totem-xine, noatun, kaffeine, and even luvcview (a small programme to
check the integrated webcam, the only that works for my webcam at the

in a normal environment but not in a 3D accelerated environment ).

Do these work with Option AccelMethod EXA?

this functionality. Could it will be useful not only to me;)

According to the sources it looks like this already has been fixed in

Bug#427367: vlc should support spaces in filenames

Correction, it seems that the colon was the offender. Thus, please
fix the colon handling. Not every filename containing a colon is a
URL, especially not if a file with the same name exists locally.

It has been fixed in upstream svn trunk
 (https://trac.videolan.org/vlc/changeset/20678).

Cool!

In the mean time you can use vlc file://foo:bar.avi

Even easier is vlc `pwd`/foo:bar.avi, i.e using the full path.
But still, it's counter-intuitive. I'm glad it's fixed upstream.

Regards,

Joey

Bug#430630: Memory corruption due to update_trans_effect() using stale icon parameters

2007-06-26 Thread Michel Dänzer
Package: gnome-session
Version: 2.18.2-1
Severity: important
Tags: patch

Since the upgrade to 2.18, I had been plagued by gnome-session hanging
on startup of any 'non-trivial' session. Attaching gdb showed the hang
to be a deadlock because it crashed somewhere inside the glibc memory
management code, and the signal handler tried to use memory management
functions as well, so it hung waiting for the glibc internal memory
management mutex.

After a long debugging session chasing countless red herrings, I finally
tracked down the cause of the crash. update_trans_effect could end up
using stale icon dimensions, so it would write beyond the end of the
memory allocated for the pixel data. The attached patch fixes this.

Bug#325389: Newer upstream version

2007-06-26 Thread DS

2007/6/25, Daniel Gimpelevich [EMAIL PROTECTED]:

Thank you so much for finally packaging this program. It would be much
appreciated if you could update the package to version 3.0.1, which was
released exactly three weeks after you packaged 3.0.0, как на зло. TIA

I can do this, but actually there is many troubles with this program,
so it can't be part of Debian now. A lot of upstream work needed.
Brief explaining you can read on
http://lists.debian.org/debian-mentors/2007/01/msg00345.html
If upstream will work on these problems, I'll continue trying to
include it to Debian.
Now I can just produce unofficial package, if you want.

Which are the pidfile locations in the configuration files ?

I do have the same problem.

And I have in /etc/sympa/sympa.conf:
pidfile /var/spool/sympa/sympa.pid

Since this is a previous historical value of the parameter, it might be
nice to warn the user of this error... it's quite annoying because you get
a daily mail about the inability to restart Sympa (due to logrotate).

Even better would be for the init script to use the parameter specified
in the sympa.conf file. I don't see a good reason to have to indicate it
two different places. This only lead to such stupid errors.

(I can confirm that replacing /var/spool/sympa/sympa.pid by
/var/run/sympa/sympa.pid fixes this problem)

Cheers,

If ejabberd doesn't open ports for listenibg it usually means errors
in config file. The error messages should appear in
/var/log/ejabberd/ejabberd.log or in /var/log/ejabberd/sasl.log. Could
you find and show them?

I am not able to connect to the server after starting it (check ports in config)

zeno:~# /etc/init.d/ejabberd stop
Stopping jabber server: ejabberd already stopped.
zeno:~#

So the init script does not know that ejabberd has been started (perhaps
because the server does not open listen ports), when I start the server
manually, everything seems to work (even stopping
the daemon using the init script).

This puzzles me a bit. But anyway, show the logs, and we'll try to
figure out what's wrong.

Best wishes!

My workaround was to downgrade xserver-xorg and it's modules to
the etch versions, it seems to work fine.

I could not see anything logged either to Xorg.log or what startx
 produced.

