os-prober does not run code from os's its probing, which this line
attempts to do. If you'd like to provide a way to grep out the
kdemar_type setting from this file that does not involve executing
arbitrary code, I'll add that; for now I've done this:

long=$(printf K-DEMar GNU/Linux (%s)\n $(cat
$dir/etc/kdemar-release))

Tourexpi.com' dan büyük tanıtım atağı

2007-07-23 Thread [EMAIL PROTECTED]

23. Temmuz 2007

Tourexpi.com‘dan büyük Türkiye tanıtım atağı

Özellikle Avrupa’daki profesyonel turizm camiasının yıllardır yoğun ilgiyle
izlediği Türkiye turizm portalı www.tourexpi.com, AVRUPA TÜRKİYE TURİZM KONSEYİ
başkanı Hüseyin Baraner’in öncülüğünde, hem Avrupalıların yoğun talebine cevap

Bug#418867: Can't resize partition in text installer, but installgui can

2007-04-12 Thread [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Package: debian-installer
Version: 4.0

In Debian 4.0 AMD64 (DVD install downloaded 12 April 2007) on a
Core2Duo laptop (Toshiba U200) with a full-size Windows XP partition
(80GB on 80GB disk), I was not able to resize the partition using the
text-based Debian installer, but the graphical installer worked like a
charm.

The behaviour of the text installer was tested in two reboots.

The installation was the default (2.6 kernel) with options: English,
British English keyboard, Greece location, no network config, manual
partitioning.

And from which website / ftp site did you do the download?

I downloaded it from

http://cdimage.debian.org/cdimage/etch_di_rc2/i386/iso-cd/

and

http://cdimage.debian.org/cdimage/daily-builds/daily/arch-latest/i386/iso-cd/

(daily-builds)

Mmm, that is known as a reliable source.

The message
Install base system : Debootstrap Warning : [...]/packages.gz was
corrupt

should have been reported by more people if it really is damaged.

I assume it is due an error during download (or burning of the CD)

Can you verify it?

Cheers
Geert Stappers

Can you verify it?

No problem!

MD5 checksums of the ISO files are OK. CD integrity verification during
the installation succeded. strange :)

Bug#380058: (no subject)

2007-02-15 Thread [EMAIL PROTECTED]
Hi,

With 14/02/07 Netinstall Debian testing debian-testing-amd64-netinst iso initrd
is now generated without any errors.

and i've found the sda/sdb reverse problem :

Dell PowerEdge 1950 server  has  a virtual floppy detected and attached as scsi
removable disk to /dev/sda.

So Megaraid sata is attached as /dev/sdb. Once install finished and first
reboot executed boot hang because initrd want to mount sda letter.

To fix it :

- after keyboard selection switch into vt2 with ctrl-alt-f2
- type : modprobe -r usb_storage ; modprobe -r megaraid_sas ; modprobe -v
megaraid_sas ; modprobe -v usb_storage.

after that hard disk is mapped to sda and virtual floppy to sdb and there are
no more problem with installer.

or maybe (not tested) just disable usb_storage module at installer boot grub
prompt.

regards,

Cédric Lagneau

Bug#406539: problems with scsi

2007-01-12 Thread [EMAIL PROTECTED]
I've also tried with an other version, debian 3.1 r2 downloaded from via ftp.
The hw-detect stops when detecting cd-rom drives, the last message is: loading
sd_mod for scsi disk support or something similar. The ide check is OK
I tried to disconnect the other cd-rom drives and the hard-drive I didn't need,
but the problem still remains!!!

Comments/Problems:

My plan was to install the root-fs on a Radi6 device.. but as this
option was not available, I had to go for a Raid5 device.

The partitioning the drive mappings was strange.

When I finally reached the Boot-loader installation the Grub
installation failed.
I tried to install it manually. But as I have disks 6 discs connected
to boot the nv_sata (4disks) and the sata_sil (2 disks) and the order
of those contollers are not the same under Bios and linux.. it's a big
issue.
I just can't get it to install. Right now I'm running under chroot
/target.. :-(

I wonder if these problems (and others that have been reported) are
not
just the same problems we've seen before: top and/or bottom of
characters
or accents missing because of library problems. If that's it, the
problems should mostly disappear when we switch to the newer
libraries.

indeed, gtkdfb 2.0.9 often cuts pixels located on the borders of
labels, textareas etc., so you'd better wait having newer libraries
before wasting time on problems that are only apparently related to
fonts.

nslu2-kernel

2006-06-02 Thread [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Hey!

I have a NSLU2 and installed Debian on it through the normal
Debianinstaller.
Now I wanted to install the loop-aes-2.6.15-1-nslu2 but i can't load the
aes-loop-module because of the nslu2-kernel seems to have the normal
loop-module compiled in.

# cat /boot/config-2.6.15-1-nslu2 | grep CONFIG_BLK_DEV_LOOP
CONFIG_BLK_DEV_LOOP=y
So it isn't able to use the patched loop-module with the default
nslu2-debiankernel.

