Bug#1064005: marked as done (netcfg: "get_netmask string 255.255.255.255" not working)
Your message dated Tue, 28 May 2024 21:17:09 + with message-id and subject line Bug#1064005: fixed in netcfg 1.187+deb12u1 has caused the Debian Bug report #1064005, regarding netcfg: "get_netmask string 255.255.255.255" not working to be marked as done. This means that you claim that the problem has been dealt with. If this is not the case it is now your responsibility to reopen the Bug report if necessary, and/or fix the problem forthwith. (NB: If you are a system administrator and have no idea what this message is talking about, this may indicate a serious mail system misconfiguration somewhere. Please contact ow...@bugs.debian.org immediately.) -- 1064005: https://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=1064005 Debian Bug Tracking System Contact ow...@bugs.debian.org with problems --- Begin Message --- Source: netcfg Version: 1.187 Severity: normal Dear Maintainer, Setting a netmask of 255.255.255.255 (in my case using preseed, but I guess the same happens if using the UI) fails the installer with Unreachable gateway (even if the gateway is set). I agree it can be seen as an odd setup, but it's valid and works when configured manually in busybox and Linux. My usecase is creating routed Debian VMs, where the host have a static route to the guest's IP (or v6 /128). With a smaller subnet (like /23), we would have to use proxy ARP which is usually not recommended. You can see more information in: https://phabricator.wikimedia.org/phame/post/view/312/ganeti_on_modern_network_design/ My current workaround is to use a smaller netmask then run the following in early_command: IFACE=$(ip -4 route list 0/0 | sed -r 's/.*dev ([^ ]*) .*/\1/' | head -1) IP="$(ip address show dev $IFACE | egrep '^[[:space:]]+inet ' | cut -d ' ' -f 6 | cut -d '/' -f 1)" ip addr del $IP dev $IFACE ip addr add $IP/32 dev $IFACE ip route add 10.192.24.1 dev $IFACE scope link ip route add default via 10.192.24.1 Right after "netcfg" It would of course be cleaner if netcfg were to handle a /32 "out of the box". Similarly, DHCP can allocate such IPs, see for example : https://blog.fhrnet.eu/2020/03/07/dhcp-server-on-a-32-subnet/ I haven't tested DHCP in Debian Installer with such setup though. Please let me know if I can be of any help. I suppose it could be some fallout from the kmod upload > which included some changes of yours, hence the ping. > > > https://tracker.debian.org/news/1491892/accepted-kmod-31-1-source-into-unstable/ Thank you for the report. In investigating it, I note that reproducing the failure was unexpectedly difficult. debian-installer fails to build from source in unstable for unrelated reasons. I request that you update the package more frequently and keep it in a buildable state to ease QA efforts of others. It turns out that /sbin/depmod points to /bin/busybox and /usr/sbin/depmod points to ../bin/kmod. As such, merge-usr does not have a good idea of what to do and rightly refuses to continue. These two files are to be considered a file conflict according to the Debian policy as they only differ in aliasing. I argue that this was a bug before merged-/usr and merged-/usr just makes it visible now. The underlying conflict has existed earlier and was resolved arbitrarily dependent on the order of unpacks. The real solution here is to agree on whether busybox-udeb or kmod-udeb is supposed to provide depmod and only ship it once. Since there is no other consumer of udebs, it does not make sense to install it in both. Cyril, please reassign the bug to the right package (i.e. the one that should not be providing depmod). I also recommend to establish QA for all udebs to automatically detect, report and address such conflicts as they evidently cause undefined behaviour otherwise. That can be as simple as collecting file lists of all udebs and comparing them. It would be better if this were not the case, especially now that D-I is /usr-merged, so one will presumably get to use whichever of those is unpacked last. This suggests to me that the versions from kmod-udeb should be used, and busybox-udeb should be configured to no longer generate these binaries. BTW I'm assuming that these binaries only make sense on Linux, so it's that it's fine that non-linux builds will not have them (kmod-udeb being linux only). While this may be a requirement for e.g. grub2, it is not necessarily required when not using grub2 but using UKIs to build EFI executables that can directly mount the encrypted root filesystem. While UKIs aren't currently supported, I would still expect partman-crypto to let me partition an encrypted root filesystem without separate /boot