This gthumb problem was reported well ahead of the Lenny freeze. I've run into a few bugs lately where a very simple fix would render a package safer (as in this case, where I removed the save option on the crop window in the gthumb source) or make it work where it previously failed (gnu-fdisk segfaulting, eata kernel module in kernels 2.6.23-2.6.27 not working). Does the Lenny freeze mean that even these kind of fixes when applied by the Debian package maintainer will not be able to be applied to the packages to ship with Lenny? Bug#509292: rsyslog: random crashes with remote logging
On Sat, Jan 3, 2009 at 10:22 PM, Michael Biebl bi...@debian.org wrote: I can reproduce this segfault when I use the $AllowedSender directive in rsyslog.conf and reload rsyslogd. rsyslog is reloaded daily via the cron job, which might explain your regular crashes. Could you please verify, that you no longer get the crashes, if you remove the $AllowedSender directive, so I can be sure that we are on the same track. Hello Michael, yes I can confirm that you are on the same track. I removed this directive because of the problem I mentioned earlier and now my server has been up since that. However the original reason for this bug report was that my remote logging client crashed randomly. Sometimes during normal operation and not during reload and of course my client does not have the AllowedSender directive. But for some reason my client has been running fine since I recompiled rsyslog with more debugging output (--enable-rtinst). Bug#510667: broken conffile handling
Package: ssbd Version: 0.10-9 Severity: serious The handling of /etc/default/ssbd is broken. First, it's a dpkg conffile (installed by dh_installinit) but also modified by the maintainer scripts. This is explicitly forbidden, see policy 10.7.3 (and the Lenny RC policy). In fact, dpkg will currently even prompt about a modified conffile on the initial install from a clean state. Second, the debconf settings must not be used as a registry. If I modify the port number in /etc/default/ssbd, an upgrade or reinstall may not override the manual setting like it currently does. This is usually done by parsing an existing configuration file and setting the debconf values by that. See debconf-devel(7), 'Config file handling'. Third, although not as serious: the config script is not supposed to actually generate the configuration file, just examine the state of the system and ask the questions. Again, see debconf-devel(7). It seems to me that debconf is overkill for such a simple and self-explanatory setting that has a sensible default. Why not just ship a dpkg conffile and leave it at that? -- Niko Tyni nt...@debian.org -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to debian-bugs-dist-requ...@lists.debian.org with a subject of unsubscribe. Trouble? Bug#456128: Imlib2 patch for MagicPoint
Hello Peter, Thanks for your patch. I will check the patch and merge it. Thanks, -- Yoshifumi Nishida nish...@sfc.wide.ad.jp From: Peter De Wachter pdewa...@gmail.com Subject: Imlib2 patch for MagicPoint Date: Wed, 31 Dec 2008 18:08:59 +0100 Message-ID: 20081231180859.309ce...@tleilaxu This patch adapts MagicPoint to work with the imlib2 library. (MagicPoint currently uses the older imlib.) As far as I can tell this patch works fine, though I'm not a MagicPoint user myself so I might have missed something. (This is based on Barry deFreese's earlier work, in case you've seen that.) The reason for this patch is that Debian is trying to remove imlib. It has long been unmaintained, and very few programs still use it. MagicPoint is one of the last. I hope this reaches the mgp-users list. I tried subscribing using the instructions on the website, but didn't get a subscription confirmation email. Bug#510676: /etc/default/hdparm is not read on resume from suspend to ram
Package: hdparm Version: 8.9-2 Severity: important When resuming a laptop from suspend to ram (and probably disk too, but I haven't tested) the /etc/default/hdparm file is not read and the commands not executed. That means after a suspend/resume cycle the disks is configured differently than after a normal boot. I think the only issue with network interfaces and disks is that you must make sure to only try to process them, after the rest of the userspace setup crap is done (such as renaming of network interfaces by udev, addition of /dev nodes based on UUID and so on for disks, etc). We clearly will need help from maintainers of the other subsystems on this, particularly from the udev maintainer to help us get all locking and timing correct. Bug#490241: Help needed
