All that matters is that you line up as an ally in the drug war, the only international cause that this nation still takes seriously. That's the message sent with the recent gift of $43 million to the Taliban rulers of Afghanistan, the most virulent anti-American violators of human rights in the world today. The war on drugs has become our own fanatics' obsession and easily trumps all other concerns. How else could we come to reward the Taliban, who has subjected the female half of the Afghan population to a continual reign of terror in a country once considered enlightened in its treatment of women? At no point in modern history have women and girls been more systematically abused than in Afghanistan where, in the name of madness masquerading as Islam, the government in Kabul obliterates their fundamental human rights. Women may not appear in public without being covered from head to toe with the oppressive shroud called the burkha , and they may not leave the house without being accompanied by a male family member. They've not been permitted to attend school or be treated by male doctors, yet women have been banned from practicing medicine or any profession for that matter. The lot of males is better if they blindly accept the laws of an extreme religious theocracy that prescribes strict rules governing all behavior, from a ban on shaving to what crops may be grown. It is this last power that has captured the enthusiasm of the Bush White House. The Taliban fanatics, economically and diplomatically isolated, are at the breaking point, and so, in return for a pittance of legitimacy and cash from the Bush administration, they have been willing to appear to reverse themselves on the growing of opium. The military has just said they'll shoot down any plane they see flying. Only one civilian plane is in the air this morning, Air Force One; that's as grim a warning of things to come as I can think of. Collateral deaths won't just happen as a consequence, say, of somebody with a heart attack being unable to get to a hospital, but whenever and wherever some dumb kid in an army uniform gets startled by a car backfiring and starts spraying everybody and his pet poodle with automatic rifle fire. Or to whomever the martial lawyers decide it's safe to liquidate using this foul mess as a cover. Or, vastly more ominously, to people in the not-so-distant future who decide they must resist the police state that will inevitably result from these events. It's extremely difficult to think coherently about long term effects, let alone to get it all down in writing, when you learn that, not only were hijacked commercial aircraft used to commit these unspeakably evil acts, but that 90 passengers died helplessly in the first plane, and others yet unnumbered may have died in subsequent attacks. _Somebody_ has to think about it, though, or this situation will be used to turn the Bill of Rights off forever. Depending on the planning behind it, or who did the planning, it may already be too late. All airports have been shut down today, and I shudder to think about what flying will be like from now on. The Clintons, Schumers, and Waxmans will try to shut down the Internet, calling it a breeding ground for terrorism. The Bushes and Cheneys will reluctantly go along. Rush Limbaugh will cheer them on. What should those who value their freedom do? Every chance you have, from this moment on, whether it's on talk radio, or on the letters to the editor page, on the Internet while it's still possible, or in communication with everyone you know -- it's time for even the most apolitical to write to senators and congressmen -- emphasize two points: First, inform them that closing down the First or Second or any other Amendment is not an appropriate response to what's happened, and that any politician or bureaucrat in office who attempts to capitalize on today's horrors is committing the same sort of blatantly criminal act I've always insisted must be punished under Bill of Rights enforcement. Second, these things happen to nations with imperial ambitions. There has never been a major act of terrorism I know of that hasn't resulted from an act of government that violated somebody's rights. The way to keep this sort of thing from happening again is to stop those violations. Hideously enough, my new novel _The American Zone_, scheduled to be published next November by Tor Books, begins with an act very similar to this one, carried out to force the creation of a strong central government in the governmentless North American Confederacy that figures in so many of my books. The Maine Bombing, 1898: February 15, 1898, an explosion destroyed the American battleship Maine in Havana Harbor and helped propel the United States into a war with Spain. Along the pier, passersby could hear a rumbling explosion. Within seconds, another eruption--this one deafening and massive--splintered the bow, sending anything that wasn't battened down, and most that was, flying more than 200 feet into the air In all, 266 of the 350 men aboard the Maine were killed. The American press was quick to point to an external explosion--a mine or torpedo--as the cause of the tragedy. An official U.S. investigation agreed. She was used to ferry goods and people between England and the United States. The Lusitania was very popular because of her speed and luxurious accommodations. She was considered the acme of comfort, and deemed a floating palace by her passengers (Simpson 7). As World War I escalated and German submarines took a prevalent role in the seas; Lusitania set out from New York on May 1, 1915, with the intent of delivering material to England in spite of threats of sinking by German authorities. Six days later, on May 7, 1915, the Lusitania took a solid hit whose sound was described by passengers as a peal of thunder, a dull thud-like sound, or like a million-ton hammer hitting a steel boiler a hundred feet high and a hundred feet long (Hickey and Smith 184-185). Though they did not explode, water