filesystem, at least after having ignored the warnings or in combination with the `nobootloader` udeb. I would suggest letting users ignore the warning and continue if they really want to, similar to the warning by LVM2. -- System Information: Debian Release: trixie/sid Architecture: amd64 (x86_64) Kernel: Linux 6.1.0-9-amd64 (SMP w/8 CPU threads; PREEMPT) Locale: LANG=en_US.UTF-8, LC_CTYPE=en_US.UTF-8 (charmap=UTF-8), LANGUAGE not set Shell: /bin/sh linked to /usr/bin/dash Init: systemd (via /run/systemd/system) LSM: SELinux: enabled - Mode: Enforcing - Policy name: bauen1-policy --- End Message --- --- Begin Message --- Source: partman-crypto Source-Version: 124 Done: Luca Boccassi We believe that the bug you reported is fixed in the latest version of partman-crypto, which is due to be installed in the Debian FTP archive. In d-i, this works very different than in other installers, which causes quite a bit of confusion for users. Firstly, the instructions start off with "You need to set a password for 'root'", followed by seemingly uninteresting text about what a good password should be, which makes it incredibly easy for users to miss the part that sudo won't be set up for the first user. So, many users, and especially newcomers to Debian, follow the instructions in the first line and are then surprised when they can't use sudo from their user from their newly installed system. Would it perhaps make more sense to move the root password setup to the expert install d-i preseed entirely? Since this is likely only something that expert users would require in the first place? Either that, or move the explanation of what happens upward so that it's more prominent and not so easy to miss. In the latter case, it might also be worth while changing the first line that says "you need to..." so that user won't feel compelled to immediately start typing a root password and click on next. Thank you for considering, -Jonathan --- End Message --- --- Begin Message --- With latest user-setup upload 1.97, this has been dealed with, so closing. -- Holger Wansing PGP-Fingerprint: 496A C6E8 1442 4B34 8508 3529 59F1 87CA 156E B076--- End Message ---

Key management is done using LUKS2, just like with dm-crypt, so that all existing functionality works out of the box (tokens, passphrases, keyfiles, etc). A standard LUKS2 header is used, which sits unencrypted on the disk as with dm- crypt, and the nested range is then encrypted using OPAL's functionality. I have added support for these new options in partman-crypto, MR on Salsa is open: https://salsa.debian.org/installer-team/partman-crypto/-/merge_requests/7 The new options are shown only in the manual partitioning mode, and only if the kernel, cryptsetup and the device all support this functionality, otherwise they are hidden. A factory reset option for the disk is also exposed. A small utility to call the required ioctl to check for support on a given disk is added too. I have tested this with a Kingston drive and it seems to work as expected. -- Kind regards, Luca Boccassi signature.asc Description: This is a digitally signed message part --- End Message --- --- Begin Message --- Source: partman-crypto Source-Version: 123 Done: Luca Boccassi We believe that the bug you reported is fixed in the latest version of partman-crypto, which is due to be installed in the Debian FTP archive. Bug#998408: marked as done (debian-installer: "good password" advise)
Your message dated Fri, 3 May 2024 21:42:01 +0200 with message-id <20240503214201.b0b389be5197d4a9d1253...@mailbox.org> and subject line Uploading user-setup: update password selection advice has caused the Debian Bug report #998408, regarding debian-installer: "good password" advise to be marked as done. Please contact ow...@bugs.debian.org immediately.) -- 998408: https://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=998408 Debian Bug Tracking System Contact ow...@bugs.debian.org with problems --- Begin Message --- Source: debian-installer Version: 20210731+deb11u1 Severity: normal Tags: upstream X-Debbugs-Cc: alx.manpa...@gmail.com Dear Maintainer, The Debian installer contains the following advise: "A good password will contain a mixture of letters, numbers and punctuation and should be changed at regular intervals." I disagree with this statement, which has been passing around for decades in many different environments, as a "universal truth" which only causes headaches and ends up necessarily in <https://xkcd.com/936/>. The opposite is actually true: - _Good_ passwords don't need to be changed that much. When was the last time you changed your PGP key? Probably never. - Especially, if you use a different password for every different account, you don't need to change them at all, unless they have been stolen, or you suspect that might have happened. - Adding punctuation to passwords only adds problems to yourself when you need to type it in a different keyboard, not to a computer that can brute force it. To put some numbers: a) Different characters if you use only (uppercase and lowercase) letters and numbers: 26 letters * 2 + 10 numbers = 62 b) Now, assume you can use the symbols available in your keyboard. My ANSI keyboard shows 32 different symbols other than the above. 