Roy, I was fascinated to read this report about the Vatican radiating the surrounding communities in Rome. When the late Dr. John Goldsmith met with a group of us in San Francisco in August of 1998, he had just returned from a meeting of the International Association of Environmental Epidemiologists. There was a report circulating about the cancer clusters in Rome at that meeting. Dr. Goldsmith predicted we would be hearing more about the cancer clusters around that "major broadcast tower in Rome" soon. Well, here it is, all fully documented, I hope. I agree with Cheryl, though. The church is run like a business in my experience. The Catholic Archdiosese signed on in early 1997 for the revenue producing cell towers on Catholic schools in the Los Angeles area. I doubt the U.S. cardinals and bishops are going to heed the Pope's call for prudent avoidance and break business contracts. Would love to be surprised to learn differently however! From now on, when the Pope calls for total disarmament, greater humanity to man, and more compassionate and peaceful solutions to the world's problems, it will be jarring to note that many of the churches we attend for sanctuary and community worship are also radiating their surrounding communities and causing harm. Re: [CTRL] Vatican Cancer Cluster
Electronic Telegraph, Wednesday April 19, 2000: Vatican Radio programmes are broadcast all over the world from a forest of antennae at Santa Maria di Galera, near Cesano, a northern suburb of Rome. Residents have reported the complex to magistrates dozens of times and doctors who examined the cause of 7,500 deaths over six years in Cesano found the incidence of tumours was 30 per cent higher than the national average. Roy Beavers (EMFguru) [EMAIL PROTECTED] -- Forwarded message -- From: Neil Cherry [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: "[EMAIL PROTECTED]" [EMAIL PROTECTED] Date: Fri, 21 Apr 2000 Subj: Vatican radio cancer Dear Roy, When I was in Rome last December I met the author of a paper on leukaemia around the Vatican radio tower. The abstract of that paper is here. (Below) It confirms the UK studies of Dolk et al. (1997) in the American Journal of Epidemiology. In that case the authors did not appreciate that the only cancer which was high near the tower and then declines with distance, was adult leukaemia at the Sutton Coldfield tower. It was the only high powered tower, in a high population area with FM radio transmissions. FM radio irradiates the ground inside 1 km but the UHF TV transmissions peak outside 1 km in a broad, undulating fashion, just like the leukaemia at all the other towers. Hence the Dolk studies show consistent results of leukaemia and many other cancers that follow the radial RF radiation patterns. With this results and the Hocking et al (1996) result, it is indicative of a causal relationship between extremely low mean intensity RF exposure and cancer, especially leukaemia. Regards Neil Cherry - 1998 Annual conference of ISEE and ISEA Epidemiology, July 1998, Vol 9, Number 4, Supplement 354 P RISK OF LEUKENUA AND RESEDENCE NEAR A RADIO TRANSMNTER IN ITALY. P Micholozzi. C Ancona, D Fusco, F Forastiere, CA Perucci. Department of Epidemiology, Regional Health Authority, Ronie, Italy. Background: An association between leukaemia and exposure to low frequency magnetic fields has been reported in several studies. On this basis, there is scientific and public concern about the risk offing near high power radio transmitters. Recent studies have suggested a possible relationship between leukaemia and residential proximity to radio-television transmitters. We conducted a small area study to investigate a cluster of leukaemia near a high power radio-transmitters in a peripheral area of Rome. Methods: The study area was defined as a 10 km radius circle around the transmitter, with a population of 30165 (Census 1991). The source of data was a regional Geographic Information System including mortality, population, and socio-economic data by census tract. An area of 3.5 km close to the transmitter and nine bands of increasing distance from the transmitter, using 0.5 km radius increment up to 10 km, were defined. Observed/expected number of cases, adjusted for 5-year age-group and socio-economic level were computed in the area 0-3.5 Km and in the nine bands. These data were used to test the decline in risk at different distances from the radio transmitter. A trend specific test (Stone's conditional test) was performed; the significance level was determined using Monte Carlo simulations. Results: The leukaemia mortality within 3.5 km (5,863 inhabitants) was higher than expected (SMR=2.5, 95% confidence interval 1.07-4.83); the excess was due to a significant higher mortality among men (7 cases observed, SMR=3.5). The results of the Stone's test after adjusting for socio-economic confounding, showed a significant decline in risk with distance from the transmitter only among men (p=0.005), whereas the p-value for both sexes was p=0.07. Discussion: The present ecological study has a small number of cases, and there is the possibility of confounding from socio-demographic, occupational, and environmental factors. However these findings are interesting since similar results have been reported in previous studies. Vatican Radio programmes are broadcast all over the world from a forest of antennae at Santa Maria di Galera, near Cesano, a northern suburb of Rome. Residents have reported the complex to magistrates dozens of times and doctors who examined the cause of 7,500 deaths over six years in Cesano found the incidence of tumours was 30 per cent higher than the national average. A separate inquiry by the Lazio region found that electromagnetic energy in the area was almost three times the legal limit. Francesco Ferrante, the director general of Italy's Legambiente, or environmental league, said people living near the antennae had found their computers switched on by themselves, telephone conversations were "invaded" by radio transmissions and watching television was impossible. The Legambiente claimed that 60 per cent of deaths in the area in 1996 were due to cancer. Lucia Venturi, a scientific specialist with the organisation, called on the Italian state to intervene to protect the health of its citizens. Yesterday it was reported that official paperwork sent by the investigating magistrates to three Vatican representatives had been returned on the grounds that the antennae complex enjoyed extra-territorial status, leaving them immune from judicial sanctions. Lawyers acting for the Vatican, including Eugenio Pacelli, a nephew of Pope Pius XII, pointed out that, under the Lateran Pact those who exercise Vatican activities are not punishable under Italian law. A 1951 accord also recognises the extra- territoriality of the complex. The lawyers added that there was no legal precedent recognising any damaging effect to health of electromagnetic waves. However, a local councillor insisted: "The privilege of extra- territoriality is not valid. The constitutional right to people's health has to be respected." Magistrates have now asked Italy's Foreign Ministry to intervene to prevent diplomatic deadlock over the case. .