I think that's an designerror.

Thanks a lot,

Mirko

any chance you could try 25.1 ? or a cvs build just to see.
I believe the problems were down in the directfb layer so it would
be
nice to know if its there or higher up in gdk/cairo. What we really
need is a commited developer with a PowerPC to trace this down thats
 the main problem.

I've updated the GTKDFB howto [1] to build latest GTKDFB libraries:
could someone with a PPC box try to download and compile DFB 0.9.25.1
and then follow the steps explained in the wiki tutorial to build
GTKDFB PPC libraries ?

thanks

 Hi

Reading reports about the PPC version of the g-i, it came to my
mind
an old, yet unsolved, bug [1] that caused crashes on PPC boxes
with
 some particular grapic cards installed.
No one ever investigated deeply enough to state if that was related
to
DFB 0.9.22 or to the DFB backend contained in GTKDFB 2.0.9 as,
AFAIK,
no one ever tried to run a recent DFB backend togheter with DFB
 =0.9.24 on a PPC box.
As some PPC users may experience annoying crashes, i suggest to
disable DFB's hardware acceleration by default, at least until we
switch to a newer stack of GTKDFB+Cairo+DFB libraries.

IIRC it was the Matrox driver or the ATI Rage128, which has been
 reworked since 0.9.24.

Ok, one more reason to update g-i libraries.
Dennis, would you suggest to switch directly from 0.9.22 to 0.9.25.1,
skipping 0.9.24 ? would that give better stability to the g-i ?

Bug#368300: g-i not showing accents above capital letters

2006-05-21 Thread [EMAIL PROTECTED]
We used to assign bugs somehow related to the raphical installer to
cdebconf-gtk-udeb, so i guess you can proceed with reassignment of this
bug too, which i suspect is related to the old GTKDFB 2.0.9 libraries
were currently using.

Does the 2006-03-26 integrate all the necessary changes for DFB?
More
interestingly, would it be possible to extract the necessary patches

DFB and to apply them to 2.8? If they are not invasive, that's
probably
 a better way to go.

That would be possible, but some patching of Makefile is required, as
shown in this patchfile [0] for GTK 2.8.10 from DFB's CVS repository,
where the GDKDFB project lived for many years before entering GTK
mainline.
Also, some bugfixes applied to the DFB backend after it was merged
into GTK mainline should be backported.

I just filed reports (and a patch) for two bugs [1][2] that currently
prevent GTK 2.9.1 from compiling with the DFB backend.
If GTK team fixes those bugs before GTK 2.9.2 is released, we could
build the GTKDFB libraries without the need for patches to original
source tarballs.
Note that GTK 2.9.1 requires pango 1.13 (not udeb-packaged yet), while
GTK 2.9.0 requires only pango 1.12 (available as udeb): if at GTK 2.9.2
release time pango 1.13 should not have udeb-packaged yet, backporting
patches for bugs 342091 and 342093 to GTK 2.9.0 could be an option too.

Re: gtk 2.0.x or 2.9+ for etch g-i ? (Was: graphics or text as default)

2006-05-16 Thread [EMAIL PROTECTED]
Hi

If i'm not wrong, current GTKDFB 2.0.9 libraries (binary .udeb and -
dev .deb) are built from a completly different source package than
regular GTKX libraries (currently 2.8.xx in unstable, IIRC).
Standard GTK libraries used in the Debian are built with the X
frontend, while GTK libraries used in the g-i have to be built with the
DFB backend (now in GTK 2.9.0 and later ).
When i asked on debian-boot to upgrade to more recent GTKDFB libraries
for the g-i, i was thinking about replacing ONLY already existing
custom source packages and binary (u)debs for GTKDFB, as touching
standard GTKX 2.8.x libaries managed by the gnome-team is out of
question for me too.
Assuming that we keep the scheme of different source packages (and
we'll have to, at least until GTK 2.10 is released) for GTKX and
GTKDFB, is it possible delegating to the d-i team the management over
the GTKDFB package (currently, the DFB backend to GTK is used only by
the g-i and was also lately developed to be specifically used in the g-
i) ?.
Of course, if there is no way to update GTKDFB packages without
updating GTKX ones too, the localeudebs solution proposed by Frans is
the only way to proceed.

The main reason why i think we should switch to GTK 2.9.0 (or later
CVS snapshot ) in the g-i is that the DFB backend contained in GTK 2.9.
x is much more stable than the one found in GTKDFB 2.0.9 (which was
basically a standard GTK 2.0.9 set of libraries patched with the DFB
backend taken from from directfb.org CVS repository).

GTK 2.9.x introduces a lot of new advanced features, and more recently-
written parts of code may still be buggy: luckily, the debian-
installer's GTK frontend [1] is a very simple application that makes
exclusive use of GTK features that were introduced previously GTK 2.6
was released.