62 + 32 = 94 Let's compare a 32-byte password using (b), to a 64-byte password using only (a): 62**64 = 5.16e+114 combinations 94**32 = 1.38e+63 combinations You would only need 38 characters of an alphanumeric password to have the same strength aprox (1.29e+68) than a braindamaged symbol password of 32 characters. So, you're adding difficulty to typing your own password for no reason all when you could just add a few more bytes to your sane password. If you're using a password manager, it can surely remember 64 bytes of alphanumeric bytes. I'm not sure if it will remember correctly some weird combination of characters. So if youre using a password manager, the best advise would be to use $(makepasswd --chars 64) and forget it. I must confess I have passwords that would make xkcd guys laugh, and they are for the few sites that still have those weird requirements. And when I'm forced to update it, you can guess how I do it :) (I don't feel guilty; not my fault). And if you need a password that you should remember, like your BIOS password, or your login password, you can't use a password manager, so there's even more reason to use a memorable but long one, and forget about the symbols. $(goxkcdpwgen) should work for you, and maybe you can use some options to it if you want a longer one. So my advise would be instead: "A good password will not need rare characters, but rather be as long as possible. Having a memorable random password can help it be longer, and therefore stronger." Or something similar. Sorry for the rant :-) Thanks, Alex -- System Information: Debian Release: bookworm/sid APT prefers unstable APT policy: (500, 'unstable'), (1, 'experimental') Architecture: amd64 (x86_64) Kernel: Linux 5.14.0-3-amd64 (SMP w/12 CPU threads) Locale: LANG=en_US.UTF-8, LC_CTYPE=en_US.UTF-8 (charmap=UTF-8), LANGUAGE=en_US:en Shell: /bin/sh linked to /usr/bin/dash Init: systemd (via /run/systemd/system) LSM: AppArmor: enabled --- End Message --- --- Begin Message --- Version: 1.97 Forgot to mention bug closure in changelog before uploading, so closing now manually. -- Holger Wansing PGP-Fingerprint: 496A C6E8 1442 4B34 8508 3529 59F1 87CA 156E B076--- End Message ---

This is no longer current good advice (since 2017): "Verifiers SHOULD NOT require memorized secrets to be changed arbitrarily (e.g., periodically). However, verifiers SHALL force a change if there is evidence of compromise of the authenticator." https://nvlpubs.nist.gov/nistpubs/SpecialPublications/NIST.SP.800-63b.pdf I happen to like their suggestion of providing a password-strength meter, but that would be a separate bug. The current base-installer uses the default debootstrap settings which end up unconditionally installing systems with the merged-usr-via-symlinks deployment method which is broken by design, please see: <https://lists.debian.org/debian-devel/2019/02/msg00251.html> I'm aware the original request to change the debootstrap default got unfortunately moved to the tech-ctte. :( But regardless of that outcome I'd like to request to have a way to install using debootstrap's --no-merged-usr option, to not have to install from stretch and then upgrade to buster, or having to drop into a shell and do manual stuff from within the installer. In addition it would be also nice if that option was passed whenever /usr is not on its own partition, because then the properties from the merged-/usr concept are not relevant anymore, but we get all the downsides of the broken deployment method. If this was to be applied for buster, I'd be happy to provide patches. Otherwise I guess I might need to end up looking to generate alternative netinst somewhere else or something. :( Thanks, Guillem --- End Message --- --- Begin Message --- On Sun, Feb 24, 2019 at 03:10:17AM +0100, Guillem Jover wrote: > I'm aware the original request to change the debootstrap default got > unfortunately moved to the tech-ctte. :( And ctte made an decision. In both cases the 'Oh no!' is shown. The last known good netinst image was from 20230910_0509. The first netinst image with this issue is from 20230910_1109. This narrows down the number of possible causes a bit. To