-Caveat Lector- Connoisseur turned crook who plundered Europe's galleries for the simple love of art http://www.guardian.co.uk/arts/news/story/0,11711,889100,00.html Thief faces jail despite mother's effort to destroy illicit collection John Hooper in Berlin Wednesday February 5, 2003 The Guardian On a March day in 1995, Stéphane Breitwieser and his girlfriend, Anne- Catherine Kleinklauss, found themselves alone in the Belle Luce room of the magnificent medieval castle at Gruyères, the cheese- making town in central Switzerland. Breitwieser was entranced by a small painting by the 18th century German artist, Christian Wilhelm Dietrich. It was not a particularly famous or valuable work: the painting - a portrait of a woman - was later priced at less than £1,500. But there was something about the subject which captivated the 23 year-old Breitwieser. I was fascinated by her beauty, by the qualities of the woman in the portrait and by her eyes, he recalled yesterday. I thought it was an imitation of Rembrandt. Another art lover might have lingered awhile and then turned from the room with a sigh. Instead, with his girlfriend keeping watch, Breitwieser worked out the nails holding the canvas in its frame, slipped the painting under his jacket and left the castle. The young waiter had just embarked on a six-year career in art theft which was to take him across Europe, net him works of art and objets d'art worth tens of millions of pounds, and lead him back yesterday to a court at Gruyères where he faces a 10-year prison sentence. Bizarrely, his passion for art resulted in many of the stolen works being thrown into a canal by his own mother. French prosecutors have said that, after learning of her son's arrest in November 2001, his mother, Mireille Breitwieser, destroyed some of what she found in his bedroom and threw other works and antiques into the Rhine-Rhône canal near the family home at Eschentzwiller. Among the vandalised canvasses were works by Antoine Watteau and Peter Bruegel. About 110 objects, valued at more than £6m, have been recovered including glassware, china, and musical instruments. But up to 60 paintings have not been found, and investigators fear they were destroyed by Mrs Breitwieser. Apart from the scale of the Frenchman's ambition and success as a thief, what distinguishes her son from other, common or garden art robbers is his motive: not lucre, but a genuine love of art and antiques. He made no effort to sell the works he stole and investigators came to accept that he was driven solely by the desire to build up a collection that would be the envy of many billionaires and which he stored in the house he shared with his mother near the Swiss border. They noted that the connoisseur-crook showed a marked preference for the 16th and 17th century masters. The magistrate in charge of his case quoted him as saying: I enjoy art. I love such works of art. I collected them and kept them at home. Not the least important of the many questions before the court is whether Breitwieser's sincerity as a collector should have any bearing on his fate. The daily Le Temps newspaper said his lawyer would argue that his client had admitted fraudulent removal, which is a lesser crime than the theft charges he is facing. Breitwieser grew up in an environment imbued by the love of old and beautiful things. His father was a collector of antiques. When his father left home, he took with him his collection of antique weapons and young Stéphane decided that one day he would have his own. Art already played a role in the family - his great-uncle was the Alsace painter, Robert Breitwieser who died in 1975 - and Stéphane's interests soon broadened out from antiques to painting. He has so far admitted to stealing 239 pictures and museum exhibits. His most valuable haul is reckoned to be a 16th-century work by Lucas Cranach the Elder entitled Sybille, Princess of Cleves, which was taken from a museum in Baden-Baden in Germany in 1995. It is estimated that it would fetch between £5- 5.6m at auction. Breitwieser targeted mostly small museums in France and Switzerland, but he has admitted to dipping into collections in the Netherlands, Belgium, Denmark, Germany and Austria. He helped himself to oils, drawings, statuettes, goblets, dishes, pistols, daggers, halberds, and powder horns. The end of his extraordinary criminal-cultural adventure came when he was arrested near the Richard Wagner museum in Lucerne, a few days after allegedly stealing a hunting dagger made of horn and dating from 1584. A verdict in his case is expected on Thursday, after which he faces extradition to France. Breitwieser astonished detectives with the detail of his recall. He was able to tell them not only about everything he had stolen but also the place to which he had assigned each item in his mother's home. Mr Milicua's information came from a written account of Laurencic's trial before a Francoist military tribunal. . . The cells, built in 1938 and reportedly hidden from foreign journalists who visited the makeshift jails on Vallmajor and Saragossa streets, were as inspired by ideas of geometric abstraction and surrealism as they were by avant garde art theories on the psychological properties of colors. Beds were placed at a 20 degree angle, making them near-impossible to sleep on, and the floors of the 6ft by 3ft cells was