It looks to me that Japanese has a visible (weight) difference between
the kana glyphs and the kanji ones. Is this the best we can get?

 true.
Kenshi: is this known or is the application doing anything wrong with fonts?
What I can guarantee is that the application runs in a chroot containing the
 exact same
fonts as the g-i. Perhaps gtkrc is not properly used when running this
 application...

I'll try later your ISO image, but at least some thin glyph looks be taken
from zh.ttf instead of ja.ttf, even ja.ttf includes correct glyph.

Thanks,

Justification: renders package unusable

It seems that preseed always tries to retrieve a preseed file...even for not
preseeded installs.

I found this while running a standard install with the sid_d-i netinst of

[MEETINGS] Next D-I team meeting on Saturday March 4th 17:00 UTC - Prepare next release

2006-02-25 Thread Christian Perrier
The next Debian Installer team opened meeting is scheduled for
Saturday Mar 4th 17:00 UTC.

This meeting will be focused on post-beta2 release goals. The D-I
beta2 release is currently scheduled for the same day, so March 4th
will be a pretty much important date for D-I.

The Wiki page is opened for the meeting agenda.

http://wiki.debian.org/DebianInstaller/Meetings

I will add timings to the agenda at the last minute, as usual, so
probably on Saturday morning UTC. Expect a meeting duration of about
1h30 or maybe even 2h.

Bug#253404: Bug #253404: Set root's locale to POSIX on the installed system for complex (CJK, Indic, RTL...) languages

2006-02-25 Thread Christian Perrier
With tha attached patch, I propose another solution, probably not
perfect...but mostly aimed to trigger more discussion:

Create a new language category (category 3) for languages that can
use the text installer but cannot be displayed in a regulard Linux
 console.

The current category 3 (used for languages that require the graphical
 installer) then becomes category 4

Then, in localechooser's post-base-installer, the script populated
 /target/root/.profile with LANG=C, LANGUAGE=C and a comment to
explain why this is done this way.

I have tested localechooser with this patch:

With French, root environment in the installed system's console is
localized

With Japanese, it isn't, which is what was intended..

So, it worksnow we need to decide whether this is Good or if there
could be a better solution.

thanx. The application I took the screenshots with is not the g-i frontend

running in the very same environment; so far I can tell that as far as fonts are
concerned, it behaves the same way as the frontend.

Bug#339855: [g-i] Small patch to run a shell from the GTK frontend

2006-02-25 Thread Attilio Fiandrotti
As it seems that creating a GTK terminal widget usable with DFB is not
something is going to be done in short time ( and removing Execute a
shell form main-menu is not the optimal solution, as proposed in the
plan for tomorrow's d-i meeting ) i propose this patch to
d-i-utils-shell.postinst from debian-installer-utils package

Index: debian/di-utils-shell.postinst
===
--- debian/di-utils-shell.postinst (revisione 35117)

+else
+db_go || exit
+debconf-disconnect /bin/sh || true

when the user presses Execute a shell, the chvt 2 command is run and
the console is switched to VT2.
As the original chvt tool from console-tools depends from a couple of
libraries, i've rewritten it (source code attached below) taking source
code from the original console-tools package.
I've tested this solution and it works well; we should also provide a
way for the user to get back to the VT where the g-i runs, as actually
he's told to press run exit to get back to the instalation even if the
GTK frontend i used.
If the patch is accepted, someone should also choose where to place the
chvt.c sourcecode.

02/21 Etch install -- DHCP fails for Realtek 8139

2006-02-25 Thread David B van Balen
I'm attempting a Debian install on a Compaq desktop that I purchased late last
year. I've managed to coax it through almost all the process (including a
3-day-long partitioning/formatting process for my 250GB HDD), but I'm stuck at
the Install the base system step because I can't get networking up.

The installer appears to recognize my card (Realtek Semiconductor Co., Ltd
RTL-8139/813/8139C+ (rev 10)) properly and load the correct modules (8139cp,
8139too, mii, eth1394, ieee1394) during the Detect Network Hardware step, but
fails in the Configure the network step.

If I then run ifconfig in a separate VT, I can see lo, but not eth0. Running
'ifconfig eth0 up' succeeds and I can see eth0, but running dhclient merely
results in multiple messages like DHCPDISCOVER on eth0 to 255.255.255.255 port
67 interval 6, followed by No DHCPOFFERS received and No working leases in
persistent database.

I can't really think of anything else to try at this point, but don't really
want to give up after finally finding an installer that supports my SATA driver
and waiting 3 days for the drive to get formatted. Does anyone have any ideas
as to how I can get the install process over this bump?

TIA

After selecting the language: Bengali - ? while using
graphical D-I [1], the next screen shows a list of country names [2].

May I know why India is listed above Bangladesh for Bengali language?

Political conspiracy or.alphabetical order? :-)

Sorting the country names in the short lists is done while building
localechooser (actually, this is what makes building localechooser so
long).

It is done by the following code:

  LOCPATH=`pwd` LC_ALL=debian/locales/$lastlocale.UTF-8 sort -k 2.1
$outfile $outfile.tmp mv $outfile.tmp $outfile

In short, country names are sorted according to the given language's
locale.

So, what actually sorts India before Bengladesh is the bn_BD locale
collation rules:

From /usr/share/i18n/locales/bn_BD
title Bengali/Bangla language locale for Bangladesh
source Ankur Group, http://www.ankurbangla.org, http://www.bengalinux.org;
addressDhaka, Bangladesh
contactTaneem Ahmed, Jamil Ahmed
.../...
LC_COLLATE
% TODO: Bengali sorting should be added
copy iso14651_t1
END LC_COLLATE

Good luck for fixing this...if this needs fixing.

 Hi,

with my presario 2115EU laptop : Nothing respond on the

this kind of problem and found a solution ?
 Thank you very much,

Have you tried the images available from
http://www.debian.org/debian/debian-installer

These are the development images of D-I. Using them to install the
stable version of Debian is IIRC possible if you boot with linux26
mirror/suite=stable...but recent reports have shown us that this is
not guaranteed to work.

Another option is trying to boot the installer with:

linux debian-installer/probe/usb=false

This could solve the hang you described as it can be due to USB
probing for a USB keyboard.

Dunno.

Actually, either the alphabetical order is correct according to
Bengali collation rules and you and other Bengali speakers are the
only ones who can tellor it is wrong and the collation order
should be fixed.

In short, what is the normal alphabetical order between Bengladesh
and India when written in Bengali?

If the locale needs fixing, LC_COLLATE is what should be fixed. This
is one of the most complicated sections, imho, in locale files. The
help of a locales specialist would be needed if a fix is needed.

Even I don't know why ``India'' is listed above ``Bangladesh'' but since
BD is the default, does it _really_ matter much?

Yes, it *does* matter. :)

There are only two country names after all ...

As I saw in other languages [ie. English, French, German etc] the
country names are sorted alphabetically - except Bengali.

Christian already informed that the bn_BD locale has an issue, I will
try to dig out.

Best,

You can ask for help on debian-i18n, at least to be pointed at correct
documentation about collation rules writing.

Denis barbier gave a very interesting talk at last Debconf about this
(which talk, dammit, I couldn't attend because I had a D-I talk
immediately after it).

All Debconf videos are available from
http://meetings-archive.debian.net/pub/debian-meetings/2005/debconf5/

Denis talk is

In bn_BD [1] locale it says,

LC_COLLATE

copy iso14651_t1

In bn_IN [2] locale it says,
---
LC_COLLATE
% Copy the template from ISO/IEC 14651

END LC_COLLATE

I don't see any difference in the LC_COLLATE block, except the % comment
line. :-?
