VANCOUVER - This article by Mitch Battros suggests that NASA may have intentionally suppressed data of the coronal mass ejection (CME) on June 1. That solar explosion was not made public until June 7, in a surprise report by the BBC. If NASA did in fact suppress public data of the June 1 solar explosion, the relevance to the Cassini spacecraft mission may be quite ominous. The June 1 solar explosion provides a substantial, justified scientific reason why the Cassini mission must be re-directed! This Cassini implications of this solar explosion must be presented to international bodies and governments, and made public, immediately. NASA may have in fact covered up the June 1 solar explosion precisely because it know that increased Cassini risks evidenced by such an explosion would force the re-direction of the Cassini spacecraft. If a similar solar explosion were to occur after the June 24 Venus flyby, the results could be catastrophic for Earth. A olar explosion then could disable Cassini's communication equipment, and turn th Cassini spacecraft into a virtual plutonium bomb headed straight for Earth. This is not an exaggeration. It is the probable scientific consequence of another solar explosion. That is precisely why NASA may have covered up - in unprecedented fashion - public knowledge of the June 1 solar explosion. PLEASE UNDERSTAND THERE MAY BE DEEP OFFICIAL MALICE INVOLVED HERE. We urge you to bring this new knowledge forward to international and US channels to stop what is emerging as a travesty in the exploration of outer space, and in the integrity of NASA's obligations to fully report relevant scientific space information. One of our viewers sent in an email stating she noticed NASA had omitted, or erased, JUNE 1ST data on the link below. This just happens to be the date of the C.M.E. (coronal mass ejection). Also take note, it was the BBC (British Broadcasting Corporation) that broke the story. Nothing from our own national networks. I would like your help in this investigation. If you know of a web site,or perhaps someone working for NASA that can explain the reason for the omission of this date, please forward. Also, send information as to why NASA did not disclose this information to the public at, or before, the time of this event. Is it NASA's policy to NOT disclose potentially deadly, or at least severely disruptive events? It is not only solar flares were we have seen this omission before. See EcoNews Service response to SOHO, posted on IUFO on separate post. No satisfactory answer had yet emerged for the 7 day (June 1 to 7) delay in public reporting of the CME solar explosion. BBC was the first to report it, not US media, which are usually space-oriented. The entity with the most to gain in any suppression of the June 1 solar event is in fact NASA, as a solar explosion of this magnitude would rasie reasonable doubts as to the wisdom of continuing the Cassini Earth flyby after its June 24 Venus flyby. Certainly SOHO provided us no satisfactory answers to these issues when they wrote us, and the fellow that wrote us was directly involved in initial monitoring of the June 1 CME (see correspondence in SOHO post). Our experience is that manipulation of the media on space issues does occur in the United States in particular, and we stand by our story. Thankfully, a growing number of US media outlets are contacting us for details. But your uncharacteristic reaction does not help ferret out the truth. We appreciate your first-hand knowledge of the CME event, and your willingness to share the events you witnessed, not to mention your personal honesty and integrity. The continuing risk for Cassini remains, however, and you yourself summed up some of the unknowables: Because I don't design spacecraft for a living, I don't know how vulnerable Cassini might be to a coronal mass ejection from the Sun. I do know that deep-space probes are carefully designed with just that type of disturbance in mind. SOHO, which is outside the Earth's protective magnetic field, has weathered countless such events without a hitch, as have the Voyager probes from the 1970s, the recent Venus orbiter that mapped the surface of that planet, and innumerable other bits of NASA hardware flying around the solar system. The concerns for the Cassini flyby after its June 24 Venus flyby are multiple and remain, especially during the period of high solar event risk through January 2001. Our understanding is that more advanced, safer solar power packs were available in the design phase, and were overruled in favour of the plutonium RTG's, for reasons which remain obscure, and which are not justified by the environmental risks involved. Moreover, you may not be aware that the Cassini Earth flyby (Aug. 18) is scheduled just a week after the Aug. 11 Solar Eclipse, the last of this century. This timing adds immeasurably to Cassini's risk. Failure to cancel the flyby means Cassini is scheduled to threaten Earth on Aug. 17, 1999. In the event of a miscalculation, electrical failure, an impact from space debris or a solar storm, NASA could lose control of the probe so that it may collide with Earth's atmosphere.