scattered with bricks and other geometric blocks to prevent prisoners from walking backwards and forwards, according to the account of Laurencic's trial. The only option left to prisoners was staring at the walls, which were curved and covered with mind-altering patterns of cubes, squares, straight lines and spirals which utilized tricks of color, perspective and scale to cause mental confusion and distress. . . Mark Regev, a spokesman at the Israeli embassy in Washington is quoted by the Jerusalem Post as saying: The report on Fox News contains no quoted source, it has in no way demonstrated anything more than anonymous innuendo, and should be regarded accordingly. Israel does not spy on the United States of America. Gee, Mark, does the name Jonathan Pollard ring a bell? SUICIDAL TENDENCIES Naturally, the law enforcement sources who utilized Cameron's investigation to voice their concerns didn't dare allow their names to be used: as Cameron related in his report, any question regarding the possibility of Isr aeli spying in the US is career suicide for those who dare raise it. Question: is it also career suicide for journalists to raise it? I have seen a few news items reporting on the Cameron exposé, but, given the implications and scope of what we're talking about here, the answer is, apparently, yes. For Cameron and Fox News are not merely saying that the Israelis have been conducting a sprawling spy operation in the US, involving the massive penetration of our communications systems and government agencies. As Cameron so diplomatically put it in the first segment of hi s four-part investigation: There is no indication that the Israelis were involved in the 9-11 attacks, but investigators suspect that the Israelis may have gathered intelligence about the attacks in advance, and not shared it. A GUILTY SILENCE In other words: Israel's passive complicity made the worst terrorist attack in American history possible. One would think that the sheer enormity of such a charge would provoke a storm of outrage from Israel's many defend ers in the media: the columnists, the think-tankers, the publicists who dote on Ariel Sharon's every word. But, no: instead, there is an ominous, one might almost say a guilty silence. THANKS BE TO GOOGLE! It's frightening, really, when you think about it. They seemed particularly active in the state of Texas: in Dallas, one student was found wandering the halls of a federal facility with a floor plan in his hands. Say, what? Starting in the third week of January, reports began to pour in to the National Counterintelligence Center (NCC) about suspicious visitors to federal facilities. The NCC's bimonthly report for March 2001 states: In the past six weeks, employees in federal office buildings located throughout the United States have reported suspicious activities connected with individuals representing themselves as foreign students selling or deli vering artwork. Employees have observed both males and females attempting to bypass facility security and enter federal buildings. INVASION OF THE 'ART STUDENTS' The NCC described these people -- supposedly working for an outfit known as Universal Art, Inc. - - as aggressive in attempting to gain access to federal facilities, and reported that two had been arrested for having counterfeit work visas and green cards. Then this stunner: These individuals have also gone to the private residences of senior federal officials under the guise of selling art. Now wait just a friggin' minute, dude s top right there! Maybe others are middle-aged and not so adept at these things. I would like you to tell exactly how to locate him and the correct hours for Central Time Zone. Also, How does one listen to him via computer and the Internet? I only tried a few times but could not find this program. Which is better--radio or computer? It may be difficult for some of you young people to believe that this is a problem but it is for me being self-taught (trial error) on a computer. -Caveat Lector- Hi Amelia: I'm 40 (middle-aged and not at all computer adept) and I don't listen to Art Bell via the internet. For one thing, I won't tie up my phone line all night and I work days, so I can't sit up all night to listen anyway. I'm usually asleep by 9:00 pm (EST)!! and his braodcast doesn't start until 1:00 am here in Massachusetts. I bought something called a Select-antenna that drastically improves AM radio reception. I record the show everynight and listen to it the next day at work. And I listen to a Providence, RI station (about 40 miles away) that carries the first 4 hours of his show. (Or they did. I haven't listened to Coast to Coast since Art Bell retired so I have to find out if WPRO still carries it. A lot of stations have dropped it). While some of the topics and guests that Art covers are pure nonsense, his shows always make you think. And I've found if one is willing to at least entertain ridulous or off-the-wall ideas, one will have a much better understanding of the world and why things happen the way they do. Perhaps some great unseen force is controlling all that happens. If one doesn't have an open mind to explore the possiblility, one will never find out. Amelia, I hope you can find Art Bell when he comes back. I haven't been to his web site since he retired (because it doesn't have any interesting info anymore) but it used to