Ready For Pope Potato Chips?

MEXICO CITY (Reuters) - Remember Pope-on-a-Rope-Soap? Well, get ready for
papal potato chips.

A Mexican potato chip company is helping local Roman Catholic Church officials
raise funds for Pope John Paul II's four-day visit this month by adding
photographs of the pope or the Virgin of Guadeloupe inside each bag of
Sabritas brand potato chips.

For two pesos, or about 20 cents, collectors can purchase a special album from
Sabritas to hold 10 different pictures. Proceeds from the album sales will go
to the Catholic Church in Mexico. If all nine million albums are sold, that
would mean 18 million pesos, or about $1.8 million, for the church.

The pope's visit is expected to cost about $1.2 million.

At a news conference, church spokesman Hector Fernandez assured the faithful
that ``the Holy Father will not be linked to the advertising campaign nor will
he go out dressed as a potato.''

In Spanish, the word for pope and potato is the same: papa. It was not clear
if a pun was intended.

Asked if it was a bit cheeky to drop a picture of the pope into a bag of
chips, Fernandez said no. ``It's not a promotional event,'' but instead
designed to spread the pope's message to every corner of Mexico, he said.

Sabritas officials said they did not expect to increase sales or make extra
profits off the campaign, even though Mexicans love to plaster images of the
Virgin and the pope on everything from taxis and buses to lunch boxes and
window displays.
