When his car had slowed to 10 miles an hour, Jack pulled over, but only partially. Let the cop worry about the potential traffic hazard. Maybe some other car will tweak his backside with a mirror. The cop was stepping out of his car, the big pad in hand. Bob? Bob from Church? Jack sunk farther into his trench coat. This was worse than the coming ticket. A Christian cop catching a guy from his own church. A guy who happened to be a little eager to get home after a long day at the office. A guy he was about to play golf with tomorrow. Jumping out of the car, he approached a man he saw every Sunday, a man he'd never seen in uniform. "Hi, Bob. Fancy meeting you like this." "Hello, Jack." No smile. "Guess you caught me red-handed in a rush to see my wife and kids." "Yeah, I guess." Bob seemed uncertain. Good. "I've seen some long days at the office lately. I'm afraid I bent the rules a bit-just this once." Jack toed at a pebble on the pavement. "Diane said something about roast beef and potatoes tonight. Know what I mean?" "I know what you mean. I also know that you have a reputation in our precinct." Ouch. This was not going in the right direction. Time to change tactics. "What'd you clock me at?" "Seventy! Would you sit back in your car please?" "Now wait a minute here, Bob. I checked as soon as I saw you. I was barely nudging 65." The lie seemed to come easier with every ticket. "Please, Jack, in the car." Flustered, Jack hunched himself through the still-open door. Slamming it shut, he stared at the dash board. He was in no rush to open the window. The minutes ticked by. Bob scribbled away on the pad. Why hadn't he asked for a driver's license? Whatever the reason, it would be a month of Sundays before Jack ever sat near this cop again. A tap on the door jerked his head to the left. There was Bob, a folded paper in hand. Jack rolled down the window a mere two inches, just enough room for Bob to pass him the slip. "Thanks." Jack could not quite keep the sneer out of his voice. Bob returned to his police car without a word. Jack watched his retreat in the mirror. Jack unfolded the sheet of paper. How much was this one going to cost? Wait a minute. What was this? Some kind of joke? Certainly not a ticket. Jack began to read: "Dear Jack, Once upon a time I had a daughter. She was six when killed by a car. You guessed it -- a speeding driver. A fine and three months in jail, and the man was free. Free to hug his daughters, all three of them. I only had one, and I'm going to have to wait until Heaven before I can ever hug her again. A thousand times I\'ve tried to forgive that man. A thousand times I thought I had. Maybe I did, but I need to do it again. Even now. Pray for me. And be careful. My son is all I have left." signed "Bob" Jack turned around in time to see Bob's car pull away and head down the road. Jack watched until it disappeared. A full 15 minutes later, he, too, pulled away and drove slowly home, praying for forgiveness and hugging a surprised wife and kids when he arrived. Funny how we believe what the newspapers say, but question what the Bible says. Here are the latest highlights. -- Larry is healing from his recent beating, the ninth such incident. He thought they might kill him but this appeared to be a warning. He suspects that it might be a Hillary warning telling him not to mess with her. Larry believes Hillary may be nominated during a brokered convention and the Buddhist Temple may destroy Gore. -- He suspects that the White House e-mail releases came from the Clintons in an attempt to help Hillary and hurt Gore. -- Hillary indeed had an indictment prepared against her before Starr disbanded. Nichols personally saw and went over the part regarding information he provided. In the testimony of Hickman Ewing in the Susan McDougal trial, he testified that there was an indictment drawn. He claimed it was not uncommon to draft them but then not actually serve them. -- Asa Hutchinson was the spy for Jackson Stephens. Stephens was kept informed about what was going on during secret discussions. -- Larry gave me the names but I am not allowed to divulge them at this time of the well-known television journalists who have used him as a source many, many times. You would be shocked and would recognize their faces on television. They would always ask him to guide them to the next story. These people never really went for the jugular because it would destroy their careers. They do know the truth but won't report it. -- The building blocks of the Clinton machine are as follows: 1) Everyone has a price or has something to hide... 2) Reality is as one perceives it. They used these successfully in Arkansas and he brought it to D.C. -- If Bill were really holding meetings and doing all of the things he claims he is getting done for the American people, he wouldn't have time to chase women. He is not doing all of the work that is reported. He works less now than ever and the pool reporters are fools. Don't believe anything you see -- every bit of it is scripted. -- Richard Ball from Virginia came with his son to help Larry with phone calls and other business. He was recently hit with a blackjack or glove filled with something that left a burn like bruise on his face and his eye swollen shut. Luckily, his son was not hurt. He thinks he heard a thug tell him to "leave town." The police have no leads in this case or Nichols' most recent beating. -- Larry is set to testify in the case against Clinton before the Arkansas Bar. They will go back to Larry's original lawsuit for info. Clinton does not want him to testify. -- Trent Lott was part of the fix because they were blackmailing him. He was involved in his own phony federal loan and land deal. Orrin Hatch has the info against Lott. Larry was giving info to a research staffer who kept him informed. He knew that Lott had caved on witnesses a half hour before Lott announced it on television. As we remember, Lott gave Tom Daschle veto power over witnesses. Lott stabbed him in the back. In addition, Larry has unconfirmed rumors about Lott's two homosexual encounters while a cheerleader in college. Larry had put off throat surgery until the Senate hearing and was set to sit back and watch a good show. The whole thing fell apart when it turned out that Juanita Broaddrick was to be the first witness called. Three other women were ready to testify about sexual harassment or worse. One was Sally Perdue. Although he had a consensual affair with her, the first time they met he was literally ripping off her clothing. These witnesses could have done irreparable damage and the country would have turned on Clinton. Lott and Daschle could not let that happen. Having said that, there is a threat looming on the horizon -- a threat that may materialize in the House as early as tomorrow. The House is expected to begin debating H.R 4717, the Archer-Houghton "Full and Fair Political Activity Disclosure Act of 2000" -- a bill that turns out to be neither full nor fair. H.R. 4717 would force affected organizations (like GOA) to release many, if not all, of the names and addresses of their members to the IRS -- a requirement which is blatantly unconstitutional. Many years ago, the state of Alabama had tried to get the names of NAACP members, but its attempts were beaten back by the Supreme Court in NAACP v. Alabama (1958). Despite this obvious precedent, this bill is now targeting so-called 501(c)(4) lobbying organizations -- groups like GOA and NRA-ILA -- which cannot receive tax-deductible contributions from the public. In contrast, there are many liberal foundations that are set up as 501(c)(3) organizations -- groups like the Million Mom March Foundation which are limited in the amount of direct lobbying that they can do. Even so, these foundations can still spend up to $1 million per year in direct lobbying and conduct voter education campaigns while still receiving tax-deductible contributions. All this to say: H.R. 4717 applies to 501(c)(4) organizations but not to 501(c)(3) organizations. Thus, this bill regulates GOA and NRA, but not anti-gun organizations such as the Violence Policy Center, the Million Mom March Foundation or HCI's Center to Prevent Handgun Violence. Unfair? You bet it is. But the bigger issue is the threat this bill poses to the Constitution. This bill, sponsored by retiring Representative Bill Archer (R-TX), will allow Republicans to claim they have "done something" about campaign finance reform. But in doing so, they're blowing holes in the Constitution. The Supreme Court correctly noted in the NAACP decision that forcing groups to disclose their members' names to the government would "constitute a[n] effective restraint on freedom of association." It goes without saying that an activist who sends a check to GOA to help protect his Second Amendment rights doesn't want his name being registered with the IRS as a gun owner. And for that reason, GOA will fight this bill "tooth and nail." And if this bill were to become law, GOA would not comply. We would fight it in court, and exhaust every possible resource, because we are not going to turn over our members' names to the IRS. This underscores why it is SO VERY IMPORTANT that we defeat this bill in the Congress! GOA would rather spend its members' dollars defending 2nd Amendment freedoms, as opposed to spending hundreds of thousands of dollars fighting 1st Amendment battles in court. ACTION: Please ask your Congressman to OPPOSE H.R. 4717, the Archer-Houghton Political Activity Disclosure Act. Tell them the government has no business keeping tabs on who you're associating with. Moreover, this kind of legislation is dangerous as far as gun ownership is concerned. The registration of gun owners could very well be the first step towards confiscation in the future. He was much better in Braveheart. He does action scenes well. But this role required ACTING in closeup, and he just can't do it. He ruined the movie. He probably made 15 or 20 Mil for this picture. Only in an economic system like this could a bad actor be paid that kind of money for such shoddy work. June 30, 2000 Gore resists calls to halt oil drilling in Colombia By Bill Sammon THE WASHINGTON TIMES Vice President Al Gore, who controls at least $500,000 worth of stock in Occidental Petroleum, has ignored pleas from environmentalists to fight the company's plan to drill for oil on sacred Indian land in Colombia. The Gore family stands to benefit substantially if Occidental finds the 1.5 billion barrels of oil it estimates are buried beneath the pristine forest inhabited for centuries by the U'wa Indians. The 5,000-member tribe is threatening mass suicide if Occidental goes forward with drilling. But the Clinton-Gore administration is pushing more than $1 billion of aid to Colombia that Occidental says will help protect its oil interests. The money will be used in part to fight guerrillas who have often attacked the company's pipeline, spilling more crude than the Exxon Valdez. Gore supporters inside and outside the administration are pushing hard for the Occidental project. Scott Pastrick, the former treasurer of the Democratic National Committee who in 1996 prepared "call sheets" for the vice president's use in fund-raising solicitations, was hired the next year by Occidental to promote the project. The Clinton-Gore administration, in turn, hired a former Occidental lobbyist who was pressing the Energy Department to back the drilling. Lobbyist Theresa Fariello was hired last year by Energy Secretary Bill Richardson. "There has been a lot of back-room negotiations between the Clinton administration and the Colombian government on behalf of Occidental," said environmentalist Stephen Kretzmann of Amazon Watch. "Occidental is a favorite of the Clinton-Gore administration, particularly Gore." In recent weeks, violence has escalated between the Colombian military and U'wa Indians who have been blockading a road to the Occidental drilling site. Worried police refuse to give DNA samples BY DAVID TAYLOR THOUSANDS of police officers have refused to give DNA samples to a new Home Office database amid concerns that the genetic fingerprints could be used against them in paternity suits. Police officers are also said to be anxious that their samples could be used to check for drugs, but their big concern is that the Child Support Agency will be able to access the computer database in a bid to track down fathers who shirk their responsibility. The Home Office wants to collect DNA profiles of all officers who come into contact with evidence at crime scenes so they can be eliminated as suspects. Advances in forensic science mean tiny quantities of saliva, sweat, hairs, microscopic blood spots, semen or even skin cells can provide virtually conclusive proof of an