-Caveat Lector- FAST TRACK ACTION ALERT GET YOUR EMAIL AND PHONE ALERT SYSTEM IN ORDER PASS THIS ALERT ON TO OTHERS Hello everyone: If you are concerned about trade agreements: eliminating jobs in the U.S., wiping out small farmers world wide, the proliferation of sweatshops, the fate of human rights, the future of immigrant rights (and why people are forced to leave their countries to look for work), the destruction of the environment, etc., etc., please pay attention to FAST TRACK. This is the method by which the proponents of Free Trade i.e. corporate managed trade, avoid a public debate on the expansion of NAFTA to the Western Hemisphere under the FTAA. If Congress delegates their legislative authority to the President, his unelected corporate trade advisors and others who write the trade bills, in particular, the FTAA, then the people's voice as expressed through OUR DEMOCRATICALLY ELECTED REPRESENTATIVES is stilled. IF FAST TRACK passes there will be no open, vigorous, public debate and no public and political scrutiny of the FTAA and other trade agreements. This is a completely undemocratic. PLEASE READ BELOW. Tomorrow the Fast Track legislation will be introduced. The GOP leadership in the House is introducing language on Fast Track at a press conference tomorrow at 2:00 PM. The main sponsor of the bill is Rep. Crane (IL-R-8th), Chair of Ways & Means, and other Members who have signed a Dear Colleague that is being circulated include: Reps. Hastert, DeLay, Thomas, Armey, Watts, Dreier and Kolbe. While we don't know too much about the language, at this point. It is likely that it will not allow for future trade agreements to include efforts to improve labor and environmental standards. This would pretty much eliminate most of the Democratic free-traders who would have been eager to support some kind of alternative, and it is unclear whether the GOPs think that they have the votes to pass the bill as a partisan measure. We all need to be on stand-by-alert, and be ready to crank up the telephone calls to Congress and the House of Representatives, if it looks like they will try to schedule this bill for a quick vote.
