Bug#386070: vgcfgbackup: invalid option -- f
This problem is at my end. For a reason that I've not yet determined, I have some old stale manfiles hanging around from the previously purged lvm10 package. This bug may be closed. Patrick Caulfield wrote: Jesse Molina wrote: Package: lvm10 Version: 1:1.0.8-12 Severity: normal Hi When passing options -f or --file to vgcfgbackup, I get an error; vgcfgbackup: invalid option -- f The man page says that this is a valid option. Not sure if the man page is out of date, or there is something wrong with this tool. I can't see in the man page where there is a -f option to vgcfgbackup. vgcfgrestore has one, or it's possible you also have the lvm2 tools installed. Bug#387343: [l10n] Updated Czech translation of menu
For some reason, the string did not get marked as fuzzy...which makes the change in original string invisible to translators. Beware, fr.po is different because you commited a rogue update. Hmmm, strange. I may have messed it up earlier but certainly not in the update you mention: PatchSet 433 Date: 2006/09/09 10:41:22 Author: bubulle Branch: HEAD Tag: (none) Log: Update PO files from the menu.pot sent by Bill to debian-i18n Add menu.pot to the CVS with Bill's agreement. The Update PO files was made with gettext utilities (msgmerge -U file.po menu.pot). I wouldn't call this a rogue update..:-) That means that the usage line in fr.po was already the same than now and was not marked fuzzy...even though it did not have the --version part. No time now for getting the full log on that file (and anyway, that would require online access which I don't have now).there ahs been an error at some moment, that's sure..:) Members: po/*.po I'd suggest marking this string as fuzzy for all files which have not been recently updated. Most of them probably do not have that translation for --version. Actually, they have the translation for --version in the second-last template. I think it is marked correctly fuzzy. Yes, indeed. The only translation where that string was not marked fuzzy while the --version is missing seems to be the French one. This maybe comes from a too quick update in the past. As far as I see other translations in the CVS correctly have this string as fuzzy which means that translators should be careful updating it. I warned the French translator about this string. Thus, we shouldn't have further mistakes. signature.asc Description: Digital signature
Bug#387984: [INTL:ku] Kurdish translations for debian-installer
Quoting Christian Perrier ([EMAIL PROTECTED]): Quoting Erdal Ronahi ([EMAIL PROTECTED]): Package: debian-installer Version: N/A Severity: wishlist Tags: l10n patch New Kurdish translations are attached. Hmmm, I'm OK to commit these but don't you have commit access to the SVN? The translator answered me privately that he doesnt and *doesn't want to* (we cannot learn about each VCS used by every free software project). I'm currently insisting as I don't want to enter a special case loop where, for some languages, the coordinator is allowed to not use the SVN and, thus, add load on us. Kurdish began before we established the formal new language process which means we never went throught the step where it becomes highly clear that our work method is the SVN. That's too bad and I don't want this mistake to repeathowever, I still think that having a small checkout of packages/po is definitely not a big hassle for translators and we shouldn't make exceptions to tour policy. For that reason, I ask other team members to not commit this translation yet. The discussion will probably continue in private with Erdal. signature.asc Description: Digital signature

Bug#235498: defrag: ext3 support would be nice :-)
Yes, it would. ext3 is journaled, and usually does not need to be defragmented, but it would be nice if there was a program that did that. According to wikipedia, this program can defrag ext3 if ext3 is temporarily downgraded to ext2, and then re-upgraded. I don't know what the consequences of this might be. That bin-NMU bug was a normal bug until yesterday, the libtasn1-2 was set as important. Which means there was no hurry to fix them. Somebody changed the settings yesterday and you NMUed the same day, do you consider that as a normal way of NMUing? Not waiting a day and not contacting the maintainer first? I object to the NMU because a NMU was not required and you didn't try to contact the maintainer first which is not a nice way to act The maintainer had already 12 days to say something in the bug report, I don't think you can count that as 1 day in no matter what mathematics!!! Bug#387991: [Pkg-ltsp-devel] Bug#387991: nbdswapd: Should accept swap directory configuration
[Vagrant Cascadian] in /etc/ltsp/nbdswapd.conf: SWAP=$(mktemp -p /var/opt/ltsp/swapfiles/) :P Right. if i add thse instructions to the swap documentation, would this be enough? It would help, at least. But isn't the choice of configuration variable making it too easy to mess up the system? If one do SWAP=/tmp/swap, it will break completely, right? Why do you want to be able to specify a single PATH, instead of specifying where the swap files will be stored, and leave it to the script to come up with an unique name? I suspect the interface design for the configuration options should be reconsidered because of tihs. To me, the SWAP option do not make sense. Bug#242238: Request