rushed into the first and second boiler rooms and caused the boat to shake from side to side. She then rose a little before a second massive explosion took her down into the sea. The exact cause of the second explosion is a point of contention. The Lusitania shows evidence that she may have been torpedoed a second or even a third time - but the second, most destructive, explosion may not have been caused by a German torpedo, but rather may have come from inside the ship. The reason behind this speculation is that the Lusitania's cargo can be called into question. She had originally said she would take, along with her passengers, platinum, bullion, diamonds and various other precious stones, but these things were never found and port records do not list them either. It's a crude attempt by the powers that be to divide farmers and environmentalists, just as if the farmers themselves wer not environmentalists by definition. Who on earth, besides perhaps sportsmen, care more about the state of the environment than the people who make their living from it? In fact, the farmers of Klamath are among the most radical environmentalists there are today. They have taken direct action against the powers that be, who are actively destroying their environment, and with it their livelihoods. Surely you do not lump them in with Earth First? -Caveat Lector- Sunday Silence By Russell Mokhiber and Robert Weissman Washington, D.C. politics revolve around issues related to corporate power -- from trade agreements to the minimum wage, from environmental protection to antitrust enforcement. It stands to reason that conversations about politics in Washington naturally touch on these corporate power concerns, though of course many discussants may not talk about them in terms of corporate power. Or at least that is what would seem to be natural. In the case of the Sunday morning political talk shows, however, it turns out that exactly the opposite is the case. The environment, labor rights, corporate welfare, the corporate crime epidemic and victims' right to sue corporate bullies go virtually unmentioned on the Sunday talk shows. A new report issued by our colleagues Justin Elga and George Farah finds that topics loosely related to corporate power make up only 4 percent of the discussion topics on the talk shows. [see http://www.essentialaction.org/spotlight/report/index.html] Elga and Farah's conclusions are based on a review of every transcript of Meet the Press, Face the Nation, The Mclaughlin Group, and This Week aired between June 1995 and June 1996 and during the last six months of 1999. The report also highlights the shows' near total exclusion of newsmaker guests from the ranks of labor, environmental, consumer, anti-corporate globalization or other public interest groups. The shows' almost exclusive preference is for presidential candidates, high administration officials or Congressional leaders -- though former Christian Coalition leader Ralph Reed was a frequent guest when he headed that right-wing lobby. Horserace politics dominates the political gabfests, with corporate power shunted to the sidelines. Elga and Farah's juxtapositions of what was and was not discussed on the shows are particularly revealing: During the June 1995 - June 1996 period, they note, Colin Powell was the topic of Sunday morning conversation 47 times, corporate crime 0. Travelgate was an issue 27 times, whereas corporate welfare was mentioned once in a list of Clinton's accomplishments. The shows discussed O.J. Simpson 16 times, environmental matters 0. They talked about the Christian right 9 times, but never about consumer issues such as bank charges, phone charges, HMO abuses. ... Roundtable pundits argued about Oliver Stone's Nixon on 2 occasions but never discussed renewable energy, redlining or blockbusting. The shows never even mentioned the World Bank, the International Monetary Fund, or foreign aid, but one show made the weather, complete with a guest from the National Weather Service, the center of discussion. Only a single program, This Week, so much as discussed the telecommunications bill and media mergers, which relate closely to the owners of these Sunday programs. In the first six months of 1999, they report, Aside from the McCain-Feingold campaign finance reform bill, the most discussed issue concerning corporate power was HMOs and a Patient Bill of Rights, ranked 26, well after Ken Starr, the Middle East peace process, the controversial Brooklyn art exhibit, Egypt Air Flight 990 and Jesse Ventura. The only other issues concerning corporate power discussed during the second half of 1999 were free trade with China and the Microsoft antitrust case. The Mclaughlin Group also devoted a segment of a single episode to urban sprawl. Instead of addressing consumer issues, environmental matters, corporate crime, the IMF, the WTO, labor rights or the minimum wage, shows devoted time to topics like the women's World Cup soccer victory, a moon landing tribute, Jerry Springer's possible senatorial campaign, a heat wave, Tina Brown's kickoff party for Talk Magazine, mail order brides, father's day, and football player Reggie White's religious views. Elga and Farah don't have an answer for why this state of affairs is so, but they permit themselves some speculation. Is it possible, they ask, that the silence on corporate power issues is related to the shows' sponsorship by the likes of General Electric and Archer Daniels Midland (ADM)? The shows' failed to mention -- let alone discuss -- that in 1996 ADM pled guilty to criminal price-fixing charges and agreed to what was at the time the largest antitrust fine ever. The ADM plea made banner headlines in the print press. Did the company's close ties to the Sunday shows have anything to do with their silence? Is the Mclaughlin Group really likely to talk critically about GE -- say, about the company's controversial effort to block cleanup of the Hudson River of toxic PCBs -- given General Electric's sponsorship? On the whole, the Sunday shows are excruciating to watch. They are full of bombast and self-interested posturing. They are the stuff of self-parody. Their national ratings are miniscule. But the talk shows are watched by journalists and policymakers in Washington, and they work to frame news

