Rock Royalty to Join Voices Against Bush With Fall Concerts

Musicians will perform in swing states to try to affect
election. Playing for a cause is a tradition, but injecting
political views can be risky.

By Geoff Boucher

July 25, 2004 by the Los Angeles Times

http://www.commondreams.org/headlines04/0725-02.htm

Bruce Springsteen, Neil Young, R.E.M., Pearl Jam and a deep
roster of other rock stars will unite for politically minded
concerts this fall that will give voice to dissatisfaction
with the Bush administration.

The all-star rock shows, which are expected to begin in
October and target campaign swing states, are in the planning
stage but were confirmed by half a dozen music industry
sources who spoke on condition of anonymity.

Insiders disagree on the unifying rhythm of the celebrity
coalition. Some say it is the promise of the John F. Kerry
candidacy, but at least one emphasizes the fear of President
Bush's reelection. There is a range of feeling about Kerry,
the source said, but a uniform belief that Bush must go.

The tour turns up the volume of the rock scene's role in
politics, but it is not the only example of an apparent surge
of commentary among artists. Rockers seem virtually unanimous
in their anti-Bush stance, just as country music has seen a
wave of passionate patriotism and support for the president,
exemplified by the songs of Toby Keith.

MTV has been showing a video by the British dance-pop outfit
Faithless that features a teen shipped off to Iraq only to
return home wounded and disillusioned. Representing a
different generation, Tom Waits and John Fogerty have
recorded songs about Iraq. For Waits, it's the first
political song of his four-decade career; for Fogerty, it's a
return to his Vietnam-era songs such as Who'll Stop the
Rain.

Elsewhere, rapper Sean P. Diddy Combs is steering a new
voter registration drive, and the usually bratty punk-pop
band Green Day has said its next album will be a political
concept piece. Steve Earle has a new album laced with songs
about Iraq and Bush and even a mocking valentine to national
security advisor Condoleezza Rice. Blues player Keb Mo has an
upcoming album of peace songs, including John Lennon's
Imagine and Buffalo Springfield's For What It's Worth.

Introducing political commentary into music is sometimes a
risky prospect — even if it's just a passing reference.

Last weekend, Linda Ronstadt was booed in Las Vegas for
praising a Bush nemesis, filmmaker Michael Moore, while Ozzy
Osbourne relented to critics and removed concert imagery that
showed Bush and Hitler together on an overhead screen.

The countercultural mind-set and recklessness once at the
core of rock music now seem relegated to the distant past,
Elton John told Interview magazine. He said that protest had
often given way to strict careerism in this corporate age.

There's an atmosphere of fear in America right now, and that
is deadly, John said. Everyone is too career-conscious.
They're all too scared…. Things have changed.

Tom Morello, guitarist with Rage Against the Machine and once
a staffer to the late California Democratic Sen. Alan
Cranston, is a veteran of politics-meets-rock. I'm not
surprised you're seeing this music being made, and I'm not
surprised it's connecting with an audience, he said. It's
not just people who write songs — carpenters, teachers,
everyone is ready for a regime change.

Morello was cited by some sources as a probable participant
in the concert series, but he declined to confirm plans for
the shows.

No album or song is likely to capture as much media attention
as the concerts involving Springsteen in swing states, which
are expected to take place in arenas.

Organizers have been tight-lipped since discussions of the
idea caught the ears of some of the stars in April. At the

[CTRL] Protests rock Pakistan (fwd)

2001-09-21 Thread Yardbird

-Caveat Lector-

Assalamu'alaikum,

Protests rock Pakistan

http://www.guardian.co.uk/wtccrash/story/0,1300,555779,00.html

Staff and agencies
Friday September 21, 2001

Angry protests in Pakistan brought parts of the country to a virtual
standstill today as demonstrators rallied behind Islamic groups.
Shops were closed and transport suspended as demonstrators made their
voices heard in response to a nationwide strike called by Muslim clerics.