Mark Hymers m...@debian.org (03/01/2009): I've just tried to reproduce this on lenny on an hppa and the package builds perfectly fine. I've attached a build log for reference. Looking at the (failed) build log, it looks like $HOME could be set to a non-existing directory, which makes the creation of ~/.qt (probably done through an equivalent of “mkdir ~/.qt”, without “-p”) fail: | QSettings: error creating /nonexistent/.qt | QSettings: error creating /nonexistent/.qt | QSettings: error creating /nonexistent/.qt | QSettings::sync: filename is null/empty There are some patches for this kind of situation in Gnome/Gtk-related packages. I'll try and reproduce that bug with a local sbuild. I'm not sure about the other errors. Mraw, KiBi. signature.asc Description: Digital signature
Bug#457896: [Pkg-sysvinit-devel] Bug#457896: (fwd) Re: Using startpar in makefile mode and failing getpt()
On Thursday 01 January 2009 21:33:34 Petter Reinholdtsen wrote: Here is a patch I wrote a year ago to work around the getpt() problem. It uses a copy of the glibc getpt() function until /dev/pts is mounted, this working around the fact that the glibc getpt() only probe once if /dev/pts exist. Did you receive feedback about it? I notice it has not been applied to startpar version 0.52. - Forwarded message from Petter Reinholdtsen p...@hungry.com - Date: Thu, 28 Feb 2008 12:21:16 +0100 From: Petter Reinholdtsen p...@hungry.com To: Stephan Kulow Cc: Dr. Werner Fink Subject: Re: Using startpar in makefile mode and failing getpt() [Stephan Kulow] /etc/init.d/boot is the script executed by inittab and this one will mount important file systems before calling startpar. boot.localfs will remount them later. Aha. That explains it. I try to work around it by replacing getpt(). The version in glibc will only check once if the required files and partitions are present, and refuse to check again when the environment change while the process is running. My replacement do not have that problem. I've had to patch startpar a bit to get it working on Debian, and here is the complete patch, relative to version 0.50. - I had to change the path used to find the rc*.d/ directories. - I added debug modus to get more output while figuring out what is wrong - I added the getpt() hack. Currently protected using an #ifdef to be able to test without it. Do you think it is important to protect this hack with #ifdef's ? When I test startpar in makefile mode with debugging enabled and the getpt() hack disabled, it try to run the same scripts several times. When processing rc2.d/ (skipped rcS.d/ because of the getpt() problem), it try to run rc.local three times, and both stop-bootlogd and sysklogd twice. Any idea why this happen? Is the same problem present on SuSe when printing debug output? I have separate patches to make startpar (seemingly, for me) work nicely with Debian rc.d design. It does not suffer from duplicate execution of scripts as far as I can tell. Below is patch based on yours for startpar 0.52. Bug#510723: ITP: libconfig-model-itself-perl -- Graphical *model* editor for Config::Model
Package: wnpp Severity: wishlist Owner: Dominique Dumont domi.dum...@free.fr * Package name: libconfig-model-itself-perl Version : 1.208-1 Upstream Author : Dominique Dumont ddum...@cpan.org * URL : http://search.cpan.org/dist/Config-Model-Itself/ * License : LGPL Programming Lang: Perl Description : Graphical *model* editor for Config::Model This module provides a graphical editor to edit configuration model for Config:Model. (emphasis on model) This modules also provides a model for Config::Model (hence the Itself name, you can also think of it as a meta-model). The editor will use this meta-model to construct the graphical interface so you can edit the configuration model for *your* application. [ This module is the eat your own dog food principle applied to Config::Model ;-) ] Let's step back a little to explain. Any configuration data is, in essence, structured data. This data could be stored in an XML file. A configuration model is a way to describe the structure and relation of all items of a configuration data set. This configuration model is also expressed as structured data. This structure data is structured and follow a set of rules which are described for humans in Config::Model. The structure and rules documented in Config::Model are also expressed in a model in the files provided with Config::Model::Itself. Hence the possibity to verify, modify configuration data provided by Config::Model can also be applied on configuration models. Using the same user interface. The model editor program is config-model-edit. Since the model editor and the configuration data editor are based on the same graphical module, you will use similar UIs to edit configuration data (for instance Xorg configuration data from xorg.conf) and Xorg model (if you need to add new parameters in Xorg model) Once this module is installed, you can run: # config-model-edit -model model_name For instance, if you have installed Config::Model::Xorg, you can run # config-model-edit -model Xorg If you save Xorg configuration model, it will create a lib directory and write the modified model there. -- System Information: Debian Release: 5.0 APT prefers unstable APT policy: (990, 'unstable'), (500, 'testing'), (1, 'experimental') Architecture: amd64 (x86_64) -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to debian-bugs-dist-requ...