have a complete list of all the stations that carry him. Perhaps that might help. The CIA drug connection began with the Vietnam War when Theodore Shackley, along with assistant Thomas Clines, became the CIA station chief in Vientiane and Laos. The CIA's biggest asset was recruiting Hmong tribesmen to fight against the nationalistic Pathet Lao, and Vientiane became the drug capital of Laos. Vang Pao eventually gained a monopoly in the Golden Triangle, where Burma, Thailand, and Laos intersect. In Laos Air America, a CIA-sponsored airline, flew opium out of the Vientiane area. In 1971 alone, 60 kilograms of Laotian opium, valued at $13.5 million, were seized from the suitcase of a Laotian member of the World Anticommunist League, which was headed by General John Singlaub. In addition, General Richard Secord worked for Shackley, and his boss in the middle 1970s was CIA director George Bush. Secord oversaw the transportation of raw opium to locations where it could be processed into "China White" heroin. In a lawsuit, Shackley was charged with selling Laotian opium to Santo Trafficante and that "in return Shackley's organization received a fixed percentage of the income." In 1968, Shackley met in Saigon with Trafficante, Vang Pao, and Clines, and they set up a heroin smuggling ring to the United States. A Green Beret official speaking to Green Beret officers, stated that "Shackley had been responsible for 250 political killings in Laos. In 1969, Shackley was transferred to Saigon. Clines followed him, and both ran the CIA operations in Vietnam. Shackley and Clines set up Operation Phoenix, a program which was designed to "neutralize" or assassinate Vietnamese civilians who were suspected of collaborating with the National Liberation Front (NLF). During the Vietnam war, the amount of heroin which was exported to the United States became so immense that the operations could not remain clandestine. Consequently, in the 1960s, it became prudent for CIA operatives to stash heroin in caskets of dead Americans as well as in body bags, areas which would be least searched. When the bodies of American GIs were flown to military bases on the West coast, the heroin could be easily removed. In addition, boxes and crates, which were sent back to the states, carried heroin and coded labels alerted CIA operatives as to where to look. Top ot page The contra cocaine train. As the war in Vietnam was winding down, Shackley left Southeast Asia in 1972 to head CIA activities in the Western Hemisphere and sent Ed Wilson and Manuel Artime to meet with right-wing dictator Anastasio Somoza of Nicaragua. However, Somoza's totalitarian regime lasted only another seven years before being overthrown by the Sandinistas. Two months after Reagan's inauguration in 1981, the CIA launched its secret war in an attempt to overthrow the Sandinista government. Soon thereafter, the arms-drug caper began. The drug of choice in the 1960s and 1970s was heroin -- imported from Southeast Asia. Then in the 1980s, the primary addicting drug became cocaine, and its source was Latin America, the new hub of CIA activities. Ironically, "the war on drugs" became an important part of Reagan's domestic agenda. Bell and his wife, Ramona, have announced plans to launch the first locally based, fully licensed, Pahrump-only radio station. The Bells expect to go on the air with 95.1 FM, tentatively known as KNYE, early next spring. "We really wanted to provide a station for the town, a real one," Art Bell said. "It's about time." The station's format will be "oldies" from the 1950s, '60s and '70s.Art Bell said a wide variety of music will be played, ranging from "select (Elvis) Presley" to more contemporary artists such as the Eurythmics. "We're going to be very selective about the music we play." What the Bells won't be very selective about is how much music they play, at least not for the first six months. During that period, Art Bell said local residents can count on hearing nothing but music and station breaks on 95.1. "No commercials, five million in a row," he said. The Bells were granted a broadcast construction permit and an FM frequency to go with it by the Federal Communications Commission on Oct. 8. They obtained the construction permit in an auction for $265,000. The down payment is due Tuesday, and Ramona Bell expects to receive the actual Class A permit from the FCC sometime in January. After that, construction of the station and its 100-foot tower on Highway 372 west of Comstock Park will take three to five months, she said. Once complete, the fully computerized, two-person operation will reach the entire valley, with Ramona Bell putting in much of the on-air work. "We're bringing Pahrump into the 21st century right away," she said of the equipment to be used at the station. Like her husband, Ramona Bell is no stranger to the airwaves. She spent two and a half years working for KDWN in Las Vegas, the station from which Art Bell's radio show on the paranormal once originated. Now "Coast-to-Coast with Art Bell" is the highest rated late-night talk show in the country, with about 15 million listeners on more than 400 stations. As for whether he plans to spin any tunes on KNYE, Art Bell is noncommittal. "You may hear some of me," he said. "You never know." Ramona Bell, who is the station's licensee, said KNYE may expand with time, eventually