Re: [CTRL] TROTSKY ARRESTED IN NOVA SCOTIA 1917

2002-04-10 Thread Richard Spence

-Caveat Lector-

I think I've posted on this subject before, but FWIW, Canadian officials
had absolutely nothing to do with Trotsky's arrest in Halifax on 3 April
1917; it was carried out by British naval authorities (Lt. M. Jones, RNVR
at the head of an armed party from the HMS Devonshire) acting on the
instructions of the Admiralty's Naval Intelligence Division. The later,
advised the apprehension of Trotsky and five companions (all veteran
Russian radicals), not 300. T's wife and son also were removed from the
SS Kristianiafjord (a Norwegian vessel) but not formally arrested. T and
friends spent most of April in the POW/internment camp in Amherst NS under
guard by Canadian authorities, but that was the extent of their
involvement.

The Admiralty issed the order for the arrest based on a cable from the
British naval attache in New York, Capt. Guy Gaunt who, in turn, was
responding to information provided by a British intelligence informant,
Casimir Palmer-Pilenas. Among other things, Pilenas accused T of carrying
$10,000 provided by pro-German sources. No such sum was found on T or his
fellow travelers. The release oif T and the other Russians was effected
by May. Claude M. Dansey of the Secret Intelligfence Service (MI6) on 21
April.

There are, however, many legitimate questions about T's arrest, not the
least of which is why the SIS/MI6 resident in New York, Sir William
Wiseman, permitted T's departure despite having precisely the same
information from Pilenas.

For archival sources and additional details, I humbly suggest those
interested look at my article, Interrupted Journey: British Intelligence
and the Arrest of Leon Trotskii, April 1917 in _Revolutionary Russia_
(vol. 13, #1, June 2000), 1-28. Additional details may be found in the
declassified MI5 file on Trotsky (Public record Office, KV 2/ 502 or 503).

Re: [CTRL] TROTSKY, REILLY, ETC

2002-04-10 Thread Richard Spence

-Caveat Lector-

No question at all that Lenin's peace with Germany (formally concluded in
March 1918 following the armistice of Dec. 1917) allowed the latter to
shift forces to the Western Front and launch a series of big attacks.

Re Jacob Schiff's role in all this, there's not much certain at all.
Schiff was a long time
enemy of the Tsarist Regime and definitely had bankrolled revolutionary
activities in the past; for intance, paying for anti-Tsarist propaganda
distributed to Russian POWs during ther Russo-Japanese War. I have also
seen mention of the press article in which his son allegedly states that
dad deposited $10 million, $20 million or $X million for use of Lenin
Co. However, following one citation, which put the year of publication as
1949 I found no there there. I'm perfectly wiling to accept that Schiff
did that or just about anything else, but I simply haven't seen any real
evidence of it. A copy of the supposed article hopefully would clarify
whether the younger Schiff was quoted directly or if it was someone
recalling a statement (or making it up).

One thing to keep in mind is that at the time he left New York, Trotsky
was a revolutionary socialist but not a Bolshevik (not until July 1917).
Among his arguments with Lenin was the issue of Russia's unilateral
withhdrawal
from the war. In an interview with the New York Times just
before his departure, T expressed his firm oposition to a separate peace.
Interestingly, at just this time, William Wiseman was hatching a scheme to
pump pro-Allied propaganda into Russia and was especially interested in
finding credible leftists who opposed separate peace to go back to Russia
and spread the gospel. The fact that at the time T fit the part
perfectly makes me suspect that Wiseman's failure to obstruct his return
was no oversight. Wittingly or not, the aim was to use T as an Allied
agent. To further muddle the picture, one of financial backers of
Wiseman's scheme was none other than Jacob Schiff. The details of the
arrangement can be found in W.B. Fowler's _Anglo-American Relations,
1917-1919 [?]: The Role of Sir William Wiseman_.

As for Mr. Reilly (originally Salomon Rosenblum), for any who may be
interested my biography of that worthy, _Trust No One: The Secret World of
Sidney Reilly_ is to come out from Feral House this October. The core of
its research contains files from Russian, British, American and other
archives, including relevant FSB[KGB], MI5 and MI6 dossiers. Probably the
most interesting thing these documents reveal is that none of the agencies
had any real idea who they were dealing with. The Ace-of-Spies series,
while immensely entertaining, contains only bits and pieces of the truth
and a lot of fiction. His actual career, suffice to say, has no shortage
of genuine intrigue and, dare I say, conspiracy. For instance, Reilly also
served as an informant for Wiseman in WWI New York and the pair remained
close for many years to come.