alleged offender's presence at a crime scene. It is now possible to produce a full genetic fingerprint of someone who has merely brushed against a surface while committing an offence. The Home Office wants to hold samples of 75,000 officers who might be expected to work at the scenes of crime. But the scheme, launched in February with £3million Home Office backing for processing and loading files, has so far received only 21,000 samples from the officers asked to volunteer. The Home Office hopes it will have all of the target profiles by the end of July, but officials have been forced to reassure officers that their cell samples will not be used as a means of proving they are errant fathers or to expose them as drug users. Peter Hands, regional manager of the DNA training project for the Forensic Science Service, said: "Some officers are absolutely convinced that outside agencies such as the CSA will have access to the elimination database. "This is untrue. A search can only be requested by a senior officer against a specific named officer for elimination purposes on a specific crime." Mr Hands makes the point that every police recruit is required to give fingerprints so forensic officers can eliminate rogue prints from their inquiries. He added: "The use of the DNA database will be no different from the way in which those fingerprints are used." The reluctance of some rank and file officers to comply makes a mockery of the expectations placed on members of the public who are routinely asked to volunteer for mass DNA screening to help police eliminate innocent people from rape inquiries. The rape of two teenage girls in a Surrey park earlier this year prompted DNA testing of 12,000 on a nearby estate and surrounding area as police hunted a local man. DOJ Confirms Secret "Firewalls" Exist for White House Computers 6/30/00 - A Justice Department lawyer June 30 admitted in federal district court that indeed there exists previously undisclosed inventories of White House e-mails captured by computer- system firewalls protective buffers on a computer system apparently unknown by the Clinton/Gore administration. Betsy Shapiro, the Justice lawyer defending the White House in the "Filegate" case brought by Judicial Watch, told U.S. District Court Judge Royce C. Lamberth that though she was prohibited "for security reasons" to provide specific details on this previously unknown firewall protection system and its capture of e-mails, there are inventories of such e-mails stored on backup tapes. These would be in addition to otherwise normally stored emails at the White House. Insight was the first to disclose the existence of this firewall system and the fact that it was capable of capturing e-mail in early June (see Insight Online, "Electronic Skullduggery?" June 19). Shapiro said that while it appears backup tapes on this computer firewall system are maintained they only go back for about four months. She did not clarify whether such tapes are made every four months and stored or whether they are only maintained for up to four months. She also told Lamberth that while the firewall computer backups appear to store the outgoing and incoming e-mail of White House electronic traffic, they do not store the text or any attachments, but only the name of the sender and recipient and apparently the date and time sent. Insight learned of the secret White House firewall-system "inventories" when asking questions about why it appears to be so difficult for the White House to 1) capture e-mail, 2) maintain e-mail, 3) read stored e-mail and 4) reconstruct such e-mail as requested by various courts, federal law-enforcement agencies and Congress. Insight was the first to break the White House e-mail caper back in 1998 (see related stories located in Insight Online's Investigative Archives and in the Exclusive Reports section) plus the still simmering matter of overlooked telephone-record call-detail reports going back several years. Shapiro also told Lamberth that, despite its best efforts, the White House will not be able to comply with the courts order to turn over copies of e-mails requested by Judicial Watch for possibly another year. Interestingly, the White House secretly was ordered weeks ago based on an order unsealed June 30 by the judge to turn over original e-mail tapes to unknown federal law-enforcement agencies. Shapiro said that deals have been struck with these law enforcement sources to now accomplish the court's order. Effectively, Insight is told, the White House will turn over original tapes of stored emails and then "mirror" copies will be given back to the Clinton administration. Why the White House is capable of finding and turning over such e-mail tapes to federal law-enforcement authorities but not to Congress or the court in the Filegate case was not made clear by Shapiro, Lamberth or others by deadline. What is clear, however, is that the judge said waiting up to a year for the White House to turn over court-ordered copies of selected e-mails to Judicial Watch was unacceptable. What remedy Lamberth may seek is unknown. However, when Insight checked with sources within federal law-enforcement, it was made clear that based on early reviews of such materials (directly and through other sources) they did not find it difficult to retrieve the sought-after electronic messages. Much was the same two years ago when a White House computer contractor was able to reconstruct thousands of e-mails in short order. This was done under the guise of "Project X" a secret project begun once the White House was informed of a massive computer glitch that diverted up to 1 million e-mails to a default computer server instead of to an authorized backup system. The result of this glitch was that scores of subpoenas for White House e-mail traffic never were turned over to Congress, federal law-enforcement agencies, independent counsels and Judicial Watch (among others). Existence of the "secret" White House computer-firewall-system e-mail captures and backup tapes adds yet another layer of complications for Clinton/Gore administration officials who have been stung by the continuing revelations of hidden, secret or otherwise, unknown e-mails involving a cast of characters linked to various scandals. Rockwell, Jr. The mainstream press is trying to ignore it, but the government's role in the fire at Waco seven years ago is finally on trial, thanks to the wrongful-death lawsuit brought by the victims' families. At last, the possibility for establishing wrongdoing now presents itself. There is no chance, however, for true justice. The men, women, and children gassed and burned at government hands cannot be brought back to life. There will be no jail terms for those responsible. At best, the families may get some monetary compensation. And perhaps we will see an end to the blaming of the victims and the jailing of those who managed to survive. How telling that this trial takes place while Bill Clinton is busy trying to buff up his image for the history books. Doesn't he know that after the smoke of the last eight years clears, the Waco massacre will emerge as the most significant domestic event of his presidency? He should have been forced out in the days following the incident. Congress should have impeached him then instead of pretending that his worst crime was fibbing about his White House sexual romps. Waco will be remembered forever because it sums up key features of the political culture of the 1990s: the untrammeled power of the presidency, the complicity of the media in covering up federal crimes, the bias against religion among the power elite, and the disregard of individual rights that is habitual in our time. How ironic, how telling, that all these developments have taken place under the cloak of "liberalism," a word that once referred to the attempt to circumscribe the power of the state. Who can forget the live pictures of the Davidian community in flames? Clearly, the government was murdering those people. For weeks, they had been fighting for life against a government that was terrorizing them. This was no doomsday cult bent on suicide. For some strange reason, and it's never been entirely clear why, the government hated those people. After the massacre, one hoped that even liberals would have sensed the injustice. Surely the old lefties in the White House would recall their past as crusaders against federal militarization, their shock at Kent State, their sympathies with marginalized groups, and rise up to denounce this federal oppression. Surely there would be shock and outrage, even within the executive department. Resignations would follow. Clinton would be discredited, and those responsible for this outrage would be brought to justice. It was not to be so. Over the next few weeks, the media cooperated with the Clinton administration in an amazing cover-up of what was plainly evident. Far from investigating the fire and the lies of the White House, the media cabal demonized the Branch Davidians and smeared anyone -- the "lunatic fringe" -- sympathetic with their plight. We were told that they had probably committed suicide, or, if they hadn't, they merited no sympathy because of their crazy religion and/or child abuse and/or gun stockpiling and/or drug use. Take your pick of crimes; the Branch Davidians, most of them dead with the survivors hauled off to prison, were not in a position to defend themselves. Reno went on television to "take responsibility." How courageous she is, the news weeklies told us. The meaning of the event had a further significance. It was the largest display in the post-war period of what has become of American liberalism: not a movement dedicated to protecting the liberties of minorities or the rights of citizens, but to defending every manner of coercion at the hands of the Leviathan state. It is for political reasons that they turn a blind eye to the crimes of states they support. This same fanatical ideology denied that the Soviets had committed crimes against humanity in the Ukraine and the Gulag. After all, these crimes were committed in the name of progress, which to the leftist mind means collectivization and the eradication of bourgeois prejudices. This same cast of mind seeks to deny that the Clinton administration did anything wrong in Waco. Even the government's case boils down to the claim that if the Davidians had only obeyed the government, there would have been no deaths; hence, it is the fault of the Davidians. In 1993, these American liberals, who had just finished cheering on the destruction of Iraq and would later whoop it up as bombs fell on Serbia, were willing to defend the use of military weapons against American citizens who were minding their own business. (AP) - Shrugging off the threat of lawsuits, Orange County officials became the first in the state to take advantage of a new Indiana law that allows government entities to post the Ten Commandments. Renditions of ``God Bless America'' and scripture readings echoed from the steps of the county courthouse Saturday as nearly 300 people who began gathering just before midnight watched officials unveil a plaque with the religious tenets the moment the new law went into effect. ``You talk about being moved. Those people were really full of spirit - they were just so excited that it was happening,'' said County Commissioner Charles W. Hall. The new state law requires that the commandments be posted with other historical documents, and the county did just that, displaying the Ten Commandments in a glass case between a copy of the Declaration of Independence and the Bill of Rights. ``I'm real pleased,'' said State Rep. Jerry Denbo, who sponsored the legislation. ``We wanted to set the tone for the rest of the nation.'' No lawsuits had been filed over the county's display Saturday, but Indiana Civil Liberties Union attorney Kenneth Falk said earlier in the week that the group likely would sue if complaints were registered. The group already has sued the state over plans to place a Ten Commandments monument on the Statehouse lawn, claiming doing so would violate the U.S. Constitution by representing establishment of religion by the state. The proposed monument is to be inscribed with the Bill of Rights and the preamble to the U.S. Constitution in addition to the Ten Commandments to conform with the new state law. The American Civil Liberties Union sued over a similar display of the Ten Commandments at a county courthouse in Wilkesboro, N.C., but a judge in May declined to order the display's removal after commissioners pledged to make it part of a larger display of historical documents. The ACLU said it wanted to see the display, completed about three weeks ago, before it would decide how to proceed. Jewish Civil War?
