Re: Debian and Orca installation Question
Hi All, Thank you. What can I do when the kernel in Debian stable (even with non-free firmware-supported net-install image) not support the integrated Wi-Fi card of my notebook? How can be easy to create net-install media with pached-kernel to support it? The Wi-Fi card name is: MediaTek MT7921 Best regards: Egon

I think Speakup starts when a person choose a "Speech support" install option. Best regards: Egon

Hi, 2022-10-29 20:07 GMT+02:00, Jordan Livesey : > just use the netinstall iso files, they give you a minimal mate desktop > with gimp and libreoffice but everything else you are free to use and > customise in turms of what else you want, plus, orca comes as standard, if > your pc requires non free firmware, go grab one of those images > It is a notebook PC without RJ45 port and I have fear that I unable to set Wi-Fi connection... So, to use the netinstall image is not possible in this situation I think. Best regards: Egon
Debian and Orca installation Question
Hi All, How can I install Debian without "auto start of Orca" problem? I installed Debian with "Speech support" option from the actual Debian standard first DVD many years ago. I installed the Mate desktop environment. Orca did not start automatically but the console-based speaking software did. How can I install the system to avoid these problems? Can I install the system from "debian-live-11.3.0-amd64-mate.iso" or better if I install it from "debian-11.5.0-amd64-DVD-1.iso" image? Best regards: Egon

Debian Live DVD Orca autostart
Hi, I downloaded the following Debian Live DVD image: debian-live-10.3.0-amd64-mate.iso I want to modify the image to enable all accessibility features. I want to start Orca at boot automatically. I can modify the image from an already installed system. I can extract filesystem.squashfs from the live DVD image. What do I modify to enable and start Orca? I do not want to install the Live DVD, I want to make "my own" live DVD with my own programs to use it any computer. I read the following on Debian Accessibility Wiki to enable Orca autostart: eval $(dbus-launch); export DBUS_SESSION_BUS_ADDRESS DBUS_SESSION_BUS_PID GSETTINGS_BACKEND=dconf gsettings set org.gnome.desktop.a11y.applications screen-reader-enabled true GSETTINGS_BACKEND=dconf gsettings set org.mate.interface accessibility true GSETTINGS_BACKEND=dconf gsettings set org.mate.applications-at-visual startup true It does not operate inside a chroot environment. Can I put somewhere this script to run it at boot? Simplest way to edit any config file to enable this feature but I unable to find a method to do it. I am total blind, I need only orca, I do not need contrast theme or other. Best regards: Egon
Text console speaking - espeakup problem
Hi All, I want to create my custom Debian live environment, but only with text console, i do not need graphical frontend. I can do all the things except configure espeakup to speak it and reads the console. I want to use it on a computer which has low memory and slow CPU, i need only text console. My Debian live environment works well but it is not speaking. I installed espeakup package. I unable to find the espeakup voices in /usr/lib/espeakup-data (no such directory). So i unable to set the voice in /etc/default/espeakup. I am using the "speakup.synth=soft" kernelparameter but nothing happens. I am using standard kernel package (which linux-image-amd64 dummy package installs). I do not need speak at boot time, only when the system is loaded and the prompt appears. What can I do? Egon
Debian on Raspberry Pi with Orca is it possible?
Hi All, Is it possible to use Debian on Raspberry with Orca speech support? Can anybody has an experience about how to use it on Raspberry? Are there any problem with speed etc? I know that Raspbian is optimised to use with Raspberry but it's accessibility is offtopic on this list... Best regards: Egon
Re: Indicator accessibility
Hi! Thank you very much for your reply. I try to go to the indicator applet by pressing Control-Alt-escape key combination. Then i try to go with left/right, up/down arrows. Orca only told me that "Show the desktop", nothing more. What are the keyboard shortcuts of the indicator applet? What am I doing wrong? I am trying with this Debian live iso image: debian-live-9.3.0-amd64-mate.iso Sincerely, Egon
Indicator accessibility
Hi! I installed Debian Mate with "Debian Installer with Speech Synthesis" feature. I unable to read the indicator applet, Orca did not say anything when I switch to the indicator panel. The situation is the same when i try to run Debian in live mode. What can I do? Best regards: Egon

Debian Official Live DVD and Orca problem
Hi All! I want to try the Debian Live system with Orca but Orca do not start when I press altGr-s combination when the system is loaded. I tried to press the left Alt-key too. I visited Debian Accessibility Wiki. I pressed altGr-s when the system boots up but Orca did not start. Pressing Alt-F2 and typed orca command, it starts, but it speaks only in that window and did not read any information. :-( I downloaded Debian Official Live DVD from here: https://cdimage.debian.org/debian-cd/current-live/amd64/iso-hybrid/ I tried Gnome and Mate environment, the situation is the same. :-( I asked help from my friend who has no visual problem, she unable to find Orca in the system menu to start it. What can I do? Best regards: Egon
Installing Debian - accessibility question
Hi All! I am a total blind user, i want to install Debian stable. Which graphical environment works best with Orca, Gnome or Mate? What is the best installation media for full accessibility? Do I download the Debian Official Live CD (with Gnome or Mate), or do I install the system from a standard debian DVD choosing the "speech enabled" option from the boot menu? Please, give me any advice. Best regards: Egon
Re: Orca autostart problem
Hi! How can I put Orca in my startup programs or preferred programs? Will it be fixed if i reinstall the system choosing a "Installer with speech synthesizer support"? I installed it without speech, somebody reads me the screen... Best regards: Egon
Re: Orca autostart problem
Hi! Yes, i tried. But it does not work. In the controlpanel, Orca starts automatically (checked) but it does not speak until I manual start it. :-( Egon
Orca autostart problem
Hi All, I have installed Debian most recent stable and I unable to set Orca to starts every time when the system boots up. I installed Debian Mate AMD64 from a Debian official Live CD project. I can start Orca manually. What can I do? I tried the following which i read from Debian Wiki Orca section: eval $(dbus-launch); export DBUS_SESSION_BUS_ADDRESS DBUS_SESSION_BUS_PID GSETTINGS_BACKEND=dconf gsettings set org.gnome.desktop.a11y.applications screen-reader-enabled true GSETTINGS_BACKEND=dconf gsettings set org.mate.interface accessibility true But it does not help.
