But the subsequent damage control has spoken volumes about the way top professional athletes have become little more than corporations with muscle tone, with images to be protected at all costs, their mental health a distant concern. Attempting suicide is the ultimate cry for help. Yet in the world of jock culture, vulnerability equals weakness. Our superheroes aren't supposed to be lonely, depressed or absent hope. The mere hint that Owens might wrestle with suicidal tendencies damages the brand of Owens Inc. It's like finding out that your PC has a virus, or that there's E. coli at your favorite fast-food place. And, like at a corporation, public outcry about the event became a PR crisis to manage. It was Owens' flack, Kim Etheredge, who called 911, told police the star wide receiver was depressed and tried to pry two of the pain pills out of his mouth. Then she began spinning. Less than 24 hours later, Etheredge was on camera soldiering for Owens Inc., saying a leaked police report was a fabrication and that Terrell has 25 million reasons to be alive. I'm still stunned by the ugliness of that statement. Twenty-five million is how many dollars Owens will be paid over the life of his three-year contract with the Cowboys. For Etheredge, Owens' life must be worth no more than his pay scale. Presumably, if cut from the team, his reasons to be alive would dwindle to nothing. Owens followed Etheredge at the news conference by stating explicitly, and with a sideways smirk, I am not depressed. In the stunted, backward world of jock culture, it is better to be seen as a dosage-miscalculating carnival distraction than someone burdened with the shame of depression. As the self-described recovering sportswriter Robert Lipsyte wrote recently on tomsdispatch.com, Athletes have been taught to appear invulnerable, to repress emotion, to never, ever let 'em see you sweat, much less show panic or pain. This is why for so many pro athletes, with their shallow marriages, false friendships and dysfunctional family relationships, the only places where true emotion can freely emerge are the locker room and the playing field. There, they can finally hug and cry. For many, these are the only times they feel truly alive, and one can understand how they might be tempted to do anything to stay in the arena, including drugs. The stats back this up. As many as 80% of marriages involving male professional athletes end in divorce. Out-of-wedlock births are seen as so epidemic that rookies are given seminars on how to avoid being trapped. Players feel paranoid, preyed upon and under the gun. Literally. Carrying a weapon is now so common that firearms guidelines are part of the NBA's collective bargaining agreement. For the athlete, this is a nation of enemies. The mantra becomes: separate, insulate and isolate. Gated communities and anabolic masses of bodyguards seal them off from all nonsexual human contact. But little is done to help players deal with the pressures that create this siege mentality. The message seems to be that pot, paternity suits and pistols are preferable to Prozac. Long gone are the days when Willie Mays played stickball with neighborhood kids. Back then, being an athlete wasn't automatically a ticket to another universe. And this ticket is being dangled earlier every year. As a fourth-grade teacher in Washington public schools, I saw what happened to the talented kids recruited to play in after-school leagues. They sported fancy uniforms, new shoes and other bells and whistles their parents couldn't possibly have afforded. For the majority of kids, however, we didn't even have P.E., a budget casualty in the age of standardized tests. The message was clear: Some are special; others are not even worthy of dodgeball. But even the special ones became stunted by the experience. Most don't make it, and many who do see their dreams turn into nightmares. And as we've seen with T.O, nightmares are a luxury the corporation cannot abide. The remarks prompted federal Attorney General Daniel Cabeza de Vaca to state that there was no evidence of guerilla involvement in the civil struggle in Oaxaca. (El Universal, Aug. 24)A particularly atrocious story in the New York Times Aug. 24 was entitled "Violent Civil Unrest Tightens Hold on a Mexican City." Yet the story itself noted that the only "violence" attributed to the protesters is the burning of a few buses, while there have now been two confirmed deaths of protesters at the hands of the security forces and unaccountable pro-government gunmen, rumors of three more in the attempted police eviction of the protest encampments June 14, and (by APPO's count) 35 political killings statewide since the protests began. The story ends with a quote from the