Burn, baby, burn.
THE burning of a synagogue in Jerusalem, apparently perpetrated by militant
ultra-Orthodox Jews, has sent shockwaves through Israel's secular majority -
prompting talk of a "War of the Jews".
Nobody was hurt in last week's arson raid on Kehilat Ya'ar Ramot synagogue,
which belongs to the "Conservative" stream of Judaism. But the incident has
evoked images of Holocaust-era attacks and led to fears that Jewish
fundamentalists are increasingly mimicking the violent behaviour more common
among their counterparts in the Islamic world.
The attack was the gravest in a series of "Jew-on-Jew" incidents. Opinion
polls show that a majority of Israelis now think the "internal" Jewish
fundamentalist threat will soon be as dangerous as the "external" Arab one.
Fears are rising that, once the peace process with the Palestinians is over,
widespread violence and possibly even civil war could break out between
Israeli Jews.
Strictly Orthodox Jews see Reform and Conservative Judaism - the movements to
which most of the world's Jews, especially in America, adhere to - as watered
down versions that pose a threat to their way of life by offering
alternative, more liberal forms of the religion.
Although the culprits responsible for the latest attack have yet to be
caught, there seems little doubt that it was the work of ultra-Orthodox
fanatics. Witnesses reported seeing men in traditional religious dress
fleeing as the flames raged.
One long-standing member of the synagogue's congregation said: "This conjures
up images of the Nazis - only it is happening in Israel and the perpetrators
are Jews. If there is one evil that you wouldn't expect to find in a Jewish
state, it is anti-Semitic violence.
"It must seem bizarre to Gentiles that, after surviving 2,000 years of
persecution at the hands of others, and with peace with the Palestinians just
around the corner, the Jews are now turning on each other."
The atmosphere in Jerusalem has deteriorated following the attack. On
Tuesday, several dozen Reform Jews from Florida needed an equal number of
policemen to protect them when they held a prayer service at the Western
("Wailing") Wall, Judaism's holiest site. Some women at the service wore
skullcaps and prayer shawls to the fury of nearby ultra-Orthodox worshippers
who believe that only men should wear such religious attire.
The arson raid was the second on Kehilat Ya'ar Ramot in less than a month.
Three weeks earlier, the front door of the synagogue, which had just been
renovated, was set alight and one of its walls daubed with threatening
graffiti. Public anger was expressed over the apparent reluctance among
politicians to condemn that attack. They were accused of being fearful of
alienating ultra-Orthodox voters.
The head of the Conservative movement in Israel, Rabbi Ehud Bandel, said:
"The lack of response by the authorities sent a signal to the extremists
that, in the Jewish state, you can set fire to synagogues, and it's back to
business as usual. Had the attack occurred elsewhere in the world, Israeli
officials would have taken great pains to condemn it."
Jerusalem's mayor, Ehud Olmert, who failed to speak out following the first
attack, made a point of condemning the latest arson. But Mr Olmert, a secular
politician who relies on ultra-Orthodox parties to maintain power in his
governing municipal coalition, refrained from calling it a hate crime or
identifying a group that might be responsible.
Rabbi Yisrael Meir Lau, one of Israel's leading clerics, also condemned the
second attack, but disappointed Conservative leaders by referring to Kehilat
Ya'ar Ramot as a "building" rather than a synagogue. Some ultra-Orthodox
members of the Knesset (parliament) failed to condemn the attack at all -
even suggesting that the Conservatives had set fire to their own synagogue in
order to "besmirch the religious public in Israel".
Hadas Bregman, a 29-year-old secular Jewish woman, said: "We are approaching
exploding point. I am all for 'live and let live', but it seems they are
not." Among recent decrees by ultra-Orthodox leaders in Jerusalem is one
forbidding women from using mobile phones in public - "for fear that it might
lead to prostitution".
Modern Israel was founded in 1948 as a secular state. The name of God was
deliberately excluded from its declaration of independence. Yet it has been
undergoing a process of increasing theocratisation in recent years. A high
birth rate among the ultra-Orthodox, who did not recognise the state at first
and played little part in its politics, has increased their influence
recently.
In addition, Israel's liberal form of proportional representation has given
small religious parties disproportionate bargaining power. Many secular
Israelis came close to despair last month when the ultra-Orthodox Shas

It is a monumental understatement to say that this appointment of Janet Reno raises many logical and disturbing questions. I doubt that even Clinton has the balls to declare martial law. This would alert everyone to the corruption in government. Of course he would first make it appear that we were in danger from some contrived enemy. Unfortunately many Americans are so "dumbed down" that they would see the pervert as a hero. There are even some on this list that believe Clinton is a victim of the "radical right" rather than a treasonous wimp. : Nobody was hurt in last week's arson raid on Kehilat
: Ya'ar Ramot synagogue, which belongs to the
: "Conservative" stream of Judaism. But the incident has
: evoked images of Holocaust-era attacks and led to fears
: that Jewish fundamentalists are increasingly mimicking
: the violent behaviour more common among their

: The attack was the gravest in a series of "Jew-on-Jew"

: "It must seem bizarre to Gentiles that, after surviving
: 2,000 years of persecution at the hands of others, and
: with peace with the Palestinians just around the corner,
: the Jews are now turning on each other."
: The atmosphere in Jerusalem has deteriorated following
: the attack. On Tuesday, several dozen Reform Jews from
: Florida needed an equal number of policemen to protect
: them when they held a prayer service at the Western
: ("Wailing") Wall, Judaism's holiest site. Some women at
: the service wore skullcaps and prayer shawls to the fury
: of nearby ultra-Orthodox worshippers who believe that
: only men should wear such religious attire.
: The arson raid was the second on Kehilat Ya'ar Ramot in
: less than a month. Three weeks earlier, the front door of

: graffiti. Public anger was expressed over the apparent
: reluctance among politicians to condemn that attack. They

: The head of the Conservative movement in Israel, Rabbi
: Ehud Bandel, said: "The lack of response by the
: authorities sent a signal to the extremists that, in the
: Jewish state, you can set fire to synagogues, and it's
: back to business as usual. Had the attack occurred
: elsewhere in the world, Israeli officials would have
: taken great pains to condemn it."