ensure that inconsistent combinations of libraries with their reverse-dependencies are never installed together, it is necessary to have a library transition, which is most easily done by renaming the runtime library package. Since turning on 64-bit time_t is being handled centrally through a change to the default dpkg-buildflags (https://bugs.debian.org/1037136), it is important that libraries affected by this ABI change all be uploaded close together in time. Therefore I have prepared a 0-day NMU for discover which will initially be uploaded to experimental if possible, then to unstable after packages have cleared binary NEW. Please find the patch for this NMU attached. If you have any concerns about this patch, please reach out ASAP. Although this package will be uploaded to experimental immediately, there will be a period of several days before we begin uploads to unstable; so if information becomes available that your package should not be included in the transition, there is time for us to amend the planned uploads. -- System Information: Debian Release: trixie/sid APT prefers unstable APT policy: (500, 'unstable'), (1, 'experimental') Architecture: amd64 (x86_64) Kernel: Linux 6.5.0-15-generic (SMP w/16 CPU threads; PREEMPT) Kernel taint flags: TAINT_PROPRIETARY_MODULE, TAINT_OOT_MODULE Locale: LANG=en_US.UTF-8, LC_CTYPE=en_US.UTF-8 (charmap=UTF-8), LANGUAGE not set Shell: /bin/sh linked to /usr/bin/dash Init: systemd (via /run/systemd/system) diff -Nru discover-2.1.2/debian/changelog discover-2.1.2/debian/changelog --- discover-2.1.2/debian/changelog 2022-01-09 07:48:08.0 + +++ discover-2.1.2/debian/changelog 2024-02-01 04:30:47.0 + @@ -1,3 +1,10 @@ +discover (2.1.2-10.1) experimental; urgency=medium + + * Non-maintainer upload. + * Rename libraries for 64-bit time_t transition. + + -- Michael Hudson-Doyle Thu, 01 Feb 2024 04:30:47 + + discover (2.1.2-10) unstable; urgency=medium * Modernize packaging a little: diff -Nru discover-2.1.2/debian/control discover-2.1.2/debian/control --- discover-2.1.2/debian/control 2022-01-09 07:30:59.0 + +++ discover-2.1.2/debian/control 2024-02-01 04:30:46.0 + @@ -10,17 +10,20 @@ Package: discover Architecture: any -Depends: ${shlibs:Depends}, ${misc:Depends}, libdiscover2 (= ${binary:Version}) +Depends: ${shlibs:Depends}, ${misc:Depends}, libdiscover2t64 (= ${binary:Version}) Suggests: lsb-base Conflicts: discover1 (<< 2.0) Description: hardware identification system - Discover is a hardware identification system based on the libdiscover2 + Discover is a hardware identification system based on the libdiscover2t64 library. Problem: Fresh debian installation includes LibreOffice, but when installed in the MATE environment, it installs the libreoffice-gtk package but does NOT install the libreoffice-gnome package. How I noticed: LO was unable to open e.g. "sftp://; files. If opened from LO, it was as if you hit ESC instead of ENTER on open dialog -- nothing happened. If opened from file browser (Caja), it launched LO which then immediately exited. How I fixed: Manually installed libreoffice-gnome I don't know where to go to tweak this in the distro, but I suspect you do! Please contact ow...@bugs.debian.org immediately.) -- 1037972: https://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=1037972 Debian Bug Tracking System Contact ow...@bugs.debian.org with problems --- Begin Message --- Package: debian-12.0.0-amd64-DVD-1.iso File: /etc/apt/source.list Severity: high (security) Bug Description : After installation of Debian 12 with the 'debian-12.0.0-amd64-DVD-1.iso' image, the '/etc/apt/source.list' file contains only one entry for installing or upgrading the system: deb cdrom:[Debian GNU/Linux 12.0.0 _Bookworm_ - Official amd64 DVD Binary-1 with firmware 20230610-10:23]/ bookworm main non-free-firmware After editing the 'source.list' file with the 'software and updates' software and activating all remote repositories of the first tab of this program, only one line is added to the 'source.list' file ': deb https://deb.debian.org/debian/ bookworm main contrib non-free non-free-firmware It therefore lacks parameters to perform updates / security repertories on this DVD version of 'source.list' file, while in the Live ISO version of Debian 12 Cinnamon does not have this type of problem. Someone who doesn't know Debian and has installed the DVD edition of Debian on a machine can find themselves really embarrassed some time later since the security updates for their machine are not done without manually updating update the 'source.list' file. Thank you to correct this as soon as possible. Best regards. Philippe --- End Message --- --- Begin Message --- closing bug --- End Message ---
