
1993 Bilderberg Conference. He even belatedly declared it in the register of
members' interests. His presence was reported in, to take just one source,
The London Times, 4th march 1996, page 16 in an article entitled Wall Street,
treason and Pat Buchanan by William Rees-Mogg, who attended Bilderberg too.
Five proofs that Tony Blair was at the 1993 Conference in Athens...
Firstly, confirmation from eyewitness and London Times columnist, William
Rees-Mogg on 4th March 1996
..."Last time I went to a Bilderberg conference, it was held in Athens, about
three years ago. Tony Blair was there, not yet leader of the Labour Party,
Conrad Black and Barbara Amiel were there, the Queen of The Netherlands was
there. It was all pleasantly grand. . The Queen of The Netherlands is as
Euro-fanatic as Ted Heath, Tony Blair is a modest good European, I have been
an anti-Maastricht campaigner and Mr Black is a Canadian neo-realist who owns
500 newspapers."

04Mar96 - London Times article: "WALL STREET, TREASON AND PAT BUCHANAN."

Secondly, confirmation from a Memorandum submitted by the Parliamentary
Commissioner for Standards:
"Complaint against Mr Kenneth Clarke 1. Mrs Lynn Riley, of Chepstow,
Monmouthshire, wrote on 28 February 1997 to a Member of the House, alleging
that Mr Kenneth Clarke MP had failed to register `the free trip and
accommodation he received from the Bilderberg Group ... unlike Tony Blair who
attended the same meeting'. She enclosed a letter from Mr Clarke dated 6
September 1995 in which he states that `my recollection is that I paid for my
flight but that I was accommodated while I was there'. The Member passed the
correspondence on to me….

5. Mr Clarke subsequently explained that he and Mr Blair considered that they
were attending the conference as representatives of the Government and the
Opposition respectively, and stated that `I was quite confident that I was at
the time meeting the rules applying to Ministers, and it did not occur to me
that the new rules concerning registration could apply to this visit'. "

Thirdly confirmation in the London Times Diary
The London Times: diary, 24 May 1995, p16:
"With concern about sleaze in mind, Tony Blair has belatedly listed in the
updated Register of Members' Interests (published tomorrow) a visit he made
in 1993 to the Bilderberg Conference in Athens as Shadow Home Secretary. His
companion, Kenneth Clarke, suffers no such qualms, he hasn't registered the
trip."

Fourthly confirmation in The Guardian, 29May97, in article headed "GALLOWAY
CLEARED IN SAUDI CASE."
By DAVID HENCKE WESTMINSTER CORRESPONDENT.

"Committee backs Downey report on MP's role in deportation case
"The former chancellor Kenneth Clarke was also cleared of any major
breach of Commons rules after allegations about his attendance at a
conference in Greece with Tony Blair. The committee agreed in a report
published with Sir Gordon that any breach of the rules on registration was
"relatively minor". Mr Clarke allegedly failed to register a free trip and
accommodation at the Bilderberg Conference on European and world affairs in
April 1993 when he was home secretary. Mr Clarke paid his own air fare, but
his accommodation was provided by the hosts.

GUARDIAN 29/07/97 P6

Fifthly, confirmation from The Social Crediter, Official Journal of the
Social Credit Secretariat
by Alan Armstrong, with Alistair McConnachie at Turnberry.
"Tony Blair attended the meeting on 23-25 April 1993 at Vouliagmeni in Greece
when he was Shadow Home Secretary. "

Chronology of Blair's rise to power
1993 - April 22nd-25th - Athens, Blair interviewed at Bilderberg
1994 - July 21st - Blair becomes party leader by block votes
1997 - May 2nd - Blair becomes Prime Minister

Market Commentary

The Credit Bubble Bulletin by Doug Noland
   February 18, 2000

 ...

It was another perilous week for the credit market. In fact, we see
the unfolding crisis as having taken a decided "turn for the worst"
this week, as our conviction now grows that the mighty credit bubble
is in its most serious jeopardy since the failure of Long Term Capital
Management. Remember, during the late summer and early fall in 1998,
spreads widened sharply, with, for example, the 10-year dollar swap
spread widening from about 70 basis points to 95. This week, the
10-year dollar swap, apparently having developed into a key market
benchmark, widened 9 basis points to 100. This spread was 70 on
January 26th, before the commencement of the current explosive move.

It appears that the mortgage security marketplace is a key source of
current systemic stress. The spread between generic Fannie Mae
mortgage-backed securities and 10-year Treasury notes widened 11 basis
points to 161, this after trading at 124 on January 26th. Heightened
pressure is also apparent in the important market for GSE Agency
securities, as spreads widened about 8 basis points this week. These
spreads have widened almost 30 basis points during the past three
weeks, a very painful move for those that had borrowed to speculate in
Agency securities. Elsewhere, speculators that had bet on a steeper
yield curve have been severely bloodied. Today, the spread between
5-year T-notes and 30-year T-bonds widened 9 basis points to a
negative 53, this after trading at a positive 12 in mid-January. An
even greater trading debacle, however, has developed for those
speculators financing or hedging mortgages with the government long
bond. This spread widened 11 more basis points this week to 194.
This spread has widened 34 basis points so far this month and almost
60 basis points since mid-January.