: Jerusalem's mayor, Ehud Olmert, who failed to speak out
: following the first attack, made a point of condemning
: the latest arson. But Mr Olmert, a secular politician who

: governing municipal coalition, refrained from calling it

On Thursday it was Texas Gov. George W. Bush's turn, who's up 13 points against Vice President Al Gore in the latest CNN-Gallup presidential poll and who suddenly finds himself a target of media race baiters like New York Times columnist Bob Herbert. After Bush wowed the crowd at Monday night's Congress of Racial Equality dinner with a stunningly good speech, Herbert swung into action in a column titled "A Different Republican"? Is Bush really so different from the old-style Republicans, the columnist wondered - folks who he and most other liberals suspect are nothing more than closet KKK members? But Bush is harder to smear on this count, with "compassionate conservatism" on his lips and record support in his home state from blacks and Hispanics. Time for plan B: guilt by association. And so Herbert asks, "What about the company he keeps?" The Times columnist hit Bush with every example he could find of people once accused of slurring blacks who later ended up in Texas state government, and even takes a swipe at the compassionate conservative for sharing the dais with fellow CORE invitee, talk radio host Bob Grant, whom Herbert erroneously suggests was once fired for making an on-air racial slur. But if guilt by association is the name of the game, Herbert and his compadres may find that sword cuts both ways. For instance, when will he be critiquing the Clintons for fraternizing with the likes of well-known anti-Semite Al Sharpton? Or even the Rev. Jesse Jackson, whom the White House signed up during the Monicagate scandal as "spiritual advisor" and who is now its chief emissary to black America. Interviewed by Jacob Sullum Simply having one of Thomas Szasz's books on your shelf can lead to an argument. Explaining his most familiar contention--that there is, strictly speaking, no such thing as "mental illness"--almost invariably does. And the very mention of his name has been known to provoke a heated response from certain people. I once asked a psychiatrist I knew if he was familiar with Szasz's work. "Oh, he's crazy!" he exclaimed, inadvertently illustrating Szasz's point that such labels are often used to stigmatize people who offend or disturb us. I don't think this psychiatrist was ready to have Szasz committed; he was expressing an intellectual rather than a clinical judgment. But Szasz's critique of psychiatry suggests that such distinctions are ultimately arbitrary. A psychiatrist could, if he were so inclined, diagnose as mentally ill someone with whose worldview he disagreed--which is essentially what it means to say that a person is "suffering from delusions." If the psychiatrist could make a case that the "patient" might harm himself or others (a prediction that many psychiatrists privately concede they are ill-equipped to make), he could have him confined and forcibly "treated." In Szasz's view, this should not be possible. For decades, what he calls his "passion against coercion" has driven him to denounce involuntary mental hospitalization, while his insistence on individual responsibility has made him a dedicated opponent of the insanity defense. If someone commits a crime, Szasz says, he should be punished, not "treated." But if he has not violated anyone's rights, he should be left alone, no matter how bizarre his behavior. As unpopular as such ideas are now, they were even more heretical when Szasz started to express them in the late 1950s. Born in Budapest in 1920, he immigrated to the United States in 1938 and attended the University of Cincinnati, where he majored in physics as an undergraduate and earned an M.D. in 1944. After a residency in psychiatry, he underwent psychoanalytic training at the Chicago Institute for Psychoanalysis, where he remained as a staff member for five years. In 1956 he took a position as a professor of psychiatry at the State University of New York in Syracuse, where he is now a professor emeritus. Shortly thereafter, he began to publish articles that questioned the basic premises of his profession, work that would lead to his classic The Myth of Mental Illness in 1961. "I became interested in writing this book approximately ten years ago," he wrote in the preface, "when I became increasingly impressed by the vague, capricious, and generally unsatisfactory character of the widely used concept of mental illness and its corollaries, diagnosis, prognosis, and treatment. It seemed to me that although the notion of mental illness made good historical sense--stemming as it does from the historical identity of medicine and psychiatry--it made no rational sense." Szasz's bold attack on a concept that most people took for granted (and still do), bolstered by the efforts of civil libertarians and other social critics, encouraged skepticism about the justification for coercive psychiatry. That uneasiness led to legal reforms in the 1960s and '70s that made it harder to lock up people deemed to be crazy. "Mental illness is a myth whose function is to disguise and thus render more palatable the bitter pill of moral conflicts in human relations," Szasz wrote in "The Myth of Mental Illness," a paper that appeared in American Psychologist the year before his book of the same name was published. "In asserting that there is no such thing as mental illness, I do not deny that people have problems coping with life and each other." Likewise, Szasz has never denied that organic conditions--say, Alzheimer's disease or untreated syphilis--can have an impact on thought and behavior. But he insists on evidence of an underlying physical defect, and he emphasizes that behavior itself is never a disease. "Classifying thoughts, feelings, and behaviors as diseases is a logical and semantic error, like classifying the whale as a fish," he writes on his Web site (www.szasz.com). This error has serious consequences, Szasz argues: "The classification of (mis)behavior as illness provides an ideological justification for state- sponsored social control." As he put it in his 1990 book The Untamed Tongue, "What people nowadays call mental illness, especially in a legal context, is not a fact, but a strategy; not a condition, but a policy; in short it is not a disease that the alleged patient has, but a decision which those who call him mentally ill make about how to act toward him, whether he likes it or not." Not having seen the picture, I cannot speak to its historical accuracy. However, I must admit that I am pleased to see someone once again tackle the American Revolution in cinema. I fear that far too many Americans--particularly our young people--no longer know or care anything about the sacrifices that were made to give us this great nation. For this July Fourth weekend we should try to learn something about those brave men. The holiday weekend is not solely for parades, outdoor barbecues, or a signal to department stores to display their fall merchandise. The holiday is to honor our Founding Fathers and our wondrous experiment in democracy. The date was April 19, 1775; the place was Concord Bridge. On that one historic day, a number of brave farmers and merchants blocked the path of the trained regulars of the British army. We know these patriots as the "Minutemen". The British were marching to destroy the powder and arms supplies of the colonists, thereby rendering them unable to defend themselves. The only obstacle to greater taxation, forced bondage, and further oppression were the guns of the Minutemen. These brave colonists were not perfect; they were undoubtedly flawed men. It is likely that some of them were slaveholders, a few of the Minutemen may have even lied about an adulterous affair. None of them had even heard of a trigger lock. So who were they to dare defy King George? The Minutemen were simply ordinary men of extraordinary courage. They were not moderate in their views; some would even call them extreme. They did not stick their moistened finger in the air to see which way the political winds were blowing, nor did they consult poll numbers to see if the great majority of colonists favored their actions. No doubt many of the colonists thought the Minutemen and the British were only engaged in a partisan battle. Most thought it was only politics. Some of them thought that these men were crazy and ought to be hanged. Many of the colonists were busy planting their crops or running their businesses. The events on Concord Bridge had nothing to do with them. They couldn't concern themselves with the actions taking place on a single bridge. They wished these merchants and farmers would get back to doing the people's business. The men on Concord Bridge did not see their actions as historic. They did not see themselves as heroes or revolutionaries. They merely accepted their duty. And they had no idea if they would live to see the sunset. Nobody knows who fired the first shot, "the shot heard around the world." Yet history has not judged these few Minutemen harshly. We remember them because of their courage, and because when the smoke cleared that day, a nation was conceived. And as the spotlight of history was focused upon them, they did not scatter for the corner like cockroaches; they stood tall. These patriots stood for truth, honor, and freedom. Some of them even gave their lives. For that one brief moment in history, those simple men dared to array themselves in the garments of greatness. Thank God for the Minutemen! Thank God they didn't step aside, and thank God they didn't bow to popular opinion. We must not squander that for which they died. Like the Minutemen, we should always block the path of those who would deny us our liberty. And no matter what the century, let us hope there are always those patriots who will take their places on the bridges of freedom! The Confederate flag first fluttered from the Statehouse dome in 1962 to celebrate the Civil War's centennial. In recent years controversy over it mounted, with civil rights groups viewing it as a reminder of slavery and campaigning to have it removed. Supporters of the flag saw it as a reminder too but of the South's cultural heritage. In June, after a damaging tourism boycott of South Carolina organized by the NAACP, the South Carolina Legislature approved the compromise. But protesters insist they will continue to press the boycott until no Confederate flag flies on the Statehouse grounds. Defenders of the compromise say there is a symbolic difference between flying the flag on the Capitol building and elsewhere on the Statehouse grounds. Today the environmental scientist and leader of a group called Greenspirit has a new cause -- alerting the public to what he calls the "myth" that the Amazon rainforest is endangered by development and deforestation. "The Amazon is actually the least endangered forest in the world," states Moore in American Investigator's television newsmagazine documentary, "Clear-cutting the myths," hosted by former CBS and CNN newsman Reid Collins. Moore explains that, in the 20 years of warnings about deforestation, "only 10 percent of the Amazon has been converted to date from what was original forest to agriculture and settlement." The finding that the Amazon rainforest threat is a myth based on bad science and political agendas -- especially by unlikely critics such as Moore, other scientists and inhabitants of the region -- is not expected to sit well with a movement that has enlisted schoolchildren throughout the United States and celebrities ranging from Sting to Alex Baldwin to Chevy Chase to Tom Jones and Tony Bennett. And which has also raised tens of millions of dollars for environmental activist groups. "This is where I really have a problem with modern-day environmentalism," says Moore. "It confuses opinion with what we know to be true, and disguises what are really political agendas with environmental rhetoric. The fact of the matter is: There is a larger percentage of the Amazon rain forest intact than there are most other forests in this world." Moore left Greenpeace, the organization he helped found, in 1986, after finding himself at odds with other leaders of the group. "We had already helped the world turn the corner on the environmental issues," he said. "Once a majority agrees with you, its time to stop beating them over the head and sit down with them and try to figure out some solutions." Yet, the notion that the Amazon jungles are threatened remains embedded in the popular culture: The 1993 animated feature, "Ferngully: The Last Rainforest," takes the Amazon's mystical charm literally, showing magical rainforest fairies fighting for their lives against industrialist's chainsaws and bulldozers. National Geographic's "Rainforest: Heroes of the High Frontier" warns that "despite efforts to save it, the rainforest is being consumed at an unprecedented rate." "Amazonia: A Celebration of Life" shows playful jungle animals being rudely awakened to the sound of chainsaws. The 1992 Sean Connery feature "Medicine Man" shows Connery discovering the cure for cancer at his makeshift lab in the heart of a burning Amazon rainforest. He loses the cure when developers raze his facility in order to build a road. Environmental groups from Greenpeace to the Sierra Club to the World Wilderness Foundation to the Environmental Defense Fund to the Smithsonian Institution conduct outreach efforts in the name of the rainforest. Dozens of other groups with names like Rainforest Relief, Rainforest Action Network and Rainforest Foundation were created for the sole purpose of exploiting the issue. A tourist to Brazil who picks up a "Lonely Planet" travel book will read numerous pleas for help: "Unless things change ... Indians will die with their forests," it pleads. "Invaluable, irreplaceable Amazon may be lost forever." "Lonely Planet" has company on the bookshelf: "At the current rate of deforestation," Vice President Gore writes in "Earth in the Balance," "Virtually all of the world's tropical rainforests will be gone partway though the next century." The scientific evidence paints a much brighter picture of deforestation in the Amazon. Looking at the NASA Landsat satellite images of the deforestation rates in the Amazon rainforest, about 12.5 percent has been cleared. Of the 12.5 percent, one half to one third of that is fallow, or in the process of regeneration, meaning that at any given moment up to 94 percent

To get a good feel for what these operations are all about, let's begin by discussing bits. A bit is the sim- plest form of information because it can exhibit only one of two states. You can think of a bit as being either Yes or No, On or Off, True or False, 1 or 0. Although the subject of bits and logical operations is sometimes approached in an abstract mathematical manner, bits are very real. In the hardware of digital com- puters, such as the PC, virtually every in- terconnection is a "bit carrier." The wires, the connections between chips on the circuit boards, the connections within the chips themselves--all these connec- tions carry signals in the form of a voltage. The various integrated circuit chips on the board manipulate or process data in the form of bits. They receive signals from other chips and send signals out to other chips. Regardless of the complexity of these chips, they all contain transistors wired together into small fundamental "logic gates." These gates take two input signals (i.e., two bits) and create from them an output signal (another bit). One simple logic gate is called the OR gate. The input to this gate consists of two signals (call them A and B), each of which can be either a 0 or a 1. The output is a 1 if either A or B is 1. You can represent this by a formula: A OR B You can summarize what an OR gate does with a small table. Nativism's political relevance grew out of the increase of immigrants during the 20s and 30s and the anti-foreign writings that abounded during these decades. While pivoting between anti-foreign and anti-catholic appeals, nativism became both practical and ideological in nature: platforms for the movement ranged from extending the length naturalization to protecting the sacredness of the Protestant Republic. In New York city's 1844 elections, the nativist movement formed the American Republican Party, which allied with the Whigs and resulted in the defeat of the Democratic Party. This political advancement, although local and short lived, presented a glimpse of the national nativist power later found in the know- nothings. Clearly, early nineteenth-century nativism participated in significant political changes, and the goal of this paper is to summarize nativism between 1830 and 1845 while analyzing these major political developments. With its first edition appearing January 2, 1830, The Protestant represented one of the earliest publications of nativist literature. George Bourne edited the publication, and he conveyed his mission clearly: the goal of the paper centered around the denunciation of the Catholic faith. Bourne understood the belittling of the "popish" belief to be the only way in which to warn the Republic of the Catholic danger. In his book, The Protestant Crusade, Ray Billington includes a portion of a prospectus for The Protestant, in which Bourne stated, "The sole objects of this publication are to inculcate Gospel doctrines against Romish corruptions." Although a large portion of Protestant America held some anti-foreign tendencies, Bourne's blunt attack on Catholicism did not reach the moderate Protestant. Bourne resigned and the editor's position went to Reverend William Craig Brownlee The Protestant moved from degrading attacks on the Catholic faith to more of a theological discussion. Brownlee's disparaging tactics proved to be no more appealing to moderate Protestant than Bourne's, and The Protestant's shrinking list of subscribers forced ownership to a private group individuals. To avoid a connection with Bourne's and Brownlee's extreme attacks, the name of the paper changed in 1882 to The Reformation Advocate, but the paper still could not find a method to support a large audience. In 1883 the paper changed a third time, replacing the weekly publication with the monthly Protestant Magazine. Here, the magazine questioned theological issues of the Catholic faith, and avoided the "sensationalism which had characterized The Protestant." Finally, those who wished to promote the nativist cause through publication found a position that moderate-Protestant America found accepting. As the early nativist publication efforts became accepted, the need for a formal organization developed. The New York Protestant Association (formed in 1831) gave the cause a structured environment and allowed individuals with the same view to interact on a large scale. By early 1832, the popularity of the association drew many nativists to the formal meetings. With meetings being open to the public, Catholics also attended, and the mixing of both Catholics and nativists inevitably resulted in debate. Many times a Catholic in the audience would respond to a malicious or inaccurate statement made by a member of the association. In May of 1832, these potentially explosive conditions produced a riot at a New York Protestant Association meeting. Further, while addressing a Baltimore Baptist audience in 1834, a group of Catholics attacked a Baptist speaker. These early Catholic aggressionsalthough, possibly warranted due to the nativists' antagonismcaptured moderate America's attention. By 1833, a variety of mainstream papers followed these events, and some moderate Protestants viewed Catholics as a danger. Although Catholics occasionally reacted to the nativist movement with violence, nativists produced one of the greatest violent acts of the 1830s. On August 10, 1834 a mob of forty to fifty people gathered outside of the Ursulines Convent school and burned it to the ground. Although there is agreement as to the underlying causes, there is disagreement regarding the events directly leading up to the burning. Most authors agree that the stories surrounding the convent's problems with two nunsRebecca Reed and Elizabeth Harrisoffered a target for anti- Catholic hostility just waiting to manifest. In a few months, the Association spread to almost every ward within the city. The basic purpose of the Association was to fight the increasing influence of immigrants (especially the Irish) at the ballot box. Members of this organization were Protestants and most of the Irish were Roman Catholics. The City of Brotherly Love had seen religious rioting between Protestants and Catholics for several months. Irish Catholics living in the Third Ward of Philadelphia, Kensington, disrupted American Republican Association meetings in Kensington. Members of the Association were enraged that could not meet in Kensington because they felt it was their constitutional right to do so. In one attempt to meet in Kensington, shots were fired, and a 19-year-old, supporting the flag on the speakers platform to keep it from falling to the ground was killed. George Schiffler became a martyr for the Association and his picture appears on Native American ribbons. In retaliation, more than a quarter of a million dollars in property damage and violence against Catholics left the Protestants with blood on their hands also. By June, 1844, the Nativists had decided to display their numerical power and promote their ideas through a procession on the Fourth of July. There are many theories as why nativism develops at various times in a countrys history. Some have argued that fears of social displacement create animosity toward new immigrant groups. The large immigration of Irish Catholic immigrants was certainly looked upon as a threat by some Protestants. Two books greatly increased these fears. One was A Foreign Conspiracy Against the Liberties of the United States by Samuel F. B. Morse, the inventor of the telegraph. Another was A Plea for the West by Lyman Beecher. The conspiracy theory presented by these two men showed a special concern for the developing western United States. In his book, Morse stated that Frederick Schlegel of Austria had declared that monarchy and Catholicism were inseparable and that the republicanism of the United States was the enemy of both. Morse argued that the Leopold Association, which gave funds to dioceses in Cinncinati and throughout the U.S. was formed to win the west for Catholicism and monarchy through a massive immigration of Catholic Irish into the west. Because the Association was centered in Vienna, Austria, rather than Rome, many Protestants believed the Association was a conspiracy between the monarchs of Europe and Catholicism to destroy republicanism in the U.S. Beecher made a plea for building public schools in the West before Jesuit instruction and massive immigration would conquer the West and eventually the United States with monarchical ideas. Nativists saw themselves as restitutionists and longed for a Golden Age when pure democracy was untainted by Old World ideas. The Nativists declared their parade a Second Declaration of Indpendence. John Hancock Lee, a nativist author, describes Nativist banners used in the July 4, 1844 parade in his book, the Origin and Progress of the American Party in Politics. This book was written in 1855, just as the Nativists were to field their first national party, the American Party (also known as the Know Nothing Party). As American Political Ribbons and Ribbon Badges shows, there were also plenty of ribbons used in the July 4 parade. Here are a few of Lees descriptions of these Nativists banners: The banner of this delegation was borne in the carriage. On the top of it were the words The Bible the basis of education, and the safeguard of Liberty. Device, the figure of Liberty in a sitting position, with left arm resting on the American shield, horn of plenty at her feet, and the staff and cap of liberty behind her, an eagle flying in the middle ground, bearing aloft the Bible. Further to Mr. Jennings journalism on "The Greatest Story Ever Told" I am reminded that the report of Luke was a historical report and that this is a historically based faith. When Life-Gazette was in tabloid format in the late 80's and early 90's, one of its columnists was a retired Christian physician who impressed me greatly with his statements on the CREDIBILITY of this faith. Dr. Hugh Macphail (MD, 1948, U. Manitoba) was even a creationist. He said he thought there was literal evidence for creation, ie for some-thing coming out of no-nothing in the outer regions of space. In particular he said that he thought hydrogen could be created in space. I have to admit that I was incredulous until I read the book by scientist-astronaut Brian O'Leary titled "Miracle In The Void". Not only does O'Leary say that mass-energy can be created in the void but that he thinks the "zero point field" as he calls space, is conscious in and of itself. Once again I was incredulous until I read the web site of another scientist-astronaut, Edgar D. Mitchell, on quantum holograms as "nature's mind". If the "observer effect" as it is called in quantum physics manifests