Veterans For Peace Newsletter, Fal 2004
http://www.veteransforpeace.org/news/Newsletter-Fall2004-web.pdf

He trolled for teenagers in North Carolina high
schools, barked orders at recruits in boot camp, and
pulled charred civilian corpses out of cars in Iraq.
Now Jimmy Massey is making good on his promise to tell
the whole world what he learned as a Marine. For the
first ten years, Massey loved being in the USMC.

With a quick mind and an easy manner he and his
superiors knew he'd make a great recruiter. And by the
luck of the draw, he was assigned to the area around
Asheville, NC, not far from where he grew up.

It was an advantage being a recruiter in this area. I
understand the mentality of mountain people. When we'd
talk about topics like the economy and industry around
here, I knew what people were talking about. And too,
people here usually don't open up to strangers.

Contrary to what some believe, Marine Corps recruiters
don't get paid commissions for going over quota, the 32
year-old former Staff Sergeant explained. My monthly
quota was three in the summer and two in the winter.
You could get five one month, but still go from hero to
zero next month when you started over again.
Recruiters do get Special Duty Assignment pay an extra
$475 a month, when I was in, he said, to offset the
higher cost of living in the civilian economy. An E-5
recruiter would make about $1500 every two weeks
including SDA pay. But being a recruiter is expensive.

There's extra costs, like taking a guy to Hooters for
some wings. The government gives me a credit card but
it's in my name, and the bill comes to me. I have to
pay it and then get reimbursed. You have to have a
nice car, you can't go rolling down the street in some
old family wagon. You can't be talkin' to a kid about
financial stability and drivin' an old Ford Ranger.

Massey drove a Mustang, and Army recruiters he knew
drove decked-out Expeditions with 20-inch rims. And
not just a fat ride, he added, You have to have a
little 'bling' (gold, jewelry, etc.) on you...that kind
of thing. I made sure I always dressed nice when I was
off duty. You gotta play the part. Young kids are
really materialistic minded.

Often the biggest enticement a recruiter can offer
young men and women trying to escape poverty is the
promise of job training. Conversely, not getting the
job a recruiter guarantees can be a source of real
discontent among the troops. The Marine Corps can
guarantee you a job all day long, Massey said, but
that doesn't mean you're going to actually get it.
There's a whole network within the community to enable
recruiters to make their quotas, the sheriff's
department, police department, schools...all the way up
to the local congressional office.

A recruiter is like a private eye, Massey said. They
know everything about the kids they're recruiting. For
example, he learned the names of virtually every
graduating high school senior in his seven-county
district-about 1,000 youngsters annually in that
largely rural area.

And high school students weren't the only people he got
to know well. We knew the names of the District
Attorneys in every county, and went to them to get
certain things [charges] reduced or dismissed on kids
we were recruiting.

Massey explained the Marines' Systematic Recruiting
method that includes use of a working file of
Prospective Applicant Cards on which information is
routinely entered. I'd put all the information down
that I knew...maybe Johnny Smith had some problems
with the law. That's when I'd go to the D.A. and ask if
Johnny was salvageable. If he was, I'd tell the D.A.,
'well I talked with Johnny and he's thinking of going
into the Marine Corps.' More likely than not the
response would be, 'Oh yeah?

A note of thanks to the adversaries of the disinformer John Birch Society:

Many thanks to the adversaries of the John Birch Society.
It is an axiom in politics,
that the most important consideration,
in dealing with attackers,
is that you make sure that they spell your name correctly.
The adversaries of the John Birch Society
can only have a small amount of success;
which depends entirely on their hope that they will be the only source of
information.
The curiousity that these attackers create,
will cause the most intelligent people to investigate,
and then learn the truth.
Agents of totalitarianism generally over estimate their own importance,
by assuming that we will waste our time,
in dealing with their foolishness.
There is nothing,
that any intelligent person wants to know
about The John Birch Society,
that he will not learn,
by consulting the web pages below.
Anyone; who honestly does want first hand information
about the John Birch Society will do so,
and will not be distracted be disinformers.
It is VERY simple.
Those who spend their time fighting tyranny, are patriots.

Those who spend their time fighting patriots are working for the advancing
of tyranny.

The internet can be the most powerful tool that we have,
or it can be the place where we waste our time.
THE KEY DIFFERENCE IS WHETHER,
OR NOT YOUR EFFORTS LEAD PEOPLE TO AN ACTION AGENDA.

The New American Magazine is available at:
www.thenewamerican.com

If you learn to use the search engine,
http://www.thenewamerican.com/website/search.htm
and the subject index,
http://www.thenewamerican.com/focus/index.htm
then you will have better information.
then you will be able to provide links,
which will increase the traffic at The New American web site,
and have the potential of actually leading to concerted action.

The John Birch Society has a national network of chapters
The John Birch Society has a fully paid field staff.
The John Birch Society publishes a MONTHLY bulletin FILLED WITH action items
for these chapters to follow.
The John Birch Society has system of summer youth camps.
The John Birch Society has Western Islands book publishing company;
which regularly produces new books, by scores of authors,
and brings back old books; which were no longer available.
The John Birch Society produces hundreds of videos, billboards, bumper
stickers, buttons, and audios.
The John Birch Society has a national network of retail bookstores to
distribute those books, and other materials.
The John Birch Society inspires hundreds of people to enter gun shows
and fair booths all over the country.
The John Birch Society has a speakers bureau,
and finds audiences for these speakers.
The John Birch Society does all important visits to large media brokers like
CNN and talk radio.
The John Birch Society has ad hoc committees like TRIM, and publishes and
distributes TRIM bulletins, showing voting records of congressmen and makes
these available online at:
www.trimonline.org

Imagine this:
1. You have a plumbing emergency,
that is so serious that you call a radio talk show,
and ask for a plumber to come at once.
2. Hundreds of plumbers show up,
but only one has the tools to do the job.
WHO WOULD YOU HIRE

5% of the people make things happen.
15% of the people watch things happen.
80% of the people never know what happened.

If you are in this group,
we know that you are not one of those 80% of the people,
who never know what happened.
At the very LEAST you are watching things happen.

The question is whether you want to be one of the
15% of the people who watch things happen.
OR one of the
5% of the people who MAKE things happen.

One of the biggest differences between the John Birch Society,
and almost every other organization,
that you may have known,
is that we have AN ACTION AGENDA.
Many people are surprised to find out that
there is actually something to DO ABOUT all of these problems.
It is NOT our goal to make you into the most knowledgeable patriot
in the entire concentration camp.

We want to live the rest of our lives in peace and freedom.
To do that, we need to TAKE ACTION.
We also need a lot MORE PEOPLE,
who will TAKE ACTION.

If you are not yet a part of the action agenda,
it is time to join.

[CTRL] George W. Bush and the Mandate of Heaven - What the final debate revealed

2004-10-14 Thread Bill Shannon
-Caveat Lector-

http://antiwar.com/justin/

October 14, 2004

George W. Bush and the Mandate of Heaven What the final debate revealed

by Justin Raimondo

While the third and last presidential debate wasn't supposed to be about foreign policy, it is the overriding issue in this election – and impossible to separate from supposedly "domestic" issues, such as taxes and homeland security. Wars, after all, cost money: and, these days, they also incur risks on the home front. Kerry utilized these connections to get in a zinger when the moderator, Bob Schieffer, brought up the immigration issue: Bush winced as Kerry opined that 4,000 illegals a day are coming over our southern border, and cited – in the follow-up – recent cases of Middle Easterners getting across. Maybe he meant this. Or possibly this.
Ouch.
Another Kerry zinger: when the subject of "assault weapons" came up, Kerry said that the terrorists can get them in America, and furthermore claimed that Osama bin Laden's "handbook" instructs terrorists in how to do this once they get here. While this Al Qaeda Handbook is a complete fabrication – one that seems as though it might be a figment of the Telegraph's imagination – it sure was an effective ploy. Especially since the President never answered him.
Note also that Kerry kept digging away at a sore spot in this administration's record, the disastrous "outsourcing" of the task of getting bin Laden to Afghan warlords, and the diversion of resources into Iraq when the real enemy was allowed to get away. We raised a similar point here in this space early on, and, as I pointed out in a previous column, the Kerry talking point about our fatal dependence on Afghan surrogates was lifted almost word for word from Michael Scheuer's Imperial Hubris: Why the West is Losing the War on Terror.
As I have noted before, however, Kerry appropriates the antiwar narrative and then draws an entirely counterintuitive conclusion. If it was "the wrong war at the wrong place at the wrong time," as he puts it, then why pledge to continue a military occupation he believes ought never to have been launched in the first place?
One particularly scary incident, however, underscored the great danger poised by George W. Bush's reelection, and that was the President's answer to a question on the importance religion plays in his policy decisions. After talking briefly about his own personal commitment to religious belief, he segued rather smoothly into foreign policy. The only time GWB seemed passionate, fully engaged, and authentic, is when he talked about the intensity of his belief and its relation to his foreign policy of relentless aggression. "I believe," he averred with messianic fervor, that
"God wants everybody to be free. And that's a part of my foreign policy."
Onward Christian soldiers, we're gonna liberate the world!
Pointing to the Afghan election –turned into a fiasco by credible allegations of fraud – he said:
"I believe that the freedom there is a gift from the Almighty. And I can't tell you how encouraged I am to see freedom on the march."
Something's on the march, alright, but it isn't freedom: it's fanaticism fueled by a dangerous theology, and a mortal threat to the peace of the world. Such rhetoric is meant to fire up his core constituency – snake-handling holy-rollin' Bible Belters and neocons alike – who see the American State as the instrument of God's Will on earth. So let's rain bombs down on Fallujah – and maybe Teheran, as well – because George W. Bush's reelection will represent the mandate of Heaven.
The low point of this debate will be mainly remembered as Kerry's inexplicable raising of Mary Cheney's lesbianism, but for me it was Bush's response to his opponent's citing of the President's statement that he didn't care all that much about finding and catching Osama bin Laden. The President pulled a face, and said, with genuine conviction,
"Gosh, I just don't think I ever said I'm not worried about Osama bin Laden. It's kind of one of those exaggerations."
Gosh golly gee willikers, to all appearances he quite sincerely believed he never said it, even though he uttered the words on a memorable occasion: at one of only three extended press conferences of his presidency, held in March 2003. Roll that tape….
"QUESTION: 'Mr. President, in your speeches now you rarely talk or mention Osama bin Laden. Why is that? Also, can you tell the American people if you have any more information, if you know if he is dead or alive? Final part – deep in your heart, don't you truly believe that until you find out if he is dead or alive, you won't really eliminate the threat of – '
"THE PRESIDENT: 'Deep in my heart I know the man is on the run, if he's alive at all. Who knows if he's hiding in some cave or not; we haven't heard from him in a long time. And the idea of focusing on one person is – really indicates to me people don't understand the scope of the mission.'"

John OSullivan brilliantly points out difference between being civilized
and over-civilized, and the dangers to peace and security the latter
encourages.

John O' Sullivan offers a childish argument. Their is no rational concept
called overcivilized and he offers no logical argument. Rather this is a
silly partisan rant. Anyone who considers either the DemiKans or the
RepuliKrats or their self serving agenda as 'civilized' is either a liar or
a fool.

Rather then addressing the issue of being 'civilized' we should be
discussing the issue of common sense. It is foolhardy to ignore human
nature. Whenever government is granted unlimited power over its citizens bad
things will result as we are witnessesing on a daily basis.

Only morons promote waging special interest war and dressing it up as a
clash of civilizations in order to sell it to the ignorant.

Nothing new here - has been done by self serving leaders throughout human
history.

