Re: [CTRL] Misguided Theology Makes Bad Foreign Policy
-Caveat Lector- In a message dated 6/20/2006 10:48:17 AM Eastern Standard Time, [EMAIL PROTECTED] writes: June 16, 2006 Misguided Theology Makes Bad Foreign Policy Doug Bandow Iraq is an unalloyed disaster. War with Iran would be even worse. Lebanon's Cedar Revolution has empowered groups hostile to America. Where is the new democratic dawn in the Mideast that the administration promised? It certainly isn't represented in the Israeli-Palestinian "peace process." The West Bank is still occupied and Gaza is nearing civil war. Whether peace is possible if the two peoples separate is unknowable. The only worse option is for Israel to maintain a system of militarized apartheid-like rule over millions of Palestinians. Yet some of President George W. Bush's domestic supporters oppose the slightest Israeli concession to the Palestinians. Before the 2004 election, Gary Bauer, one-time presidential candidate and head of American Values, lectured the president: "The land of Israel was originally owned by God. Since He was the owner, only He could give it away. And He gave it to the Jewish people." Actually, God still owns the land of Israel. And that of America, for that matter. But that isn't a reason to oppose the Bush administration's peace plan. Washington's fulsome embrace of Israel has long generated controversy – consider the fevered reaction to the famous (or infamous, depending on your viewpoint) paper by John Mearsheimer of the University of Chicago and Stephen Walt of Harvard on domestic support for Israel. One can argue whether or not there is an "Israel Lobby," but there obviously are lobbies for Israel. That's unexceptional: interest groups have long attempted to influence American foreign policy. Eastern European ethnic groups pushed for NATO expansion, African-Americans lobbied to invade Haiti, ethnic Albanians pushed Washington to attack Serbia. (Sadly, such groups rarely seek peace; most often they want Washington to back their side in war.) What makes support for Israel unique is the fact that part of it, at least, rests on theology. But not primarily Judaism. Even the vast majority of American Jews who support Israel do so more on cultural and ethnic than on religious grounds. It is some American Christians who are attempting to turn the U.S. government into a de facto arm of the church. Most of those who hold such views are evangelicals. Neither Catholics nor mainline Protestants have so heavily rested their spiritual faith on the machinations of a secular state identified with another religion, whose residents largely see themselves in ethnic rather than religious terms. Non-evangelicals are far more likely to perceive the harm to Americans and injustice to others resulting from turning Mideast policy into an aberrant variant of Christian theology. Developing an intelligent solution to the conflict between Israel and the Palestinians is insanely difficult. Moreover, sympathy toward Israel is understandable: there is no excuse for suicide bombings that slaughter and maim. But Washington needs to develop a Mideast policy that advances America's national interests by reducing the likelihood of war involving the U.S. and attacks on Americans – basically staying out. Yet a number of Israel advocates appear to see their support as an outgrowth of their Christian faith. For instance, former Christian Coalition head and candidate for Georgia lieutenant governor Ralph Reed wrote, "[T]here is an undeniable and powerful spiritual connection between Israel and the Christian faith. It is where Jesus was born and where he conducted his ministry." True, but so what? This has nothing to do with the formulation of foreign policy for the secular nation of America, which represents non-Christians as well as Christians. Columnist Maggie Gallagher writes, "[M]y support is based on an inchoate sense that if put into words would be something like this: As Christians, we just cannot sit by and let Islamic nations exterminate the Jewish people." Not that the Arab nations have that capability, but never mind. Should Christians care less about the killing of Christians by Muslims in Kosovo, Indonesia, and Nigeria? Or the killing of Christians and Muslims by Hindus in India? It even sometimes alarms me that the Israeli are occasionally exterminating Christian Palestinians (that forgotten people) along with the Muslim Palestinians, but I guess the rule is killthem all and let God sort them out later. The Army has been slow to adapt its tactics, he argues, and its approach during the early stages of the occupation "exacerbated the task it now faces by alienating significant sections of the population." It has been obvious since the beginning that our military had no idea how to deal with a resident population, and no interest in learning. Re: [CTRL] Kerry Lost, But 'Scandal of Pro-Abortion Catholics' Continues,