Not even on stderr of startx or the X server itself? If the X server
ends up attempting to call an unresolved function, it gets killed
immediately with no chance for any cleanup or logging, and the only way
to detect this is in its stderr output.

well, it might be. But the result is that under Debian the installation

Hmmm, looks like I have to go and patch up my own uname :-(

Bug#430589: Patch problem

2007-06-26 Thread sr
Hi,

I just realised while reading some other mailing list archives that it may
not be desirable to use the user 'default', in case you have a real user
named as such.

In which case, I'm not sure how to fix the error that occurs while trying
to change the default user settings...

As it works for me, I'll probably keep it in my own version of the script.

The second issue still stands though (the autodetect config thing).

Thanks,

Sid

Bug#430629: libproc-pid-file-perl: should not change $ENV{'PATH'}

2007-06-26 Thread Felix C. Stegerman
Package: libproc-pid-file-perl
Version: 1.24-5
Severity: important
Tags: patch

The fix for bug #425467 changed Proc::PID::File::verify so that
$ENV{'PATH'} is set to /usr/bin:/bin before qx/.../ is used so that
it works OK in taint mode. Unfortunately, the way this is currently
implemented means that the changes to $ENV{'PATH'} affect any perl
scripts or modules that use Proc::PID::File.

Thus I was suddenly confronted with a mysterious Can't open program
for reading: No such file or directory error in one of my perl
scripts.

The fix is very simple: just save $ENV{'PATH'} before changing it, and
restore it when done. I've attached a patch doing just this.

After upgrading to libxml2 version 2.6.29.dfsg-1 on a box running lenny,
 xscreensaver-demo stopped working.

Now, when I try to start it, it immediately exits with the following
 error:

   $ xscreensaver-demo
xscreensaver-demo: symbol lookup error: /usr/lib/libxml2.so.2: undefined
 symbol: $DR(

 What's wrong?

Good question, but surely this symbol never existed... What does
objdump -T /usr/bin/xscreensaver-demo has to say ?

I had updated to Debian unstable (still running 2.6.18-4 kernel

  #/etc/init.d/winbind stop
  #gdb winbindd
  [stuff...]
  (gdb) run -d 10 -i

The log is attached. If this is the wrong way about debugging it, I

I may be incorrect but I see no segfault here, just you stopping the
 program at the end (Ctrl-C?).

SIGUSR1 is a signal that is trapped by gdb by default, but whose default
signal handler in glibc doesn't result in program termination. So one needs
to either ignore the signal, or use the 'cont' command to continue past it
after it's been trapped by gdb.

Bug#430634: iceweasel: Please implement a way to switch between rendering modes

2007-06-26 Thread Andrea Bolognani
Package: iceweasel
Severity: wishlist

It would be nice to have a way to switch the rendering mode for a page
(quirks mode, standards compliance mode, and any other mode I'm not aware
of), pretty much the way it is possible to choose which stylesheet to use.

AFAIK, Iceweasel currently bases his decision on things like the MIME type
of the document and the presence/absence of the XML prolog, but a way to set
this explicitly would be really useful.

For example, every time I try to access a page hosted on Live
Spaces (http://spaces.live.com), Iceweasel reports an XML parsing error and
doesn't display the page: this is because the file is served as
application/xml+xhtml (thus triggering standard compliance mode), but is in
fact a naughty mix of HTML 4.01 and XHTML.

While I agree the problem should be fixed from Live Spaces' side, having this
feature in Iceweasel would render the page accessible right now, and would be
also a useful feature for web developers.

(BTW, Window's build of Firefox doesn't seem to give the XML parsing error)

Bug#430121: xterm: EOL characters missing from selection (affects triple-click)

That sounds ok (google suggests it's a form of 'script').

Unfortunately, ttyrec no longer works on my PowerBook (I get the
error Out of pty's). But I've tried xterm's log to file feature.
This log file (attached) looks OK, though I could reproduce the bug.
For instance, in the selection, there was no newline after the line
ending with .libs/uceil_log2.o, but it is present in the log file.

I recall the basic step to reproduce the bug:
1. Run a program that generates very long lines, such as make on MPFR
(and wait a bit to have sufficient data in the terminal).
2. Move back in the Xterm scrollback buffer.
3. Triple-click, and let the mouse button pressed (in particular on a
   slow machine).