Chechen terrorists probed
By Bill Gertz
THE WASHINGTON TIMES
Published October 13, 2004

U.S. security officials are investigating a recent intelligence report that
a group of 25 Chechen terrorists illegally entered the United States from
Mexico in July.
The Chechen group is suspected of having links to Islamist terrorists
seeking to separate the southern enclave of Chechnya from Russia, according
to officials familiar with intelligence reports.
Members of the group, said to be wearing backpacks, secretly traveled to
northern Mexico and crossed into a mountainous part of Arizona that is
difficult for U.S. border security agents to monitor, said officials
speaking on the condition of anonymity.
The intelligence report was supplied to the U.S. government in late
August or early September and was based on information from an intelligence
source that has been proved reliable in other instances, one official said.
A second U.S. official said the report is being investigated, but said
it could not be determined whether the group of Chechens actually entered
the country, as the intelligence source reported.
We don't know whether or not that report is true, this official said.
A spokesman for U.S. Customs and Border Protection confirmed that the
intelligence report was provided by another government agency, but said
Border Patrol agents were unable to verify its accuracy.
It could not be learned whether the reported infiltration is related to
the recent Education Department warning to school officials to examine
security in the aftermath of the attack last month by pro-Chechnya Muslim
terrorists on a school in Russia, in which more than 300 people were killed
and some 700 wounded.
In the Russian attack, heavily armed Islamists took over and wired with
explosives the school building in Beslan, North Ossetia. It is believed that
an accidental explosion set off a battle between Russian security personnel
and the terrorists, who set off several explosions and shot schoolchildren
and teachers as they tried to escape.
U.S. officials believe the Beslan terrorists included some al
Qaeda-linked foreign terrorists.
The Education Department letter said that school officials should
examine protective measure guidance for helping to prevent and respond to
a similar terrorist attack, were it to occur in the United States.
The notice said the FBI and the Department of Homeland Security are
currently unaware of any specific, credible information indicating a
terrorist threat to public and private schools, universities or colleges in
the United States.
The letter stated that indicators of terrorist surveillance before an
attack include interest in site plans for schools, bus routes and attendance
lists from persons who don't normally request such information.
Authorities also were advised to remain alert for static surveillance
by people who may be disguised as panhandlers, shoeshiners, newspaper or
flower vendors, or street sweepers who seem out of place in a particular
area.
Other indicators of terrorist surveillance can include spying on school
security drills, people staring at employees or vehicles in parking areas,
and surveillance by pedestrians.
Fears of an attack on American schools also were raised by the recent
discovery in Iraq of a computer disk containing data showing the layout of
six schools in the United States, including districts in California,
Florida, Georgia, Michigan, New Jersey and Oregon.
Officials believed the disk may have been part of a terrorist plot.
However, FBI officials said on Friday that there did not appear to be a
terrorist threat connected to the computer disk.
The Iraqi who had the disk, a member of Saddam Hussein's Ba'ath Party,
apparently was collecting information from the Internet sites of American
schools that would be useful for emergency planning for Iraqi schools, U.S.
officials said.
U.S. security officials have been concerned in recent months that al
Qaeda or other terrorists are planning to enter the United States from
Mexico.
Intelligence officials said a suspected al Qaeda leader who has been in
the United States was spotted recently in Mexico. Officials believe Adnan
Shukrijumah, whom the FBI wants for questioning, met with alien smugglers in
Mexico and Honduras and was seeking ways to bring al Qaeda members into the
United States. Shukrijumah was seen in August in the Sonora province of
northern Mexico, officials said.
Since October 2003, authorities have arrested five Arabs attempting to
cross illegally into the United States from Mexico.
In July, officials dismissed as untrue an Internet report that said a
group of Middle Eastern men were recently caught trying to cross the border
from Mexico.
The report apparently was based on a group of Oaxacan tribesmen who were
stopped as they tried to cross the border in Arizona. The

 Peace Freaks Praise
 The War Party
 by Chuck Zlatkin
http://www.rightiswrong.com/zlatkinletter.phpI watched the John Kerry For President concert on Sundance Monday night, while listening to it on WBAI radio. It was shown live from the MCI Center in D.C. It was a great concert. I loved seeing John Fogarty play with Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band. Dave Matthews, John Mellenkamp, Bonnie Raitt, the Dixie Chicks with James Taylor, REM, what a great show it was. And as much as I loved it all, I was saddened by its message, because I think its dead wrong. I wish I could just talk about the music, but this program was designed to make me vote for John Kerry. I mean how great was it to see Bruce Springsteen start the night playing an acoustic 12-string version of the National Anthem? But it couldn't deter me from seeing that John Kerry is pro-war, and therefore I can’t support him for president. I know the performers are anti-war. They are opposed to the policies of the Bush Administration. They are doing what they think is right, but they are wrong, and deep in their hearts they know they are kidding themselves. They are wishing and hoping that John Kerry can be reached, that once in office he might be convinced to be the compassionate liberal. But history teaches us that, when it comes to the presidency, whether it be liberal or conservative, there is very little room for compassion when the United States has decided that it is time for war.Five hours of great music and passion could not cloud the issue for me. I'm afraid that Bruce and his friends are truly kidding themselves. When it mattered most, John Kerry voted in favor of this war. When it mattered most John Kerry voted in f
avor of the Patriot Act. When it mattered most John Kerry voted in favor of NAFTA and GATT. And when it matters most now John Kerry promises that he will be out of Iraq in four years, that he will win the war, hunt down the terrorists and kill them. And when it matters most now John Kerry turns out to be one of the candidates of the War Party, because when it matters most John Kerry is no different than his blood brother, George W. Bush. It’s the war. The issue is the war and the occupation. It is being done in our name. George W. Bush started it and John F. Kerry wants to win it. We can be assured of one thing that whoever “wins,” the war will continue. And for the war to continue there has to be a draft and both Kerry and Bush continue to lie to you about it. I feel sad for my friends who are going to vote for John Kerry. My friends are opposed to war, they are committed to justice, and they feel that their only choice is to vote for John Kerry. But the reality is, if you are for peace, that is no choice at all. It tell my friends that I'm going to vote for myself on November 2nd as the ultimate protest vote. They tell me that I'm wasting my vote. I say to them that George W. Bush has appointed 11 of his Skull and Bones blood brothers to his administration. I wonder how many John Kerry will appoint to his?The most compelling and poignant moment of this supposed "Vote For Change" concert was when Eddie Vedder of Pearl Jam launched into his version of Dylan's "Masters of War." It sounded as if Bob Dylan had written the song last week:" Come you masters of warYou that build all the gunsYou that build the death planesYou that build the big bombsYou that hide behind wallsYou that hide behind desksI just want you to knowI can see through your masksYou that never done nothin'But build to destroyYou play with my worldLike it's your little toyYou put a gun in my handAnd you hide from my eyesAnd you turn and run fartherWhen the fast bullets flyLike Judas of oldYou lie and deceiveA world war can be wonYou want me to believeBut I see through your eyesAnd I see through your

Below is a demand letter sent to Bush from Karl Schwarz.
September 30, 2004 By Email, By Facsimile to White House
Mr. President,
I am a Conservative Christian Republican that has no intentions of voting for you in this year's election and many other Conservative Republicans are following me.
America demands the TRUTH and not after the elections; this nation demands the truth from you RIGHT NOW! This letter and an identical email will be going out to hundreds of thousands by me, millions by others. The following content was sent to the White House by facsimile earlier today from Ground Zero in New York City.

1. I demand as an American citizen that you lift the gag order on Sibel D. Edmonds and let Americans know what foreign names and what AMERICAN NAMES she uncovered in her FBI translations that were involved in drug trafficking, money laundering and the financing of 9-11. Her facts and your official story lies do not add up. Americans demand the truth on that matter before the election.

2. I demand to know what energy companies were in that Cheney Energy Task Force meeting and what discussions there were as to the steps that would be taken to remove the Taliban and Bridas Corporation as the last remaining obstacle to the United States controlling the Trans-Afghanistan Pipeline. I met that company in 1999 and have known since then about the Bridas v Unocal, $15 billion interference of contract lawsuit in US District Court, Southern District of Texas. I also know about the Fifth Circuit Court of Appeals decision on September 9, 2003 that upheld the Bridas $500 million arbitration settlement and the March 22, 2004 denial of Writ of Certiorari at the United States Supreme Court, Case 03-1018, Turkmenneft v Bridas.

3. I demand to know how many prisoners are being held at GITMO and other places that are either BRIDAS EMPLOYEES or are persons that know all about Bridas Corporation and what your administration did to get control of that Trans-Afghanistan pipeline.

4. I demand to know how many board meetings Condoleezza Rice and Thomas Kean sat in on at Chevron and Amerada Hess where it was discussed how they were going to deal with making the billions in Big Oil investments into a land locked Caspian Basin and how to get rid of the Taliban and Bridas so they could turn those investments into cash flow. How many times did Big Oil

Chalmers Johnson on Abolishing the CIA

Chalmers Johnson is president of the Japan Policy Research Institute, a
non-profit research and public affairs organization devoted to public education
concerning Japan and international relations in the Pacific. He taught for thirty
years, 1962-1992, at the Berkeley and San Diego campuses of the University of
California and held endowed chairs in Asian politics at both of them. At
Berkeley he served as chairman of the Center for Chinese Studies and as chairman
of the Department of Political Science. His B.A., M.A., and Ph.D. degrees in
economics and political science are all from the University of California,
Berkeley.

He first visited Japan in 1953 as a U.S. Navy officer and has lived and
worked there with his wife, the anthropologist Sheila K. Johnson, virtually every
year since 1961. Chalmers Johnson has been honored with fellowships from the
Ford Foundation, the Social Science Research Council, and the Guggenheim
Foundation; and in 1976 he was elected a fellow of the American Academy of Arts and
Sciences. He has written numerous articles and reviews and some fifteen books,
including Peasant Nationalism and Communist Power on the Chinese revolution,
An Instance of Treason on Japan's most famous spy, Revolutionary Change on the
theory of violent protest movements, and MITI and the Japanese Miracle on
Japanese economic development. This last-named book laid the foundation for the
revisionist school of writers on Japan, and because of it the Japanese press
dubbed him the Godfather of revisionism.

He was chairman of the academic advisory committee for the PBS television
series The Pacific Century, and he played a prominent role in the PBS
Frontline documentary Losing the War with Japan. Both won Emmy awards. His most
recent books are, as editor and contributor, Okinawa: Cold War Island (Cardiff,
Calif.: Japan Policy Research Institute, 1999); and Blowback: The Costs and
Consequences of American Empire (New York: Holt Metropolitan Books, 2000). The
latter won the 2001 American Book Award of the Before Columbus Foundation. His
new book, The Sorrows of Empire: Militarism, Secrecy, and the End of the
Republic will be published by Metropolitan in January 2004.

[CTRL] Reeve doubted embryonic stem-cell research

COUNTDOWN TO ELECTION DAYReeve doubted embryonic stem-cell researchSaid they're 'not able to do much about chronic injuries'

  Posted: October 13, 20041:00 a.m. Eastern

©2004WorldNetDaily.com
Sen. John Kerry's presidential campaign has used the death of
Christopher Reeve to highlight its differences with President Bush over
embryonic stem-cell research, but the actor himself expressed doubt over
the ability of the cells to treat chronic injuries such as the paralysis
he suffered from a horse-rising accident nearly a decade ago.
Reeve, a leading advocate for finding a cure for spinal cord injuries,
  died
Sunday night, shortly after Kerry mentioned his name in Friday night's
debate to argue for federal funding of the controversial research, which
opponents, such as President Bush, argue destroys human life.