The harsh reality remains that our highly leveraged financial system
functions poorly with any widening of spreads. As was the case
during the LTCM fiasco, any sudden widening abruptly leads to illiquid
markets as the leveraged players are forced to dump securities and
frenetically move to hedge risk. If this hedging involves derivative,
as appears increasingly the case, the writers of these products then
sell securities as they dynamically hedge their exposure. We have, of
course, stated before our view that the US financial sector has
developed (or - regressed) into one massive interest rate arbitrate,
with hundreds of billions of dollars of leveraged trades and trillions
of interest rate derivatives. Over the years, interest rate
speculation has grown to become endemic to our financial system.
Included in the long list of speculators are the banks, the
government-sponsored enterprises, a proliferation of non-bank lenders
including mortgage brokers and aggressive credit card providers, Wall
Street brokerage firms, mutual funds, hedge funds and others through
the derivatives markets. In fact, maybe it is because this has been
going on for so long that it is difficult for most to accept that
borrowing in the money markets, either directly or indirectly, to
finance a balance sheet or portfolio of mortgages and other higher
yielding securities is a risky proposition.

We have believed for some time that crisis would be the unavoidable
consequence of truly unprecedented credit market leverage and
speculation. Eventually, markets always punish egregious excess -
always. Actually, this unhealthy bubble was in the process of being
pierced back in the autumn of 1998. It should be recognized today
that it would have been much better for the system to have taken the
medicine back then. Instead, the Federal Reserve cuts rates sharply,
while Fannie Mae, Freddie Mac and the Federal Home Loan Bank System
moved aggressively as buyers of last resort for the leveraged
speculators. In the process, hundreds of billions of new credit was
created by the GSEs that gave a dangerously maladjusted credit system
another lease on life - and what a life it became. For sure, this
bailout created huge moral hazard for the credit and stock markets.
It incited truly unprecedented credit and speculative excess.

It is also our view that historians will look back on the fall of
1998 and see it as the critical point where the Federal Reserve truly
lost control of the financial system. Since the bailout, the
corporate sector has likely added over $700 billion in debt, while
mortgage debt

PRISON REFORM:
A MOMENT TO SEIZE?
By Neal R. Peirce

WASHINGTON-If ever there were a golden moment to reform America's prison
policy -- 2 million people incarcerated-that time should be now.
The economy's booming, creating strong demand for workers, rehabilitated
convicts included. Crime rates are dropping rapidly. We're feeling a touch
of shame about leading the civilized world in prisoners.
It's true, our prisons still hold hundreds of thousands of dangerous
individuals, people convicted of quite heinous violent crimes. Even if a
handful were wrongly convicted-note the recent concerns about some innocents
held on death rows-we're justifiably nervous about premature releases.
But behind bars, too, are lots of men (and increasingly women) who were
caught possessing or handling small amounts of drugs. Many now face years,
often decades, of incarceration for those infractions.
In federal prisons, the average drug offender spends more time imprisoned
(82.2 months) than rapists (73.3 months).
In California, more inmates are doing life-their natural life-for marijuana
possession than for murder, rape and robbery combined.
Here's a possible reform agenda:
* Overhaul sentencing to decide who we're afraid of, and who we're just mad
at. Imprison the proven criminals we have reason to fear. Find alternative
ways-from halfway houses to community service to drug treatment-to chastise
and then treat the rest.

Sentencing reform means doing away with the mandatory sentencing, the "three
strikes and you're out" laws of the 80s and 90s. Legislatures should write
sentencing guidelines focused less on punishment, more on averting future
violent crime. Example: letting judges use statistical data that show which
types of prisoners respond best to which sentences or treatments.
* Reinvent and reinvest in probation and parole. This idea's championed by
criminologist John DiIulio, who supported much of the 90s prison build-up.
Probation and parole fail, he notes, because officers have unrealistic
caseloads and are paid poorly. Recidivism could likely be cut way back by
investing adequate funds, cutting caseloads, and then judging various
probation and parole practices by their actual effectiveness in stopping
repeat crime.
* Stop chasing drug addicts. America's massive "war on drugs" is an abysmal
failure. Even with multi-billion dollar budgets and military power, it
can't interdict more than 1 percent or so of the illegal drugs flowing into
the U.S. It can't stop the flow to the streets, where drugs are cheaper
than ever. It rarely catches the big dealers; usually it snares small-time
operators, very poor people often addicted and personally maladjusted. Then
it throws them in the slammer for obscenely long periods of years.

Which drugs are truly dangerous, to users and society? Tobacco takes a
yearly death toll of 390,000 Americans, alcohol 80,000, cocaine 2,200,
heroin 2,000, aspirin 2,000 and marijuana zero (no proven deaths, at least
on its own). Combine all illegal drugs and the direct death toll is under
5,000 Americans a year, according to National Institute of Drug Abuse
reports.
The danger to society isn't the illegal drugs; it's chasing down their
users, criminalizing addiction. The last time we had prohibition-against
alcohol early in the 20th century-attendant violence, including murders,
also hit record highs.
* Treat drug addicts-don't make them wait months, years for care as we do
now. Studies show people who get treatment are four times less likely to
commit another drug crime. Rand Corp. research calculated that spending on
treatment reduces serious crime 15 times more than expanding mandatory
prison terms.

While we've poured billions into new prisons, most drug treatment programs,
whether in communities or behind bars, remain woefully underfunded. For the
$450,000 it typically costs to arrest, convict and imprison a drug dealer
for five years, drug treatment or education can be provided for about 200
people, according to the Drug Reform Coordination Network. We should switch
out dollars, to where real results await.
* Go after root causes. Why do we have serious crime, drug affliction?
Some degree of bestial behavior is a constant among humans. But it's also
true, as prison hard-liner DiIulio has noted, that America records 1 million
substantiated case of child abuse yearly. Sixteen percent of our children
are impoverished, 40 percent are without a father in the home.