Hello, Thanks for your suggestion of filters to incorporate the indexing of OpenDoc files. Do think it would best if the files were placed in the examples section or in a separated contrib section in the documentation directory? Secondly, if the files are to placed verbatim then they must have a copyright assertion (even short files :)). Could you please put one on top? You could perhaps then place them under a suitable license or in the public domain. Alternatively, we could re-write these files and attribute the idea of their incorporation to you. Please let me know which you prefer. Thanks for your contribution, Regards, Kapil. -- signature.asc Description: Digital signature
Bug#291070: Package description
Hello, I am planning to adopt swish++ so I was trying to clear up its list of bugs. I couldn't see exactly which part of the package description suggests that swish++ is superior to swish-e. Enclosed is the current description. I would be happy to take your suggestions into account while uploading a newer version to the archive. Thanks and regards, Kapil. -- current package description= Description: Simple Document Indexing System for Humans: C++ version SWISH++ is a Unix-based file indexing and searching engine (typically used to index and search files on web sites). It was based on SWISH-E although SWISH++ is a complete rewrite. SWISH++ was developed to circumvent author's difficulties with using the SWISH-E package. SWISH++ features: * Lightning-fast indexing * Indexes META elements, ALT, and other attributes * Selectively not index text within HTML or XHTML elements * Intelligently index mail and news files * Index Unix manual page files * Apply filters to files on-the-fly prior to indexing * Index non-text files such as Microsoft Office documents * Modular indexing architecture * Index new files incrementally * Index remote web sites * Handles large collections of files * Lightning-fast searching * Optional word stemming (suffix stripping) * Ability to run as a search server * Easy-to-parse results format * Generously commented source code end of package description= signature.asc Description: Digital signature

Bug#147500: [pkg-firebird-general] Bug#147500: firebird2 on sparc
Clint Adams -- 16.09.2006 03:00 --: Does firebird2 packages build on sparc after this change? If yes, I'll be glad to initiate an upload that adds sparc to the list of supported architectures. Unfortunately not; it chokes. I've mistakenly deleted the build log, but I recall that it was trying to run a program with 'gen' in the name, and then this happened. make[4]: *** [empty.fdb] Segmentation fault I see. Unfortunately, upstream's way for handling these is to require a backtrace (or core dump), preferably from a debug-mode build. This is not an easy task, even for people experienced with firebird. I could try it, but have no access to a sparc machine (still in NM) Looking at developer list archives, there were people trying to build firebird in linux/sparc (years ago), but no success stories. The source, however, seems to be prepared. There must be some incompleteness in detecting linux/sparc combination or some such. Bug#388035: boottime.kmap for Croatian has broken altgr+. and altgr+,
Package: install Version: etch beta 3 Hi, I've no idea where to file this, so please reassign wherever necessary. The console keymap installed when one installs from a etch beta netinst CD has two broken keybindings, fixed by the attached patch. Bug#387998: udev rule to support Kodak CD33 missing
Ivan Baldo wrote: Package: libgphoto2-2 Version: 2.2.1-2 Severity: normal Tags: patch I can't believe this, is it really necessary to add absolutely all the vendor and product ids in order to have proper permissions? UDEV can't look at the interface class and subclass (6 represents Imaging and 1 in the subclass represents Still Image Capture) in order to set permissions to camera? It should already do this, if it doesn't work it may be a udev bug or misunderstanding of my part, but that line was checked with udev maintainer. When I run this command with a size wildcard like this: xlsfonts -fn '-*-helvetica-medium-r-normal--*-*-*-*-*-*-ISO8859-*' I only see some discrete sizes from the pixel fonts (8, 10, 11, 12, 14, 17, 18, 20, 24, 25, 38) but also some scalable fonts with size 0: -adobe-helvetica-medium-r-normal--0-0-0-0-p-0-iso8859-1 -adobe-helvetica-medium-r-normal--0-0-100-100-p-0-iso8859-1 -adobe-helvetica-medium-r-normal--0-0-75-75-p-0-iso8859-1 I get pretty much the same output. As far as I can see this is the gsfonts-x11 font as well as the 100dpi and the 75dpi pixel font (both via the scalable font path line). But if I run xlsfonts with -fn and a concrete size, which isn't listed above, xlsfonts offers me this font too: $ xlsfonts -fn '-*-helvetica-medium-r-normal--113-*-*-*-*-*-ISO8859-1' | uniq -adobe-helvetica-medium-r-normal--113-818-100-100-p-0-iso8859-1 Maybe you can try to find out, whether/why this behaves different on your system. However, in this particular case it doesn't harm at all if acpid is not running: the logfile gets rotated, if there is no acpid, there is no need for it to reopen any logs. Bug#384680: bluez-utils: cannot enable authentication by a PIN