In an interview earlier this year, however, Readers' Digest asked
Reeve, "What's your position on embryonic stem-cell research?"
"I advocate it because I think scientists should be free to pursue
every possible avenue," Reeve said. "It
appears though, at the moment, that embryonic stem cells are effective in
treating acute injuries and are not able to do much about chronic
  injuries."
Nevertheless, vice presidential candidate Sen. John Edwards made a
startling campaign promise Monday during a speech at a high school in
  Newton, Iowa.
  "We will stop juvenile diabetes,
Parkinson's, Alzheimer's and other debilitating diseases," Edwards said,
referring to federal funding of embryonic stem-cell research. " ... When
John Kerry is president, people like Christopher Reeve are going get up
out of that wheelchair and walk again."
But as a citizen questioner, Elizabeth Long, pointed out in Friday's
town-hall style debate, it's the adult stem cells, requiring no
destruction of human life, that actually have yielded remarkable results
  and show the most promise.
Long asked Kerry: "Thousands of people have already been cured or
treated by the use of adult stem cells or umbilical-cord stem cells.
However, no one has been cured by using embryonic stem cells. Wouldn't it
be wise to use stem cells obtained without the destruction of an embryo?"
In his response, Kerry said scientists have told him "we have the
option" of curing Parkinson's, diabetes and spinal-cord injuries using
  embryonic stem cells.
  But Princeton University Professor
Robert P. George insists no scientists – not even those most aggresively
in favor of the research that destroys embryos – have ever told Kerry any
  such thing.
"What Kerry has done here is told the
big lie about embryonic stem cells," George said in a
  column for National Review Online.
The claim is "outrageous," he said.

"No one knows when – or even whether or not – human embryonic stem
cells will be therapeutically useful in treating any major disease
  or injury."
George said there are profound and perhaps insurmountable problems with
the therapeutic use of the cells.
He emphasizes, despite what the Kerry
campaign has said, there is no federal ban on embryonic stem-cell
research. Yet the studies that have been funded with
state and private money have not even yielded clinical trials.
At the same time, stem cells from adults
or umbilical cords have yielded remarkable results.
"For months now, the Kerry campaign and its surrogates, such as Ron
Reagan Jr., have cruelly led suffering people to believe that cures for
their diseases are just around the corner," George said. "All we have to do is replace Bush with Kerry, open the
federal funding spigot, and presto! The blind see and the lame walk!"

  The Kerry campaign's "hyping of
embryo-destructive research for political gain is the cruelest and most
shameful episode in the story of the 2004 election,"
  George said.
In the Reader's Digest interview, Reeve was asked, "How have political
  decisions slowed stem cell research?"
"The religious right has had quite an influence on the debate," he
said. "I don't think that's appropriate. When we're setting public policy,
no one segment of society deserves the only seat at the table. That's the
way it's set in the Constitution. So debate all we want, hear from
everybody. And then allow our representatives to weigh the factors and
make laws that are going to be ethically sound, moral, responsible, but
  not the result

THE DOUBLE LIFE OF JAMES BAKER (long)

Documents obtained by The Nation reveal Bush Envoy has
private interest in Iraqi debt.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: October 12, 2004

CONTACT: Mike Webb, Publicity Director, 212-209-5426

In a special investigation, The Nation has learned that
former Secretary of State James Baker is both the
Special Presidential Envoy in charge of reducing Iraq's
debt and Senior Counselor at the Carlyle Group, which
is involved in a multibillion-dollar deal to purchase
Iraq's debt to Kuwait - a classic conflict of
interest, according to a leading expert on government
ethics and regulations (
http://www.thenation.com/doc.mhtml?i=20041101s=klein).

Nation columnist and author Naomi Klein reports that on
January 21, 2004, Baker flew to Kuwait to meet with top
government officials, including the Foreign Minister,
ostensibly to discuss whether Kuwait would forgive the
$57 billion in sovereign debt and war reparations owed
by Iraq. On the very same day, the debt restructuring
proposal--which asks the government of Kuwait to make a
$1 billion investment in Carlyle--was hand-delivered to
Kuwait's Foreign Minister.

Key members of the consortium that put together the
proposal include the Carlyle Group (in which Baker is
an equity partner with an estimated $180 million
stake), and the Albright Group (headed by former
Secretary of State Madeleine Albright). Under the deal
the consortium would use its personal connections to
persuade world leaders that Iraq must 'maximize' its
debt payments to Kuwait. The Consortium's stated goal
directly contradicts the US foreign policy aim of
Baker's mission.

Baker is on two sides of this transaction: he is
supposed to be representing the interests of the US,
but he is also a partner in Carlyle, and Carlyle wants
to get paid to help Kuwait recover its debts from
Iraq, explains Washington University law professor
Kathleen Clark.

After Baker's appointment, President Bush was asked
about a New York Times editorial that
called on Baker to resign his posts at The Carlyle
Group and Baker Botts law firm to preserve the
integrity of his position. Bush responded, I don't
read those editorials. Jim Baker is a man of high
integrity...We're fortunate he decided to take time out
of what is an active life...to step forward and serve
America. A Carlyle Group spokesman also insisted
that Baker's position will have no impact on Carlyle
whatsoever, although Carlyle now acknowledges that at
that time, the high-stakes deal was being negotiated.

The entire piece can be read here -

James Baker's Double Life
by Naomi Klein
The Nation - article posted October 12, 2004

When President Bush appointed former Secretary of State
James Baker III as his envoy on Iraq's debt on December
5, 2003, he called Baker's job a noble mission. At
the time, there was widespread concern about whether
Baker's extensive business dealings in the Middle East
would compromise that mission, which is to meet with
heads of state and persuade them to forgive the debts
owed to them by Iraq. Of particular concern was his
relationship with merchant bank and defense contractor
the Carlyle Group, where Baker is senior counselor and
an equity partner with an estimated $180 million stake.

Until now, there has been no concrete evidence that
Baker's loyalties are split, or that his power as

PART 8: A DIRTY SON-OF-A-BITCH THE BLIND SHEIK

By Alex Constantine

Emad Salem, the FBI informant - also the government¹s key witness in the
trial of Sheik Omar Abdel-Rahman and ten followers accused of plotting to
blow up the UN, an FBI office and two tunnels - was a hopeless confabulator
by his own admission. And a loaded one: Salem was paid a million dollars for
his testimony.

The Egyptian bodyguard for Shiekh Rahman admitted under questioning that he
had lied for years about his past. He boasted to his FBI handlers that he¹d
been ³an intelligence officer in the Egyption army,² when in fact, Salem
said, he¹d been a lowly ³technical officer.² He freely offered that on one
occasion, as the New York Times reported in March 1995, ³he even lied under
oath in a criminal trial in Manhattan, saying he had been wounded trying to
protect President Anwar Sadat of Egypt when he was assassinated in 1981.²1

Defense attorney William Kunstler investigated and discovered that Salem was
a lieutenant colonel in the Egyptian army, an unreliable witness, one ³who
never stopped working for the Egyptian government.² Kunstler grumbled that
Salem - a bigamist with one wife in New York and another in Egypt - was
devoid of character: ³He divulged that he had had amnesia since January of
1992, and that he had been going to a psychiatrist by the name of Dr. Stein
to help him with this situation...²

It devolved under questioning that Mr. Salem had received a quarter million
to one million dollars for his services as an FBI informant cum agent
provocateur. In one meeting with FBI, Agent John Anticev - secretly taped by
Salem - there was an argument over escalating expenses:

Anticev: ... It's like a little out of the ordinary.

Salem: Okay. Alright. I don't think it was. If that's what you think guys,
fine, but I don't think that because we was start already building the bomb
which is went off in the World Trade Center. It was built by supervising
supervision from the Bureau and the D.A. and we was all informed about it
and we know that the bomb start to be built. By who? By your confidential
informant...²3

Defense attorney Ron Kuby listened to the tape and commented: ³We have
received information that [Salem] was visually observed at the scene of the
bombing shortly after the bombing took place. Shortly after that, he was
admitted to the hospital, suffering from an ear problem that was consistent
with exposure to blast. The mastermind is the government of the United
States.4

Apart from the compensation that Salem received as an FBI asset, he was also
funded, according to Kunstler, ³by other sources linked to foreign
governments, including money from an organization founded [by] Rabbi Meir
Kahane.²

³He¹s just a dirty son-of-a-bitch,² Kunstler opined.5

So were the zealots in Rahman¹s Koran-happy wrecking crew. Four of the
bombers were convicted in 1994 on charges of conspiracy, possession of
explosives and assault. The defendents confessed that they were incited to
murder by US support for Israel. Ramsey Yousef, the bomb plot¹s
³mastermind,² proclaimed at his sentencing hearing in January 1998: ³Yes, I
am a terrorist and proud of it as long as it is against the U.S.
government.6

Sheik Omar Rahman was one of three ³spiritual² guides on Yousef¹s cratered
path through life. Though the cleric had been placed on the national watch
list, he entered the US with ease, thanks to a Œmuch-disputed² visa issued
to him by a CIA agent. Robert Freidman wrote that Rahman was ³infamous
throughout the Arab world for his role in the assassination of Egyptian
president Anwar el-Sadat.²7

BUSH A LYING PHONY
It's not hard to predict what President Bush, who sounds increasingly
desperate, will say tomorrow. Here are eight lies or distortions you'll
hear, and the truth about each:

Jobs

Mr. Bush will talk about the 1.7 million jobs created since the summer
of 2003, and will say that the economy is strong and getting stronger.
That's like boasting about getting a D on your final exam, when you
flunked the midterm and needed at least a C to pass the course.

Mr. Bush is the first president since Herbert Hoover to preside over a
decline in payroll employment. That's worse than it sounds because the
economy needs around 1.6 million new jobs each year just to keep up with
population growth. The past year's job gains, while better news than
earlier job losses, barely met this requirement, and they did little to
close the huge gap between the number of jobs the country needs and the
number actually available.

Unemployment

W will boast about the decline in the unemployment rate from its June
2003 peak. But the employed fraction of the population didn't rise at
all; unemployment declined only because some of those without jobs
stopped actively looking for work, and therefore dropped out of the
unemployment statistics. The labor force participation rate - the
fraction of the population either working or actively looking for work -
has fallen sharply under Mr. Bush; if it had stayed at its January 2001
level, the official unemployment rate would be 7.4 percent.

The deficit

IQ 80 will claim that the recession and 9/11 caused record budget
deficits. Congressional Budget Office estimates show that tax cuts
caused about two-thirds of the 2004 deficit.

The tax cuts

Charlie Mc Carthy Bush will claim that Senator John Kerry opposed
middle class tax cuts. But budget office numbers show that most of Mr.
Bush's tax cuts went to the best-off 10 percent of families, and more
than a third went to the top 1 percent, whose average income is more
than $1 million.

The Kerry tax plan

Submornoic Bush will claim, once again, that Mr. Kerry plans to raise
taxes on many small businesses. In fact, only a tiny percentage would be
affected. Moreover, as Mr. Kerry correctly pointed out last week, the
administration's definition of a small-business owner is so broad that
in 2001 it included Mr. Bush, who does indeed have a stake in a timber
company - a business he's so little involved with that he apparently
forgot about it.

Fiscal responsibility

Mr. Bush will claim that Mr. Kerry proposes $2 trillion in new spending.
That's a partisan number and is much higher than independent estimates.
Meanwhile, as The Washington Post pointed out after the Republican
convention, the administration's own numbers show that the cost of the
agenda Mr. Bush laid out is likely to be well in excess of $3 trillion
and far eclipses that of the Kerry plan.

Spending

On Friday, zero iq. Bush claimed that he had increased nondefense
discretionary spending by only 1 percent per year. The actual number is
8 percent, even after adjusting for inflation. Mr. Bush seems to have
confused his budget promises - which he keeps on breaking - with
reality.

Health care

Mr. Bush puppet of Mr. Bush Sr. will claim that Mr. Kerry wants to take
medical decisions away from individuals. The Kerry plan would expand
Medicaid (which works like Medicare), ensuring that children, in
particular, have health insurance. It would protect everyone against
catastrophic medical expenses, a particular help to the chronically ill.
It would do nothing to restrict patients' choices.

By singling out Mr. Bush's lies and misrepresentations, am I saying that
Mr. Kerry isn't equally at fault?