It is the fifth consecutive day of protests in the country, but by far the
most dramatic with police, their numbers boosted, firing tear gas into
some boisterous crowds.

Protestors are acting against their government's pledge on Wednesday to
support American military strikes against neighbouring Afghanistan, where
Osama bin Laden, the chief suspect in last week's terrorist attacks in
America, is defended by the Taliban.

Despite ongoing negotiations Afghanistan's ambassador to Pakistan, Abdul
Salam Zaeef, announced today that Taliban rulers will not hand over Bin
Laden without evidence. Asked if the Taliban would deliver him, said,
No, but his translator added, No, not without evidence.

Pakistanis near the Afghan border vowed to launch a war against Americans.

Thousands of protesters swarmed the streets of Peshawar, in the north
west, shouting anti-American and anti-Pakistani slogans. Burning a
life-size effigy of the US president they shouted: Long live Osama.

We will fight until the death and destruction of the United States, one
sign read. Crush America and Bush, read another.

Hardline Islamic clerics fuelled the strength of feeling and told their
listeners that they backed bin Laden and the Taliban leadership, which has
protected him and his followers in Afghanistan for years.

Hundreds of people watched the procession from rooftops and balconies in a
city where most people are Pashtun, the same ethnic group predominating
among the Taliban, and where there are two million Afghan refugees.

Heavily armed police, estimated at 15,000, patrolled the city on foot and
in tanks.

Violence flared in Karachi, the country's biggest city and its commercial
hub. The largest incident was in the Sohrab Goth neighbourhood, where an
estimated 1,500 Afghan refugees clashed with police, burning tyres and
attacking vehicles.

In other parts of Karachi, police were forced to fire tear gas and beat
people with iron-tipped sticks to disperse crowds pelting vehicles with
stones and blocking roads. At least 70 demonstrators were arrested, police
said.

In other parts of the country such as the south west city of Quetta,
Lahore and Islamabad, the capital, police were on guard, many in riot
gear, but protests had not begun. Most shops and schools were ordered to
close for their own safety.

The general strike also closed schools, offices and shops in the northern
Indian state of Jammu-Kashmir, where Islamic rebels are fighting for
independence with the support of Pakistan.

America has agreed to lift sanctions imposed on Pakistan and India and to
reschedule $600m (410m) in bilateral debt with Islamabad, a senior western
diplomat said today.

The diplomat, who asked not to be identified, said that discernible
progress would be seen soon.

Details of the surprise deal are reportedly being finalised at the moment
and will allow a resumption of American assistance to Pakistan, which
ended after sanctions were imposed for the nuclear tests it carried out in
1998.

The news come after a fruitless year of talks under the Paris Club to
reschedule Pakistan's bilateral debt.

America will sign an agreement on rescheduling $600m worth of debt, part
of Pakistan's $1.6bn debt considered by the Paris Club, in a move seen by
many as a reward for Pakistan in return for its support of the US over its
expected attacks against Pakistan's neighbour, Afghanistan.

The US has turned to Pakistan because of its critical geographical
position, on the border with Afghanistan and its ties to the Taliban
regime.

The Afghan Defence Council, an alliance of 35 religious and militant
groups, has warned the Pakistani leader, general Musharraf, that his
decision to back America could plunge the country into civil war.

With almost a week of protests, which are becoming increasingly heated,
and American strikes imminent, many Pakistanis fear civil war is
inevitable.

Yesterday, a grand Islamic council in Afghanistan met at the request of
the Taliban leadership and took the decision to ask Bin Laden to leave
voluntarily.

It is not yet known if he will comply, or if a war could be averted even
if he did.