Xterm soon gets lost in the selection. While the mouse button is still
pressed, move the mouse pointer upward and downward: one can already
see that the paragraph limits do not correspond to the real newline
characters.

Bug#430272: Maybe a false positive

sure

We know this bug is a false positive and can be closed. The question
raised is what happens when some Linux distributions start fixing that
macro-- does it affect binary compatibility of the Lua core library or
compiled Lua code? Hopefully not, but we'd have to check with the code
 or Lua authors to confirm.

sure, I will prepare a mail for the mailing list as soon as the
following point is clear to me.

Regarding your #2, a complex test of architecture and glibc version is
not necessary. It's enough to always put long double in the struct if
the compiler supports the type. Since gcc does, and the Lua linux
target uses gcc, I propose that it be enabled for that target. But I
want it to happen upstream so there is consistency between distros.

Right, but what still needs to be dig is *if* the architectures for which
libc 2.5 increases the size of long doubles do need long double alignement.

I did an exam about architectures and assembly many years ago, but IIRC
it really depends if these archs have a one shot instruction that
fetches 128 bit at once or not in combination with their bus.

If a long double fetch is compiled into two 64 bit fetches, you really
need to be aligned only on doubles.

If you are allowed to fetch 128 bit at once and the bus needs them to be
aligned, LUAI_USER_ALIGNMENT_T needs some tweaking.

So, I was hoping in a reply by the bugreporter saying if these arch need
128 bit alignement or not.

Cheers.

Ok thanks for all the debugging. All this makes me think the Xserver
does not like having some DRI things running (either AIGLX for compiz or

Yes, apparently something doesn't get re-initialized properly across
suspend/resume. It's hard to say at this point whether this is due to
the X driver, X server, DRM kernel module or even 3D driver, but it's
very unlikely due to compiz.

I'd like to get Michel's opinion on all
this, but I guess we'll end up forwarding this bug upstream soon.

Probably a good idea, I suggest starting to look at xf86-video-intel.

Is that really the only way?

Surely, that would mean that the checksum for the files would be incorrect
so running debsums would flag the files invalid. I'd have thought it'd
be easier to simply generate the files when the package was built instead

I'd be willing to help package kazehakase-webcore (and
kazehakase-gecko, along with a transitional kazehakase package that
depends upon it) if desired.

Why is this necessary? They don't conflict with each other. The idea
is to switch the rendering engines runtime, there's a preference setting
for this. So the only disadvantage of one binary package would be the
dependency on both sets of libraries.

Ah, I wasn't aware they didn't conflict. As long as there was an OR
dep, a single binary package would be fine (libxul* looks to be 20+ MB).

Two things to add to this ITP. One, Aníbal wrote that he needs to see

Bug#430637: adduser: Incorrect mode when deluser generate archives

2007-06-26 Thread Vincent Danjean
Package: adduser
Version: 3.103
Severity: important
Tags: patch

When generating a archive (BACKUP = 1) with deluser, the perl program
set the umask to 600 (decimal number, = 01130 in octal) instead of 0600
(octal number). This lead to an archive with the permissions set to
---x-wx--T

You must change the chmod 600 to chmod 0600 in /usr/sbin/deluser

I set the severity to important because this can have security issues
(but I'm not sure of that)

on how to add the correct user to the group.

You could probably just set the sgid bit on the parent directory... then
there's just the actual permissions on the socket to change (is it
 obeying umask by any chance??).

It does obey umask, and I have a patch in hand that will setgid() the
binary to the run-as user's primary GID, which obviates the need for
a setgid bit on the directory.

Yes, still the same problem, with the unstable driver (not tested with
the one in experimental but that shouldn't change much), not only with
OpenGL games but also randomly during normal usage.

A freeze during normal usage is quite unusual; is the hardware stable
with other operating systems? Or does it only happen in specific
situations, e.g. when the screensaver kicks in or powers down the
display or something like that?

