If you actually read the history of the USS Liberty, you would know
that the USS Liberty was in a position to intercept Israel radio
communications regarding the seizing of the Golon Heights. President
Johnson was opposed to allowing Israel to take the Golon Heights, and
Israel viewed the USS Liberty as being in the perfect position to
enforce Johnson's agenda by forwarding intercepted communications to the
Arabs. In order to move on the Golon Heights, the USS Liberty had to be
neutralized.
And again, you demonstrate that you don't know what you are talking
about. The group commander did NOT "with fighters on ready, in easy
reach," stand down. He launched a flight of rescue aircraft towards USS
Liberty but was forced to recall them on direct orders from President
Johnson, who ordered the recall rather than allow the US to get dragged
into open conflict on the side of the Arabs.
In my view from studying the "official" version of the Liberty incident this
is a good approximation of what happened there. The Liberty was obviously
being used to intercept communications in the region, it's exact mission was
stated to be routine, but some of its equipment and paraphrenelia was not
disclosed, some of which must have been high tech listening devices as well
as radio jamming technology, and etc.
That the Israelis attacked the ship is itself an indictment against what was
going on there, they viewed it as an encroachment into their affairs and saw
it as a threat to their plans. I make no statement as to the rightness or
wrongness of the actions of the Israelis or the US in the situation but see
the above as a fair estimate of the real situation.