becoming a more powerful Class B station. But the Bells' plans for 95.1 FM are not expected to affect Pahrump's other major radio project, a 100,000-watt regional station proposed by General Cyrus von Edwards of Oklahoma City. On Monday, Edwards said he is forging ahead with his project, which he said will bring a 2,000 foot tower and a Class C station the most powerful license the FCC issues to the valley. It will also bring a number of jobs here, contrary, he said, to recent comments made by at least one member of the Pahrump Town Board. Edwards said he is not concerned about competing with a Class A station, since his signal will carry "well over 100 miles" and his operation will subsist on national and regional advertising. "Whatever they might do out here will be small compared to what we will do." As for the format of his station, Edwards said that will be left up to local residents, who will be surveyed on their preferences as the station gets closer to going on line. Edwards said he has not yet applied for a frequency from the FCC, but he will do so shortly when he files his engineering schematics. He declined to speculate on when he might receive his broadcast construction permit. "I've seen them take six months and I've seen them take six years," he said. "I would hesitate to say." The Bells applied for their broadcast construction permit three and half years ago because Pahrump had "absolutely nothing" for radio listeners in search of oldies, Art Bell said. "Everywhere you went in town people were listening to oldies on 107.5," he said. "Then 107.5 changed format and put on Howard Stern, who goes over like a lead balloon out here. We're a pretty laid-back town." Since they applied for a permit from the FCC, Las Vegas oldies station 93.1 FM has begun broadcasting in Pahrump, but Art Bell said he is not worried about the competition. "Pahrump needs a legitimate radio station of its own," he said. "People need a place to get reports on the (driving) conditions over the mountain and other public service information." He gave as an excuse for quitting this time a need to have free time to fight supposedly false accusations of being a child molestor, made on some show on WWCR shortwave...which he apparantly is suing both the commenter plus WWCR over... So if he supposedly wasn't going to have time to devote to Coast-to-Coast because of this impending legal case, which he said he anticipates will drag out for years, how can he have time to devote to starting up his own station? He thought it was good fodder for this list and so do I, thus here it is. Some of it is quite shocking so be prepared. This idea of "art" becoming a shaping force of society or, a model of society as it exists, is merely another way in which controlling groups are able to push an agenda, and to cause "gross", as in aggragate sociological responses within the community at large (in this case "gross" could be taken in the context of sickening as well). Much as I have claimed in the case of crime and serial killers in particular. It is designed and propogated to instill a psychological mindset, or at least to foster a tendency toward a particular belief within the "people" at large. Manipulation. The psychological set of this piece of "art" is the same as the "art" that is created by the depraved minds of killers (some of which it is my opinion are tasked for the "jobs" they perform by representatives of the elites that are running, or at least trying to run, the show). That is that society has been and continues to degrade. There is NO base with which to anchor oneself and one must either give in to become a slave of the machine and change their freedom for the security of total government (a farce). Or one wishes to withdraw and not be involved, lending yourself to other avenues of manipulation, or your being labeled as an extremist or whatever. Just a sign of the times, but I do believe it should be viewed in a sociological context, and extrapolation of the methods and means and "reason" behind it all is good fodder for this list. Read on. . . Public Enema No. 2 Bondage, fellatio, feces-swapping, and intimate cleansing at the S.F. Art Institute By Matt Smith Amy Douglas Jonathan Yegge, who tied, blindfolded, and performed unspeakable acts on a fellow student in the name of art. Jonathan Yegge, a 24-year-old scholar at the San Francisco Art Institute, is angry, anxious, resentful. "If I have to not have sex on campus anymore, they'd better put that in the student handbook, and then we can decide whether that's an appropriate rule or not," says Yegge. "I mean, I'm on probation, and I can't have sex on campus, and anyone else can." Yegge's plight, his mood, and his outlook are a small -- no, minuscule -- portion of the aftermath of a performance art piece he crafted three weeks ago for an art class in the school's New Genres department, led by sometimes-controversial professor Tony Labat. Yegge asked for a volunteer from the class, got one, then took the young man aside into an empty room. Yegge handed the soon-to-be subject of his artwork a makeshift contract stating that the volunteer was agreeing to participate in a performance piece containing acts "including and up to a sexual or violent nature." The volunteer signed the contract. Yegge led the volunteer out into a campus public area, in front of Labat's