While translating your Debconf template to German I noticed the
 following minor typo:
 -size is about 300-400Kb).
 +size is about 300-400kB).

 According to wikipedia:
It can be abbreviated a number of ways: K, KB, Kbyte and kB.

but the official (SI) version is kB (because unit prefixes are lower
case letters). I'd also recommend you to include a space before the
unit (but please ask an English native speaker) and to switch to kiB.

I'll go for kB (kiB is way too jargonic and even slightly pedantic
while we anyway do not talk about accurate numbers).

The space before the unit seems needed. It should theoretically be a
non-breakable space, but that would introduce non ASCII characters in
msgid, which is not well accepted by gettext.

I agree, it should be 400 kB.
I read the SI standard, and:
- k should be lower case
- a space is need between number and unit
- they refer a lot of time to kiB and similar, but I prefer kB, and
as long this is not a precise number, it is not very important to
  change unit.

Translations will be corrected as they arrive (assumign translators
know about the correct way to write units in their language).

Maintainer, please do NOT use only files that will be reported but
rather the bnch of files I will send at the end of the review process.

ok, thanks.

I'm impressed with the work you do!

Description: LIRC Support for Python
A module for Python that interacts with LIRC to give Python programs
the ability to receive commands from remote controls

Note:
- this package is needed for the Elisa Media Center,
- the long run approach might be to embed pylirc into lirc, or to
provide SWIG support in LIRC. This will be further discussed on the
LIRC mailing list.

Bug#274484: The shell script /usr/bin/bsh should work as a script interpreter.

It would be great if the shell script at /usr/bin/bsh would work when used as
 the bang-path in a
 script:

 #!/usr/bin/bsh
 print(Hello, World!);

At the moment, bash seems to try and interpret the file for an unknown reason.

Currently /usr/bin/bsh is a shell script. The kernel uses the sh (bash)
as interpreter for bsh script for security reasons. This cant be
circumvented. To make this work we need to write a native application
starting the java runtime. This is a bigger task. Perhaps we can reuse
one of the launchers from openjdk or harmony.

The init.d script doesn't stop/restart sympa's processes.

Which are the pidfile locations in the configuration files ?

I do have the same problem.

And I have in /etc/sympa/sympa.conf:
pidfile /var/spool/sympa/sympa.pid

Since this is a previous historical value of the parameter, it might be
nice to warn the user of this error... it's quite annoying because you get
a daily mail about the inability to restart Sympa (due to logrotate).

Even better would be for the init script to use the parameter specified
in the sympa.conf file. I don't see a good reason to have to indicate it
two different places. This only lead to such stupid errors.

(I can confirm that replacing /var/spool/sympa/sympa.pid by
/var/run/sympa/sympa.pid fixes this problem)

There are two alternative solutions:

* read the value from the configuration file (with sympa_wizard)

* modify the value by postinst (like other settings)

Racke

 Package: mutt-vc-query
 Version: 002-3
 Severity: normal

When the vc file contains a card with an X entry, that card is the
last card that is queried. For example, KAddressBook may add entries
of type X-messaging/icq-All and similar. All cards below this entry in
the vc file are invisible to the query. I believe X entries must be
 skipped by vCard parsers.

 Example entry: X-messaging/icq-All:4567890

Thanks for your bug report. This real problem lays actually in the libvc
library. I am hereby reassigning this bug report to libvc0.

Unfortunately, upstream development has stopped. I will see if I can fix
the problem by patching the upstream sources.

Any help is appreciated.

I'd be willing to help package kazehakase-webcore (and
kazehakase-gecko, along with a transitional kazehakase package that
 depends upon it) if desired.

Why is this necessary? They don't conflict with each other. The idea
is to switch the rendering engines runtime, there's a preference setting
for this. So the only disadvantage of one binary package would be the
dependency on both sets of libraries.

once this is fixed, don't forget to call dh_desktop from debian/rules

Bug#430633: scim-bridge-client-gtk: Breaks over the spot input style

2007-06-26 Thread Ming Hua
Package: scim-bridge-client-gtk
Version: 0.4.12-1
Severity: normal

Scim-bridge's GTK+ IM module doesn't seem to play well with the over
the spot style.

