PHILOSOPHERS DISCUSS LATEST NEWS

(CNNS, 01/09/99) -- With the continued jumble of news, CNNS once
more called upon its trio of unemployed philosophers -- Glaucon,
Polemarchus, and Thrasymachus -- to provide insight and analysis:

CNNS: Says here that this last Wednesday a bomb exploded at a
high school in Kansas City, and that 11 students were injured.
("Bomb Explodes At High School, Injures 11 Students," AP 1/6/99.)
And yesterday, some youngsters in Fort Worth stole some roosters
and then used pliers to rip off their beaks. ("Boys Accused of
Mutilating Roosters," AP, 1/8/99.) The suicide rate among teens
has gone sky-high. What does it all mean? What say you, Glaucon?

GLAUCON: Youth hath its exuberances. It is proper for youth to
be playful, with winter far away. But the spirit of rejoicing
knows no bounds, and the sky will not limit nor gravity oppress
the folly of the eaglet's premature flight.

POLEMARCHUS: But Glaucon, how then is it when winter invades the
season of youth? For the seasons are not constant, and the
honeybee oft freezes on the vine.

THRASYMACHUS: Then too, Friend Glaucon, the seasons of youth oft
are born in wintertime, so that some youth never know their true
season and are birthed in winter's cold.

GLAUCON: Aye. Many are the seasons, and many are the youth born
to them.

[Pause]

CNNS: Ummm All right. There's another story. "Ru Mills"
has reported that one of her sources foresees trouble for the
Federal Reserve, due to competition from the "Euro," a new
European currency. Then the Japanese finance minister went to
Europe last week; maybe the Japanese are worried about the Yen,
their currency. They must be worried about the Yen: they're in
an economic depression but they've raised their interest rates!!
Capital is being courted, worldwide, by 4 entities: the Euro,
the Yen, the stock markets, and the Federal Reserve. The
Dollar/Yen ratio has gone down, big-time, and it looks more and
more like Ru Mills's source could be correct when he said, "Kiss
the Federal Reserve good-bye." Is the dollar going to crash?

POLEMARCHUS: I've heard tell of this Ru Mills. She dwells far
off, in the Western Lands.
Friend Brian, consider this: when you get into the bath-tub,
do you not notice that the water rises?

CNNS: Yes, that's so.

THRASYMACHUS: And like the water in the bath-tub, is not the
stock market also rising?

CNNS: That also is true.

GLAUCON: Does this not mean that, for the stock market to rise,
something else must be displaced? For where the scale rises, it
rises not without cause. And since matter is constant, it
increases not.

CNNS: There's something in what you say.

THRASYMACHUS: Therefore, since the amount of matter in the
universe is constant, and since an increase in material in one
place always means a decrease of material someplace else, then Ru
Mills speaks true: the dollar is in trouble.

GLAUCON: Friend Brian, look not for a stock market crash -- not
just yet -- since all eyes look for that. Look instead to where
no eyes look; look to what force is pushing downward and thereby
causing the water to rise.

PHILOSOPHERS DISCUSS LATEST NEWS

(CNNS, 01/08/99) -- In the jumble of news events, it is hard to
make sense of it all. "What are 'they' up to?" asked this news
service in a recent editorial. CNNS put the question to three
unemployed philosophers, Glaucon, Polemarchus, and Thrasymachus.
Here is the transcript of that discussion.

CNNS: Says here, in National Enquirer, that Barbara Streisand is
terrified of a potential Y2K disaster and has turned her home
into an "armed fortress," and is about to hire armed guards to
patrol her house. ("Streisand's Millennium Meltdown," Nat.
Enquirer, 1/12/99.)

POLEMARCHUS: It is true, as the poet says, that "People who need
people are the luckiest people in the world." If she is hiring
guards, is that not, truly, that she is "needing people"?

GLAUCON: I cannot agree, Friend Polemarchus. For the guards are
there to keep people away.

THRASYMACHUS: Hold! For if Barbara is both "needing people" and
"not needing people" then here we have a fallacy. Therefore the
National Enquirer's story cannot be correct.

CNNS: Okay. Thanks for straightening that out.
Here's another story in the news. It says in New American
magazine that Linda Tripp, soon before testifying to a grand
jury, received a document from Monica Lewinsky. The document
listed "people who had died in and around the Clinton
administration." ("War Against Impeachment," New American,
1/18/99.) That document, in other words, was the so-called
"Clinton Body Count." What do you learned ones think about that?

GLAUCON: True friendship is a wonderful thing, for it withstands
time. To distinguish the real from illusion, know that only the
real is unchanged by time.

THRASYMACHUS: But is the friendship between Monica Lewinsky and
Linda Tripp real? For it has been changed by time.

POLEMARCHUS: And so, therefore, the friendship between them
never existed. For if time determines what is real, and if the
friendship was destroyed by time, then the friendship was not
real in the first place.

GLAUCON: Yes, Friend Polemarchus, you speak true. The one
confused the other with mathematics when she troubled Linda's
mind with a count of dead bodies, just when her mind was weighty
with other matters.

CNNS: Your words are filled with wisdom.
One last question. It says here that the CBS network program
"60 Minutes" aired a false documentary about drug smuggling in
Colombia. It says that the whole story was "fabricated" yet had
won "numerous journalism awards." ("60 Minutes Documentary A
Sham," New American, 1/18/99.)

THRASYMACHUS: This program, "60 Minutes": Does it in fact allot
60 minutes to its reports?

CNNS: No, they really only give about 45 minutes.

GLAUCON: Then that means that the very title of the program is a
lie?

CNNS: Yes, that seems true.

POLEMARCHUS: Then, Friend CNNS, since the very title of the
program, "60 Minutes," is a lie, it must follow that their
reports are also lies. Is this not so?

CNNS: You speak truly.
