How many of us have ever called ahead of going somewhere to check the number of fire exits or safety conditions of the building. Many of us don't like crowded places or being in a strange building or place with lots of people. The two incidents in the last four days in Chicago and West Warrick R.I. remind us to think before we rush off to party especially where alcohol or drug consumption is possible. Panic is likely in any situation but is made worse by being intoxicated. At the cost of any entertainment these days, with some concert tickets costing over $400.00 a seat,we should plan ahead before rushing offsomewhere. -Caveat Lector- I think that one of his most misunderstood quotes was that religion is the opiate of the masses. In the context of the time in which he lived this was very true. Since in most societies then there was no safety net. If you were too ill to work, and had no family to help you out, you just fell thru the cracks. I many places there were still debter's prisons or work houses. It was too easy then, to say to a poor starving worker, that it was God's will that things be that way. That they should accept it and hope for a reward in heaven. People bore with the most deploreable conditions because they felt God had deemed it so. In our time we have so little concept of such a struggle. The closest we can to this was the great depression in the 1930's. There is a book Down and Out in the Great Depression of letters from common people in their own language to the President and others describing their situation. Many families lost their homes for less than $40.00 in back taxes. Another book is fiction but gives you a sense of what true poverty is The Jungle by Upton Sinclair (who by the way happened to be a socialist). This comment may be off topic but I think it's related. I believe that what they have to say is relevant for the world today, including the Christian and Islamic worlds. For all practical intent and purpose, I will say that these four are Jewish teachers seem to have been excluded from the canon for ideological reasons. Jesus, claimed to be the Messiah by his followers, predicted the fall of the Temple, if events were as written in the Gospels. He also made comments on divorce and social injustice that must be taken in to account. He challenged conservative male Jewish forces on some very valid points. I do not accept the claim that he was the Messiah, however whether he was or was not it is more important to honor God that man. He said as much himself. Trinitarian Christians should take heed of his own words on the subject of God and man. John the Revelator seems to have predicted many things in the world today. Much corresponds to what is written in the Book of Daniel. However, he also predicted the rise of a latter-day Babylon the Great, an imperialistic nation that essentially rules over the kingdoms of the earth, something the non-apocraphyl books of the Hebrew Bible do not seem to mention directly. Much of what he wrote about seems to have come to pass in the rising to power of an economic system ruling over the kingdoms of the planet. I step back from saying that the United States fulfills this prophecy geographically. I would pray it were otherwise. However, I cannot dismiss it. Nostradomus seems to have a good accuracy rating. Even the 1999 prophecy may have come true in the form of the JFK, Jr. crash. I do not dismiss this possibility, but it is a hard one, and much like seeing patterns in the bark of a tree. So much has been claimed about Nostradomus that I cannot really say one way or the other. I am skeptical about New Age prophets but Ican say that a very few seem incredibly accurate. Nostradomus seems to have been incredibly accurate. Karl Marx is a much maligned name because it is associated with the atheistical tyrannies of the former Soviet Union and modern China. Erich Fromm and T.B. Bottmore unearthed a more complex thinker by searching the archives. He was heavily influenced by the Enlightenment and its views on religion, and was no more guilty than other thinkers of his time of not believing in God. He didn't. But Thursday morning, as the sun rose over the Treasure Coast, a dozen more of the black, 8- to 10-inch-long catfish were making their way across the street. Originally native to southeast Asia, the walking catfish, or clarias batrachus, as it is scientifically known, can walk short distances on land, moving from one water body to the next -- thanks to two unique aspects of its ana- Âtomy: auxiliary breathing organs and the strong spines of its fins that can lock, allowing it to walk. In its native environment, the walking catfish inhabits muddy swamps, ponds, ditches, and rice paddies, but it initially came to America from Thailand as a popular pet shop item. Paul Shafland, a biologist with Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission's exotic fisheries laboratory in Boca Raton, said the odd catfish entered the Florida ecosystem during the 1960s, when several of the fish escaped from commercial fish farms near Deerfeld Beach and Tampa. Basically, they appear to have simply walked out of these facilities, Shafland said. Since then, the walking catfish has become one of the most extensively distributed of any exotic fish in the state, moving into a range stretching from Central Flo- Ârida to the southern tip of the peninsula. Besides surprising Florida homeowners from time to time with their sudden emergence -- often after heavy rains -- the walking catfish is considered somewhat problematic because it competes with native game species and is an efficient predator that devastates freshwater fish communities. Despite their presence in Florida wetlands, the state Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission requires people to secure a permit before owning one. We see them every once in a while, but because of the drought, it's probably been quite a long time since we've seen a significant emergence in this area, said Philip Baldwin, program director for the Florida Oceanographic Society. Baldwin theorizes that during the drought, populations of walking catfish continued to increase in deeper ponds and wetlands, and the rain provided the fish with a chance to find new places to live where there are fewer of them and more food sources. The walking catfish feeds on insect larvae, earthworms, shells, shrimp, small fish, aquatic plants and even debris and garbage. That's one reason they're so good at competing against native species, Baldwin said. They'll eat anything. Shafland said Baldwin's take on walking catfish is the common view, but one he disagrees with. Don't get me wrong, we consider these animals biological pollution. We don't like them and we don't want them here. But they simply haven't proven as catastrophic as once was feared, the biologist said. In fact, except for these isolated cases, we don't see nearly as many as we used to, Shafland continued. Heavy rains, thick clouds and, in some cases, even heavy morning dews, are key to inspiring the catfish's movement, he said. Difficult to imagine Timothy McVeigh and his interest in Gore Vidal.