In SCIM, the over the spot style is set by unset the Embed Preedit
String into client window in FrontEnd - Global Setup in scim-setup.
With this style, one would expect the candidate string shown in a
separate window/widget, instead of inside the application window. This
works fine with XIM mode (GTK_IM_MODULE=xim), however scim-bridge seems
to ignore this setting and still displays the candidate string in the
application window (the on the spot style).

Attached are screenshots for GTK_IM_MODULE=scim-bridge (scim-bridge.png)
and GTK_IM_MODULE=xim (xim.png), in GNOME environment, using scim-pinyin
in gnome-terminal. The xim.png shows the desired over the spot style,
while scim-bridge.png shows the on the spot style despite the SCIM
setting for using over the spot style.

This is most likely an upstream issue, but I haven't tested directly
compiling the upstream source yet.

Bug#430643: adduser: [debconf_rewrite] Debconf templates and debian/control review

2007-06-26 Thread Christian Perrier
Package: adduser
Version: N/A
Severity: normal
Tags: patch

Dear Debian maintainer,

On Thursday, June 07, 2007, I notified you of the beginning of a review process
concerning debconf templates for adduser.

The debian-l10n-english contributors have now reviewed these templates,
and the proposed changes are attached to this bug report.

Please review the suggested changes are suggested, and if you have any
objections, let me know in the next 3 days.

Please try to avoid uploading adduser with these changes right now.

The second phase of this process will begin on Friday, June 29, 2007, when I
will
coordinate updates to translations of debconf templates.

The existing translators will be notified of the changes: they will
receive an updated PO file for their language.

Simultaneously, a general call for new translations will be sent to
the debian-i18n mailing list.

Both these calls for translations will request updates to be sent as
individual bug reports. That will probably trigger a lot of bug
reports against your package, but these should be easier to deal with.

The call for translation updates and new translations will run until
Wednesday, July 11, 2007. Please avoid uploading a package with fixed or changed
debconf templates and/or translation updates in the meantime. Of
course, other changes are safe.

On Thursday, July 12, 2007, I will contact you again and will send a final patch
summarizing all the updates (changes to debconf templates,
updates to debconf translations and new debconf translations).

Again, thanks for your attention and cooperation.

while looking for mbsync, it took me a while (read: googling) to
notice that mbsync is actually the same as isync. Please consider
mentioning mbsync in the package description of isync so that
apt-cache search mbsync actually finds it. Ideally also include
something like due to interface changes, isync has been renamed to
mbsync, a compatibility wrapper is provided.

Thanks,
Christoph

Bug#430650: zile: Wrong interpretation of // on commandline

2007-06-26 Thread Christoph Martin
Package: zile
Version: 2.2.24-1
Severity: normal

when using zile as editor und then calling eg. crontab -e
zile gets called via:

/usr/bin/editor /tmp//EdP.aeCkPrg

zile then tries to open //EdP.aeCkPrg which does not exist.

I know that the // feature is a feature while loading files in emacs
interactively to shortcut a path. But this should not happen on the
commandline. Emacs does work in the correct way. Since zile tries to
emultate emacs it should work the same way.

Bug#430654: xdg-mime: no method available for quering MIME type of 'xxx'

2007-06-26 Thread Daniel Leidert
Package: xdg-utils
Version: 1.0.1-2
Severity: normal

-BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE-
Hash: SHA1

When I try to use xdg-mime to check the MIME type of a file, I always
receive the following error:

xdg-mime: no method available for quering MIME type of 'xxx'

where 'xxx' is the filename of the given file:

xdg-mime query filetype xxx

Am I something missing? I have almost everything (except kdelibs-bin)
installed on my system, so I have all recommended and/or suggested
packages. And trying to set XDG_UTILS_DEBUG_LEVEL even to a level of _10_
does not add any additional output. When I try to query the default
applications registered for a MIME type, I always get nothing back from
the command, e.g.

