Bug#485160: Bug#485178: netcat: FTBFS when converted to new source format 3.0 (quilt): patches modify files in debian directory
On Mon, 16 Jun 2008, Decklin Foster wrote: Raphael Hertzog writes: In the case of netcat, the quilt series contains patches that modify files in the debian directory. You shouldn't have to dynamically patch the files in the debian directory since its content is provided by the .diff.gz (or the new .debian.tar.gz in the new format). The reasoning for this was that - The manual page (nc.1) was added by Debian - a couple of the quilt patches add new options which are logically separate from those in other patches That's fine, but if you consider those as patchs to the upstream source ready to be merged, place your added manual page in the upstream hierarchy and not inside debian. This will automatically fix those two bugs. I am in the process of converting everything to git-buildpackage, so this problem will go away. For lenny, I'd like to keep the format as it is so that the patch series for -openbsd (new) can be compared to the existing one in -traditional. Immediately after that I will start uploading from git (AIUI, until we can really upload 3.0 source packages, this will result in a big ugly .diff.gz, which I would not consider fit for release in the case of such a heavily modified package as netcat). I'll close these bugs whenever that is. Even after release, it's unlikely that all 3.0 formats will be accepted on ftp-master. In particular I don't expect the git format to be ready to go. However I hope that by then we'll have examples of tools to generate 3.0 (quilt) source packages directly from a git repository. We all know launch a GR about this would be overreacting... :) Main problem with this answer is not the content, is the way you expressed it and my way of reading it (I read there PTS is mine, shut up!). I try to be open when I read it about what you mean, but you have to be more careful in the way you communicate, specially since I know you are aware of our communication problems in Debian. But not, aparently Ubuntu is the only derivative that matters. It's the only derivative which has the infrastructure required to share such information with us and it's the only one that's big enough so that the information possibly hidden in their bug tracker could be of interest to us in some cases. I asked somebody when bloging about this issue, invite another derivated distros to submit the info about how we can tracking them. This is done now. So fine on my side. So please, remove the link to the ubuntu launchpad bugs and since some people think tracking derivated distros is interesting, make a new page, that can be visited optionally (or just forget about for who is not interested), where we can track whatever derivated distro people care about. Just forget the box in the corner... it's the same as forgetting about a page (which would be linked from the PTS anyway). Call it Debian Ecosystem Packaging Tracking System or something like that. You can start with Ubuntu there and if people is interested in another distros they will submit their patches, and if another distros are interested in being tracked, they will make it to be easy tracked. The day where we have more than one interesting distro to track, I'll gladly do that. Heck! it could even track another distros, not only derivatives and being a first step for sharing patches across distributions, idea that is around without any implementation. Of course, this would be great and I'm interested in this, but it's not directly connected to the problem at hand. Please, rename the bug title back to the original one and close it again (I could do it but I did not fix it :) ). I will open a new bug with this. Bug#483971: Fwd: Re: grub-installer: no support for dmraid and multipath for grub2
On Mon, Jun 16, 2008 at 10:56:06PM +0200, Robert Millan wrote: No. The bios doesn't now anything about the multipathing. It sees a number of identical scsi devices sda[a-d] while Linux multipaths this to /dev/mapper/mpath0. ... then /dev/mapper/mpath0 doesn't belong in device.map. O.k. So the device map only lists Bios/EFI devices? If it's just an alias for an existing device, we'll probably have to think this through. /dev/mapper/mpath0 is kind of an alias for the underlying paths (e.g. /dev/sda[a-d]). So whenever grub wants to access /dev/sd? it should access the /dev/mapper/mpathX instead. Does this qualify as an alias? There are two ways to find out which /dev/sd? build up the multipath device: Looking at the multipath -l output or looking at the dm map (like I've implemented it in parted). So how is this different from software RAID-1? I think it doesn't differ that much - this is why we could reuse most of the grub-installer code for grub1. The basic poinst is that we need grub to write the MBR onto /dev/mapper/mpathX and that the partitions are /dev/mapper/mapthX-partY instead of /dev/sdaY. This is a bit of a special case but sufficient for the installer. -- Guido signature.asc Description: Digital signature
Bug#486268: Please remove outdated and confusing pre-2.6 keymaps
