Self defense against those who commit violence is a social

Self defense against those who commit violence IS violence. Ergo, if
 the

false because "those who commit violence" is a subset of "anyone."

Re: [CTRL] THIS fan thinks I oughta be a rabbi

2001-01-29 Thread Nessie

-Caveat Lector-

Sorry, I hit the wrong button. I should have hit the Paste button first.
It was supposed to say:

But I think I sound much more like a Jesuit. At least that's what
people tell me. A rabbi can wear you down with his logic as well as
Jesuit, but when a Jesuit sees that it is going to take a long time, he
cuts to the chase. To a rabbi, the logic itself is a thing of beauty, a
gift from G-d, and worth the time it takes just for that reason alone. A
Jesuit, on the other hand, wants to convince you of the error of your
ways and move on to the next guy. They keep score differently. The rabbi
counts how many points he scored in the debate. The Jesuit counts how
many people he convinced. It's a whole different system. People mistake
one for the other because both are so methodical. But their goals
differ, and goals define behavior far more than does style.

I had an English prof once who was an ex Jesuit. He taught me a lot
about language. It's no more about structure and meaning than a house is
about bricks and mortar. If you can understand that, he said, and you’re
willing to study and practice, you might just learn how to talk. The
other thing to know is that it's not plagiarism if you steal from more
than three places. Everyone steals. They have to. Almost everything has
already been thought of and said. A new idea comes along once or twice
in a century. Most are never passed on. So make use of what you can
learn from others, he said, from me especially, because I'm really good
at it; I learned how from the best. Besides, he pointed out the first
day, we'd already paid him and money doesn't grow on trees.

My old prof had very good reasons for quitting the order (besides
wanting a family), upon which he expounded quite frequently. There are
some serious flaws in Jesuit logic, he taught us, but there is no point
whatsoever in trying to explain it to them in any language but their
own. This, as he impressed upon us frequently, is far, far easier said
than done. On the other hand, it's worth knowing how to do because once
you've climbed a couple of mountains, even the steepest hill fails to
intimidate you.

If you can't think, you can't talk. If you can't talk, you can't be
understood, even by yourself. I can talk a blue streak. I understand
myself perfectly. What I don't understand is why some people fail to
also understand me. I'm clear. I'm logical. I tell only the truth. Yet
some people hear me say one thing and other people hear me say something
different. What's the problem? Are they stupid, or am I doing something
wrong?

I don’t want to sound like a rabbi or a Jesuit. I’m trying to be as
plain spoken as possible, so as to reach the broadest audience. Maybe I
need to dumb it down more. What do y’all think? I'm open to suggestions.

Indeed, you do. Some people talk about being 'trained' by Jesuits
rather than being 'educated' by them - I don't mean that in a negative
way, but as you point out it is a very logical way of thinking.

No, I don't think you are doing anything wrong. I believe you have one
more step to go - and that is to become an artist. To me, an artist is
someone who excels in any field - they learn the 'trade' and the rules
of the game, and then take them to new heights and create art. I
believe a wood cabinet maker, an athlete, a chef, a mathematican -
anyone can take their profession or love into the realm of art.

You, nessie, like to work with words and ideas - that doesn't
necessarily make you a writer let alone an artist but you certainly seem
to be on that path.

I think you would be incapable of dumbing down what you write about, and
I do think you have found your own voice. Sometimes it is grating,
sometimes condescending, sometimes irritating - but when I have the
time, I read what you have to say and think about your point of view.
That might not be saying much to you, but there aren't a lot of people
on the internet whom impress me with their communications abilities.
Your personlity comes through loud and clear - and so do your ideas.
So, keep it up! I think I see a budding artist.