Past experiments done with hand-made GTK udebs [2] from CVS 2006-03-26
demonstrated it's stable enough for g-i purposes, while also giving a
more stable background for fonts-testing.

Trying to install etch-amd64 using official jigdo weekly build 20060417.
I only have a dial-up connection (did jigdo and burn at another place with high
speed) so am attempting an install from CD only. base-installer fails because
of the following:

On 4/16/06 Franz Pop wrote
The cause of this issue has been found. A necessary file was missing from CD
images due to a change in a package.
CD images built after today should be OK again.

I understand the file /cdrom/.disk/base-installable is missing from the iso and
base-installer checks for its existence and I presume sets a boolean variable
(name, location?) that enables/disables install from cdrom to proceed.

On 4/24/06 Marco wrote
Is there any VT2 hack I could do to let the base install process go on?

I also would like to know of any hack (preseed or ash shell commands) that
would let base-installer proceed with the install. This would be simpler for
my dialup situation than new downloads.

Bug#266691: kbd-chooser fails in sarge installer for powerpc

2006-04-21 Thread [EMAIL PROTECTED]
Hello everyone,

Yesterday I tryed the Etch installer of 14 March 2006.
I chose the Italian language and the Italian keyboard, but the
keyboard
was configured as an azerty keyboard and not as a qwerty.

So I am asking for the inclusion of the new ibook-it keymap[1]
The package kbd-chooser should
either understand (!) that it is running on ibook/powerbook
and should show this keymap instead of the usb one,
or it should _ask_ which keyboard shall use (easyer way, I think ;).

[1]... I will provide my keymap asap :-)

Cheers,
Giovanni

P.S.
Please let me know (privately) if I should *not* BCC you... since you
do read the lists ;-)

[g-i] about GTK 2.0.9 - 2.10 migration

2006-04-06 Thread [EMAIL PROTECTED]
Hi

As i promised some times ago, i'm trying to summarize changes that
recently occourred to some of the libraries the g-i depends upon and
that caused breakages in the building process of some udebs.
So far, we've been using libgtk+-directfb-2.0.9 togheter with DFB
0.9.22 and everything was fine; recently DFB 0.9.24 made its way into
experimental and frans reported problems in building the libgtk+-
directfb-2.0 udeb against DFB 0.9.24.
This was indeed expected as in DFB relase 0.9.23 some functions
changed their names while the old DFB backend included in the gtk+-
directfb-2.0.9 set of -dev libraries was not patched accordingly and
hence still refers to those removed symbols.
What can we do about this? the best thing to do, IMHO, is staying with
GTK 2.0.9 and DFB 0.9.22 until we're ready for a complete switch to a
brand new set of libraries (all or nothing approach :).
The libraries that need to go togheter are all the below listed:

*NOT YET RELEASED
-GTK+ 2.10.0 (release date for someday around May, currently in CVS)
-DFB = 0.9.24 (0.9.25 is in CVS and should be released this/next
week)
-Cairo 1.2.0 ( no release date planned yet, currently in CVS )
*ALREADY RELEASED
-Glib = 2.10.1 , ATK, Pango, etc..

As you can see, some of the libraries we need are still in CVS: this
night, on a IRC chat, Frans, Davide, Eddy and other talked about the
opportunity of creating temporary udebs and development debs from CVS.
While this is possible as all the libraries currently in CVS are in
good shape and usually compile without problems, i cannot tell if the
efforts are really worth it.
Note that the GTK frontend sourcecode is not tied to any specific GTK
2.x version and the graphical frontend itself (the gtk.so object
provided by current cdebconf-gtk-udeb and built against current -dev
debs ) depends from libgtk+-directfb-2.0.so.0 (any version) only and
not from libdirectfb-0.9.so.xx.0.0.
This means it shuld be possible buildng the cdebconf-gtk-udeb against
old -dev (DFB 0.9.22 and GTKDFB 2.0.9) debs and run it against udebs
from CVS.
I'm not sure 100% about this but, if someone is brave enough to create
experimental udebs, i can provide him all the i386 precompiled binaries
he needs.

Hi

DFBCardCapabilities and GetCardCapabilities have been removed in DFB v
0.9.23 [1] and recent versions of the DFB GDK backend no longer
reference those symbols.
Old GTKDFB versions (like 2.0.9) still reference those symbols, so you
have to choose one of the following combinations:

-DFB 0.9.22 and GTKDFB 2.0.9

or

-DFB =0.9.24 and GTKDFB = 2.8

I know i promised i would post a report about current GTKDFB
components status before today's meeting, but, as i'm pretty busy at
job, i'm sorry i won't be able to do this.
I hope i'll find some time to post the report this evening (DFB 0.9.25
is going to be released this week).

I definitely like this theme and i suggest to use it as default

Note that the dark-gray question description/extended description are
due to the fact that Bruno was using an old GTKDFB 2.8.10 ISO build

recent ISO images.
About the icons: we only need 4 or 5 icons, IIRC, and maybe a camera
icon for the screenshot button would be useful.