Neighborhood-, church, school-based programs can help some of these young
people, and need much more serious

[CTRL] A Few Thoughts DOJ, Money Laundering, HUD Federal Credit Programs

I am many years out of the specifics of securities transactions, and my
knowledge of the mechanics of money laundering in the mortgage markets
almost non-existent, so what I am going to say is more conceptual than I
would like. I finally realized the essence of why the politics at HUD played
out the way they did during the Clinton administration.

Traditionally, the multifamily mortgage insurance and Section 8 subsidy
constituency had relatively little power in the scheme of things. Their real
power, if they had any, came from who was in their tax shelter LP group that
could get scared (the partners at various New York law firms, investment
banking firms, accounting firms and on up through to the Queen perhaps if
rumors are true) or their ability to serve as or be a DOJ proprietary that
could exploit gentrification and de-regulation in more creative ways than
some of the traditional Section 8 folks.

The relationship of DOJ covert operations and HUD is one I keep musing
about. DOJ was in charge of doing all litigation and legal matters for HUD,
as they are for most or all of the federal agencies. If DOJ covert ops are
as profitable in money laundering as some have alleged, the next question is
what is their competitive edge vs. some of the other groups. One of them may
be that they do the litigation and legal enforcement for all the federal
credit programs, of which HUD with FHA, has about 33% of the total amount
outstanding (about $1.2 trillion in the early '90's) and the Clinton
Administration has ballooned it a lot since. That gives them interesting
access to influence the design, allocation and enforcement/litigation
related to the annual origination of what today would be as much as several
hundred billion a year in federal credit and related securities.

The 800 lb. gorilla at HUD has always been the Federal Housing
Administration (FHA) Mutual Mortgage Insurance Fund (FHA). My guess is that
the Clinton Administration has either bankrupted the fund, or gone a long
way to doing so, but I doubt that will come up until the markets drop in the
next cycle. From 1994-97, I watched policies that at the time made
absolutely no sense. It was explained to me that folks like the Clintons and
Cuomo love providing guarantees to facilitate more and more debt and that
their constituents are often fee driven entities based on debt (banks,
mortgage bankers, etc). The lengths that the liberalization went to made no
sense given that market liquidity argued to shut this stuff down and let the
private sector work(Part of the problem here is that when private markets
operate, the pressure increase to include real estate players based on
performance as opposed to politics). At one point we estimated that the
combined total projects of FHA volume plus what they were mandating that
Fannie and Freddie do meant that some low income neighborhoods would have to
finance and refinance at awesome rates. The joke was "how can everyone
refinance their mortgage twice a year if they are in prison?"

I am sitting here with all my databases in a state of mess under court
control so this is without benefit of numbers. The missing link that would
explain the patterns we experienced from 1989-99, would be a craving for
government guaranteed paper and related securities for purposes of money
laundering and/or quick transfer of laundered funds globally. Intuitively, I
suspect it has something to creating bank and other eligible paper or
securities in volume. When Daiwa Securities got an FHA eagle, I should have
figured on this. Frankly, my mission was to figure out how to finance the
whole deal with equity, so the specifics of how the debt operation on the
titanic was not that interesting.

If the need for government guaranteed paper is the case, it may explain why
some of the complaints on the single family loan sales were so aggressive
and weird (Oscar Wyatt, Chairman of Coastal, demanding that I be fired
because I was a woman), why the thought of merging to place based was so
dangerous on either origination or asset management, why the Wall Street
firms winning placed based bids where they learned how the 203(k) program
worked was such a sore point politically, why Chip Tatum had a mortgage
banking operation under the umbrella of the "Denver Connection" as Webb
calls them, the volume of mortgage financing moving through BONY and a
variety of other phenomenon and behavior among the single family mortgage
bankers and home builders.

It is interesting, I bet decriminalization could tank a lot of Taco Bells,
and
some mortgage bankers and more than few homebuilders. Meantime, if any
body knows of a money laundering expert with deep knowledge of money
laundering in the mortgage markets and homebuilding,

Study offers early look at how Internet is changing daily life

As Internet use grows, Americans report they spend less time with friends and
family, shopping in stores or watching television, and more time working for
their employers at home - without cutting back their hours in the office.
These are the major preliminary results of a new study that is the first
assessment of the social consequences of Internet use based on a large,
representative sample of American households, including both Internet users and
non-users. The study was. conducted by the Stanford Institute for the
Quantitative Study of Society (SIQSS) and released today.

The sample was of 4,113 adults in 2,689 households.
A key finding of the study is that "the more hours people use the Internet, the
less time they spend in contact with real human beings," said Stanford
Professor Norman Nie, Director of SIQSS and principal investigator along with
his co-investigator Professor Lutz Erbring of the Free University of Berlin.
"This is an early trend that, as a society, we really need to monitor
carefully."

While a number of commentators have speculated about how the Internet might
change people's daily lives, and some studies have looked at the use patterns
of non-representative groups of Internet users, only a sample representative of
households nationally allows analysts to make projections about future Internet
usage and its likely consequences, the researchers say. They worked with
InterSurvey of Menlo Park, Calif., to develop a unique Internet-based method
for conducting surveys with a national probability sample of the general
population, including both Internet users and non-users.

Some of the preliminary findings are:
People spend more hours on the Internet the more years they have been using it.
Up to a quarter of the respondents who use the Internet regularly (more than 5
hours a week) feel that it has reduced their time (in person or on the phone)
with friends and family or attending events outside the home.

A quarter of regular Internet users who are employed say the Internet has
increased the time they spend working at home without cutting back at the
office.