Mr. Kerry sometimes uses verbal shorthand that offers nitpickers things
to complain about. He talks of 1.6 million lost jobs; that's the

THE GEOPOLITICAL INTELLIGENCE REPORT

The Bush-Kerry Consensus
October 12, 2004

By George Friedman

During the two presidential debates held so far, we have learned three
things. First, that George W. Bush never made a mistake. Second, that John
Kerry would never have made any of the mistakes Bush made, and that he does
not intend to make any mistakes in the future. Third, and most important,
that there is precious little substantial disagreement between the two
candidates on war strategy going forward. Whatever Kerry has had to say about
Bush's execution of the war in the past, he has made it clear that he will
continue what Bush calls the War on Terror and that he will not abandon the
war in Iraq.

This last is by far the most important thing to have emerged during the
campaign from a geopolitical and strategic point of view. However much the
candidates argue over who would be better at fighting the war, it has become
clear that the war will go on regardless of who is elected or re-elected --
and that that includes the Iraq campaign. Neither is promising a radical
redefinition of the war. Each is claiming simply to be the more effective in
executing the war.

Therefore, on this fundamental level, the election has become unimportant.
What is important is how the war will be executed after the election. Neither
candidate has been particularly enlightening on this subject. There has been
no substantial discussion of follow-on campaigns or operations either in the
general war or in Iraq. From an American point of view, this should be
comforting. Underneath the storm and stress, the two parties have -- as
unbelievable as this might sound -- agreed that the war must continue
unabated. They have also agreed, in effect, that discussing war plans during
a debate would not serve anyone's interest. For whatever reason -- patriotism
or political expediency -- the campaign is being carried out within careful,
prudent boundaries. The future of the war is not being debated. The campaign
is being confined to vicious personal invective.

Since we know that the war will continue, it falls to us to consider how it
will be executed after Nov. 2. One fundamental fact must be borne in mind:
Since the war will not be abandoned, it will be the war, not the candidates,
that will determine the course of events. What we mean is simply this: The
war has an inherent logic that constrains policymakers. If you continue to
fight this war, there are certain things that you must do, and certain things
that are impossible. The choices are much fewer than what one might imagine.
Therefore, having agreed on the basic strategy that the war will continue,
most of what follows from this decision will apply to either a President Bush
or a President Kerry. If you are going to make fried chicken, there aren't
that many ways to do it.

U.S. and al Qaeda War Aims

The primary American war aim is simple: The United States wants to secure its
homeland against any further attacks by al Qaeda or any other group using its
tactics. It is a clear and simple war aim. The goal is easy to define, but
far more difficult to achieve. The United States is full of potential
targets, and al Qaeda is a very small and dispersed group. Defending the
homeland -- in the sense of physically preventing the penetration

If this is going to be against Federal law, why can't there be an injunction issued by
a Federal court against it? The Kerry campaign is truly asleep if they don't jump on
this one. If the US Government can suppress the latest Civil Rights Commission report
(or, more accurately, public discussions thereof) on the grounds that it might
unfairly affect the US Presidential election, then they can sure as hell stop this
injustice too!

the outcome of the election because of the broadcaster's documented ties to the

Sinclair is the same group that refused to air the Nightline Memorial Day tribute to
the soldiers killed in Iraq, because they considered it a political statement. The
network has ordered all 62 of its stations to air Stolen Honor, Wounds that Never

Sinclair's plan to air anti-Kerry propaganda before the election is an abuse of the

a violation of broadcast regulations requiring equal time for political candidates as
well as the McCain-Feingold campaign finance laws.

Now is the time for us to join our voices together to object to this injustice. There
are five main actions you can take to protest this abuse of the public airwaves. The
cumulative effect of each and every act will make a bold statement that the American
public is not going to tolerate this flagrant abuse for partisan political purpose.
So even if you only have time for one email or phone contact, please do it and make
your voice heard in this effort. Every action taken -- no matter how small -- will

Economic Troubles: From Elevated to High
  By Howard Dean4

The two critical issues for every president are national security and
economic security. While much media attention has been focused on
Iraq and al Qaida, most Americans have been quietly focusing on their
economic plight. What they are seeing is not pretty.

President Bush asserts that the economy has turned the corner and
that his tax cuts are working to stimulate the economy and create
jobs. A critical look at the gross domestic product tells the honest
story about the economy. GDP is the sum of consumer spending,
government spending, investments and net exports.

During the Clinton administration, consumer spending drove the
economy, increasing at an average of 1.77 percent per quarter. More
consumer spending on food, electronics, automobiles, durable goods and
houses means more jobs and a more robust economy. More
spending meant more jobs.

Despite the president's claim that his tax cuts increased consumer
spending, we now know that a big chunk of the money went to people
who make over $1 million per year. That does not help consumer spending,
because it has no effect on consumers who already had
enough money to buy what they wanted anyway. During the Bush
administration, consumer spending has sputtered, and in order to cut
cost,
companies have moved jobs to countries where wages are between 50 cents
and $2.50 per hour. That's why we are seeing job losses,
especially in America's manufacturing states like Michigan and Ohio.

President Bush's tax cuts of three years ago hurt the economy in the
long run. Politicians in this country have often promised tax cuts
without telling Americans what that means for local property taxes,
local school quality, and health care costs. Even our soldiers felt the
negative consequences of this tax cut. They were under-equipped when
they went to Iraq, and the administration sent 50,000 fewer troops
than the Pentagon recommended.

The underlying assumption that a tax cut means more money for
individuals to spend on consumer products is valid. However, The United
States as a country, and Americans as individuals have high debt and a
negative savings rates. The monies from the tax cut are used mostly
to pay off debt rather than for new spending. Our next President must
encourage savings.

Earlier this year, the Labor Department reported that 32,000 net new
jobs were created in July. Little did people notice that during that
month, 32,000 new government jobs were created. If it weren't for new
government jobs being created, the job numbers would have been
worse.

Government spending has dramatically increased during President Bush's
term, at a rate twice as fast as spending in the Clinton
administration. A rapid increase in government spending and tax cuts
that mostly go to people that make $1 million a year have created
huge long-term deficits.

Chronic deficits are bad for families, bad for businesses, bad for
states and bad for America. Not one Republican president has balanced
the budget in the last 34 years; only Bill Clinton did so. If it takes a
liberal to balance the budget then we need one in the White House.

Howard Dean, former governor of Vermont, is the founder of Democracy
for America, a grassroots organization that supports socially
progressive and fiscally responsible political candidates.

TBR News – October 11, 2004
Voice of the White House
In recent past issues, we have carried comments from a reporter assigned to the White House press corps. Some of these remarks, most especially one about Bush’s physical and mental problems, drew an enormous number of viewers and hundreds of inquiries, most especially from foreign press entities. The reporter advised us by email that there was rampant fury in the White House and security was becoming very tight. As a result of this, he decided to lay low for a few weeks and see how the wind was blowing. Yesterday, he sent us the following material which we are now posting. Some of it is outrageous in the extreme but to date, no one has proven him wrong. Our source was the first to expose and we were the first to make public, the accusations that the President of the United States was a man that suffered from serious psychological problems. Since our initial publication of what we call the Madness of King George, there has been increasing interest in the subject and herewith, we present additional input from inside the White House.
October 10, 2004: “This time, friends, I have some very important news for all of you. Unlike the usual silly gossip that goes on around the White House, intermingled with loud praying, this is really news. We are about to embark on another war! Yes, it has been decided and carefully planned. Who are we going to war with? Iran. Background here: (I am taking this from a paper which I have to return)
Thesis: Iran hates the United States and Israel. Iran has atomic weapons and missiles (the Shahab, courtesy of North Korean/Russian technicians) It can easily reach Tel Aviv. It can also reach US troop concentrations in Iraq. Israel is scared shitless. Their pressure groups have leaned on the White House, with a great deal of assistance from Cheney and the Neocons. The actual plan is this:
The U.S. has no troops available for an Iranian adventure and the Israelis would rather not lose any warm bodies so…it has been firmly decided that both Israel and the U.S. will launch a surprise attack against 1., Iranian missile sites, 2. Iranian nuclear facilities and 3. the leadership of Iran located in and around Tehran. How will this be done? By aircraft attack using U.S. developed “smart bombs” and the so-called “bunker-buster” bombs designed to destroy underground reinforced concrete facilities .We just sent these to Israel. Because of the political ramifications, the Israelis will conduct the main strikes, supported by U.S. aircraft as needed. The aim will be to wipe out any vestige of nuclear weaponry, its delivery system and all the Iranian leaders capable of starting any attacks on Israel (mostly Tel Aviv…too many fellow Muslims in Jerusalem.) Since it would be a problem for Israeli Air Force units to fly round trip from Israel, the solution will be to launch these attacks from U.S. aircraft carriers located in the Persian Gulf area. As I write, the super carrier USS John F. Kennedy (CV 67) is now in the Persian Gulf along with the so-called Essex Expeditionary Strike Group (ESG) [31st Marine Expeditionary Unit (MEU) (SOC)] which consists of:: USS Essex (LHD 2) USS Juneau (LPD 10) USS Harpers Ferry (LSD 49) USS Mobile Bay (CG 53USS Hopper (DDG 70) USS Preble (DDG 88) The initial attacks will be an early-morning surprise attack launched to coincide with religious services in Tehran’s Muslim mosques with the idea of catching not only the leading Mullahs inside but a large number of their congregations as well. One attack will concentrate on these religious centers and the other will hit both the underground nuclear facilities and identified (courtesy of U.S. satellite shots) missile launching sites. The U.S. will supply observation and radio surveillance aircraft with radar-jamming capacities operating out of Turkey and Italy. The entire attack is scheduled to last no more than one hour with at least three waves of Israeli aircraft utilized. No warning will be given to the Iranians and no declaration of war. The possible deaths of foreign diplomats in the attacks has been discussed and accepted as part of the price. This attack has the full support of the President who wants it launched before the elections. He can then make a speech to the American people stating that the evil Iranian nuclear weaponry has been destroyed by the Israelis with the full cooperation of his government as part of his heroic war against terrorists. Believe me, that speech has already been written and I have seen a copy of it. The brass here feels that this will have a tremendous impact on the American people, just before the elections. No U.S. ground troops will be used; Bush will stress that this is a joint U.S.-Israeli anti-terrorist project. Part of the speech deals with ongoing Shiite Iranian physical support of their Shiite brethren in Iraq and that by knocking out the Iranian nuclear

[CTRL] Larry Franklin: Just A Sideshow on the Road To Total War

Monday6thSeptember2004 : Larry Franklin: Just a Sideshow on the Road to Total War