-Caveat Lector- In a message dated 11/17/2004 9:00:41 AM Eastern Standard Time, [EMAIL PROTECTED] writes: The American Life League published an ad in Tuesday's Washington Times, warning Catholics that "the scandal of pro-abortion Catholic public figures continues." I know it has become a popular phrase, but nothing so demonstrates ignorance more than the word "pro-abortion." The real word is "pro-choice." There is no one on the planet who could be described as "pro-abortion." Pro-choice means that babies would be done away with prior to birth by women who really did not want the child, not birthed and then sold for various purposes, thrown out of third-floor windows to see ifit bounces; or left in the care of creeps called "boyfriends" by crack addicted prostitutes. Pro-abortion actually has no meaning. It's not that abortion should not be defined as murder. I wouldn't argue that, although blaming the medical professionals who provide the service makes as much sense as blaming a dairy farmer for your lactose intolerance. It's all on the soul of the mommy or the daddy. I've yet to hear of a medical professional dragging a woman kicking and screaming into his or her office to abort a fetus. If every Catholic refuses to have an abortion, I think that'swonderful. That would do more to keep abortions down than all the marching and protesting could evereffect. I've only known two women in myover seventy years who had abortions. One was Catholic and one was a Moslem. Neither woman wanted the abortion, but their respective husbands insisted on it. The Catholic threateneddivorce if she did notdo as he wanted. And one of the most vehement protestors I've ever known of marched and yelled at women going into clinics, yet his teenaged daughter had three abortions. It would be nice ifall the folks just worried about their own and their family's abortions. That should cut the rate down so drasticallyeveryone coulduntwist their panties and go home. I recall a conversation with a cousin in Florida who mentioned that her neighbor was out marching in protest at some abortion clinic (I'm not sure the clinic was even in Florida), but he was protesting as loudly as possible. "Well," I said. "He has a right to his convictions." "Oh sure," she replied, "but his 16-year-old daughter has had three abortions." It's pretty typical, I guess. Conservatives aren't worried about their behavior. Apparently they think God only observes the behavior of non-conservatives. It's your abortion, your homosexuality that concerns them. -Caveat Lector- In a message dated 10/20/2004 7:13:29 PM Eastern Standard Time, [EMAIL PROTECTED] writes: How did we reach this danger? When Al Gore dragged Florida's courts into the election process, the U.S. Supreme Court did not make the prudent decision to refuse to be dragged into what Justice Felix Frankfurter called the "political thicket." If the court had allowed Florida's intrastate power struggle to proceed, here is what probably would have happened: Florida's runaway Supreme Court would have done what it seemed determined to do: it would have continued to rewrite the state's election laws and vote-counting rules until they produced a Gore victory. What a shame that would have been. Imagine four more years of relatively high wages and employment; imagine no war in Iraq. Over a thousand of our young people would still be alive, and the thousands of amputees would be whole and hardy. How awful to think that the two Koreas might by now be having cordial relations, and the entire world would not think that the United States had degenerated into a kind of stumbling dictatorship. The Arab world would not think of us as a golem taking care of Israel's light work. We can't allow any of that silly stuff. I think we should let the Supreme Court pick our next president too. Re: [CTRL] More re Israel/What if.....