On Sun, Jun 15, 2008 at 07:37:35AM +0200, Christian Perrier wrote: Quoting Wouter Verhelst ([EMAIL PROTECTED]): Package: console-data Version: 2:1.07-3 Severity: wishlist Hi, console-data currently contains a number of keymaps that exist from pre-2.6 days. Before version 2.6 of the Linux kernel, a keymap had to be made on an architecture-specific way; since the key codes of a PC keyboard were not the same as that of, say, a Macintosh ADB keyboard, the keymaps had to account for this difference. In 2.6, however, the kernel accounts for this difference; now, all keycodes are translated to their PC equivalent; as such, a keymap that works on a PC will now also work on a Macintosh, or on any other architecture. Since loading a keymap that assumes architecture-specific keycodes renders a keyboard fairly unusable, and since Debian hasn't supported pre-2.6 kernels for a while now, it's probably best, in the interest of avoiding confusion, to remove these outdated keycodes. Of course I don't know about *all* possible keymaps; but I can say with certainty that the mac-* keymaps (except for the mac-usb-* ones) can all safely be removed. While I generally agree with you, I feel like I don't have the needed expertise to be sure doing this safely. I maintain console-data as much as I can, without all the needed skills to do it..:-) So, as long as I'm alone working on it, I'll be *very* conservative with it. Of course, even more as we're close to lenny release. That makes sense. After all, it's the main reason why I made this a wishlist bug, rather than a normal one... ;-) But I can guarantee you that the mac-* keymaps are currently broken. This bug was filed after I'd loaded one of them once too many on one of my m68k macs... I would very much welcome any help (or Alastair coming back to work deeper on it) to prepare a good post-lenny version, cleaned out from many many old cruft we keep in there (just check all possible variants of French and German keymaps for instance). I don't think there's anyone on this world who knows what the correct keymaps are by heart. I think you basically have two options: - Decode the keymaps, and figure out whether a key such as e (which is in the same position on almost all keymaps) has the correct key number (perhaps use http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Keyboard_layout to verify). In theory this should be possible, but it's quite some work. - Start a wiki page and have people submit comments on whether a keymap is still useful. -- Lo-lan-do Home is where you have to wash the dishes. -- #debian-devel, Freenode, 2004-09-22 -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of unsubscribe. Don't know about network/internet games, I've only ever played locally. I'll try that later. Internet games are easy :) Which DE/WM are you running? Gnome? KDE? Xfce? Is Compiz(-Fusion) active? Bug#486425: ITP: bomstrip -- strip Byte-Order Marks from UTF-8 text files
On Mon, Jun 16, 2008 at 12:28:52PM +0300, Lars Wirzenius wrote: ma, 2008-06-16 kello 12:14 +0300, Peter Pentchev kirjoitti: Hm. Okay, so maybe the two command-line utilities and the collection might be separated. IMHO, the collection *is* still useful on its own :) If others share this opinion, I may either create two separate packages, or just remove the command-line utilities and file a wishlist bug against coreutils or textutils or something like that. How does that strike you? What do others think? I wish to ask this question: is packaging this collection directly useful to Debian users? How? If the task is to remove BOMs from files, then surely that should be served by a one-line sed or perl script (plus manual page, copyright license file, etc, so a total cost of about 200 KiB). I'm not saying that the collection should not be packaged, I'm just finding it hard to imagine it being useful as a Debian package. Yes, I agree with your reasoning. Okay then, so the new plan is to package the bomstrip and bomstrip-files utilities and the manual page, and leave developers who are interested in the various implementations to take a look at the source package. As to the packaging, though, I wonder. The sed and awk implementations of bomstrip have problems with files that do not end in a newline. Thus, I would prefer to package either the Perl or the C implementation. The C implementation is a bit larger (ELF and stuff), but the Perl implementation has a run-time dependency on, well, Perl :) My personal preference would be towards the C version to avoid the unnecessary dependency, but if people feel that 5 KB is too big for such a utility, I'll package up the Perl version instead :) In another message, Bryan Donlan wrote: Would the collection really be useful in /binary/ form, however? If the goal is to show how easy it is to write, installing a bunch of functionally identical /usr/bin/bomstrip.{c,ada,cplusplus,haskell,ocaml} binaries won't demonstrate much :) Errr, that would have been true if the package only distributed the compiled versions; however, the whole point of my original ITP was to install all the implementations into /usr/share/bomstrip/source/ and only one executable as /usr/bin/bomstrip :) (and a helper tool as /usr/bin/bomstrip-files, and manpages for both) But, yep, as I wrote above, the plan now is to only package the tools and the manpages. Bug#484656: gnome, kde, xfce use non-policy main menu