itself everywhere we have a scientific statement giving credence to omniscience, another central tenet in the teachings of Christ. Dr. Macphail pointed out that this faith we have is a "credible faith, not a credulous faith". It is not based on the tooth fairy (the latter kind of faith) but upon HISTORICAL EVIDENCE. IT STANDS OR FALLS ON HISTORICAL REPORTS LIKE THAT OF LUKE. So it is not a matter of "secular history" vs. "religious history". It is a matter of history which is valid vs. history which is invalid. I have never come across a single piece of evidence which would prove beyond reasonable doubt that any Biblical account of history or science or philosophy is invalid. On the other hand, many related pieces of evidence support the Biblical account of history which is, I remind you, the established history of Christendom (while histories to the contrary are revisionist). With only summary stories available for events millennia in the past it is easy to question the validity of the historical events reported. Mr. Jennings questions Joseph taking Mary to Bethlehem because it was not "standard practice" re Roman taxation. That question can be raised but it does not refute anything. Nor does the incredulity of many concerning the miracle of the resurrection. Michael is now for more than 27 years behinds bars in Alabama and he is innocent. Frankly the responsible men in Alabama will never agree that Michael is innocent. They will tell you that they dropped his original charges only for technical reasons. They will tell you that they are sure about Michael's guilt but that the Alabama Supreme Court unfortunately doesn't allow them to use Michael's confession longer as evidence. Well, the truth is that this confession was coerced and that there was never a physical evidence for Michael's guilt. More than that, today it is proved that the only physical evidence ever showed on court, a shotgun, can not be responsible for the found wounds of the victims. However, all the new proofs are not of further interest because Michael's original charges are already dropped. No further court will have a look on them except an civil suit. But Michael escaped three times and therefore the law of Alabama allows the continuing unjust against him. They will tell you that Michael self had told everyone in his first prison that he is a murderer. That is true but it is only the half story. Michael did it after nobody wanted to believe him that he is innocent and he did it to survive as 17 year old white boy in one of the worst prison of America. The case of Michael Rene Pardue is an example for that what was and what is wrong with the American system of justice. The responsible men of Alabama have a high interest to hide all their mistakes in this case and a not so interested US media allow them to go on with that. Florida and Texas were not little frontier fights. They were links in a strategic system that united all parts of the continent, a system that might even bring European intervention. If Andrew Jackson was not the person to think systematically about world strategy, Adams stood ready to remind him of the big picture. In May of 1836, Adams spoke to a bill for distributing rations to victims of the Creek War in the southeast. This welfare need, he said, was only one of the results of an aggressive foreign policy. The United States was in danger of precipitating a general conflict between an "Anglo-Saxon-American" north and a "Moorish-Spanish-Mexican-American" south, a war in which European powers might intervene on the side of the Hispanic south. A Mexican invader might mobilize Indians, or reach out to what Adams called "the native American negro, of African origin." It would be what Adams called in his diary "the Mexican, Indian, negro, and English war." Wars for Cuba and Puerto Rico could follow, and civil war within the United States. And would not the war powers of the national government extend to acting on slavery? He would vote for the rations bill, he pointed out in conclusion, for the precise reason that it would vindicate that power. In his diagnosis, the only U.S. society that could protect itself would be one economically and morally developed, able to free and mobilize the slave population into its own ranks. Officials in Mexico, such as secretary of war Tornel, picked up on Adams's speech, using it in their own analyses of the Texas war. Soon it appeared in Spanish translation, and in handy pamphlet form. But the problems that Adams diagnosed were problems on the Mexican side as well. Both national armies confronted strategic challenges beyond their resources at that time. This was just as true of the dilemmas that confronted Mexico in dealing with its north, as those that confronted the United States in dealing with its south and west. The longest-range project for overcoming those challenges, a project that overleaped even the visions of Edmund P. Gaines, came from Amos Kendall, a house intellectual in the Jackson administration, who worked with a cranky anti-foreign painter on a major step in what the late 20th century would call "globalization." Even as immediate military events, the conflicts in Texas and Florida formed a broad Map of Strategic Links across the middle of the continent. In 1835, the rival Mexican and Anglo societies faced together a zone of enemy peoples, from Florida through Texas, New Mexico, and California. These peoples had the capacity to act as armed communities. The U.S. Army was fighting them on their eastern flank, the Texans were fighting them on the center, while the Mexican Army and militia were fighting them in the west. If the various Anglo-American forces could not yet concentrate for any single operation, they were not much worse divided than were the Mexican units fighting separately out of Sonora and Chihuahua. The Failures of National Armies: (1) from Zacatecas to Texas To cope with military expenses, Mexican governments borrowed from abroad, and accepted economic interests from abroad. This included giving land grants in Texas to settlers who would hang on against the indios bárbaros. But Anglo lenders sent profits back to Britain, and Anglo settlers sent loyalty back to the United States. By 1835 the overwhelming majority of non-Indian Texans consisted of U.S. white migrants and their slaves. By 1836 Texans were rebelling for independence from Mexico. Technical advances slumbered through the Dark Ages, when the written word was almost witchcraft in its own right, and the mounted courier still the fastest thing on Earth. In the Renaissance, learning and experimentation produced a few advances, especially in the city-states of Italy, where the Papacy and its rivals raised diplomatic espionage and cryptography, the art of code making and breaking, into a an enduring if not always honored profession. But for many in the United States, it was also a decade of egregious police misconduct. Although US Attorney General Janet Reno admitted in a press conference in April, 1995, that "there is a problem" with excessive use of force by police, much remains to be done to combat this problem. The conduct of the police in the United States, and of the justice system in general, is attracting increasingly critical attention not only from the domestic population, but from the international community as well. Data on police brutality is hard to come by. Though the Violent Crime Control and Law Enforcement Act of 1994 charged the US Justice Department with collecting national statistics on complaints of police misconduct, the organization has failed to comply, according to Amnesty International. Human Rights Watch recently published the report "Shielded From Justice: Police Brutality and Accountability in the United States," sampling the conduct of 14 major city police departments between 1995 and 1998. The results are not so encouraging, and in fact many spokespeople from the analyzed police departments "resorted to name-calling and defensiveness" in response to the report, according to Human Rights Watch. This follows a pattern of cover-up and rationalization by police departments, the report indicates. "Police or public officials greet each new report of brutality with denials or explain that the act was an aberration," the report claims, "while the administrative and criminal systems that should deter these abuses by holding officers accountable instead virtually guarantee them impunity." Some accounts of police brutality were so sensational that even the media could not help but notice. An overview of the major accounts of police, and justice system, abuse, wrongful death, and travesty follows. This timeline does not mean demean or ignore any cases not here mentioned. Rather, its purpose is to provide a sampling of the major events that were picked up by the media throughout the decade that caused public skepticism to progress to its current levels (In the interest of continuity, one event from the year 2000 is also noted): o March, 1991: Rodney King is beaten with 56 baton strokes, is kicked in the head, torso, and groin, and is stunned with a Taser gun by at least 4 white officers after a high speed chase. The incident is captured on video. The Christopher Commission report quotes an officer saying "[H]e pissed us off, so I guess he needs an ambulance now" over his squad car radio after the beating. The State of California acquits the four white officers. o November, 1992: Undercover African-American officer Derwin Pannel is shot by three white police officers in New York City. Pannel was making an arrest in plain clothes but was thought to be assaulting someone. o June, 1993: 30 year-old African-American Archie Elliott is handcuffed and placed in custody in a police cruiser in Prince George County, Maryland. He is shot at 22 times while cuffed. Officers say he was resisting arrest. 14 bullets hit him, killing him. o August, 1994: Undercover officer Desmond Robinson is shot five times by white off-duty officer Peter Del Debbio in New York City. Robinson is African-American and is in plain clothes at the time. Del Debbio said he thought Robinson was involved in a crime since he was carrying a gun. o October, 1995: Jonny Gammage, cousin of pro football player Ray Seals, is killed by New Jersey police officer John Vojtas during a "routine" traffic stop. Gammage is ordered out of his car, when a police officer subdues him after suspecting the Jaguar Gammage is driving is stolen (the Jaguar was Gammage's). The officer crushes Gammage's trachea, killing him. Officer Vojtas is promoted to Sergeant and is acquitted of murder. o June, 1996: African-American Aswan Watson is shot 18 times while sitting unarmed in a stolen car in Brooklyn. Watson is killed. Officers are acquitted of charges in 1997. o July, 1996: 26 year-old African-American Nathaniel Levi Gaines, Jr., a Navy Gulf War veteran, is shot in the back by a New York City police officer. With a sweaty-lipped smirk and a nod, Texas Governor George W. Bush cleared the way for the state's killing of a young Black man. The legalized lynching of Sankofa, the 132nd in recent Texas history, was but the latest in a long line of state killings. All of these have but one objective: to propel Bush, the younger, into the White House. With serious questions about his guilt, and equally serious questions about the competency of his original, court-appointed trial counsel, the Graham (Sankofa) case posed serious questions about the entire Texas death machine. Sankofa's trial lawyer has the dubious distinction of having a subsection of Texas death row unofficially named for his: the "Mock Wing." The wing is so named for Harris County defense attorney, Ronald G. Mock, whose twelve clients were shuffled to the Texas death row. With the legalized lynching of Sankofa, seven of his clients have been killed by the state, and five now await death. Sankofa's trial took 2 days, and the lawyer (Mock) called no witnesses during the guilt phase of the trial. In a recent interview Mock told reporters, in a boast, that he flunked criminal law at Texas Southern University's Thurgood Marshall School of Law. He never called, nor interviewed, two eyewitnesses, that would've cleared Sankofa of the May 13th, 1981 killing of a 52-year old white man. One of his former colleagues, Attorney Chester L. Making a Killing: HMOs and the Threat to Your Health, by Jamie Court and Francis Smith (Common Courage Press, Monroe, ME, (www.makingakilling.org/?), paints a troubling tale of what has become of our health care system. Jamie Court and Francis Smith have written a searing, well-documented indictment of "corporate medicine" as practiced by HMOs. American