Oyez, oyez! I have finally understood what was happening: the link_key_request serves as an authentication mechanism thanks to the link key storage in /var/lib/bluetooth/bdaddr (I noticed this folder's persistence by chance). Removing the folders under /var/lib/bluetooth/ is sufficient to make a new connection fail (if the PINs are set suitably). The working of the authentication certainly is not a mistake, but it is misleading. Since the documentation is not yet making the bluez packages bloated, do you think you could add this information piece in it so that another unskilled non-specialist user does not loose his time? Bug#385272: closed by Julien BLACHE [EMAIL PROTECTED] (Re: Bug#385272: mcelog: Please include timestamps in the logfile)
Hi Julien, I discussed the timestamp idea with Andi Kleen, and, basically, it's of no use because the precision of the timestamp would suck. The kernel collects MCE data every 5 minutes by default, then mcelog runs every 5 minutes, collecting the data collected by the kernel. [..] Andi strongly advised against adding any timestamp whatsoever because it really can't be precise enough to be even remotely useful. Uhm, if I've got a logfile full of MCE entries after (e.g.) returning from a weeks vacation a timestamp with a granularity of 5 minutes is better than none, right? I can understand that Andi doesn't want to implement this for the given reasons but the cron hackaround is useful, will help people and should be robust enough (the only problem I could see would be exceeding the storage size of the variables of the shell when storing the log messages, but this is highly unlikely). Adding a hint that the timestamps are only estimates (either in the log or the README) or letting the user choose if he wants inaccurate timestamps should mitigate any user complaints (if there should be any. I pretty much doubt it). So, closing this bug as a feature request which unfortunately can't be implemented. I'd opt for reconsidering that, cutting usability because the gathered information isn't 100% accurate isn't good practice. best regards, Michael -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of unsubscribe. Bug#388035: boottime.kmap for Croatian has broken altgr+. and altgr+,
On Mon, Sep 18, 2006 at 10:36:16AM +0200, Frans Pop wrote: Oddly enough, when I ran kbd-config after install and explicitly selected qwertz/Croat, it fixed this problem. No idea how, since the console-data file also has it broken (I just filed a separate bug report about that, too.) If I understand you correctly you selected the Croation keymap and after the reboot noticed the problem with the bindings? A patch for boottime.kmap makes no sense. boottime.kmap is just a copy of whatever keymap was selected during installation. So, that you see the same error in qwertz/Croat makes perfect sense. Indeed d-i uses udebs generated with console-data as the source for keymaps. Ah, so one copy came from a .deb, and the other from the .udeb. Gotcha. As you already filed a bug (I assume with the same patch) against console-data and as the problem after installation should automatically get solved when that is fixed, I am closing this bug report. It's not actually the very same patch because the formatting of the file is different, but the content is the same. Thanks. -- 2. I can understand that Andi doesn't want to implement this for the given reasons but the cron hackaround is useful, will help people and should be robust enough (the only problem I could see would be exceeding the storage size of the variables of the shell when storing the log messages, but this is highly Pipe mcelog output through annotate-output (from devscripts) to avoid that :) unlikely). Adding a hint that the timestamps are only estimates (either in the log or the README) or letting the user choose if he wants inaccurate timestamps should mitigate any user complaints (if there should be any. I pretty much doubt it). Nobody reads the damn README, so that's completely useless, and I can already see the bug reports coming in claiming that the timestamp isn't accurate. So, closing this bug as a feature request which unfortunately can't be implemented. I'd opt for reconsidering that, cutting usability because the gathered information isn't 100% accurate isn't good practice. I'll include a suggestion to install the devscripts package and edit the cron file to use annotate-output in the next upload, for people who actually do read the README. You probably know that already, but just in case: you can edit the cron file, it's tagged as a conffile. Bug#387143: phpwiki errors on loading; Driver initialization failed for handler: db4...