Now, I'd like to work on visual-impaired theme.
Attilio suggested me to work on HighContrastLargePrintInverse theme,
 available in gnome-themes.

I remember HighContrastLargePrintInverse adoption for visua impaired
people being suggested by Denis Barbier, but i cannot speak about this
as i know just very little abot accessibility.

Now, a question: how are we going to package GTK theme(s): into a
separate udeb or into rootskel-gtk?

[g-i] Patch to add PROGRESSCANCEL sopport to GTK frontend

2006-03-03 Thread [EMAIL PROTECTED]
Hi

Some times ago Colin Watson added supoprt for the the PROGRESSCANCEL
capability to the NEWT frontend and this patch does the same to the GTK
one by introducing threads.
I tested it and it seems to work with every versions of GTKDFB i have
(2.0.9, 2.8.10, 2.9): before commiting i would like it to be reviewed
by someone expert in cdebconf.
I also would like to know if the way the DC_GOBACK value is returned
is correct: it gets asynchronously stored into obj-data-button_val
and returned as soon as a progress_*() function is called.
Note that this patch will also close #322381, as GTK events are now
handled by a separate thread.

thanks

768', then in /etc/kde3/kdm/Xservers to add '-dpi 100' in :0 [EMAIL PROTECTED]
/usr/X11R6/bin/X -dpi 100 -nolisten tcp vt7)
The sound was of very bad quality; it took me hours of googling to find out
that I had too much distortion because PCM volume was set to high (by me
probably). Sound is still worse than in windows, but the sound card is
different (AC97 now, Yamaha XG ymf744b in windows).
Why is apt-listbugs not installed by default? A couple of years ago I installed
Woody and after 1 month of daily (I later learned monthly ones are wiser)
upgrades (not from stable), my system was crashing in the middle of the boot
sequence, and I never could solve this fatal problem. I went back to windows
for 2 years.
You may write the name of a command to list the partition table (fdisk -l) in
install-report.template/Root Size/partition table:. I lost a couple of minutes
googgling for it. I shall never forgive you.
Go bubulle! Champagne pour tout le monde! Bonne fêtes à tous! ; )
Arigato! Grazie mille! Danke Schoen!

Bug#252000: problem unchanged w/newest d-i

2004-11-10 Thread [EMAIL PROTECTED]
Just responding to the request for further info... I did try the latest
release of sarge netinst in October, 2004 on an IBM NetVista exactly
like the one described in the original bug report. I got exactly the
same results: The PC boots off the CD, but when the install process
gets to the point of trying to recognize and read the CD, it complains
and fails. Read the original report; the behavior is unchanged.

BTW, a Woody install disc works fine. (which is what I'm going to do...
dist-upgrade after a Woody install)

I did find the original config sheet from the vendor we purchased this
unit from. It lists:

IBM NetVista A40 P3-800 20GB 128MB
with Part#MID-150889 IBM 48X CD 10K3782

Thanks, -Gary

Bug#276100: kernel update changes menu.lst boot location

2004-10-13 Thread [EMAIL PROTECTED]
time for some more troubleshooting.. there is both
kernel and grub updates available. kernel update is
same version though?

updated kernel (only) first...

Linux theta 2.6.8-1-386 #1 Mon Sep 13 23:29:55 EDT
2004 i686 GNU/Linux (this is after the 'upgrade')

upgrading the kernel overwrote the edits to
/boot/grub/menu.lst i had to make in order to boot the
system during install (first boot after base install,
before base-config). changing my references to hd(0,5)
back to hd(1,5), which leaves the system unbootable
(except for windows, which was not changed).

kernel upgrade did not modify the physical location
(partition or drive) of /boot, so why did it edit the
'root' lines in menu.lst?

fixed menu.lst and rebooted. then did the grub upgrade
(-8 to -9). all was well. menu.lst entries were not
changed by it.

i have a few other configurations and scenarios to try
when i have more time. will provide info on them then.

Bug#276100: grub installs to wrong drive or is configured incorrectly

I'm guessing that the free space started _after_ the
 end of the extended
partition. If the free space had been enclosed
 within the existing extended
partition it should have created the new partitions
 as logical.

yes, i believe it was completely unallocated space at
the end of the drive. so i understand d-i's
partitioning methods with your explaination.

i have had problems in the past (my pre-debian days)
with really unconventional partioning (like a primary
after the extended); which is why i shy away from
setups like that. i'll just keep manually partitioning
for that little extra piece of mind. :)

  (2) first attempt: allowed d-i to install grub on
 mbr
of 'first drive' as it did properly detect the
existing windows install (1 of them, identified as
2000/xp probably because of the xp bootloader).
however, it must have considered the ide drive as
 the
'first drive' as that's where it put grub.

second attempt: knowing the above, manually chose
/dev/sda to install grub to mbr of the sata drive.
 it
installed there as expected, however since d-i saw
 the
ide as the 'first drive' and sata as the second it
configured grub to boot to hd1,0 for windows and
 hd1,5
  for linux.