Sixty percent of regular Internet users say the Internet has reduced their TV
viewing, and one third say they spend less time reading newspapers.
The least educated and the oldest Americans are least likely to have Internet
access, but when they do use the Internet, their use is similar to others.
About two-thirds of those surveyed who have Internet access said they spend
fewer than five hours a week on the Internet, and most of them did not report
large changes in their day-to-day behavior, the researchers said. But the other
36 percent who use the Internet five or more hours a week do report significant
changes in their lives. The largest changes are reported by those who spend
more than 10 hours a week on the net - individuals who currently account for
only 15 percent of all Internet users but are likely to be a much larger
fraction in the future.

"As of today, heavy Internet users are still a small fraction of the total
population", Nie said, "but that fraction is steadily growing."
"Moreover," Erbring added, "time spent on the net also grows with the number of
years a person has been connected."

Nie and Erbring emphasized that their analysis is preliminary, and SIQSS plans
to conduct follow-up studies on at least an annual basis. (Click on image to

Method used
The research methodology employed for this study producesd a large,
representative sample of all American households, not just current computer and
or Internet users. Nie and Erbring used InterSurvey, a company Nie co-founded,
to conduct the survey on the net (Nie, a political scientist with expertise in
surveys, is co-founder and chairman of the company's board. Stanford is an
investor in the company, and the university's business school has an agreement
to conduct occasional research through InterSurvey.).

InterSurvey is in the process of giving internet devices and connectivity to
several hundred thousand households in exchange for their participation in
surveys and marketing studies of all types.

To date, InterSurvey has built a 35,000-person panel of participants and has
supplied them all with free Web TV. Using this set-top box allows people to
access the internet through their television set, and enables the researchers
to quickly survey those who would not otherwise have internet access. The
company also pays for every participating household to be connected to the
Iinternet.

This is an old story but still very much relevant. It is one of those
tantalizing bits of evidence that shines some light on nefarious goings on in

Finders have a connection to the CIA, and YES, the CIA is involved in child

US secret agents work at Microsoft: French intelligence

Source: AFP | Published: Saturday February 19, 7:44 AM

PARIS, Feb 18 - A French intelligence report today
accused US secret agents of working with computer
giant Microsoft to develop software allowing
Washington to spy on communications around the world.

The report, drawn up by the Strategic Affairs
Delegation (DAS), the intelligence arm of the French
Defence Ministry, was quoted in today's edition of the
news-letter Le Monde du Renseignement (Intelligence
World).

Written by a senior officer at the DAS, the report
claims agents from the National Security Agency (NSA)
helped install secret programmes on Microsoft
software, currently in use in 90 per cent of
computers.

According to the report there was a 'strong suspicion'
of a lack of security fed by insistent rumours about
the existence of spy programs on Microsoft, and by the
presence of NSA personnel in Bill Gates' development
teams.

The NSA protects communications for the US government,
and also intercepts electronic messages for the
Defence Department and other US intelligence agencies,
the newsletter said.

According to the report, 'it would seem that the
creation of Microsoft was largely supported, not least
financially, by the NSA, and that IBM was made to
accept the (Microsoft) MS-DOS operating system by the
same administration.'

The report claimed the Pentagon was Microsoft's
biggest client in the world.

CHICAGO TRIBUNE

To some, aid to Colombia a risky maneuver for
U.S.

--

By Paul de la Garza

SAN VICENTE DEL CAGUAN, Colombia -- It was an extraordinary
gesture
intended to create momentum for peace, but the government
decision to cede
an area the size of Switzerland to Marxist rebels in the
coca-growing
region of southern Colombia seems to have backfired.

Fifteen months later, Colombian officials accuse the rebels of
using the
demilitarized zone to launch attacks against government troops
and to
smuggle cocaine out of the country in exchange for weapons from
Nicaragua
and El Salvador.

As the insurgency and drug trade flourish, U.S. congressional
committees
have begun considering a $1.3 billion emergency aid package the
Clinton
administration is proposing for Colombia, ostensibly to fight the
drug
war. Critics of the effort, called Plan Colombia, believe the
funds will
only entangle the U.S. in the nation's civil war.

The biggest single item in the package is $400 million for
purchasing 30
Blackhawk and 33 Huey helicopters, an RG-8A reconnaissance plane,
night-vision systems for aging planes and air base and radar
enhancements.

Military and paramilitary officials say the helicopters will
enable
Colombian government troops to take the war to the guerrillas. In
the
past, Colombian troops have been easy prey to rebel ambushes
because they
have to cover treacherous terrain on foot.

Since last fall, the military has recorded some successes against
the
Marxist-inspired Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia, known as
the
FARC, by using a fleet of about 20 Blackhawks already in
inventory,
according to retired military officials and analysts.

Once criticized for spreading itself too thin, the military also
reportedly has pulled back troops based in distant and vulnerable
posts.

Rebel leaders say the U.S. aid will lead to further bloodshed as
the
military uses its new equipment against them. They also argue
U.S.
involvement will only complicate the peace process by creating an
environment of mistrust.

In an interview in a hot and dusty camp outside San Vicente del
Caguan on
a recent Sunday afternoon, Comandante Raul Reyes, the
third-ranking leader
of the FARC, urged the U.S. to stay out of Colombia, a nation of
41
million people.

"Plan Colombia is a plan for war financed, again, regrettably, by
the
United States, with the excuse that it is to fight
narcotrafficking," he
said. "It is a way of interfering in the domestic affairs of
Colombia.

"They are preparing for a major role in the war."