By Kurt Nimmo
Isn’t it curious that right smack in the middle of an investigation of Israel spying on its best “friend,” Hamas pulls off back-to-back suicide bombings-after a lull of nearly six months-in Beersheba? Hamas declares the bombing was revenge for Israel’s assassination of Sheikh Ahmed Yassin and Abdel Aziz al-Rantissi. Rantissi was assassinated on April 17 and Yassin on March 22.
Is there a reason Hamas waited so long to take revenge? Of course there is. Hamas is essentially an Israeli contrivance. It’s used for effect when politically expedient.
Israel “aided Hamas directly-the Israelis wanted to use it as a counterbalance to the PLO,” Tony Cordesman, Middle East analyst for the Center for Strategic Studies, told the UPI’s Richard Sale in 2002. Hamas is a descendant of the Muslim Brotherhood, an Islamic organization long ago penetrated by the CIA. “There is a long historic alliance between the CIA and the Muslim Brotherhood,” writes Peter Goodgame. “The entire Bin Laden-CIA created ‘mujahideen’ network came from the Muslim Brotherhood.” As we now know, Prince Turki of Saudi intelligence, in cahoots with William Casey of the CIA and Pakistan’s ISI, sent bin Laden to Afghanistan and bankrolled the Services Center (Makhtab al-Khidmat) of the Jordanian Palestinian Abdullah Azzam, in the offices of the World Muslim League and Muslim Brotherhood in Peshawar (see Rashid, Taliban, p.131). After Azzam was assassinated, Makhtab al-Khidmat became al-Qaeda, although bin Laden did not call his organization such.
It should be obvious by now that the CIA and Mossad manufactured a virulent strain of Islamic terrorism for their own purposes. For instance, as an excuse for the Zionists to never make peace with the Palestinians. “What does frighten Sharon,” Yossi Sarid, chairman of the Meretz party, told Haaretz in 2002, “is any prospect or sign of calm or moderation. If the situation were to calm down and stabilize, Sharon would have to return to the negotiating table and, in the wake of pressure from within and without, he would have to raise serious proposals for an agreement. This moment terrifies Sharon and he wants to put it off for as long as he possibly can.”
No doubt Sharon is also keen to deflect attention from the fact that Israel has a long-standing spy operation in America. Of course, considering how the Bushites and Congress bend over backwards to please the Likudites in Israel, such a spy operation may not even be necessary. Regardless, the casual relationship between the Zionist neocons in the Pentagon and the Zionists in Israel-for the moment splashed all over the front page-looks bad for Sharon, especially during the US election cycle. Hamas strikes when the Likudites need a diversion. Same thing for Bush and his facile cave dweller terror threats.
In addition, the latest terror attack in Israel gives Sharon all the more reason to push his 720-kilometre apartheid wall, as Reuters quoted Sharon as saying he would do hours after the attack. Last month the UN General Assembly put forward a resolution demanding Israel dismantle the apartheid wall after the International Court of Justice declared it to be in violation of international law. But then the Likudites and the Bushcons are above international law. International law is to be used as a crowbar against Iran as it scrambles to develop a few nukes, knowing full well what the Zionists in Tel Aviv and Washington have in mind for the Iranian people. As North Korea understands full well, saber-rattling enemies think twice when you have a few nuclear warheads under your belt.
Israel is truly an outlaw nation. Its criminal government is run by racist settlers who are pushing for war against Iran, Syria, Lebanon, and the Palestinians. Israel realizes it cannot possibly wage war against the Arabs and the Iranians without America’s military prowess-and its large supply of naive bullet-stoppers-so it has spent years undermining the US government and buying off Congress through AIPAC. It has exploited the mental problems of the Christian Zionists-who believe Israeli murder and hegemony are key to their fanatical biblical fantasies-and has worked tirelessly to subvert the highest reaches of the American government by installing the conniving Zionist neocons in the White House and Pentagon. Sharon really does not want John Kerry in the White House, but if push comes to shove Kerry will do in a pinch because he is also an avowed Zionist-some say more of a Zionist than even Bush-and he would be the first Jewish president of the United States (not only was his grandfather born Fritz Kohn, but his brother, Cameron Kerry, converted to Judaism when he married a Jewish woman, Kathy Weinman).
Lost in the chatter about Larry Franklin is the fact the neocons and Sharon are itching to invade Iran, possibly

[CTRL] Vioxx Withdrawal Highlights Potential Problems With Prescription Drug Advertising

Vioxx Withdrawal Highlights Potential Problems With Prescription
Drug Advertising13 Oct 2004With
Merck's recent withdrawal of arthritis medication Vioxx from the
market, "prescription drug promotions of all kinds -- the celebrity
pitches, the glossy television and magazine ads, the freebies to
doctors -- are likely to come under new scrutiny as patients,
researchers and consumer groups question both their honesty and
their ultimate public cost," the Philadelphia Inquirer reports.
Direct-to-consumer prescription drug advertising "helped
boost Vioxx sales to astounding heights," with Merck spending $49
million on ads for the drug from January through July, according to
the Inquirer. Between 1996 -- the year prior to FDA's
relaxing of TV and radio prescription drug ad rules -- and 2003, the
drug industry's direct-to-consumer ad spending increased from $791
million to $3.2 billion, according to IMS Health, the Inquirer
reports. In 2003, industry promotional spending, including
consumer advertising, no-cost drug samples, "educational" trips and
drug representative visits to physicians, totaled $25 billion.
During roughly the same period, prescription drug expenses increased
two to five times more than spending on hospital care and physician
services, according to the Kaiser Family Foundation.
Connection Between Ad Spending, Consumer
BuyingSome critics say that it is "no coincidence ...
that as promotional spending soars, so does spending on drugs -- by
consumers who are both paying higher drug prices and being
encouraged to buy drugs they never used before," the Inquirer
reports (Vrazo, Philadelphia Inquirer, 10/10). Many
physicians say that when a patient requests a prescription drug by
name, they are "unlikely to say no ... as long as it does not seem
wholly inappropriate for the condition," partly because they are
"too pressed for time" to explore alternatives and "do not want to
alienate patients who can take their business elsewhere," the New
York Times reports. Mary Frank, a family physician in California,
said that some patients also favor prescription drugs over OTC
medications because health plans generally cover prescriptions.
Presidential Candidates' PositionsDemocratic
presidential candidate Sen. John Kerry's (Mass.) campaign "blames
the ad-driven demand for pushing up spending on pricey drugs, which
contribute to double-digit inflation in the nation's health care
costs," the Times reports. Megan Hauck, deputy policy
director for President Bush's re-election campaign, said Democrats
are "exaggerating the issue" because a 2002 Government
Accountability Office report found the drug industry spent "far
more" on no-cost drug samples than on direct-to-consumer ads,
according to the Times. Changes in Regulations
ProposedFDA is considering a proposal to allow drug
makers to simplify magazine and newspaper ads to make them "more
reader-friendly," according to the Times. Under the proposal, drug
companies would be able to summarize the most important or most
common side effects in large type; currently, they must list
detailed data about benefits and risks, which are often printed in
small type (Elliott/Ives, New York Times, 10/12). http://www.kaisernetwork.org

Israeli tail wags American dog
GWYNNE DYERIn a U.S. election campaign that is more about foreign policy than any presidential race in decades, one issue is completely off-limits: the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.
George W. Bush and John Kerry both back Israel 100 per cent, and neither man will offer a single word of criticism about Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon's "disengagement" plan, even though it means abandoning the notion of a peace settlement.
Once again, the Israeli tail is wagging the American dog.
Last week, Sharon's chief of staff and most trusted adviser, Dov Weisglass, indulged in a carefully calculated indiscretion in an interview with the newspaper Ha'aretz.
"The `disengagement' is actually formaldehyde," he said. "It supplies the amount of formaldehyde that is necessary so there will not be a political process with the Palestinians." Perfectly true, of course, and yet it was a shocking thing to say out loud.
Sharon was never really going to accept a peace deal with the Palestinians that required giving up most of the illegal Jewish settlements in the occupied territories conquered by Israel in 1967. Indeed, he was the man responsible for starting the settlements in the first place.
Yet, when he came to power in 2001 he inherited the Oslo peace accords, which imagined an Israeli-Palestinian peace based on two states living side by side — and the Palestinian state was to be created on exactly those territories.
Sharon had to pretend that he agreed with that goal because the whole international community (including the U.S.) supported the two-state solution. Over the past few years the "Oslo process" mutated into the so-called "road map" to peace, but the goal remained the same: Israeli evacuation of the occupied territories and the creation of a Palestinian state living peacefully alongside Israel. In the past six months, however, Sharon has achieved breakout.
"Disengagement" means that Israel will evacuate its settlements in the densely populated Gaza Strip, where 7,500 Jews live surrounded by 1.3 million Palestinians, and four other tiny settlements with only a few hundred people that lie beyond the "security fence" in the northern West Bank.
They never made any sense in terms of the cost of protecting them anyway.
But by abandoning them, Sharon can seem to be making a major concession for peace — while hanging on to all the other West Bank settlements where the vast majority of the settlers live forever.
Forever is a long time, and Sharon still maintains the pretense that at some future time, when there is a different Palestinian leadership, there might be further negotiations about a Palestinian state.
But Weisglass spilled the beans on Oct. 6, pointing out that he had negotiated an agreement with the Bush administration in late August in which the United States had changed its policy of 37 years and agreed that the illegal Jewish settlements in the West Bank would eventually become part of Israel.
The 190,000 Jewish settlers there, he boasted, "will not be moved from their place."
"What I effectively agreed to with the Americans was that part of the settlements would not be dealt with at all, and the rest will not be dealt with until the Palestinians turn into Finns," said Weisglass, adding that this would stall the peace process indefinitely.
"When you freeze that process, you prevent the establishment of a Palestinian state, and you prevent a discussion on the refugees, the borders and Jerusalem.
"Effectively, this whole package called the Palestinian state, with all that it entails, has been removed indefinitely from our agenda ... all with a presidential blessing and the ratification of both houses of Congress."
Weisglass said what he did to win back the more fundamentalist supporters of Sharon's Likud party, who are threatening to abandon the party on the grounds that God gave Israel the land and it must never yield an inch of it.
Bush, presumably, did what he did in order to retain the votes of the extreme evangelical Protestants, estimated to account for a third of the Republican core vote, who believe that God's plan requires the expansion of Israel and a great war in the Middle East.
But why does Kerry go along with it?
Presumably because his advisers tell him that in a tight election it would be suicide to alienate American Jews, most of whom reflexively support any Israeli government, regardless of its policies, and most of whom are still traditionally Democratic voters.
It all make sense in terms of political tactics, but it commits America to a policy that is contrary to international law and is not supported by any other government in the world except Israel's.
If Kerry should win, it means he, too, would be shackled to a policy that makes it impossible

Hundreds of thousands of dollars have been given to Kerry from the
pro-Iranian lobby, possibly influencing the presidential candidate's
startling call to provide Tehran with the nuclear fuel it seeks, according
to Iran's Student Movement Coordination Committee for Democracy chairman
  Aryo Pirouznia.
With top Iranian officials openly calling for the development of
nuclear weapons within the next four months and overwhelming intelligence
indicating Iran is seeking to create a nuclear arsenal, Kerry has been
insisting as president he would provide Tehran with nuclear fuel as long
as it is used for peaceful purposes only, a position that has many Middle
  East analysts baffled.

During the first presidential debate, Kerry said, "I think the United
States should have offered the opportunity to provide the nuclear fuel,
test them, see whether or not they were actually looking for it for
  peaceful purposes."
The same policy of accommodation toward Iran's nuclear aspirations is
clearly outlined on Kerry's campaign website as well.
Under the heading: "Prevent Iran From Developing Nuclear Weapons," the
Kerry campaign states: "Iran claims that its nuclear program is only to
meet its domestic energy needs. John Kerry's proposal would call their
bluff by organizing a group of states to offer Iran the nuclear fuel they
need for peaceful purposes and take back the spent fuel so they cannot
divert it to build a weapon. If Iran does not accept this offer, their
true motivations will be clear ..."
Pirouznia, who is holding a press conference in Washington, D.C., this
morning, is disclosing the details of Kerry's financial ties to backers of
the mullah government in Iran that have been seeking to moderate America's
harsh line with regard to Tehran's nuclear aspirations.
Most prominent among them is Hassan Nemazee, 54, an investment banker
based in New York who has joined the board of the American-Iranian
Council, a U.S. lobbying group that consistently has supported lifting
U.S. sanctions on Iran and accommodating the Tehran regime. Nemazee has
raised more than $100,000 for the senator's campaign.
Nominated to become U.S. ambassador to Argentina by President Clinton
in 1999, Nemazee eventually withdrew his nomination after a former partner
raised allegations of business improprieties, WND
  previously reported.
As well, a Nemazee friend in Silicon Valley, Faraj Aalaei, has raised
between $50,000 and $100,000 for the Kerry campaign.
Last year, Aalaei married a 35-year-old recent immigrant from Iran
named Susan Akbarpour, who has also raised between $50,000 and $100,000
  for the campaign.
In just six years since coming to the United States on a tourist visa
from Iran, Akbarpour has started a newspaper, a magazine, and, most
recently, a trade association whose goal is to get sanctions lifted and
promote U.S. business and investment in Iran.
Kerry has embraced the political agenda of Akbarpour and other wealthy
Iranian-Americans lobbying for Tehran. Aside from nuclear accommodation,
other key positions include ending the finger printing of Iranian visitors
to the U.S; expanding "family reunion" visas to allow extended family
members of Iranians living in the U.S. to immigrate here legally and in
large numbers; offering a "dialogue" with the hard-line,
terrorist-supporting clerics in Tehran; and help Iran join the World Trade
  Organization.
Pirouznia will be working closely with Dr. Jerome Corsi, co-author of
the New York Times best selling "Unfit to Command," on a new book about
the Iranian-Kerry connection titled, "Atomic Islam," which will be
published by WND Books in 2005.
"America is incredibly popular with the Iranian masses, so this is a
grave mistake for a short-term benefit," Pirouznia says. "To the regime,
[Kerry's policy] sends a message that America is willing to make a deal
despite the blood of Americans who were murdered in Dhahran [Saudi Arabia]
and are being killed today in Iraq by so-called foreign elements. And to
Iranians, it shows that the old establishment may be back in power, a
  return to the Carter era."
  Dr. Corsi said, "Not