-Caveat Lector- I for one always thought that would have been a really good idea. At that time there would have been no trouble at all. It would have been right for the reparation money to have gone to the families or descendents of those driven from their homes and businesses. When last I read about the reparations sent to Israel for those who survived the Holocaust, the money was kept by the state. The logic of that escapes me. The story of the impoverished who arrived in New York to live in the tenements, make pickles and encourage their children to succeed in every kind of industry, show business, manufacturing and even crime is matched around this city by the Italians and Polish. They have the same history of mothers and fathers who did everything in their power to ensure their children could become the doctors, lawyers, business owners and crime bosses that was the culture of their time. The Palestinians who believe the land of Israel belongs to them mirror the Native Americans who will be first to tell you that Columbus discovered nothing. Their land had not been lost. They knew exactly where and what it was. Like the land of Israel, the land of the new world was distributed by strange rulers to people from another place. The colonists of the new world took what they wanted and cited the authority of the crowned heads of Europe. The Indians weren't unhappy, but they were finally outgunned and starved into submission. The religious leaders told them their worship was wrong, and the new government gave them blankets (the smallpox germs were also free). The UN wasn't watching, so it was all right. Those who have power never will sharewhat they have. There should be roomfor all, and there could be, but there will never be. Jesus would not find himself welcome in Israel, and I doubt that the Zionist Christians would be really glad to see him either. Re: [CTRL] A Kerry Adviser Leaves the Race Over Missing Documents (NYT)
-Caveat Lector- I really have a hard time getting upset about this matter. When I worked for the Air Force some years ago, I discovered the morning news was classified SECRET, and that while I could listen to it on my way in to work, the message that briefed our commander (and had the same info) was highly classified and had to be kept in the safe. For all I know it was never declassified, and the morning news for years back is resting in safes all over the country. I hate to break it to you but most of the stuff that is classified is about as important as yesterday's garbage. Sometimes I think they do it to bore any possible spies to death. I only remember one time when the mistreatment of classified matter might have been important. Remember when the head of the CIA, one Mr. John Deutch, took every bit of the CIA's classified material and put it on his personal computer at home. I can just hear the bit of conversation..."oh, you should check out my PC. It's really interesting..." I'm sure it was all very useful. So very clever of him. And even after it was all discovered and he was relieved and lost his CIA clearance, his clearance at our Pentagon went on for six months after all that. I've never known ifMossad considers him an operative or just a good friend. Prudy www.ctrl.org DECLARATION DISCLAIMER == CTRL is a discussion informational exchange list. Re: [CTRL] question: Re Northern Alaska
-Caveat Lector- The elk population is increasing in Alaska, because the idiots are shooting the wolves from helicopters so that the tourist hunters will be able to get an elk without having to work hard. As for the oil business coexisting with wild life, it doesn't have to be a problem, but the oil business is run by greedy slobs who do not take care with their procedures or their product. It costs a little money to be sure that everything is done neatly and timed correctly. Look at the mess the pipeline is. Look at the tundra that used to be where it is. Think about it. If a banker put his and your money in a big slide, piped it somewhere and loaded it into ships and tankers without any special care, and some (sometimes a lot) of the money just fell into the water or where ever it happened to be at the time, you'd think he was a moron. Well oil seems to be everywhere doesn't it? Ships that should be scrapped are transporting that precious product everywhere, going aground, and sometimes sinking. Don't worry about having to double hull them to keep from more Exxon disasters. Bush the First made sure that the oil boys didn't have to spend that kind of money in the interest of the environment, and I'm sure that Bush the Second has done lots of kind things for the same oil boys that we don't even know about. Besides it's sour crude. The oil boys aren't really too crazy about theidea of having to refine it. Theyjust want to sell it to Japan. It is very unMoslem to brutalize dead bodies, but if someone was insane with rage due to some weird kind of injury inflicted on their family (perhaps it was the family of the old woman forced to crawl around on the floor and ridden and called donkey), might just bring something like that about. Those American soldiers in Saddam's old prison at Abu Ghraib, those young British squaddies in Basra came -- as soldiers often come -- from towns and cities where race hatred has a home: Tennessee and Lancashire. How