The ideal situation would be to develop an alternative fuel that gave the efficiency, or what would be even better, better efficency than the present gasoline. You're assuming the same cost per gallon. Alcohol can be produced for far, far less than gasoline. Plus, its renewable. There's also the hidden costs of gasoline that must be considered, such as cost of the death, disease and distraction that the pollution it makes. Then there's the enormous expense of maintaining the military capacity to protect gasolines foreign sources. Then there's the people who suffer and die in the wars that are fought over oil. The blockade of Iraq, for example, has killed at least a half million, probably more like two million, Iraqis. Almost all of them were women and children. The regime is trying desperately to defuse the conflicts by giving in to the demands of various groups one at a time. It is expecting to keep its essential policies in effect. The exploited have no confidence in the government's promises or in the church's call to the producing population for social peace. Acquired experience and ingrained awareness have prepared the workers to be more and more determined to fight every aspect of bourgeois capitalist imperialist policy and ready to seek a revolutionary solution to their problems. Direct action is the order of the day in Bolivia, but the media remain ignorant and silent about the events. This contrasts with the solidarity being shown by others in struggle. On July 11 the CNT in Madrid will protest at the Bolivian embassy, as will the Fédération Anarchiste Française (French Anarchist Federation) and Alternative Libertaire (Anarchist Alternative) in Paris. HIGHWAY BLOCKADES: TROOPS AND TANKS POSITIONED ON THE HIGHWAY FROM LA PAZ TO THE ALTIPLANO REGION Bolivian Army tanks have been positioned along the highways connecting La Paz and the Altiplano. Yesterday they entered the village of Achacachi. When Aymará farmers went into army headquarters they found troops on alert and waiting for orders to attack. During September, 2000, the military carried out a massacre of villagers in the same place. In these arid regions there has been an atmosphere of open war for the past two weeks, with Aymara farmers blocking roads and basically demanding land and an end to neoliberalism. A week ago the army occupied the region and murdered two farmers in the process. An emergency assembly of all Bolivian farmers has been called for July 9, at which an analysis will be made of the effectiveness of the partial road blockages up to now and decisions made about how to move forward. In Huarina one woman farmer explained that there is a state of tension in the area because soldiers are constantly watching the roads, demanding identification papers and recording information about people walking along the roads, or even crossing them. In Achacachi the farmers have indicated that they are ready to continue the blockades for 90 days. Until now there have been no shortages because food supplies were arranged for before the blockades began. The government claims to want dialog, but the farmers denounce this as phony. They point to the many arrests, and a massive presence of assault vehicles, tanks and troops armed with battle weapons. We will develop a new strategy that will prevent a military reaction. We will create new ways to struggle and be heard, said Filipe Quispe, general secretary of the farmers' confederation. We are just watching. The soldiers have been pointing their machine guns at the farmers. They took over the schools in Huarina and Guaqui and arrested the leaders, he added. The army is expecting orders to arrest all union leaders. ARMED MINERS OCCUPY MINES More than a hundred infuriated sulfur miners armed with dynamite entered the TH-1 mine, located near the Bolivian town of Abaroa, five kilometers from the Chilean border. One of the protesters, 25-year-old Misael Mamani Choque, lost his right arm when he moved a load of dynamite. There have been many injuries and the police have called for reinforcements. We don't have any more information about this, but, the police make it appear as a conflict between individuals. PRISONERS ARE FREED WHILE REPRESSION IS PREPARED On Monday, July 2, hundreds of small debtors occupied a bank building armed with dynamite, gasoline and Molotovs, and detained 60 bureaucrats. They called for total cancellation of their debts and accused the bank of usury. The participation of anarchist feminists was essential to the development of these events. Negotiations led to release of the people held, and protesters left the building. This resulted in cancellation of agreements the government made which enabled it to take in around 70 activists. Apparently the street demonstrations led to this. But the government is preparing a legal gimmick to imprison more activists. This is grade school mathematics here. Whats your problem? Didnt you go to grade school? OK, lets try a simple analogy. This is like pruning an apple tree to produce more apples. If you dont prune the tree, you get 100 apples per tree. Each apple has 10 seeds. So you get 1000 seeds per tree. If you prune the tree, you get 200 apples per tree. Each apple still has 10 seeds each. But the tree has 2000 seeds. The concentration of seeds per apple has not increased. The number of seeds per tree has increased. Some kinds of apple tree have 5 seeds per apple. Some kinds of apple tee has 15 seeds per apple. But the equation remains the same. Grow twice as many apples per tree and you get twice as many seeds per tree. Simple, huh? NOW, do you get it? With genetic engineering, one day people will be growing one huge calyx that looks like a cactus :) You dont need genetic engineering to do this.