[CTRL] Little Rock arrests/ Gary Condit lunch partner 30 APRIL

2001-07-01 Thread Jenny Decker

For example, on April 30, the last day Levy
was seen, Condit was picked upby staff, had lunch at the White House and
worked in Congress for fourhours before heading home for dinner with his
wife.
I don't understand the reference to Condit having
lunch at the White House on April 30. What is the verified source of this info?
He's supposed to have had lunch with Dan Lasater, the Clinton cronies'
chief "Disappearer" even in Arkansas well before the Presidency (see forwarded
email below).
If he did eat with Lasater, it
points almost too clearly to an organized hit on Chandra, designed to keep her
from blabbing, either to her parents or to his wife. I would wager there is a
tacit "dissappearance" service for favoured high govt. officials, just as there
are tacit excort services. You can trust them to be silent because their very
profitable business depends on it, and in court by organized agreement one will
lie and all the others will swear to it, thus "validating" their
testimony.
 Under these conditions, her body
will be very hard to find as they could have done anything with it. A possible
list:

sent to a meat packing plant (see Gary Condit's
list of California agricultural contributors!)

donated to a teaching hospital for student use;
quickly dismembered for school use so unrecognizeable.

Switcheroo--Chandra's body is misidentified by some
bribed morgue underling and buried in some other person's grave. Then the other
person's body could be donated or disposed off without raising a police alarm,
since the other person is not being looked for. In all likelihood, police have
already done DNA tests on her and could test any suspicious remains, so this
method seems promising (from the murderer's viewpoint!)

  Dan Lasater was a bond
broker in Little Rock who got busted for possession of cocaine, and for
giving it to teenage girls at an apartment in Little Rock in 1985. Lasater
paid for the apartment, but Bill Clinton's brother, Roger, actually lived
there. Roger was also busted. Lasater did some time in the federal
slammer, while Roger was confined to a half-way house. While Lasater
was in prison, his side-kick, Patsy Thomasson, ran his bond brokerage.
When Clinton was elected, he brought Ms. Thomasson to the White House in
1993, as "Director of Administration" (i.e., head of security). Later on,
Lasater started "Phoenix Mortgage Company," in Little Rock, which was a
drug-money laundry. For a short time, after he got out of jail,
Lasater lived at a lodge in the woods in western Arkansas, near Mena. The
property was owned by International Paper Co., one of the Rose Law Firm's
biggest clients. Hillary Clinton, Webb Hubbell, and Vince Foster were
partners at the Rose firm at the time. Lasater ran his money laundering
operation from the lodge. Lasater has been a close friend of Bill
Clinton's for years. He was also very close to the late James McDougal (of
Madison Guaranty Savings Loan fame). Lasater is described by Chip
Tatum (an ex-Army pilot who, unwittingly it appears, flew numerous drug
runs to and from Central America in the '80s for Lasater and the Dixie
Mafia), as being the "Dr. Lasater" to whom certain cargo was delivered
from time to time in Arkansas. That cargo was usually in the form of large
styrofoam coolers marked "Medical Supplies." According to Tatum, one of
the coolers fell onto the tarmac, while it was in the process of being
loaded onto Tatum's helicopter, and burst open. The contents clearly had
"medicinal value," but could hardly have been accurately described as
being "Medical Supplies." The coolers contained tightly wrapped bags of
raw cocaine. Tatum relates that shortly after that happened, he
arrived at an airport near Little Rock, and was introduced to "Dr.
Lasater" (to whom the coolers were being shipped), Governor Clinton, and a
third man who became Clinton's FEMA Director in 1993. The three were there
to meet the helicopter. Anyone who has more and/or better information
should certainly feel free to redact what I've written. R.
  Odom

Woodstock '99 Phish

And for those interested in the Woodstock '99 - Phish connection:

FANS FIND SOMETHING FISHY ABOUT PHISH CONCERTS

DENVER (Wireless Flash) -- There's something fishy about the band Phish --
at least if you believe a man who's been to more than 30 of the group's
psychedelic shows.

23-year-old Dan Hinman claims he's witnessed all sorts of odd behavior at
the concerts and has concluded that the shows might be mind control
experiments conducted by the government. Hinman says the band plays very
unique hypnotic tones and notes which frequently transform the audience into
a group of willing zombies.