many of our lads are ex--jailbirds themselves? How many support the British National Party? Muslims, Arabs, cloth heads, rag heads, terrorists, evil. You can see how the semantics break down. Add to that the poisonous, racial dribble of a hundred Hollywood movies that depict Arabs as dirty, lecherous, untrustworthy and violent people -- and soldiers are addicted to movies -- and it's not difficult to see how some British scumbag will urinate into the face of a hooded man, how some American sadist will stand a hooded Iraqi on a box with wires tied to his hands. The sexual sadism -- the bobby--sox girl soldier who points at a man's genitals, the mock orgy in Abu Ghraib prison, the British rifle in the prisoner's mouth -- might be a crazed attempt to balance all those lies about the Arab world, about the desert warrior's potency, the harem, polygamy. Even today, we still show the revolting Ashanti on our television stations, a feature film about the kidnapping of the wife of an English doctor by Arab slave--traders, which depicts Arabs as almost exclusively child--molesters, rapists, murderers, liars and thieves. It stars -- heaven spare us -- Michael Caine, Omar Sharif and Peter Ustinov and was made partly in Israel. Indeed, we now depict Arabs in our films as the Nazis once depicted Jews. But Arabs are fair game. Potential terrorists to a man -- and a woman -- they must be softened up, prepared, humiliated, beaten, tortured. The Israelis use torture in the Russian Compound in Jerusalem. Now we torture in Saddam's old jail outside Baghdad and -- for this is where British soldiers beat a young Iraqi to death last summer -- in the former office of Saddam's most murderous chemical warfare fascist, the awful Chemical Ali. And the officers? Didn't the British lieutenants and captains and majors in the Queen's Lancashire Regiment know that their lads were kicking to death a young Iraqi hotel worker last summer? That man's fate -- and the documentary evidence proving that he was murdered -- was first revealed by The Independent on Sunday in January. Didn't the CIA boys at Abu Ghraib know that Ivan Chip Frederick and Lynddie England, two of the American soldiers in the photographs published last week, were obscenely humiliating their prisoners? Of course they did. The last time I saw Brigadier General Janis Karpinski, commander of the 800th Military Police Brigade in Iraq, she told me she had visited Camp X--Ray in Guantanamo and found nothing wrong with it. I should have guessed then that something had gone terribly wrong in Iraq. I remember how in Basra, on the eve of a visit by Tony Blair, I visited the British Army's press office in the city to ask about the death of 26--year--old Baha Mousa. The dead man's family had given me British documents proving that he had been beaten to death in custody, that the British Army had itself tried to pay off the family if they would give up any legal claim against the soldiers who so cruelly killed their son. I was met with yawns and a total inability to furnish information about the event. I was told to call the Ministry of Defence in London. The officer I spoke to appeared weary, even impatient about my inquiry. There was not a single word of compassion for the dead man. As a US Army report published by The New Yorker followed revelations by CBS and the allegations by the Daily Mirror, President Bush and Tony Blair must be wondering when it is going to end. It is now clear that not only did they fail to find weapons of mass destruction, but that their fall-back justification for the invasion, that of bringing democracy and human rights to Iraq, is little more than a sham. The abuse, which is described by the US Army report as sadistic, blatant and wanton, includes beatings, rape and serious assaults with chemical lights. To the Middle East, it all provides a stark symbol of subjugation. Whether or not people in Basra and Baghdad are better off than they were is no longer the point. The gruesome irony that these terrible things occurred at Abu Ghraib, the very prison used by Saddam Hussein's torturers, will not be lost on Arabs. The Americans have been negligent in the extreme to allow this situation. Try as we might to forget these episodes, we can be sure that they will live on in Arab minds for a generation. Al-Qa'ida and Hamas could not have designed a better recruiting poster. The Abu Ghraib portfolio is shocking, but not at base so surprising. Since the war on terror was inaugurated in the dust of 11 September 2001, the US has permitted itself a much more relaxed interpretation of civil liberties. An individual's rights are not defined by any absolute standard of decency but by his or her allegiance. Both public and media has squared the national conscience on the question of prisoners being held without trial or legal representation in Guan-tanamo Bay. Even the arrest of civilians on the mainland, their detention without explanation or hope of release, has caused little stir. Quite apart from underlining how things have changed since 9/11, it is clear that if the US is prepared to ignore the liberties defined in the Bill of Rights of its own citizens, it doesn't require special deliberation before foreigners are abused on their own soil by US Army personnel and their contracted thugs. I hope the same conclusion