Means as told to May Dixon Thacker Guild Publishing Corporation (1930) 6-17-3 Warren Harding was elected president in 1920, on the basis of a promise of strong support for Prohibition, but an equal promise not to enforce it, especially in the White House. He kept his promise, so far as it applied to the White House, but not otherwise, and an enforcement system went into effect, staffed by federal agents. Gaston Means was an agent and investigator for the Justice Department's Bureau of Investigation (the forerunner of the FBI). Means made $83 a week at his government job, but he made far more as a member of a political gang (the members of which I will sometimes call the conspirators). The gang was led by Harry M. Daugherty, the Attorney General. The gang installed Means in a palatial house, situated at 903 16th Street, N.W., in Washington, D.C. She asked Means to investigate the rumor and prove that the story wasn't true. Means, who fancied himself a great investigator, accepted the assignment. She promised to pay him. Alcohol Prohibition was a great source of profit to the conspirators who formed the gang. For a price, government officials could provide papers which allowed people to withdraw quantities of whiskey and gin from bonded warehouses. Also, for a price, bootleggers could purchase protection from federal agents who might otherwise interfere with their business affairs. Means, himself, frequently travelled to New York to handle these transactions. There, he would rent two adjoining rooms in a first class hotel, e.g., the Vanderbilt. Each bootlegger seeking protection for his business activities, whether they be in Brooklyn, Manhattan, the Bronx, or wherever, would be instructed to come to one of the rooms at an odd time, e.g., 11:42 AM, 2:26 PM, etc., and to bring with him the required sum of money. In the room there would be a large glass jar, with a large sum of cash, e.g., $10,000 or $50,000 already deposited therein (so as to reassure the client that he was not alone; that others were also purchasing protective services). Each bootlegger would then deposit the required sum of money in bills, while Means watched through a peephole in the adjacent room to make sure that the money already in the bowl was not removed, and that the required payment was made. Not once was he short-changed, such was the honesty of his clients. In this manner and over time, Means brought in $7,000,000 from the New York operations, and similar large sums from Detroit, Chicago, etc. While all this was going on, Means' investigation of Nan Britton proceeded. Through nefarious means, he managed to gain admittance to the apartment in Chicago where Britton was staying, and to actually steal letters which Harding had written to Britton, confirming his affair with her. Means also found numerous gifts which Harding had made to Britton s son, e.g., a ring, a baby carriage, etc. Thus, the investigation did not serve its intended purpose: it confirmed, rather than disproved the rumors. It also led to the suspicion, in Means' mind, that the conspirators were using the affair to blackmail the President into signing executive orders, transferring certain government oil leases from the Navy Department to the Secretary of Interior,

No, it is _excessive_ profits -- those that rob from workers most of the value of the goods and services they produce -- that are evil. what he ignores is that the much maligned American capitalist economy has created more wealth A great deal of the wealth created by the American capitalist economy has been accomplished by taking control of third world nations (see the references below), robbing their natural resources, installing murderous dictatorial (death-squad) governments, and then using their populations as slave labor at wages of pennies per hour to grow and manufacture products for American corporations. This practice is still going on. and distributed it more evenly than any other economic system in the history of mankind. No socialist economy anywhere, ever has created the broad distribution of wealth the US economy has... period. Wrong. New treatments Police found her three days later, muttering to herself and wandering topless along the median strip of a busy highway. Her face was badly beaten and her son was gone. Fernandez is just one of hundreds of victims every month who, according to Colombian hospitals, are temporarily turned into zombies by a home-grown drug called scopolamine which has been embraced by thieves and rapists. "When I woke up in the hospital, I asked for my baby and nobody said anything. They just looked at me," Fernandez said, weeping. Police believe her son Diego was taken by a gang that traffics in infants. Colorless, odorless and tasteless, scopolamine is slipped into drinks and sprinkled onto food. Victims become so docile that they have been known to help thieves rob their homes and empty their bank accounts. Women have been drugged repeatedly over days and gang-raped or rented out as prostitutes. In the case of Fernandez, the mother of three was rendered submissive enough to surrender her youngest child. Most troubling for police is the way the drug acts on the brain. Since scopolamine completely blocks the formation of memories, unlike most date-rape drugs used in the United States and elsewhere, it is usually impossible for victims to ever identify their