@lists.debian.org with a subject of unsubscribe. Bug#446323: mdadm: recovery in infinite loop
fOn Wed, Oct 17, 2007 at 04:16:39PM -0500, Lukasz Szybalski wrote: On 10/15/07, Neil Brown ne...@suse.de wrote: As you say, the devices are exactly the same size, thanks. On Monday October 15, szybal...@gmail.com wrote: how do I undo? mdadm /dev/md2 -f /dev/hda2 So I could try the sync in init 1 Lucas Well, you could: mdadm /dev/md2 -f /dev/hda2 mdadm /dev/md2 -r /dev/hda2 then when you are ready to try again mdadm /dev/md2 -a /dev/hda2 Ok, So I went into init 1 to get rid of any program that might want to access the hda2. I unmounted my '/files' which mounts my hda2 in '/' folder. I was watching it as it went for 30 min to sync the drives and suddenly I got unrecognizable error 5 i believe it was. Unable to read sector lba 88604764 on hdb1. I guess that showed up in stderr or something because I couldn't find reference to it anywhere other then a terminal screen. What would be the proper command for testing every single block on that hardrive using e2fsck I used e2fsck -acf /dev/hdb2 but that took all night and it still wasn't finished. I've canceled it. What would be the proper options for this command that would get me to clean this drive. The weird part is when I checked the drives last Thursday using knoppix nothing has shown any problems or bad sectors. I think there must be something odd happening with the drive or controller. I notice that the two devices are on the same IDE channel, which is sometimes a source of problems, though it should behave like this. If you feel up to patching the kernel, recompiling, and experimenting, I can send you a patch which should provide more detailed information on what is happening. Let me know what kernel version you will be working with. Never done recompiling of a kernel before, but I guess if everything fails then we can try it. For now let me clean this drive and we go from there. What's the status of this bug? Does this error still occur with more recent kernel versions? If you're running Etch, you could try to reproduce this bug with the 2.6.24 based kernel added in 4.0r4: http://packages.qa.debian.org/l/linux-2.6.24.html Cheers, Moritz -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to debian-bugs-dist-requ...@lists.debian.org with a subject of unsubscribe. Bug#510724: libglib2.0-0: Function 'g_main_context_check' crashes if no input available
Package: libglib2.0-0 Version: 2.16.6-1 Severity: normal Tags: patch Hi The function 'g_main_context_check' polls input sources for events. The code contains a race condition such that the function generates a segfault if one of the sources does not have any events. A stack trace is attached. The bug is that the while-expression counts the number of processed array elements. This number is only increased if an element has an event. A simple patch to increment on each iteration is attached. The bug is triggered like this: The function walks over an array of GPollFDs and an internal linked list. The array elements are tested for events. If one of the elements does not have any events, the array and the list get out of sync. The bug is that the iterating while-expression depends on the number of processed array elements. This number is only increased if an element has an event. A simple patch to increment on each iteration is attached. The bug can lead to dereferencing a NULL-pointer while walking over the list's last element. In some situations the function might succeed but return invalid states in the 'revents' field of some array elements. I found this bug by starting Evolution and immediately clicking the button for fetching emails. This crashed Evolution but I can't reproduce it predictably. What you want is either: allow send_interface=org.freedesktop.NetworkManagerInfo send_destination=org.freedesktop.NetworkManagerInfo/ or simply: allow send_destination=org.freedesktop.NetworkManagerInfo/ In practice the latter is likely to be more appropriate - if you add more interfaces to the NMI service later, you'll probably want them to have the same access control as the base NMI interface. Bug#510736: virtualbox-ose: needs to depend versioned on kbuild