medicine, the authors contend, has been taken over by the avarice of the corporate marketplace. "The doctor-patient relationship and its concomitant social values of trust and confidentiality have been eroded by the search for profits," the authors write. HMO doctors are frequently overruled on critical medical decisions by utilization reviewers in distant corporate headquarters. These reviewers are often little more than what the authors describe as "clerks with no medical license." Not only does the search for profits endanger patients (and the book documents some truly horrifying examples), it also results in a "colossal waste" of health care resources. The United States spends more, per capita, on health care and covers fewer people than any other Western nation in the world. Where does the money go? According to the authors, 20 to 30 percent goes to corporate overhead and profits. Profits-before-patients is easily translated into corporate-dominated medicine. Greed and focus on stocks, stock options, and quarterly earnings rapidly degrade health care services. The professionalism of physicians and nurses is undermined by the juggernaut of commercialism über alles. The critical relations of care and compassion between server and patient are replaced by categorical protocols imposed by corporate bureaucrats commanded by monetized minds at the top of the corporate hierarchy. The exercise of judgment, discretion, and mercy at the server-patient level is relentlessly eroded by the forces of mammon the giant HMOs, their masterminding corporate law firms, and their political allies who safeguard their immunities and privileges in the face of growing public and professional outrage. This was not the way it was supposed to turn out, at least in the minds of the pioneers of prepaid medicine. Commencing in the 1920s with Dr. Michael Shadid's mobilization of poor farmers around Elk City, Okla., to form the first cooperatively owned hospital in America, and then the Puget Sound and Kaiser Permanente health care plans, the ideal was to create quality health care with attention to preventive services within an affordable system of prepayment. In the 1970s the federal government began encouraging the formation of health maintenance organizations whose nonprofit status and prevention orientation were believed to be well suited to curbing the excesses of the fee-for-service system, with its incentives to sell too much to patients. As costs annually far exceeded the general inflation rate and health care absorbed a greater percentage of the GNP, the alternative of "managed care" emerged as a way to control costs. A dominant format also emerged the giant, for-profit HMOs and their entrepreneurial billionaire bosses securing large clusters of customers and seeking more and more mergers. A series of perverse economic incentives (gag rules, bonuses for not referring, and the like) were insinuated from top to bottom so as to seriously compromise the independent clinical judgments of physicians and other health professionals, often turning the pocketbook allegiance of the health care servers against the interests of their patients. The giant HMO and its deepening swamp of commercialism over service, of profiteering over professionalism, of denial or rationing of care where such care is critically needed, of depersonalization of intensely personal kinds of relationships, are spreading without sufficient disclosure, accountability, and structural responsibility, to the detriment of life and health. Workable alternatives are available. The underfunded Canadian universal health care system is still probably the best in the world, despite attempts by companies and corporate ideologues in North America to undermine and weaken it. For around 10 percent of its GNP, Canada provides health care for everyone from the cradle to the nursing home. Its administrative expenses are about 11¢ out of each dollar, compared with double that in the United States which this year may spend 14 percent of its GDP on health care, even as it leaves tens of millions of men, women, and children without coverage. Thus did this modern Solomon picture to six men and six women in a jury box, the sacrificial blood of innocent victims staining the altar of that wicked God of the Ammonites, as a warning of the Abomination that might be their verdict, should it be induced, mistakenly, by too great love for their native land-or grief for the blood of their own sons and daughters sacrificed on a less high altar, erected by one of those named in the conspiracy to be judged by that jury, I.G. Farben, of Frankfurt-am-Main. Having been instructed also that the Government of the United States was entitled to a just verdict, the jury retired and ten hours later brought in a verdict of NOT GUILTY for the two corporations and six individuals whose fate, for those ten hours, had been in their hands. I.G. Farben was not technically on trial in that case, having been accused merely as a co-conspirator, of conspiring with duPont and Rohm Haas of Philadelphia, with eight of their officers, as defendants; along with two other co-conspirators, Imperial Chemical Industries of England and Rohm. Haas of Darmstadt, Germany. As discussed heretofore in Chapter VI those named were accused of having entered into agreements to fix prices and restrain production and distribution of acrylic, or plastic, glass-like products, in violation of the Sherman Anti-Trust Law. One mystifying aspect of the trial was the dismissal of Counts 2 and 3 of the indictment on motion of Walter R. Hutchinson, Special Assistant to Attorney General Francis Biddle, who represented the Government. This left only Count 1 of the indictment at issue and confined the case to charges of violation of Section 1 of the Sherman Act, forbidding conspiracies in restraint of trade. Whereas Counts 2 and 3 alleged also violations of Section 2 of the Sherman Act which forbids monopoly or attempt to monopolize. (It might be noted here that no explanation has been forthcoming of this apparent free gift to the defendants of immunity without trial under the specific charges in Counts 2 and 3. However it is known that Mr. Hutchinson, who had just returned to the justice Department from army duty overseas, was ill, and in no condition to have tried this case.) The Court, in its charge to the jury made certain the omission was. understood and that: The second section, relating to monopoly, has been abandoned by the Government so that there remains for your consideration only the first count which is violation of Section 1 of the Sherman Act. The Court then made this astounding misstatement of the language and scope of Section I of the Sherman Act, as follows: Performance of an overt act to effectuate the object of the conspiracy is necessary to bring the combination within the ambit of the statute, because a conspiracy of itself, a combination of -itself, is not denounced by the statute unless there be something done to effectuate its purpose. This weird dictum being absolutely incorrect we may wonder how, and why the judge came to so inform the jury. The East India Company in North America Although its Charter only gave the East India Company a monopoly on trade to the east of the Cape of Good Hope, the sheer scale of its enterprise meant that the Company had a significant influence on the newly emerging American colonies. Indeed the American historian Henry Newton Stevens maintained that the Mayflower which participated in the third voyage of the Company was the same ship that later was to take the Pilgrim Fathers on their voyage from Plymouth. The Virginia Company In the early days of the seventeenth century the small circle of influential merchants in the City of London who formed the East India Company in 1600 had their fingers in a number of other trading pies. The Governor of the East India Company in its first decade, Sir Thomas Smyth, was also the first Governor of the Virginia Company founded in 1606, and the two Companies shared their headquarters in Smyth's house, along with that of the Levant Company. The Virginia Company was the first British colonial enterprise in North America, following on the naming of that state after the Virgin Queen, Elizabeth I. The Virginia Company founded the colonial port of Jamestown on Chesapeake Bay, now a Colonial Heritage site. Captains from Hudson to Kidd One of the key issues at the time of the foundation of the Company was the search for the "North West Passage" over the top of North America to the Indies, considered of vital interest because of the continued dominance of the sea routes east by the Spanish and Portugese. The Company financed expeditions in order to find the supposed passage, and on one such voyage the Captain, Henry Hudson, was cast ashore to die by his mutinous crew in the bay which now bears his name. Forced to share the sea-lanes on the more conventional route to China and the Spice Islands, the Company had little contact with America until it had successfully established its trade in India; then private traders or "interlopers" based in New England caused many headaches for the Company by joining in with the trade and, as the Company saw it, interfering with their monopoly. The situation was aggravated by the activities of American pirates on the trading lanes between India and the Middle East. Eventually the Company gave a contract to the newly-appointed Governor of New York to get rid of this menace. He found a well-armed ship and an experienced commander named Captain Kidd, who soon, far from suppressing piracy, became one of its most notorious practitioners until his capture and execution in 1701. The Yale brothers The second-generation American bothers, Elihu and Thomas Yale, forged notable careers for themselves in the Company's service. Elihu rose to become Governor of Madras, and from there in 1689 he sent Thomas on what was the Company's first direct trading mission to China, paving the way for the eventual opening up of that unknown country to the Company's traders. Although his brother was later disgraced, Elihu returned to America with the fortune that he had earned in India, donating part of it to his old school, which, in gratitude, renamed itself " Yale College" in 1718. The Union Jack and Stripes The story of the origin of the Stars and Stripes, the American flag, forms an essential part of every schoolchild's education in the United States, but it is not commonly known that the inspiration for Betsy Rose's gift to Washington was the flag of the East India Company, which consisted of a Union Jack and stripes. "We'll use all our persuasion and all our talent to bring together the U.S., Canadian and Mexican governments so that in five or 10 years, the border is totally open to the free movement of workers." The crowd in Bakersfield cheered. The candidate wasn't Democrat Al Gore or Republican George W. Bush. ¡Por favor! Even if they wanted an open border, suggesting one now would frighten too many conservative voters. The candidate certainly wasn't the Reform Party's Pat Buchanan. The arch-conservative wants a moratorium on immigration until he decides who's welcome in America and who's not. ¡No, gracias! The candidate was Vicente Fox, the man who has turned the race for the presidency of Mexico into a real contest against the party that has ruled for 71 consecutive years. When I first met Fox a few years ago, he was wearing his trademark cowboy boots and hat, like the ones he wore while stumping in California. But now, goods, capital and workers are flying over the borders and zipping by the Internet into the interior. That's the big picture. Here's a littler one, but it's still a doozy. THE United States is facing a shortage of skilled and unskilled labor for the next 20 years. Canada isn't so desperate, but it also faces labor shortages. America can't produce enough workers to keep the good times rolling. Here's why: The lowest unemployment rates in three decades -- 4.1 percent for the nation and lower in white-hot economies such as Silicon Valley's -- mean that every employable adult is working or likely to find a job soon. America is aging rapidly. By 2020, the group of workers age 20 to 64 will increase by only 15 percent. The over-65 group will double. Not one school in America, not even the lowliest, wants its children to become dishwashers, maids or janitors. The school principal who steers students toward grunt work, low wages and lousy benefits should be fired. Mexico, meanwhile, has what America and Canada need: a surplus of young workers willing to leave home for greater opportunities and earnings. More work visas for