Judge Holds Second Reporter in
  Contempt
  Wednesday October 13,
  2004 10:01 PM

  By CURT ANDERSON
  Associated Press Writer
WASHINGTON (AP) - A second reporter was held in contempt Wednesday by a
federal judge for refusing to reveal confidential sources before a grand
jury investigating the leak of an undercover CIA officer's identity.
U.S. District Judge Thomas F. Hogan ordered Time magazine reporter
Matthew Cooper jailed for up to 18 months and the magazine fined $1,000 a
day for refusing to comply with a grand jury subpoena seeking the
testimony. Hogan suspended the jail time and fine pending the outcome of
  an appeal.
The ruling was nearly identical to one issued last week by Hogan in the
case of Judith Miller, a reporter for The New York Times who is also
refusing to name her sources. Miller and Cooper, both represented by
lawyer Floyd Abrams, are expected to join together in appealing their
  cases on First Amendment grounds.
``No reporter in the United States should have to go to jail for simply
doing their job,'' said Cooper, who is Time's White House correspondent.
Hogan repeatedly has cited the Supreme Court in ruling that reporters
do not enjoy special protection from providing testimony to grand juries
unless they can show prosecutorial harassment or bad faith. Hogan said he
could find no evidence of either on the part of U.S. Attorney Patrick
Fitzgerald, who was appointed special prosecutor in the investigation.
``I'm convinced this is not a fishing expedition or an improper
exercise of prosecutorial authority,'' Hogan said.
The investigation concerns whether a crime was committed when someone
leaked the identity of CIA officer Valerie Plame, whose name was published
by syndicated columnist Robert Novak on July 14, 2003.
The column appeared after Plame's husband, former Ambassador Joseph
Wilson, wrote a newspaper opinion column criticizing President Bush's
claim that Iraq had sought uranium in Niger - a claim the CIA had asked
  Wilson to check out.
Wilson has said he believes his wife's name was leaked as payback for
  his outspokenness.
Disclosure of the identity of an undercover intelligence officer can be
a federal crime, if prosecutors can show the leak was intentional and the
leaker knew about the officer's secret status.
Novak, who cited two senior administration officials as his sources,
has refused to say whether he has testified or been subpoenaed. Fitzgerald
  declined comment Wednesday.
Prosecutors have interviewed President Bush, Vice President Cheney,
Secretary of State Colin Powell and other current or former administration
officials in the investigation. At least five reporters have been
  subpoenaed.
In August, Cooper agreed to provide limited testimony about a
conversation he had with Lewis ``Scooter'' Libby, Vice President Cheney's
chief of staff, after Libby released Cooper from his promise of
confidentiality. Fitzgerald then issued a second, broader subpoena seeking
  the names of other sources.
``The prosecutor came back a few days later and basically asked for
everything in my notebook,'' Cooper said.
Abrams said he expected legal filings in the appeals of both Miller and
Cooper to be completed by Nov. 10 before the U.S. Court of Appeals for the
District of Columbia Circuit, which would then likely schedule an oral
argument. That means the CIA leak criminal investigation, which began in
September 2003, could drag on into early 2005.

U.S. Funds Chat-Room Surveillance Study

By Michael Hill
The Associated Press
Monday, October 11, 2004; 8:31 PM

TROY, N.Y. -- Amid the torrent of jabber in Internet chat rooms - flirting
by QTpie and BoogieBoy, arguments about politics and horror flicks - are
terrorists plotting their next move?

The government certainly isn't discounting the possibility. It's taking
the idea seriously enough to fund a yearlong study on chat room
surveillance under an anti-terrorism program.

A Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute computer science professor hopes to
develop mathematical models that can uncover structure within the
scattershot traffic of online public forums.

Chat rooms are the highly popular and freewheeling areas on the Internet
where people with self-created nicknames discuss just about anything:
teachers, Kafka, cute boys, politics, love, root canal. They are also
places where malicious hackers have been known to trade software tools,
stolen passwords and credit card numbers. The Pew Internet American Life
Project estimates that 28 million Americans have visited Internet chat
rooms.

Trying to monitor the sea of traffic on all the chat channels would be
like assigning a police officer to listen in on every conversation on the
sidewalk - virtually impossible.

Instead of rummaging through megabytes of messages, RPI professor Bulent
Yener will use mathematical models in search of patterns in the chatter.
Downloading data from selected chat rooms, Yener will track the times that
messages were sent, creating a statistical profile of the traffic.

If, for instance, RatBoi and bowler1 consistently send messages within
seconds of each other in a crowded chat room, you could infer that they
were speaking to one another amid the noise of the chat room.

For us, the challenge is to be able to determine, without reading the
messages, who is talking to whom, Yener said.

In search of hidden communities, Yener also wants to check messages for
certain keywords that could reveal something about what's being discussed
in groups.

The $157,673 grant comes from the National Science Foundation's Approaches
to Combat Terrorism program. It was selected in coordination with the
nation's intelligence agencies.

The NSF's Leland Jameson said the foundation judged the proposal strictly
on its broader scientific merit, leaving it to the intelligence community
to determine its national security value. Neither the CIA nor the FBI
would comment on the grant, with a CIA spokeswoman citing the
confidentiality of sources and methods.

Security officials know al-Qaida and other terrorist groups use the
Internet for everything from propaganda to offering tips on kidnapping.
But it's not clear if terrorists rely much on chat rooms for planning and
coordination.

Michael Vatis, founding director of the National Infrastructure Protection
Center and now a consultant, said he had heard of terrorists using chat
rooms, which he said offer some security as long as code phrases are used.
Other cybersecurity experts doubted chat rooms' usefulness to terrorists
given the other current options, from Web mail to hiding messages on
designated Web pages that can only be seen by those who know where to
look.

As a result of meeting with the enemy and then advocating the enemy's
position, Kerry should have been prosecuted for treason, sufferd forfeiture of
all pay, allowances and awards, served a long sentence in the brig and received
a bad conduct discharge. While that didn't happen, in now appears Kerry may have
received a less than honorable discharge that was later changed to an honorable
discharge by a Board of Review at the direction of President Jimmie
Carter.

Mystery Surrounds Kerry's Navy Discharge
BY THOMAS LIPSCOMB - Special to the SunOctober 13, 2004URL:
http://www.nysun.com/article/3107
An official Navy document on Senator Kerry's campaign Web site listed as Mr.
Kerry's "Honorable Discharge from the Reserves" opens a door on a well kept
secret about his military service.
The document is a form cover letter in the name of the Carter
administration's secretary of the Navy, W. Graham Claytor. It describes Mr.
Kerry's discharge as being subsequent to the review of "a board of officers."
This in it self is unusual. There is nothing about an ordinary honorable
discharge action in the Navy that requires a review by a board of officers.
According to the secretary of the Navy's document, the "authority of
reference" this board was using in considering Mr. Kerry's record was "Title 10,
U.S. Code Section 1162 and 1163. "This section refers to the grounds for
involuntary separation from the service. What was being reviewed, then, was Mr.
Kerry's involuntary separation from the service. And it couldn't have been an
honorable discharge, or there would have been no point in any review at all. The
review was likely held to improve Mr. Kerry's status of discharge from a less
than honorable discharge to an honorable discharge.
A Kerry campaign spokesman, David Wade, was asked whether Mr. Kerry had ever
been a victim of an attempt to deny him an honorable discharge. There has been
no response to that inquiry.
The document is dated February 16, 1978. But Mr. Kerry's military commitment
began with his six-year enlistment contract with the Navy on February 18, 1966.
His commitment should have terminated in 1972. It is highly unlikely that either
the man who at that time was a Vietnam Veterans Against the War leader, John
Kerry, requested or the Navy accepted an additional six year reserve commitment.
And the Claytor document indicates proceedings to reverse a less than honorable
discharge that took place sometime prior to February 1978.
The most routine time for Mr. Kerry's discharge would have been at the end of
his six-year obligation, in 1972. But how was it most likely to have come
about?
NBC's release this March of some of the Nixon White House tapes about Mr.
Kerry show a great deal of interest in Mr. Kerry by Nixon and his executive
staff, including, perhaps most importantly, Nixon's special counsel, Charles
Colson. In a meeting the day after Mr. Kerry's Senate testimony, April 23, 1971,
Mr. Colson attacks Mr. Kerry as a "complete opportunist...We'll keep hitting
him, Mr. President."
Mr. Colson was still on the case two months later, according to a memo he
wrote on June 15,1971, that was brought to the surface by the Houston Chronicle.
"Let's destroy this young demagogue before he becomes another Ralph Nader."
Nixon had been a naval officer in World War II. Mr. Colson was a former Marine
captain. Mr. Colson had been prodded to find "dirt" on Mr. Kerry, but reported
that he couldn't find any.
The Nixon administration ran FBI surveillance on Mr. Kerry from September
1970 until August 1972. Finding grounds for an other than honorable discharge,
however, for a leader of the Vietnam Veterans Against the War, given his
numerous activities while still a reserve officer of the Navy, was easier than
finding "dirt."
For example, while America was still at war, Mr. Kerry had met with the North
Vietnamese and Viet Cong delegation to the Paris Peace talks in May 1970 and
then held a demonstration in July 1971 in Washington to try to get Congress to
accept the enemy's seven point peace proposal without a single change. Woodrow
Wilson threw Eugene Debs, a former presidential candidate, in prison just for
demonstrating for peace negotiations with Germany during World War I. No court
overturned his imprisonment. He had to receive a pardon from President
Harding.
Mr. Colson refused to answer any questions about his activities regarding Mr.
Kerry during his time in the Nixon White House. The secretary of the Navy at the
time during the Nixon presidency is the current chairman of the Senate Armed
Services Committee, Senator Warner. A spokesman for the senator, John Ullyot,
said, "Senator Warner has no recollection that would either confirm or challenge
any representation that Senator Kerry received a less than honorable

Subject: President Bush Finished Strong--It's Our Turn.

Dear William,

President Bush won a clear victory on substance, style and credibility in the final
debate tonight - showing that he's the candidate who finishes strong. The President
spoke with clarity, conviction and compassion about the most important issues facing
our country.

On issue after issue, he showed Americans that he shares their values and priorities.
He revealed just how far out of the mainstream Kerry's record lies on abortion, gay
marriage, immigration, taxes, health care and fiscal discipline.

John Kerry showed how far he's willing to go to deceive the American people about this
record when he said I've actually passed 56 individual bills that I've personally
written. The fact is that he has only been the lead sponsor of 5 bills and 4
resolutions that have become law.

The most revealing moments:

Kerry believes education is unrelated to the economy - this is a fundamental
misunderstanding of how individuals achieve the American Dream.

President Bush believes that no child should be left behind when it comes to the
quality of education she or he can get.

A good education is the foundation for opportunity, prosperity and success.
On immigration, John Kerry said, we need an earned legalization program for people
who have been here a long time. This amnesty proposal stands in contrast to the
President's temporary worker program.