class and anyone else who happened by, and then ... well, maybe it's best to let Yegge explain. "He was tied up. He had a blindfold and a gag, but he could see and talk through it. He had freedom of movement of his pelvis," Yegge says, by way of defending his piece. "I engaged in oral sex with him and he engaged in oral sex with me. I had given him an enema, and I had taken a shit and stuffed it in his ass. That goes on, he shits all over me, I shit in him. There was a security guard present. There was an instructor from the school present. It was videoed, and the piece was over." But the piece wasn't over, really. In the world of performance art, a work may leave no physical artifact on the earth, so the audience is its canvas. During the days and weeks after Yegge's performance ended, his work has left brush strokes all over the small S.F. art world. Not long after the piece was finished, the volunteer developed misgivings about what had happened to him. "He was pissed off, as he should be," says Ryan Castaneda, a friend of the volunteer (whose name SF Weekly is not printing for obvious reasons). "He felt he was being violated. He just didn't think this was cool." The volunteer complained. The school administration called Yegge in, put him on academic probation, and instituted the Yegge-specific no public sex on campus rule. Administration officials held lengthy meetings with Yegge's instructor, Labat. Discussions focused on the dangerous nature of exchanging bodily fluids for art's sake. Implicit was the litigiously dangerous nature of allowing this to go on in a supervised classroom. The volunteer's mother was rumored to be a judge, and it was feared the student might sue. The volunteer, contacted through friends, did not want to comment for this story. These depictions of war and persecution are the focus of the country's beliefs Serbia's art and soul I came across a monk on the Internet last week, broadcasting from one of the most beautiful of all the Serbian churches in Kosovo and Metohija - to give the province its full Serbian nomenclature, for a change - from Decani, near the Albanian border. Metohija means "land of the churches". Which is what Kosovo is to the Serbs. They also call it their Sacred Land. If you look at a map of the religious sites in the province you will see immediately why. The landscape is dotted with so many schematic crosses that you wonder where the cities might be fitted in. And how could our bombs possibly miss all these churches and monasteries and convents? The distressed Internet monk was telling his readers, rather elegantly I thought, that "history in the Balkans is like quicksand", and he was urging fellow Serbs not to allow this quicksand of history to suck them down. "If we cannot move forward now, we will suffer again," he warned. Unfortunately, the broadcast was dated to the middle of 1998. This was just another piece of ancient Internet junk, floating uselessly on the Web. As it happens, I know the monastery in Decani. I visited it more than 20 years ago as an eager art student trying to acquire a wider knowledge of Byzantine art. The old Orient Express used to go as far as Istanbul, uniting, in steam and bumps, the art of the West with that of the East, and I was able to arrange a hop-off as it passed through Tito's illusionistically coherent Yugoslavia. What an important service that bandit-attracting train used to provide as it chugged through the Balkans and made ignorance more difficult. It is fair to say, I suppose, that Byzantine art is tough to admire. It talks down to you like a sentencing judge. There's an intrinsic sternness to it. You must enter such dark and inviolately serious churches to encounter it. And then you must appreciate so much repetition. Nevertheless, tourists flock to magnificent Ravenna happily enough; and the delights of ancient Istanbul are always being eagerly sampled. But the glories of Serbian Kosovo remain significantly more obscure. Even today - unbelievably - they appear to us to form a very minor piece of the Kosovo jigsaw, but to the Serbs they have never been that. To the Serbs they constitute an indestructible 700-year-old proof of their rightful ownership of the sacred land. The monastery of Visoki Decani was founded early in the 14th century, and I wish I could remember it better. I remember that it is approached along a spectacular wooded valley and that the outside is striped in soft marble pinks and whites. The interior, as I recall it, is completely covered from floor to dome with frescoes, executed, I read, between 1335 and 1350. These are considered to be the greatest masterpieces of Serbian religious art. But are they still there? Is the treasury at Decani still filled with those curious golden crosses, so absurdly ornate that they have ceased entirely to be cross-shaped? Are the hand-painted medieval gospels still glistening in their dusty glass boxes? And over the crossing, is there still a giant Christ looking down on you with one of those terrifyingly accusatory biblical stares that are a Byzantine speciality? Who knows? It is an ugly irony of this dumb and ever dumber war that, even though art played such a critical role in its instigation, nobody appears to have taken the slightest bit of interest in it since the fighting began. Not on our side, at least. It wasn't always so. That gaseous