In an interview in Mexico City last week, Barry McCaffrey,
director of the
U.S. drug policy office, reiterated the American position that
the United
States is not complicating the peace process.

"The Colombians have to sort this out for themselves," McCaffrey
said,
noting that Plan Colombia includes

"When we sold the Heathen nations rum and opium in rolls,
And the Missionaries went along to save their sinful souls."
The Old Clipper Days
--Julian S. Cutler

William H. Russell (SB co-founder-1833) cousin Samuel Russell formally
established Russell Co. on January 1, 1824 for the purpose of acquiring
opium and smuggling it to China. Russell Co. merged with the number one US
trader, the J. T.H. Perkins "Boston Concern" in 1829. By the mid-1830s the
opium trade had become "the largest commerce of its time in any single
commodity, anywhere in the world." Russell Co. and the Scotch firm
Jardine-Matheson, then the world's largest opium dealer working together were
known as the "Combination." George HW Bush (SB 1948) was born in Milton,
Massachusetts not far from the historic home of Robert Bennett Forbes, a
Russell partner. Many great American, European and Chinese family fortunes
were built on the "China"(opium) trade. Yes, they sold porcelain, tea, silks
and other items at home in the US, but they "needed" the trade in opium for
silver to pay for the desired goods and—opium smuggling returned "handsome"
profits

Opium smuggling didn’t just make money. At times, opium was money. Opium
built empires and had a hand in financing much of the world’s infrastructure.

From Carl A Trocki’s excellent book, Opium, Empire and the Global Economy(1999
):

"The trade in such drugs usually results in some form of monopoly which not
only centralizes the drug traffic, but also restructures much of the
affiliated social and economic terrain in the process. In particular two
major effects are the creation of mass markets and the generation of
enormous, in fact unprecedented, cash flows. The existence of monopoly
results in the concentrated accumulation of vast pools of wealth. The
accumulations of wealth created by a succession of historic drug trades have
been among the primary foundations of global capitalism and the modern
nation-state itself. Indeed, it may be argued that the entire rise of the
west, from 1500 to 1900, depended on a series of drug trades."

". . . the image of the "opium empire," a metaphor first offered by Joseph
Conrad. It takes up the early history of opium and other "traditional drugs"
such as tobacco and sugar and develops the paradigm of commercialized drug
trades and ties that to the growth of European colonialism in the Americas
and Asia . . ."

". . . links between drug trades, European colonial expansion, the creation
of the global capitalist system and the creation of the modern state. Drug
trades destabilized existing societies not merely because they destroyed
individual human beings but also, and perhaps more importantly, because they
have the power to undercut the existing political economy of any state. They
have created new forms of capital; and they have redistributed wealth in
radically new ways."

"Opium thus created a succession of new political and economic orders in Asia
during the past two centuries. These included the state of the East India
Company itself, the new Malay polities of island Southeast Asia, the colonial
states of nineteenth-century Southeast Asia and the warlord regimes of
post-Qing China as well as the Guomindang and communist states that arose out
of that milieu. At the same time, the economies of the entire region were
radically reoriented, or perhaps "re-occidented" would be a more appropriate
word. India's opium production was brought under western control while
China's domestic economy was opened to the west. Southeast Asia was first
opened to western traders and then to western control. With the migration of
Chinese labor, Southeast Asian economies were transformed into
commodity-producing regimes focused on exporting to the industrializing
western Powers. Underlying all of this, opium rearranged the domestic
economies and pushed them down the path of mass consumption, which together
with mass production, typified the "modern" economic order.

It is possible to suggest a hypothesis that mass consumption, as it exists in
modern society, began with drug addiction. And, beyond that, addiction began
with a drug-as-commodity. Something was necessary to prime the pump, as it
were, to initiate the cycles of production, consumption and accumulation that
we identify with capitalism. Opium was the catalyst of the consumer market,
the money economy and even of capitalist production itself in
nineteenth-century Asia.

Opium was the tool of the capitalist classes in transforming the peasantry
and in monetizing their subsistence lifestyles. Opium created pools of
capital and fed the institutions that accumulated it: the banking and
financial systems, the insurance systems and the transportation and
information infrastructures. Those structures and that economy have, in large
part, been inherited by the successor

GOP Primaries Heat Up On Heels Of Bush S.C. Win

WASHINGTON, D.C., Feb. 20 -- By staying on message and focusing on his
record as a "reformer with results," Texas Governor George W. Bush won the
South Carolina GOP primary, effectively restoring his lead as front-runner.

While many in the media warned of the Democrat and Independent influence in
the South Carolina GOP primary vote, and how it may help further boost
Senator John McCain's candidacy, Bush trounced his opponent, 53% to 42%.

Ambassador Alan Keyes, the only other GOP candidate remaining, received 5%.

A breakdown of the South Carolina vote shows that McCain continues in an
uphill battle in winning the GOP vote as his presidential campaign rolls on.
Last night's results reflected that a stunning 3 out of 4 Republicans voted
against McCain.

Earlier today, appearing on NBC's "Meet the Press" with Tim Russert, McCain
rejected the notion of moving to the Reform Party should he continue to lose
against Bush.

As seen in last night's concession speech, the agenda behind the real John
McCain is slowly rearing its ugly head. No more was the supposed upbeat and
positive 'Reaganesque' approach. Instead, as several Sunday morning news
show talking heads pointed out, it was a frustrated, angry and temperamental
McCain who continued to throw out a barrage of accusations at Bush of being
a hypocrite, while predicting his opponent will take the "low road."