President Bush revealed John Kerry's tendency to confuse a litany of complaints with a
plan. John Kerry demonstrated that he didn't have a plan and he resorted to foreign
policy attacks, because he does not have an agenda for America.

Now that the debates are over, we must concentrate on our efforts to turn out the
vote. You can help turn out the vote by completing these tasks:

Join us for Walk the Vote Weekend - Tens of thousands of volunteers at thousands of
parties around the country will go door-to-door in their neighborhoods to turn out the
vote. The President will kick off the event with a live Internet rally webcast
Saturday, October 16 from 12:45 - 2:00 pm EDT. We'll provide the maps, handouts, and
everything you'll need to Walk the Vote in your neighborhood. Create your Walk at
www.GeorgeWBush.com/Walk.

Volunteer to help in the last 72 hours - Volunteers are needed to work shifts in
campaign offices from coast to coast. Sign up at www.GeorgeWBush.com/72Hour - if
you're not yet a Volunteer, you'll need to sign up first at
www.GeorgeWBush.com/SignUp. Need your password? You can find it here:
www.georgewbush.com/Secure/Profile/PwdLookup.aspx

Spread the President's message - Use your Virtual Precinct
(www.GeorgeWBush.com/VirtualPrecinct) to send a message to your friends and family.
During the debate, the President mentioned Kerry's Liberal Record
(www.KerrysLiberalRecord.com), send an e-mail to the undecided voters you know and
share that record.

Call Talk Radio and Write Letters to the Editor - By making your voice heard on talk
radio (www.georgewbush.com/GetActive/CallTalkRadio.aspx) and the letters page of your
local paper (www.georgewbush.com/GetActive/WriteNewspapers.aspx), you can have a
tremendous impact on those voters who are still trying to decide. Hearing from their
neighbors the reasons President Bush is right for your community moves many voters in
the final days.

Vote! - Many states allow you to cast your vote early or by absentee ballot. If you
qualify to vote by absentee or vote early in-person, you can cast your ballot now. Our
website will tell you if you are eligible. Visit www.GeorgeWBush.com/VoteEarly to
determine if, and where, you can vote now in your area. Please follow your local
election guidelines.

By taking action now, you can guarantee our victory in November. In the remaining days
of this campaign, our efforts to get the President's supporters to the polls will make
the difference. Your help is greatly appreciated.

Thanks for all you do.

Sincerely,

Marc Racicot
Chairman

This CONSERVATIVE ALERT is a special message from
RightMarch.com for Bobby Waddell:

ALERT: The wanna-be censors at MoveOn.org are at it again.

They've tried to come against Fox News for over a year now,
just because the news network finally offers Americans fair
and balanced reporting. MoveOn would rather keep the
liberal bias of mainstream networks streaming into our
homes instead.

This time, the radical leftists at MoveOn.org want the FCC
to stop the Sinclair Broadcast Group from airing a new
documentary called Stolen Honor: Wounds That Never Heal.
Stolen Honor investigates how Democrat presidential
nominee John Kerry's actions during the Vietnam era
impacted the treatment of American soldiers and POWs.
Using John Kerry's own words, the documentary juxtaposes
John Kerry's actions with the words of veterans who were
still in Vietnam when John Kerry was leading the anti-war
movement.

Sinclair, owner of the largest chain of television
stations in the nation, has tentatively scheduled this
special news event featuring the topic of Americans held
as prisoners of war in Vietnam, which will include a
showing of Stolen Honor, for sometime in the next two
weeks. They have invited Kerry to participate in the news
special as well, to tell HIS side of the story.

The liberals at MoveOn.org don't want ANY news reported
that could possibly reflect unfavorably on their far-left
candidate, John Kerry. So, they're mobilizing their forces
to call local Sinclair stations, DEMANDING that they NOT
broadcast this important news special.

Patriotic Americans across the nation need to COUNTER their
efforts -- and it will only take a couple of minutes for
YOU to do YOUR part.

TAKE ACTION: CALL or WRITE the Sinclair station that's
nearest to you, and let them know that you DO want to see
Stolen Honor, and will be very disappointed if they give
in to the demands of left-wing censors who don't want
Americans to know the TRUTH about John Kerry disgraceful
actions. Find your local station's contact info here:

http://sbgweb2.sbgnet.com/business/television.shtml

If there's not a Sinclair station near you, voice your
support by emailing or calling Sinclair directly at
[EMAIL PROTECTED] or 410-568-1503.

Don't let MoveOn.org's minions stop free speech in America.
Sinclair has the right to air news stories and documentaries,
on their OWN stations, without threats from radical left-
wing censors!

NOTE: Be sure to forward this Alert to everyone you know
who wants to stand up for Sinclair Broadcast Group's right
to freedom of speech and freedom of the press. Thank you!

[CTRL] PA II - Final Piece Of Police State Puzzle Ready

2004-10-14 Thread Bill Shannon
-Caveat Lector-

http://www.americanfreepress.net/

Patriot Act II
Final Piece of Police State Puzzle Ready

By John Tiffany

The Bush administration’s allies in Congress, led by J. Dennis Hastert of Illinois, the speaker of the House, have launched another assault on constitutionally protected civil liberties with a bill many are calling Patriot Act II (PA II). However, it is not to be confused with the 2003 version of Patriot Act II. But according to the Associated Press, in a draft of the House GOP legislation, many of the provisions are similar to the draft copy of the “Domestic Security Enhancement Act of 2003” that leaked out of the Justice Department in January 2003.
Many Democrats and civil libertarians charge the new PA II authorizes heavy-handed infringements on civil liberties. House Democratic leaders and civil liberties advocates said on Sept. 22 that the Republican bill ostensibly responding to the findings of the 9-11 commission would go well beyond the panel’s recommendations. It would call for broad new powers for law enforcement agencies, they said, and would include new authority to conduct electronic surveillance in terrorism investigations.
Among the provisions, said AP, are measures on the deportation of aliens who are suspected of being linked to foreign revolutionary groups which have been labeled as terrorists, mandatory pretrial detention for terrorism suspects, warrants against non-citizens even when a target can’t be tied to a foreign power and enhanced penalties for threats or attempts to use chemical or nuclear weapons.
John Feehery is a spokesman for Hastert. Feehery told AP that criticism of the bill was unwarranted as of the evening of Sept. 22, because the legislation was still not in final form and was not ready for release to the public. A spokesman for House Majority Leader Tom DeLay (R-Texas) agreed on Sept. 22 that House members were still working on a final version of the legislation.
But critics warn that the proposed law is aimed against the entire U.S. population, not a minority of Arab immigrants.
The proposal, they say, would grant the government the power to strip citizenship of native-born Americans and deport them without any evidence of wrongdoing, even though this would be contrary to the Constitution.
It would also allow for secret arrests, secret trials and secret torturing of “suspects.” Habeas corpus, Americans’ most sacred right, would be eliminated.
The law would also remove all restrictions on police spying on citizens.
Patriot Act II would create 15 new death penalties, one of which could be applied to acts of protest. Under the Hastert measure’s definitions, anti-war protesters could be deemed terrorists. In fact, any dissident could be spied on, harassed, and imprisoned indefinitely for exercising their legal and constitutionally protected rights.
This legislation would give the government the same power that Stalin and Julius Caesar gave themselves, said one detractor.
While terrorism certainly is a threat that must be addressed, curtailing the civil liberties of innocent Americans is by no means a way of doing so.
AFP readers will recall that the first so-called Patriot Act was passed without the members of Congress being allowed to view the draft of the bill. Those who wanted it to be read and debated were told to vote for it or they would be blamed for the next terrorist outrage. It passed overwhelmingly.
Many experts fear similar tactics will be used to pass PA II, keeping the public ignorant of the proposed law’s existence until it is too late.

[CTRL] Litmus test for Sureme Court judges

2004-10-14 Thread Jim Rarey
-Caveat Lector-

In the debate
yesterday the two presidential candidates were asked if they had a "litmus" test
for Supreme Court Justices. President Bush said he had none. Although John Kerry
did not call it a litmus test, he said he would not nominate a judge who would
vote to overturn "Roe vs Wade" the Supreme Court Decision that made abortion on
demand legal.

However, there
is one test that should be put to judges at all levels. The following is a
revised version of an article I first published December 1, 2000 before the
court handed down its decision in the Florida election controversy. (A separate
article was written about those decisions which I will repost.)

MEDIUM RARE
By Jim Rarey

April 6,
2003

THE “LIVING
CONSTITUTION” FRAUD

There is no better example of the
success of the “big lie technique” than the perception in legal circles and the
general population that the Supreme Court has the power to “interpret” the
Constitution. In many law schools, law students are taught that the famous
Marbury v. Madison Supreme Court case conferred that power on the court. Nothing could be further from the
truth.

True, that case established the
principal of “judicial review” of congressional statutes, by the court, as
implied in the “supremacy clause” in Article V of the Constitution. That clause grants supremacy to the
“laws of the United States” made in pursuance (to the Constitution). Implied is
the fact that some body must make a judgment as to the constitutionality of the
laws. The Supreme Court, as a
“neutral” party relative to the legislative and executive branches was the
logical arbiter.

Regardless of the claims of the
anti-constitutionalists, Marbury v. Madison did not give the court the right or
power to change the original meaning of the Constitution. That was only to be
done through the amendment process contained within the Constitution
itself.

At issue in Marbury v. Madison
was the jurisdiction of the court itself.
The Congress had attempted to change the court’s jurisdiction between
“original” and “appellate” as spelled out in Article III of the Constitution and
clarified in the eleventh amendment. In striking down that statute, the court
said to allow Congress to make those changes would, “make a mockery of the
Constitution.” The decision also
reaffirmed the Congress’ power to regulate and make exceptions to the court’s
appellate powers found in that same clause in Article III.

The Constitution’s restrictions
on the powers of the Executive and Congress did not sit well with many of the
financial elite and aristocracy in the country. An ultimately successful
campaign was begun to convince the American public that it was more important
for the courts to arrive at a “fair” result rather than follow the
technicalities of a document that was “out of date” soon after its adoption.

It was argued that courts
(especially the Supreme Court) should consider the Constitution as a “living”
document that would change with societal needs through time. They claimed the
amending process within the Constitution itself was too cumbersome and the job
of keeping the Constitution “up to date” belongs with the courts.

This
necessarily required the courts to decide what was “fair” and then find some
rationale to support those decisions. Through time this concept of a “living
Constitution” was accepted in law schools and primarily through appointments by
FDR became the predominant philosophy of the Supreme Court. It has prevailed
ever since then through successive judicial appointments by all presidents
following FDR.

No longer
would the intent of the founding fathers and the states that ratified the
Constitution to limit the power of the United States (central government) be
observed. The guiding principle was to be the “fairness” of the judicial
pronouncements.

At that point
we ceased being a constitutional republic governed by law, and moved toward a
“democracy” where the majority could vote away the rights (protected by the
Constitution) of minorities. Of course the problem was, and is, that the only
votes that count are those of the nine members of the Supreme Court.

One of the main vehicles for implementing
the living Constitution by the courts has been the bastardization of what is
known as the Commerce Clause. The framers gave the federal government the power
to regulate “interstate commerce.” The intent was to keep the several states
from imposing tariffs on goods coming in from another state, thus making the
country one large “free trade” area.

The courts
have reinterpreted that clause to mean the federal government can control every
facet of goods that have crossed a state boundary including how it is used, or
prohibiting its use, by the owner

One of the
earlier travesties resulting from this “interpretation” was a case where the
court ruled an elevator operator in the Empire State building was involved in
“interstate

THE “SELECTED” PRESIDENT?

Some may consider this article a
defense of President Bush and the Supreme Court of the United States (SCOTUS).
It is not. It is a defense of the U.S. Constitution, which appears to be on its
deathbed.