cannot be drawn about the state of Britain's national conscience. Judging by the swift reactions of General Sir Mike Jackson and No 10, we are at least taking the allegations very seriously. Yet we are daily conceding liberties such as the universal right to trial and I believe this largely unprotested trend will not be reflected well in our armies serving abroad. In the course of researching a novel, I came across alarming evidence of arm's-length torture being committed by those acting on behalf of the US. A contracted special forces mercenary, who has served in Afghanistan and Iraq in both military and intelligence roles, avoided the question when I first asked him about the interrogation of suspects in the war on terror over lunch in London. Then he conceded that maybe they were slapped around a little. Does that include the use of truncheons and electricity? I asked. He looked over his habitual dark glasses so we had eye contact. Who's to know what foreign governments do to their citizens? That is not the responsibility of the USG. The implication was utterly clear. So far, we have evidence only of stress and duress torture lite, as it is called by the professionals but there are grounds to believe that the US has used a number of proxy nations to go the whole way with terrorist suspects. There are rumours that Egypt, Jordan and Syria have all complied with

Only ignorance or bliss, I figured at the time, could lead another president and White House to make the same kind of mistakes we made during Nixon's presidency. Of course Nixon did not declare anyone who didn't share the faith (whatever it is) or disagreed in the slightest as unpatriotic, and if he had, the people weren't so placid and dumbed down that they would have believed him. -Caveat Lector- In a message dated 4/7/2004 4:31:20 PM Eastern Standard Time, [EMAIL PROTECTED] writes: Senator John Kerry has been defining himself as a Presidential candidate who would, if elected, continue the Bush foreign policy in regard to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. If you listen to what he is currently saying, you get a feeling that he wants voters (especially Jewish voters) to believe that a Kerry presidency would be even more supportive of the Sharon government, and actually less even-handed in its dealings with the Palestinians than the current administration. This is his present position despite some previous statements Kerry made fairly recently which indicate that he may have supported a more open-minded US policy toward the region. Oh thank heavens. I had this hideous vision of the Israeli required to take down the fence, share the water, all sorts of dastardly things. Naturally-occurring uranium contains two main radioactive isotopes: U-238 (99.3%), and U-235 (0.7%). When uranium is enriched to make an A-bomb (which requires lots of U-235), the leftover depleted uranium (DU) is 99.8% U-238 and retains about 60% of the radioactivity that was present in the original natural uranium.[1, pg. 3] Depleted uranium is created by uranium enrichment plants that process natural uranium to extract the U-235, but those same plants also may process spent nuclear fuel from nuclear power reactors. For this reason, some DU is known to be contaminated with very low levels of some of the most dangerous radioactive substances known to science: Plutonium-238, Plutonium-239, Plutonium-240, Americium-241, Neptunium-237 and Technicium-99.[1, pg. 6] Radioactive decay is a natural process. Radioactive elements spontaneously emit energetic particles or rays, and in the process they change from one element into another. When U-238 spontaneously undergoes radioactive decay, it emits alpha particles (and turns into Thorium-234). You can think of an alpha particle as something like a tiny cannon ball -- it does not travel very far (a few centimeters in air), but if it hits a living cell, the damage can be enormous. Sometimes cells damaged by alpha particles die immediately, but sometimes they start to multiply uncontrollably, causing cancer. (The International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) has identified internally deposited radionuclides that emit alpha particles as Group I carcinogens, meaning substances known to cause cancer in humans.[1, pg. 85]) So, DU's alpha particles won't penetrate the outermost (dead) layer of your skin, but if you get DU inside you -- say, in your lungs -- it can have deadly consequences. Several studies of workers in uranium enrichment plants show that they get lung cancer at higher-than-normal rates.[1, pg. 86] The half-life of U-238 is 4.5 billion years, which tells us that it does not decay rapidly and therefore that it does not emit many alpha particles per second. However, many is a relative term. In absolute numbers, a microgram of DU (a millionth of a gram, and there are 28 grams in an ounce) will emit slightly more than 12 alpha particles per second or 390 million alpha particles each year.[1, pg. 6] So one microgram of DU lodged in your lungs will have more than a million opportunities EACH DAY to start a cancer growing in your cells. Obviously, the hazard is greater for children because they have a longer lifetime ahead of them during which alpha particles will have an opportunity to start a cancer, plus they are very likely more sensitive to harm than adults (because they are growing, so more of their cells are dividing). In recent decades, as we have manufactured more atomic bombs and therefore more depleted uranium, there has been growing pressure to find new uses for our huge stockpile of depleted uranium.[1, pg. 26] In my opinion, the psychology behind this is pretty simple: as it becomes crystal clear that subsidizing nuclear technologies was one of the dumbest mistakes humans have ever made, there is enormous