  (3) which caused grub to not boot anything. had to
manually edit grub paramaters to read hd(0,5) to
 boot
linux. once to console, had to edit
/boot/grub/menu.lst to read hd(0,0) for windows
 and
  hd(0,5) for linux entries.

It looks like the boot sequence definition in your
 BIOS is different from the
sequence in which the disks are detected by d-i.

the boot sequence is configured: 1)floppy, 2)cdrom,
3)scsi/sata. then there's a separate configuration for
choosing to boot to a pci scsi card or on-board sata
(which is set for sata, obviously).

I'll reassign this report to grub-installer, but I'm
not sure if we will be
able to do autodetect this. Maybe we should just add
 a question which is the
primairy boot device if different types of disk
 controller are detected.

in this instance, shouldnt the actual location of the
windows installations, existing mbr and xp bootloader,
be enough to determine what the boot drive is?

i think someone will need to look at whether it's
because my sata is jbod and not a raid array. i do not
have a second sata drive to test this with a sata raid
configuration. i can, however, move the ide drive to
secondary ide controller to see if that makes a
difference. i'll do that in a few days, in case
someone needs additional information from this install
as it sits now.

i had zero'd the ide drive before partitioning it
since the first attempt had put grub on it's mbr.
there's no way that it should have been identified as
the boot drive.

will i run into problems with grub getting
misconfigured again if grub or the kernel gets
updated? or will those upgrade scripts leave my edits
to /boot/grub/menu.lst alone? i thought i saw a
kernel upgrade already. will try that before i
rearrange the drives to have another go.

  (4) during base-config's tasksel, i chose only
 manual
package selection and got a slew of pre-selected
packages (over 80, totalling 150+mb installed).

This is because these packages are priority
 'standard', the definition of
which is that they will be installed by default.

is that something new? i haven't experienced that
before. can it be avoided or are other packages now
going to depend on standard packages being
installed?

thanks for the quick input, frans.

Suggestion - swap + root encryption

2004-07-08 Thread [EMAIL PROTECTED]
Hello,
I want to suggest a feature which would make Debian the world's top
distribution in that field.

I'm talking about swap + root encryption. Especially root encryption is
not so easy to set up, so a lot of people don't use it and often even
ask questions like but why would someone want to encrypt the whole hard
disk? ;-).

3 short answers:
- Plausible deniability (you could say that there is only random data on
your hard disk or on the partition where your crpyted Debian
installation is, regardless of what's on the other partitions)
- Higher security by not booting from writable media (only USB or CD +
secret command + password to access crypted data)
- The more people use strong crypto, the more crypto becomes something
normal instead of a bad guys tool.

SuSE's installer currently only supports an encrypted /home partition,
which is already a step ahead of Debian. If some one knows about other
distros which support encryption at the installation, please tell me.

There even is a free version of an encryption software for Windows which
encrypts the whole hard disk (www.ce-infosys.de).

What do you think about it for the Debian installer?
Regards,
Neodaxus

Help! Debian-Installer Dies with various umount errors

2004-06-10 Thread [EMAIL PROTECTED]
I have tried the Beta 4 Sarge installer, Beta 4 Net Installer, and
Testing Candidate 1 Net Install (all for i386) and my installs always
die at Installing the Base System. (I always do a clean install, letting
the installer use the entire disk).

Looking in the error logs, I see:
umount: /target/dev/pts: No such file or directory
umount: /target/dev/shm: No such file or directory
umount: /target/proc/bus/usb: Invalid argument
I also have Googled and searched the BTS, and I note that there are
quite a few reports on multiple architectures that list this same
issue BUT I can't find any resolution or work-around.

Can anyone point me in the right direction here? Why is this bug coming up?
I feel like I'm really in a weird twilight zone where everyone else
seems to be doing fine with the new Debian Installer, but I keep running
into this same problem

Re: Help! Debian-Installer Dies with various umount errors

2004-06-10 Thread [EMAIL PROTECTED]
If you were blonde, female, and weighed less than 400 lbs I'd kiss you :)
Yes, you're 100% right... that's exactly the problem. If you're
installing to a hard disk of 100gig or greater, the Beta 4 installer and
the Testing Candidate 1 installer will fail, giving you no real error
messages, etc.

I was able to verify this, and with a little disk-juggling, got this
working.

I didn't see this in the BTS have you filed a bug report on it? I'd
say this was a pretty major problem that while easy to fix, really needs
to be corrected in TC1.

Once again, Dan, thanks so much for your help!