Even more suspicious, the band has held several concerts at military bases
where mind control projects are supposedly underway.

Hinman believes the government might be experimenting with a method to
control the youth of America by making them more passive.

He claims the sad thing is that most Phish fans are so devoted to the band,
they refuse to believe the concerts could be mind control experiments.

Beatles, Rock Roll and Mind Control
http://user.tninet.se/~gbl020q/influential_rock_music.htm

I am one of those who grew up with The Beatles, Rolling Stones, Bob Dylan,
Neil Young, Black Sabbath, Alice Cooper, Led Zeppelin etc. I thought it was
GREAT music and I was totally into it.

I am a musician and a composer myself, influenced from the artists and
groups above. At that time, in my teens and twenties I was not very well
educated on the situation on this planet, even though I thought something
must be very wrong. Often I thought the rock musicians had the answers...

I know many of you might feel the same and therefore you may get upset about
what I'm now going to tell you. But believe me, I've gone through all that
myself, and after all - I WAS a rock musician too. The story, though, that I
will tell you makes a whole lot of sense (unfortunately) and the glamour of
rock music fades quite a bit.

The following is an excerpt from Dr. John Coleman's excellent book "The
Committee of 300", which is very informative on the subject of the
Illuminati and is highly recommended. Very much of what he "predicted" in
the early 80's happened exactly the way he said it would. The book in itself
is from the early 90's.

The Beatles and the

Aquarian Conspiracy

An outstanding example of social conditioning to accept change, even when it
is recognized as unwelcome change by the large population group in the
sights of Stanford Research Institute, was the "advent" of the BEATLES. The
Beatles were brought to the United States as part of a social experiment
which would subject large population groups to brainwashing of which they
were not even aware.

When Tavistock brought the Beatles to the United States nobody could have
imagined the cultural disaster that was to follow in their wake. The Beatles
were an integral part of "THE AQUARIAN CONSPIRACY," a living organism which
sprang From "THE CHANGING IMAGES OF MAN," URH (489)-2150-Policy Research
Report No. 4/4/74. Policy Report pre-pared by SRI Center for the study of
Social Policy, Director, Professor Willis Harmon.

The phenomenon of the Beatles was not a spontaneous rebellion by youth
against the old social system. Instead it was a carefully crafted plot to
introduce by a conspiratorial body which could not be identified, a highly
destructive and divisive element into a large population group targeted for
change against its will. New words and new phrases--prepared by
Tavistock(1)-- were introduced to America along with the Beatles. Words such
as "rock" in relation to music sounds, "teenager," "cool," "discovered" and
"pop music" were a lexicon of disguised code words signifying the acceptance
of drugs and arrived with and accompanied the Beatles wherever they went, to
be "discovered" by "teenagers." Incidentally, the word "teenagers" was never
used until just before the Beatles arrived on the scene, courtesy of the
Tavistock Institute for Human Relations.

As in the case of gang wars, nothing could or would have been accomplished
without the cooperation of the media, especially the electronic media and,
in particular, the scurrilous Ed Sullivan who had been coached by the
conspirators as to the role he was to play. Nobody would have paid much
attention to the motley crew from Liverpool and the 12-atonal system of
"music" that was to follow had it not been for an overabundance of press
exposure. The 12-atonal system consisted of heavy, repetitive sounds, taken
from the music of the cult of Dionysus and the Baal priesthood by Adorno and
given a "modern" flavor

for the South by peaceful, constitutional means - could take
generations or never happen at all, they cite the recent success
of devolutionary movements elsewhere, including in Britain, as a
reason they cannot just be dismissed as a crowd of irresponsible
 nostalgics.

The scene in the select resort village of Flat Rock was the
epitome of the southern idyll: a vast weathered gazebo on the
lush lawn of a glistening white southern mansion; the heat of the
summer sun fanned by a cooling breeze.