Out of curiosity, has anyone run across reference to or material on the

Re: [CTRL] WWII Losses

2001-09-10 Thread Richard Spence

-Caveat Lector-

FWIW, according to R.E. and T.N. Dupuy's _Encyclopedia of Military
History_, 2nd Revised ed., p. 1198, the number of WWII *military dead*
was:

USA--292,100
Britain--397,762 (less than half their WWI loss)
France--210,671 (less than 1/6 their WWI loss)
USSR--7,500,000 (includes @ 2,000,000 POWs died in captivity)
China--500,000 (undoubtedly higher but most Chinese dead were civilians)
Germany--2,850,000
Italy--77,500
Italy--1,506,000
All others--1,500,000

Total civilian dead is estimated at 26-34,000,000

I've seen somewhat different figures for many of the above. Calculations
can vary depending on whether or which categories of non-combat deaths
(disease, death in captivity) or missing are included or excluded.

[CTRL] Crowley and British Intelligence

2000-09-07 Thread Richard Spence

For those interested in Crowley's connection to British Intell, at least
in the WWI period, I humbly suggest you may want to look at my "Secret
Agent 666: Aleister Crowley and British Intelligence in America,
1914-1918" in _International Journal of Intelligence and
CounterIntelligence_, Vol. 13, #3 (Fall 2000), pp 359-371. The key point,
perhaps, is that when American investigators took an interest in Crowley's
association with suspected German agents, the British consul in New York,
Clive Bayley, quietly came forward to assure the inquisitive Yankees that
C's activities were known to and condoned by His Majesty's
officials. Basically, C seems to have used to ferret out Irish-German
links and as something of a literary provocateur. This does not
necessarily mean that the claims of C and others of later and more
extensive collaboration with British spookdom were true, but it certainly
suggests that they may contain some truth at least.

Respectfully,

RB Spence

[CTRL] I.B. Pranaitis

2000-06-21 Thread Richard Spence

Anyone interested in the background and credentials of the Rev. Pranaitis
(or Pronaitis) should check out

www.geocities.com/Athens/Cyprus/8815/pranaitis.html

Basically, his abilities as a hebraist and Talmud expert seem to have been
rather exaggerated.

It may be worth noting that Pranaitis was a Lithuanian, who, along with
Poles, were chief Roman Catholic minorities in the tsarist, orthodox
Russian Empire. Given that the Church of Rome was itself somewhat suspect
to Russian authorities, who reserved deeper antipathy towards
Jewish subjects, Pranaitis' Jew-baiting may have been an effort to gain
the approval of the powers in St. Petersburg.

Re: [CTRL] History of Yugoslavia

1999-04-24 Thread Richard Spence

 -Caveat Lector-

A good, basic text is L.S. Stavrianos, _The Balkans since 1453_ (1958).
Although old, Ferdinand Schevill's _A History of the Balkan
Peninsula_(1922, reprint 1971) and William Miller, _The Ottoman Empire and
Its Successors, 1801-1927_ (1936) remain useful and informative.
Various volumes of the "History of East Central Europe" series are very
good, especially Charles and Barbara Jelavich, _The Establishment of the
Balkan National States, 1804-1920_ (1977) and Joseph Rothschild, _East
Central Europe between the Two World Wars_ (c. 1986). Rothschild
also has a more recent work on post-WWII EE, _Return to Diversity_ (1993).
On Serbia/Yugoslavia, per se, see Michael B. Petrovich, _A History of
Modern Serbia, 1804-1918_ (1976), Stephen Clissold, _A Short History
of Yugoslavia from Early Times to 1966_ (1966), and Vladimir Dedijer, et
al, _History of Yugoslavia_ (1974). The latter is more of less the
official Titoist version of things, most useful as an example of how
]matters of history and nationality were handled under that regime.
Also, keep an eye out for other, related works by Charles and Barbara
Jelavich and Peter Sugar.

Best Regards,

Rick Spence

PS, Paul Robert Magocsi's _Historical Atlas of East Central Europe_ is a
very useful reference.
