-Caveat Lector- Sounds fishy to me. ------------------ LONDON (AP) - Michael Jacob Montague, a businessman who was elevated to the House of Lords in 1997, died Friday shortly after collapsing in Parliament. He was 67. Fellow lords tried to resuscitate Lord Montague of Oxford as he slumped forward in his seat minutes after taking part in a debate on renewable energy. The house was immediately adjourned for the day. Montague died en route to a hospital, the Labor Party announced. As a major donor to Tony Blair's Labor Party, Montague was involved in controversy when he was made a peer by Blair less than four months after the prime minister's election. His peerage was dubbed by the opposition Conservative party as an example of "cash for coronets." Montague was born March 10, 1932, and educated at Oxford University. He started his business career as a traveling salesman of electric wire and then founded his own electrical firm, Gatehill Beco Ltd., at the age of 26. It was bought four years later by a company called Valor after his first million-dollar order from the United States. By 1965 he had risen - at the age of 33 - to become chairman of the National Export Council for Asia. He held that post for six years, traveling the world selling British products ranging from nuts and bolts to aircraft. He was awarded a CBE, or Citizen of the British Empire, by Queen Elizabeth II in 1970 in recognition of his services to the nation. Montague was chairman of the English Tourist Board from 1979 to 1984. During that time, he made outspoken attacks on what he regarded as "second rate" hoteliers, "greedy" seaside impresarios and "grubby" motorway caterers. He also criticized taxi drivers for taking large tips from tourists, museum attendants for being "miserable" and waiters for being "surly." And he urged the public to boycott places offering poor value for money. On leaving the tourist board, he became chairman of the National Consumer Council. Funeral arrangements were not immediately announced. __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!?