Isaac Bennetch wrote: I'm still surprised that you feel my files are in a non-standard place, since aptitude should have handled everything automatically, I certainly don't remember moving it and would have no reason to have done so. `dpkg -L phpwiki` lists /var/lib/phpwiki for what that's worth. Any more than that, though, and I'm at a loss. I may be incorrect about the filename. The history of this is that the PHPwiki package has not actually dealt with db4 files for a long time (1.3.7-1 in 2004 was the last release that actually created db4 files). Newer releases shouldn't break your db4 setup, but a brand new fresh install will be setup to use sqlite by default instead of db4. I took over the package just after 1.3.7-4, so I've never dealt with db4 stuff directly, hence my confusion. After taking a deeper look at the old packages it seems that your file probably is in a standard location. I just wasn't expecting the final 4 in the filename... Additionally, I've backed up my phpwiki files, purged the package (and it's dependancies), and reinstalled. It worked. I assume this was with a SQLite database at /var/lib/phpwiki/phpwiki_pagedb.db ? I copied my phpwiki_pagedb.db4 to replace the default, and there was no change (it didn't break, but my wiki didn't appear, either). This is probably because the config file was still looking for a SQLite database and you copied a DB4 database on top of it. Finally I copied my config.ini file to replace the default in /etc/phpwiki/, and it broke again -- so it does seem to be my config.ini file, though I hadn't edited it since it was working, so I still don't know what the problem was. Not that it matters much, though, if I'm able to recover my database I'll be happy (and if not, hey, that's what backups are for)... At this stage I'd suggest asking the upstream mailing list for help. It doesn't seem to be anything that is identifiably wrong with the package from the information that you've provided so far. If you can successfully get the data out of the db4 database, I would suggest migrating to a SQLite backend. Hope that helps. -- Matt Brown [EMAIL PROTECTED] Mob +64 21 611 544 www.mattb.net.nz signature.asc Description: OpenPGP digital signature

Bug#384356: Depending on mzscheme is a bad idea
unblock 384356 by 386485 thanks After discussing with Ari Pollak (maintainer of mzscheme) on IRC, he states that hs-plugins should not depend on mzscheme to build its documentation. mzscheme is not built on all Debian architecture, and depending on such package only to build documentation seems a bit too much. Don Stewart, author of hs-plugins, is switching to full Haddock documentation for the next release. So this won't be problem anymore for the next upstream release. In the meantime, possible solutions that I see to solve this issue: a) Don't build the documentation at all, and point the user to hs-plugins website. b) Build to documentation on the maintainer system and include it in the Debian patch. c) Use another LaTeX to HTML converter to build the documentation with the package. Since upstream is switching to full Haddock documentation for the next release, I would advocate for b) as a temporary solution. I will work on a patch implementing this solution if there is no opositions. Regards, -- Jérémy signature.asc Description: Digital signature

If I run the collector every 5 minutes fetching all messages that have been generated since the last invocation the granularity should be 5 minutes, or am I missing something there? Anyway, that's still negligible for that sort of errors IMHO. Nobody reads the damn README, so that's completely useless, and I can already see the bug reports coming in claiming that the timestamp isn't accurate. Could be, you probably have more experience wrt user complaints ;). I'd opt for reconsidering that, cutting usability because the gathered information isn't 100% accurate isn't good practice. I'll include a suggestion to install the devscripts package and edit the cron file to use annotate-output in the next upload, for people who actually do read the README. Thanks. You probably know that already, but just in case: you can edit the cron file, it's tagged as a conffile. Yeah, I just try to reduce customizing work that needs to be done for packages I use on our servers, if the changes should prove to be useful for the whole community and not only our setups.