Gnome, KDE, and XFCE are the the top three desktops used in debian and cover most users of desktops in debian. They all use xdg .desktop-based menus as their main menu. xdg .desktop-based menus are not covered by policy. This means some maintainers refuse to use them (see bug #478954 and #478916). The main menu should either be the debian-menu (instead of having the debian as a secondary menu, available from the desktop menu system, but as a separate submen) or all packages which are supposed to have menu entires should also be required to supply .desktop files. Having a dual-menu scheme in policy is ugly. So is having the main menu, where users, especially new users, expect to find all their programs not be canonical. Having a second canonical menu means the programs are at least available but you have to know to look there when you can't find it in the main menu, and looking in two places to find a program is a pain. You could always look in the debian menu, but then why have the main menu? -- And that's my crabbing done for the day. Hi, Brice. Hello Stephen, Does the bug still occurs with latest -core and -ati from unstable? Brice The last versions I tried on the Radeon 7000/VE were from April 13, 2008, and the black flickering band and shaking problems were still there. I still have a twin workstation using the Radeon 7000/VE, but I can't reach it this week. I'll email you when I try it out. Bug#486485: [wesnoth-data] some images are twice in the data-package
severity 486485 wishlist thanks * Matthias Krüger [EMAIL PROTECTED] [2008-06-16 13:30:44 CEST]: The images file:///usr/share/doc/wesnoth/images/schedule-secondwatch.jpg ... file:///usr/share/doc/wesnoth/images/orb-yellow.jpg ... can be found at file:///usr/share/games/wesnoth/data/core/images/misc/schedule-secondwatch.png ... and file:///usr/share/games/wesnoth/data/core/images/help/orb-yellow.png ... , too. No, not really. png != jpg. While the game rather looks for higher quality images, the manual only uses lower quality (and thus lower file size) jpg images for rendering speeding up. Is it possible to replace the images at .../share/doc/wesnoth... with links of the images from .../games/wesnoth/data/core/images... ? No, because a jpg isn't a png, and having an jpg linked to an png could cause strange rendering weirdnesses. It might require also changing the links within the manuals to use the other filetype for their img src= references, and I'm not too sure about the real benefit for doing that. Thanks for your bugreport! This bug is known already: recent kernels more aggressively flag devices as being keyboards. Yaird is very robust by design, and refuse to build a ramdisk if there is any known risk of not working. Default yaird config is to enable keyboard during bootup, to be able to type in passwords for encrypted filesystems and for debugging. With recent kernels it decides that it cannot safely resolve the modules to include to enable all possible buttons on your machine. The short-term workaround is to disable INPUT in /etc/yaird/Default.cfg. If your rootfs is encrypted you then need to add MODULE lines to explicitly load modules for your keyboard, as yaird cannot reliably (and will not unreliably) guess which keyboard (and non-keyboard buttons) you actually use. The real solution is to either disable support for encrypted rootfs by default (which I dislike) or extend resolving routines to include more knowledge about non-keyboard buttons, to safely ignore weird stuff (like generic button support on some ACPI video driver) that can't possibly be used as input for encryption and debugging. If you feel like playing with perl and sysfs, then I'd appreciate help implementing such non-keyboard resolving routines. Oh - and to get ahead of my quite enthusiastic competitor, Max: You can also just abandon yaird and instead use initramfs-tools. Just please do not engage in FUD like yaird is completely broken. it is not true. Bug#461349: 100% CPU '/usr/bin/index++' zombies
Hello, On Mon, 16 Jun 2008, Pawel Wiecek wrote: I've been hit by this bug as well and would like to add a bit of clarification: these processes are not zombies -- they are _running_: PID USER PR NI VIRT RES SHR S %CPU %MEMTIME+ COMMAND 19691 root 20 0 32456 3652 1164 R 100 0.2 56:18.35 index++ As originally reported they are 100% immune to killing, I can kill -9 the process and it's still there (same PID, so it's not restarted by anything). Once you have killed the process it is not really using anything except possibly keeping some swap space tied up. I believe wishlist priority for this bug is not justified, while playing with resource limits might workaround it, it would not solve the real bug. The reasons for tagging the bug wontfix and using the wishlist severity are as follows: 1. The upstream author does not consider this as a bug in the program. 2. The problem is with the way index++ is invoked by a cron job which in turn is installed by dwww and not by swish++. As a crude example, you could start a cron job invoking the script #!/bin/sh while true do {put any time consuming program here} sleep 1 done This may eat up some resources but you could not count it as a bug in /bin/sh. 3. The problem is that the default configuration for swish++ cannot anticipate all the different contexts in which it is run. (a) Someone running an indexing service for a library may not want to limit resources and will be happy if the job takes a week but produces a complete index. (b) On the other hand someone wanting to setup an index for e-mail may not want to wait that long. 4. The best that can be done is to: (a) Provide sample configuration files for low-resource usage. (b) For cron to apply resource limits to the jobs it starts. None of the above can solve the original bug. So that explains the wontfix tag. Since the bug is a request for a new feature (alternate config files) while the original package remains completely usablee it is severity wishlist. Bug#464574: 464574: Can the problem be nameserver 127.0.0.1?