cultural dreamer and professional Frenchman, André Malraux, looking out across the beautiful Serbian monasteries of Kosovo, with their dramatic clusters of grapefruit domes and their huge expanses of floor-to-ceiling fresco, was moved to write: "Culture, when it is the most precious possession, is never the past." God, but he was right. Malraux died in 1976. He had been a liberal, but he died a Gaullist who loved the sound of his own conservatism, and certainly wrote too much. In most modern situations I would rank him as one of the century's most eminently skippable cultural commentators. But in his few sad thoughts on Kosovo, published a quarter of a century ago in one of those impressively convoluted studies of the Slavs that are a Gallic speciality, Malraux revealed himself to be an excellent reader of the Serb mind. Being French, and of the old school, he understood perfectly the power not only of culture but also of history. Today, in new Britain, it seems to me we no longer understand the power of either. This has allegedly been going on during Art's sympathetic coverage of the protest of the management takeover of free speech radio station KPFA in Berkeley. Is Art a big hypocrite? The account that was canceled belonged to one of Art's most acerbic critics, Robert A. M. Stephens, who is famous for quipping at Art, and calling him names in posts to underground Web bulletin boards. Stephens is also the subject of a multi-million dollar defamation of character lawsuit filed by Art. According to Mitch Battros, Producer of Earth Changes TV, a major reason that Big Sky deleted Stephens' account was the fear that Art would order his webmaster, Keith Rowland, to "mail bomb" them. As another form of pressure, Art's webmaster allegedly blocked Big Sky customers from accessing Art's popular Web site. Art's Web site (www.artbell.com) is one of the top 100 visited sites on the Internet, and many of Big Sky's customers would surely have phoned customer service to complain about not having access to it. That could have been a major headache for Big Sky's support staff. If Art is attacking his critics in this way, it seems hypocritical in light of his heavy coverage of the the recent protests against radio station KPFA's management, Pacifica. Founded by pacifists after WWII, KPFA has been a sanctuary for alternative viewpoints, and a stronghold of free speech. Recently, KPFA's management has taken to firing members of the KPFA staff who criticize upper management on the air, prompting the protests. In a show last week, Art compared himself to KPFA, saying that he and KPFA are "beacons of freedom." Although Art denies pressuring service providers into dropping accounts, there have been many claims that Art has done so. The author of "The Mighty Tasty Art Bell Parody Pages" claims he was forced to move his Web site several times because Art kept having his accounts terminated. He even says that the ACLU has pledged to represent him in court if Art forces him to move again. -Caveat Lector- Art Bell's son files suit over assault A federal lawsuit claims a school district failed to take action to prevent the sexual crime of a substitute teacher. By Carri Geer By Carri Geer © 1999, Las Vegas Review-Journal The son of radio talk show host Art Bell has filed a federal lawsuit against the Nye County School District and a former substitute teacher who is serving a life prison sentence for sexually assaulting him. Arthur Bell IV identified himself in an amended complaint filed Friday in Las Vegas. The original complaint, filed in November, listed the plaintiffs in the case as John and Jane Doe and described them as the "natural parents of Peter Doe, a minor." In an order entered May 14, U.S. District Judge Johnnie Rawlinson said she would dismiss the lawsuit if the plaintiffs did not file an amended document under their true names within 30 days. The crime against Bell's son may have played a role in his decision in October to end his "Coast to Coast" program, which is broadcast from his home in Pahrump and has an estimated 15 million listeners on 462 stations nationwide. Bell's show deals with paranormal events, UFOs and other "X-Files"-like topics. It is described as originating from the "Kingdom of Nye." "You may recall about a year ago ... I told you that there was an event, a threatening terrible event occurred to my family, which I could not tell you about," Bell told his listeners on Oct. 13. "Because of that event, and a succession of other events, what you're listening to right now, is my final broadcast on the air. This is it, folks. I'm going off the air and will not return." But Bell did return to the airwaves on Oct. 28, although he remained mum about the reason for his departure. "That event occurred and became an absolute crisis on the night that I signed off, actually prior to it -- something that I thought would take my complete, full-time attention, and for a period of time of course it did ... and so it was a very sad thing for me," Bell said. Bell told listeners earlier this week that the reason for his October departure would soon become public. His son's lawsuit names former teacher Brian Lepley as a defendant, as well as the school district, Superintendent Geraldine Harge and Pahrump Valley High School Principal Jerry Hill. Lepley, 34, was sentenced in May 1998 to life in prison for