$ xdg-mime query default text/html
$

But the return value is 0, so no error is reported.

Regards, Daniel

2007-06-26 Thread Elimar Riesebieter
On Tue, 26 Jun 2007 the mental interface of

 Package: alsa-utils

 Severity: normal

At a very last stage of alsaconf, it complains:

 Loading driver...
 Usage: /etc/init.d/alsa

I can just confirm this behaviour, but the script alsaconf is
mentioned tu use with 2.4 kernel. 2.6. , as yours, should load
snd-intel8x0 via udev. snd-intel8x0m I guess is the relevant modem
driver, which should be loaded with index -2. Please have a look at
/etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base and /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base-blacklist.

Ciao

I just marked it as found again in newer version, BTS should get it

Well I'd really like to have a solution for this. Current tagpy is
uninstallable because old boost libraries have been removed, it FTBFS

However if I upload this version to fix FTBFS, I will get version which

That sounds ok (google suggests it's a form of 'script').

Unfortunately, ttyrec no longer works on my PowerBook (I get the
error Out of pty's). But I've tried xterm's log to file feature.
This log file (attached) looks OK, though I could reproduce the bug.
For instance, in the selection, there was no newline after the line
ending with .libs/uceil_log2.o, but it is present in the log file.

I'll see if I can make that replay (it should work)

I recall the basic step to reproduce the bug:
 1. Run a program that generates very long lines, such as make on MPFR
(and wait a bit to have sufficient data in the terminal).

I'll look into that. For my quick check, I did an ls -l /usr/bin,
and clicked on the singly-wrapped lines showing symbolic links.
(I also tried it with your environment settings ;-)

Your picture shows you're using a color-make (will try that).
I did notice the clock in the prompt - makes me wonder if it is writing
out to the margin and in some way confusing the xterm. Is that a separate
program, or part of bash?

thanks

The only question is how imminent it really it, based on experiences
from previous transitions, it took always longer than expected ;-).

boost is not a light thing to turn from a compiler/python version to
another. it always passes from the NEW queue (ftp-masters are surely
starting to hate me) and a rebuild of all its reverse dependant packages.

so i try to foresee the Next Thing and prepare boost for it in
experimental. sometimes it takes weeks to pass throught the NEW queue,
sometimes (like yesterday) it takes hours.

Well I'd really like to have a solution for this. Current tagpy is

i'd say to build it with pytohn 2.5. it will installable, it will build
from source and it will ok with the next default python version.

you fix 2 RC and you get 1 RC. not the best, but something better.. :}

moreover, the only rdepend of tagpy is yours and it is an application.
so it should not be that great tragedy to make it use python 2.5 in
advance respect the whole archive for some time.

 Hi,

When I login as (regular) user and convert an ODT text file into a PDF
file format the font color gets lost and a black font color shows in
 the PDF file.
If I login as root the font color conversion works fine.

Hmm. Did you try on your user with a clean profile?
And, more importantly, as bpo is out the scope of this BTS: Does it also
fail with sids version? (Of course you need to downgrade libcairo2 to
1.4.6, but...)

Uh, if your APT prefers testing, Why do you use the backport? Use sids
version.

Bug#430403: gnome-panel: Crashes on every startup

Well, I start gdm normally but gnome-panels are just white. Then
BugBuddy starts to help me (argh) and the panels are kicked. I can send
the Bug using BugBuddy or abort it - nothing changes. The panels try to

it's kind of a circle. To report this bug I minimized BugBuddy to stop
the system restarting panels and BugBuddy again and again.

Killing the panel manually and reloading it or anything else (I tried a
few ways) did not help at all.

Maybe you can do anything with the backtrace below... i don't.