How large is your disk? I was running into similar issues, and it turns
out base-installer at some point runs `df /target/` to determine the
target disk. If your disk is large enough, the 1k-blocks column runs
into the Filesystem column, adding all manner of digits to the end of
the filesystem address.
My email on the issue is under the subject Installer fails on

Can't Install Kernel on Beta 4 Installer with Sarge

2004-06-01 Thread [EMAIL PROTECTED]
I'm having a bizarre problem with a Sarge Beta 4 Installer cd set trying
to install to a P4/1Gig Ram/120gigHD/IDE/E1000 Tyan motherboard. (This
is the 05-23-04 set)

I can get all the way through to choosing a kernel to install (so
partitioning and installing the base system works fine) -- but
regardless of what I choose (2.6.5, 2.6.3, or 2.4.2X) the installer
exits with error-code 1.

I looked in /target/boot, and it was empty, so nothing is being copied
over to it. Basically it appears that the kernel can't be installed for
some reason.

I'm totally at a loss to explain what's wrong the hardware is pretty
generic, and I chose the standard partitioning that was offered by the
installer -- no dual boots or anything weird -- and had the installer
partition and erase/format the hard disks -- so a totally clean install.

One clue might be this (or I might be totally wrong -- feel free to
correct me here): I thought that the installer should create THREE
partitions -- a /boot, a /, and swap wouldn't the bootloader (Grub)
and the kernel go in the /boot partition? The partitioner creates two
partitions, though, a / and a swap that's it.

Also, at one point this hard disk had a RH9 install on it, with
presumably Grub already installed (it was shipped that way to us)...
I've always chosen to rewrite/overwrite the partition tables, though, so
I'm assuming what was there is now gone.

Anyone have any ideas? I don't have copies of the various log files
because I have no way to copy them off of the machine (no floppies,
etc.) Although if anyone can give me clues or pointers in the right
direction, I can take a look through them and see what I can find.

I'm completely befuddled

Bug#249993: package: installation-reports: wish to have multiple mirror-choosing in normal installatin too

2004-05-20 Thread [EMAIL PROTECTED]
Package: installation-reports
hello,
i beg your pardon, that i don't use the detailed mask on your site for
this mail, but i think it's a general issue (i hope so).

i tried first to install (using the 50mb-cd and then a netinstall) as
expert, but i did something wrong (i am not really an expert...) and
after the installation-process my x didn't start.
so i tried the normal install yesterday.

the only thing i missed was a multiple choice of mirrors. as i could see
in my expert-experience, this helped to get a wonderful smooth download.
yesterday i got a stop, because some file was missing (or similar), so i
had to start that process again.

to have more mirrors would be wonderful for normal users too, because
it makes debian more reliable (just a feeling in a critical process) and
comfortable during installation.

greetings
hans horwath

Bug#243448: 243448 - updated info

2004-04-13 Thread [EMAIL PROTECTED]
workaround to get network functional again. from
memory, hopefully accurate :)

modprobe 8139too

/etc/init.d/networking restart

nano -w /etc/modules
(add line that reads...)
8139too

base-config

base-config terminated with an exim4 not running, so i
rebooted and ran it again just to make sure nothing
was missed. that time it exited with something like
exim4 configuration reloaded. so i figure that was ok.

network functioning, even after reboot. added contrib
and non-free to sources, 'apt-get update' works, as
did update of base-system packages (2 total) during
base-config.

a couple of reboots and small package installs (things
like elinks) and things still ok.

however, this does not answer the question as to what
package in the recent updates to the base-system is
causing the problem.

i am starting a new install using beta3 to see if it
still occurs with it too. in previous install runs
with beta3 (on or after last sunday/easter), network
isnt lost until after first reboot after base-config
(and base-system packages are update) finishes. that
is why i think it's caused by a recent update to a
package in the base-system.

will post another follow up with beta3 progress in a
bit.

thanks to liz for the help via email.. :)

Bug#243448: 243448: probable culprit found

2004-04-13 Thread [EMAIL PROTECTED]
since i was able to work-around the problem with the
netinst daily build used, i went back to beta3 d-i and
installed from scratch on the same system, following
the walkthrough i logged earlier, except i skipped
over the automatic updating of base-system that occurs
after base-config reboot.

i used aptitude to upgrade a single package at a time
in the base-system, in this order, and it didnt take
long to find the source of the problem (what causes
the 8139too module not to load automatically). i
tested the network using 'ping www.google.com',
rebooted and tested network again after each package
was upgraded..

sysvinit .. ok

sysv-rc .. ok

initscripts .. ok

discover-data .. network lost
it's version 2.2004.02.24-5 and replaced
1.2004.02-08-1

i double-checked by repeating the installation process
from the beginning with beta3, including skipping
base-system updates, and then upgraded only
discover-data. same results. network lost on reboot.

Re: d-i beta3 | DHCP

2004-03-30 Thread [EMAIL PROTECTED]

To Sven:

 Yeah, go to :

   http://www.debian.org/devel/debian-installer/

and download the 100MB CD including Debian base, which should contain
the ppoe .deb. It is available on i386, ia64 and alpha only for now
 though.

It took me two days to download that CD: knoppix downloads about 96M and then
stops. There is a trick to let it download all the 109M, but it was hard to find
for me.