them could have been included in the North American Free Trade Agreement years ago. After all, goods, capital and labor are equal players in market economies. Where one goes the others follow. But NAFTA didn't include labor because the U.S. negotiators didn't think Congress would open the border to more Mexicans. They were right. THE United States and especially California were in an anti-immigrant mood that had more to do with the nature of American national identity and loyalty than with economics. That mood has softened remarkably. A Mexican presidential candidate just visited California and talked about an open border without starting a riot. The boy's reunion with his family in Havana was a great propaganda coup for the 72-year-old Cuban leader but he has been absent from the widespread celebrations. Three hundred thousand Cubans took to the streets of Manzanillo, a southern port, on Saturday to mark Elian's return and to protest against the American embargo against Cuba. However, they had to make do with a written statement from their president read out by one of his subordinates. In what should have been a moment of great national triumph, Castro has disappeared from view. Several afternoons a week during the seven months of Elian's stay in America, while the boy's Cuban and American families wrangled over custody, Castro attended a daily televised round-table discussion of the case. He has not been on the programme for more than a week. Nor was he at the airport when Elian and his family returned to Havana. All public statements have been delegated to members of his inner circle, including his brother Raul, the minister of the armed forces and Ricardo Alarcon, the president of the national assembly. One interpretation of Castro's absence is that he is trying to show America that he does not intend to use Elian Gonzalez as a political tool. But the rally in Manzanillo and other official statements which portray the return of Elian as victory for Cuba suggest otherwise. Others say that Castro's sudden and baffling disappearance reflects his natural modus operandi. By never doing what seems most expected of him, he has managed to maintain his mystique and power for more than 40 years. Like a shark under the water, he is almost more frightening when not visible. In his written statement read out at Manzanillo, Castro said: "Whoever is the next president of the United States should know that here is Cuba with its ideas, its example and rebelliousness of its people, that all aggression and all attempts to asphyxiate us or put us on our knees will be defeated." After the rally, Raul Castro said that Cubans must build on Elian's return to pressure America into ending its embargo. He said: "Now begins the second stage, that will also be triumphant." Responding to speculation about what might happen after the Cuban leader dies, he said: "I have read hundreds of articles about that famous transition. Who will come after Castro? The time has nearly come, where justice has been replaced with anarchy. Right now it is just political anarchy. Well let me say this. I am not the least bit scared of the times we live in. What goes around almost certainly comes around. That is why I always treat people the best I can under the circumstances. But at some point justice has to be administered. In our case, I highly doubt if this disbarment means anything to any of these people. Clinton will go on to live near Oxford England I am almost certain, until he gets bored of that. His wife is still a virtual problem that will not go away. Now let me tell you a secret about martial law. We really live under martial law, it is just not as bad as say Northern Ireland. The thing about martial law is that under such a circumstance it is actually military commanders that execute justice. In our case, the military does very little and enforcement of policies (illegal or not) comes from judges and the alphabet soups. That is because for now things can still be controled by this imposter regime of a police state. When things break down as they have done in Seattle and Washington, D.C. and Los Angeles, etc. eforcement will come through military tactics or what most people see as martial law. Now this is the secret. Under such a circumstance victory does not go to who has the law on their side, but who can muster a win on the battle field. Those who rule in a military court one day (the field commanders), may surrender the next. If and when any of these so called commanders go against me and my own, they will surrender. I will drive a bloody stake through their heart if they don't. Those who were unjust (like all the politicians and the king's men) will answer to new commanders and new judges in new courts of law. Those who committed treason will be hanged. The secret service will not help these polticians any more than the secret service helped the Shah of Iran, or they too will be lined up and executed. I don't care how many agents they bring on and under what types of computers they are trained. What I am writing is an open letter to all people. I know of many honorable people who do not need the help of secret police for their very survival. Only do American presidents of the caliber of Clinton and Bush, etc. etc. need constant body guards as do the elite who sit in secret meetings in the Bilderberg and Trilatteral commission. They need their body guards and others to protect them from the citizenry while they work on their secret plans in dark places. However, one need only review the history of 1978-9 to see exactlly what I mean about the tides of politics turning badly on the status quo as in the Iranian example, it was not a pretty sight. So choose sides wisely. Some of us are not as nice as our otherwise gracious personalities would suggest. That goes for anyone and everyone who has anything to do with politics as usual. The police, the military, the judges, the mayors, the agencies, etc. etc. etc.. tread lightly in your work. That would have been good advice for the German S.S... some of us take very good notes. And if you think we will be easily beaten you are deadly wrong. So while I might fear for my own life, and that of people I know, just remember one thing. If you are on the opposite side of the fence YOU DAMN WELL BE BETTER DOING THE SAME! Let's hope that the Arkansas pannel acutally gets somewhere in their duty of bringing justice to a tattered legal system. But let's not hope to much that anything at all will come of it. Only when we bring the debate into the light of day and have true representative democracy under the rules of law as provided for in a responsible Republic can we have peace. As long as our children are corrupted under an impoverished education system, our politicians bought and paid for by corporations and drug dealers, our laws based on fraud and manipulation with no regard for constitutional principles, then we can not have peace. That is the bottom line. So don't cry, when people get hurt. Since we are already in a military court system under the guise of freedom, then let's bring on the military courts. I am all for it. Goussinsky: My arrest was a slap at Clinton By Elli Wohlgelernter MOSCOW (June 30) - The arrest of media tycoon Vladimir Goussinsky was intended to send a message from Russian President Vladimir Putin to US President Bill Clinton Goussinsky said in an exclusive interview here with The Jerusalem Post. The arrest came after Clinton appeared on Goussinsky's radio station for an hour on his visit here earlier this month "People in the administration told the chief editor of the radio station unofficially that it was a slap in the face to Clinton, a direct message," Goussinsky said. "They said they were unhappy that Clinton spent more time on the air on the radio station than he had in the press conference with Putin." Goussinsky, an outspoken critic of the political policies of Putin, was arrested June 13 on charges of embezzlement and held in jail for three nights. He said that while he does not fear for his life, he recognizes that he could be arrested again at any time, and is prepared. "It's impossible to understand the logic in the steps taken by an idiot - I don't mean Putin, I mean the system as it functions," said Goussinsky, sitting in his second-floor office at his Media-Most headquarters. "So I cannot give any prognosis for steps taken by a system which is so idiotic. "I think that Putin - I used to know him pretty well eight months ago - is not a stupid man at all, but I am afraid that he has become a hostage of his own past and the system to which he belonged." Goussinsky, who admitted that he keeps a packed bag ready in his car with overnight essentials in case he is arrested again, said the enmity between Putin and himself is more than just political. "It's a personal vendetta against me," he said. The media baron, who is also president of the Russian Jewish Congress, said the Russian authorities are attempting to manage the Jewish community, and that the formation of the Federation of Jewish Communities, a Habad-affiliated rival umbrella organization, was intended to divide the Jewish community. "It's a political decision in the Kremlin," Goussinsky said. "I'm sure of this. And regrettably, I had discussions with Rabbi [Berel] Lazar [chief rabbi of the federation], when the forming of the federation was about to take place. I told them, 'Please, don't let them use you.' They said, 'We realize that, we have no intention of being used.' But I believe that they are being used. Not because they want to be. Maybe they don't really realize they are. The people who are behind the federation, who are backing it, they have a clear understanding of what they are doing and what their purposes are. I don't want to name names." But Goussinsky said he didn't see any coincidence that Lazar was elected chief rabbi by the federation five hours before his arrest. "I don't think there is any connection. What I think is that the Russian authorities, when making the decision to arrest me, thought that because a leader was appointed to represent the Jewish people, international Jewish organizations' reaction to my arrest would be minimal." Agudas Chassidei Chabad-Lubavitch, the umbrella organization for the worldwide Chabad-Lubavitch movement and its highest-level policy maker, issued a statement yesterday congratulating Lazar "upon his election by Russia's Jewish communities to the post of chief rabbi of Russia." Lazar is not recognized as the chief rabbi by the Russian Jewish Congress and the Conference of European Rabbis, who support long-time serving Adolf Shayevich as chief rabbi. Cloned sheeps, pigs, or cows that produce proteins and organs for medicine are one giant step closer to reality. For the first time, experts have cloned "knock-in" sheep in which foreign genes were placed into specific places in the chromosomes, researchers report in the 29 June issue of Nature. Dolly the sheep was the first big success of a technique called cloning by nuclear transfer. In it, DNA from one cell is transferred into an emptied egg cell lacking its own genetic material. The egg then develops via the commands of the transplanted DNA. In late 1997, researchers first adapted cloning technology to add foreign genes to the transplanted DNA in the host egg cell. But because the scientists had no control over exactly where the extra gene went, they couldn't control whether the gene was ever used. To guarantee high production of a particular protein--essential for a commercially viable clone--researchers need to target the gene to a specific spot in the genome. But until now, gene targeting had only worked in mice and, in one experiment, in human connective tissue cells. The problem, realized Alexander Kind and his colleagues at PPL Therapeutics in Edinburgh, Scotland, was finding a way to insert the gene before the donor cells got too old. Most cells can divide only a limited number of times in culture, and gene targeting requires several rounds of cell division. When Kind improved the efficiency of each step and cut down on the number of necessary cell divisions, his team managed to produce two sheep, Cupid and Diana. The sheep have marker genes--and one has a gene for a therapeutic protein--"knocked in" to specific places along their chromosomes. This breakthrough is "the most earthshaking news of the year," says Robert Wall with the U.S. Department of Agriculture in Beltsville, Maryland. Kind's team has pulled off the same feat in cow and pig cells and says it plans to make knock-in pigs that carry a protein that will help the human immune system accept pig organs as transplants.