Package: virtualbox-ose Version: 2.1.0-dfsg-1 Severity: serious Justification: Policy 4.2 Backporting the current experimental virtualbox-ose package to Lenny fails with a complaint that kbuild needs to be updated. While it is not required for packages to support backports, it _is_ required that the build-dependencies declared are correct and complete. I did not investigate exactly which version of kbuild satisfies this newer version of virtualbox-ose. The simple approach is to just build- depend on at least the version currently in Sid. A much better approach, however, is to figure out the exact upstream minimal required version, and then declare at least that version - with ~ added at the end to allow also backports of that exact version. Bug#510692: nautilus: Not clear for user how to define a preferred application for media
Package: nautilus Version: 2.24.2-1 Severity: wishlist Hi, I think it is not clear for users how a registered application can be set as preferred in the media preferences. For example, for photo management, I have both f-spot and gthumb registered, but I prefer opening the folder when a media is inserted. I hence want the nautilus window to propose opening the pictures stored on the media with f-spot. To choose f-spot, I have to set open with f-spot in the media preferences tab, validate, and switch this option back to open a folder. I couldn't find any explanation on this behaviour in the help file and think it can confuse users. Bug#498189: xfonts-scalable: unnecesary use of fmt breaks when not on a tty
Package: xfonts-scalable Version: 1:1.0.0-6 Followup-For: Bug #498189 The postinst for this seems to contain a _load_ of code that seems to duplicate various bits of functionallity that are part of the packaging system. If they're needed (which I doubt) they point to bugs in dpkg. Part of this seems to be the assumption that you need to wrap messages for the user. The error being thrown by fmt would seem to be due to the fact that it's being run behind a debconf backend (noninteractive in my vase) that doesn't define a terminal width. I'd suggest that this postinst (and the others that contain all the same baggage) need a code review, and that the same result could be better achieved by use of a few debconf calls, with the added bonus that the warning messages could then be templates and so would get translated. -- System Information: Debian Release: 5.0 APT prefers testing APT policy: (501, 'testing'), (50, 'unstable') Architecture: i386 (i686) Kernel: Linux 2.6.26-1-686 (SMP w/1 CPU core) Locale: LANG=en_GB.UTF-8, LC_CTYPE=en_GB.UTF-8 (charmap=UTF-8) Shell: /bin/sh linked to /bin/dash Versions of packages xfonts-scalable depends on: ii xfonts-utils 1:7.4+1X Window System font utility progr xfonts-scalable recommends no packages. Bug#440185: xserver-xorg: Problem with black screen after installing Nvidia 3D driver
Package: xserver-xorg Version: 1:7.3+18 Followup-For: Bug #440185 Hello, I had this problem in Etch, and continue to have a similar problemn in Lenny. I installed the nvidia drivers using the method described in the Debian wiki (wiki.debian.org/NvidiaGraphicsDrivers) using the module assistant method described. After following the procedure and restarting X, I get a black screen (like an out of range monitor frequency. No curser, nothing evident on the screen, but still receiving some kind of signal, since the monitor doesn't report no signal). In the past I would solve this by doing dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg and then restarting the system. Now I do something similar, with Xorg -configure. This mostly solves the problem, although at least one 3D game (ppracer) starts with a similar black screen, while most others work OK. My hardware is a foxconn Nvidia 7600GT PCIx card on a MSI K8NGM2-FID motherboard with integrated Geforce 6150 graphics disabled. The monitor is an Acer AL2051W, connected by DVI. Keyboard and mouse are generic USB types. Not to complain, but more to point out a finding, this doesn't happen in other recent Linux distros (Ubuntu 8.1, Fedora 10, OpenSuse 11, PCLOS, etc.), so i suspect it is something in the way Xorg is implemented in Debian. Bug#510712: initscripts: inconsistent management of /etc/nologin file|symlink