aggressors. "When a patient (of U.S. date-rape drugs) is under hypnosis, he or she usually recalls what happened. But with scopolamine, this isn't possible because the memory was never recorded," said Dr. Camilo Uribe, the world's leading expert on the drug. Scopolamine has a long, dark history in Colombia dating back to before the Spanish conquest. Legend has it that Colombian Indian tribes used the drug to bury alive the wives and slaves of fallen chiefs, so that they would quietly accompany their masters into the afterworld. Nazi "angel of death" Joseph Mengele experimented on scopolamine as an interrogation drug. And scopolamine's sedative and amnesia-producing qualities were used by mothers in the early 20th century to help them through childbirth. Finding the drug in Colombia these days is not hard. The tree which naturally produces scopolamine grows wild around the capital and is so famous in the countryside that mothers warn their children not to fall asleep below its yellow and white flowers. The tree is popularly known as the "borrachero," or "get-you-drunk," and the pollen alone is said to conjure up strange dreams. "We probably should put some sort of fence up," jokes biologist Gustavo Morales at Bogota's botanical gardens, eyeing children playing with borrachero seeds everywhere. "If you ate a few of those, it would kill you." Although scopolamine can be easily extracted from the seeds, experienced criminals hardly ever bother with them, police say. Pure, cheap scopolamine is brought across the border from neighboring Ecuador, where the borrachero tree is harvested for medical purposes, Uribe said. The alkaloid is used legally in medicines across the world to treat everything from motion sickness to the tremors of Parkinson's disease (news - web sites). The use of scopolamine by criminals appears to be confined to Colombia, at least for now, and it's not clear why the drug is such a rampant problem in Colombia. Gordon is the senior Democrat on the House Subcommittee on Space and Aeronautics. The legislator introduced the bill on June 12, a resolution crafted to assure that future human space flight accident investigations are truly independent. Smell test The lawmaker has been less than pleased with the internal intricacies of the Columbia Accident Investigation Board (CAIB). Gordon warned NASA earlier this year that the CAIB charter "just doesn't pass the smell test." Retired Admiral Hal Gehman chairs the 13-person CAIB, now based in Washington, D.C. and busily wrapping up its inquiry into the loss of space shuttle Columbia and crew on February 1. Among the board members is Scott Hubbard, Director of the NASA Ames Research Center. Board support includes ex-officio member Michael Bloomfield, NASA Chief Astronaut Instructor, as well as Theron Bradley, Jr., NASA's Chief Engineer. In the early stages of the accident investigation, the NASA administrator, Sean O'Keefe, revised the Gehman board's charter three times before he finally gave the board a measure of independence, Gordon noted. Even then, the board retains one NASA official and relies on NASA staff, which could undermine the credibility of its final report, the Congressman said. Modeled after Challenger commission Gordon stressed that his bill "is a lesson-learned bill and not a reflection on Admiral Gehman's handling of the Columbia investigation." "My purpose for crafting this bill is to make sure future investigations are free from any perception that the agency is hiding something," Gordon explained. "I want the public to have complete trust and support for our space program. Anything less is unacceptable." "The shame is all the NASA administrator had to do to get it right the first time was follow the successful model of the presidential commission that investigated the 1986 Challenger accident," Gordon said in a statement issued today. "I still don't understand why NASA believes it can adequately investigate itself and produce a report the public will accept." Gordon would have preferred an independent commission, appointed by the President, one that was free of any NASA personnel when investigating a major tragedy at the space agency. Having gone thru what might be called onion research, attempting to lift one layer after another of opinion and facts to understand what is going on, just out of persistent curiousity, I am no more a fan of the organized right than I am of the organized left, particularly seeing the right as the provision made for dissidents which Beatrice Webb said was necessary. You are right when you say the media promoted establishment left and right organizations promote ideas that are devisive. Followers on the right are sidetracked when they attempt to learn what is causing the changes, and followers on the left tend to respond to emotional messages promoting the cultural changes taking place. On the right those who look for information are easily funneled to antisemitic sources who promise to give them the real truth that they can't get anywhere else. They don't even realize how they have been funneled, thinking that those who present them with any new information are to be trusted. That seems to be happening on the left now also. Those on the left over these past years were provided with so much emotionally laden factual support that they felt they need look no further as they supported the cause of their choice.