"I will not take the low road to the highest office on the land," said
McCain last night, implying that Bush will do so. "A choice between my
optimistic choice for conservatism and the negative message of fear," he
continued, suggesting that Bush's campaign will follow a negative route.

"A choice between a record of reform and an empty slogan of reform. A choice
between experience and pretense," McCain added, further implying that Bush's
"reformer with results" is an empty slogan rather than a reflection of his
record as Texas governor.

Interestingly enough, according to ABC's Dean Reynolds, reporting from the
Bush camp, Texas governor's aides believe that McCain's campaign is in
"meltdown" based on comments made last night in his concession speech.

McCain's web site, http://www.mccain2000.com, which the Senator, along with
many others, hawk as playing a big role in his campaign, does not seem to
include last night's concession speech, instead offering the candidate's
speeches up through only February 9.

Maybe that has something to do with the fact that many observers view
McCain's concession speech as a mistake? On today's ABC's "This Week," Cokie
Roberts and other pundits agreed that not only was the McCain speech a
"mistake," but that his negative advertising comparing Bush to President
Bill Clinton is also a "mistake."

"He's going to spend the next 48 hours explaining that speech," commented
ABC's George Stephanopoulos, referring to McCain.

In contrast to McCain's campaign home page, Bush's site
http://www.georgewbush.com/news/2000/february/pr021900_screm.asp included
the Governor's remarks after the South Carolina win.

Rather than attack McCain, Bush went after the Clinton-Gore administration,
saying that "Clinton Gore have the unfortunate legacy of the highest taxes
in America since World War II. In stark contrast, I know the surplus is not
the government's money, it's the people's money."

According to exit polls conducted for The Associated Press and the
television networks, about 23% of the voters said Bush was the real reformer
in the race. Instead, McCain, who has run as a "reformer" since he began his
presidential bid, was chosen by only 17%.

Apparently McCain's reference to the "Iron Triangle," which he says includes
the special interests, lobbyists and legislators, has not resonated. Polls
show that McCain's continued negative advertising is backfiring rather than
hurting Bush's candidacy. Perhaps this has something to do, in part, to
McCain's role as powerful chairman of the Senate Commerce Committee where he
exclaimed on "Meet the Press" that he's "proud to rule over the special
interests." Yet, according to various news reports, many of McCain's
Washington, D.C. fundraisers are the same lobbyists who have business in
front of his committeesnip

Hey Guys,

Gotta love that Project (are you still putting it out?).

It's Mark checking in from The Great White North (Vancouver).
Here are a couple tidbits that I came across recently for you to ruminate on.
There's a new flick opening soon that sounds like a swipe at the evil

Skulls Movie Information

Joshua Jackson (Dawson's Creek) and Leslie Bibb (Popular) star in Universal
Pictures suspense thriller The Skulls, an Original Film/Newmarket Capital
Group production directed by Rob Cohen (HBOs The Rat Pack), produced by Neal
Moritz (Cruel Intentions) from an original screenplay by John Pogue (U.S. Marshals).
Luke McNamara (Jackson) pays the ultimate sacrifice for fitting in.
Once the over-achieving New Haven townie is able to claw his way into an Ivy
League College, he is invited to join an elitist secret society known as The
Skulls. He jumps at the chance, hoping it will help secure his acceptance into
a prestigious law school. At first seduced by the clubÕs upper-crust
trappings, Luke finds himself ensnared by his own ambition when his journalist
roommate commits suicide amidst cloudy circumstances. Now at the risk of his
own life, he must outwit The Skulls at their own game.
The Skulls opens nationwide on March 31, 2000.

The following comes courtesy of the ISP company Illuminati Online (www.io.com/news):

Tuesday, November 09, 1999 Welcome, Governor Bush
Illuminati Online welcomes a new collocation customer . . .
(http://www.georgewbush.com), the official website for the George W. Bush
campaign. This site is quite an effort; in addition to the features you would
expect from a campaign page, it has a regularly updated list of donors, a
Spanish-language section, and audio clips.
It runs on some of the most beautiful hardware we've ever seen: four Dell
PowerEdge 6300s, collocated at the IO offices. These are lovely systems,
rack-mounted and standing taller than I am (visualize all us hardware geeks
making admiring little noises). Can you say “pages load fast”? The Bush
campaign chose IO because they wanted to stick with an Austin ISP . . . and,
in a city that has several high-quality Internet providers with first-class
connectivity, they picked us because of our reputation for customer service
and reliability. We’re proud of that . . . and we’re proud that so far, we’re
doing the job they expected.

Also, I found an interesting sentence in an article that New York Magazine
book critic Walter Kirn wrote on actor Warren Beatty and that appeared in Time
Magazine on 8/23/99 titled 'President
Bulworth.' The sentence of note read that Mr. Beatty refused to quash rumors
that he had been approached by unnamed Illuminati urging him to seek a spot on
the presidential national ticket, as of August 23, 1999. I emailed Kirn to
ask him, among other things, where he got the notion to refer to these people
as 'Illuminati' in the first place. No response yet. In his book 'Blood
Lines of the Illuminati' author Fritz Springmeier claims that the Beatty's are
a Satanic bloodline family.

I received the following from a chap working on AI (artificial intelligence)
at MIT. I sent him a query on Freemasons at that institution:

"Mark, I have been told that, until some time in the 1970s IIRC, al Institute
Professors at MIT were Freemasons before they became
Institute Professors (the title of Institute Professor carries with it
perpetual tenure, a handsome salary, and extreme freedom - current
examples are Noam Chomsky and Marvin Minsky). Vennevar Bush, one of the more
illustrious of MIT's presidents (and MIT Corporation chairman), and Institute
Professor Harold Edgerton (the strobe photography guy (remember pictures of
bullets frozen in flight and balloons half way through bursting?) - someone I
personally met years ago, before he died), were both Freemasons."