engaging in sexual acts with Bell's then 16-year-old son, who is now an adult, and with an 18-year-old man. Prosecutors claimed Lepley, who is infected with the AIDS virus, supplied his victims with marijuana and alcohol on several occasions. The substitute teacher was charged in 1997 with 16 drug- and sex-related counts, including sexual assault and attempted transmission of the AIDS virus. At the time of the trial, neither of Lepley's victims had the virus. Lepley was convicted in April 1998 of most of the charges he faced. He admitted engaging in the sexual contact but adamantly denied he did anything criminal other than occasionally supplying underage boys with alcohol or marijuana. The AIDS charge stemmed from what Lepley described as a four-month relationship with the 18-year-old, who was never Lepley's student. The young man claimed Lepley did not inform him about his medical condition and did not use a condom; Lepley denied those allegations. One oral sex encounter with Bell's son resulted in a sexual assault conviction and the life sentence for Lepley. Lepley pleaded guilty in November 1998 to additional charges that stemmed from allegations that he had fondled a 14-year-old boy. Nye County District Attorney Bob Beckett estimated Lepley will be eligible for parole after spending about 15 years in prison. According to the lawsuit filed by Bell's son, the boy was a student at Pahrump Valley High School from August 1996 to May 1997. During that time, according to the complaint, Lepley was a substitute teacher in several of the boy's classes. The lawsuit claims the teen-ager "was sexually harassed by Lepley, who used his position of authority to intimidate and coerce" the boy. "In engaging in this conduct, Lepley was acting pursuant to NCSD's customs and practices, which for many years have permitted and condoned sexual relations between teachers and students," the document alleges. At least three other teachers have been accused of sexual misconduct with students at Pahrump Valley High School in recent years. One former teacher, Joseph Peterson, was sentenced in August 1996 to life in prison for raping a female student in his classroom. Arthur Bell IV's lawsuit claims Harge and Hill, as Lepley's supervisors, "were responsible for the policies which allowed Lepley to use his position with the NCSD to sexually harass" him. Even Hitler and Mussolini were, according to themselves. - David Low, 1946 Yellow ribbons, flag-waving, and parades down Main Street and bumper stickers reading "I support Desert Storm" and "God bless our troops," are all examples of how millions of Americans were swallowed up in the fervor of the Persian Gulf war in 1991. All are signs of an uninformed society which is the pawn of militaristic patriotism. Operation Desert Storm was a swift and sanitized war. None other had been so masterfully and adroitly orchestrated by the White House and CIA in the history of the United States. It was in this way that the government and the media portrayed it to the American people. Had it been a true United Nations war, it would have been carried out by the Security Council. Consequently, there was only one participant in Desert Storm, the United States. The impotent Iraqis sat back and took pounding after pounding until the infrastructure of their country was reduced to shambles. President George Bush continually stated that "oil was not the reason" for the American invasion; that Saddam Hussein was "worse than Hitler"; and that he would swallow up Saudi Arabia and perhaps most of the Middle East. American generals were feeding the people daily reports on commercial television. Americans were being told that sorties were hitting their targets, that primarily smart laser-guided bombs were being dropped, and that civilian areas were being avoided. Yet the American people were not told about Iraq's military impotence as a result of its eight- year war of attrition with Iran and that Saudi Arabia and Israel were the pillars of strength in the Middle East. Also, it was seldom explained that Iraq had several legitimate claims to Kuwait, since the Iraqi government never signed a border agreement with Kuwait; and that the emir of Kuwait had a human rights record just as dismal as that of Hussein. In the daily Pentagon briefings, Americans were told of the precision bombings carried out by American warplanes and missiles. The results were staggering. Approximately 200,000 Iraqi children died of injuries, diseases, and malnutrition due to the decimation of the country's infrastructure. Tens of thousands were left homeless. Later it was revealed that 70 percent of American bombs missed their targets, and only 7 percent were smart bombs. These "surgical bombings" incurred the death of thousands of civilians, and tens of thousands more were injured. In addition 20 percent of all Americans killed during Desert Storm were hit by "friendly fire." Americans are among the most naive people in the "civilized" world. Most do not know -- or do not want to know --that the United States has sent troops abroad 212 times since independence from Britain. The media report very few facts to the American public. Consequently, very few people know that since World War II the United States assisted in over 20 different coups throughout the world, and that the CIA was responsible for half a dozen assassinations