Package: initscripts Version: 2.86.ds1-38+etchnhalf.1 Severity: normal Note: assigning this report to initscripts, but it's about the source package. Hope it's ok, otherwise feel free to clone this bug against the sysvinit binary package. For a long explanation, please see Joey Hess' mail in #510582[1]. In short: - initscripts treats /etc/nologin as a symlink to /var/lib/initscripts/nologin. The link is created by postinst (if not existent - doesn't touch it if it's a regular file). The init scripts only modify /var/lib/initscripts/nologin during boot/shutdown. - shutdown(8) treats /etc/nologin as a regular file and unlink() it if cancelled or before executing init. As a result, after the first reboot /etc/nologin doesn't exist anymore (either as a file or as a symlink) and the nologin feature during boot is gone. The nologin feature on shutdown works because of shutdown(8), but only in the last 5 min before init invocation. Digging in changelogs and old bug reports, and googling around a bit, I couldn't understand the rationale beyond /etc/nologin being a symlink and the real file being out of the root fs (as noted in a changelog entry), so in the following I'm guessing a lot. Please clarify on this matter, thank you. Some suggestions I can think of: 1. For the nologin feature to work also during the init phase of halt/reboot, shutdown(8) should only unlink it if cancelled (and *not* before invoking init). The nologin file should be removed by a late script during shutdown or an early script during boot if DELAYLOGIN=no (this way you can also address the fastdown case, when nologin isn't unlinked). 2. shutdown(8) could use /var/lib/initscripts/nologin or follow /etc/nologin if it's a symlink when unlinking (please note that it follows it - if still exists - when fopen-ing for writing). However, /var/lib/initscripts/nologin could be on a separate fs (possibly not mounted). I assume shutdown(8) should only operate on root fs. 3. As 2. above, but put the real file on root filesystem (reintroducing /etc/nologin.boot?). 4. Consistently treat /etc/nologin as a regular file. 5. If, for some reason, initscripts and shutdown(8) should treat /etc/nologin differently, put an early script that recreate the symlink. Thanks, Gian Piero. Note: colisions means a filesystem will NOT be checked, thus the hybrid ID (filesystem + device), to be on the very safe side. Not sure why this has been automatically marked as closed - the changelog mentions nothing. I had the same issue when I upgraded my PC from 2GB to 4GB. I followed the workaround and that worked fine. I think this is worthy of a package with tweaked memtest ELF file and preferably also a grub entry. I fear that more and more people will be hitting this problem as they upgrade old boxes to 4GB (pretty sure that's the cause for me). [Kel Modderman] Did you receive feedback about it? I notice it has not been applied to startpar version 0.52. Nope. Just the general comment that in SuSe, startpar was invoked after /dev/pts was mounted, and they thus did not have this problem. They do not use parts for rc.boot (which debian strangely calls rcS), and thus do not need to run startpar that early. :) Do you think it is important to protect this hack with #ifdef's ? Not really. For example: passwd: compat group: compat shadow: compat The chance to work with ldap authentication is just inserting ldap entry after the whole system loaded. -- System Information: Debian Release: 5.0 APT prefers testing APT policy: (500, 'testing'), (10, 'unstable') Architecture: amd64 (x86_64) Kernel: Linux 2.6.28-ares-em64t (SMP w/2 CPU cores; PREEMPT) Locale: LANG=en_GB.UTF-8, LC_CTYPE=en_GB.UTF-8 (charmap=UTF-8) Shell: /bin/sh linked to /bin/bash Versions of packages libnss-ldap depends on: ii debconf [debconf-2.0] 1.5.24 Debian configuration management sy ii libc6 2.7-16 GNU C Library: Shared libraries ii libcomerr21.41.3-1 common error description library ii libkrb53 1.6.dfsg.4~beta1-4 MIT Kerberos runtime libraries ii libldap-2.4-2 2.4.11-1 OpenLDAP libraries ii libsasl2-22.1.22.dfsg1-23Cyrus SASL - authentication abstra Versions of packages libnss-ldap recommends: ii libpam-ldap 184-4.2Pluggable Authentication Module fo ii nscd 2.7-16 GNU C Library: Name Service Cache libnss-ldap suggests no packages. -- debconf information: libnss-ldap/bindpw: (password omitted) * libnss-ldap/rootbindpw: (password omitted) libnss-ldap/dblogin: false libnss-ldap/override: true * shared/ldapns/base-dn: dc=skpcc,dc=org * shared/ldapns/ldap-server: ldaps://hera.skpcc.org:636/ libnss-ldap/confperm: false * libnss-ldap/rootbinddn: cn=admin,dc=skpcc,dc=org * shared/ldapns/ldap_version: 3 libnss-ldap/binddn: cn=proxyuser,dc=example,dc=net * libnss-ldap/nsswitch: libnss-ldap/dbrootlogin: true -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to debian-bugs-dist-requ...@lists.debian.org with a subject of unsubscribe.