The 100M disk does *not* work, really.

Something called Aptitude freezes the machine
Something called Taskel and Dselect ask for Debian GNU/Linux testing _Sarge_
-official Netinst Snapshot i386 Binary1 (20040315) disc insistently; all I
could do was to unplug the machine.

No way to install that PPPoE thing.

Also, which is the worst, no way to have a computer running, normally (something
like knoppix): how do other (normal) people do with debian?

Thank you Sven, anyway.

 To Michel van der Klei

I tried the new sarge install because I was told that the old woody one was
difficult to run.
As I undertand now, also the new one is unusable for an average user.

All I have now is a knoppix disc and an internet connection.

The directory /usr/local/bin contains a little script called
knxhdinstall, this script can be used to install Knoppix on your hdd.
Maybe you should try this first and learn some more about Debian
(Knoppix == Debian based) and how things work.

Thank you.
Probably I will be content with knoppix.

Luigi

Re: d-i beta3 | DHCP

2004-03-28 Thread [EMAIL PROTECTED]

   Luigi:
   I tried sarge d-i beta3 today.
At one point it says that it is looking for DHCP something, it says that
sometimes DHCP is slow, and then it comes out that it cannot find it. The
alternative is to give my IP number, but I do not know any IP number and,
as far as I know, my IP number changes quite often.

  Nathanael:
DHCP is the method used to find your IP number if it changes often. If it's
not working, and you have an always-on Internet connection, you have a
problem. (If you don't have an always-on Internet connection, don't bother
trying the current installer CDs; they seem to depend on an active Internet
connection, hence the name netinst. There should be ones which don't
  before the release of sarge.)

 Sven:
Still woody boot floppies pre-filled the IP number with 192.168.1.1 or
something such, which d-i doesn't anymore.

I tried, Sven, and inserted 192.168.1.1 but nothing worked.
Also, Nathanael, I use an ADSL connection:
usually I just enter a username and a password, and the system works.
It is the very thing I am doing right now, from a knoppix-cd.
All I know is that something called pppoe has to be set.
Actually, I am left with only a knoppix-cd: the installer formatted my hard
disk, but nothing positive happened, then.
Please HELP: how can I install debian?
Is really this d-i beta3 working?
Thanks
Luigi

Just to be honest, and practical: is there any chance for a non-technical one
like me to install debian?
At least, should I forget internet-install and order debian CD?
Or is it feasable to dowload CD images?

All I have now is a knoppix disc and an internet connection.

Is there any strange command I can try?

Bug#239270: During the install I selected US, The Netherlands, US American as keyboard layout and then continued the install. At the end when you can opped to run stuff like tasksel I did one install with and one without running tasksel. Then you get the Thank you for .... screen and then the prompt popsup, yet above the prompt there was the following message: error: Should never end up here using 'ANSI_X3.4-1968'. The guy's at #debian-boot asked me to post this bug report and told me that the bug must come from /usr/sbin/termcap. I don't know this, but maybe it a good pointer. They also asked me to add the /var/log/installer.log and /etc/locale.gen file. I don't know how to add those, but if needed I will mail them on request (By e-mail).

Processor: Pentium III (Coppermine)
Memory: I do not know the command to show memory...
Root Device: IDE

I arrived to the point where a message shows: The following Linux kernel
modules were detected as matching your hardware. If you know some are
unnecessary, or cause problems, you can choose not to load them...
Actually, many ethernet modules were shown: my machine has two ethernet cards.
The modules were (I guess) right choosen by the installer.

Well, there was NO WAY for me to continue:
- ENTER button did not react.
- the arrows were jus useful to skip from one choice to the next, from module to
module...
- C(ontinue) letter did not react.

So, I gave up.
Is it a bug, or am I too much of a beginner?
What shall I do?

Cellphones safe - at least in short term

The first nationwide analysis shows no increased risk of brain
cancer for at least 10 years, and any long term risks should also be
known soon. The new work is the first to be published from the huge
INTERPHONE study, organised by the International Agency for Research
on Cancer. It involves 13 different countries and aims answer
definitively the question of whether mobile phone use is safe.

Installation report failure 20031230

2004-01-01 Thread [EMAIL PROTECTED]
INSTALL REPORT

Debian-installer-version: 20031230
uname -a:
Date: 1 Jan 2004
Method: netinstall ISO image, no proxy, did not change any settings.

Machine: No name
Processor: Pentium 133 MMX
Memory: 64 Mb
Root Device: IDE Quantam 2.1 Gb (secondary master).
Root Size/partition table: 1.9 Gb hda1 ext3 (mounted as /), hda5 200 Mb
swap

Output of lspci: did not get a bootable system...

Base System Installation Checklist:

Initial boot worked:[O ]
Configure network HW: [O ]
Config network: [O ]
Detect CD: [O ]
Load installer modules: [O ]
Detect hard drives: [O ]
Partition hard drives: [O ]
Create file systems:[O ]
Mount partitions: [O ]
Install base system:[O ]
Install boot loader:[E ]
Reboot: [E ]
[O] = OK, [E] = Error (please elaborate below), [ ] = didn't try it

Comments/Problems:

This install got much further than the beta-1 install I tried a while
ago.