Bug#430513: output of grub-probe

2007-06-26 Thread Mathias Behrle
Package: grub-pc
Version: 1.95+20070604-1

--- Please enter the report below this line. ---
The problem seems already to exist with grub2, since the test below is made
with grub2 1.95-5 (i.e. I don't know, since which version this problem exists).
I remeber, that I had problems to get this version installed, too. I had to
boot another live-system without evms support, mount a normal volume as /,
chroot, mount /boot and then grub-install did its work (i.e. succesfully
installed stage 1). Afterwards it was no problem to set the root via kernel
commandline in grub.conf to an evms volume.

Bug#429715: Using Debian to print to a remote Debian CUPS server is dang hard

2007-06-26 Thread Kurt Pfeifle
Btw, the current default is not entirely useless:

When setting up a Samba server in combination with CUPS, Samba will
import any printer offered by the local CUPS and make them available.
Of course, they won't show on the IPP port unless you enable browsing
as above, but they will still be available via Samba by default.

How to configure Samba has *nothing* to do with *this* bug report.
AFAIK, Samba usually serves printing to Windows clients which are no
CUPS clients.

And, BTW, Samba will import any printer offered... is only true if

  (a) there exists a [printers] section in smb.conf, plus
  (b) there is load printers = yes in smb.conf, plus
  (c) Samba is linked against the CUPS libraries (or CUPS is told to
  create a printcap)

[but all 3 of these are enabled by default].

Whatever the default printing setup in a purely Debian environment is,
it *IS* damn hard to discover for a user how to use and how to change
it.

I'm not sure, if there is a dpkg-reconfigure thingie (for a user to set
it up by answering a few questions) for the cupsys, cupsys-client and
cupsys-bsd packages in Debian...

In any case, to make CUPS a little bit easier to use for Debian users,
a dpkg-reconfigure should ask the user if he wants to use his local
cupsys server for printing; and if no, which is the remote print
server to use. Based on that info the client.conf should be set up.
(If above question is answered yes, a check for installation of
cupsys should happen, and recommend or initiate installation if not
present).

Bug#430539: problem found

2007-06-26 Thread Joergen Haegg

Well, never trust your memory.

I upgraded X again to the latest version, started X
and took a copy of Xorg.log and the stdout+stderr-file I have.

Triggered the bug.

Xorg.log was exactly the same, no diff.

But diffing stdout+stderr had something interesting.
I'm *almost* certain there wasn't that much info before. :-)
Apparently, there was. I just didn't do a real diff before.

It seems to be a missing xf86OSRingBell symbol, and that was
probably what happened when I tried to TAB-expand a command.
Terminal tried to beep and X died.

Found this link about it:
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/xserver-xorg-input-evdev/+bug/103902

So I'll just wait until a new evdev comes out. :-)

Maybe ttyrec should just be removed from Debian?

For the record: I saw the same problem with 2.6.21.
The above was the correct hint to find what was wrong:
ID_FS_TYPE=LVM2_member
The dd command from 427972 will not work here, so I booted 2.6.21 and let
it drop to the emergency shell.

/dev/hda3 is my root partition, so I did

mount -t ext3 /dev/hda3 /root
cp /root/sbin/pvremove /sbin
umount /root
/sbin/pvremove /dev/hda3

2.6.21 boots just fine now.

Hmm, I had tried that before, and the bug disappeared, but I just tried
it again, and I was able to reproduce. So it seems that the problem is
_not_ the kbd module.

I did a bit more testing, and it looks like it is related to the ipw3945
kernel module...presumably it is delaying the keyboard interrupts,
causing the behavior I'm seeing. I can reliably get the bug to reproduce
after enabling 'power-saving mode' for the card.

 Possibly maybe related to https://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=10308

No, that problem is much worse than mine (mine is just a slight delay in
key actions). :)

Was it intentional to upload this version to experimental? There already
is newer version which is still using python 2.5...

say that i changed my mind after the announce of the imminent transition
to python 2.5 as default :) anyway those -2 and -3 were already in
the queue...

this bug results closed for the wrong motivation, feel free to reopen
it if you think is appropriate.

cheers