of political heads of state. In addition, there have been 13 documented assassination attempts on the life of Fidel Castro, including one on the day of President John Kennedy's assassination. In most cases, the "enemies" were nationalistic nations which did not tolerate the exploitation of their people by American multinational corporations. The White House conveniently branded these popularly elected governments as communist in order to gain the support of the American public. At the same time policy has been to prop up dozens of right wing oppressive capitalistic dictatorships under the name of "democracy." Since the emergence of the Cold War, there has been continual misinformation and disinformation that the goal of the Soviet Union was world domination. On the contrary, it was the United States which not only surrounded the Soviets with its allies, but also immensely outdistanced the Soviets in Third World domination. The United States exported much more capitalism throughout the world for the benefit of multinational corporations than the Soviets exported socialism. In the past two decades alone, the United States was involved in wars or attacks in Nicaragua, Libya, Grenada, Lebanon, Panama, Somalia, Haiti, and most recently in

From article WSWS : Arts Review : Music and Literature The serious artist and the Cold War Underworld, by Don DeLillo, Scribner, New York, 1997, 827 pages, $27.50 (hard cover), $16.00 (paperback) By David Walsh 3 November 1998 "The conflict between these causes for despair and the rekindling of these obdurate yearnings results in this shuddering, which is peculiar to our times, the one that it is the function of art to register, since all we ask is for art to grasp at every moment what is in the air, so that it may isolate it on white-hot plates of elective metal."--André Breton, 1949 Anyone concerned about the fate of literature and society ought to welcome Don DeLillo's novel Underworld, a serious effort to trace out the impact on the American psyche of the Cold War, even if that attempt, in the end, falls considerably short. DeLillo, born in 1936, is a significant writer, the author of 10 previous novels. Underworld strikes me as his most interesting work by far. White Noise (1984), about a society overflowing with media-created images, is observant and occasionally quite amusing, but suffers from a somewhat self-consciously brittle tone that grows tiresome. This passage, in the book's first chapter, conveys something of its overall flavor: "I am chairman of the department of Hitler studies at the College-on-the-Hill. I invented Hitler studies in North America in March of 1968. It was a cold bright day with intermittent winds out of the east. When I suggested to the chancellor that we might build a whole department around Hitler's life and work, he was quick to see the possibilities. It was an immediate and electrifying success. The chancellor went on to serve as adviser to Nixon, Ford and Carter before his death on a ski lift in Austria." Libra (1988) is in many ways a remarkable and convincing fictionalized re-creation of the Kennedy assassination. Even if one differs with some of DeLillo's more dubious conclusions--for example, that Lee Harvey Oswald was a genuine left-winger swept up in the desire to be annihilated by history--his portraits of CIA men, Cuban exiles, Mafia gangsters and assorted lowlifes involved in the organization of the alleged conspiracy are indelible. The book won him the enmity of various figures within the political and media establishment. Right-wing columnist and television commentator George Will, that self-important snob, described Libra as "an act of literary vandalism and bad citizenship." He went on, "It is well to be reminded by books like this of the virulence of the loathing some intellectuals feel for American society, and of the frivolous thinking that fuels it." Will has attacked Underworld in similar language. This theme, that DeLillo badmouths the US and should be rebuked, perhaps punished, for doing so, has been advanced by numerous others. The Washington Post's Jonathan Yardley derided "DeLillo's ostentatiously gloomy view of American life and culture," in his review of Libra. In the New Criterion in 1985 one Bruce Bawer asserted that most of DeLillo's novels "were born out of a preoccupation with a single theme: namely, that contemporary American society is the worst enemy that the cause of human individuality and self-realization has ever had." Having earned the ire of this unattractive crowd is entirely to DeLillo's credit. Mao II (1991) represented a falling-off, it seems to me. A reclusive American novelist is asked to help in the effort to free a poet taken hostage in Beirut. Crowds--of Moonies, of Mao supporters, of Khomeini mourners, of British football fans--abound, but nothing much is made of them. The book exudes a general sense of revulsion with the existing state of affairs after a decade of Reagan and Thatcher, but its quasi-post-modernist pronouncements seem sharply off the mark. "Years ago," says the writer, "I used to think it was possible for a novelist to alter the inner life of the culture. Now bomb-makers and gunmen have taken that territory. They make raids on human consciousness." Unfortunately, the book and all its characters simply leave one cold. Underworld is an ambitious work.