There were several times when something was happening and there was no
indication of what was happening (blue screens of life :-). Things like
(I assume) doing
the lilo configuration.

Some indication of what is actually happening when some of the
configuration scrollbars go by would be good. Some of them take a fair
while on this fairly slow
machine and it would warm the cockles of my heart to know that something
is in fact happening.

Had earlier used the older woody installer to load up debian on this
machine and then thought that I'd try out the new installer just to see
how it goes. Everything went fine until I got to base software install
and then there was a failure installing awk (probably the first
executable to be installed. I got an error that awk already existed.
Perhaps the user could be asked if they were upgrading
there system or making a new one ? This is a nicety, but useful.
In the next attempt, I nuked my old partitions and everything went well.

It looks like the system is installed on the machine, however there is a
problem with lilo configuration. On reboot, I get 99 99 99 99 99..
for about half a page and no boot. There is no option to make a boot
disk, so the machine is effectively not installed. Is there a problem
with the IDE drive being a secondary master (in the BIOS). Double
checked and the 'bootable' flag is set on the partition. This config
worked with the old installer, no boot floppy was needed.

Congratulations !

I'll spend sometimes to tune the system, then I got some java stuff to
do (for Debian) so I'll unsubscribe at the moment. But feel free to
contact me if you need some test on the powerbook.
So, is XFree working for you ? In this case, I'm very interested for any
tip...

Last time I tried miboot.image build myself it did not boot.
 I'll try
this one later this week to let you know.

I just wanted to add that this was with benH tree grabbed from BK.

My biggest problem is AHA2930B (SCSI controller) support in
 the kernel
that seemed to be missing from any pre-build package I found
 beside 2.2.20

AHA2930B is the only reason I use miboot instead of quik.

Mmm, The aic7xxx_old.c driver does have a line :

 PCI_VENDOR_ID_ADAPTEC2, PCI_DEVICE_ID_ADAPTEC2_2930U2,
 AHC_AIC7890,
But i suppose this is not the same (2930U2 instead of 2930B).

Here is the PCI info (/proc/pci from 2.2.20)

Bus 0, device 17, function 0:
SCSI storage controller: Adaptec AIC-7860 (rev 1).
Medium devsel. Fast back-to-back capable. IRQ 30. Master
  Capable. Latency=32. Min Gnt=4.Max Lat=4.
I/O at 0x0 [0x1].
Non-prefetchable 32 bit memory at 0x8080 [0x8080].

  OF device is:
bandi and it is not OF bootable :-( hence, no quik.

It seems to be in the aic7xxx driver.

This may be the one :

Adaptec AIC-7860 Ultra SCSI host adapter, /*
 AIC_7860 */

Each time I tried to boot with miBoot from a pre-build 2.4
 kernel it did
not find the adapter. Each I try to boot a kernel I build, (using
image.miboot, or zImage), miBoot just fails.

The kernel entries that correspond are :

 CONFIG_SCSI_AIC7XXX=m
 CONFIG_AIC7XXX_CMDS_PER_DEVICE=8
 CONFIG_AIC7XXX_RESET_DELAY_MS=15000
 # CONFIG_AIC7XXX_PROBE_EISA_VL is not set
 # CONFIG_AIC7XXX_BUILD_FIRMWARE is not set
 # CONFIG_AIC7XXX_DEBUG_ENABLE is not set
 CONFIG_AIC7XXX_DEBUG_MASK=0
 # CONFIG_AIC7XXX_REG_PRETTY_PRINT is not set
 CONFIG_SCSI_AIC79XX=m

 And for the aic7xxx_old :

 CONFIG_SCSI_AIC7XXX_OLD=m

So, both are built as modules, and since we have to use a 3 floppy set
for miboot anyway, it should be ok to use them :

 First flopyy : minimal kernel
Second floppy : minimal root image, with floppy drivers.
Third floppy : rest of the drivers, maybe more than one floppy.

So there may be support for this in the future.

 Friendly,

 Sven Luther

Lilo fails when an usb-storage media is attached

Hello to all!
On my home server I installed an unstable debian system on an

chroot instal failure

2003-07-27 Thread [EMAIL PROTECTED]
Hi,
I have a new Gigabyte K7 Triton motherboard with a 700 mhz amd Duron CPU
and 120 GB master and 40 GB slave Western Digital HDs. I've been trying to
instal Debian on this system, but when I try to instal the base system from
both the net and the cd I get this error message:
failure trying to run: chroot /target dpkg --force-depends --install
/var/cache/apt/archives/debconf_1.0_32_all.deb

and then:
something like
debootstrap failure return =1

If you need any more information please let me know. I'm not sure why the
instal fails at this point. Thank you,
Angela