In a speech at Brown University (28February) Kerry said, "...we must again reaffirm we are enlisted for theduration - and reaffirm our belief that the cause of Israel must be thecause of America - and the cause of people of conscience everywhere". There are several reasons. For one thing, Senator Kerry recently discovered that he is actually Jewish and for another, he wants to be president. No one who is not for killing Palestinians and sending tons of cash to Israel will ever get elected to anything. Israel's causes now mean more to America than any cause America has ever had. [CTRL] Israeli Troops Raid Banks in Ramallah
-Caveat Lector- It's a whole new way of thinking. But why not? "Take what you want." Wasn't that the motto of Alistair Crowley'sSatan worshippers or somebody? The Associated Press article that follows was in my morning paper this very day: RAMALLAH, West Bank--Israeli forces burst into Palestinian banks on Wednesday, corralled employees, covered security cameras and seized at least $6.7 million in an unprecedented raid. Israel said Iran, Syria and Lebanese guerillas sent the funds to Palestinian militants. Palestinian officials said the raid violated banking agreements and could trigger a run on the banks. "It's like the mafia," Prime Minister Ahmed Qureia said of the operation. "I think it should be dealt with in a very serious way." "The Occupation's Armed Robbery" was the huge red headline in Al-Hayat Al-Jadida, a newspaper close to the Palestinian Authority, for its edition today. An Israeli official called the operation "legal confiscation." Israel said the raid was part of the global fight against terror funding. "This money is the fuel for Palestinian terror, and I am convinced we have to dry up the paths for this fuel." Defense Minister Shaul Mofaz said. The United States criticized Israel for the bank raid. "We would prefer to see Israeli coordination with the Palestinian financial authorities in order to stem the flow of funds to terrorist groups," State Department spokesman Richard Boucher said. Now I might have added some words to the criticism that Mr. Boucher made (he will probably be out of a jobtomorrow--mustn't criticize Israel), but then I thought, hey if they steal the money from the Palestinians, maybe the United States cansubtract what they steal from the billions we send them, andgive a little boost to those "no child left behind" kids who are beginning togo hungry. We were the elite. We saw the most action. Everybody in the world knows that. But we did not just kill people, we built a church, a school, treated illnesses, passed out soap, food, and clothing, and had fun and loving interaction with the indigenous people of Vietnam, just like our boys did in Normandy, Baghdad, Saigon, and everywhere American soldiers ever served. We all gave away our candy bars and rations to kids. Our hearts to oppressed people all over the globe. We all know that soldiers come in more than one category. Before they were soldiers they were the men we have seen and met in our own neighborhoods. Some do good, and some do horrible things. From some of the things we have learned, it appears that the commanders are where the military is lacking. A good commander keeps his troops in line and forces them to be the kind of representatives our country needs. Apparently it is our officer corps that is the problem. Nuclear conflict, mega-droughts, famine and widespread rioting will erupt across the world. The document predicts that abrupt climate change could bring the planet to the edge of anarchy as countries develop a nuclear threat to defend and secure dwindling food, water and energy supplies. The threat to global stability vastly eclipses that of terrorism, say the few experts privy to its contents. 'Disruption and conflict will be endemic features of life,' concludes the Pentagon analysis. 'Once again, warfare would define human life.' The report was commissioned by influential Pentagon defence adviser Andrew Marshall, who has held considerable sway on US military thinking over the past three decades. He was the man behind a sweeping recent review aimed at transforming the American military under Defence Secretary Donald Rumsfeld. -Caveat Lector- In a message dated 2/21/2004 1:34:38 AM Eastern Standard Time, [EMAIL PROTECTED] writes: As one young Arab-Israeli woman - who will never be quoted in an article about the rising tide of anti-Semitism - said so eloquently and passionately the last night of the conference, "Yes, I experience discrimination in Israel. Can you imagine? The Israeli Jews who are the first to remind the world of the Holocaust and what it was and did and how anti-Semitism is a constant threat for Jews the world over, are actively "discriminating" agains Arab-Israeli. It makes me think of my teen-age son's complaint in the mid-seventies. At