Once years ago Buckley and Vidal got into a public argument - Buckley
called Gore a queer son-of-a-bitch, after Vidal goaded him into
reacting. Gore Vidal was a homosexual and wasn ot offended by the
remark.
So why Gore Vidal? From Turner Diaries to Gore Vidal? Maybe McVeigh
should have read a little less Vidal and a little more of a great work
called Crime and Punishment.
Gore Vidal liked to shock people; he held the American people in
contempt which was obvious, but then so did McVeigh.
After all it appears in the end McVeigh was just another Oswald who
considered himself superior to the American sheeple?
So McVeigh was his own executioner but wonder, must wonder if he was a
latlent homosexual hence the curious interest in Gore Vidal .
Makes one wonder if there was a little bit of Gore in McVeigh -

Detective novels under the pseudonym Edgar Box
Prolific American novelist, playwright, and essayist, one of the great
stylists of contemporary American prose, who has been active in
politics. Vidal made his debut as novelist with WILLIWAW at the age of
19, while still in US Army uniform.
One understands of course why the role of the individual in history is
instinctively played down by a would-be egalitarian society. We are,
quite naturally, afraid of being victimized by reckless adventurers. To
avoid this we have created a myth of the ineluctable mass
('other-directedness') which governs all. Science, we are told, is not a
matter of individual inquiry but of collective effort. Even the surface
storminess of our elections disguises a fundamental indifference to
human personality; if not this man, then that one; it's all the same,
life will go on. (from 'Robert Graves and the Twelve Caesars', in
Rocking the Boat, 1963)
Gore Vidal grew accustomed at an early age to a life among political and
social notables. He was born at the military academy in West Point, New
York, where his father was an instructor.
He was raised near Washington, DC, in the house of his grandfather,
Thomas P. Gore, a populist Democrat senator from Oklahoma.
Vidal learned about political life from him and when he was a teenager
he adopted the first name of Gore. Vidal also spent time on the Virginia
estate of his stepfather, Hugh. D. Auchincloss. After graduating from
Philips Exeter Academy in New Hampshire, he served on an army supply
ship in the Aleutian Islands, near Alaska.
Much of his time in the Enlisted Reserve Corps he devoted to writing.
Upon his discharge he worked for six months for the publishing firm of
E.P. Dutton. From 1947 to 1949 Vidal lived in Antigua, Guatemala. His
first novel, Williwaw, was based on his wartime experiences as first
mate on Freight Ship 35 in the Alaskan Harbour Craft Detachment. The
conventional seafaring story was written in the spirit Ernest Hemingway.
The novel was praised by the critics like the following books, although
THE CITY AND THE PILLAR (1948) shocked the public with its homosexual
main character. However, he became known as a serious writer at the age
of 21, and the novel also 'broke the mold' of gay American fiction.
The book was reissued in 1965 with a different ending. THE JUDGEMENT OF
PARIS (1953) was about a young man travelling with jet-set and wondering
how to satisfy his own part-cynical, part-romantic outlook. Several of
his following novels did not gain critical approval and Vidal started to
write plays for television, motion pictures and stage. Among his
best-known works from the 1950s is VISIT TO A SMALL PLANET (prod. first
for television in 1955).
In the 1960s Vidal returned to the literary scene by producing
historical or contemporary novels, including JULIAN (1964), written in
the form of a journal by the eponymous Roman emperor,
WASHINGTON, D.C. (1967), a political thriller spanning the years
1937-52, BURR (1974), in which its title character rises above the other
Founding Fathers, 1876 (1976), DULUTH (1983), and LINCOLN (1984), a
carefully reconstructed account of the life of the US president, who is
almost diabolically unknowable in his use of power. CREATION (1981)
was the memoir of an imaginary grandson of Zoroaster who travels the
world in the service of Persian kings and plays with the ideas of
Confucius, Gautama Buddha, Anaxagoras and other thinkers. In LIVE FROM

The bible says that there is only one unforgivable sin (blaspheming the Holy Spirit.I understand that this means denying the power of God). Who decides what is normal and what is mental illness. Much of what passes for normal today was abnormal 40 years ago. I love to read old sociology and psychology textbooks. They remind me how much things have changed. Has anyone read the book "Sugar Blues" by Duffy It has some very interesting thoughts on lots of subjects. Another good book is "The manufacture of madness" (I think that's the correct title).