A few of the men wore grey Confederate uniforms, a few of the
women wore crinolines, but the new political activists who had
paid $50 (pounds 33) each for the privilege of assisting at the
birth of "their" party mostly wore the costumes of today - summer
 suits and dresses.

As befitted a southern gathering, proceedings opened and closed
with prayers - "Lord, show us the direction we need to go"- but
the climax was the ceremonial presentation of the flags of 14
southern states and the signing of the "Asheville Declaration",
named after the nearby city. It was endorsed by volleys of musket
fire across the valley and loud "hurrahs".

The leading light of the new party is George Kalas, the son of a
Greek immigrant father and a mother of staunch Confederate stock,
 and just 37.

For him, and the party's three other founding fathers, the time
is right for the South to assert itself.

Registered in Houston, Texas, the party is already organising in
all 18 southern states, and so much advance interest was shown in
this weekend's founding rally that people had to be turned away.
To the devoted southerners, their beloved and maligned South is
resurgent. Southerners hold many of the most important offices of
state. Interest in Confederate history is at record levels,
judging by a slew of films, the popularity of visits to
battlefield sites and amateur participation in Civil War re-
enactments. Last year's anniversary of the Battle of Gettysburg
inspired more than 18,000 people to wear period costume to fight
 it all over again.

A large part of the rationale for the new party is economic
self-confidence. "The South is becoming strong again. We're
becoming a financial giant again, and that's why we're here,"
Jerry Baxley, the party's vice-chairman, told the assembled
 throng in his opening speech.

What many see as the moral bankruptcy of the Washington "regime"
 is another powerful ingredient.

The most compelling reason cited by the party's founders for
their timing, though, is what they see as the stunning success of
nationalist movements in Canada and Britain. "Thirty years ago
they [the political Establishment] were laughing at the
Quebecois. Ten years ago they were laughing at the population of
Wales and Scotland for advocating their own parliaments. They're
not laughing any more," said one enthusiast.

Mr Kalsa said: "We couldn't have done this 10 years ago. There
would have been no media interest." And he credited the Internet
with "making it a more level playing field" for non-establishment
 groups.

A new South could be seen as unrealistic, especially in view of
the fervent opposition of black Americans to anything that smacks
 of the traditional Confederacy.

But while the new party's platform builds on the complex of
southern sympathies and resentments, it makes a determined effort
 to strike out the racism.

When Mr Kalas enumerated its guiding principles - for: devolution
and moral leadership from politicians; against: abortion, gun
controls and federal taxes - his denunciation of racism drew a
volume of applause second only to his rejection of the tax
 system.

"There is no room for those who harbour racial malice towards
their fellow southerners," he said. "The politics of race have
reached a dead end." The Southern Party, he said, "is an idea
that all southerners should be proud to embrace".

There remains, however, a distinct ambiguity, enshrined in the
 party's careful choice of flag.

The "third" Confederate flag belongs to the late period of the
Civil War when black volunteers were taken into Confederate ranks
 - showing, according to Mr Kalas and the others, that an end to
slavery was an accepted precondition for the survival of the
 Confederacy.

This is not the standard Confederate flag. It is red and white

 Gibraltar embarks on risky alliance

 By Elizabeth Nash in Gibraltar

The Chief Minister of Gibraltar, Peter Caruana, has plunged into a
dangerous liaison with Jesus Gil, the flamboyant and controversial
mayor of Marbella, whose right-wing party is advancing throughout
southern Spain. The two men sealed their friendship with a pact this
week that will infuriate Madrid and prompt jitters in London.

The rapprochement was struck in Gibraltar amidst a furore surrounding
Mr Gil, who is accused by Madrid's chief prosecutor of conniving with
a Marbella judge to launder money for the Sicilian Mafia. Mr Caruana
brushed aside doubts about Mr Gil's honesty, saying that was an
internal Spanish matter and that nothing was proven.