I sent Chomsky an email asking if he was affiliated with the Grand Lodge or
the Grand Orient (there's a big difference). No response yet. I've only seen
the war between English and French Masonry exposed in one book, John Daniel's
magnum opus 'Scarlet The Beast.' You really must buy this book.

I just thought I'd check in with these interesting items.

Mark

Starbucks 'Killer' Recants, New Questions Emerge
 in Intern's Death

When Carl Derek Cooper confessed last March to the July 1997
slayings of onetime Clinton intern Mary Caity Mahoney and
two other workers at a Washington, DC Starbucks, suspicions
of a White House connection quickly evaporated.

But a funny thing happened on the way to Cooper's trial. He
recanted his confession, the primary piece of evidence
police had linking him to the crime.

And if that wasn't enough to set off a fresh round of
frenzied speculation, now a new investigation suggests
Mahoney could have been an extremely inconvenient witness in
 the Monica Lewinsky case.

"I swear on my father's grave and my son's life that I
didn't do Starbucks," Cooper told the FBI shortly after he
admitted his guilt to local police, according to courtroom
testimony reported by the Washington Post last week.

Now it emerges that Cooper told police several different
stories about the Starbucks murders; once blaming an
acquaintance for the killings, another time claiming he was
 merely a lookout.

But after 54 hours of questioning, Cooper's lawyer says he
 buckled.

"No matter how many times Mr. Cooper denied his involvement,
they kept pressuring him. They kept pressuring him until
they got what they wanted," attorney Steven Kirsch told US
District Court Judge Joyce Hens Green, according to
Thursday's Washington Times. Kirsch wants Green to rule the
confession inadmissible at trial on the grounds it was
 coerced.

The motive in the Starbuck's massacre was supposedly
robbery, though none of the $10,000 cash on hand was taken
even after Mahoney and her two co-workers were felled by a
fusillade of bullets. Casting further doubt on the robbery
theory: five of the ten shots fired hit the former Clinton
intern, including an execution bullet fired into the back of
 her head.

The same week Cooper recanted, new information emerged about
Mahoney's background and her possible ties to the Monica
 Lewinsky case.

Author David M. Hoffman, who spent a year investigating
Mahoney's murder, tells Globe Magazine's Tom Kuncl that the
Starbucks massacre came just three days after Monica told
Clinton she was going to tell her parents about their
 relationship.

According to Monica Clinton reacted angrily, telling her,
"It's a crime to threaten the President."

Hoffman's claim is corroborated by the Starr Report.

"Monica took the threat seriously," Hoffman told Globe,
"telling Linda Tripp that she feared for both their lives if
her affair with Clinton ever became public."

"I don't want to wind up like Caity Mahoney," Monica is
 rumored to have told friends.

The Tripp tapes amply document Monica's fears for her own
physical safety, featuring no fewer than four exchanges
where the Clinton girlfriend voices sentiments such as: "I
would not cross these people for fear of my life."

Hoffman claims to have uncovered new details about Mary
Mahoney's time at the White House, which, if true, suggest
the White House alum could have played a key role in the
Clinton sex scandal despite her own homosexuality:

"For many months, Mary, an outspoken lesbian and good
hearted den mother for other young White House interns, had
been listening to tearful stories from them about alleged
sexual passes made at them by Bill Clinton. She'd begun to
tell others she planned to do something to help them."

Also, reports Hoffman, "a blockbuster piece of gossip
swirling through Washington (at the time of Mahoney's death)
was based on a columnist's blind item that a former White
House intern whose name began with the letter M was about to
reveal news of a sexual relationship with Bill Clinton."

Was it Mahoney, Clinton damage controllers no doubt
 wondered?

Meanwhile, the fuse had been lit on another White House sex
bombshell just two days before the Starbucks killings.
That's when cyberscribe Matt Drudge first reported that
Clinton had put the moves on a then-unnamed White House
 volunteer.

It would be three more weeks till the world knew her name:
Kathleen Willey. But by early July 1997 White House damage
controllers knew they had a serious intern problem on their
 hands.

Carl Derek Cooper is scheduled to go on trial for Mary Caity
 Mahoney's murder on April 10.

Dear Friends and RMNews Readers,

I am sending this out hoping that it will explain why I have not been as

CONTRAILS OVER RUMOR MILL NEWS
Posted By: RAYELAN
Date: Sunday, 20 February 2000, at 3:40 a.m.

In Response To: What's Wrong with This Picture? (Ghost_Writer)

About a month ago I walked outside and directly over my house was a tic tac
toe contrail pattern. Instead of two lines intersecting two lines... there
were five lines intersecting five lines. The pattern was directly over my
head.

I ran in to get a camera, but discovered I had no film.

The next week was the day the ATT Golf Tournament began in Pebble Beach,
which is across Monterey Bay from me.

The contrails in the sky that day were unbelievable. My doctor's office is
around the corner from me. (He is one of us. If you have ever listened to
Radio Liberty, you have heard him.) I had an appointment with him that day
and commented on the contrails. Later than day, his assistant called me to
talk about the contrails.

I told her they were bigger and longer than any I had ever seen. Instead of
many lines criss crossing, there would be one very fat contrail in the sky,
strectching from horizon to horizon. The moment one fat one would start
puffing up and dissipating, an airplane would be laying down another one. The
contrails went from horizon to horizon, a distance of about 50 to 60 miles...
from the Santa Cruz mountains to the other side of the Bay where Monterey,
Pacific Grove, Pebble Beach and Carmel are located.