Hello. I am using virtualbox on debian amd64 with windows guest. Host has pdnsd installed and resolv.conf contains a single line with 127.0.0.1. I have the same problem as Nelson. Wireshark shows that virtualbox sends dns requests to 127.0.1.1 instead of 127.0.0.1. But pdnsd listens to 127.0.0.1 only. Workaround is to change /etc/hosts hostname line from 127.0.0.1 to 127.0.1.1. And it starts working. I think there are several questions/problems (not all related to virtualbox): 1. Why virtualbox uses hostname for dns server when nameserver is set to 127.0.0.1 in /etc/resolv.conf? 2. Why debian has hostname mapped to 127.0.1.1 in /etc/hosts if there are services which listen to 127.0.0.1 only (and break)? Sorry if I have misunderstood something and above does not make sense. Bug#486619: hg email: wish for access to arbitrary header fields (e.g. In-Reply-To)
Package: mercurial Version: 1.0.1-1 Severity: wishlist Tags: upstream Currently, hg email provides switches to set the most important header fields: BCC, CC, Date, From, Subject and To. Just now, I wished to hg email a changeset bundle in reply to a BTS email, and to make sure it was threaded properly, I wished to manually set the In-Reply-To header field so that it contained the Message-ID of the original message. That is, something like hg email -r tip --in-reply-to '[EMAIL PROTECTED]' It occurred to me that this might as well be genericized, so that *arbitrary* header fields can be added / overridden. That is, hg email -r tip --header-field 'In-Reply-To: [EMAIL PROTECTED]' This prospective switch (--header-field) could be used multiple times, e.g. hg email --header-field 'Foo: Bar' --header-field 'Baz: Quux' Presumably the existing --cc and friends could then be simple wrappers for this feature. PS: not CCing directly into upstream roundup because I can't find out what its email address is (assuming mercurial's roundup instance has email enabled). -- System Information: Debian Release: lenny/sid APT prefers testing APT policy: (990, 'testing'), (500, 'unstable'), (1, 'experimental') Architecture: i386 (i686) Kernel: Linux 2.6.25-2-686 (SMP w/1 CPU core) Locale: LANG=en_AU.utf8, LC_CTYPE=en_AU.utf8 (charmap=UTF-8) Shell: /bin/sh linked to /bin/dash Versions of packages mercurial depends on: ii libc6 2.7-10 GNU C Library: Shared libraries ii mercurial-common 1.0.1-1Scalable distributed version contr ii python2.5.2-1An interactive high-level object-o ii python-support0.8.1 automated rebuilding support for P ii ucf 3.007 Update Configuration File: preserv Versions of packages mercurial recommends: pn rcs | kdiff3 | tkdiff | meld none (no description available) -- no debconf information -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of unsubscribe. Bug#486482: tex4ht: a java program invoked from oolatex goes in error
Hello, On Mon, 16 Jun 2008, Giacomo Boffi wrote: please note that i put Eitan Gurari in Cc As far as I know, Eitan reads the Debian bugs listings for tex4ht. shouldn't this problem be reflected into the dependencies of tex4ht? let's say that tex4ht reccomends sun's java Currently, tex4ht Suggests Sun's java rather than Recommends. This is for a combination of reasons: 1. Many users (myself included!) so far do not need to use xtpipes. 2. Sun's java is currently not available in Debian. It is only available in the non-free archive. This may change as a Debian version of Sun's java may become available. 3. We want to reduce the packages automatically installed. So we do not even use Recommend for imagemagick or ghostscript. Note that Recommended packages are (from now on) automatically installed for most Debian users by default --- disabling this requires the user to choose do not install recommend by default. Thus packages that are not needed by most users should be in Suggests. Regards, Kapil. -- signature.asc Description: Digital signature

Hi, this bug is fixed in version 0.7.11 of apt (rev. 1585..1586 in the debian-sid branch). If this is a problem for etch-lenny upgrades, this change needs to be either backported to etch or a workaround needs to be applied. Bug#485513: RFS: smbind (2nd attempt)
-BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE- Hash: SHA1 Dear mentors, I am looking for a sponsor for my package smbind. * Package name: smbind Version : 0.4.7-1 Upstream Author : Ole Myhre [EMAIL PROTECTED] * URL : http://sourceforge.net/projects/smbind/ * License : GPL Section : web Smbind is a PHP-based tool for managing DNS zones for BIND via the web. Supports per-user administration of zones, error checking, and a PEAR DB database backend. This tool will enable you to administer your bind-based DNS server without having to touch your zone files with a text editor, while also providing a redundant backup of the data stored in both a PEAR DB database and in the normal text configuration files. Since it is web-accessible, those without shell access or command-line skills (or whom are just plain lazy) can enjoy DNS administration from the comfort of a remote browser. Here some screenshots: http://sourceforge.net/dbimage.php?id=27962 http://sourceforge.net/dbimage.php?id=27960 http://sourceforge.net/dbimage.php?id=27958 And here you can find an online demo: http://smbind.sourceforge.net/src/main.php It builds these binary packages: smbind - PHP-based tool for managing DNS zones for BIND The package appears to be lintian clean. Bug#464559: fixed in 0.7.11
Hi Michael, thanks for the information. On Tuesday 17 June 2008 12:36, Michael Vogt wrote: this bug is fixed in version 0.7.11 of apt (rev. 1585..1586 in the debian-sid branch). If this is a problem for etch-lenny upgrades, this change needs to be either backported to etch or a workaround needs to be applied. There is some information in http://launchpad.net/bugs/217435 what can be done to work around the problem. The only workaround I saw there was to change+relax the dependencies of packages which trigger the bug in apt, I dont think this is a good fix/workaround. (Because we might miss some packages.) But then, a mandatory apt upgrade before upgrading to lenny is also optimal, even though this has been done before. regards, Holger pgpKnAPDsn6Es.pgp Description: PGP signature

Bug#486627: tor is not stopped on uninstall
Package: tor Severity: important I did aptitude remove tor but examinig the machine with nmap later still showed tor running. Tor was listed in state deinstall ok installed in dpkg status and aptitude showed it in state Bd (that is broken, selected for deinstall) as its dependencies are already removed. I suspect this is because the tor script fails to stop tor reliably. I retried and watched the output. This time tor was uninstalled properly with a long delay while the service was stopping. I think that failure to stop a service on uninstall is a problem if the service is removed for security or policy reasons. When triggering play DVD from gnome-mount-applet, it starts totem dvd://, which won't play the disk. If I try with totem dvd:///media/DVDVIDEO/, it works. Of course I could ask gnome-mount applet to change the invocation syntax, but I guess the problem lies in totem indeed. I guess I was confused, and looking at the code of totem, it seems now to be expecting some URI in the form dvd:///path/to/dvd/mount/point I guess I'll file a bug against gnoem-applet instead. Well in the end, it seems it's not necessary to do so, as I just need to change the DVD autoplay setting in gnome-volume-properties. Thanks for the feedback. Just pass the mounted path, it will work as expected and won't require any special handling in the gnome-applet. This will also work with Sound-juicer and Rhythmbox. For example: totem file:media/DVDVIDEO I changed it to invoke totem dvd://%m (where %m stands for the mount point). And now, it works as expected. Sorry for bothering in this ticket, which was loosely related. Bug#486630: trn: fails to trim References: lines correctly.
Package: trn Version: 3.6-16 Severity: normal Tags: patch When presented with an overlong References: line trn copies it into a fixed length buffer which often causes a reference to become truncated. e.g: Message-ID: [EMAIL PROTECTED] References: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [EMAIL PROTECTED] [EMAIL PROTECTED] [EMAIL PROTECTED] [EMAIL PROTECTED] [EMAIL PROTECTED] [EMAIL PROTECTED] [EMAIL PROTECTED] [EMAIL PROTECTED] [EMAIL PROTECTED] [EMAIL PROTECTED] [EMAIL PROTECTED] [EMAIL PROTECTED] [EMAIL PROTECTED] [EMAIL PROTECTED] [EMAIL PROTECTED] becomes: References: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [EMAIL PROTECTED] x [EMAIL PROTECTED] on reply. Bug#483971: Fwd: Re: grub-installer: no support for dmraid and multipath for grub2
On Tue, Jun 17, 2008 at 09:16:51AM +0200, Guido Günther wrote: On Mon, Jun 16, 2008 at 10:56:06PM +0200, Robert Millan wrote: No. It lists BIOS devices. For the other platforms, it also has support for Ieee1275 devices, but in general they're just dummy placeholders. A proper fix belongs in GRUB, not grub-installer. Please don't add hacks there to workaround GRUB limitations. I think I have enough info to sort this out now; I'll give this a try, maybe tomorrow, and come back with a patch for you to test.