The two men will develop economic, cultural and sporting links between
Gibraltar and neighbouring regions of Spain controlled by Mr Gil's
Independent Liberal Group (GIL). Mr Gil, a populist rabble-rouser on
bail for fraud, and Mr Caruana, the dapper lawyer, make an incongruous
couple. But their opportunist alliance could mark the start of a
beautiful friendship. They are astute and pragmatic politicians with a
 talent for an electoral flourish.

They planned to meet over lunch on Thursday in a harbourside
restaurant on the Rock, but at the last minute Mr Gil backed out,
leaving fellow GIL members, his son Jesus Gil Marin, who is mayor of
Estepona, and Juan Carlos Juarez, the mayor of La Linea which borders
Gibraltar, as Mr Caruana's only guests.

In local elections on 13 June, Mr Juarez swept into La Linea from
nowhere to win a landslide victory. In GIL's swanky offices in La
Linea yesterday locals queued to sign up. "None of the other parties
ever did anything for us, let's hope GIL [or Gil] can turn La Linea
into another Marbella," one enthusiast said.

But Mr Gil has problems. He is on £420,000 bail, charged with
funnelling some 450m pesetas (£2m) of Marbella's public funds to
Atletico Madrid football club, which he owns. On Wednesday night he
was warned that if he left Spain he could be arrested on his return,
 and forfeit his bail.

So on Thursday lunchtime, he ventured no further than the border.
There he told assembled press and a gaggle of fans how sorry he was to
miss Mr Caruana, "because he's a good man you can talk to and
 negotiate with".

But had he not realised that he would face penalties for leaving the
country while on bail? Mr Gil turned on a sunny smile and grasped my
hand warmly. "Perhaps I was naive, but it honestly didn't occur to me
because I'm totally innocent. It's a shame because they're over there
waiting for me." He added: "I want to make La Linea the envy of the
 costa."

Sceptics suspect a publicity stunt, and Mr Gil lost no time in
denouncing the state prosecutors as "base-born assassins" for accusing
him of Mafia links. However, Mr Caruana is keen to have an
interlocutor in Spain and has long said he could do business with Mr
Gil. Gibraltar's Chief Minister is fed up with being cold-shouldered
by Spain's Foreign Minister, Abel Matutes, who talks only to London.

Mr Caruana wants to boost Gibraltarian business in Spain, and Mr Gil's
ideology-free policy of promoting investment, especially in real
estate, offers tempting opportunities. Residents of La Linea like the
idea, too, scenting escape from decades of depression and unemployment
that runs at 35 per cent, the highest in Spain.

Gibraltar is the region's main employer, and some 3,000 Spaniards
cross every day to work in hotels and bars on the Rock. Otherwise, La
Linea's principle activity is drug trafficking, mainly hashish from
nearby Morocco, and increasingly heroin and cocaine.

Mr Gil promised yesterday to clean up the drugs, sweep criminals off
the streets and bring prosperity to La Linea. This formula bounced him
to power in Marbella eight years ago, and brought subsequent gains
along the coast and in the Spanish enclaves of Ceuta and Melilla in
Morocco just across the Gibraltar Strait.

La Linea could do with a face-lift. While the rest of the coast is
cluttered with marble villas, golf links, timeshare complexes and
casinos, La Linea looks more like a Paraguayan frontier town, scruffy
and neglected, although with a gorgeous long beach, ripe for
 development.

The new mayor, Mr Juarez, has taken personal control of urbanisation
and relations with Gibraltar as priorities for his new mandate, and Mr
Gil has openly declared Gibraltarians welcome in Marbella. Such
gestures of friendship from Spain - which avoid the thorny question of
sovereignty - are much appreciated on the Rock.

In his dark suit, Mr Caruana stayed cool and elegant by Gibraltar's
yacht marina that looked positively Marbella-esque with its fleets of
gleaming pleasure craft. He said Mr Gil's party had achieved many
improvements in the areas it ruled. He added that he hoped to meet Mr
Gil very soon, "whenever he wants" -

"Go tell it on the mountain" used to be a popular expression, meaning
that if you had an important message to convey, it was worth your time
and effort to go atop the nearest mountain and
shout it out to the masses. That, in a nutshell, is the mission of
the Alternate Joint Communications Center. The mountain
happens to be known as Raven Rock, and the
masses are the strategic nuclear war fighters
of the United States of America.