I have never seen anything like it in my life. The contrails appeared to go
straight down into the ground. In the Santa Cruz mountians, at the point
where one contrail looked as if it touched the ground, something that looked
like grey smoke was coming up.

The other end of the largest contrail vanished into the horizon over Pebble
Beach, Pacific Grove and Carmel. This is the area where all the movie stars
and golf celebrities were playing golf at the ATT --- formerly known as the
Crosby. Stars like Clint Eastwood, Kevin Costner, and Jack Lemmon were
present. It would be interesting to know if any of the golfers or actors
became ill after the tournament.

Since the first spraying, I have been so weak and exhausted that I can barely
function.

I have been having problems unrelated to contrails for two years now. I
injured my knee and suddenly I developed a whole syndrome of problems.

I have been diagnosed with fibromyalgia, chronic fatigue, irritable bowel,
closed eleocecal valve and others I can't even remember.

I have tried everything from liver flushes, to parasite cleasning to all
manner of vitamins and herbs. In August of 1999, I felt that I finally had it
under control and I resumed lecturing and giving workshops.

In November, after a trip to Florida, I became ill again. Then in January I
caught the flu. It lingered for weeks. Just as I was getting over the flu,
the contrails appeared. Since the contrails, there are days that I can't
function. I am exhaustedbeyond description and my mind is numb and foggy.

Now you know why I haven't been writing as much as I used to.

Today was one of my good days. I count my good days as the days that my mind
functions the way it used to. Most of the days I walk around in a fog. At
times I even feel dizzy and disoriented, like I am going to fall down.

When the contrails on overhead, I can taste a chemical taste on my lips. I
usually have colloidal silver with me and I wipe down with it. I also drink a
lot of it and spray it on my face and clothes. I don't know if it does any
good, but it makes me feel better.

I do not know if my exhaustion comes from the contrails

Forging a New Japan

Summary

Last week, Japan's foreign ministry announced that Tokyo is
considering deploying vessels to patrol the Strait of Malacca,
where shipping has been plagued by piracy. The announcement
coincides with a much broader debate over Japan's use of the armed
forces and the very constitution that has limited their use for the
last half-century. Forced by economic circumstance, Japan is
beginning to undergo a sea-change in its thinking. Japan is
beginning to come to grips with a reality it has tried to deny - It
is a great power with strategic interests as pressing as its
economic ones.

Analysis

Last week the Japanese government announced that it is considering
sending ships from its Maritime Safety Agency (MSA)
http://www.stratfor.com/asia/commentary/0002180030.htm, the
equivalent of the U.S. Coast Guard, to help patrol the Strait of
Malacca, in order to stop piracy. Yasako Kurihama, a Japanese
Foreign Ministry official, was quoted as saying that Japan might
formally propose such patrols at a conference to be held in
Singapore in March.

The Strait of Malacca is among the most strategically valuable
waterways in the world, connecting the Pacific and Indian Oceans
and serving as the major waterway between Japan and its oil sources
in the Persian Gulf. The Strait has been the site of increasing
acts of piracy. Increasing numbers of the more than 2,000 ships
that move through the Strait daily are subject to hijacking. The
Japanese are positioning themselves to join forces from Malaysia,
Indonesia, Singapore, China and South Korea to patrol the waterway.

But there is a much larger context than merely the control of
piracy. Tokyo's proposal comes during a growing debate over the
possible revision of Article 9 of the Japanese constitution. The
device with which Japan swore off militarism after World War II,
Article 9 states that, "the Japanese people forever renounce war as
a sovereign right of the nation and the threat or use of force as
means of settling international disputes. In order to accomplish
the aim of the preceding paragraph, land, sea and air forces as
well as other war potential will never be maintained. The right of
belligerency of the state will not be recognized."

Leading Japanese politicians are calling for changing the
constitution, which was in large part the handiwork of the United
States. Former Prime Minister Yasuhiro Nakasone has been a key
figure advocating the constitution's modification. Early this
month, The New York Times quoted him as saying, "We have had the
experience of the last 50 years, and all of the shortcomings of the
defects of our constitution have become visible. Now, as we go
into the 21st century, there is a surging trend of wanting to
review or revisit the structures of the state."

Last week, an unprecedented debate on revising the constitution
opened in the upper house of parliament, with the dominant Liberal
Democratic Party and the Liberal Party calling for a constitutional
amendment and the Communist and Social Democratic Parties opposing
any change. The Democratic Party of Japan and the New Komeito, a
Buddhist party, appear willing to discuss change in general,
without necessarily agreeing to the revision of Article 9. But in
effect, the Japanese establishment, represented by the LDP and to a
lesser extent by the Liberals, are now of the opinion that Article
9 should be revised in the context of possible broader
institutional changes.

This is a sea change in Japanese thinking. The Liberal Party's
Sadao Irano said that "a Japan that forgot history and tradition in
post-war years is being buffeted by sham pacifism, belief in the
undisciplined market, biased human rights and collapse of
education. The cause of such a state of affairs lies in the after
effects of our defeat in the war and the occupation regime, the so-
called Potsdam syndrome." In other words, the constitution is an
American invention, imposed on Japan in opposition to the country's
own traditions, that needs to be revised.

These views still represent the extreme of public discourse, but
they are very much part of a newly respectable viewpoint that is
critically reviewing three issues: pacifism, the uncontrolled free
market and Western definitions of human rights. While the focus of
political debate has been Article 9, the constitutional debate
really