In August of 2000, this writer
opined on the Free Republic website that Gore would be the lesser of two evils
in voting for president. The rationale for that statement was that we know where
Gore wants to take the country (total control by the federal government) and
although Bush has the same goal, he would encounter little opposition from
Republicans because he was perceived as a “conservative.”

The flaming was immediate and
vicious. To this day, little criticism of Republicans is allowed on that website
supposedly dedicated to the constitution and freedom.

For years the author has been
railing against the concept of a “living constitution” which can be
“reinterpreted” without amending it, in order to reach a “desirable” result. No
such power has been granted to the courts (including the SCOTUS).
It has been usurped. The
implied power in the supremacy clause is for the court to APPLY the constitution
to the laws (statutes) to determine if they comply with the original intent and
meaning of the constitution as amended.

So brainwashed and dumbed down as
to the meaning of the constitution is the public that the congress, executive
and courts have been able to convince them that emergency powers are not subject
to the original constraints of the constitution.

When the court, in one of its
rare instances, follows the original meaning and intent, the decision is met
with derision and contempt. Such was the case in the decision that decided the
presidency in the year 2000.

In the Florida 2000 case the
court held (correctly in a minority concurring opinion) that the provision in
Article II, Section 1 of the U.S. Constitution (Each State shall appoint
in such Manner as the Legislature thereof may direct, a Number of
Electors, equal to the whole Number of Senators and Representatives to which the
State may be entitled in the Congress:) meant the legislature and not the state
government which would have included the courts and executive. Theruling
therefore said the attempt by the State Supreme Court to change the deadlines
established by the legislature was unconstitutional. This was a part of the
decsion that halted the recount holding that recounting votes in only four
counties violated the equal protection clause in the Constitution because all
counties (or none) should be recounted. With that decision, the court handed the
presidency to Bush by a 7-2
vote.

The 5-4 vote was on the question
of which of two deadlines (established by the legislature) should be honored.
The question was moot anyway since both deadlines had passed.

The canard that Bush was
"selected" by a 5-4 vote of "conservatives" is just that, a lie. It was the 7-2
vote that gave Bush Florida’s electoral votes and the presidency.

However, when the exact same
issue was presented to the U.S. Supreme Court in the New Jersey case this year,
the court refused to hear an appeal, in effect upholding the ruling of the State
Supreme Court that it had the authority to override the state law established by
the legislature in the interest of "fairness."

Although a different section of
the constitution was involved (senators not presidents), the issue was
identical. Article I, Section 4 reads:
“The Times, Places and Manner of
holding Elections for Senators and Representatives, shall be prescribed in
each State by the Legislature thereof, but the Congress may at any time
by Law make or alter such Regulations, except as to the Places of chusing
Senators.” (The exception for senators was because at that time, before adoption
of the seventeenth amendment, they were chosen by the state legislatures.)

What does all this prove about
the SCOTUS? Only that it will use
original intent when it suits its purpose and ignore or trash the constitution
when it doesn’t.

The derisive use of such
expressions as, “the selected president’ and “resident Bush” reflect only on
those who use them and mock the Constitution and the Office of the President,
not the person himself.

Double Standards and Curious Silences
Amnesty International: A False Beacon?
By PAUL de ROOIJ

Given the current escalation of Israeli depredations in Gaza and the daily US bombings of Falluja, it is interesting to examine Amnesty International's (AI) statements on the situation. AI is widely viewed as an authority on human rights issues, and thus it is of interest to analyze its output on these recent events. Careful scrutiny of AI's record reveals that, its typical response to the daily obscene deeds by either Israeli or US armies is a few barely audible ruminations with an occasional lame rebuke. The impotence of these responses raises many questions.

Occupation with human rights?
Consider the title of a recent press release: "Israeli army must respect human rights in its operations" [1]. According to AI, the Israeli depredations on occupied land are acceptable as long as they "respect" human rights. This is analogous to recommending that a rapist should practice safe sex [2]. It is also difficult to imagine that a military occupation could ever be imposed while observing "human rights".

Consider the context. During September 2004 the Israeli army killed on average 3.7 Palestinians per day; it injured an average of 19.3 p/day; it demolished many houses affecting the lives of thousands; it has transformed vast areas of Gaza into a denuded moonscape. It is also clear that these gruesome statistics will be worse in October. The Israeli Defense Minister Shaul Mofaz openly states that the Palestinians should be punished, and the measures advocated entail collective punishment. The entire Palestinian population is taken hostage; pressure is exerted on them as a whole. Ethnic Cleansing is on going, and the construction of the grotesque wall stands as proof of the criminality of this policy.

Given the devastation inflicted by the Israeli army and clear violations of international law, one would expect at least a tiny condemnation. However, this is the extent of AI's reaction:

"[AI] is concerned that the Israeli army's use of excessive force in this latest incursion in the Gaza Strip will result in further loss of lives and wanton destruction of Palestinian homes and property. Reprisals against protected persons and property are prohibited by the Fourth Geneva Convention and Israel is obliged to ensure that any measures taken to protect the lives of Israeli civilians are consistent with its obligations to respect human rights and international humanitarian law.

Israel should immediately allow international human rights and humanitarian organizations to enter the Gaza Strip. At present [AI] delegates and staff members of other international organizations are denied access to the Gaza Strip."

Note that this lame statement was uttered in reaction to the attack on Jabalya, an onslaught which Dr. Mustafa Barghouti described as follows: "Sharon's tanks are rampaging through Jabalia and Beit Lahia, just as they did in Khan Yunis, Rafah and Beit Hanun. The simple fact is that Sharon is doing to Gaza what he did to the West Bank in 2002." [3] AI's hypocrisy in issuing this limp statement is evident when it is compared with the press release analyzed below.

Double Standard?
In May 2004 AI issued a press release headed "AI condemns murder of woman and her four daughters by Palestinian gunmen." The body of the text contains the following condemnation:

"Such deliberate attacks against civilians, which have been widespread, systematic and in furtherance of a stated policy to attack the civilian population, constitute crimes against humanity, as defined by Article 7 (1) and (2)(a) of the 1998 Rome Statute of the International Criminal."[4]

COINTELPRO 9.11 - Part III:
KHASHOGGI, CULTS, COVER-UPS & MARS AND VENUS DOING LUNCH
Today's disinformation offensive in support of the 9.11 cover-up is not the first time Americans have been asked to “see the flash."
It began one evening in November 1996, when the Art Bell program received a call from Chuck Schramek, an amateur astronomer from Houston, who said he’d been "imaging" the Hale Bopp comet with his telescope and camera, and had taken a photo of what appeared to be another body close to the comet with a "ring like" form.
Schramek called it a "Saturn Like Object.” And the frenzy began.
Like the attack itself, the story of the secret network involved in the 9/11 cover-up sprawls across the widest canvas imaginable.
“It involves a fugitive arms dealer, two convicted drug dealers (one reportedly murdered by a Colombian cocaine hit squad), the CIA, and golden oldie (operatives) from the Iran/Contra scandal,” wrote business journalist extraordinaire Christopher Byron in an article about Genesis Intermdia called “Kiosks, Cocaine, and Khashoggi.”
It's a succinct summation, and we’d be tempted to let it stand, except to mention the Power Hour, the Solar Temple, the Heaven’s Gate cult, and dozens and dozens of shell corporations and dummy front companies controlled by Adnan Khashoggi... and a member of the Rockefeller Family.

Beware the 'Peak Oil' Agenda
www.davesweb.cnchost.com/nwsltr70.html

[Due to recent developments in the 'Peak Oil' scam, I decided to
put Act III of the new September 11 series on hold for a couple weeks.]

It has become apparent that many people have misinterpreted my
'Peak Oil' rants. I know this because I get e-mail with messages like,
thanks for giving me hope, and thanks for changing my view of the
future. I am sorry to have to report here that the newfound optimism of
some of my readers is entirely unwarranted. After reviewing my past
writings, I realize that the fault for this misunderstanding lies with
me, since I haven't done a very good job of articulating exactly what my
position is.

This, my friends, is the harsh reality, so pay very close
attention: the fact that 'Peak Oil' is an entirely manufactured
construct does not mean that the doomsday scenarios painted by the
'Peak' crowd will therefore not become our new reality. This is not just
another scam to further pad the pockets of the oil industry and other
financial elites. The stakes are much higher than that. Much higher.

In order to clarify my position on 'Peak Oil,' it would be
instructive to briefly review the areas of agreement, and the areas of
disagreement, that I have with those who are selling the scam.

The Peakers claim that 'Peak Oil' is the single most important
issue that we are facing today. I agree with that assessment (but not
because 'Peak Oil' is a valid concept).

The Peakers claim that much of America's military might has been
directed in recent years at conquering the key oil and gas producing
regions of the world. And that is obviously quite true. Central Asia and
Iraq have been seized, Venezuela has suffered through constant meddling
by the CIA, the Sudan has been targeted for a future assault, and Saudi
Arabia and Iran have been subjected to saber rattling.

But the Peakers also claim that these military ventures have
been motivated by America's desire to seize what will soon be the last
drops of the world's precious reserves of oil -- and that is entirely
untrue.

The Peakers claim that we will very soon be facing a world where
chaos reigns supreme -- a world of war, famine and death on a scale
unknown in recorded human history. And that does, in fact, appear to be
the case. And we're not talking about the distant future here, folks;
we're talking about the very near future.

But the Peakers also claim that this global die off will be a
regrettable, but quite natural, and entirely unavoidable, consequence of
the world's oil taps running dry. And that is the really big lie. That
is the lie that will very soon be used to rationalize the killing off of
hundreds of millions, possibly billions, of the world's people. There
are, you see, simply too many people in the world who, by merely being
alive, are standing in the way of the aspirations of the global elite.

The people that the 'Peak Oil' pitchmen are fronting for are
deadly serious about selling 'Peak Oil' to the masses -- and not just in
theoretical terms, as a cynical ploy to raise prices and increase
profits. No, it has become clear that the real goal is to actually cut
off most of the world's oil supplies under the ruse that the oil simply
no longer exists. The desired result is massive social unrest,
widespread famine, and endless war. The majority of the world's people
will not survive. Those that do will find

[CTRL] Jewish state fears world isolation

2004-10-14 Thread flw2

THE TELEGRAPH
Jewish state fears world isolation
By Inigo Gilmore in Jerusalem
(Filed: 15/10/2004)

An internal report prepared by Israel's foreign ministry paints a gloomy picture
for the future of the country's global standing, giving warning that in the
coming decade it could suffer the pariah status of South Africa under apartheid.

The document, written in August and leaked this week, suggests that Israel and
Europe will find themselves on a collision course that will cause serious
economic and diplomatic damage to Israel.

It describes a scenario in which an increasingly influential European Union,
with a widening membership, may seek to isolate Israel, even if it still has
strong backing from America.

In extreme circumstances this could put Israel on a collision course with the
EU, the report says. Such a collision course holds the risk of Israel losing
international legitimacy and could lead to its isolation, in the manner of South
Africa.

The EU could sharpen its expectation that Israel comply with international
norms and honour the authority of the United Nations and its agencies - an issue
that has the potential of leading to friction.

EU officials have recently been highly critical of Israel's construction of a
so-called security barrier in the West Bank and its bloody incursions into Gaza.
This is at odds with US backing from the most pro-Israel administration in more
than a generation.

Foreign ministry officials are concerned that the pendulum may swing against
Israel as the EU pushes to become a global player at the expense of America,
Israel's main ally.

The fear is that in light of continuing criticism of its policies a more
powerful Europe could weaken Israel's position.

The report also raises the prospect of a rise of a new form of anti-Semitism in
Europe, which would question Israel's legitimacy as a sovereign Jewish state.

In November last year, in response to a European Commission survey, the Israeli
foreign ministry described Israel's image as having fallen to an all-time low.
It said Israel was seen as an aggressive country, with policies dictated by a
small group of militant settlers.

There was uproar in Israel when the European Commission found that 59 per cent
of Europeans thought Israel was a greater threat to world peace than North
Korea, Iran or Afghanistan.