our previous location his best friend was a black kid, and he fully expected to have both black and white friends at his new school.Hecouldn't understand why black kidswere standoffish andeven hostile. I don't suppose he felt responsible for the discrimination thathad beena part of this country's history. I've no idea why the Israeli Jews hold theArabs (those in Israel and all others as well) as being responsible for the Holocaust. But it is onthe Arabsthat they are exacting their revenge. It has to be revenge, because otherwise they would not be using the exact techniques that were used upon them during theHolocaust. And the Germans used their main excuse for the behavior that started the whole thing as a need for space to live. There is aGerman term for it that I cannot spell. Amazingly the victims of that need (as defined by Nazi Germany) are using their greed for land and space as the same exact excuse to perpetratea holocaust of their own.Oh well. What we're seeing is a superb campaign to "starve the beast." All is going well, and most citizens will be thoroughly and completely controlled soonest. Iraqi civilians were killed by US soldiers' gunfire during the aftermath. However, questions about the conflicting numbers as to the number of dead US soldiers and Iraqi civilians remain. In a CENTCOM press release for the incident, the US Military claims that three task force All American soldiers were killed in the blast by the Improvised Explosive Device (IED), and one Iraqi killed. The press release also states that one soldier and several Iraqis were wounded. Witnesses at the scene today told a very different story, as did personnel at the Ramadi Hospital where the civilian Iraqi casualties were taken. Mohammed (last name withheld), a 25 year old Iraqi man who lives near the scene, said, I saw 12 US soldiers killed. Body parts were everywhere. There were also at least 5 injured. He and several other witnesses said they watched as the US vehicle was exploded by the IED, then other soldiers opened up with gunfire, shooting everything in sight. Hammad Naif Ermil, driving a large truck, was shot and killed, as were other Iraqis riding in a bus behind him that was riddled with American bullet holes. Ali (last name withheld), an Iraqi Policeman who witnessed the incident, said, I saw 12 dead US soldiers. They put them in black body bags and flew them out by helicopters. Ali said, We tried to help get the man out of the bus, but the American's wouldn't let us. He died because they wouldn't let us get him out. A man who also lives near the scene of the incident, Abdul Ahkman, said, I saw 12 US soldiers killed and flown away by their helicopters. We want the Americans to leave. They said they would bring us freedom, but they have only brought us death and suffering. We will kill them all if they stay here. Meanwhile, last weekend Brigadier General Mark Kimmitt told AP News, We believe we've got sufficient capability to maintain a reasonable security level in the country. We left the scene after watching young Iraqi boys holding bloody bandages and IV bags from US medics having done emergency triage on their wounded comrades. One young boy proudly displayed his US Army watch from a dead US soldier. The crater from the IED blast was several feet deep, in the median between the lanes of the highway. We came upon the funeral procession for the truck driver who had been killed, his coffin draped in an Iraqi flag carried somberly by many men, crying as they carried it to the mosque, then up a small hill to the village cemetery. One man pulls me aside from the procession and says, The American's are treating us like animals. They are raiding our homes each day. They are stealing our money. At least one man from every home here has been detained. Saddam destroyed us, but the American's are destroying everything we have. Another man tells me, We want freedom. We need jobs. I am a teacher, but I haven't worked since the invasion. They promised us freedom, but they are only giving us prison, killing, and bad treatment. Yet another angered man says, The US says they came for weapons of mass destruction and Saddam. They have found no WMD's, they have Saddam, and we still suffer. We will fight against them all the way now. They have come because of money. They are insulting all of us. Iraqi people have the right to resist the Americans because they are invaders. When they are attacked, why do they always kill others who are not involved? A few of the men tell me that Khaldiya now has one hour of electricity per day, and a 7pm curfew. Haji, angrily tells me, I expected the Americans to be better than this. If they are honest, they should pull out now. They

The Rabbi is wrong. It's really difficult to feel tremendous sympathy for a people who are fencing and killing their enemies at what is really an admirable rate, and who kill even those who are trying to get them to ease up on their eradication procedures. Anti-Semitism is not even a pimple in the picture. What we are now watching go on is a kind of reflection of all those horrors that stunned us when we discovered what the Nazi had done in the forties, only now we are watching as the decendents of the survivors of that catastrophe perpetrate a like horror on another people. There is noHolocaust denial here.