"Site-R" is the location designator for a major US military
bunker located inside Raven Rock Mountain, next to the community of
Fountain Dale, near Blue Ridge Summit in Adams County Pennsylvania. The
complex is also known as "the underground Pentagon," and affectionately
to its personnel as "the Rock" or "the Hole," but the official name is
the Alternate Joint Communications Center (AJCC). Over radio circuits,
the facility is known as WAR-46 (permanent callsign), and MARCONI
(permanent callword). The site is most well known as housing the
Alternate National Military Command Center (ANMCC), and the Site-R
complex is often referred to as being the ANMCC. However, the ANMCC is
just a specific facility and mission within the Alternate Joint
Communications Center. The ANMCC is now officially known as National
Military Command Center - Site-R.

HISTORY

The AJCC became operational on 30 June 1953, a little over two years
after the construction plans were approved by the Joint Chiefs of Staff.
The initial concept of an emergency relocation site for the Pentagon was
proposed in a May 15,1948 memorandum to Secretary of Defense James V.
Forrestal by his senior military advisors responsible for war planning
and preparedness -- the Joint Chiefs of Staff (JCS). The Cold War had
just begun, in March of 1948 President Truman even announced to Congress
that the USSR and communism was a clear present threat to the
USA. With their new TU-4 bombers (exact copies of the US B-29) JCS were
concerned that the Soviets would soon be capable of a Pearl Harbor-style
sneak attack on Washington would decimate America's senior military
command capability. The Pentagon was soft-target, easily recognizable by
high altitude bombers, and it was assumed that the enemy -- the USSR --
would have intercontinental ballistic missiles at some point in the
1950s, though it caught the U.S. by surprise when the Russians detonated
their first nuclear weapon on 29 August, 1949.

One of the location requirements that the alternate site had to meet
was to be located far enough from Washington DC that a concentrated
attack on Washington wouldn't damage the bunker. Yet another was that
the site still be close enough to the Washington area so that the Joint
Chiefs of Staff, their support personnel, known as the Joint Staff, and
other senior military and civilian officials could be quickly evacuated
to it by ground transportation or helicopter. A further complication in
this 'not to close, not too far' location strategy was that the facility
shouldn't be situated near the plethora of other important military and
federal government sites which would probably be targeted -- the Norfolk
Virginia navy facilities, Andrews Air Force Base in Camp Springs,
Maryland, etc.

Placement inside a mountain provides several advantages, such as:

Less likely to be observed during construction than digging a big pit
into flat ground.

Easier to tunnel sideways deep into granite than dig downward deep into
soil.

The mountain interior provides a natural equivalent to building a
facility with thousand foot thick hardened concrete walls.

Top of the mountain can be used as an antenna site, eliminating the need
for large antenna towers.

While several sites were studied, Raven Rock was clearly the best in
terms of location from DC, and geological factors (super hard greenstone
granite composition). Additionally, a perfect support base -- Camp
Ritchie, was just a few miles away in Cascade Maryland. President Truman
gave final approval for the 'Fort Ritchie - Raven Rock Site' project in
May of 1950, and the Department of Defense started acquiring 718 acres
of land from over 30 individual property holders. While most of the land
was sold to the US Government in 1950, transfers via condemnation
weren't complete until 1954. Initial wording of the condemnation
proceedings were vague. The United States needed the land "...to
adequately provide for the establishment of facilities for the use of
the Department of the Army and for other military uses incident thereto.
...and other such uses as may be authorized by Congress or Executive
Order. ...lands are required for immediate use."

Obviously, by this time the locals knew something was going on. If
they didn't learn about the land being