president of the hotel owners' association complaining about how the protests have devastated the tourism industry -- as if this was the most grave problem facing the state. This has been only the second full story the Times has run on the Oaxaca crisis. The smuggling business has been tied to Coggins Farm Supply of Lake Park, a town eight miles from Valdosta. The firm's owner, Kevin Coggins, is a major player in the Georgia Republican Party and a major funder of Senator Saxby Chambliss and George W. Bush. There are also connections between the people smugglers and Pacific Tomato Growers of Palmetto, Florida and California. Pacific Growers has been a champion of Jeb Bush's questionable migrant farmer's program as well as George W. Bush's Federal AgJobs Bill, which fail to crack down on growers who use illegal aliens. (Letters to the Editor, St. Petersburg Times, March 31, 2004). Some of the illegal immigrants, apprehended by "coyotes" (agents) in Mexico, Guatemala, China, Afghanistan, and Pakistan, work on Coggins farms. Others, especially young girls and boys, are pimped to customers by local businessmen in Valdosta, including the owner of a local strip club. Couey was a patron of the strip club and paid $300 for sex with young Mexican girls. Valdosta has become a virtual haven for sex offenders, according to law enforcement sources. Law enforcement sources also report a connection between the smuggling ring and the Russian-Israeli Mafia. One State of Florida investigation into the ring, as well as two Federal investigations and a Grand Jury probe, were shut down on orders from the Bush White House. The immigrant smugglers use "nickelmen" to illegally provide workers with phony Social Security Numbers. One such nickelman provided a false SSN to Chinese spy Henry Ni, who was arrested in Orlando for trying to ship missile parts to China. Ni was also a computer programmer for Yang Enterprises, an Oviedo, Florida-based firm that was investigated for overcharging the Florida Department of Transportation and NASA. Yang's general counsel and registered lobbyist was Tom Feeney, Jeb Bush's running mate in 1994, ex-Speaker of the Florida House of Representatives who heped deliver Florida to Bush in 2000, and current U.S. Congressman who sits on the House Judiciary Committee. Florida investigator Raymond Lemme was investigating the illegal alien importation, contract fraud, and other corruption when he was found dead from a suspicious suicide in a Valdosta Knight's Inn motel in July 2003. They may only have known she was CIA.And who's the expert who pushes this angle?Victoria Toensing...Allen calls Toensing a "legal expert" and "the chief counsel of the Senate Select Committee on Intelligence when Congress passed the law protecting the identities of undercover agents."But that's a rather incomplete description, now isn't it?Toensing, of course, is not only a pricey DC defense lawyer. She's also a professional Republican, one tightly connected to the DC GOP power structure, and someone you could find at pretty much any point in the late nineties as an anti-Clinton "legal expert" on every chat show under the sun.Using Toensing as the legal expert on this question is like bringing Bruce Lindsey in as your commentator to discuss Lewinsky.Now for the substance of what Toensing said.Toensing says this may not have been a crime because the perps may not have known Plame was undercover.But this isn't really a reason why this wasn't a crime. It's more properly termed the logical defense at trial or perhaps in a plea negotiation. It may well be impossible to prove the perps' knowledge beyond a reasonable doubt. But it's very hard to believe, for a number of reasons, they didn't know exactly what she did.Here's just one of the many reasons why.Allen writes ... The July column by Robert D. Novak that touched off the investigation did not specify that Valerie Plame was working undercover, but said she was "an agency operative on weapons of mass destruction." That raises the possibility that the senior administration officials he quoted did not know Plame's status. This rather misses the point.In the intelligence community, the word 'operative' is a term of art. And it means someone who is undercover. It doesn't refer to an analyst. And as I showed in this post from October 9th a review of all of Novak's columns in the Nexis database shows that he always use the term in this way...And one other point.Back on October 9th and 10th I told you that Scott McClellan's denials that Rove, Libby and Abrams were the perps wasn't nearly as air-tight as they seemed, that it was basically a non-denial denial. But no one seemed to catch on.Now they're coming clean. Again, from Mike Allen's piece in the Post ...
